Twitter hammers Zac Taylor and Bengals after deflating loss to the Steelers

gettyimages-2247016247.jpg

The Bengals got an injection of hope recently with the news that Joe Burrow would not only be back this season, but earlier than expected, with a potential Thanksgiving return.

With the prospect of Burrow returning, the Bengals could turn their attention to a potentially season-defining game against the Steelers. With a 3-6 record, the team needs to win the majority of its remaining games if they are going to make the playoffs.

However, despite a seemingly renewed sense of potential for the season, the offense came out flat against the Steelers, with the magic from Joe Flacco not continuing. While that would make the game seem completely hopeless, the defense actually managed to hold its own for the majority of the game. Like so many recent weeks, though, the defense folded when it mattered most. The offense had brought it back to a one-possession game in the fourth quarter, and the defense gave up a lengthy touchdown drive, essentially sealing the Bengals’ fate in this game.

The team now needs to be nearly perfect down the stretch to have a hope in the playoffs, and with a matchup against a talented Patriots team, it is tough to see a path to relevance this season. So let’s take a look at the Twitter reactions to the Bengals’ loss to the Steelers.

Bengals vs. Twitter Reactions

The Bengals really were down 10-9 with Mason Rudolph in and somehow lost 34-12.

Zac Taylor…

For those fans that have hope…

There have been two teams in NFL history that started a season 3-7 and made the playoffs:

1) The 2020 Commanders
2) The 2022 Jaguars

This is the 20th season with 7 or more losses after 10 games. This is the Bengals 58th season.

Bengals were coming off a bye.

Steelers defense is ranked 28th.

Mason Rudolph played the entire second half.

And they’re down 34-12.

Unacceptable at every level.

I’d fire everyone off vibes alone. Dark cloud over this team the past few seasons…

I just can’t see how Zac Taylor and Duke Tobin survive this. One or both has to go after this year.

@Bengals Are you there? Please do something do prove to us why we should continue to believe in your ability to run this organization. Fire Zac Taylor before he gets back to Cincinnati. Being conservative isn't going to work anymore. WE NEED CHANGE. #Bengals #WhoDey

Fire Duke Tobin!!

Fire Zac Taylor!!

Clean house and hire an actual front office staff, let them hire a coach who brings in their entire staff, expand the scouting department, and keep the family out of personnel decisions.

Won’t happen, but that is what they need. We all know…

3 things we learned from the Bengals’ deflating loss to the Steelers

gettyimages-2246995834.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals’ season is all but over.

Their last chance to keep their postseason hopes alive until Joe Burrow can return was an unmitigated disaster, with Cincinnati losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers by 22 points.

As always, the Bengals can try to learn from their mistakes. (At this point, they must have multiple Ph.D.s in losing.)

Here’s what we learned:

Joe Flacco is not healthy

Don’t let the veteran’s 470-yard performance against the Chicago Bears a week after an AC joint injury fool you.

He is hurting.

Since he arrived in Cincinnati, Flacco has been a downfield machine. But that was not the case against Pittsburgh.

The pain in his shoulder is likely to blame for a less aggressive passing attack and throws with less zip than you expect from the big-armed QB.

Zac Taylor has 100% lost control of this team

After Jake Browning missed Ja’Marr Chase badly in a Monday night game vs. the Denver Broncos, the star WR had some words for his coach on the sideline.

In the postgame press conference, Taylor praised Chase for his desire to win instead of attempting to diffuse the situation in front of the media. That is somewhat different from how he handled Chase Brown criticizing the defense, largely because of the cache that the receiver has.

But now it seems that Taylor simply doesn’t have his team disciplined, and that includes Chase.

Video evidence suggests that Chase spit on Jalen Ramsey, which would be a shocking move from a level-headed player who takes football very seriously.

Field-level view of the second altercation between Ja'Marr Chase and Jalen Ramsey. Chase said "I didn't spit on nobody."

The video clearly shows he did.#Bengals @FOX19 pic.twitter.com/ooGzInoPdS

— Austin Briski (@austin_briski) November 16, 2025

This came just a couple weeks after some defensive players reportedly laughed off interviews following a defensive collapse against the Chicago Bears and said “catch you on Monday.”

The image of these current Bengals is one of a team that doesn’t have any sort of leadership in Burrow’s absence.

Taylor’s strength used to be his ability to unite his players. That appears to be gone now.

Myles Murphy may not be a bust

There could be a silver lining for the defense.

Myles Murphy, who hasn’t really flashed potential since being drafted in round one a couple years ago, had his best game yet as a Bengal, notching four pressures, a sack, and six stops.

PFF has Myles Murphy currently charted for 4 pressures including a sack, and 6 "stops" (defined as tackles that constitute a "failure" for the offense – think success rate)

It'd be pretty cool if this is a game we look back at as a breakout game for Murphy.

— Jake Liscow (@JakeLiscow) November 16, 2025

Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.

Myles Murphy impresses in loss to the Steelers

imagn-27605752.jpg

Myles Murphy led the team in pressures with six in the game. He also led the team with five stops in the run game. He combined with BJ Hill for a half sack during the game, as well. This was by far the best game I have seen from Murphy.

The Bengals will have to make the decision on picking up his fifth-year option ahead of next season. Seeing him play well down the stretch could go a long way in making that an easier decision for the front office. Let’s take a look at some of his more impressive plays from Sunday via the All-22 film.

He immediately made his presence known by getting his hand up on the initial read for Rodgers on the first play of the game. He continued working up the field and forced Rodgers into a short check-down pass for a minimal gain.

