Bengals decline Cowboys’ trade offers for Trey Hendrickson

imagn-27084223.jpg

At 3-4, the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals believe they can make some noise in a weaker AFC this year. That’s why they are insistent that they aren’t sellers at the looming trade deadline—at least not in terms of trading Trey Hendrickson, per reports.

FOX Sports insider Jay Glazer reported this morning that the Dallas Cowboys came calling about Hendrickson, but the Bengals weren’t interested in making a deal. Dallas also inquired about the 2-5 Las Vegas Raiders about Maxx Crosby, who similarly eschewed those discussions.

Hendrickson has become one of the most feared pass-rushers in the NFL since joining the Bengals back in 2021. He has amassed 61 sacks in that time (including four already this season), 163 quarterback hits, and has been nominated to the Pro Bowl every year since coming to Cincinnati via free agency.

Unfortunately, the past couple of offseasons for Hendrickson have been frustrating, as he has tried to get the Bengals to pony up a multi-year deal. Cincinnati did give him a pay raise for 2025, but his future beyond this season is cloudy.

It’s in this lack of a long-term deal that makes other teams come sniffing around for an opportunity to swing a trade for him. The Bengals appear to once again be sticking to their guns on a player which they’ve made a stance.

Dallas is in the market for defensive help after it dealt Micah Parsons to the Packers shortly before the season commenced. It’s in that haul that the Cowboys think they can get an impact player and keep their own wobbly playoff hopes alive at 3-3-1.

It’s not believed the Bengals are willing to trade Hendrickson, but these next two games before Cincinnati’s bye against the Jets and Bears, respectively, could further shape the team’s stance on being buyers or sellers with the looming deadline.

The #Cowboys made trade calls to the #Raiders on Maxx Crosby and the #Bengals on Trey Hendrickson, but were rebuffed by both teams, per @JayGlazer.

Tee Higgins ties Bengals record touchdown streak

gettyimages-2243443825.jpg

When Joe Flacco hit wide receiver Tee Higgins in stride on his way to a 44-yard touchdown in the second quarter against the Jets on Sunday, not only did he extend his lead in the NFL for consecutive games with a receiving touchdown, but he tied a long-held franchise record.

On Thursday Night Football in Week 7, when Higgins scored against the Steelers, Jay Morrison wrote he extended his scoring lead over the NFL, but that he was just one touchdown short of tying two Bengals legends for consecutive home games with scores.

First is Bengals’ running back Pete Johnson, who scored in eight consecutive home games across the 1982 and 1983 seasons. He was joined by Carl Pickens, who did the same thing across the ‘94 and ‘95 seasons.

Higgins, along with Ja’Marr Chase and the rest of the Bengals’ offense, has enjoyed an offensive explosion over the last couple of weeks with Joe Flacco under center compared to where they were with Jake Browning. Now against the Bears in Week 9, Higgins could set a new franchise record if he’s able to get into the end zone.

Bengals’ Shaka Heyward set to miss 4 weeks due to fibula injury

gettyimages-1599245353.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals got more bad news on the injury front Monday, when it was reported that linebacker and special teams standout Shaka Heyward will be out four weeks with a fibula injury.

Per Ian Rapoport, Heyward suffered a hairline fracture in Sunday’s loss, and now the Bengals are down a two-year starter on Darrin Simmons’ special teams unit.

The fracture should land Heyward on injured reserve for the four weeks he expected to miss, meaning Joe Giles-Harris may be elevated from the practice squad. Giles-Harris was called up for the Week 8 loss to the New York Jets and played special teams.

With Heyward headed to IR and linebacker Logan Wilson requesting a trade out of Cincinnati, the Bengals could be forced to look in to bringing in a linebacker from outside the building, should they get an offer for Wilson that they wanted to accept.

The Bengals take on the Chicago Bears in Week 9 before their bye week.

These are still the same old Bengals: How a championship contender fell apart since Super Bowl appearance

imagn-17982135.jpg

If you thought things felt different for the Bengals during January of 2022, you wouldn’t have been wrong. That month started with the Bengals clinching the AFC North with a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, who, at the time, were the two-time reigning AFC Champions and had won eight straight games coming into that first Sunday of 2022 at Paul Brown Stadium.

Two weeks later, the Bengals broke a 31-year drought without a playoff victory by beating the Las Vegas Raiders on a memorable and cathartic interception by Germaine Pratt. One week later, the Bengals overcame the Tennessee Titans, sacking Joe Burrow nine times, and won their first road playoff game in franchise history on a 52-yard field goal by rookie kicker Evan McPherson.

Then, in the AFC Championship at Kansas City —one of the most memorable days in Bengals’ history —after giving up a touchdown on their first three drives, the Bengals’ defense held Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and the vaunted Chiefs’ offense the rest of the way. Joe Burrow brought the Bengals back from a 21-3 deficit, tied for the largest comeback in Conference Championship history, and led a go-ahead fourth quarter and game-winning overtime drive to take the Bengals to the Super Bowl.

