A clash of playoff hopefuls after dark on ESPN.

As the homestand continues, the Colorado Avalanche welcome in a formidable foe as the LA Kings are also trying to secure the second seed in their division and have been the only team hotter than Colorado. The two teams will meet again before the end of the regular season, making for an interesting mini playoff matchup. Colorado took their first meeting 4-2 back in November and will look to repeat those results.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche hoping to sweep another homestand are expecting to put out largely the same lineup as the one that beat Detroit a couple nights ago. Erik Johnson was a participant at morning skate but is not ready to draw back into the lineup on the blueline. Joel Kiviranta, who has a lower-body injury will be replaced by Miles Wood.

Projected Lineup

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin

Lehkonen - Nelson - Necas

Wood - Coyle - Colton

Kelly - Drury - O’Connor

Toews - Makar

Girard - Middleton

Lindgren - Malinski

LA Kings

The Kings have quietly had a surge of late going 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and have overtaken the Edmonton Oilers for second in the Pacific division. Mixing youth with veterans has been the winning formula for the Kings who are also receiving solid goaltending from old friend Darcy Kuemper.

Projected Lineup

Kuzmenko – Kopitar – Kempe

Foegele – Danault – Moore

Fiala – Byfield – Laferriere

Jeannot – Helenius – Lewis

Anderson – Doughty

Gavrikov – Spence

Edmundson – Clarke

Goaltenders

Both starters are expected to take the net for this national tv affair, meaning Darcy Kuemper for the Kings and MacKenzie Blackwood for the Avalanche.

Recap: Avalanche ride opportunistic middle period to shutout win over Kings

NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

The Avs extend their league-best home win streak to 11 games.

The Aval-wagon is rolling along!

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night by a final score of 4-0. While the Avs did not have their A-game in this contest, they were opportunistic in the second period, finding three goals on a measly five shots, showcasing this team’s ability to strike at any given moment.

Los Angeles entered tonight’s contest on a roll of their own. Winners of nine of their previous 10 games, the Kings are getting hot just in time as well, for what is going to be a gauntlet of a Western Conference playoff action come April.

The Kings didn’t have the juice to hang with Colorado tonight, despite showing at even strength what makes them a legitimate factor in the West this season. They boast a deep forward group, a respectable defense corps, but made a questionable decision to keep starter, and former Avs goaltender Darcy Kuemper on the bench tonight.

First Period

The first period got off to a little bit of a slow start, but there was no doubt about the compete level of either team out of the gate. The Kings seemed to favor a slower pace to open the game up, looking to slow down the high-tempo Avs on home ice. This philosophy worked well for Los Angeles, as they were able to maintain a low shot total in the early going, and the Kings would be rewarded with the first powerplay of the evening, after an Artturi Lehkonen cross-checking penalty.

The Kings were unable to record a shot on the powerplay, and Lehkonen put a stamp on the kill when he sat down Kings forward Alex Laferriere with an open ice hit straight out of the penalty box.

Following the kill, momentum picked up in favor of the Avalanche. Nathan MacKinnon had an explosive skate for a scoring chance, but the puck trickled the wrong way past David Rittich, allowing for a Kings defenseman to clear the goalmouth.

The Avs would have a minor scare, as a high shot struck Defenseman Cale Makar in his arm and had him shaken up on the bench. He would remain in the game, however.

Colorado received their first powerplay following a holding penalty against Kings forward Phil Danault, and almost had a goal on the stick of Jonathan Drouin, who opted to pass out of a prime shooting opportunity with an open net.

The Kings would get a gift of a penalty in the final seconds of the period, after a soft cross-checking call on MacKinnon sent the Avs to the kill with three seconds to go. The teams skated into the intermission scoreless, but the Kings would have an opportunity with a fullish powerplay to open the second period. The Avs dominated shots in the opening frame at 14-6, but lacked a step in their game.

Second Period

Much like the first period powerplay the Kings had, their man advantage to open the second frame lacked much danger. The Avs penalty kill has continued its upwards trajectory after a dismal start to the season, and through two kills, the Avs had the Kings loaded powerplay looking very pedestrian.

This did not result in a quick start to the Period for the Avs however, as they failed to record a shot on net in the opening five minutes of the period.

They made their first two shots count though.

Following an extended period of possession for the Avs, the legs of Cale Makar produced some magic. With Kings defenseman Joel Edmundson draped all over him, Makar shieled the puck from the blueline to the high slot, where he was able to slide a puck towards Logan O’Connor, who sent it towards the net, and found a hole through goaltender David Rittich for the 1-0 Avalanche lead.

That move from Cale Makar??? That goal from Logan O'Connor???

Moments later, a point shot from Samuel Girard missed left of the Kings cage, and came to rest behind the net. Martin Necas dug the puck towards the netfront from the side of the post, and was able to slide it across the goal line before Rittich could stretch his pad over. Just like that, two shots on net, two Avs goals.

Later in the frame, chaos would ensue in front of the Avs net. Quinton Byfield nearly put Mackenzie Blackwood on a highlight reel, but was unable to sneak the puck past the posts. As the puck rested in the crease, Warren Foegele took a whack at the open net, only to be denied by the skate of Devon Toews.

Don't worry, we didn't forget about this play from Devon #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/h1MhTTCAYt

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 28, 2025

While gliding through, Foegele barreled over Blackwood, which sent the Avs to the man advantage. On the powerplay, Necas would rocket home his second goal of the contest, lasering a Makar feed into the back of the net to stretch the lead to 3-0.

He was ready for that #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/bN69IG2dPL

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 28, 2025

The Avs took that 3-0 lead into the dressing room, doing so on only 5 shots on goal in the middle frame. While this was not necessarily the effort thus far from the Avalanche we’re accustomed to, these opportunistic periods are necessary for postseason success, and it’s encouraging to see this out of the Avalanche.

Third Period:

The third period was a very fundamental shut-it-down period for the Avs, as they were content to just sit on their lead. There was not much of an attempt to establish zone time, especially early in the final frame, but LA was struggling to generate much with the space the Avs were giving them.

