It’s a Colorado Avalanche game day!

Coming off a disappointing OT loss to the Wild, Colorado has another chance to put some distance between themselves and a Western Conference wildcard hopeful. The surprising Flames have turned around a downward trend for the franchise thanks to excellent goaltending from rookie goalie Dustin Wolf, who is about to have his hands full with Nathan MacKinnon’s high powered Avalanche and their bevvy of new toys.

It’s a Colorado Avalanche game day!

After extending their point streak against Minnesota and Calgary on the road, the Colorado Avalanche return home briefly for a matinee matchup against the Dallas Stars. This will be the third and final regular-season matchup between these two teams. This one is an emotional and highly anticipated matchup between Mikko Rantanen and his former teammates! Get your popcorn ready!

Colorado Avalanche

It’s no secret that this game has massive playoff implications for Colorado. Dallas is likely the team the Avs will play for the first-round matchup, and with their win over Calgary on Friday night, Colorado is just three points behind the Stars for second place in the Central Division.

As for the elephant in the room, Colorado will also take on Mikko Rantanen today. He returns to Denver with the Dallas Stars, which will be a strange sight for everyone involved. The saga continues as Mikko tells his side of the story ahead of his matchup with Nathan MacKinnon and friends. We hear there are dinner plans!

Dallas Stars

Dallas comes into this divisional matchup game off of another divisional matchup, in which they lost 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets. This one is equally important to the Dallas Stars, who are clinging to that second spot in the Central. Some think home-ice advantage isn’t much of an advantage, but I’ve always argued that Colorado is the exception. Getting Dallas at altitude could be the tipping point in what should otherwise be a grueling and competitive first-round series against Dallas.

Recap: Cale Makar wrecks Mikko Rantanen’s return in 4-3 overtime win

NHL: Dallas Stars at Colorado Avalanche

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

Makar had a three-point performance and Scott Wedgewood made a series of spectacular saves en route to a critical victory.

All hail Cale!

Cale Makar scored 34 seconds into overtime, and the Colorado Avalanche fended off the Dallas Stars 4-3 in a statement victory at Ball Arena.

The 2021-22 Norris Trophy winner finished with a goal and two assists. Scott Wedgewood made 20 saves, many of which were incredible, and the Avs improved to 8-0-1 over their last nine games.

Mikko Rantanen made his highly-anticipated return to Denver after being traded twice in six weeks. He received a mostly positive reception during his tribute video, but that was the end of the celebration as the fans booed him nearly every time he touched the puck after that point.

Nathan MacKinnon was also honored during pre-game festivities for scoring his 1,000th NHL point this past Monday against the Chicago Blackhawks in a 3-0 shutout victory. MacKinnon’s family, including his fiancee, took part in the ceremony, along with Andrew Cogliano and Gabe Landeskog. Moreover, Makar and Devon Toews also joined in to provide flowers.

First Period

One minute and three seconds into the game, Jamie Benn sent the Avalanche on an early power play after he knocked over Wedgewood for an easy goaltender interference call.

After the Stars killed the penalty, they scored on their first shot of the game when Jason Robertson found the net for his 29th goal of the season. It all materialized after an attempt to dump the puck by Toews was blocked by a referee, which allowed Rantanen to gain control of the puck, and he set up Robertson from just above the right circle for a sweet goal.

With 8:28 remaining in the period, Benn was penalized again, but this time, the officials came down hard on him with a four-minute double minor offense for high-sticking Ryan Lindgren. But unlike the first penalty, the sequel ended up costing his guys. With 6:11 left, Colton one-timed a shot from the right side of the net and was robbed on a beautiful save from Oettinger. However, 20 seconds later, Marty Nečas scored on the power play to tie the game at one when he redirected a shot from Makar to the upper right corner of the net. Since joining the team on January 24, Nečas is ranked fourth for most goals scored on the Avalanche behind MacKinnon, Makar, and Artturi Lehkonen with seven.

Second Period

Colorado came out firing on all cylinders to begin the second period of action, but Oettinger was putting on a show, including a glove save off a one-timer from Nečas. With 16:28 remaining, Parker Kelly was whistled for goaltender interference after making slight contact with Oettinger, who went down like a sat of bricks. That was enough to convince the officials to call the penalty. Dallas poured the pressure, but Lindgren gathered up the puck and dumped it out of the zone.

Their patience and resilience paid off when Val Nichushkin walked the puck downhill and ripped a shot inside the post for a goal to give Colorado their first lead of the game. That was Nichushkin’s 17th goal in just 30 games this season.

With less than nine minutes left in the frame, Robertson cross-checked Makar in the mouth and sent him down to his knees, yet no penalty was called. When the replay was shown on the jumbotron, the local fans erupted in boos, jeering at the officials with scores of profanity and indecorous gestures.

Jonathan Drouin gave the Avalanche a two-goal advantage when he rifled a one-timer from the right circle with 2:40 left in the period. Colorado had been applying consistent pressure. Prior to the goal, Nichushkin carried the puck down the right wing and fed Sam Malinski a prime opportunity for a one-timer. His stick exploded, but his teammates managed to keep the puck in their possession, providing their wingman enough time to grab a new stick. He subsequently got back into the play and supplied Drouin with the one-timer magic.

Late in the second, karma struck Marchment. When they were battling for puck possession behind the net, Toews accidentally tripped Makar, but the officials called it on Marchment, who tried to plead his case to the refs but to no avail.

Third Period

It was a shooting gallery at the beginning of the period for Colorado, but Oettinger came up big, denying Drouin and Necas from scoring their second goals of the game. With 11:32 remaining, Kelly, who scored two goals on Friday against Calgary, snapped a shot that ricocheted off Oettinger’s mask and into the screen for a stoppage of play.

But Dallas pushed Colorado into deep waters down the stretch and pierced the armor, scoring twice in 20 seconds. The first goal came with 5:48 left when the Stars took advantage of a quick transition, and Mavrik Bourque finally punched one in after a series of spectacular saves from Wedgewood as a quartet of bodies were sprawled across the ice. Duchene scored on his former team on the subsequent shift to make it a 3-3 game after pouncing on a juicy rebound.

Overtime

Makar took control of the puck and, writhed his way through the Stars defense, beating Oettinger with a dazzling goal to win the game 4-3.

Takeaways

Why can’t the playoffs just start now? This was an incredible game from start to finish, with an exuberance of momentum shifts. Colorado has won nine consecutive home games and sent a message to the entire league tonight. Yes, a few goals came through late in the game, but the team responded to the adversity with ferocity. That’s what wins championships.