First play and Murphy gets his hand up in the passing lane, forced Rodgers to adjust. Continued working. Good effort. pic.twitter.com/Hp4edHjkjN

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Next, he didn’t bite too hard on the play fake, staying home and forcing Rodgers into a tough throw. Great awareness and effort early in the game from Murphy.

Murphy doing his job and staying home to at least try and make the throw a bit more difficult pic.twitter.com/b3UjgzbB4N

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

The first play that landed him in the stat sheet with a tackle was one he worked down the line and helped tackle Jaylen Warren. It is a good thing he did, because it looked like Dax Hill initially whiffed on the tackle attempt.

Probably a good thing Murphy was able to get off his block here to help Dax out. pic.twitter.com/6voImgDFND

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

It wasn’t a completely clean performance from Murphy. On this long Warren run, he could have made more of an effort in backside pursuit. However, he was the least of the problems in this play. It is never good when you end up with five players on the ground near the line of scrimmage.

Woof pic.twitter.com/tfP84uTQTn

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Murphy also had a couple of penalties on the day. The first one was a play where Aaron Rodgers was able to get him to jump offside on a hard count.

Rodgers did get Murphy to jump offsides here pic.twitter.com/Ywha2yES3b

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

There were multiple plays in which he was able to keep contain, shed a block, and then make a tackle. He was constantly active throughout the game.

Good awareness by Murphy. Keeps contain, then works down the line and makes the tackle. pic.twitter.com/g08IGTVuz3

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

One thing this defense lacks at times, which is just flat-out inexcusable, is effort. Geno Stone’s non-tackle attempt on Darnell Washington was a prime example from this game. That is why this next play is one of my favorites on the day for Myles. He redirects, pursues down the field, and makes the tackle. We need more effort from everyone on that defense. It was nice to see him giving that on Sunday, beyond that initial early run from Warren.

This is A+ effort by Myles Murphy pic.twitter.com/Nmdaz6JfYn

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Troy Fautanu is a former first round pick for the Steelers at right tackle. He had been garnering praise for his recent play. Murphy likely put an end to that hype on Sunday. Fautanu had a tough game going against Murphy. This next play is one of several examples to come.

Felt like Fautanu might have moved a bit early, Murphy pushed him right back into Rodgers on an incompletion either way. pic.twitter.com/wi7ZVOJSTk

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

The very next play after the one above, Murphy pursues from the back side of the play. His effort leads to another tackle near the line of scrimmage.

Very next play, great effort by Murphy on the backside pursuit to make another tackle pic.twitter.com/9r3uqBNIaI

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Myles also had a couple of good reps combining with McKinley Jackson. It was nice to see Jackson not only active, but also making some impact rushing the passer.

Myles Murphy and McKinley Jackson staying active helps lead to the incompletion pic.twitter.com/MU8U3y2noX

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

All of that effort Murphy was playing with finally led to a sack for the Bengals defense. Murphy combined with BJ Hill to sack Aaron Rodgers during the play.

Hill and Murphy combine for the sack on Rodgers pic.twitter.com/xTn5sHbBvw

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

There was another play later on where Murphy and Hill created some pressure on Rodgers. However, this time he was able to escape and pick up a first down rushing.

Good initial pressure from Murphy and Hill but no one finishes and Rodgers picks up the first down with his legs pic.twitter.com/n5413cko7j

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Murphy’s second penalty of the day came on what was deemed a low hit on Aaron Rodgers. The view from the All-22 at least makes it look more like a penalty than the initial viewing from the television broadcast. Either way, I still thought it was kind of a weak call. The pass rush was very impressive, but the flag was not.

Another great rush from Murphy, flagged for a low hit on Rodgers though. pic.twitter.com/DuqTYOlyL9

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Murphy didn’t just get pressure against Fautanu. He switched sides and went up against the left tackle of the Steelers, Broderick Jones. Jones is also a former first-round draft pick for Pittsburgh. Murphy almost had another sack on this play.

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

Murphy added a couple of more pressures along with another run stop in the game. The Bengals’ defense didn’t have a ton of snaps overall in the second half. That was due to a pick-six and a fumble returned for touchdowns by Pittsburgh.

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) November 17, 2025

It is important to note that this is only one game from Myles Murphy. I don’t think anyone is trying to crown him based on this one performance. However, it was refreshing to see him have a game like this. Now the question will be, can he build on that? He will need to stack multiple games in a row to show that he deserves having the Bengals pick up his fifth-year option.

Ja’Marr Chase appeal denied by Jordy Nelson; how much money Bengals WR loses

gettyimages-2247024748.jpg

When video evidence of Ja’Marr Chase spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey was posted, many assumed the NFL would hand down a suspension to the Bengals’ star wide receiver, and that is exactly what happened. Chase was hit with a one-game ban, which he appealed. Chase’s argument was shaky at best, arguing that if he was spitting on Ramsey on purpose, he would have spit in his face and not on Ramsey’s jersey or the ground.

Tuesday night, we learned that Jordy Nelson, who was the hearing officer assigned to Chase’s appeal, decided to uphold the suspension.

Chase will now officially be out when the Bengals take on the New England Patriots this Sunday, leaving Joe Flacco without his best weapon while taking on one of the two 9-2 teams in the NFL.

Chase will also lose a whopping $507,156 for missing the game. Chase will lose not only his game check, but a roster bonus written into his contract as well.

Chase has come a long way as a leader of the team, even earning the honor of captain ahead of this season. This certainly isn’t the kind of thing you want to see your team captain doing, but one mistake doesn’t define him forever, and his teammates will almost certainly have his back.

The disaster of a season will roll on, but one of the few bright spots will be sidelined for Week 12.

Hearing officer Jordy Nelson, jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA, has upheld the one-game suspension of Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase.