In the middle of the period, MacKinnon was tripped up while going for a skate in the offensive zone, and sent the Avs to a garbage time powerplay.

Head Coach Jared Bednar sent the second unit out, but the group was unable to find a goal. Moments after the top unit stepped on the ice, Necas found MacKinnon in the zone, MacKinnon zipped the puck back across the ice to Jonathan Drouin, who shot the puck on the powerplay this time around. It was a rocket that Rittich could not catch up to, putting a stamp on the 4-0 Avs victory.

Key Takeaways:

  • This Avalanche team was rejuvenated by the moves made by Chris MacFarland. Now 24 games removed from the Mikko Rantanen trade, the Avs are 17-6-1, can roll four forward lines confidently, and look like a serious favorite for the Stanley Cup once again. You’d be hard-pressed to find a weakness in this group at their best.
  • Martin Necas continues to shine following the Rantanen trade that rooted him from Carolina. Following his two goal, three point performance tonight, he has 10 goals and 25 points in the burgundy and blue. In my mind, he was Colorado’s best skater tonight. The Marty Party has been a fun ride so far!
  • Mackenzie Blackwood posted his fourth shutout of the season tonight, and now has three shutouts since joining the Avalanche following the December goalie swap with the San Jose Sharks. This comes as his first shutout since posting consecutive shutouts from Jan. 31 — Feb. 2 against the St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers, and all three of his Avalanche shutouts have come on home ice.

Next Matchup:

The Avalanche (46-25-3) will look to keep humming along on home ice as they welcome in the St. Louis Blues (39-28-7) for the third of four matchups between the two clubs this season. The Blues are currently on a massive eight winning streak that has revived their playoff hopes, so this should be a heated matchup between two bitter rivals.

Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m. MT on Saturday, March 29th.

Friday Feels: The Thankless Case of Mackenzie Blackwood

NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

The Avs #1 Goalie has been good, yet somehow fans have drummed up a goalie controversy? Why?

I experienced something last week that I think Mackenzie Blackwood can relate to lately, and it’s all because of you Avalanche fans. Last week in my column I told y’all I got engaged, and not one of you congratulated me for it. Too Late! Don’t come at me with congrats messages now! That ship has sailed.

Mackenzie Blackwood probably knows the feeling - the deep despair of a fanbase not giving you your flowers when you clearly deserve them. Despite posting a .919 save percentage, a 2.15 goals against average, and a 21-8 record in Avalanche burgundy and blue, a couple great games from career backup Scott Wedgewood led fans to drum up a starting goaltender controversy out of nowhere. It’s unconscionable.

stats from statmuse.com

stats from statmuse.com

Like me sitting at my desk reading the comments on last week’s article looking for just one reader to say something like ‘congrats on the engagement btw,’ ‘nice job getting engaged bro,’ or ‘marriage is gonna rock my dawg,’ I have to assume Blackwood spent last week recovering from an illness that caused him to miss a game and some practices scrolling Avs twitter and reddit seeing post after post, comment after comment suggesting that maybe Wedgewood should be the starter for the playoffs thinking ‘don’t these people have any respect? Can’t they see Wedgie is great in managed matchups but doesn’t have the starting netminder bonafides I do? Why didn’t they congratulate Ezra on his engagement like I did?’

It’s just unreasonable, folks. Blackwood shut out the LA Kings last night and that hopefully quieted the haters, but if you’re considering still voicing this ludicrous idea that Wedgewood should take over the net, just look at the advanced stats:

Goals Saved Above Expected per game: Blackwood .344, Wedgewood .113
Goals Against Average Over Expected Goals: Blackwood .34, Wedgewood .11
High Danger Save Percentage Over Expected: Blackwood .114, Wedgewood .076
Wins Above Replacement: Blackwood 2.80, Wedgewood .35

Ok? I know these numbers without context are maybe hard to read, but anyone can tell Blackwood’s are all higher and that’s good - plus, the raw data doesn’t even consider that Wedgewood mostly gets the easier matchups, the first half of back to backs, and isn’t tasked with consecutive starts very often.

Look, Wedgewood’s a very good backup and he’s made some very acrobatic highlight reel saves of late that make the idea of him getting more starts seem fun and right, but the simple truth is Blackwood is a better goalie. There is no goalie controversy here.

The only controversy is why Avs fans can’t give seem to give love to people like Mackenzie and I, who work so hard for them.

FRIDAY FEELS

Love a week full of wins! Let’s do Wins and Fails - and yeah, of course the biggest fail was you all not congratulating me.

Win: Goals EVERYWHERE

Ooh man if you like offense, you like the Colorado Avalanche this week. 14 total tallies in three games, from all over the lineup. Martin Necas led the way with 3, Logan O’Connor had 2, and 9 other guys put pucks in the net this week. That’s balance. That’s power.

Win: Powerplay on Fire!

Both powerplay units even got on the board! Over three games, the Avs PP scored 5 goals on seven chances. That’s absurd production, but continues a trend lately - Colorado’s powerplay has been scoring at a near 50% pace in 2025, all while working in new players and evolving strategies that come with different pieces fitting together.

Jonathan Drouin blasts one home, and Nathan MacKinnon has extended his home point streak to 23 games! : @espn ➡️ http://plus.espn.com

NHL (Bot) (@notnhl.bsky.social) 2025-03-28T04:30:10.645Z

Fail: Defense Injuries

Losing defenders to injury was literally my only fear with the Avs roster post-trade deadline and lo and behold it happened almost immediately. Josh Manson went down, then Sam Girard and Erik Johnson. Girard is already back and EJ seems to be close, thankfully. Colorado needs some health luck in the postseason, especially on the blueline where asking too much of Keaton Middleton and Sam Malinski (who y’all already know I love) feels very risky.

Win: Keaton Middleton’s possession metrics!