Wedgewood got the start again because Makenzie Blackwood still didn’t feel well enough to get in the net. Josh Manson was replaced in the lineup with Sam Malinski and Jared Bednar described Manson’s upper-body injury more as week-to-week.

Next Game

The Avalanche (41-24-3) head to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs (39-24-3) on Wednesday, March 19th. Puck drop is at 5 p.m. local time.

Introducing your new Managing Editor

John A. Babiak

I am excited to share this news with the MHH community!

Surprise!

It’s me, Jackie Kay, your new Managing Editor.

After years of changes I’m hoping this will be the smoothest transition of all as I’m stepping up to take the helm to lead the ship that is Mile High Hockey.

The journey began as I became a member of this wonderful Colorado Avalanche community back in 2013 and then began writing for the site in 2017 recapping games at the end of that fateful 2016-17 season. After the year I stayed on writing in an unofficial capacity for five years until I took a contributing editor position in 2022. Through four different managing editors since then I never left because this is home to me.

But it’s not about me, Mile High Hockey is about you, our community of readers.

There are many different platforms and outlets that do a tremendous job covering the Avalanche but what they don’t have is our community, which is in my opinion the strongest hockey family on the web. If that means we are a “blog” then I wear that badge proudly.

What I strive for as leader of Mile High Hockey is stability and consistency. Something that has been hard to come by over the last few years as the site, team and world at large has been through many ups and downs. I’m honored and humbled to have this opportunity because there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

With that in mind, none of the hockey content you expect is changing and we will continue looking to enhance with the goal to grow the site and community even bigger and stronger. This will always be a space to laugh, cry, cheer, criticize and be Avalanche fans together.

On behalf of Adrian, Ezra, Jess, Ryan, John, Brennan, Casey and Eddie, we are Mile High Hockey.

Go Avs!

Breaking down Hart and Norris Trophy odds

Will Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar bring home more hardware?

As much of this discussion has rightfully centered on the Colorado Avalanche’s quest for the Stanley Cup, there are several individual trophies within reach for the two franchise pillars, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. It’s clear both drive the success the Avalanche achieve, as evidenced by the 4-16-2 record when neither of them hit the scoresheet, and could be recognized — again — by the NHL for their contributions.

Avs are 4-16-2 over the last two seasons when MacKinnon and Makar are scoreless in the same game.
It wasn’t a problem last night when both were held in check in a 4-2 win over Calgary.

— Eric Francis (@EricFrancis) March 15, 2025

Despite MacKinnon and Makar combining for the overtime winner against the Dallas Stars and leading the league in points at their respective positions, both are not a unanimous choice to win individual trophies.

Avalanche superstar center MacKinnon is the reigning Hart Trophy winner as the league’s MVP but according to some betting odds on the web, such as from Fanduel for example, it is actually Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl who has the slight edge. Currently Draisaitl trails in points with 101 to MacKinnon’s 103. Maybe the fact that Draisaitl had 49 goals is driving the odds or the situation that the Oilers forward has 15 more points than teammate Connor McDavid.

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who should run away with his third Vezina Trophy for the league’s best goaltender, also has a little edge over MacKinnon. Winnipeg currently leads the NHL with 98 points and Hellebuyck’s .927 is certainly a factor but not the only reason for their high level of success.

Some voters feel goalies already have their own award so it’s tough to see Hellebuyck have enough support to take the trophy over both former Hart winners Draisaitl and MacKinnon. It might come down to points and if MacKinnon can maintain his lead in that category then it would be hard to imagine he doesn’t take home the hardware for a second year in a row. There is also the Art Ross Trophy given to the player with the most points at regular season’s end which is another possible award for MacKinnon as well.

CALE MAKAR OVERTIME WINNER

HE'S JUST TOO GOOD pic.twitter.com/iOLVJRcQ2d

— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) March 16, 2025

As far as superstar defenseman Makar, he is currently in the lead in odds to win the Norris trophy. A recent surge to 78 points has put him top 10 in the NHL in scoring and Makar has a healthy lead in points at the defense position. Reigning Norris winner Quinn Hughes would be closer in the conversation if he hadn’t just missed time with injury but he’s a distant third right now.

The surprise season by the Columbus Blue Jackets has put a lot of spotlight on Zach Warenski as they are in the mix to grab a playoff berth. Werenski leads his team with 69 points and has already surpassed his career highs. The odds place him as Makar’s closest competitor at this point. It may come down to total points in this race as well and the argument that Werenski leads in 5v5 points might come up if it’s close down the stretch.

MacKinnon and Makar are already recognized as the Avalanche’s best players on ice and with trophies already etched. But it is possible both with add one more each in a season where they could potentially reach new heights personally as they hope the season has a special ending.

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Toronto Maple Leafs (5:00 p.m.)

Colorado Avalanche v Toronto Maple Leafs

It’s a Colorado Avalanche gameday!

Following a strong performance in an emotional overtime victory over Mikko Rantanen and the Dallas Stars Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Avalanche will embark on their final Eastern Conference road trip of the season, which will take them through Eastern Canada. The Avs will face the Maple Leafs in Toronto to start the trip.

Eleven days removed from a high-octane matchup between these two clubs, which featured a slew of new players on both sides making their new-team debuts following the trade deadline, the clubs have seen different results on the ice whilst acclimating their new pieces. While the Avs have continued to roll along in the win column, having gone 4-0-1 since the deadline, the Leafs have struggled to find their footing at 1-3-1.

Can the #Avs extend their point streak in Toronto?! #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/DZnI8XxEDj

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) March 19, 2025

This will be the first game of a back-to-back swing in Ontario, as the Avs will be right back at it against a highly motivated Ottawa Senators squad on Thursday. Tonight presents an excellent opportunity for Colorado to snag two points in the first half of the back-to-back against a cup contender who is going through a skid as the Avs pursue the Stars and Jets in the standings.

Colorado Avalanche:

Since dismantling the Maple Leafs 7-4 on home ice just 11 days ago, the Avs have continued to roll along with their new lineup. The squad looks focused and sharp, and the results have reflected that as they continue to close the gap with the Dallas Stars. Coming off of that huge overtime win over the Stars into a road trip, concerns of an emotional letdown performance are there, but with a couple of day’s rest and home ice in the first round-up for grabs, the Avs figure to be a highly motivated group, who’ll treat each night as a playoff game in this pursuit of Dallas.

In the handful of games these two teams have played since squaring off, the Avs have secured points in all of them, going 4-0-1 in that span. Their defensive commitment has been a large reason for that success, keeping their opponent to no more than 24 shots on goal in each game. This commitment to defensive detail has made things very easy for their goaltender each night, with Scott Wedgewood reaping much of the benefit last week.