Bengals open practice window for Mike Gesicki and Daijahn Anthony

gettyimages-2239565637.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals have dealt with their fair share of injuries in what is shaping up to be a very disappointing season. From star players like Joe Burrow and Trey Hendrickson to players like Mike Gesicki and Daijahn Anthony, several players they depend on as contributors have missed time.

Burrow’s practice window has already been reopened, and on Wednesday, the Bengals opened the 21-day practice windows for both Gesicki and Anthony.

Gesicki last played in the loss to the Green Bay Packers on October 12th, before being placed on injured reserve for a pectoral injury. Gesicki was thought to have the potential to become a focal point with Joe Flacco’s affinity for tight ends, but was sidelined in Flacco’s first start. Noah Fant has filled in admirably, but having Gesicki back in the fold would be a net positive, especially in the red zone.

Anthony has been on injured reserve since August 26th with a hamstring injury suffered in the preseason. His window being opened is a good sign for the second-year safety. Anthony has yet to see significant playing time since coming in to the NFL, but with the struggles in the defensive backfield, a healthy Anthony could get a real shot down the stretch.

The Bengals have 21 days to either activate both players or shut them down for the season.

This may be the most damning stat on the 2025 Bengals

imagn-27029277.jpg

There are so many stats that are out there on the 2025 Cincinnati Bengals that are just hard to fathom. At the same time, they’re also not hard to fathom.

This Bengals team is a failed experiment. The front office told us that by making a few minor tweaks, along with Zac Taylor making us believe that bringing in a new defensive coaching staff, all the bad luck from 2024 would right itself in 2025.

Wrong. If anything, the bad luck from 2024, or so we thought, was a precursor to what this season would be like.

Remember all those blown fourth-quarter leads and missed opportunities last season? Well, the Bengals have been worse in the fourth quarter this season.

The Bengals have allowed 14+ points in the fourth quarter in five straight games. Mind you, Joe Flacco has started all five of those games.

Previously, they gave up 17 in Green Bay, 14 in the first meeting with Pittsburgh, 23 against the Jets, and 16 against the Bears.

The streak of five in a row breaks the previous single-season record of four shared by eight teams, including the 2025 New York Giants.

The others (with final win-loss record):

2017 Colts (4-12)

2009 Rams (1-15)

1996 Ravens (4-12)

1986 Broncos (11-5)

1964 49ers (4-10)

1961 Raiders (2-12)

1950 Colts (1-11)

Only one of those teams finished with a winning record. The 1986 Broncos played in Super Bowl XXI, courtesy of the legendary “The Drive” authored by John Elway in the AFC Championship.

The Bengals have allowed 84 points in the fourth quarter over their last five games. That’s an average of 16.8 points per fourth quarter. How does that not lead to any changes? That’s almost three scores per quarter! So, the same “bad luck” in the fourth quarter last year is worse this season. Way worse.

The 2022 Colts also gave up 84 in a five-game span, as did the 1980 Seahawks.

Two teams prior to the Super Bowl era had more:

1965 Oilers, 92

1948 Lions, 89

The Bengals are on pace to allow 175 points in the fourth quarter this year.

The only team in NFL history to give up more fourth-quarter points was the 2020 Raiders, who allowed 176 in a 16-game season for a per-game average of 11.0.

The Bengals would need to surrender 188 points this year to be worse than the 2020 Raiders’ per-game average.

This defense is beyond embarrassing. It’s a disgrace and humiliation on a lot of levels.

5 general manager options for the Bengals

gettyimages-2239167304.jpg

Ever since the homerun that was Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, and Logan Wilson in the first, second, and third rounds, the Cincinnati Bengals have drafted poorly. This not only puts de facto GM Duke Tobin on the hot seat, but it also puts the whole setup of the front office on the hot seat.

So, what are the Bengals to do?

Should they make a subtle change, sweeping changes, or stay on the path?

It is tough to judge who will be a good head coach, because what makes you a good coordinator doesn’t always make you a good head coach.

It is even harder to determine who will be a good general manager because we see next to nothing of what these people do. Their work is behind the scenes.

It is even more confusing when you consider how different the Bengals are. I mean, are we even talking about a real general manager position here? Then there is the size of the scouting department and the involvement of coaches.

It’s not for everyone.

Maybe it is for one of these guys. They all come from NFL organizations that have consistently put talented groups on the field year in and year out.

Chad Alexander – Assistant GM – Los Angeles Chargers

Alexander has 26 years of NFL experience, coming up through the Baltimore Ravens organization as a scout and later director of player personnel. He moved to the New York Jets, where he had the same title and was involved in some excellent moves, including the selection of Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson. He then headed to Los Angeles to work with another Harbaugh.

Alexander’s father, Hubbard, was a coach for over 40 years. He had some big-time college assistant jobs as well as roles with the Cowboys, Vikings, Saints, and the Cincinnati Marshals of the NIFL

Alex Halaby – Assistant General Manager – Philadelphia Eagles

Alec Halaby started as an intern with the Eagles in 2007 and consistently climbed up the ranks. He spent 6 years as the Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy before being named Assistant General Manager in 2022.

In his 16 years with the Eagles, Halaby has been credited with merging analytical evaluation with scouting reports to predict outcomes.

He’s a Harvard grad, but I am sure the family of Dartmouth grads who own the Bengals could overlook that.

Mike Greenberg – Assistant General Manager – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Mike Greenberg’s career mirrors Halaby’s pretty closely.

He started out with the Buccaneers as a Player Personnel Assistant in 2010. He quickly moved up to the Coordinator of Football Administration, then, after 8 years as the Director of Football Administration, he became the Vice President of Football Administration.