He may be a guy I’m very nervous to see in the playoffs, but Middleton rocked this week. Despite a wild series of errant passes in the Detroit game that had me cackling, he posted the best Corsi For % among Avs defenders in both the Montreal and LA games — not what you expect from the big rugged D-man. On top of that, he led the defense in Expected Goals For % against the Habs and Wings, and allowed only three high danger chances across the three games AND played two whole minutes shorthanded without surrendering even one shot on goal. Maybe - just maybe - he could be ready for prime time after all.

PREDICTIONS

Well I certainly nailed the three wins! And I got the Malinski and Nelson points against the Canadiens - on the first two goals of the game, no less. I was also right that the Detroit game would be the least close finish, but that wasn’t a tough guess. I also had A game finishing 5-4, just not the right one — I was sure the Kings would be a tougher matchup than the Habs, but Montreal nearly rallied back and LA barely even showed up. Hockey is hard to predict! Let’s try again:

Saturday vs. St. Louis: 5-2 W, PK gives up no goals
Monday vs. Calgary: 6-1 W, at least 3 points from Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon
Wednesday @ Chicago: 2-0 W, Wedgewood makes less than 25 saves
Thursday @ Columbus: 4-3 W, goals from Malinski and Charlie Coyle

Preview: Avs take on the Blues in a Matinee Matchup

Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues

Who will have their win streak snapped?

After beating the Los Angeles Kings by a final score of 4-0 on Thursday night, and extending their win streak to four games, the Colorado Avalanche take on the St. Louis Blues today in a matinee game. This will be the third of four regular-season matchups between these two teams, with each team having previously won a game.

Colorado Avalanche

As previously mentioned, the Colorado Avalanche are coming off of a win against the LA Kings, winning by a final score of 4-0. Mackenzie Blackwood posted his fourth shutout of the season in that game, and Martin Necas scored twice as well to help Colorado secure their fourth win in a row. Erik Johnson might possibly draw into the lineup but we’ll have to wait until warmups.

Now, they welcome the St. Louis Blues to Denver for a matinee matchup. This is an incredibly important game for both teams, as Colorado is looking to continue their win streak, and the Blues are looking to continue their push toward the playoffs.

Projected Lineup

Jonathan Drouin - Nathan MacKinnon - Valeri Nichushkin
Artturi Lehkonen - Brock Nelson - Martin Necas
Miles Wood - Charlie Coyle - Ross Colton
Parker Kelly - Jack Drury - Logan O’Connor

Devon Toews - Cale Makar
Ryan Lindgren - Sam Malinski
Samuel Girard - Keaton Middleton

St. Louis Blues

The Blues have won eight games straight coming into this matchup with the Avs, and have found themsevles in the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. While they do currently have a four point lead on the Vancouver Canucks, they are still looking to add to that lead to hopefully secure that second wild card spot as we get closer to the playoffs.

Projected Lineup

Jake Neighbours - Brayden Schenn - Pavel Buchnevich
Dylan Holloway - Robert Thomas - Jordan Kyrou
Mathieu Joseph - Oskar Sundqvist - Zack Bolduc
Alexey Toropchenko - Radek Faksa - Alexandre Texier

Philip Broberg - Justin Faulk
Cam Fowler - Nick Leddy
Ryan Suter - Tyler Tucker

Goaltenders

For today’s game, the goalie matchup will likely be Mackenzie Blackwood against Jordan Binnington. Blackwood comes into this game off of a shutout against the LA Kings, as previously mentioned, and Binnington comes into this game of of a stretch of really solid play as the Blues have made a push to end up in the playoffs. Blackwood will need to play just as well as he did last game to secure the win here this afternoon.

Recap: Third period penalties too much for Avs as Blues skate away with 2-1 win

St Louis Blues v Colorado Avalanche

Photo by Michael Martin/NHLI via Getty Images

The Avalanche see their home win streak snapped at 11 games.

The Colorado Avalanche were defeated by the St. Louis Blues Saturday afternoon by a final score of 2-1. While the atmosphere on the ice was somewhat reminiscent of a playoff atmosphere, the Avs were unable to take control of the game at any point in time. The Blues had a clear mission to suppress the Avs speed all contest, and a third period parade to the penalty box, combined with numerous scoring opportunities sent wide posed too much for the Avs to overcome tonight.

The Blues showcased how and why they’ve re-emerged in the playoff race, and despite the frustrations with third period officiating from the Avs, the Blues made it very difficult for the Avs to establish their game.

First Period:

Things almost got started right away offensively for the Avs. Just over a minute into action, Nathan MacKinnon was sprung for a mini breakaway at the Blues blueline, but he rang the post with his shot after beating Jordan Binnington to his low glove.

This didn’t result in a relentless attack from the Avs however, as the Blues were able to hold strong, and ultimately control the contest early in the opening period. The Blues hadn’t done anything very dangerous with the puck, but against the Avs, possession matters. The less the Avs have the puck, the more the Blues could dictate the pace of play, as they aren’t looking to skate with the Avs at top speed.

Just under midway through the frame, Jack Drury had the puck roll on him during a clearing attempt, and he sent it right over the glass for a delay of game penalty. On the ensuing powerplay, some efficient puck movement from the Blues top powerplay set up emerging rookie Zack Bolduc for a one-time blast, that Mackenzie Blackwood had no chance to catch up to. The Blues broke the ice on the scoresheet, and the Avs had some work to do.

Power play goal for St. Louis!

Just over a minute later, the Avs top line was able to establish a breakout with a successful entry into the Blues zone. Once there, the Avs passing was not crisp, but the puck found a way to bounce right to the stick of MacKinnon, who rifled a wrister into an open net. Just 72 seconds after the Blues goal, the Avs were back to a 1-1 tie.

Another point at home for the Dogg.#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/rM4mhxFFeY

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 29, 2025

In the dying seconds of the period, the Avs were able to establish another top line shift in the Blues zone, with Cale Makar showing off the legs he brought into this afternoon’s contest. With about four seconds to go at the top of the zone, Samuel Girard failed to control a Makar pass, and the Blues were able to clear the puck to end the period.