Josh Manson will not play tonight and is considered to miss the next 3-4 weeks as he continues to deal with an upper-body injury sustained in the win over the Calgary Flames last Friday. He’s essentially out for the regular season. Sam Malinski should continue to play in his place, while Ryan Lindgren and Erik Johnson figure to eat up a large chunk of Manson’s penalty kill minutes.

Timeline for Josh Manson is roughly 3-4 weeks, per Jared Bednar.

— Jesse Montano (@jessemontano_) March 19, 2025

Additionally, despite the hype and speculation (aided by some jokes from the man himself), Gabriel Landeskog will not be in the lineup tonight. There’s still plenty of work for Landeskog and the Avs to do to prepare him for his long-awaited postseason return. He will skate with the squad on the road, and if all goes well, he’ll return from the road trip with the team with another goal crossed off the return list.

Jared Bednar says Landeskog's presence is huge for the Avalanche's morale. Plan is for him to skate some days, take others off. Get to a point where he can take contact.

"The guys are optimistic and really hoping that he's going to be able to do it."

— luke fox (@lukefoxjukebox) March 19, 2025

Mackenzie Blackwood will return to the crease tonight after getting some time off to let a red-hot Scott Wedgewood take the reigns. Blackwood has not played since the Avs last loss, a shootout defeat to the Minnesota Wild on March 11th. He was solid in regulation, turning aside 22 of 23 shots, but could not come up with a stop in the shootout. Additionally, he had a rough outing when the Avs defeated these very Maple Leafs a couple of days before his last start, so hopefully, the Avs can see a bit of a return to consistent form from Blackwood, who only has a .904 save percentage in six starts since the return from the Four Nations break.

Projected Lineup:

Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)
Jonathan Drouin (27) — Brock Nelson (11) — Valeri Nichushkin (13)
Joel Kiviranta (94) — Charlie Coyle (10) — Ross Colton (20)
Parker Kelly (17) — Jack Drury (18) — Logan O’Connor (25)

Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)
Ryan Lindgren (55) — Sam Malinski (70)
Samuel Girard (49) — Erik Johnson (6)

Mackenzie Blackwood (39)
Scott Wedgewood (41)

Toronto Maple Leafs:

The Leafs have been on a skid in March. Toronto went 2-4-2 within the month and went on a six-game losing streak that was snapped on Monday in a 6-2 blowout of the Flames in Toronto’s annual ‘St. Pats’ game. They’ll be looking to ride the momentum of that game into tonight as they wrap up a four-game homestand with the Avalanche. So far, the Leafs are 1-2-0 on the homestand.

Since the deadline, Toronto has struggled to keep the puck out of their own net. In their five games since acquiring forward Scott Laughton and defenseman Brandon Carlo (for high prices to Philadelphia and Boston, respectively), the Maple Leafs have allowed 19 goals against, good for nearly four goals per game. Monday was a return to form for defensive structure for the Leafs, and they will need to stay structured to avoid another Avalanche throttling.

Reporter asks Craig Berube the key to slowing down Nathan MacKinnon.

"Well, I don't know. But if you find out before the game, you can let me know."

— luke fox (@lukefoxjukebox) March 19, 2025

Joseph Woll will get the start in net for the Leafs. Woll has had a good season, emerging as Totonto’s primary starter in goal. He has played more games in the Leafs’ crease than any other netminder in Toronto this season. In 34 starts, he boasts a 23-12-0 record, with a 2.75 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.

Projected Lineup:

Matthew Knies (23) — Auston Matthews (34) — Mitch Marner (16)
Pontus Holmberg (29) — John Tavares (91) — William Nylander (88)
Bobby McMann (74) — Max Domi (11) — Nicholas Robertson (89)
Steven Lorentz (18) — Scott Laughton (24) — Calle Jarnkrok (19)

Morgan Rielly (44) — Brandon Carlo (25)
Jake McCabe (22) — Chris Tanev (8)
Simon Benoit (2) — Oliver Ekman-Larsson (95)

Joseph Woll (60)
Anthony Stolarz (41)

Recap: Avalanche lose to Maple Leafs 2-1 after unfortunate goal decides a nailbiter

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs

John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images

The referee made a diving save, but it didn’t work out in Colorado’s favor.

Valeri Nichushkin scored in his third consecutive game, but it wasn’t enough for the Colorado Avalanche to secure victory Wednesday night in Toronto.

Steven Lorentz scored on a controversial goal 2:53 into the third period to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 advantage and the Avalanche were unable to recover despite outshooting their counterparts 39-26.

Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar each had an assist on the night. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced, while his opponent across the ice, Joseph Woll, lived up to his name, stopping 38 of 39 shots.

First Period

At 6:02 into the game, both teams were penalized when Artturi Lehkonen and Matthew Knies exchanged fouls. The officials sent Lehkonen to the box for elbowing, while Knies was admonished for high-sticking. This resulted in two minutes of 4-on-4 play. A similar situation would also occur later in the game.

With less than four minutes to go in the first, Sam Malinski made a great defensive play to break up an offensive opportunity from Toronto when Michael Nylander was driving the puck down the ice and past the blue line.

In the closing stages of the opening frame, Jack Drury lost his edge and his stick ended up clipping Jake McCabe in the face. As a result, Drury was penalized for high-sticking. After 20 minutes of play the game was at a scoreless tie.

Second Period

Auston Matthews put the Maple Leafs up 1-0 just 28 seconds into the second when his shot was re-directed by Devon Toews in a brilliant play from the former No. 1 overall pick.

However, 1:28 later, Brandon Carlo was penalized for tripping Marty Nečas to put the Avalanche on their first power play of the game. And when it was time for big Val to step up, he didn’t miss. Nichushkin tied the game at one on the power play when he one-timed a pass from Nathan Mackinnon from the slot. With his 18th goal of the season, Nichushkin passed Adam Foote on the all-time franchise PP points leaderboard and moved into a tie for 37th all-time.

For the second time in the game, we saw 4-on-4 play when Parker Kelly and John Tavaras drew the ire of officials for fouling one another in front of the Leafs’ net but neither team scored. After the second period the game was tied 1-1.

Third Period

Toronto was called for too many men on the ice 1:31 into the third period. But it didn’t matter as they scored 1:22 later when Steven Lorentz short handed found the net with some assistance from an official. When Toronto dumped the puck from their zone, the referee dove, thinking it would hit him. It drilled him indeed, and instead of a dump, Lorentz picked up the loose puck and scored on the breakaway to break the 1-1 tie.

With 6:36 remaining in regulation, Erik Johnson teed up a slapshot from the blue line, but his stick broke upon impact. This also engendered an opportunity for his teammates to pounce on the rebound, but Woll stoned them cold. The extra attacker didn’t help the Avalanche find the equalizer and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Toronto.

