Bills sign former Panther first-round pick who played for Sean McDermott

Carolina Panthers v Buffalo Bills

The former first-round pick of the Carolina Panthers is coming of an Achilles injury.

The Buffalo Bills have signed another former Carolina Panthers defender who played for head coach Sean McDermott when he was the defensive coordinator in Charlotte. This one is a former first-round pick, to boot, as the Bills have signed linebacker Shaq Thompson.

Thompson recently turned 31 and as with a lot of players as they age, he’s recently dealt with a ton of injuries. In 2024, he played in four games before suffering a torn Achilles. In 2023, he broke his fibula in the second week of the season and missed the rest of the year. He did play 14 or more games in every previous NFL season.

The move comes as the Bills open mandatory minicamp on Tuesday and puts the team at the maximum of 91 players on the active roster.

Thompson was a first-round pick in 2015 and spent his entire career with the Panthers, first under Ron Rivera (with McDermott as DC), then Matt Rhule, Frank Reich, and Dave Canales. He was a rookie the year the team lost the Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos.

His list of accomplishments is very long. He is one of eight NFL players with four straight 100+ tackle seasons in his career.

Which Buffalo Bills players could the Shaq Thompson signing impact?

The move could be a direct replacement option for LB Baylon Spector, who has struggled in the lineup in his limited action. The Bills didn’t add a linebacker this offseason, which I thought was odd, but this seems to address that depth piece.

With Matt Milano aging and fighting off injuries, the Bills only had Dorian Williams as solid depth last year. So when Terrel Bernard was also sidelined, it caught up to the Bills quickly.

Especially as the Bills may be looking to add beef more often with three linebackers instead of playing a base nickel, adding a linebacker who can give impactful snaps is desireably.

More to come...

Bills Mafia remain clear about Buffalo’s receiving and D-line concerns

AFC Championship Game: Buffalo Bills v Kansas City Chiefs

WR or TE? DT or DE/EDGE? Which positions remain the biggest question marks on offense and defense weeks before training camp begins?

We asked, and you answered, Rumblers! Last week in a continued partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook, we wanted to know what you believe to be the Buffalo Bills’ biggest question marks regarding the passing game and along the defensive line. Though there may be other positions of concern, these buckets represent a huge chunk of the pie still missing from the oven.

Did the Bills boast an incredible league-leading scoring offense in 2024? Absolutely (hello, Josh Allen, James Cook, and Tyler Bass). But did the passing game look like a work in progress too often at times? That may trend believable given the way general manager Brandon Beane chose to once again overhaul the receiving game during the 2025 offseason.

To say there have been growing pains since losing Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis might be an understatement. Yet why, when it seemed clear to everyone that 12 personnel (2TE sets) was going to be all the rage with offensive coordinator Joe Brady? Obviously, Bills Mafia knows how things went with the tight end room last season, and it should have most fans confused about the coming campaign. The same is likely true of the wide receivers outside of Khalil Shakir.

But which position among the two is Buffalo’s biggest question mark heading into training camp in late July? Based on Reacts votes, wide receiver is the biggest unknown, with 71% of voters voting that way, while just 29% see it tight end as the biggest question mark on offense. It’s true that the depth chart remains largely unchanged at tight end, but does the position truly feel settled? Are you ready to put all your chips in on the outcome of this survey?

What about the defensive line? What did voters see as the Bills’ biggest question mark between defensive end / edge rusher and defensive tackle? Is it a surprise the majority of voters (62%) said defensive tackle is the biggest unknown heading into the season? Just 38% of votes went to the edge of the defensive line.

What is true is that all parties along Buffalo’s d-line need to prove capable of showing up during the biggest moments of a game, the highest-stakes points of a season. Until that happens, it’s likely the Bills continue exiting the playoffs earlier than most believe is befitting of a team led by Josh Allen.

Bills rookie CB Maxwell Hairston injured during mandatory minicamp on Wednesday

NFL: Buffalo Bills Minicamp

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

No, the sky isn’t falling — but injuries are popping up at One Bills Drive.

Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston was reportedly injured late during Wednesday’s mandatory minicamp session, per Alex Brasky. Hairston had to leave the field after suffering a lower body injury during team drills.

Brasky reported that Hairston was seen being worked on by athletic trainers, and “appeared to be testing the function and strength of his left knee area.” In the video below shared by Brasky, you can see Hairston talking with trainers and pointing to his lower leg.

Based on the area they’re motioning to, could be popliteal muscle issue or medial calf strain.

Potential for distal hamstring as well.

Don’t see concern for Achilles & walking pattern supports that coming off. https://t.co/wrlYsRRc08

— Banged Up Bills (@BangedUpBills) June 11, 2025

As noted by Dr. Kyle Trimble of Banged Up Bills fame (and Buffalo Rumblings alumnus) in response to Brasky’s tweet:

“Based on the area they’re motioning to, could be popliteal muscle issue or medial calf strain. Potential for distal hamstring as well. Don’t see concern for Achilles & walking pattern supports that coming off.”