While not the most thrilling action for the fans in the building, the feeling on the ice emulated that of a playoff game. The first period didn’t lack the chippy nature these two teams typically approach each other with. The Blues did a good job of limiting the speed the Avs want to play with and the Avs needed to find another step coming out for the second period.

Second Period:

Much like the first frame, the Blues seemingly had more legs coming out of the locker room. They still weren’t posing much fear with what they were doing to the puck, but at this point the gameplan was clear; slow the game down.

Following a couple shots a piece early in the middle frame, there would be an 11-plus minute stretch of action in this period where neither team were able to produce a shot on goal. While it was not for a lack of trying from either side, there was little space on the ice for either team to make a play.

The Avs slowly began to heat up as the clock rolled along, and with just over six minutes to go, Logan O’Connor struck iron for the Avs for the second time in the contest. This continued the stretch of no shots on goal for either side, until about two minutes later, when Sam Malinski was tripped up by a Blues defender in the corner. The Avs had an opportunity to break the tie late in the second on the man advantage, against a Blues squad who currently rank in the bottom five of the NHL in penalty kill percentage.

The top unit was not able to do much with the zone time they had on the powerplay. One quality shot, that Binnington surprisingly threw back into play with his glove, resulting in a sneaky clear for the Blues penalty kill. The second powerplay unit hopped over the boards, and Ross Colton nearly had the tiebreaker on his stick. He stepped into a slapshot, and was robbed by Binnington.

Besides this chance, there was not much to speak about in the middle period. The two rivals skated into the dressing room knotted up at one goal a piece, and there was no telling which side was going to come out on top.

Third Period:

Early into the period, Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist laid a big hit on Colton behind the Blues net, and Colton responded with a blindside shoulder in the neutral zone, which sent the Ave to the first of three kills in the opening half of the third period. While perhaps a soft call given the temperature of the game, Colton needed to keep his cool and avoid blindside retaliation.

The Avs killed the penalty, but moments after were sent right back to the kill, this time controversially. While speeding in from behind to break up a scoring chance for Radek Faksa, MacKinnon tied up the stick of Faksa inwards towards the two. Faksa seemingly tripped over himself, and MacKinnon was penalized for tripping.

The Avs killed this one off as well, but shortly after Martin Necas turned the puck over in the neutral zone, and the Blues capitalized moments later. A point shot found its way through to Blackwood, who was unable to clean up the rebound. Pavel Buchnevich, who was all over Blackwood in front of the crease shoveled home the second opportunity and broke the tie for the Blues.

— St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) March 29, 2025

While a majority of the building felt a make-up call should be coming Colorado’s way, Sam Malinski was instead penalized for high sticking, which sent the Avs to the penalty kill for a third time in the opening half of the period.

On this kill, Blackwood made a huge glove save on Bolduc to keep the Avs in reach of the tie. The Avs killed this one, but were left with just under eight minutes to even the score and all momentum sapped.

Frustrations only continued for the Avs with officiating when Bolduc got away with an elbow to the head of Ryan Lindgren on a follow-through after a hit. The hit, which occurred right in front of the Avs bench, sent the group into a frenzy, but this time the officials kept their arms down. There would not be another penalty called in the contest.

— Gino Hard (@GinoHard_) March 29, 2025

With under five minutes to go, the Avs made their final big push. The top six forward lines were able to maintain possession in the Blues zone for a majority of the final minutes. They just weren’t able to hit the net with the majority of their chances in this push, missing the cage from quality scoring opportunities on at least four occasions. The clock ticked down to a 2-1 final score, the Blues extended their winning streak to nine games, and the Avs saw their home win streak snapped at 11 games.

Key Takeaways:

  • While the Avalanche didn’t necessarily play horrible, the top players really laid an egg tonight for the most part. Despite the goal I thought Nathan MacKinnon lacked that extra level in his game, which has been a theme of the last couple weeks. He hasn’t been taking over games with his abilities lately, and with Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov erupting for 12 points in three games this week, MacKinnon went from competing with Leon Draisaitl for the Art Ross two weeks ago, to being in a dogfight (once again) with Kucherov.
  • Conversely, I thought Cale Makar had a good game. His legs looked alive all night, and overall he seemed to be on top of things in all zones. If only he could’ve hit the net on any of his late-game opportunities tonight.
  • The St. Louis Blues are back. When I last wrote about this team in a recap in late February, they were dead in the water. Stuck around a .500 record, they were stuck in between the playoff contenders and the bottom of the league, and approached the March 7th trade deadline as a team with pieces available, but ultimately stood pat on making moves to their NHL roster. With this now nine-game win streak, they find themselves firmly in the West’s final wild card spot, with potential to still catch the Minnesota Wild, and even Colorado if the Avs aren’t careful. These two teams meet for the final time this regular season next week in St. Louis, for what’s sure to be another intense game with playoff implications.

Next Matchup:

The Avalanche (45-26-3) will be back in action on Monday evening, as they wrap up the homestand by welcoming in old friend Nazem Kadri and the Calgary Flames (34-26-11). Like the Blues, the Flames are a desperate hockey club who need every point on the table, as they sit just on the outside of the western conference playoff picture.

Puck drop is slated for 6:30 p.m. MT.

It was a much shorter than anticipated tournament for the Black Bears who arrived on the heels of a Hockey East championship. Maine had an incredible season but were just too inexperienced on the big stage and lost their opening game of the NCAA tournament 5-1 to Penn State. It appeared power forward Taylor Makar scored Maine’s lone goal and the puck bounced around the net front but ultimately the score was given to a teammate.

Now all eyes are on Taylor Makar who is a senior and should look at turning pro after a school switch saw him elevate his production to 30 points and 18 goals in 37 games. At 24-years of age he’s very physically imposing at the college level and should have enough polish to move on to a greater challenge. We’ll see if a NHL contract offer materializes soon what Makar can do next in the Avalanche organization.