Takeaways

Avalanche fans aren’t too happy with how this one ended and they shouldn’t be. While the ref did contribute to the last goal, we can’t forget that this was just one moment in a game that lasts 60 minutes. Some pucks went their way, some pucks that didn’t go their way. There were instances where the officials may have had a case to have a penalty go against the Avalanche, which went the opposite direction. Don’t blame this loss on the officials. It was still an amazing game nonetheless and it came down to the wire. Congratulations to Toronto on a well-played game. Perhaps this is the year they make it past the first round of the playoffs.

As for Colorado, you can’t fault the effort. MacKinnon was out there making plays and how about Charlie Coyle? That guy just never gives up. He pours his guts out on the ice and fights for every possession. That’s the type of play this team has been missing. Brock Nelson was also involved. He had three shots on goal, including a wrister from the front of the net, but again, Woll was outstanding tonight. He deserves all the credit for a great performance.

Next Game

The Avalanche (41-25-3) have no time to rest. They square off against Brady Tkachuk and the Ottawa Senators (36-26-5) Thursday night. Puck drop is at 5 pm. local time from Canadian Tire Centre.

Colorado Avalanche v Ottawa Senators

It’s another Colorado Avalanche gameday!

After a disappointing end against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, Colorado gets the chance to bounce back tonight against the Ottawa Senators on the second leg of a back-to-back. This will be the second and last regular-season matchup between these two teams, with the Colorado Avalanche winning the first game by a final score of 5-4.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs head into Ottawa tonight off of a loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, in which a fluky bounce on the game-winning goal ultimately decided the outcome. Colorado played well in this game for the most part, but they were unable to solve Joseph Woll despite putting up 39 shots on goal.

While this is certainly easier said than done, especially on the second leg of a back-to-back, Colorado will need to generate that volume of chances here tonight against the Senators, who have been rolling lately. If last night’s changes were any indication of how Jared Bednar wants to accomplish this, the lines may look like this:

Projected Lineup

Valeri Nichushkin - Nathan MacKinnon - Brock Nelson
Artturi Lehkonen - Charlie Coyle - Martin Necas
Jonathan Drouin - Jack Drury - Ross Colton
Joel Kiviranta - Parker Kelly - Logan O’Connor

Devon Toews - Cale Makar
Ryan Lindgren - Sam Malinski

Recap: Avs score four in first period, defeat Senators 5-1

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs

John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images

Colorado’s depth was on display and Cale Makar made more history.

The Colorado Avalanche snowed in the Ottawa Senators on their own ice Thursday night at Canadian Tire Centre.

Brock Nelson scored his first and second goals in an Avalanche uniform, while Nathan MacKinnon and Joel Kiviranta each added insurance to help the Avalanche defeat the Senators 5-1. It was a complete effort from a team that continues to bond and get stronger down the stretch of the regular season.

Cale Makar recorded two points, including a goal, and Jonathan Drouin and Ross Colton also had two points on the night. Scott Wedgewood had an easy night in the net, as he stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced. With the victory, the Avalanche improved to 42-25-3. They remain third in the Central Division, three points shy of the second-place Dallas Stars.

First Period

From the onset, we knew it would be a physical altercation. Former teammates Brady Tkachuk and Parker Kelly exchanged pleasantries against the boards early on in the opening period and that energy carried on. Kelly found himself in the middle of another scrum until Keaton Middleton came to the rescue and gave Tyler Kleven a few hard shoves to the jaw.

At 10:29, MacKinnon scored with a quick wrister to put Colorado on the board first after Drouin delivered a perfect backhand feed. Less than a minute later, Brock Nelson scored his first goal in an Avalanche sweater after Sam Malinski, who has been playing his best hockey since the deadline, fed him a pass just in the nick of time as Nelson struck gold with a beautiful snapshot that hit the top shelf.

Colorado wasn’t done scoring. After Ridly Greig was sent to the box for tripping, Makar scored on the power play when he ripped a shot for a goal as Ullmark was screened by his own defender. After Kiviranta scored to make it a 4-0 game, Sens head coach Travis Vernon Green had seen enough and yanked Ullmark for Anton Forsberg.

Late in the first, Dylan Cozens blasted Jack Drury in the center of the ice and was whistled for interference, but not before Logan O’Connor went after him for the dirty play.

Second Period

That poor decision resulted in another power play goal for the Avalanche. And it was Nelson again for his second of the night to make it 5-0 after he re-directed a shot from Lehkonen, who entered Thursday night’s matchup with a four-game pointless streak.

At 13:04 of the second, Malinski and David Perron were each sentenced to two minutes in the box for roughing, resulting in some 4-on-4 action.

With 2:25 left in the frame, Shane Pinto attempted to snatch the puck away from Makar. Not only did he miss, but he also managed to clip him up high with his stick. As a result, Pinto put Colorado on their third power play of the game. Someone on Ottawa’s staff clearly wanted to entertain themselves during the delay, as the signature Law & Order ‘dun-dun’ sound played on the speakers for their own player being sent to the box.

Third Period

Less than two minutes into the third period, Marty Necas got control of the puck and attempted to carry it down the ice. However, he didn’t make it very far after Perron took a swipe with his stick and sent Necas down, earning him a tripping penalty, his second of the night, and Colorado went on their fourth power play of the evening.

After the Sens killed the penalty, both teams fought on even terms. But with 11:34 remaining, the Avs went on their first penalty kill of the game after Drury high-sticked Pinto. Following a series of impressive saves from Wedgewood, Colorado escaped the penalty kill unscathed.

With 4:49 left in the game, the Avs gave the Sens another opportunity when Middleton was busted for interference. Unfortunately, this blew Wedgewood’s shutout attempt when Ottawa finally punched one in. Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson played some tic-tac-toe before Cozens rifled a wrister that hit top shelf from the left circle for his 14th of the season. But it wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the game as Colorado rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Takeaways

Following a close loss to Toronto on Wednesday, the Avalanche responded with a terrific performance against a very solid team. The Senators are no slouch. They sit fourth in the Eastern Conference and have won seven of their last 10 games. But that goes to show you just how good this team is. On the other hand, the Avs-Leafs game also exemplified just how many good teams there are in the league. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that this is some of the best hockey that the league has ever seen.

With his assist on the opening goal, Makar recorded the third 80-point season of his career, tying him with Brian Leetch and Phil Housley for the sixth most among defensemen in NHL history. Can Makar get to 100 points? Only six defenseman have done it in history: Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis, Leetch, and Erik Karlsson. Don’t count him out.

Next Game

The Avalanche (42-25-3) continue their Tour De Canada on Saturday when they take on the Montreal Canadiens (33-27-7) at Bell Centre. Puck drop is at 5 p.m. local time.