In 2023, he was named Assistant General Manager and specializes in salary cap management.

John McKay – Assistant General Manager – Los Angeles Rams

Zac Taylor was Duke Tobin’s guy. What if the next “GM” is Taylor’s guy?

McKay started with the Rams as a scouting assistant in 2016. In the two years that Taylor was in Los Angeles, McKay was a Pro Scout. He quickly moved p to the Assistant Director of Pro Scouting then the Director of Pro Scouting before becoming the Assistant General Manager this year.

McKay has a strong football lineage as the son of Atlanta Falcons CEO Rich McKay and grandson of former USC coach John McKay.

Trey Brown – Assistant General Manager – Cincinnati Bengals

Let’s face it, this is the most likely scenario.

Trey Brown is a name we hear in the offseason when he gets general manager interviews, and we are told how unfortunate it will be if the Bengals lose him.

Well, if he is so talented that other teams want him, maybe they should keep him around.

Brown spent time as a scout with both the Patriots and Eagles (not bad), then had larger roles with the Eagles, Birmingham Iron, and St. Louis BattleHawks before joining the Bengals as a scout.

Unlike the other candidates, Brown has experience with different teams and an understanding of how this front office works.

Bengals fans: Does potential return of Joe Burrow boost your confidence?

imagn-27607104.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Bengals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

There’s no way to get around it: It’s been a rough season for the Bengals, and last week was especially rough. The team is sitting at 3-7 and third in the AFC North heading into this week’s matchup against the Patriots. Ja’Marr Chase is suspended this week after spitting on Jalen Ramsey during last week’s loss to the Steelers, triggering a retaliation punch from Ramsey that got the Pittsburgh cornerback ejected from the game.

But there’s more that goes into fan confidence than just what’s happening right now, and there is at least one bright spot: the progress Joe Burrow is making as he works his way back from surgery to repair a severe turf toe injury.

How are you feeling about the Bengals heading into this week’s game? Take our survey, and chat about it with your fellow fans in the comments.

Top 10 NFL head coach candidates if the Bengals make a move from Zac Taylor

gettyimages-2235423641.jpg

Disclaimer: I don’t think it is going to happen.

If this were the year that the Bengals decided to move on from head coach Zac Taylor, this would be a hot job. Yes, there are some idiosyncrasies to the Bengals’ setup, but it is not very often that a job comes up with a quarterback like Joe Burrow on the squad.

The general rule for coaches is that if you are an offensive coach, you should put a lot of resources into the other side of the ball and use your expertise to be successful on offense. Zac Taylor and the Bengals have just loaded up on offense and have not been able to scheme or develop their way into a successful defense.

So maybe they should go with a defensive-minded coach the next time they hire a head coach.

Most of the coaches on this list are just that.

1. Brian Flores – Defensive Coordinator – Minnesota Vikings

The 44-year-old Brian Flores got a raw deal in his first stint as a head coach. Although he failed to make the playoffs in his three seasons with the Dolphins, Flores won 10 and 9 games in his final two seasons, respectively. This was no small feat, given the unimpressive quarterback play. In his final season, the Dolphins started slow before going on a 7-game winning streak.

Flores came up under Belichick, working his way up the chain for 11 years before getting his first head coaching gig in Miami. After a year with the Steelers, he headed to Minnesota, where he has led a dynamic defense for the past three seasons.

Flores is a great fit for the Bengals. He has the technical coaching skills as well as the demeanor to bring about a new age of accountability in Cincinnati.

2. Robert Saleh – Defensive Coordinator – San Francisco 49ers

Robert Saleh is another example of a good coach who got shafted out of his first head coaching job. He was starting to build something with the Jets before management burned it to the ground to give Aaron Rodgers everything he wanted.

After that Saleh went back to San Francisco, reuniting with Kyle Shanahan and resuming his duties as defensive coordinator. That was where Saleh’s defense helped fuel the 49ers on a Super Bowl run, posting 48 sacks and 27 turnovers.

Saleh is an established coach who gets results.

3. Jesse Minter – Defensive Coordinator – Los Angeles Chargers

Jesse Minter inherited a bad Chargers defense, and at the end of his first season, they led the league with the fewest points allowed per game. This year, they continue to perform at a high level.

Minter is from the Harbaugh family defensive coaching tree, looping between Michigan and Baltimore. Minter had multiple defensive assistant positions under John with the Ravens over a four-year span, before becoming the defensive coordinator at Michigan and then following Jim to the Chargers.

If his name sounds familiar, that may be because his father Rick was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats from 1994-2003.

4. Jon Gruden – Former Head Coach – Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I have my apprehensions about Jon Gruden, but there are a number of things working in the Sandusky native’s favor.

He has a wealth of experience as a head coach and a Super Bowl ring to show for it. He also has a great offensive mind, and it would be very fun to watch what he can do with the talent in Cincinnati.

His brother, Jay, was once the offensive coordinator for the Bengals, so Gruden knows what it is like in Cincinnati. His experience and prestige will give him the credibility he needs to push the Brown/Blackburn family to make the changes necessary to make a Super Bowl run.

5. Curt Cignetti – Head Coach – University of Indiana

Curt Cignetti has the Indiana Hoosiers sitting near the top of the rankings yet again this season, despite the huge disparities in NIL money. Far from just defending his team from poachers, Cignetti has been very successful in the transfer portal, though he is not able to lure players away with money. The Hoosiers have been able to target players who other teams have failed to identify as top talents and develop them into highly productive players.

Although the NFL is very different from college football, the Bengals are a team that is often forced to compete on uneven ground. Cignetti’s experience in this area could make this dark horse the right hire.