Denver Pioneers

The defending champions had a tougher road to the Frozen Four as a lower seed but they handily beat Providence 5-1 in their opening game of the tournament. The next test of number one overall seed Boston College was quite a challenge but after holding on to a tight 2-1 lead DU scored an empty net goal to punch their ticket in the 3-1 victory to St. Louis, Missouri where they will face Western Michigan on April 10th.

A duo of Freshmen from Colorado’s 2024 draft class got their feet wet in the tournament but both played marginal roles and no points in the games they participated in for the Pioneers. Right shot defenseman Tory Pitner got in 38 games this season mostly on the third pair but registered only one assist. Jake Fisher played 40 games and had a little more impact at forward all over the lineup but was on the fourth line for the postseason. Still, he has a good season with 15 points and eight goals. Both players will look for increased roles next season.

Cornell Big Red

It was an upset special for Cornell when they knocked out top seeded Michigan State in their opening game of the tournament in 4-3 fashion. The Big Red had great momentum following their second straight ECAC championship win. Their next big test was Boston University and though Cornell got the powerhouse to overtime it was the Terriers that prevailed 3-2.

Following the footsteps of Matt Stienburg and Sam Malinski as Cornell alums, so is the newest Avalanche hopeful Hank Kampf who came over from the New York Rangers in the Ryan Lindgren trade. The left shot defenseman didn’t record any points in the tournament but wasn’t really expected to, though, with just seven on the year. He, too, is a senior and should be available for the Avalanche to sign should they be interested.

Ohio State Buckeyes

To round out the full Avalanche prospect slate, Chris Romaine’s team Ohio State lost their opening game to the aforementioned Boston University Terriers 8-3. The Buckeyes held up well through two periods but ultimately succumbed to the powerhouse team in the third period.

He’s been in the Avalanche prospect system since his sixth round selection in the 2022 draft, but right shot defenseman Chris Romaine has finally started his NCAA career with Ohio State. Unfortunately he was a scratch in this contest and hasn’t played a game since December. The Freshman only played nine games in the season with zero points, so clearly he will have several more years of collegiate hockey ahead of him.

Breaking: Taylor Makar signs ELC with Colorado Avalanche

Both Makars are now officially signed by Colorado!

After the University of Maine Black Bears were eliminated from the NCAA Frozen Four tournament, the Colorado Avalanche wasted no time. Taylor Makar has officially signed an entry-level contract for the 2025-26 season with the Avalanche. Since the ELC kicks in next season, Makar will finish out the remainder of this season on an amateur try-out, or ATO, with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL. He will join recently signed Cooper Gay in Loveland as well.

We have signed Taylor Makar to a one-year entry-level contract for the 2025-2026 season. pic.twitter.com/G4VAy3wTxj

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 31, 2025

As previously mentioned, Makar just finished his NCAA season at the University of Maine, which resulted in the Black Bears’ run coming to an end at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Frozen Four tournament. In this past season with Maine, Makar finished the season with 30 points in 38 games, totaling 18 goals and 12 assists, which tied him for first on the team in goals.

Due to his age Makar was only eligible to sign a one-year NHL contract, which was a fairly standard offer.

There’s no denying the upside that Makar possesses, and you could certainly see that upside on full display this past season with Maine. With him signing his ELC now, hopefully we’re closer to seeing him and his brother both play for the Avalanche one day.

Recap: Colorado falls to Calgary 3-2 in a shootout

Calgary Flames v Colorado Avalanche

Photo by Michael Martin/NHLI via Getty Images

One team looked desperate to simply have a shot to get into the playoffs and sure played like it in the third period.

The Colorado Avalanche wrapped up a four-game homestand tonight against the Calgary Flames, in which they ultimately lost by a final score of 3-2 in the shootout. Despite an incredible goal from Cale Makar and depth scoring from Logan O’Connor, it wasn’t enough to prevent a third period come back and loss to the Flames.

Let’s take a look back at all the action from tonight.

First Period

While it certainly wasn’t the prettiest of first periods, Colorado still managed to get a one-goal lead in this period, courtesy of a highlight reel individual effort from Cale Makar. On this goal, Makar managed to walk his way down the slot right in front of the Calgary net and made great use of a screen by Jonathan Drouin for his 28th goal of the year.

It's Cale Makar‼️#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/bTYSor8YTn

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) April 1, 2025

Second Period

Logan O’Connor would then get in on the action, as he scored his 10th goal of the season , just by outwaiting Dan Vladar to give Colorado a 2-0 lead. At that point it looked like Colorado was firmly in the driver’s seat of a win especially with a 21-12 shot advantage through two periods.

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) April 1, 2025

Third Period

Calgary would tie this game up at 2-2 in the third period, with back-to-back goals from Ryan Lomberg and Adam Klapka. Lomberg would get the Flames on the board first right as a Ryan Lindgren penalty expired with a net front scramble and some contact on Avalanche netminder Scott Wegewood . Then, 32 seconds later Adam Klapka would take advantage on a neutral zone turnover turned into a 2-on-1, tying the game late into the third period.

Overtime

Calgary had the majority of possession time and then puck-luck on their side, as a Brock Nelson shot trickled through and then sat right on the goal line for Dan Vladar but didn’t go in. Off to a shootout, with Ross Colton, Charlie Coyle and Val Nichushkin failing to convert, Yegor Sharangovich would be the only player between the two teams to ultimately convert in the skills competition, giving the Flames the 3-2 victory.

Takeaways

While giving up a two-goal lead in the third period is frustrating, to say the least, Colorado did still get a point tonight, and Calgary played exactly how you expected them to. They’re a desprate team currently to try and make it into the playoffs, despite how much of a long shot it might be at this point, and they played like a desprate team. Not that Colorado didn’t have anything to play for, but compared to Calgary, Colorado doesn’t have a whole lot to play for at this point in the season given their playoff positioning, while Calgary’s trying to make it to the playoffs. While it’s, again, frustrating to watch this team give up that lead in the third period, personally, I’m not really concerned about this team doing something like this once the playoffs come around. They know how to turn it on and play that style of playoff hockey when it’s needed, right now they just need to finish the regular season strong, which I fully expect they will.