Mile High Pollster: Optimistic fans anticipate Landeskog’s return

COLORADO AVALANCHE VS CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS, NHL

Photo by AAron Ontiveroz/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images

92% of fans think Landeskog is coming back!

It's another installment of Mile High Pollster! Adrian Hernandez took to X this week to get the Colorado Avalanche fan perspective, and some interesting results have come back. Let's take a look!

An Avalanche of Flames

The Colorado Avalanche are on an absolute tear in March, winning every game but a shootout loss to Minnesota and a fluke regulation loss to the Maple Leafs. That means they have secured points in 9 of their last 10 games. They have earned 17 of a possible 20 points this month. 98% of Avalanche fans agree that the Avalanche are on fire!

Landeskog Emerges

Speaking of March, the first month of spring has also brought new life to the story of Gabe Landeskog's hopeful return to the ice. We've seen him finally practicing with the team; he is on the Canadian road trip and participating in everything but the games. Hope is on the horizon, and public opinion has flip-flopped on these steps in the right direction.

The results from the pollster we dropped about a month ago are above, and this week's poll is pictured below. Avs fans are singing a different tune regarding the return of their beloved captain!

I asked about this about a month ago, but let's get an update and see if anything has changed.

Full Nelson

When I sent this poll, newly acquired Brock Nelson had yet to score a point. Well, that has all changed after last night's two-goal performance. I left space for it to be too early to worry about Brock, and wouldn't you know it, the level-headed Avalanche community was right. Patience is a virtue, as 73% of fans say that "things take time."

Are you worried about Brock Nelson’s level of production so far? #GoAvsGo | @MileHighHockey | @MHH_LAB

Contributions come in many forms that aren’t always represented in the score sheet. Timely screen on chu chu goal, hitting 4 posts, strong on pucks and an effective forecheck. Points will come

— Scott (@themostcomfy) March 19, 2025

Makar for Norris

Cale Makar is the world's best defender, but will the Norris vote shake out that way? Some media pundits are still leaning toward Quinn Hughes, and a big thing that has come about is some JFresh analytics that says that without MacKinnon, the team is better without Makar than with him. My response to that will be a whole other article, so stay posted, but my theory as to why is pretty straightforward. Nonetheless, sometimes you must look hard for a flaw because there isn't much to find. Cale Makar is the best defender in the world, and it's that simple.

Will Cale Makar win the Norris? #GoAvsGo

— Adrian Hernandez (@AdoHernandez27) March 18, 2025

Back-to-back

Since we are on the topic of season-long awards, what about Nate Dogg's campaign for back-to-back MVP seasons? I, for one, think it's a lock, given all that MacKinnon has accomplished this season. It's no surprise that Avs fans agree with this!

Will Nathan MacKinnon be a back-to-back MVP?#GoAvsGo | @MileHighHockey | @MHH_LAB

— Adrian Hernandez (@AdoHernandez27) March 21, 2025

The dark horse in this race is Russian veteran phenom Alexandar Ovechkin, who scored his 888th career goal and sits just seven short of Gretzky's all-time goal record. It's not entirely out of the question for voters to default to that accomplishment and honor Ovi with another MVP. Oh yeah, and what on god's green earth does Jared Bednar have to do to be nominated for the Jack Adams Award? Does he have to make the playoffs with 45+ different players? Oh, wait.

Should be, but wont be. i can see them give it to Ovechkin if he breaks the record this year and the Caps go deep into May. It'd be the NHL thing to do. I also think Bednar gets ignored for Jack Adams...AGAIN.

Friday Feels: Sammy Time

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Ottawa Senators

Marc DesRosiers-Imagn Images

The Feels is back with a lot of love for Sam Malinski

Wow, been a while since we got a Friday Feels on the site, hasn’t it? That’s a direct quote from outgoing managing editor Evan Liu, subtly telling me he’s disappointed. And hey, I’m truly sorry I’ve been MIA on the writing front - but life is busy, and I give my all to the podcast. So please forgive.

I haven’t written one of these since before the Four Nations tournament, the trade deadline, my engagement to my now fiancée, two short film premieres, roughly a million sketch and improv shows, and so much more that kept me away. But you don’t care about my life, you care about the Avalanche - let’s dive in.

Sam Malinski is playing so incredibly well right now, I love him more than my fiancée (I just like saying that word, I’ll stop.) (Also don’t tell her I said that). He’s not only contributing how we’ve come to expect - high end first passes and great skating through the neutral zone to generate rush chances from the back end - he’s also defending at a very high level, and chipping in points at the other end while doing it. Gone are the days where it seemed like he could only dial in his game at one end of the ice or the other - Sammy Jr. has leveled up!

And it couldn’t have come at a better time for Colorado with Josh Manson banged up again, and now Sammy Sr. Girard on the shelf as well. Malinski has been pressed into more minutes and risen to the occasion, slotting into the lineup alongside Ryan Lindgren and helping to cover up some of Lindgren’s rough edges in puck possession while excelling in his own right.

In last night’s beatdown of the Ottawa Senators, Malinski set up Brock Nelson’s first career Avalanche goal with a nifty assist on the rush while skating the most minutes of any Avalanche player at even strength. In the stupid loss to Toronto the night before (curse you Kelly Sutherland!), he tilted the ice in Colorado’s favor to the tune of a 9-3 Shots on goal differential, 60% Corsi For, and 62% Expected Goals For. Granted the team has to actually score for that to matter, but still good.

Those two games continue a trend for Malinski since the trade deadline, where even though he was scratched a few times to give Erik Johnson some ice time before Manson’s injury, both metrics and the eye test show a guy making a positive impact every time he touches the ice. His worst night by the metrics in that stretch was the Dallas game, but on a night when his possession numbers lagged he contributed three shots, an assist, and wasn’t on the ice for a goal against. If that’s your floor, you’re a quality NHL defender.

With a fully healthy defense group, Malinski’s play should lock him in to the third pair right D spot, though EJ will likely continue to get some games there as well. Manson will miss a few weeks, however, and while he’s gone I’m very comfortable with Malinski getting second pair minutes if he can keep playing this well.

FRIDAY FEELS

Did I mention I got engaged? I did? Ok, well, let’s do Rings for things I’d like to marry and Dings for things that need a little tune up.

RING: Gabe Landeskog Skating at Practice

I mean, It’s happening, right?!?! He’s coming back?!!?! He’s travelling with the team now, and I’m melting at home - this is honestly incredible, one of the best stories in all of sports this year AND it’s happening to a guy we’re emotionally invested in. How can anything get a bigger ring than Gabe?? It can’t.