While this news is less than ideal, it is early in the process — summer hasn’t even officially started yet and the depth chart isn’t set for many positions. We’re still so early in the process that our photo databases don’t even have photos of Hairston in Bills gear or on the field.

However, we saw what missing time early and often meant for safety Cole Bishop as his rookie season was just underway. Hopefully this is a minor setback for Hairston and he doesn’t have to miss much time moving forward.

Bills UDFA DE Paris Shand brings massive potential, faces steep climb to final roster

LSU Pro Day

Long and strong, Shand looks like a player the Bills would have rostered along the edge early in head coach Sean McDermott’s tenure

The Buffalo Bills have shifted the style of defensive end they deploy throughout head coach Sean McDermott’s tenure. Whereas they used to feature long, edge-setting types who could contain the quarterback, they now have begun to prioritize lighter, bendier players who have the agility and the pass-rush acumen to make plays on their own.

It’s a shift in philosophy that, frankly, is borne out of necessity, as the Bills have remained unable to generate consistent pressure on the best teams in the league with just their defensive front four. Each offseason, the Bills invest heavily in their defensive front in hopes that this is the group to stop the NFL’s high-powered passing offenses and elite quarterbacks.

In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days,” we discuss an undrafted rookie along the defensive line who profiles more along the lines of a 2017-2019 Bills’ edge prototype.

Name: Paris Shand

Number: 59

Position: DE

Height/Weight: 6’4”, 268 pounds

Age: 24 (25 on 5/7/2026)

Experience/Draft: R; signed with Buffalo following the 2025 NFL Draft

College: LSU

Acquired: UDFA signing

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Shand signed a three-year deal worth a total of $2.99 million. For the 2025 season, he carries a cap hit of $848,333 if he makes the 53-man roster. If he’s released, the Bills will be on the hook for a dead-cap charge of $25,000, which is the total sum of the guarantees on the deal.

2024 Recap: Shand started nine games at defensive end for the Tigers, and he had his most productive NCAA season as a result. He totaled 24 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks, adding one pass knockdown, as well. He showed solid athleticism at LSU’s Pro Day, running the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds, leaping 33.5” in the vertical jump and 9’7” in the broad jump, and pumping out 17 reps of the 225-pound bench press.

Positional outlook: The Bills have eight defensive ends, including Shand, on the 90-man roster. Landon Jackson, Joey Bosa, A.J. Epenesa, Greg Rousseau, Michael Hoecht, Javon Solomon, and Hayden Harris are the others.

2025 Offseason: Shand has attended all offseason workouts to date.

2025 Season outlook: Shand is a throwback style of defensive end for the Bills, as he profiles more like an edge-setter a la Shaq Lawson than he does a bendy pass-rusher like the team has featured of late. With an 81.25” wingspan, he’s definitely a longer player who, with the right technique, could give opposing offensive linemen problems when trying to set the edge.

There’s a small chance that Shand can show enough this summer to make the 53-man roster out of camp if someone ahead of him on the depth chart is injured. Given that Hoecht is suspended for the first six games thanks to a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, the Bills are already down one of their presumed edge rushers. Bosa is dealing with an injury and has been a risk in that department over the last few seasons, as well.

Even with those question marks, though, you’d have to assume that Epenesa, Rousseau, and Jackson are all well ahead of Shand, and last year’s fifth-round draft choice, Javon Solomon, showed promise and should be ready for a leap this year, as well. That’s at least six players ahead of Shand here in June.

Shand is likely fighting for a spot on the practice squad or auditioning for other clubs this preseason.

What grade would you give the Buffalo Bills’ offseason, so far?

NFL: Buffalo Bills Minicamp

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

We’re still only partway through minicamp, but plenty has already happened at One Bills Drive for us to reflect on the dozens of moves made.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Buffalo Bills fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Coming off a season where the Buffalo Bills won the AFC East a franchise-record fifth consecutive time and advanced to the AFC Championship, it’s reasonable to see the 2024 NFL season as a success overall. At season’s end quarterback Josh Allen was crowned the Associated Press NFL MVP as the “head of the spear” for Buffalo’s league-leading scoring offense last season.

Falling one game short of the Super Bowl tends to leave a few deep marks within NFL organizations, and general manager Brandon Beane made it a point to hit the ground running this past March in hopes of improving the roster. A year removed from the devastating cap hit created by parting ways with wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Beane and One Bills Drive had more funds to sign their own players to new deals and pursue free agents this spring.

It’s been a busy offseason with much to reflect on regarding this week’s Reacts question for Rumblers: How would you rate the Buffalo Bills’ offseason so far?

Need a refresher?