Bengals fans, myself included, were riding an all-time Who Dey high. The best part was that it felt like the beginning of something huge, sustained, and a long run of success for this Bengals franchise. With Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Joe Mixon, Tyler Boyd, Trey Hendrickson, Logan Wilson, and Jessie Bates, it felt like the Bengals were going to be a Super Bowl contender for a long time.

Trailing 13-10 to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI, with 2:10 to play in the first half, Bengals’ safety Jessie Bates III intercepted Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford in the end zone. Another big play by the Bengals’ defense, two minutes left in the first half, the Bengals’ high-flying offense coming back onto the field to potentially go tie the game or take the lead… and Vernon Hargreaves.

Remember him? The guy who ran onto the field in flip-flops, celebrating Bates’s interception? Instead of starting at their own 20-yard line, the Bengals had to start their ensuing drive at their own 10-yard line. Just when it looked like the momentum of the Super Bowl was about to completely flip to the Bengals, something as stupid as any stupid Vontaze Burfict penalty or bad snap by Brad St. Louis happened.

That stupid play aside, Burrow did hit Tee Higgins for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half to give the Bengals a 17-13 lead. On their first defensive snap on the Rams’ ensuing drive, Chidobe Awuzie intercepted Matthew Stafford to give the Bengals the ball at the Rams’ 31-yard line. Great teams would have gone for the knockout blow right there. The Bengals got a field goal on that drive to go up 20-13… and leave the door open.

Fast forward to 6:13 left in the fourth quarter, with the Rams starting their drive with the ball on their own 21-yard line. Four times, the Rams faced either a third or fourth down, and the Bengals’ defense couldn’t get off the field.

Debates can be had if Logan Wilson actually held Cooper Kupp with 1:47 remaining, but the Bengals had three prior opportunities to get a stop and give the ball back to Joe Burrow and the offense to go win the Lombardi Trophy.

Burrow and the offense did get the ball back with 1:25 remaining, now trailing 23-20. The first two plays were a 17-yard reception by Ja’Marr Chase and a nine-yard reception by Tyler Boyd. 2nd&1 at the Rams 49-yard line.

Fifty-two seconds remaining. One yard. Three plays to get it. Obviously, we all know how those three plays unfolded.

If Joe Burrow had one more second on the Bengals’ final offensive play of the season.

If the Bengals could have gotten one yard.

One yard. Remember that.

The momentum the organization had from that magical 2021 season continued into the offseason with a massive free agency spending on the offensive line. After giving up seven sacks in Super Bowl LVI, Mike Brown, Duke Tobin, and the front office were aggressive in fixing the one area they thought cost them a Lombardi Trophy. Coming off that magical 2021 season, Joe Burrow was one of the most popular players in the NFL. The excitement amongst the fanbase was at an all-time high, naming rights for The Jungle were sold to Paycor… and the front office couldn’t reach an extension with Jessie Bates.

When the schedule for the 2022 season was released, with the Bengals opening at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers, most Bengals fans, especially after beating them by a combined score of 65-20 in two games against them in 2021, thought they would crush the Steelers again in Week 1. Times were different. Ben Roethlisberger had retired in January, and the Bengals are so much more talented than the Steelers. For sure, the Bengals would start the season 1-0 with a big win over the Steelers.

Remember, though, one yard.

In that game, with the Bengals trailing 20-14 late in the fourth quarter, they had 1st&Goal at the one-yard line. All that money spent to protect Joe Burrow, who was sacked seven times in this game, and the Bengals couldn’t get one yard in four plays. Turnover on downs. The Bengals would lose 23-20 in overtime, just like they did in Super Bowl LVI. Same score. Burrow was sacked seven times, just as he was in Super Bowl LVI.

Were things really different for the Bengals?

Fast forward to the AFC Championship in Kansas City that season, with the Bengals riding a 10-game winning streak and cornerback Mike Hilton calling Arrowhead Stadium “Burrowhead,” and Joseph Ossai’s ill-advised, untimely penalty where he pushed Patrick Mahomes when Mahomes was already out of bounds.

Harrison Butker nailed a 45-yard field goal to send the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. Final score, wait for it… 23-20.

I had someone mention to me at work the next day that what Joseph Ossai did was on the level of Vontaze Burfict. I didn’t believe it. These Bengals were different, even after losing the AFC Championship. Maybe, though, they weren’t. Again, Vernon Hargreaves happened in the Super Bowl.

The following offseason, Jessie Bates walked in free agency. Vonn Bell walked in free agency.

Alright, well, the Bengals will just replace those guys through the draft and some other free agent signings.

How about this? When you have a great player, regardless of position, he needs to be paid. Bates was not only a great player, but he was also a great leader. Keep that in mind. Leader.