6. Jeff Hafley – Defensive Coordinator – Green Bay Packers

Jeff Hafley is a rising star and will likely be a hot candidate this offseason. He had seven years of NFL coaching experience before becoming the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Following an impressive, but short run with the Buckeyes, Hafley became the head coach at Boston College.

Hafley had a record of 22-26 in his time at BC, before heading back to the NFL. Now the defensive coordinator for the Packers. In his first season as an NFL coordinator, his unit ranked 3rd in scoring defense and 3rd in yards allowed. This year he continues to impress.

Hafley did not have a great run as a college head coach, but he didn’t have Joe Burrow either. His defenses are always lights out, which this team desperately needs.

7. Steve Spagnuolo – Defensive Coordinator – Kansas City Chiefs

Steve Spagnuolo is arguably the best defensive coordinator in the game. His defenses beat Tom Brady’s Patriots in two Super Bowls. Then Andy Reid brought him to Kansas City, where he did what the Bengals failed to do over the last few seasons. He took young, cheap players and quickly developed them into a competitive defensive unit.

He has been a head coach in the past, and it was unimpressive, but the 65-year-old could have a very different experience with a quarterback like Burrow under center.

8. Vance Joseph – Defensive Coordinator – Denver Broncos

The Bengals identified Vance Joseph as an up-and-coming talent when he was their defensive backs coach. He moved on to a defensive coordinator role, which led to a head coaching job in Denver. That only lasted two years, and in all honesty, I think they cut bait on him too early.

Joseph has been a successful defensive coordinator ever since and continues to impress with his technical and leadership abilities. He deserves another shot at a head coaching position.

9. Joe Brady – Offensive Coordinator – Buffalo Bills

Many of you are probably asking yourself why Joe Brady is this low on the list. Brady’s obvious connection to this job is Joe Burrow. When the two came together at LSU, both of their careers took off, but I don’t know if I see anything on Brady’s resume that projects him to be a great head coach.

Sure, he can call a good offensive game, but it is not like the Bengals have much of an offensive problem.

True, he is Burrow’s boy, but if that is what you are looking for, just keep Zac Taylor.

10. Kliff Kingsbury – Offensive Coordinator – Washington Commanders

Kliff Kingsbury is probably not a good head coach.

I mean, who gets fired from their alma mater, where they are a legend?

He is, however, one heck of an offensive coordinator. If they wanted to lean even harder into building this team around defense, he would be your guy.

It could be a lot of fun. However, if they don’t find the right defensive coordinator, it could be a complete calamity.

Bengals vs. Patriots game time, TV channel, online stream, odds, and predictions

gettyimages-2234181985.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are headed back to Paycor Stadium licking their wounds amid a three-game losing skid. Up next, they’re hosting the top team in the AFC, the New England Patriots.

One of the biggest story lines as we approach is whether quarterback Joe Burrow will suit up for the team after being a full participant for two straight days on Wednesday and Thursday. He left Week 2’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a toe injury that required surgery. The team speculated 12 weeks to recover, but some medical experts said they would be shocked if he returned at all. If he suits up, it certainly changes the tone of things if he isn’t playing at a drastic disadvantage because of the injury. We likely will not know that until we do or do not see him.

We do know that we will not see Ja’Marr Chase on the field as the wide receiver is the first player in NFL history to be suspended for a game with the cause listed as spitting on an opposing player. This happened as the Bengals were trying to claw their way back into the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. He appeared to spit on Jalen Ramsey after the play. Ramsey, of course, was tossed from the game for committing a personal foul with his retaliation.

All of that is to say New England will be an immense challenge even if both Burrow and Chase were on the field 100% healthy. They are 9-2 and haven’t lost since Week 3. This team has been reinvigorated with the installation of head coach Mike Vrabel. Quarterback Drake Maye has also taken a significant step forward in just his second season. He has thrown 20 touchdowns to only five interceptions. He had 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season. Part of that has been Stefon Diggs providing a true WR1 target. However, Maye has not been afraid to spread it around when necessary.

Last week, rookie running back Trayveon Henderson had three touchdowns on Thursday Night Football against the New York Jets. If the Bengals haven’t cleaned up their tackling issues, he could easily repeat or expand on that performance come Sunday.

5 questions on Patriots vs. Bengals with Pats Pulpit

gettyimages-1456261423.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals face a pivotal home game against the team with the best record in the AFC this Sunday. To get the lay of the land on all things New England Patriots, we tapped the knowledge of Taylor Kyles over at Pats Pulpit within the SB Nation network.

Here are five questions with Taylor Kyles to preview this Sunday’s game:
cleardot.gif

1.) AC: Can you talk about the growth of Drake Maye in Year Two? He’s making all of the throws it seems–is there a weakness to exploit?

TK:
Drake Maye’s pocket presence and footwork have significantly improved under OC Josh McDaniels, and he’s done a better job keeping his eyes downfield when extending plays. These have allowed his play-making instincts, arm talent, and athleticism to shine. All that said, Maye’s hunting for big plays has led to some rough turnovers. Disciplined fronts that don’t let him run wild also tend to rack up sacks, so sound rush lanes are key to limiting his explosiveness.

2.) AC: What has been the effect of Mike Vrabel’s return to the Patriots? He obviously knows the culture, but do you think he was the only available head coaching candidate that could have turned the Patriots around this quickly, or were the pieces already there and just needed a steady head coach presence, in general?

TK:
Mike Vrabel’s experience and credibility have been major factors in the Patriots’ quick turnaround, especially in player acquisition and buy-in. He’s made mistakes at other stops, and you can tell he’s brought the lessons he learned — plus several assistants — with him to New England. This was a team lacking in starting-caliber talent and credible coaching at key spots, and Vrabel’s regime did an excellent job filling those voids.