... there’s been plenty to applaud, but all hasn’t gone perfectly as planned this offseason. Consider the free-agent signings of defensive lineman Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi — both of whom produced failed tests for Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) and will each miss the first six weeks of the 2025 NFL season.

There’s also the situation with running back James Cook, who’s in the last year of his rookie deal and looking for a new contract before this one expires. Cook watched four teammates receive new lucrative deals (Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, Greg Rousseau, and Terrel Bernard), plus Josh Allen’s new multi-year deal — yet didn’t see the same benefit despite putting up a second-consecutive season over 1,000-plus rushing yards while setting a new franchise rushing touchdown mark with 16 TDs on the ground.

After missing voluntary work early, Cook did finally show up this week for mandatory minicamp, and has stated his intention to be at training camp later this summer. But it’s anyone’s guess at this point if the contract situation will boil over into the regular season to become an in-season distraction.

So, what say you, Rumblers: How would you grade the Buffalo Bills’ offseason so far?

Chime in: Which Buffalo Bills are under the most pressure in 2025?

Buffalo Bills v Kansas City Chiefs

Sean McDermott is most certainly on the list. Which Buffalo Bills are under the most pressure in 2025?

The most recent version of the Buffalo Bills have checked off almost every box they can check outside of the really big one. Entering 2025, they have a league MVP, an Executive of the Year, plenty of Pro Bowlers and a stacked roster from top to bottom. There are always question marks, though, so as we enter the deeper part of the 2025 offseason, it’s time to look at some of those potential answers.

Which Buffalo Bills are under the most pressure to perform in 2025? There are a lot of factors that go into that, so let’s look at some candidates.

Head to the comments to share your thoughts. Sign up for your own account here to leave a comment.

Head coach Sean McDermott (and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich)

Where have the Bills fallen short in the biggest moments? Coaching. Boneheaded mistakes in big moments like 13 seconds are one thing, but allowing the Chiefs to score their highest point total of the season two weeks before getting absolutely rocked by the Eagles is another. McD and his hand-picked protege Bobby Babich need to step up, especially in the playoffs, and especially against the Chiefs. This ain’t news.

Running back James Cook and center Connor McGovern

I am lumping them together because their success not only impacts the team, but both are in the last year of their contracts. They are playing for big money in addition to big expectations. I don’t know if those deals will be in Buffalo or elsewhere, but these Pro Bowlers will want top dollar or else they would have signed by now. They could both play their ways into contracts near the top of the market in 2025. A.J. Epenesa isn’t a former Pro Bowl player, but he’s played a lot of snaps over the last few years and is also looking for a new deal.

Wide receiver Keon Coleman and tight end Dalton Kincaid

Two Bills pass-catchers that underperformed admittedly lofty expectations in 2024, both Coleman and Kincaid could be looking down the barrel of being replaced on the roster if they don’t take a step forward in 2025. Both were dealing with nagging injuries last season, but could make huge impacts this season — or they could be replaced next offseason.

Special teams coach Chris Tabor

The NFL has tweaked their kickoff rules, which means more innovation is likely to enter the chat. Can Tabor make the change after giving up the first dynamic kickoff return touchdown in NFL history in 2024? Oh yeah, Quintin Morris (73% of ST snaps in 2024), Nicholas Morrow (41%), Casey Toohill (30%) , Mack Hollins (22%), Kaiir Elam (15%) are all gone and Baylon Spector (35%) and Cam Lewis (57%) aren’t roster locks. Such is the life of a special teams coordinator.

Defensive end Greg Rousseau

Show up in the biggest moments. Von Miller was a ghost against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, playing just 16 snaps with one assisted tackle to show for it. Ed Oliver balled out in that game, notching two QB hits and a fumble recovery. After signing a big contract this offseason, it’s Groot’s turn to take the next step like Spencer Brown did a year ago after signing his extension.

Safety Cole Bishop

Bishop missed a big chunk of his rookie offseason with an injury, but he looks poised to enter the starting lineup in his sophomore season. Like Coleman, if he has a subpar season, the Bills will be looking to replace him as soon as next offseason.

DT DeWayne Carter

The Bills kinda went out of their way to replace DeWayne Carter this offseason, eh? A few free agents, a couple draft picks, and all of the sudden we’re talking about how versatile Carter is just to justify his roster spot one year after his pick in the third round.

Kicker Tyler Bass

Bass seemed to rebound from his yips during the 2024 season and the Bills didn’t bring in any competition this offseason. He is the locked in kicker and his salary is guaranteed, but the way his contract works, Bass will be very easy to move on from in 2026. Buffalo will definitely pay him $4 million in 2026 with a good season, but if he’s shaky?

Left tackle Dion Dawkins (and RT Spencer Brown)

First of all, keeping Josh Allen upright is job 1A. This offseason, Dawkins lobbied the NFL to install a new Protector of the Year Award and they obliged. If he comes out and face-plants in the first year the award exists, that’s not a good look especially when he just signed a nice new deal a year ago. But seriously, keep Josh Allen healthy for real.