The 2023 Season is a weird one, looking back on it. It felt weird through the first four weeks with Joe Burrow working through a calf injury and the offense struggling to find a consistent rhythm, especially after the Bengals lost to the Tennessee Titans 27-3 in Week 4. That hadn’t happened in the previous two seasons, losing to a team the Bengals should have beaten handily.

With the Bengals rebounding and riding a four-game winning streak into Week 10 against the Houston Texans, the Bengals trailed 27-24 late in the fourth quarter. After Tyler Boyd hauled in a 64-yard catch-and-run to give the Bengals 1st&Goal at the six-yard line, it felt like the Bengals were going to win a game they had no business winning, considering the Texans had 544 total yards of offense.

Then, on 3rd&Goal from the 12-yard line, Tyler Boyd dropped a wide-open touchdown pass. In 2021 and 2022, that play would have been made. The Bengals could only tie the game, and then their defense, minus Jessie Bates, couldn’t get a stop to force overtime and lost 30-27 on a time-expiring game-winning field goal. That loss felt odd. Losing to a middling AFC team.

Middling. Mediocre. Keep those words in mind.

Four nights later, Joe Burrow’s right wrist popped while throwing a touchdown pass in Baltimore. With Tee Higgins missing that game and the game against Houston, the Sunday Night Football game against Buffalo on November 5th that season was the last time Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, and Joe Mixon shared the same field together as an offense. Mixon and Boyd would leave after the 2023 season.

Even though Jake Browning kept the team afloat and had them at 8-6 going into a Week 16 Saturday afternoon, nationally televised showdown at Pittsburgh, let’s go back to “one yard.”

In the game against Pittsburgh, the Bengals trailed 21-0 largely because of two Jake Browning interceptions and the Steelers’ offense scoring on big offensive plays. But still, the Bengals had a chance to make things interesting with 4:31 remaining in the second quarter and a 1st&Goal at the 10-yard line.

Browning connected with Trenton Irwin for nine yards to bring up 2nd&Goal at the one-yard line. Three plays to get a touchdown. All of them resulted in no gain. One yard. Couldn’t get it. Ghosts of Super Bowl LVI revisited in Pittsburgh. The Bengals would lose that game 34-11 and then were eliminated from playoff contention with a 25-17 loss at the Chiefs the next week.

Let’s go back to the word “leader.” That offseason, they let defensive tackle and run-stopper extraordinaire D.J. Reader walk in free agency. Again, Reader wasn’t just a great player. He was a great leader on the Bengals’ defensive line and run defense.

But for sure, the Bengals would replace him in the Draft, right?

Here’s the deal: Dax Hill, Cam Taylor-Britt, Myles Murphy, Kris Jenkins Jr., McKinnley Jackson, Shemar Stewart, and Demetrius Knight Jr., all draft picks within the first three rounds of the Draft, are not leaders. Watching them play over the last three seasons, it looks like they are players who came in, knowing the Bengals had just went to the Super Bowl and the AFC Championship, and just thought they could go through the motions and they would still do just enough while the offense of Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins carries the team to the Playoffs and back to the Super Bowl.

Bates, Reader, Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, Logan Wilson, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Mike Hilton, and Chidobe Awuzie were all leaders, largely because they saw this defense, this team, and this organization at a crossroads. They built that defense in 2021 and 2022.

Only Hendrickson and Wilson remain. Hendrickson is dealing with a hip injury, and Wilson has requested a trade. Lack of leadership, combined with missed draft picks on defense, and the last three years now don’t all feel that shocking.

When Burrow missed the final seven games of the 2023 season, Zac Taylor still got a lot of praise and credit for keeping the team afloat. It was a testament to the strong culture he had created through his first two seasons that it withstood a lot of losing. That stuff does matter.

But the cracks in the foundation started to show in the lead-up to the 2024 season. Taylor used to not play the Bengals’ starters much in the preseason. Joe Burrow spoke on the Prime Video broadcast of the Bengals’ third preseason game that he wished he had played more in the preseason.

That, combined with the saga that was contract negotiations with Ja’Marr Chase, created a disjointed team going into the season-opener against the New England Patriots. The cracks in the foundation within the team and organization were beginning to show. The Bengals lost that game 16-10, with the big momentum-changing play in that game being Tanner Hudson, while going in for a game-tying touchdown midway through the second quarter, fumbling the ball at the, wait for it… one-yard line.

Forget that the Bengals put up a valiant effort at Kansas City the following week, except on 4th&16, and fell just short 26-25. Forget the positive momentum —at least it felt like —that effort created.

The following week, on Monday Night Football against the Washington Commanders, the Bengals’ defense didn’t get a single stop in a 38-33 loss. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase were terrific that night. It didn’t matter. Again, a lack of leadership on defense. That game against Washington could have been chalked up as a fluke. It was only a sign of things to come that season.