Gabe Landeskog is on the ice for Avs practice today. pic.twitter.com/LkUnmwL2qu

— Jesse Montano (@jessemontano_) March 17, 2025

And look, I know there’s a chance he can’t stay in the lineup after he gives it a go. I don’t care - if I can get one shift of Gabriel Landeskog in 2025 I can go into my marriage knowing miracles can happen and good things come to those we love. If he doesn’t play, I guess the wedding’s off (don’t tell my fiancée I said that either).

DING: Nathan Mackinnon on the Wing

Over the last couple games Coach Jared Bednar has experimented with a Nichushkin - Nelson - MacKinnon line combo and I frankly hate it. I don’t mind throwing that trio out for an offensive zone faceoff or just to get a spark for a shift here or there, but as a fixture of a gameplan I don’t get it. The cascading effect on the rest of the lineup is not good - it forces Charlie Coyle up to 2C, Jack Drury up to 3C, and shifts Parker Kelly from 4LW (where he’s looked AWESOME by the way) to 4C. All of those guys are then playing slightly over their heads and for what? To give Nelson a play driving right wing? Martin Necas is sitting right there on the bench for that!

I’m not surprised the game where they put Necas on Nelson’s wing and moved MacKinnon back to centering Jonathan Drouin and Nuke they put up 4 goals in the first period. That’s a top six deployment you dream about. Stick with that, Coach!

RING: Scott Wedgewood

Just him. He’s good. So very very good.

That ROCKED! And he has a huge save like that one every game he’s played lately. Mackenzie Blackwood is obviously the starter, I’m not trying to spark a goalie controversy here, but in spot starts as a backup Wedgewood has been awesome and I’d marry him for it.

DING: Kelly Sutherland

I mean, we have to laugh at this because it’s stupid and funny but also I hate it.

Give Kelly Sutherland an assist on the Lorentz goal here, what a wacky sequence #LeafsForever | #GoAvsGo

Predictions

I took too much time off to keep my running tally alive, so let’s forget the past and just focus on next week’s games. I might have to predict wins every night at this point because the team is so effing good right now - defensively, they’ve given up almost nothing to some very good teams lately while outpossessing and outchancing almost everyone they’ve played - so I’ll get more specific to spice things up:

Saturday @ Montreal: 4-2 W, points from Brock Nelson and Sam Malinski
Tuesday vs Detroit: 3-1 W, at least one Ryan Lindgren assist
Thursday vs Los Angeles: 5-4 W, goals from Joel Kiviranta and Ross Colton

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Montreal Canadiens (5:00 p.m. MT)

Montreal Canadiens v Colorado Avalanche

It’s another Colorado Avalanche gameday!

After playing a back-to-back against Toronto and Ottawa, the Colorado Avalanche finishes their little three-game trip tonight as they take on the Montreal Canadiens. This will be the second and final matchup between these two teams for the regular season.

The Avalanche look to finish the Canadian road trip with a victory over the Habs!#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/Q9897ZxgmF

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) March 22, 2025

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs come into this game off a big game against the Ottawa Senators, which saw them win by a final score of 5-1. After an unlucky outcome against Toronto, the performance against Ottawa was exactly the one that you wanted Colorado to have in response to that outcome.

Tonight, they look to end this little road trip on a high note against the Montreal Canadiens, who have won six of their last ten games, and currently occupy the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Projected lineup

Jonathan Drouin - Nathan MacKinnon - Valeri Nichushkin
Artturi Lehkonen - Brock Nelson - Martin Necas
Joel Kiviranta - Charlie Coyle - Ross Colton
Parker Kelly - Jack Drury - Logan O’Connor

Devon Toews - Cale Makar
Ryan Lindgren - Sam Malinski
Keaton Middleton - Erik Johnson

Montreal Canadiens

As previously mentioned, the Montreal Canadiens have been rolling a bit as of late, as they’ve won six out of their last ten games and currently occupy the second wild card spot in the East. Given how many teams are currently pushing to make the playoffs in that conference currently, the Habs will certainly be keen on winning tonight to help them secure a playoffs spot.

Projected Lineup

Cole Caufield - Nick Suzuki - Juraj Slafkovsky
Joshua Roy - Alex Newhook - Patrik Laine
Josh Anderson - Christian Dvorak - Brendan Gallagher
Emil Heineman - Jake Evans - Joel Armia

Mike Matheson - Alexandre Carrier
Jayden Struble - Lane Hutson
Arber Xhekaj - David Savard

Goaltenders

For Colorado, Mackenzie Blackwood will likely be going in net tonight, since Scott Wedgewood got the last game against Ottawa. Blackwood was pretty solid against Toronto, with both goals against coming off of some incredibly unlucky bounces. Sam Montembeault will likely get the start across from Blackwood.

Recap: Brock Nelson’s shootout tally wins it, the Avalanche survive the Canadiens

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Montreal Canadiens

David Kirouac-Imagn Images

The Avalanche had a commanding 4-1 lead entering the third period, but it nearly came unglued.

Tour De Canada ended with Montreal madness, but the Colorado Avalanche overcame a rough third period to escape Bell Centre with a 5-4 victory Saturday night.

The Avalanche entered the third period with a commanding 4-1 advantage until the Canadiens nailed Colorado with a three-spot to even things up before the end of regulation. After a scoreless overtime period, Brock Nelson scored the shootout-winning goal to give his team the victory. He also scored earlier in the game while Sam Malinski, Martin Nečas, and Ryan Lindgren each lit the lamp for the Avs. Mackenzie Blackwood also recorded the 100th win of his NHL career.

First Period

The Avalanche were red hot from the onset, firing a conglomeration of shots on Montreal netminder Sam Montembeault, who made some solid saves and stoned a series of rebounds. But 7:35 into the period, his lucky charm went out the window when Kiviranta fed Sam Malinski a one-timer, and the 26-year-old ripped it into the back of the net to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. It was Malinski’s third goal of the season. Then 2:34 later, the Avalanche made it 2-0 when Ryan Lindgren snapped one by Montembeault.

Beautiful team goal here! #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/cyZM5uTylY

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) March 22, 2025

Nichushkin had a chance to give Colorado a 3-0 advantage in the closing stages of the first, but just as he tried to get his stick on a loose puck in front of a wide-open net, Montembeault was somehow able to deny him with the stick.

Second Period

To start, 2:46 into the second period, Keaton Middleton and Arber Xhekaj dropped the gloves. That seemed to pump both sides as offensive opportunities began to open up. After Juraj Slafkovsky was whistled for jumping on the ice too soon, the Avalanche capitalized on the power play when Drouin found Nečas, and the latter shoveled it in from the backdoor for his 24th goal of the season. That 3-0 lead, however, quickly became 3-1. Twenty-seven seconds later, Slafkovsky rebounded from his earlier miscue and re-directed a shot from Jayden Struble right by Blackwood.