Quarterback Josh Allen

If you know ball, you know Josh Allen isn’t the reason the Bills haven’t gone to the Super Bowl and won the whole damn thing. But. When it’s time for the call to Canton, I don’t want Allen to go in as the best QB to never play in a Super Bowl. So it’s not fair to him, but he needs to keep wearing the cape, even with the MVP award and the awesome wife and the huge contract.

Guys I didn’t include on my list and why

General manager Brandon Beane

I don’t think Beane is on the hot seat with ownership or the fan base right now. And he shouldn’t be.

Wide receiver Khalil Shakir

As long as they keep saying everybody eats, he doesn’t need to be THE GUY.

Wide receivers Curtis Samuel, Josh Palmer, and Elijah Moore

The Bills have brought in a bunch of receivers, so any one of them doesn’t really have pressure on them. As long as everybody eats, individual receivers can go week to week.

Cornerbacks Maxwell Hairston, Tre’Davious White, and Dane Jackson

Individually, they all have a fair amount of pressure this offseason. But in the same way the receivers have coverage if they falter, the multitude of options here make it not as worrisome, I think.

Head to the comments to share your thoughts. Sign up for your own account here to leave a comment.

Bills rookie WR Stephen Gosnell motivated to turn heads this summer

NFL: Buffalo Bills Minicamp

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

The UDFA had his most productive college season in 2024 — just six months removed from major knee surgery

The Buffalo Bills enter the 2025 NFL season with an offensive unit that returns most of its principal players from the 2024 campaign. In fact, 20 of the team’s 25 snap-count leaders from that squad return this year. Only offensive lineman Will Clapp, wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling, tight end Quintin Morris, and wide receivers Amari Cooper and Mack Hollins are not with the club this season.

That level of continuity coupled with the fact that the Bills were second in the league in scoring, 10th in total yards, and ninth in both passing yards and rushing yards suggests that it will be difficult for newcomers to break into the rotation this season. Unless the team paid money in free agency or spent a priority draft choice on a player, it’s unlikely that we see too many new faces on offense this year.

In today’s installment of our “90 players in 90 days” series, we discuss an undrafted rookie wideout looking to prove his mettle this summer.

Name: Stephen Gosnell
Number: 89
Position: WR
Height/Weight: 6’2”, 198 pounds
Age: 23 (24 on 10/22/2025)
Experience/Draft: R; signed with Bills following the 2025 NFL Draft
College: Virginia Tech
Acquired: UDFA Signing

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Gosnell signed a three-year deal worth $2.98 million overall. For the 2025 season, he carries a cap hit of $845,000 if he makes the 53-man roster. If he is released, the Bills will be on the hook for a $40,000 dead-cap charge, which represents the entire signing bonus on the contract.

2024 Recap: After suffering a significant injury to his left knee in the 2023 Military Bowl, it was a slight surprise that Gosnell was cleared to play from the start of the 2024 NCAA season. He did not miss a game for the Hokies, and he was their team leader in receiving yards while finishing fourth in receptions. He caught 28 passes for 506 yards, both career-highs, and one touchdown.

He wasn’t invited to the Senior Bowl or the NFL Scouting Combine, something that he said did not sit well with him. At Virginia Tech’s Pro Day, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds, ran the three-cone drill in 6.96 seconds, leap 34” in the vertical jump and 10 feet in the broad jump, and ran the 20-yard shuttle in 4.15 seconds. He did not bench press at the Pro Day.

Positional outlook: Gosnell is joined on the 90-man roster by Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer, Curtis Samuel, Keon Coleman, Laviska Shenault Jr., KJ Hamler, Kelly Akharaiyi, Kaden Prather, Tyrell Shavers, Jalen Virgil, and Khristian Wilkerson.

2025 Offseason: Gosnell has attended all offseason activities to date.

2025 Season outlook: Barring a catastrophe, Gosnell is looking like a practice squad player at best on Buffalo’s 2025 roster. Given his short-area quickness and agility combined with his size and blocking ability, he profiles as the kind of receiver the Bills like to keep around for specific roles. If he can show some value on special teams, I could see the Bills looking to make sure that he sticks on the practice squad.

Teams don’t give an undrafted free agent a $40,000 signing bonus if they’re not interested in keeping him around. However, given the contracts and names ahead of him on the presumed current depth chart, it’s hard to see a way that Buffalo keeps Gosnell in a year where they have a realistic chance at winning the Super Bowl.

Gosnell has the traits and the “dog” to be a guy who sticks around a club by doing all the little things that don’t show up in a box score. He’ll likely have plenty of chances to show off his receiving ability this summer, as well. While I don’t expect him to be on the 53-man roster, it wouldn’t surprise me if he generates some positive press in preseason games this year. He’s likely to be a priority signing on the practice squad once September comes.