The fact that the Bengals front office viewed the 2024 season, particularly the failures on defense, as bad luck and did minimal effort to build a better defense this offseason is grounds for Bengals fans to feel betrayed. They thought that, by signing Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to massive long-term extensions, they, along with Joe Burrow, would re-create their prolific 2024 seasons again this season. One problem, though, is that they didn’t do enough to protect Joe Burrow this offseason. Burrow’s 2025 season was derailed less than six quarters into it.

Remember that word leader? The Bengals’ offense, even without Joe Burrow, still has leaders on it. Ja’Marr Chase: Leader. Tee Higgins: Leader. Ted Karras and Orlando Brown Jr., both Super Bowl champions before coming to the Bengals: Leaders.

Since the Bengals traded for Joe Flacco, the offense has been great. Leaders are a result of that.

The Bengals’ defense has no leaders.

From an all-time Who Dey high in the Winter of 2022 to where the Bengals are on October 27, 2025. The Bengals are now 3-5, coming off a 39-38 loss to the New York Jets. The Jets were 0-7 coming into Sunday’s game, their owner had ripped his starting quarterback in front of the media to the point where that quarterback, Justin Fields, was crying in a closet when he wasn’t on the field, their top two wide receivers were out, and their top cornerback was out for the game on Sunday.

Offensively, the Jets gained 502 yards, 254 on the ground, and Justin Fields passed for 244 yards through the air. The other four passing yards came on a game-winning touchdown pass by running back Breece Hall. Defensively, the Jets allowed just two targets to Tee Higgins.

Despite those 2021 and 2022 seasons, the Bengals don’t appear to be different. Take away that 10-game winning streak in 2022- the Bengals were 4-4 prior to it- and this organization has been mediocre at best since Super Bowl LVI. They have been mediocre, at best, despite having a premier quarterback in Joe Burrow. He’s had two of his last three seasons derailed by injury since signing a massive, five-year, $275 million contract extension two days before the 2023 season-opener.

The Bengals’ front office doesn’t know what to do. Yes, they went to the Super Bowl just four seasons ago. I’ll echo words that my boss and mentor here at CLNS, Mike Petraglia, told me a couple of days ago, that the Bengals “ran into a Super Bowl” four seasons ago.

It wasn’t a result of the organization. It was a result of the greatness of Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow overcame nine sacks in the Divisional round at Tennessee. Joe Burrow overcame an 18-point deficit in the AFC Championship, scrambling for two first downs on a go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter. Joe Burrow came within one second of overcoming an overmatched offensive line to bring a Lombardi Trophy to Cincinnati.

That season felt like the start of unprecedented success for the Bengals. But the problem is the Bengals front office hasn’t known, and still doesn’t know, what to do to sustain that magic and sustain success even with a premier quarterback. That, combined with a departure and, now, lack of leadership on defense, is why the Bengals are in this situation today.

The curtain has been peeled back on why these Bengals may just be the “same old Bengals.” There are few, if any, Bengals fans who have faith in this front office to get the Bengals back to Super Bowl contention. With Joe Burrow, they shouldn’t be feeling this way. It should be different, but it’s not.

Jon Gruden was “pissed” by “disgusting” play of Bengals defense vs. Jets

imagn-11855767.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals had an utter collapse against a hapless New York Jets team in the fourth quarter.

And some of the biggest names in football have shared their opinions on the disaster last Sunday.

Former Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden, an Ohio native, had this to say about the Bengals’ defense most recent performance:

“This defense has not developed… They just fired Lou Anarumo, the defensive coordinator. Guess where he is right now calling them up. He’s with the 7-1 Colts… The Bengals defense, that was disgusting… I’m from Ohio, and these Bengals pissed me off yesterday.”

Watch the clip below.

Gruden also referenced an offensive line that gets Joe Burrow hurt regularly and a front office that “[hasn’t] given an offensive lineman a second contract since Clint Boling”.

It was quite the rant and well deserved.

We’ll have to see how the defense responds next week against the Chicago Bears. In the meantime, here’s a little clip about the Jets game.

Why the Cincinnati Bengals should clean house after Jets loss

imagn-20649328.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are coming off the worst loss in recent memory after allowing the winless New York Jets to come to town and leave with their first win of the season.

The Bengals offense posted 38 points, which should be more than enough, but football is a team sport, and the Bengals defense gave up a Jets season-best 39 points.

Cincinnati has lost dozens of games it shouldn’t have over the past decade, but this loss simply feels different in many ways.

The Bengals’ defense allowed Justin Fields and the Jets offense to post over 500 total yards of offense, by far the most of the season for that unit, and it is not even close.

Fields had just been benched for Tyrod Taylor less than a week before Sunday and dragged by the owner of the New York Jets in the media, and yet here we are.

The Zac Taylor-led Bengals have become the ‘get-right’ game for struggling teams, and it is costing the franchise valuable years in the Joe Burrow era.

As much as this defense has struggled, this game really showed me how behind and concerning this unit truly is.

This loss in particular truly showed all the die-hard Bengals fans how much this franchise has failed, from top to bottom, in building a team around Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins.