MARTY!! #GoAvsGopic.twitter.com/BCV066tDcA

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) March 23, 2025

The goal shifted momentum in Montreal’s direction. As they approached the 10-minute mark, the Canadiens had outshot the Avs 7-2 in the period. Miles Wood was also penalized for tripping during this timeframe, but his teammates were able to kill off the penalty successfully.

It became a penalty fest in the late stages. Both teams got in a scrum behind the Montreal net. Charlie Coyle was penalized for cross-checking Struble, and both Josh Anderson and Ross Colton were sent to the box after both men potshot one another with a pair of right hands. Just under a minute after that and following a delay, Toews was boxed for hooking Lane Hutson, putting Montreal on a critical 5-on-3 power play. The shenanigans continued with nearly two minutes left to play in the period when Mike Matheson and MacKinnon were both boxed for a series of transgressions. Matheson was dinged for roughing against MacKinnon, while the latter was also sentenced for high-sticking his counterpart.

Third Period

First, 3:58 into the final period, Nelson scored his third goal in his past two games when he re-directed a shot from Toews, who let it fly from the left corner of the blue line. Nelson was in perfect position for the tip and it landed top shelf for the goal. For Nelson, it was his 23rd goal of the season.

With 10:36 left in the game, the Canadiens got their second goal of the contest when Joshua Roy poked a rebound by Blackwood to make it a 4-2 game. Former Av Alex Newhook got the play going by splitting the defense and making a spin-o-rama move to get the initial shot off before Roy saved the day. Thirty seconds later, Montreal cut the deficit to one when Slafkovsky snapped a wrister by Blackwood. And just when you thought Colorado would easily escape Tour De Canada, Montreal said, “Not so fast.”

And indeed, the Canadiens weren’t done. Christian Dvorak skated in and fired a backhander over Blackwood’s glove with 6:28 to go to tie the game at four.

With the score tied at four at the end of regulation, both sides went to overtime.

Overtime

Slavkovsky was penalized with 2:25 remaining in the overtime period for holding Makar. Despite heavy pressure from the Avalanche offense, Montembeault came up big in the net to send the game into a shootout.

Shootout

Nelson scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give Colorado the win. Charlie Coyle also scored in the shootout. Montreal’s Patrik Laine scored for his club in the shootout, but it was not enough.

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 23, 2025

Takeaways

Well, we got away with one there. The Avs played great hockey until the third period, but nothing beats adversity like overcoming it. The bottom line is that we won the game and can address how to prevent this collapse in practice. Like the last game, Nelson is starting to gel with this team. Devon Toews played a great game, and credit to the guys for sticking with it even when the game erupted into a penalty fest. We could have gotten ourselves into a lot of bad situations had we continued the cycle. As for the Canadiens, it was a well-played, hard-fought game. This game was old-school hockey, and it was a pleasure to watch. If they can build around the guys they have now, this Canadiens team will be a Stanley Cup threat in the future. They have a plethora of fresh, fast guys that can take over a game, and we’ll see how they do in the future.

Next Game

The Avalanche (45-25-3) return to the ice Tuesday at Ball Arena to face Patrick Kane and the Detroit Red Wings (32-30-6). Puck drop is at 7 p.m. local time.

Opinion: Analytics used to disqualify Makar are easily explained

Colorado Avalanche v Toronto Maple Leafs

Makar’s the world’s best defender, despite what the critiques say.

The emergence of analytics has been a pleasant step into the modern realm for hockey and the NHL, but sometimes, numbers can be found or explicitly conjured to demote a player. Agh numbers. Mathematics is about understanding, but you don’t need math to know Makar is the world's best defender, and although numbers paint a picture, you need to know the artist to see the beauty and brush strokes truly. That’s what Makar is, a hockey artist, the likes of which we’ve only seen a few other times in history.

This is NOT Norris posting.

This still baffles me. Was the case in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Pre- and post-deadline. Every level of competition. Every score state. Same zone starts. I just want to know why this is happening. pic.twitter.com/Ze131Pmfr9

— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) March 18, 2025

Fresh to death

This whole debate started when JFresh brought about some super interesting thoughts and conversations due to this initial tweet in which he displays numbers that depict a relatively odd occurrence. Over the 1 3⁄4 season, Colorado is better when both Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon are off the ice than when just MacKinnon is off. That’s a mouthful, but to put it plainly, Colorado’s bottom nine players play better without Cale (when MacKinnon is also off) than they do with him.

it's looking like i'm gonna be the only one this year wringing his hands over how bad makar's results are without mackinnon on the ice. ah well. hughes is my guy so far https://t.co/G6i0X8gQ1M pic.twitter.com/45xbOZ9HoK

— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) December 10, 2024

This trend has stuck around longer than I thought it would, but let’s really think about this Avalanche team and the last two seasons and see what could give us the context to explain these statistics.

Mercenary Mountain

My first contributing factor to this is the grotesque revolving door that has been the Colorado Avalanche bottom nine group. To put things in perspective, here’s a list of all the different forwards who have seen action for the Avalanche over the past two seasons:

Colorado’s forwards from the 2023-24 & 2024-25 seasons.

If you remove the prominent top liners like Rantanen, Necas, Nichushkin, and Drouin, a whopping 37 different forwards will still make up the bottom nine. It goes without explaining that consistency is key, even more valid for defenders.

Cale Makar is undoubtedly more familiar and keen on playing with MacKinnon, Nichushkin, and Necas, but that’s not how it works. Cale contributes to every situation, including (up until Erik Johnson’s arrival) penalty kill. He also matches up against every team's best line and power play unit, but I’m not allowed to discuss matchups!

I have some theories.

1) The Avalanche have suited 45+ different players just this season and even more over the window you have put forth. Most of which (until recently) have come and gone in said bottom nine. That turnover leads to lack of familiarity and cohesion which… https://t.co/h6jorkgowb

Elite with the elite

The other thing with this revolving door of the bottom 9 is the names that have made up said group. Often, at times, it’s been guys that are fringe NHLers or downright players that should be in the AHL. I shouldn't have to explain why or how Makar would be more suited to playing with A, a more consistent group, and B, a group of actual NHL talent.

Colorado has had injury problems for two straight seasons, forcing the Avalanche to suit 47 players in just the 2024-25 season. We have a running joke on the Mile High Hockey Lab that they should do all they can to dress 50 different players before the season ends.

Here’s a racing analogy. Makar is F1. Colorado’s bottom nine forwards have been more truck series for two straight seasons. The two don’t go well together, but that doesn’t make the F1 car any slower or less capable.