It’s time to hand out an offseason grade for the Buffalo Bills

NFL: Buffalo Bills Minicamp

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

The Bills are on their last major break before training camp and preparations for the 2025 NFL season begin. With that, it’s time to hand out an offseason grade!

Recently, we wanted to hear from Rumblers about the Buffalo Bills’ 2025 offseason. When taking time to reflect a bit on all that happened at One Bills Drive the last few months, what grade would you give the team’s offseason? As we like to do in partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook and SB Nation Reacts, it felt appropriate to ask for an assist from readers in handing out grades with school nearly finished for all ahead of summer.

In truth, the most reasonable grade at this point in time would be “Incomplete” — but we aren’t here to be reasonable and realistic. After all, there’s no time like the offseason to dissect each and every move and bit of news related to the Bills. Right? Well, you voted and also weighed in with some fantastic commentary on the subject.

Some of you are optimistic, which is an easy sentiment for Bills Mafia to grab hold of given how hope springs eternal for all sports fans. But others of you have some reservations despite overall approval.

For some, it’s less about the positions they targeted and more about the players they prioritized in those spots. That’s easily understood as well, since there’s hardly anything on Earth all people will agree about. There’s also the looming suspensions for new defenders Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi, plus the situation with James Cook to consider.

Yet, by and large, most readers are pleased with the work orchestrated by general manager Brandon Beane and company. Leading the way, better than half (54%) of voters gave the team a “B” for the moves made this offseason, while 38% of voters handed out an “A” to One Bills Drive. That makes for 92% of voters near-fully on board with the Bills’ plans.

The anomalous 1% of votes landing at “F” may very well be due to trolls, and other fan bases. Or, perhaps that 1% disapproving votes is tied to legitimate gripes with the current regime, and hopes for something more similar to what Bills Country experienced in the nearly two decades preceding the point when Buffalo finally made it back to the playoffs?

Nationally, voters were asked about HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” which will feature the Bills later this summer. A huge percentage of fans (81%) wish that the Cleveland Browns would have been the featured team on the now-canceled offseason edition of “Hard Knocks.”

No, that doesn’t imply NFL fans would rather watch the mistake-prone Browns over the Bills, just that they saw reason for the network and franchise to see the series through using Cleveland’s football team as it’s star this spring.

Also, an interesting poll asked readers about the situation with running back Nick Chubb. The Browns allowed Chubb to leave town and sign with the Houston Texans. Reacts wanted to know if NFL fans believe Chubb made a mistake in signing elsewhere.

The results told us that more fans than not (65%) see Chubb’s move to Houston as a mistake. What do you have to say about it: Would staying in Cleveland really have been in Chubb’s best interest?

Take your game to the next level all year long with FanDuel Sportsbook, the official sportsbook partner of SB Nation and Buffalo Rumblings.

Is Buffalo Bills RB Frank Gore Jr. destined for a featured role this summer?

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Buffalo Bills

rrrrr 4Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

After a year in the system, can the second-year back break through in 2025?

The Buffalo Bills placed greater emphasis on the running game in 2024, and in doing so they increased the overall efficiency of what was already an excellent offensive attack. It helps when the quarterback is a threat to run at all times, but when the team has three running backs who are capable of making house calls from anywhere on the field, it’s another boost entirely.

With all three of the team’s top running backs from last season returning, it’s difficult to envision a situation where someone “new” breaks into the rotation. In Buffalo’s case, any “new” faces won’t actually be new, because the other running backs on the 90-man roster were also with the Bills at some point last season. With so much success on the ground, the team would likely benefit from not fixing what isn’t broken.

In today’s installment of “90 players in 90 days,” we discuss a running back with a famous name.

Name: Frank Gore Jr.
Number: 20
Position: RB
Height/Weight: 5’8”, 195 pounds
Age: 23 (24 on 3/13/2026)
Experience/Draft: 1; signed with Buffalo following the 2024 NFL Draft
College: Southern Mississippi
Acquired: UDFA signing

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Gore signed a reserve/future contract with Buffalo on January 27 following the end of the Bills’ season. That two-year deal is worth $1.853 million overall. If he makes the 53-man roster, he’ll carry a cap hit of $844,000 for the season. If he’s released, Buffalo will be on the hook for a dead-cap charge of $8,000.

2024 Recap: Gore Jr. had a standout preseason, carrying 33 times for 163 yards and a score in the Bills’ three exhibition contests. He also had four receptions for 16 yards on six targets.

While he showed out in the exhibition games, he was still buried on the team’s depth chart, and he ended up being released as part of the final roster cuts in August. The Bills signed him to their practice squad soon thereafter.

He did not appear in a regular season game, though he was elevated for one contest — Buffalo’s Week 6 victory over the New York Jets. He was active in that game, but he didn’t play on either offense or special teams.

