14 I don’t knows from the Eagles’ spring practices

Stock report from OTAs and mandatory minicamp (Part 3 of 3).

The Philadelphia Eagles officially wrapped up their spring offseason workout program last week. Now let’s take a look at the winners, losers, and I don’t knows that stood out from three media-attended practices (two days of voluntary OTAs and one mandatory minicamp session).

Disclaimer: These were non-contact drills (no pads) and three practices is a pretty small sample size. There’s still plenty of time for players to change their outlook — for better or worse — over the course of training camp and preseason games.

I DON’T KNOWS

LB JIHAAD CAMPBELL

Campbell, who apparently isn’t 100% recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, did not participate in the Eagles’ first two media-attended practices. The 2025 first-round pick did some position drill work as an off-ball linebacker during the team’s sole mandatory minicamp practice before sitting out of team drills.

Vic Fangio said that Campbell “won’t hit the practice field until sometime in August.” Even with a generous interpretation that he returns in full around August 1, he’ll have missed about seven practices. Last year, the Eagles held 16 training camp practices.

And so it seems like Campbell might be behind the eight ball to begin his rookie season. That much isn’t necessarily a death knell. Cooper DeJean was able to eventually get on the field and be a very important contributor the Eagles’ defense despite missing significant time in training camp last year. Perhaps Campbell takes a similar path.

But maybe it takes longer than expected for Campbell to see a lot of playing time. We’ll see.

LB NAKOBE DEAN

Fangio said Dean “won’t be back for a while.” It seems like he might begin the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list (PUP) after suffering a torn patellar tendon on January 12. If that’s the case, Dean will automatically miss the Eagles’ first four games. It’s possible he’ll be out even longer.

This is a really big year for Dean since he’s set to be a free agent after the 2025 season. And his injury recovery isn’t the only obstacle to him getting back on the field. What if Campbell is shining in his absence? A good problem for the Eagles to have, for sure, but not so ideal for Dean’s personal outlook.

DT JORDAN DAVIS

Somehow, we’re in the eleventy billionth straight offseason of “Jordan Davis is in the best shape of his life!”

No, but, seriously, for real this time!

I’m not even one of the biggest Davis skeptics. I really wanted the Eagles to draft him in 2022.

But it’s hard to ignore the red flags.

The statistical production is very low: 5.5 sacks, eight TFLs, and 10 QB hits in 55 career games played (including playoffs).

While there’s an argument to be made his impact goes beyond the box score, it’s not like he’s a total force out there. If he was, Fangio would have played him much more often. Davis finished fourth on the Eagles in defensive tackle snaps played (445) last season ... behind Jalen Carter (1068), Milton Williams (654), and Moro Ojomo (490).

Maybe the best is truly yet to come for Davis. He did play well in the playoffs. And he looked disruptive during some spring practice reps.

Maybe this will be like Dexter Lawrence not really emerging until Year 4.

Maybe. But I don’t know that I feel good about the chances.

WR JAHAN DOTSON

The good news is that Jalen Hurts showed a willingness to throw to Dotson. It’s important for them to build chemistry this offseason. Of course, Hurts often didn’t have A.J. Brown (resting) or DeVonta Smith (absent until minicamp) to throw to.

I don’t know if Dotson looked so good that I feel confident that he’ll be significantly better in 2025. It’s really not a high bar to clear since he finished 112th out of 112 wide receivers in yards per route run last season. He also doesn’t need to — and likely won’t — post big numbers since he’s behind Brown, Smith, and Dallas Goedert in the target pecking order. But it would be nice if he’s mixed in a little bit more than he was in 2024.

EDGE JOSHUA UCHE

Uche didn’t stand out in practice. But he did get some notable mentions during press conferences.

When asked about the edge rusher position, Uche was the first name mentioned by Fangio after Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt. He also brought up Uche’s name again, along with Azeez Ojulari’s, in an answer to a broader question about the team’s defensive depth.

Lane Johnson first mentioned Uche when asked if any of the Eagles’ edge rushers are standing out to him. He also talked about how Uche gave him some challenges in the past.

Zack Baun said Uche is among the down-the-depth-chart players who’ve talked to him about going from relative afterthought to a bonafide star. Uche seems to realize the opportunity to reset his market.

Some encouraging signs so far. But going to need to see on-field production before totally buying in.