Upcoming

Colorado heads out on the road once again, as they take on the Chicago Blackhawks for the last time this season on Wednesday, April 2. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Colorado Eagles three stars of March

2022 NHL Global Series - Finland - Practice Sessions

Photo by André Ringuette/NHLI via Getty Images

Could Jacob MacDonald be the AHL MVP?

It was another banner month for the Colorado Eagles as they solidified their place at the top of the Pacific Division standings as they head into the last month of AHL regular season play. The squad played a whopping 14 games in the month of March with a 9-4-1 record, which allowed the Eagles to clinch a playoff berth. Unfortunately the last two games on the slate were two losses to Ontario, who are chasing Colorado but the Eagles still maintain a four-point lead on them going into the final eight games of the regular season.

First Star - Jacob MacDonald - 58 GP: 29 G, 24A, 53P

We have a repeat on January’s first star but as the Eagles leading scorer it’s expected that Jacob MacDonald would headline another month. It hasn’t been in the cards to get him back up with the Colorado Avalanche, thankfully not too many injuries on the blueline thus far, but also it feels like he was brought back to provide exactly this for the Eagles. For the month of March the defenseman has scored 15 points including eight goals.

MacDonald is closing in on history as he needs one more goal to tie the record for the most goals by a defenseman in AHL history, a record that was set by John Slaney in 2000. MacDonals also currently leads all defenseman in points as well and power play goals with 13. The 32-year old has played a lot of forward for the Avalanche organization but this season he truly is doing it all from the blueline.

— Colorado Eagles (@ColoradoEagles) March 19, 2025

Second Star - Ty Felhaber - 60 GP: 20G, 18A, 38P

It is difficult to highlight any key forwards because the Eagles do approach scoring up front by committee but Ty Felhaber had a strong month of March after a quiet February. His 11 points including seven goals was a big contribution to the winning month, especially since he is a threat shorthanded.

SHORTIE ALERT!!!!! Tye Felhaber scores his 19th goal of the season and his 3rd shortie this year!. Assisted by Megna (29) #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry https://t.co/LI9D5JNvfU pic.twitter.com/ADWKdX1UHv

— Brennan Vogt (@brennan_vogt) March 23, 2025

Third Star - Trent Miner - 32GP: 18-8-6, 2.13 GAA, .918 SV%

The Eagles have been blessed with great goaltending since their move to the AHL and Trent Miner is no exception. Miner has seamlessly transitioned to the starter in Loveland and that strong foundation is helping push the Eagles up the standings. Miner was a key part of that successful run of wins in March going 6-2-1 and he only gave up 16 goals total in those starts.

It’s another Colorado Avalanche game day!

After a disappointing outcome against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche wrap up against this current homestand tonight against the Calgary Flames. This will be the third and final regular-season matchup between these two teams, with Colorado having won both of the previous matchups.

— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 31, 2025

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs come into this game coming off of a matinee game against the St. Louis Blues, in which they unfortunately lost by a final score of 2-1. That game was a frustrating one to say the least, as Colorado was unable to solve Jordan Binnington before time expired.

While Colorado still has a pretty decent grasp on the third place spot in the Central Division right now, the Blues and Minnesota Wild are both only six points back of the Avs. Becasuse of this, getting two points tonight all of a sudden seems far more important than it did previously.

There were a couple lineup changes reported after morning skate. Erik Johnson and Jimmy Vesey will return tonight but Joel Kiviranta will not despite participating in the session.

Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen - Nathan MacKinnon - Jonathan Drouin
Valeri Nichushkin - Brock Nelson - Martin Necas
Jimmy Vesey - Charlie Coyle - Ross Colton
Parker Kelly - Jack Drury - Logan O’Connor

Devon Toews - Cale Makar
Ryan Lindgren - Sam Malinski
Samuel Girard - Erik Johnson

Scott Wedgewood

Calgary Flames

The Flames have recently slipped out of the wild card race in the Western Conference, as they are now seven points behind both the Blues and the Wild. That’s not to say they can’t still make it into the playoffs, as it’s technically still possible until they’re officially eliminated, but their chances are dwindling by the day as we head towards the end of the regular season. Every point matters throughout the entierty of the regular season, but every point really matters for Calgary at this point.

Projected Lineup

Yegor Sharangovich - Nazem Kadri - Martin Pospisil
Jonathan Huberdeau - Morgan Frost - Matt Coronato
Joel Farabee - Mikael Backlund - Blake Coleman
Ryan Lomberg - Kevin Rooney - Adam Klapka

Joel Hanley - Mackenzie Weegar
Kevin Bahl - Rasmus Andersson
Jake Bean - Brayden Pachal

Goaltenders

For tonight, Scott Wedgewood is likely to get the start, and Dustin Wolf is likely to get the start across the ice from him. Mackenzie Blackwood had a really strong performance against the Blues, despite the loss, and you’ll need a strong performance from Wedgewood tonight to help secure an important two points against the Flames.

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Chicago Blackhawks (7:30 p.m. MST)

Colorado Avalanche v Chicago Blackhawks

It’s a Colorado Avalanche gameday!

Following two frustrating losses on home ice that saw the Colorado Avalanche played well, but not well enough, the Avs are back on the road this evening as they prepare for a primetime matchup with the young and lowly Chicago Blackhawks. The Avs weren’t necessarily bad in either of the losses to the St. Louis Blues and the Calgary Flames, but a couple of lapses were all it took for the Avs to see three valuable points slip to the wayside.

The conquest to catch the Dallas Stars has become practically impossible, and the heat of the pack is catching up to the Avs just a little. Chicago will be as young and inexperienced as ever, as they welcome in a couple of NCAA prospects into the fold to finish off the season. Games like these are the ones the Avs need to come out of with two points.