There should be some serious accountability taken by Duke Tobin, Zac Taylor, and many more, yet Taylor says the issue is that there is no one stepping up on the defense to make big plays and lead the unit.

This is a unit that is unable to tackle or even simply attempt the right angles for a tackle in general.

Unfortunately, outside of Trey Hendrickson, there truly isn’t anyone on this roster who is good enough to make those plays, and that showed on Sunday.

The Bengals have given no long-term security to the best player on this defense in Hendrickson, and one of the captains, Logan Wilson, has been benched for a rookie and has requested a trade.

Again, this is a systematic failure by the entire franchise.

“General Manager” Duke Tobin has held his position for over 20 years and is unable to properly draft, which is job number one.

For example, in the Burrow era, the Bengals have spent two first round picks in the past three years on defensive ends Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart.

The Jets have one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL and have been unable to keep Fields protected all season, until Sunday.

The Bengals defensive line was charted with a combined 0 pressures and 1 win in the first half against the Jets on 68 combined opportunities, per PFF’s initial charting.

Justin Fields had been pressured 26 times and sacked on 12 of them in his previous 2 starts.

— Gridiron Grading (@GridironGrading) October 26, 2025

Both Murphy and Stewart combined for ZERO pressures and made no plays in all four quarters combined.

Shemar Stewart runs in the opposite direction at least once per game. pic.twitter.com/RE8yxHyxNq

— Goodberry (@JoeGoodberry) October 27, 2025

Tobin and his staff have made it clear they do not know how to draft productive talent, and it is becoming more obvious than ever before.

It is easy to select guys like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, but outside of that, it has been nearly a disaster since 2020.

With how poorly this front office has drafted, the franchise is now behind the 8-ball and will need to dig out of a potentially crippling hole before Burrow exits his prime.

The frustrations don’t stop with drafting issues; there is also a potentially even bigger problem with free agency.

The Bengals somehow hit on Jessie Bates in the draft years ago and actually were able to select an All-Pro caliber talent at the free safety position.

Instead of keeping their drafted homegrown talent in Cincinnati, they let him walk because he was ‘asking for too much’ and has been unable to keep the safety position above water since with guys like Nick Scott, Vonn Bell, Geno Stone, and Jordan Battle.

The Bengals also successfully found a gem in free agency back in 2020, and his name is DJ Reader.

Reader was one of the anchors to the defense that helped turn this franchise around with his run-stuffing ability and pressure he generated up the middle.

The front office felt he was not worth another extension a few years ago and let him walk as well. Immediately after walking, he was signed by the Detroit Lions (a team serious about winning), and he has not missed a step since his season-ending injury in Cincinnati a few years ago.

The pattern repeats itself for the Bengals front office, and the team has now been unable to fill that Reader void with guys like Sheldon Rankins, TJ Slaton, Kris Jenkins, McKinnley Jackson, and even Mike Pennel.

From drafting guys like Murphy and Stewart, as well as letting guys like Bates and Reader leave, it is clear the Bengals have completely failed in so many different ways, and that is why we find ourselves here now.

With all that being said, this coaching staff is just as bad as the front office staff.

Taylor has shown year in and year out that he is unable to out-coach anyone in the NFL and can’t win consistently without a healthy Joe Burrow.

Injuries happen in this league, and it is up to the coaching staff to pivot and find ways to adapt… Something Taylor has not done.

Allowing an 0-7 team to come into your stadium and beat you should be enough for a major shake-up with the Bengals staff and even clean house from the GM down, but this is the only franchise that will not do that.

With the drafting issue, coaching issue, and playing issues, the Bengals now find themselves in a potential rebuild AFTER managing to get Burrow, Chase, and Higgins signed to long-term deals.

We are potentially looking at three straight years without a playoff appearance during Burrow’s time in Cincinnati, and words can’t even describe how utterly inexcusable that is for a franchise.

Unacceptable. Something needs to change.

Recapping the Bengals’ offensive performance against the Jets via All-22 film

imagn-27426104.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals had a nightmare performance defensively against the New York Jets. However, that tape will be discussed in a different article. For now, let’s take a look at some of the offensive plays from the game on Sunday.

Ja’Marr Chase put up another 12 catches for 91 yards. Tee Higgins added a 44-yard touchdown. The real highlight of the day offensively, though, was the running game.

Chase Brown had a couple of nice runs on the Bengals’ opening drive. Those runs help set up the first three points of the day for Cincinnati.

Flacco scored the Bengals’ first touchdown of the game on that second series. It was set up by a tough run by Samaje Perine. The Bengals went up 10-0 early after the score.

After the Jets cut the lead to 17-3 later in the game, Chase Brown was able to make a couple of huge plays to get the Bengals back in the end zone. He helped avoid disaster with the first one, on a broken flea-flicker play. Then, he was able to get open over the middle and fight his way in for the score after the reception.