Ben Johnson’s early tenure in Chicago makes it hard for me to say he wouldn’t have been successful in New England, but it never felt like Robert Kraft was truly willing to go in an unfamiliar direction.

3.) AC: What do you think the Patriots’ game plan will be is this week, given the massive amount of injuries/suspensions to Bengals’ stars and Cincinnati’s fluidity at quarterback?

TK:
The Patriots always want to play balanced to maximize their play-action potential, but I also think they’ll want to lean on the run game against a vulnerable front. If McDaniels thinks he can pound the rock, he will, and TreVeyon Henderson has produced like one of the league’s best rushers in recent weeks. The backfield could also be getting a boost with Rhamondre Stevenson set to come back from a toe injury. New England will be respectful of the Bengals’ ball-hawking secondary, but I’d expect them to pick on Cincy’s linebackers in coverage as much as possible.

4.) AC: Give us one player on offense and defense, that aren’t household names with whom Bengals fans should/will become familiar with after this Sunday?

Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte has been an elite deep threat this season, and he’s set to return from a hamstring injury. The Patriots haven’t been able to replace him the past few weeks, and I’d be surprised if Maye doesn’t try getting one of his favorite targets in a groove.

Defensive tackle Cory Durden is primed for a bigger role with Milton Williams currently on injured reserve, and he’s had some dominant flashes this season. Despite being a primary run defender, where he does a great job holding his ground and getting off blocks, PFF has him ranked among the position’s best pass rushers. He isn’t an elite athlete and could see some regression to the mean with more snaps, but his power can be overwhelming at times, and I expect the veteran to make an impact on Sunday.

5.) AC: FanDuel has the Patriots as a touchdown favorite on the road this week. Do you think that’s fair, and what do the Bengals need to do to get an unlikely win against this solid New England Squad?

TK:
I think the Patriots will win by more, to be honest, but it’s a decent spread for an NFL game. For the Bengals to pull off an upset, they must keep a lid on the pass defense while keeping Maye and Henderson hemmed in. The Patriots’ linebackers and safeties can also be exploited in coverage, so exploiting mismatches over the middle is the best bet to expose their defense.

Our thanks to Taylor Kyles of Pats Pulpit. Be sure to catch the other side of the conversation over on their website, too!

Bengals vs. Patriots: 5 matchups to watch

gettyimages-2247128504.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are mired in an ugly three-game losing streak and officially drifting into desperation mode. One more loss could bury their already-slim playoff hopes, and they’re walking straight into the toughest stretch of their schedule.

First up: the 9–2 New England Patriots, led by Drake Maye—currently sitting on Vegas’ short list of MVP candidates.

Can the Bengals start a season-saving run, or will the wheels keep coming off?

Here are the matchups to watch.

Tee Higgins vs. All the Attention

When the Bengals have both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, defenses are forced into a “pick your poison” scenario. But Chase will serve his one-game suspension in Week 12, which means all eyes—and all coverage—shift to Higgins.

Higgins is a bona fide WR1 on most NFL rosters, and he’s carried Cincinnati’s passing game before. If the Bengals are going to score enough points to hang with New England, Higgins will have to put on one of those takeover performances.

Mitch Tinsley vs. Jermaine Burton (for WR2 relevance)

Somebody has to absorb the targets Chase leaves behind. Logic says Mitch Tinsley, who’s actually played snaps this season. But there’s a real chance Jermaine Burton is active for the first time in a long time.

If that happens, Burton may be looking at his one real shot to prove he’s more than a practice-squad placeholder. Whoever steps up here will determine how often Higgins sees double teams—and how functional the offense can be.

Mike Gesicki vs. Patriots Linebackers

With Higgins drawing doubles, Joe Flacco (or Joe Burrow, if ready) needs a consistent second option. Enter Mike Gesicki, returning from injury and more of a big slot than a traditional tight end.

Gesicki wins with separation, body control, and downfield ability. If he’s healthy—and if New England doesn’t commit a safety to him early—he could end up being the Bengals’ most important mismatch of the afternoon.

Bengals Secondary vs. Drake Maye

The Bengals are struggling at every level of the defense. The pass rush has gone missing, and when quarterbacks face little to no pressure, opposing receivers are carving up the secondary.

The Patriots bring real skill talent with Stefon Diggs and Hunter Henry. Cincinnati has allowed the most passing touchdowns in the NFL this season, and if Maye is allowed to stand clean in the pocket, he’ll look to pad his MVP case.

This matchup is simple: either the Bengals blanket New England’s weapons, or this one gets ugly.

Bengals Defensive Front vs. TreVeyon Henderson & Rhamondre Stevenson

Cincinnati doesn’t just give up passing touchdowns—they’ve allowed the fifth-most rushing touchdowns in the league too. TreVeyon Henderson’s breakaway speed plus Rhamondre Stevenson’s returning power is the classic lightning-and-thunder combination.

Nothing helps a young quarterback more than an easy running game and a defense that can’t generate pressure. The Bengals don’t need to dominate both phases, but they have to win one: stop the run or affect the quarterback. If they can’t do at least one of those, Maye and the Patriots will dictate everything.

Zac Taylor stays mum on if Joe Burrow or Joe Flacco plays vs. Ravens

imagn-27425412.jpg

Well, here we are again… Another gut-wrenching loss this week as Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals have dropped eight of the last nine games following a 26-20 loss to the New England Patriots.

The Bengals had a chance to win this one (like many other losses this season) and likely would have if Joe Burrow had made his return today.