Colorado Avalanche:

As previously mentioned, the Avs didn’t come out of their recent homestand with the results they hoped for. Missing out on three of four points was not ideal for their chase for home ice in round one, as the gap between them and the Dallas Stars has ballooned to eight points. Dallas even finds themselves closer to catching the Winnipeg Jets as it stands, so now the focus for Colorado shifts towards maintaining the #3 seed in the Central Division.

“Some good stuff, some bad stuff,” said Avs forward Ross Colton following Monday’s 3-2 shootout loss to Calgary.

“For the most part we’ve been playing well, but then kind of have some lapses where we’re letting teams back into it. There’s some stuff we can build on, some stuff we can pull that’s good, but we need to focus on hitting our stride come these two weeks.”

The top forward lines need to find their stride, as recently even strength scoring has become a premium. Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar has done some shuffling to try and produce some sparks, specifically for Artturi Lehkonen, who has gone without a goal in ten consecutive games, with the last meeting with the Hawks being the last time Lehkonen found the twine. Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin haven’t struggled to the same tune, but have definitely been underwhelming in this recent stretch. Bednar will have the trio together on the top line tonight to see if they can all get each other going.

Samuel Girard (undisclosed) will not dress tonight. Keaton Middleton will play in his place. Girard had been out for a handful of games in March due to a minor injury, but it is unknown if tonight’s absence is related to that. Additionally, Joel Kiviranta will make his return to the lineup tonight alongside Charlie Coyle and Ross Colton.

This morning, the Avalanche recalled goaltender Kevin Mandolese from the Colorado Eagles. Earlier this week, it was reported that Scott Wedgewood was having his mask checked out after taking a shot in practice.

Wedgewood sitting with the trainer on the bench.....they are looking at his mask and he may have taken one off of the noggin #Avs #GoAvsGo @HockeyMtnHighCO

— Brennan Vogt (@brennan_vogt) April 1, 2025

With that being said, Wedgewood was on the ice this morning for the AM skate, and is set to go between the pipes tonight. In 15 starts for the Avs this season Wedgewood has been stellar, going 10-4-1 and posting a 2.01 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. He’ll pick up consecutive starts, likely leaving tomorrow’s matchup with Columbus to Mackenzie Blackwood.

Projected Lineup:

Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Jonathan Drouin (27)

Valeri Nichushkin (13) — Brock Nelson (11) — Martin Necas (88)

Joel Kiviranta (94) — Charlie Coyle (10) — Ross Colton (20)

Parker Kelly (17) — Jack Drury (18) — Logan O’Connor (25)

Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

Ryan Lindgren (55) — Sam Malinski (70)

Samuel Girard (49) — Erik Johnson (6)

Mackenzie Blackwood (39)

Scott Wedgewood (41)

Chicago Blackhawks:

As about everyone in the hockey world expected, the Blackhawks have been one of the worst teams in the NHL this season, and the prospect revolution has taken full force behind Connor Bedard to close out this season. With only one win in their previous ten games, this final month of the season has been nothing more than experience building for the Blackhawks.

The last time the Avs faced the Blackhawks just under one month ago, Chicago was welcoming in top defense prospect Ayrtom Levshunov to the NHL. On Sunday night they welcomed two more top prospects from the NCAA, as forward Oliver Moore and defenseman Sam Rinzel made their NHL debuts in a 5-2 loss to the Utah Hockey Club.

Spencer Knight is set to start between the pipes for Chicago, acquired from the Florida Panthers in the blockbuster Seth Jones trade, Knight and Arvid Soderblom have formed a formidable young tandem for the Blackhawks to progress forward through the rebuild with. In his nine starts for the Blackhawks, Knight has gone 3-6-0 with a 3.26 goals against average and a .887 save percentage. These are vast drop offs from his season numbers with the Panthers, but no one said it was going to be easier to backstop a rebuilder.

Projected Lineup:

Ryan Donato (8) — Connor Bedard (98) — Ilya Mikheyev (65)

Tuevo Teravainen (86) — Frank Nazar (91) — Tyler Bertuzzi (59)

Landon Slaggert (84) — Oliver Moore (11) — Lukas Reichel (73)

Nick Foligno (17) — Joe Veleno (90) — Pat Maroon (77)

Alex Vlasic (72) — Sam Rinzel (6)

Wyatt Kaiser (44) — Ayrtom Levshunov (55)

Ethan Del Mastro (38) — Connor Murphy (5)

Spencer Knight (30)

Arvid Soderblom (40)

Recap: The Avs mount a comeback of their own, besting the Hawks in a shootout

Colorado Avalanche v Chicago Blackhawks

The Avs win 3-2 on a SO tally from Artturi Lehknonen!

The Colorado Avalanche visited the windy city to face the Blackhawks for the fourth time this season. Surprisingly, the Blackhawks are 2-1 against the boys in burgundy and blue this season. The game started slow and favored the Blackhawks, but the Avalanche did what they had to do in the end and will head to Columbus with 2 points.

First Period

The Avalanche appeared to get out on the right foot early in the first period when Sam Malinksi finished a feed from Val Nichushkin. Unfortunately, the goal was called back for being offside—tough luck for Malinski, who has had two goals taken off the board due to the offside review.

SAM MALINSKI!!

But hold the phone, this one is being challenged for being offside.

Gonna be close.#GoAvsGo

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) April 3, 2025

The Avalanche earned a powerplay later in the period, but what should have proven an advantage for Colorado turned into a short-handed tally for the Blackhawks. Mikheyev scored over the glove of Wedewood for his 18th goal of the season, and it was 1-0 Chicago.

Second Period

The Avalanche didn’t get off to a great start in the second, but thankfully, Scott Wedgewood made save after save to keep the score at 1-0. Colorado earned another powerplay but was unsuccessful and gave up yet another short-handed breakaway. Wedgewood saved the day.

Connor Murphy would add to the damage and doubt with the first goal of the second period. Avs couldn’t seem to get it out of their own end, and before long, tired legs led to a one-timer look for Murphy, and he cashed in off the far post and in. Chicago took a 2-0 lead.