Even Joe Flacco was able to get in on the Bengals’ rushing performance. The Bengals finished the game with 181 total rushing yards, 13 of those coming on this scamper from Joey Jets.

The defense started to struggle more and more in the second half. Before a complete meltdown, the offense was able to get the lead back up to 31-16 with a couple of good runs by Samaje Perine. Dylan Fairchild had a couple of terrific blocks to open those lanes.

Perine finished the game with 9 carries, 94 yards, and a touchdown. Brown had 12 carries, 73 yards, and a rushing touchdown. He also put up 3 receptions for 32 yards and a score. What should have been a game to celebrate two great rushing performances turned into one of the worst losses in franchise history.

The Bengals were unable to score again on their last two possessions. The Jets ultimately came back to win the game 39-38 and drop Cincinnati to 3-5 on the season. The last play of the game was the third ball that hit Andrei Iosivas in the hands on the day. He ended with zero receptions on those three passes.

Bengals News (10/30): Shemar Stewart growing pains

gettyimages-2242100593.jpg

Shemar Stewart remains in ‘infant stage’ as Bengals defense collapses
Cincinnati’s first-round selection this year missed the offseason program during that high-profile contract dispute, then hurt his ankle early in the season and is only just getting back in the swing of things.

Quick Hits | Inventive Chase Brown And The Rolling Bengals Run Game
On first-and-10 at his own 48 with about four minutes left in the first half, Brown showed a shrewd brew of invention and instinct. Head coach Zac Taylor called a flea flicker, and when Brown looked back in the middle of the line of scrimmage to lateral it back to quarterback Joe Flacco, he saw Flacco about to get drilled.

Quick Hits | Joe Flacco “50-50,” For Bears, Trey Hendrickson Also Questionable
“He wasn’t here in the offseason. He wasn’t invested in our training camp,” Taylor said. “It would be easy to make a decision that there’s no way I’m playing. I’ve got an AC joint, we’ve got a bye week next week, so let’s just let this thing heal up. That has not been the communication he’s given to me at all.

Why Bengals Believe Things Can Be Different if They Have to Go Back to Browning Due to Flacco Injury
Flacco’s injury could force the Bengals to go back to Jake Browning — whose three-game stint as the starter after Joe Burrow went down with a turf toe injury went so horribly bad that the team had to ask the Cleveland Browns to fling them a life preserver in the form of Flacco — Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Bengals at NFL trade deadline: Don’t expect Cincinnati to deal Trey Hendrickson
No matter how many lists of trade candidates he ends up on, speculative stories about best fits where he lands as the primary photo or shouting shows where they scream about how the 49ers must go get an edge rusher, the reality of the situation will not change.

Bengals News (10/31): McKinnley Jackson and Logan Wilson Trade Watch

gettyimages-2189304894.jpg

Sources: Jackson third Bengals player to request to be moved
Jackson’s trade request continues a recent trend. Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson has requested a trade, which was first reported by ESPN on Oct. 23. This week, the team and defensive tackle Mike Pennel reached a noninjury settlement that led to his release. He was promptly signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cincinnati Bengals Add Multiple Players To Practice Squad Ahead of Bears Matchup
The Bengals signed LB Joe Giles-Harris off the practice squad to the active roster, along with rookie linebacker Liam Anderson, and fourth-year linebacker Brian Asamoah. They released Myles Cole from the practice squad.

Quick Hits | Inventive Chase Brown And The Rolling Bengals Run Game
“Invent a new run scheme. Man, what would you call that?” Brown wondered after Wednesday’s practice. “Fake Toss Toss? Fake Tossback? Fake Tossback Duo?”

Cincinnati Bengals Will Try to End Unique, League-Wide Losing Streak That is Unbelievably Long
If you take that game out of the mix, the run of futility extends back to November of last year and has the team coming off a one-point losing 15 in a row the following week.

Logan Wilson Deemed Good Trade Fit With NFC Team
CINCINNATI — Logan Wilson wants out of Cincinnati before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, and an NFC fit could make sense. The linebacker is injured right now, possibly making things even harder to work in a deal outside of his contract, but NFL.com thinks a fresh start in Dallas should happen.

Quick Hits | Joe Flacco Practices Limited And Ja’Marr Chase Approves As Bears Loom
Chase says they’re preparing for both Flacco and Jake Browning to play, yet he didn’t see the ball coming out any differently from Flacco than it has during this 100.1 passer rating skein in three Flacco starts with the Bengals. Like Taylor, Chase is impressed with Flacco’s commitment at age 40.

Ravens’ confidence soars as Lamar Jackson thrives in return
In his first game in 32 days, quarterback Lamar Jackson immediately returned to his MVP form and provided hope that the Ravens can get back into the playoff hunt.

Bears at Bengals Week 9: 5 Questions with Windy City Gridiron

The Cincinnati Bengals are desperate for a win against the Chicago Bears in Week 9, but it won’t come easily. Before the loss to the Ravens last week, Chicago was on a four-game win streak, while the Bengals have a 1-3 record in that span.