Burrow practiced all week and was trending to shock everyone with his return from the toe injury against the Patriots, but the Bengals staff felt he needed a few more days late in the week.

Bengals fans have been confused about the decision, especially if Taylor wants to get back into the division race, because he seemed ready to go, while Joe Flacco continues to struggle through an AC joint sprain in his shoulder.

Had the Bengals stolen today’s game against the Pats, there may have been something to truly play for on Thanksgiving with how open the AFC North currently is.

After the game, Taylor was asked about Burrow’s potential return on Thanksgiving vs. the Baltimore Ravens, and he quickly responded with “I’m not going to declare anything for Thursday yet.”

With the Zac Taylor-led Bengals now sitting at 3-8, the question truly needs to be asked if it is worth it for Burrow to come back this season or simply let Flacco finish things out.

The franchise QB has made it clear he plans to play again this season, no matter what, but it may be time to shut it down and look to rebuild for 2026.

We shall see what happens, but if I had to guess, Burrow will return on Thanksgiving night. But at worst, Burrow looks like a virtual lock to return by the time Cincinnati faces the Buffalo Bills in Week 14.

Twitter reactions to Bengals’ loss to Patriots

gettyimages-2248115782.jpg

Heartbreaking losses have become a common trend that Bengals fans are far too familiar with this season, as Cincinnati drops its 8th loss on the season to the New England Patriots, 26-20.

The Bengals were without Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Trey Hendrickson, and Tee Higgins (on the final drive), but managed to make it incredibly competitive.

Despite no one believing the Bengals could knock off the Patriots, this team had a chance to win the game in the final minutes.

Joe Flacco was without all his first-team weapons but came up just short after the officials swallowed their whistles on back-to-back plays with quite a bit of contact on the Bengals receivers.

We can be upset, but the reality is that the Bengals are now 3-8 on the season and have dropped eight of their last nine since starting 2-0.

The team will now head to Baltimore for a Thanksgiving night matchup with the Ravens, and the attention now shifts to Joe Burrow and his potential return.

If the Bengals had Joe Burrow today, facing the team that now has the top seed in the AFC, they probably win comfortably even without Ja'Marr Chase.

That’s another example of the missed opportunity of the last 10 weeks.

Burrow could return on Thursday, but the Bengals are 3-8.…

Too bad there are no moral victories in the NFL

Defense did well today, too many punts in go situations, offense sputtered for way too long

And at 3-8 there's not much left for Burrow to play for. If they win out, there's a sliver of hope, but that's it.

#Bengals RB Chase Brown finished with 130 yards from scrimmage: 107 yards rushing, 23 yards receiving. That's his third-highest in his career.

It's also his fifth-straight game with 100+ yards from scrimmage:

Bengals snap count takeaways vs. Patriots

gettyimages-2228388278.jpg

We’ve witnessed some strange and unfortunate career arcs take place this season.

Cam Taylor-Britt got benched, then was inactive despite being healthy, then back in the lineup. Just when it looked like he might be able to make a comeback, bam! Season-ending injury.

Jermaine Burton has become a glorified practice squad player, inactive for every single game.

Then there is his fellow 2024 third-round pick, McKinnley Jackson.

Jackson was inactive for much of the season as well and played a mere six snaps before the bye week. Even when the Bengals allowed Mike Pennel to move on, it was Jordan Jefferson, not Jackson, who got the next nod. Jackson even went as far as requesting a trade.

Then Jackson played 16 snaps in the first game after the bye week, and this week that number went up to 19. He’s actually looked pretty good. With Jackson back in the coaches’ good graces, maybe, just maybe, the 3rd round of the 2024 NFL Draft will not turn out to be a total wash for the Bengals.

With the aforementioned injury to Taylor-Britt came a shake-up in the secondary. The forgotten son, Jalen Davis, was called up from the practice squad, playing 42 snaps while his fellow slot cornerback, Josh Newton, saw his snap count plummet to 5.

Offensively, the return of Mike Gesicki was marked with 28 reps, pushing Noah Fant down to 18. Of course, Drew Sample remains tight end one, taking 34 snaps. Tanner Hudson also played a respectable 14 snaps.

The wide receiver position faced much turmoil this week. Ja’Marr Chase was suspended, and Tee Higgins got knocked out late. As a result, Andrei Iosivas led the unit in snaps with 54, followed by Higgins with 50 and Mitchell Tinsley with 48. Charlie Jones even saw some rare offensive action, taking 11 snaps.

Tuesday Trenches: Do you still believe? Happy Thanksgiving

gettyimages-2248087116.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals needed to beat the 9-2 Patriots on Sunday to keep even the faintest pulse in their playoff hopes. They didn’t. Now sitting at 3-8, the best they can finish is 9-8—and that number didn’t get them into the postseason last year.

But Cincinnati is getting Joe Burrow back for Week 13—on Thanksgiving night, no less, in the Bengals’ first-ever game on the holiday. And if he had played against New England, who knows what might’ve happened? If Burrow and the Bengals somehow rip off a six-game win streak, and if a handful of other things fall perfectly into place, it’s technically possible they sneak into late January football.

A lot would need to go right. Almost nothing could go wrong.

So I’ll ask you: do you really believe the Bengals can pull that off?

I don’t.

Nothing about this team—Burrow or no Burrow—screams, “We’re about to beat the Ravens twice, the Bills, Cardinals, Dolphins, and Browns with zero slip-ups.” Honestly? Even with No. 9 under center, I’d expect something like 3-3 down the stretch.

The Bengals had one of the best offenses in the league in 2024, and their defense was a total disaster. It cost them dearly. And instead of fixing it, the front office played contract chicken with their only productive pass rusher, spent a first-round pick on someone who can’t actually play football, and assumed Geno Stone and Jordan Battle would magically level up under Al Golden.