Just after the Avs could not cash in on their third powerplay chance of the evening, the Avalanche informed us that Jonathan Drouin had sustained a lower-body injury and would not return. We must keep an eye on that as the regular season ends. The second period would end with a penalty kill for the Avalanche after Nichushkin went off for tripping at 17:47.

He will not return to tonight’s game.#GoAvsGo

— Adrian Hernandez (@AdoHernandez27) April 3, 2025

Third Period

The Avalanche got their fourth powerplay chance of the night but yet again couldn’t capitalize, and the frustration started to show on the bench. A combination of an excellent performance from Spencer Knight and missed opportunities for the Avalanche had things looking bleak, that is, until Cale Makar got Colorado on the board on a beautiful feed from Nathan MacKinnon. This goal would mark the beginning of Colorado’s comeback. Cale Makar is so good.

The Avalanche couldn’t stay out of the box in the second half of the final frame but did have a few chances with Scott Wedgewood off and the extra attacker on. A MacKinnon wrister was among Colorado’s best chances until a point blast went off Martin Necas (who looked hurt earlier in the period) and into the net with 9.8 seconds left in regulation.

Shootout

In the end, Nathan MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen buried their shootout opportunities. Scott Wedgewood made two saves, giving the Avalanche a late-night victory in a game they likely had no business winning.

Takeaways

Watching this Avalanche team play down to their opponent this late in the season is so hard. I’m here for the human nature discussion regarding not having any playoff position to play for, but these guys are still professional hockey players. That said, they started slow and finished strong while showing plenty of emotion and want-to late in the game.

I know the Avalanche were notoriously bad in 2022 before going on to win a cup, but I still don’t like to see them form bad habits and drop three straight. Thankfully that didn’t happen tonight. Start slow like this in the playoffs, and you will quickly be staring at elimination. For now, I’ll live by this motto: Do not overreact.

*DO NOT OVER-REACT*

As previously mentioned, Marty Necas went down in the third period and wrenched his neck in a way that could not feel good. I wonder if he takes the night off tomorrow as the second of a back-to-back. Imagine hearing “a pop,” as Marty told the AltitudeTV crew, and coming back to score the game-tying goal with less than ten seconds to go.

It was an interesting little tidbit before puck-drop. Erik Johnson told Paul Bizzonette and the TNT crew about his campaigning efforts, which landed him in Colorado at the deadline.

Upcoming

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks

Can Colorado overcome day-of travel to down the Blue Jackets?

It was a weird night for the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. They played poorly but managed to just barely eke out a win in Chicago. Then, a storm system prevented their plane from leaving on schedule, and they got stuck in the Windy City. They got a night in a hotel, but they had to fly to Columbus this morning for tonight’s contest with a Blue Jackets team that’s been resting and waiting for the Avs to arrive.

Both teams come into the game 3-2 in their last five games. However, that number is disappointing for a Colorado team locked into the three seed in the Central and struggling to muster the will to take down lesser teams with more to play for. At the same time, Columbus can be proud of the way they’ve been battling to stay alive in the chase for an Eastern Conference wildcard spot.

For the Avs, this will be their third game against a team that is playing desperate hockey to keep their playoff hopes alive in their last four. The previous two did not end well, as St. Louis and Calgary both outworked and outscored the Burgundy and Blue. They’ll need to find a way to lock in their best effort for this game to overcome their travel woes on a weather-complicated back-to-back and the motivation gap between them and a Columbus team with everything on the line.

Can the Colorado Eagles go all the way?

54397161202_fa6e55e1be_b.0.jpg

Ashley Potts/Colorado Eagles

The players and the coaching staff are all in this year for a Calder Cup championship.

How deep can the Colorado Eagles go this postseason? It is a question that I started asking myself right after the All-Star Classic in January. The furthest that the Eagles have ever made it in the Calder Cup Playoffs has been the Division Finals in 2022. That year they lost to the Stockton Heat (CGY) three games to one. But this season I believe they can go the distance and here is why.

The Captains Have Returned

Jayson Megna has returned to the Eagles after playing a year for the Providence Bruins (BOS). He has provided excellent leadership in the locker room and a threat on the penalty kill. Megna has one shorthanded goal this season and leads the AHL in shorthanded points (7). He is third on the team in points with 48 (16/32) in 59 games this season. The captain has increased his point production by 15 points this season compared to 2022.

The big addition has been Jacob MacDonald. He is back for his second stint with the Eagles as well, this time setting records. MacDonald leads the AHL in goals for a defenseman with 29, one away from the league record set by John Slaney in 1999–2000. His 53 points not only lead the Eagles, but all defensemen in the league. He has been a force to be reckoned with on the power play, scoring 13 goals on the man advantage.

The Team

The Eagles are now in their seventh season since upgrading from the ECHL. Their last two seasons there, they won back-to-back Kelly Cups under head coach Aaron Schneekloth. Greg Cronin took over head coaching duties when the team moved up to the AHL, leaving for Anaheim last year. Schneekloth has since taken the duties over again and done nothing but improve the team.

This season they have the best winning percentage (.662) they have had since joining the AHL and currently stand third in the league. The Eagles are fighting for a division title they could secure in the next few days.

The Playoffs

If the playoffs started today, the Eagles would have a first-round bye for the play-in. They would play the lowest seeded winner from that round, which would probably be at this time the Coachella Valley Firebirds (SEA). Colorado holds the advantage with a 5–3–0–0 record this season against the Firebirds. Unfortunately, the last time these two met in the playoffs (2023), the Firebirds won three games to two. They will be a hard team to beat since they have gone to the finals the last two years, so there is plenty of experience there.

American Hockey League

If the Eagles can maintain home ice throughout the playoffs, that will help them for sure. Colorado has the best record at home in the Western Conference with a 23–5–2–2 record. Players have always said that playing Blue Arena is hard because of the fans. Some players, like Matthew Phillips who played for the Heat, mentioned that he is glad he is on the right side of the bench because of it.

The belief is there for the Eagles, now they just have to continue doing what they have been doing all season and that is to win.