Joe Flacco has been playing well, but Cincinnati’s defense has continued its struggles from 2024, with the exclamation point coming last Sunday against the Jets. The team had a two-touchdown lead midway through the fourth quarter, but somehow lost by a point at home.

Cincinnati’s bye week looms, making this inter-conference clash a surprisingly critical one, but the Bears are coming in hungry. To get the lay of the land heading into this matchup, we tapped the knowledge of Bill Zimmerman over at SB Nation’s Windy City Gridiron.

Here are the five burning questions we asked ahead of this week’s Week 9 matchup at Paycor Stadium.

1.) AC: What has been the biggest difference in the quality of play from Caleb Williams as a rookie to Year Two?

BZ:
“100% the biggest issue is that he’s playing far more on time. That has caused his sack rate to plummet, and it has greatly improved the Bears’ offense. His sack rate last year was 10.8%; this year it’s down to 5.1%. That puts him 11th in the NFL, right behind Patrick Mahomes.

“Now his time to throw is still higher than most, but that’s also because Caleb has multiple plays per game where he does scramble and try to make a big play down the field, and that makes his time much higher, but in plays where he is playing in structure, the ball is consistently out in less than 3 seconds.

“There is still plenty to clean up; his accuracy needs to improve, and he’s still a little frantic in the pocket. However, it does look improved under Ben Johnson in year two.“

2.) AC: Can you give us a rundown and update on the health of the Bears’ wideouts? It appears that the top guys in that position’s depth chart are dealing with varying injuries.

BZ:
“I’m not too concerned overall about the wide receivers. DJ Moore was listed with those same injuries since the Washington game and has played through them each of the last two weeks. Rome Odunze didn’t practice but had his helmet and was dressed and working. I think that’s just a precaution, and I would expect to see him this week as well.

“The other two are more of a question. Olamide Zaccheaus just popped on the report, and Ben Johnson has called him day-to-day, so I think there’s a decent chance he plays. I would expect to at least see him limited in practice moving forward this week.“

3.) AC: A big point of emphasis this offseason for the Bears was bolstering their offensive line. How much have they improved, and what can a reeling Bengals defense expect from the big uglies up front for Chicago?

BZ:
“The offensive line is night and day compared to last season. Last year, their line was one of the worst in the league. This year, it’s definitely in the top half of the league, and I would argue it’s pushing to be in the top ten.

“Yes, Caleb Williams has improved at getting the ball out, and that has decreased his sack rate, but so has improved blocking. The run game didn’t look great the first few weeks, but they’ve had a couple of outstanding games in October, and that’s starting to turn the corner as well.

“Individually, Darnell Wright has taken steps forward at right tackle and is becoming one of the best right tackles in the league. Joe Thuney at left guard hasn’t lost a step and is playing at an All-Pro level. Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson aren’t elite players, but both of them are good.

“The question on this line is left tackle, where 2nd year UDFA Theo Benedet is playing. He certainly struggles against elite talent, but he’s done surprisingly well considering his background. But if the Bengals want to attack this line, left tackle is where to do it.“

4.) AC: Give me an under-the-radar player for the Bears on offense and defense–particularly ones you see potentially stepping up this week?

BZ:
“For the offense, I’ll give you 7th round rookie Kyle Monangai. Monongai jumped Roschon Johnson during training camp to become the team’s RB2, and he’s slowly seen his snap count and touches increase. Monangai is a between-the-tackles runner who runs with some power and has averaged over 10 touches a game the last two weeks.

“Ben Johnson is trying to set up a poor man’s version of what he had in Detroit with lightning (Gibbs/Swift) and thunder (Montgomery/Monangai). Obviously, the Bears’ versions are less talented players, but that’s where he’s trying to get, and we have seen the run scheme look better recently, and I expect it to look good against Cincinnati.“

5.) AC: Earlier this week, many Sportsbooks had the Bears as 2.5-point favorites over the Bengals this Sunday. Perhaps the Flacco injury situation has affected that line a little bit, as Chicago has ticked up to three-point favorites, per FanDuel. How do you feel about that line–particularly with the Bears being on the road–and how do you see this one going?

“I think if Joe Flacco plays, I think this is a toss-up game, so I think the point spread is fair. I think if Jake Browning plays, bettors would certainly like the Bears, so I’m sure that’s why it was bet out to 3. I think the bottom line in this one is that the Bengals’ defense stinks. Sorry to be blunt, but I know you’ve all seen the statistics.

“Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson’s elite games against Dallas, and since I think the Cincinnati defense is similar, I expect the Bears’ offense to have a similar day. I do think if Flacco plays, the Bengals offense will have some success against the Bears’ defense. The Bears have both Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon on IR and just signed CJ Gardner-Johnson for some much-needed (desperate?) help in the secondary.