Positional outlook: Gore Jr. is part of a running back group that includes James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty Johnson, Darrynton Evans, and fullback Reggie Gilliam.

2025 Offseason: Gore Jr. has participated in all offseason activities to date.

2025 Season outlook: While there’s definitely some uncertainty surrounding Cook due to his contract situation, the Bills’ top rusher has been at all mandatory offseason work, so there isn’t any reason to assume that he’ll be anything other than the team’s top back once again. With Davis and Johnson back after successful runs in 2024, it’s hard to see a scenario where Gore Jr. breaks camp with the team. Unless one of those top three players is injured, he’s likely looking to remain on the practice squad if he isn’t scooped up by another team after final cuts.

Gore Jr. showed some potential last summer, displaying great contact balance and vision as a runner, but he lacks the top-end burst of Cook and Johnson, and he doesn’t have the receiving chops of any of Buffalo’s top runners. He’s absolutely going to have a big preseason again, but that will likely be borne out of opportunity and necessity more than anything else. If he’s going to appear in meaningful games with the Bills, it likely won’t be until the 2026 season.

Josh Allen’s continued impact on EA Sports Madden NFL

Buffalo Bills v Los Angeles Chargers

It’s been two years since Allen was on Madden’s cover, but his time with the team continues to make an impact today.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen continues making an impact in the world of the EA Sports Madden NFL franchise nearly two years after his cover appearance. Despite many believing that updated rosters are the only significant change, the much-maligned video game does implement new features and adds improvements with each release.

For example, when Josh Allen was involved with Madden NFL 23 he had a very specific request for Clint Oldenburg who’s the current EA Sports American Football Production Director and ratings adjuster. As Oldenburg explained, Allen apparently sought to have Madden add long snappers into the game.

One of the low key features we’re most proud of is the modern depth charts. I once made a promise to Josh Allen when he was on our cover to get long snappers in the game. It took two years, but we got it done… and so much more. #Madden26

— Clint Oldenburg (@ClintOldenburg) June 18, 2025

Bills long snapper Reid Ferguson is a fan favorite of Bills Mafia, and he’s the team’s longest-tenured player who continues to keep a very important, yet often overlooked, position on lock down. He’s among the best at his position, a trait rivaled perhaps only by his infectious personality and giving spirit. Word on the street is that he’s also throws a decent football upright, and will make you pay if you return the football in his direction on special teams.

As most things with coding for video game development go, it can and often does become tricky to add in what outsiders believe should be a simple idea. One change can inadvertently spiral into a detrimental chain-reaction that sabotages long-established code and key functions. That’s especially true when developing a game across platforms.

But Allen held enough sway with Oldenburg that the idea became a pet project, one that after two years in the making finally sees NFL longsnappers debut in Madden 26. We don’t yet have concrete ratings to share for the latest edition of Madden NFL, but Ferguson has been in Madden previously as a low-rated pseudo-tight end. It will be interesting to discover how Ferguson has been rated now, given his direct impact on the new feature, and with Oldenburg — the ratings adjuster — in charge of getting it done.

Here’s to you, Reid Ferguson — you’re in the game!

Buffalo Bills tackling familiar risk with massive rookie DT Deone Walker

NFL: Buffalo Bills Minicamp

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

Will it be a “redshirt” year for the massive rookie? Or will he be able to contribute right away?

The Buffalo Bills tried to improve their defensive line once again this offseason, pouring plenty of resources into both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions. This is far from the first time that general manager Brandon Beane has sought to improve the defensive line, as he has consistently tinkered with the group in search of a combination that can dominate a game.

With respect to Beane and the Bills’ personnel department, they have consistently fallen short of that goal. While other teams — the Philadelphia Eagles, for one — have been able to create a front four capable of disrupting even the best teams and quarterbacks, the best-laid plans of the Bills and their staff have fallen short of that goal. The effort has been there, but the results have not been what Beane and company have desired.

Will this finally be the front-four combination that pushes the Bills over the hump? In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days, we discuss a rookie coming off a rather significant injury who has tremendous potential.

Name: Deone Walker
Number: 96
Position: DT
Height/Weight: 6’7”, 331 pounds
Age: 21 (22 on 3/11/2026)
Experience/Draft: R; selected by Buffalo in the fourth round (No. 109 overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft
College: Kentucky
Acquired: Fourth-round draft pick

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Walker signed his four-year rookie contract, a pact worth $5,247,040 overall, on June 13. For the 2025 season, Walker’s cap hit is $1,101,760 and the dead-cap charge Buffalo would carry if they were to release him is $1,047,040.

2024 Recap: After a stellar 2023-2024 season where Walker totaled 55 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, he had a down year as a junior. Walker played in 11 games, notching 37 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. It was revealed that he played his junior season with a back injury that limited him throughout the year. The specific injury is called “pars defect,” which is a fracture between two vertebrae in his spine.