S TRISTIN MCCOLLUM

Without even being asked about him, Fangio brought up McCollum as a contender for the starting safety job next to Reed Blankenship. The full exchange:

Q: What’s your view of the Drew Mukuba-Sydney Brown competition?

FANGIO: It’s a competition that is going to take a training camp and a few preseason games to sort out. And Tristin [McCollum]’s in that, too.

But McCollum saw fewer first-team safety reps than 2024 undrafted rookie free agent signing Andre’ Sam.

Speaking of ...

S ANDRE’ SAM

Fangio was asked the following question earlier this month:

Q: How much did depth have to do with the defense’s success last year, and do you think you have that same depth going into this season?

His answer:

FANGIO: It’s too early to say. I mean, I look at – and I told the players this. I look at this year, very similar to last year in that at this time last year, we had a lot of turnover in personnel from the previous year. You had Baun, nobody knew what he was at this point last year. You had Nakobe, who hadn’t played any meaningful NFL football in his first two years. You had Oren Burks, who we had just signed. You had Isaiah Rodgers, who we had just signed. You had Ojomo, who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. We got Nolan, who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. We got Chauncey back. We drafted Q, Cooper, Jalyx. We had a lot of question marks at that time. This year, those names are replaced. Ringo, Adoree’, Sydney, McCollum, Ojulari, Uche, Byron Young, Gabe Hall, Booker, Jihaad, all the draft picks – Mukuba, Robinson, Smael, and then the rest of the rookies. Some of those guys in that second list have to become like those guys in the first list, and I don’t know how that’s going to turn out, but I look at us really basically the same one year to the next. The names have changed. Hopefully we’ll get the same results from these new guys that we got from a lot of the new guys last year.

Once again, no mention of Sam.

And, yet, Sam saw more first-team reps than McCollum.

CB ADOREE’ JACKSON

Jackson didn’t have a bad spring. The veteran cornerback is still in the mix for the starting cornerback spot in the Eagles’ nickel defense. But he did get outshined by Kelee Ringo. If that continues, he’ll have to settle for a backup role. Which, as evidenced by Isaiah Rodgers’ performance last year, is still important.

Jackson might be able to provide some value off the field as a veteran who adds levity to the locker room. He seems like a fun personality ... and the Eagles notably lost one of those by cutting Darius Slay.

CB MAC MCWILLIAMS

McWilliams split some second-team nickel cornerback reps with Parry Nickerson. The rookie could be a key player if Cooper DeJean gets banged up (knock on wood).

WR AINIAS SMITH

Smith was pretty invisible in the first two media-attended OTA practices before having some nice catches on the final day. All told, Danny Gray and Terrace Marshall stood out more than Smith.

WR DARIUS COOPER

Cooper stood out to me more than I expected from an undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver out of Tarleton State. I don’t know that he’s able to compete for a roster spot but he could be pushing for a practice squad role.

TE HARRISON BRYANT

None of the depth tight ends seemed to create real separation for the TE3 job.

TE KYLEN GRANSON

None of the depth tight ends seemed to create real separation for the TE3 job.

OT MYLES HINTON

Hinton left the Eagles’ final spring practice with some kind of injury. One would hope the rookie will be ready to participate in training camp. We’ll see.

Eagles 53-man roster prediction: Post-OTAs and minicamp projection

NFL: JUN 03 Philadelphia Eagles OTA

Photo by Terence Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Here’s an updated look at what the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles could look like.

We previously published a Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster prediction prior to their spring practices. Since then, we’ve learned more about the team through watching their OTAs and minicamp. And so now it’s time for an updated projection that accounts for the winners, losers, and I don’t knows of the spring offseason workout program. We’ll learn even more about the Eagles through training camp practices and preseason games but, for now, here’s a look at how the roster is shaping up.

OFFENSE

QUARTERBACK: Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Kyle McCord (3) [3]

Hurts looked sharp in the spring. McKee fared well as QB2. McCord outperformed Dorian Thompson-Robinson and appears to be in the lead for the emergency third quarterback role.

RUNNING BACK: Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, AJ Dillon (3) [6]

It remains to be seen how effective Barkley will be coming off such a huge workload. It’s hard to bet against him, though. Shipley has the potential to be more of a factor in the passing game than Kenny Gainwell was as RB2 last year. Does Dillon definitely make the roster? Only keeping two running backs seems too cute but I don’t know if the former second-round pick is a lock.