“If Flacco comes in and just chucks it to Chase and Higgins, he’s going to gain some yardage because I think they’ll be able to exploit the Bears’ secondary. I would feel more confident that Jake Browning wouldn’t be able to do that as much.

“I will pick the Bears either way in this one. If it’s Browning, I’ll call it 34-20; if it’s Flacco, I’ll call it 31-27.“

Cincinnati Bengals 2026 NFL Draft prospects to watch in college football Week 10

imagn-27372568.jpg

Penn State at Ohio State (12:00 p.m. ET)

The Cincinnati Bengals could be looking to add a safety during the 2026 NFL Draft.

Geno Stone is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. I don’t see the Bengals rushing to sign him to an extension. They have not been getting consistent play from Jordan Battle this season either. If they do have an interest in adding a safety, there will be a couple of players to watch for both teams in this Big Noon match-up between the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes.

First off, Penn State has safety Zakee Wheatley. He has been one of the few players who have played up to their potential for them this season. Wheatley is a 6’3” 200 200-pound versatile prospect with good ball skills and range on the back end of a defense.

Zakee Wheatley is the only reason I'm still watching Penn State tape every week. Almost single-handedly giving this defense a pulse pic.twitter.com/jZlrTaGEsp

For the Buckeyes, they have All-American Caleb Downs. Downs is known as a coach on the field for Ohio State. He can play in the box, slot, or at deep safety. He is a ferocious tackler and makes big plays in big moments.

Would the Bengals be willing to take a safety in the first round? I am not sure they would. However, Downs has that leader of a defense mentality that is sorely lacking in this locker room. He is also a reliable tackler in the open field. That has been a recurring issue for the Bengals defensively for multiple seasons.

The ultimate equalizer. Can matchup in man and has excellent zone instincts. Plays balanced and violent on arrival. Consistent open field tackler. pic.twitter.com/MG6V9Ka8nJ

Oklahoma at Tennessee (7:30 p.m. ET)

The Bengals are lacking a pass rusher from the interior defensive line. Oklahoma is going to have several talented lineman over the next couple of drafts. One to watch for this class is Gracen Halton. Halton is likely a mid-round prospect for the Sooners due to being considered a bit undersized for the defensive tackle position. He is listed at 6’2” and 292 pounds. What he can do is get after the quarterback. He has 7.5 sacks over the past two seasons for the Sooners. Only 2.5 of those have come this season. However, he still has 17 pressures on the season already.

The Bengals still need to find an outside cornerback. Cam Taylor-Britt is scheduled to be a free agent. The Bengals are likely to let him walk. Dax Hill needs to get back to taking more snaps in the slot. Tennessee has a couple of different cornerback prospects the Bengals could be interested in. The first is Jermod McCoy. He may be the best cornerback in the nation. The problem is, he has yet to play this season after an injury he sustained in January. That has allowed another cornerback to step up and potentially work his way into the first or second round mix this year. That player is Colton Hood. Hood was a transfer from Colorado last season. Hood has the ability to stick with any wide receiver in the country. He possesses excellent closing speed, vision in coverage, and quality ball skills.

Cincinnati at Utah (10:15 p.m. ET)

Last week I discussed Brendon Sorsby as a potential backup quarterback prospect for the Bengals. I think he is more likely to play his way into being a top 50 draft selection, than he is to being a day three option for the Bengals. Instead I want to give a little love to Jake Golday on the opposite of the ball. Golday should be drafted before the end of day two this year. He has great size for a linebacker at 6’4” 237 pounds. He is a highly productive player with excellent coverage ability. His improved play as a downhill run defender on top of that is what makes him such a fun prospect. Throw in the fact that he is effective as a pass rusher when asked to blitz, and this is another player from the Bearcats that could be in the top 50 conversation this year.

UC LB Jake Golday has had a bunch of "wow" reps through two weeks. Type of rangey, jumbo LB (6-4, 240) that everyone in the NFL is looking for. Trending towards a top-100 pick pic.twitter.com/UHhnyqNabG

— Mike Renner (@mikerenner_) September 7, 2025

Utah is going to be a tough game for the Bearcats. Utah has multiple draft-eligible players on both sides of the ball. One player that has been mocked to the Bengals on several occasions already is Caleb Lomu. I actually think Lomu will go back to college for another season personally, but he is draft-eligible. The left tackle prospect could sit for a season behind Orlando Brown Jr. if he did declare and was selected by the Bengals. Spencer Fano is actually my favorite prospect of the two, however he plays at right tackle. I don’t think the Bengals would want to switch him back to left (he played that his freshman year) or Amarius Mims. For that reason, Lomu is the prospect that would be more likely to garner interest from the Bengals.

Love watching #Utah get LT Caleb Lomu out in space and utilize his athleticism to seal off the playside linebacker. Springs a nice gain. Thought he had some nice moments anchoring in pass pro against UCLA too. pic.twitter.com/QdIHqkmVqF