I think I've figured this out, with the help of observant fans in the replies.

The answer - mostly - comes down to MacKinnon's habit of going off for a change on the fly and leaving Makar on the ice in a disadvantageous position. https://t.co/akDNqDFNOm pic.twitter.com/pbr2TRgBS4

Makar4Norris

To disqualify Makar because he’s better with MacKinnon (just like absolutely anyone else on the planet) amid this abhorrent wave of injuries and turnover is just irresponsible, in my opinion. Makar could put up 30 goals in a season and has played through his injuries all season. To give this award to Quinn Hughes would be to award him as the second-best defender in the world “because he plays without MacKinnon.” Hughes also plays without some of Makar’s ability.

Thanks to JFresh for his hard work and analysis! I respectfully disagree with the initial tweet, but we all know the Colorado Avalanche are his second favorite team. Cheers!

Recap: Avalanche cruise to 5-2 win over Red Wings

NHL: Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche

Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

Another great start to a homestand.

Following a successful road trip to eastern Canada, the Colorado Avalanche returned home to face the Detroit Red Wings. Both teams were in search of a win with playoff implications. Colorado carried their momentum from the road and gave a setback to another bubble playoff team in this 5-2 victory.

The Game

It was the visitors who opened the scoring on just their second shot of the game. Old friend JT Compher netted a power play goal at 6:00. The lead was short lived, however, as just 44 seconds later Cale Makar’s point shot deflected off the backside of a Red Wings defenseman and there was some confusion as to if Val Nichushkin gave a light tap to get the puck in the net. Ultimately the goal was credited to Makar but Nichushkin wasn’t done, though, and got his goal back when he pounded home a rare net-front goal at 12:54 to give Colorado the lead.

After a cautious start to the second period for both teams the Avalanche cashed in on a power play from Devon Toews at 4:39. That put the Avalanche up 3-1 and that’s how the second period ended with Colorado comfortably in the lead.

To punctuate the win, Nathan MacKinnon got in on the action at 8:34 with a power play goal of his own. Austin Watson got Detroit within two at 16:53 but Logan O'Connor fresh off a scratch quickly erased and momentum with an empty net goal at 17:56. It was a pretty easy 5-2 win for Colorado when all said and done.

Takeaways

Colorado continues to be trouble for teams on the playoff bubble and Detroit was the latest victim. Even though the game wasn’t as lopsided as previous affairs with a 28-23 shot advantage for Colorado, it’s the fact that it is difficult to take momentum away from them when they have it.

Sam Girard was somewhat of a surprise returning to the lineup after a two-game absence while Erik Johnson sat out the contest. Recalled Jacob MacDonald didn’t play nor get added to the lengthy list of players suited up for the Avalanche this season but there’s still time to reach 50. Girard was able to take his usual minutes and role, so hopefully what ails him isn’t a concern moving forward.

Upcoming

A date with the LA Kings on Thursday, March 27th at 8:00 p.m. MT.

It’s another Colorado Avalanche game day!

After finishing up a three-game road trip through Canada, the Colorado Avalanche return home tonight to take on the Detroit Red Wings. This will be the second and final regular-season matchup between these two teams, with Colorado winning the first one by a final score of 2-1.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs come into this game off a shootout win against the Montreal Canadiens, securing another two crucial points in the standings. Brock Nelson was the one to ultimately end it in that game, scoring his third goal in the last three games.

Nelson, and the other new editions for that matter, look to finally be settling in and finding their footing with Colorado, which is exactly what you want and need to see from them at this time of year. With playoffs right around the corner, that runway for them to find their footing is running out bit by bit.

Projected Lineup

Jonathan Drouin - Nathan MacKinnon - Valeri Nichushkin
Artturi Lehkonen - Brock Nelson - Martin Necas
Joel Kiviranta - Charlie Coyle - Ross Colton
Miles Wood - Jack Drury - Jimmy Vesey

Devon Toews - Cale Makar
Ryan Lindgren - Sam Malinski
Sam Girard - Keaton Middleton

Detroit Red Wings

Detroit comes into this game tonight on the second leg of a back-to-back after securing a big win over the Utah Hockey Club last night.

Despite the season starting to wind down and teams starting to secure playoff sports, the Red Wings remain alive a bit in the wild card race in the Eastern Conference, as they sit just three points back of the second spot. Just like Montreal, whom the Avs just played, every point matters for the Red Wings as well this time of year, and they’ll be eager to grab another two here tonight.

Projected Lineup

Michael Rasmussen - Dylan Larkin - Lucas Raymond
Alex Debrincat - Marco Kasper - Patrick Kane
Elmer Soderblom - JT Compher - Vladimir Tarasenko
Austin Watson - Tyler Motte - Craig Smith

Ben Chiarot - Mortiz Seider
Simon Edvinsson - Jeff Petry
Albert Johansson - Justin Holl

Goaltenders

For the Detroit Red Wings, it will likely be Cam Talbot going in net tonight for them, as Alex Lyon got the start against Utah yesterday. For Colorado, Mackenzie Blackwood will likely get the start here tonight.

Colorado signs two NCAA free agents

Report of Colorado hosting the Rookie Tournament as well.

With the 2025 NCAA 16-team tournament field set that means a lot of players not participating are free to sign contracts and begin their professional careers. This is prime time for the Colorado Avalanche to do their shopping and find players to add as organizational depth to the Colorado Eagles in the fall and to fill out a rookie tournament roster, more on that below.

As such, a couple players inked NHL deals with Colorado including goaltender Isak Posch and left shot winger Cooper Gay. Both are 23-years old meaning they signed a standard two-year Entry Level Contract beginning in the 2025-26 season. The two players also hail from collegiate programs in Minnesota with Posch from St. Cloud State and Gay an alumn of St. Thomas. Gay is a familiar face to the organization as he attended development camp in 2024 but was not ice due to injury.

The signing news was also followed by a report from the LA Kings insider, Mayors Manor, that the Avalanche will host a portion of the Rookie Faceoff in September welcoming the prospects of Utah and Vegas. Meanwhile, the California teams are expected to play their games in Anaheim.

Apparently Colorado was set to host again for the first time since they hosted the 2016 inaugural tournament but it was determined they don’t have enough facility space for the entire six-team group. Still, thankfully they plan to utilize the new South Suburban Complex and not Family Sports Center. No details on dates, times or how the public can access these games yet but it should fall on the weekend of September 12-15.

Putting on the event is costly and takes a considerable amount of time and team resources. As such, it was decided that the event will be split this year. Colorado will now host the Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club in a three-team format at South Suburban Sports Complex in Littleton.