That entire rant boils down to one sentence: the Bengals didn’t do anything to make their 2024 dumpster-fire defense any less dumstery or fire-ey.

So what reason do I have to believe?

Magic isn’t real, and if you think it is, then you also have to accept that the city of Cincinnati is obviously cursed. The Bengals have a 1% chance to make the playoffs. That means a 99% chance they won’t. To me, that might as well be 1000%.

This isn’t about whether Burrow should play—he’s playing. That ship has sailed. The question is whether it even matters.

I say it doesn’t, because I don’t believe in the Bengals.

Do you? And if so… why?

I think I’m one of the few people who genuinely looks forward to Thanksgiving more than Christmas. I love this season—fall is easily my favorite—but Thanksgiving hits different. The food, the family, the football. And this year, I get all of that and the Bengals.

If I had to rank my top five Thanksgiving dishes, here’s my list:

  1. My mom’s stuffing
  2. Pecan pie
  3. Spiral ham
  4. Sweet potato casserole
  5. My wife’s mac and cheese

These are foods I only get once a year (well, except the ham), and I get to eat them with my favorite people while watching my favorite sport. This year, I also get to watch my favorite team. I’m not entirely sure if I’m excited about that, but for now I’ll say I am.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving dishes? And are you excited to watch the Bengals Thursday night—or are you planning to protect your peace?

No matter how or where you celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful, safe Thanksgiving.

Random Week 12 Thoughts

  • DJ Turner’s dominance continues. Targeted once, allowed one catch. That’s it. Quarterbacks aren’t even looking his way anymore, which is wild considering how nonexistent the pass rush is.
  • Did I say nonexistent? Okay, maybe “slightly less nonexistent.” Myles Murphy, now with more snaps, is quietly impressing me. He’s not finishing plays consistently, but he’s living in the backfield. Still not sure he was worth the No. 28 pick in 2023.
  • McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins each got some push in the middle, which was good to see.
  • Still, the only sack came from cornerback Jalen Davis.
  • Drake Maye looked off. Some of his throws looked like he was aiming for the turf. It happens.
  • Tight ends continue to eat. Sunday was a flashback to every Marvin Lewis defense that could never figure out how to cover a tight end. It made me miss Trey Flowers.
  • Money Mac from 63. And it looked like it might’ve been good from 65.
  • Joe Flacco has been fun this year, but every QB has throws they’d like back. I saw that pick-six coming a full second before the ball left his hand.
  • Mitchell Tinsley is one of my favorite stories of 2025. Another touchdown, another circus sideline catch on fourth down. When the ball’s in the air, he refuses to be denied.
  • Jermaine Burton… buddy. If you can’t crack the active lineup when Chase or Higgins is out, why are you here? At this point he’s wasting a roster spot—and some cash.

You hurt and abuse, tellin’ all of your lies
Run ‘round, sweet baby, Lord, how they hypnotize
Sweet little baty, I don’t know you been
Gonna love you, baby, here I come again

Bengals will be road dogs for Thanksgiving game vs. Ravens

gettyimages-2248087116.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens will be meeting for the first time this season on Thanksgiving night. It will be the first of their two meetings in three games. This one is, of course, in Baltimore as most Thursday night games these teams have played over the years.

The Bengals are currently 7.5-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The odd makers are expecting some fireworks, as well. The over/under is set at 52.5 points.

There is a lot of uncertainty still surrounding quarterback Joe Burrow’s availability for the game. He has recovered remarkably quickly from the surgery on his toe, and it appeared he had a real chance of playing against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Even if he does play, you do have to wonder just how healthy he will be, and if any sort of restriction might be too much to keep this offense from finding its rhythm again quite yet.

The good news is they get Ja’Marr Chase back after serving his one-game suspension. The bad news is Tee Higgins will likely be out with a concussion he suffered late in the game against the Patriots.

As far as the Ravens’ side of things. This season has been far from a walk in the park. They have crawled out of the gutter of the AFC North after a 1-5 start to win five straight games. Quarterback Lamar Jackson missed three games. He has looked as solid as ever when healthy. He still has games where he seems to disappear like this past Sunday against the New York Jets, but he usually shows up against Cincinnati.

The games between these teams always seem to come down to the wire, so we will see how this one plays out.

Bengals vs. Ravens Injury Report: Lamar Jackson returns, Tee Higgins out

The faint playoff hopes for the Cincinnati Bengals will either live another week or come crashing down on Thursday night. Another prime time road matchup with the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving night will give us the return of Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, who is back after serving a one-game suspension.

According to the team’s injury report, Burrow (toe) was a full participant, and when speaking to the media, Burrow confirmed that he will start on Thanksgiving Night.

Joe Flacco (finger) was also a full participant, but we hope that if we see Flacco on the field, it is because the Bengals are coasting to a win and sat Burrow down.

Tee Higgins (concussion) will not play, per Zac Taylor. When Higgins was carted off and quickly ruled out with a concussion, it was almost a given that he wouldn’t clear concussion protocol in time.

Trey Hendrickson (hip/pelvis) will also be out, per Taylor.

Running back Samaje Perine (ankle) was back as a full participant and could be in line to return and back up Chase Brown.

For the Ravens, Lamar Jackson (toe) was a full participant and should be good to go Thursday night, while Kyle Hamilton (ankle) was limited. On the whole, Baltimore looks to be relatively healthy heading in to the matchup.

One other note: The Bengals added Sean Clifford to the practice squad following his release. Burrow is set to take Clifford’s spot on the 53-man roster.