FULLBACK: Ben VanSumeren (1) [7]

The Eagles converted BVS from linebacker to fullback. He’s shown intriguing potential as a lead blocker. We’ll see if he gets any offensive touches.

WIDE RECEIVER: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Terrace Marshall, Avery Williams, Danny Gray (6) [13]

Brown, Smith, Dotson, Marshall, and Gray are the Eagles’ five best receivers right now. The latter of those two not being proven on special teams is a drawback. Williams didn’t participate in spring practices but he’s potentially going to return both kicks and punts for the Eagles. In all likelihood, at least one of Johnny Wilson and/or Ainias Smith will probably make the roster since it’s hard to see the team giving up on two picks from the 2024 NFL Draft. But I’m not sure they’ll deserve to make it based on merit alone.

TIGHT END: Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, Harrison Bryant (3) [16]

None of these players are signed beyond the 2025 season but, hey, that’s a problem for the 2026 Eagles. Goedert is good when he’s healthy. Calcaterra has pass-catching ability but must be better as a blocker. Neither Bryant nor Kylen Granson really created separation for the TE3 job during spring practices. Nick Muse is a long shot to keep an eye on after he really impressed by making flashy catches in OTAs and minicamp. The Eagles probably don’t need to keep four tight ends while also keeping a fullback.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Matt Pryor, Kenyon Green, Drew Kendall, Trevor Keegan, Myles Hinton (10) [26]

Steen took all the first-team reps at right guard during the spring. If he’s able to avoid losing his spot, the starting offensive line is set. I’m predicting the Eagles to do some roster chicanery with Kendall Lamm by temporarily cutting the vested veteran and then quickly re-signing him to allow them to stash a younger player on injured reserve during the cuts deadline. Lamm could be the top swing tackle. Pryor appears to be the top backup guard option ... or at least on the right side. It’s also possible he overtakes Steen if the 2023 third-round pick disappoints. Green doesn’t appear to be in starting contention. Kendall should really be the backup center since Brett Toth simply can’t snap the football. Keegan might be in jeopardy of being cut prior to his second season but we’re keeping him on for now. Hinton seems more ready to play now than fellow rookies Cameron Williams (whom we have the Eagles stashing on IR) and Hollin Pierce. And Jeff Stoutland seemed pretty excited by the Hinton draft pick.

DEFENSE

EDGE RUSHER: Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Azeez Ojulari, Joshua Uche, Antwaun Powell-Ryland (5) [31]

Vic Fangio talked about Smith and Hunt first when asked about the Eagles’ edge rusher outlook. The Birds are counting on these young disruptions to continue to develop. Ojulari can be a solid contributor if he can stay healthy. Uche drew praise from teammates and coaches for his spring program performance. APR probably isn’t suited to be a full-time player but he definitely has pass rush potential. Patrick Johnson might push for a roster spot just like he did last summer.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, Jordan Davis, Ty Robinson, Thomas Booker (5) [36]

Carter played a ton of snaps last year and Fangio doesn’t seem ready to pull back on the 24-year-old star. Ojomo played the third-most DT snaps of any Eagles interior defender last year and he figures to see a bigger role now with Milton Williams gone. The Eagles need more out of Davis than they’ve seen to this point. Robinson could be a solid rotational contributor as a rookie. Booker played well in a small sample size last year. Byron Young and Gabe Hall could challenge for a roster spot.

OFF-BALL LINEBACKER: Zack Baun, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Jihaad Campbell, Smael Mondon Jr. (4) [40]

It’ll be interesting to see how Baun follows up his All-Pro 2024 season. Trot Jr. is currently the favorite to start next to Baun until whichever of Campbell or Nakobe Dean (likely the former) is ready to play. Campbell must first earn Fangio’s trust, which could be a challenge if he misses a portion of training camp ... which might happen. Mondon Jr. figures to be a depth player and special teams contributor as a rookie. Dallas Gant is a prime contender to be temporarily elevated from the practice squad to the game day roster early in the season to help provide more LB depth.