Walker did not know about the injury during the season, saying that he really didn’t know what it was until the NFL Scouting Combine. His athletic testing was average to below average, showing a 25” vertical and a 104” broad jump at the Combine. At Kentucky’s pro day, he ran the forty-yard dash in 5.28 seconds and benched 225 pounds a total of 22 times. His Relative Athletic Score (RAS) was just 3.74.

Positional outlook: Walker is one of nine defensive tackles on the current 90-man roster. Fellow rookie T.J. Sanders, whom the Bills drafted in Round Two, remains unsigned. DeWayne Carter, DaQuan Jones, Ed Oliver, and Zion Logue return from last season’s club. Casey Rogers, Marcus Harris, and Larry Ogunjobi are the veteran additions to the club.

2025 Offseason: Walker has participated in offseason work in a limited fashion, saying that he’ll be ready for training camp.

2025 Season outlook: Buffalo is taking a risk on Walker bouncing back, both from his back injury and in terms of his production, after a down year last season. For Bills fans of a certain age, this might give flashbacks to Torrell Troup — another defensive tackle drafted who had a preexisting back injury. The Bills and their medical staff are confident that Walker can play this year without restrictions, and if he can do that while also showing the disruptive ability he did as a sophomore at Kentucky, then this will be a huge steal for the Bills.

As it stands, Walker is really the only player who has the size/length profile to slot in as the backup one-tech to DaQuan Jones on the current roster, and given his injury uncertainty combined with Jones’ down year last season, that gives me some pause as to what the exact plan is along the defensive interior. Ogunjobi is suspended for the first six games thanks to a positive PED test, so the plan likely involves playing someone out of position for some snaps at the one-tech while they ensure that Walker is in football shape.

I believe Walker will start the year on the 53-man roster, but there is an outside chance that he’s eased in some way. Once training camp opens, his participation is something to monitor closely.

If he begins camp on a list like the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, the Bills may try to keep him on that list to start the season, giving him four games to continue his strength and conditioning. However, if they deem him ready to go, I imagine it will come with him on a limited snap count of sorts for the early going.

Walker likely slots in as DT4 or DT5 while Ogunjobi is out, and he could slide higher up the depth chart if the Bills release Jones, which is a distinct possibility given his cap number ($9.408 million), the savings that come with releasing him ($5.5 million as a post-June 1 release), and his lack of overall production last year.

This is all a convoluted way of saying that the defensive interior is definitely a positional group in flux, and thanks to plenty of factors, there are bound to be some moving parts. What will Walker’s role be? We may not know until September, and even then, it likely won’t remain the same throughout the whole season.

90 players in 90 days: P Brad Robbins

Syndication: Democrat and Chronicle

Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Who will win the Bills’ 2025 punting competition?

The Buffalo Bills don’t punt very much of late. That’s a good thing, as they have boasted an elite offense for the entirety of this decade. In past years, we’ve discussed how Buffalo’s punting gig is really a holding competition, where the job referenced in the title is actually secondary to the main job the punter will do throughout the season.

While that may be technically true (Sam Martin punted 150 times over the last three regular seasons for the Bills, but between extra-point attempts and field goal attempts, he held for 253 kicks by Tyler Bass), a good punter who can flip the field and pin opponents deep is still a valuable asset for a squad. Buffalo felt it could be better in that department, so they released Martin and decided to go younger at punter.

In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days,” we discuss one of the combatants in the punting competition set to take place this summer.

Name: Brad Robbins
Number: 40
Position: P
Height/Weight: 6’1”, 203 pounds
Age: 26 (27 on 10/6/2025)
Experience/Draft: 2; selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round (No. 217 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft
College: Michigan
Acquired: Signed with Buffalo on 3/31/2025

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Robbins signed a one-year contract worth $960,000 overall. If he makes the 53-man roster, that will be his cap hit for the season. There’s no guaranteed money on the contract, so he can be released without the Bills having to carry a dead-cap charge.

2024 Recap: Robbins suffered a hip flexor strain during training camp, and he began the season on the Injured Reserve list with a return designation. The Bengals activated him at the end of September, and then waived him in early October. He didn’t sign with a team, so he missed the entire season.

In 2023, Robbins punted 76 times for a gross average of 44.3 yards per punt and a net average of just 40.3 yards per punt. That net placed him 26th in the league, one spot ahead of Buffalo’s punter that season, Sam Martin. 26 of Robbins’ punts ended in a fair catch, and 20 of his punts ended up downed inside the 20-yard line.

Positional outlook: Robbins and Jake Camarda are the only two punters on the current roster.

2025 Offseason: Robbins has participated in offseason work to date

2025 Season outlook: It will be interesting to see how the Bills divvy reps for their punters this summer, both in practice and in preseason games. While both have professional experience, neither Robbins nor Camarda has been special during their time in the league.

Buffalo will likely go with the player they feel is the better holder for Tyler Bass, unless one of the two punters is significantly better than the other in terms of hang time on their punts. Buffalo’s special teams group has prioritized hang time and limiting returns over distance and directional kicking in recent years, and I assume that trend will continue here.

Two men enter, one man will remain — unless, of course, Buffalo decides to look elsewhere for their punter once roster cuts happen. Who will be the Bills’ punter in 2025? Your guess is as good as mine, but we shouldn’t assume that either Robbins or Camarda is a lock for the roster come September.

Tyreek Hill calls Bills “a bunch of b*****s” regarding their defensive scheming

Fanatics Fest NYC 2025

The Dolphins are 2-7 against Buffalo since Hill’s arrival in Miami

It’s safe to say that Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is more than a little irritated at his relative lack of success against the Buffalo Bills over the last few years. Speaking on a panel at Fanatics Fan Fest, the speedster and former All-Pro explained that “whenever we play the Bills, those guys typically play Cover 4 because they’re a bunch of bitches.”

Hill has played nine games against Buffalo during his tenure with the Miami Dolphins, compiling a stat line of 45 receptions (five per game), 470 yards (52.2), and two touchdowns (0.22). The Bills played cover 4 15% of the time overall in 2024, tied for 11th-most in the NFL. They employed two-high (cover 2, cover 4, or cover 6) coverages 73.0% of the time against the Dolphins in 2024 and 52.7% against all their other opponents.

The idea that the Bills would play more two-high coverages against Miami than other teams makes perfect sense. Although the Dolphins have been ineffective overall at dethroning the Bills from atop the AFC East in recent years, they still employ two great vertical threats in Hill and former top-10 pick Jaylen Waddle.

Miami famously put up 70 points against the Denver Broncos in 2023, with Hill racking up 157 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. The Dolphins compiled 726 yards of total offense that game and a whopping 10.23 yards per play. Their quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains a top tier vertical passer, having an adjusted completion percentage of 50% or better on throws 20+ yards down the field in three of the last four years.

Compare those results to those against the Bills: in each of the last four seasons, Tagovailoa has had at least one game against Buffalo that resulted in his adjusted completion percentage being a bottom-three game for him that season. He, like Hill, has played nine games against Buffalo as a Dolphin with a stat line of 1830 passing yards, nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a passer rating of 80.5. Tagovailoa also happens to be the only quarterback in the NFL with a passer rating over 100 in each of his last three seasons, as a point of comparison.

The low points of the Dolphins’ passing offense consistently seem to come when they play against the back-to-back-to-back-to back AFC East champions.

Make no mistake: it’s not an accident that the Bills employ Cover 4 against the Dolphins. If anything, the remainder of Miami’s opponents should be wondering why they’re not playing it (or playing it as effectively) as Buffalo is. It’s proven to be a winning strategy for Buffalo and apparently a thorn in the side for Miami and Tyreek Hill specifically.

Is a break out season ahead for Buffalo Bills WR Keon Coleman and TE Dalton Kincaid?

Jacksonville Jaguars v Buffalo Bills

With the start of Buffalo Bills training camp still a few weeks away, I spent some time thinking about potential story lines for the club’s offense. The rhetoric around running back James Cook and his contract has died down — for now, which had me contemplating potential breakout players for Joe Brady and the offensive side of the football.

Throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamp, plenty of conversation has focused on wide receiver Keon Coleman and tight end Dalton Kincaid. Each battled through injuries during the 2024 season, leaving fans a bit disappointed despite some current flashes from both. While it’s understandable that injuries hampered their production last year, it also gives fans reason to be optimistic for what could be a breakout season in 2025.

Coleman appeared ready to break out, following stellar performances in Week 7 (vs. Tennessee — 4 catches for 125 yards) and Week 8 (at Seattle — 5 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown). An injury against the Miami Dolphins the following week kept him out for over a month, and Coleman was never the same after returning.

For Kincaid it was a Week 10 injury against the Indianapolis Colts that kept him on the shelf for over a month. Kincaid didn’t play more than 50% of snaps in any game following the injury — something that only happened once in the first nine games of the year.

While I’m optimistic about both players heading into training camp, I took to social media to ask followers to weigh in. As you’ll see in the results, there was plenty of confidence from Bills Mafia.

Who has a breakout season for the Bills offense this season? If you vote neither, respond with your choice on who you think will. @BuffRumblings

— Anthony Marino (@AnthMarino) June 21, 2025

I thought that 180 responses provided a decent sample size, and was not surprised that over 25% of respondents thought that both would breakout in 2025. Those who voted “neither” weighed in with their thoughts that Elijah Moore would have a stellar season and shine for the Bills in 2025. Moore was certainly a high-potential weapon after being selected in the second round by the New York Jets, and I can understand the optimism around his arrival in Buffalo.

So what are your thoughts on the potential for Coleman and Kincaid this year? Is there someone else that you see as a breakout candidate? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