CORNERBACK: Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Kelee Ringo, Adoree’ Jackson, Mac McWilliams (5) [45]

Mitchell and DeJean are currently the starting outside cornerbacks in the Eagles’ base defense, which they’ll probably only use for about seven snaps or so per game. DeJean figures to otherwise play at nickel cornerback. Ringo is currently ahead of Jackson in the battle for the outside cornerback job opposite of Mitchell in the Eagles’ nickel defense. McWilliams saw some spring snaps as the second-team slot CB and he often played on the outside in college. The Eagles could keep Eli Ricks ... but he’s entering the last year of his rookie deal. It could make sense to trade him for more depth at another position.

SAFETY: Reed Blankenship, Andrew Mukuba, Sydney Brown, Andre’ Sam, Tristin McCollum (5) [50]

Blankenship is starting. The question is: who will be next to him? We’re projecting Mukuba to beat out Brown since the rookie is already splitting first-team reps. It’s worth noting that Fangio said DeJean could seem some playing time at safety in the Eagles’ base defense, though that’s not a package we saw in the spring. Fangio mentioned McCollum is in the mix with Mukuba and Brown for a starting safety job but it was Sam who took more first-team reps in the spring. For now, we’ll say the Eagles keep five here. It’s also possible they later add a veteran (see: Justin Simmons) if the young players don’t step up.

SPECIAL TEAMS

KICKER: Jake Elliott (1) [51]

Elliott could be poised to bounce back in 2025.

PUNTER: Braden Mann (1) [52]

Mann is entering a contract season.

LONG SNAPPER: Charley Hughlett (1) [53]

Hughlett is only the Eagles’ third full-time LS since 2006.

INJURY DESIGNATIONS

PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM LIST (PUP): Nakobe Dean

Dean suffered a torn patellar tendon on January 12. Speaking in early June, Vic Fangio said the fourth-year linebacker “won’t be back for a while.” If Dean does indeed go on the reserve/PUP list, he’ll automatically miss the first four games of the season.

INJURED RESERVE (ELIGIBLE TO RETURN): Ainias Smith, Cameron Williams

The Eagles stashed Smith away on IR last year. I could see Howie Roseman doing it again to avoid giving up on a 2024 draft pick. As a developmental tackle, Williams seems like a prime phantom injury candidate to be stashed on IR.

PRACTICE SQUAD

QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, RB Lew Nichols, RB Montrell Johnson Jr., WR Darius Cooper, WR Taylor Morin, TE Kylen Granson, TE Nick Muse, OL Brett Toth, OT Hollin Pierce, EDGE Ochaun Mathis, EDGE KJ Henry, DT Byron Young, LB Dallas Gant, CB Eli Ricks, CB Parry Nickerson, S Maxen Hook.

International exemption: OT Laekin Vakalahi

Eagles schedule preview: Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys Introduce Brian Schottenheimer as New Head Coach

How ‘bout them Cowboys? They stink.

When and Where: Week 1 in Philly, Week 12 in Dallas

Last season: Went 3-5 with Dak Prescott, and 4-5 without him.

Added: Robert Jones, Kenneth Murray, George Pickens, Javonte Williams, Dante Fowler, Solomon Thomas

Lost: Eric Kendricks, Jourdan Lewis, Chauncey Golston, Zack Martin, Rico Dowdle, Cooper Rush, Brandin Cooks, Demarcus Lawrence

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Tyler Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Shavon Revel

Biggest question facing this team: Is this a serious franchise?

It is a great time to be a Cowboys hater. New Cowboys head Brian Schottenheimer is the Dave Campo of Jason Garretts. No other team in the league would have hired Schottenheimer to be their offensive coordinator, the Cowboys made him their head coach. Also he’s pretty cheap. Surely just a coincidence for a franchise that has allowed their previous two head coaches to walk on expired contracts in lame duck seasons rather than fire them and pay for two coaches at once.

On paper, the Cowboys have the talent to win games. In 2022. In 2024, they went 3-7 against playoff teams, with four of those losses being blowouts. Their offensive line is now a liability and Tyler Booker isn’t going to turn it around on his own; their running game remains non-existent, adding a RB who wasn’t good enough for the equally RB challenged Broncos isn’t going to turn it around; their solution to upgrade their passing game was trading for George Pickens. Brian Schottenheimer isn’t elevating this roster. He couldn’t last year.

This team is going to be bad. Potentially really bad. Dallas hasn’t been truly bad on merit since the Dave Campo era from 2000-2002 where they went 5-11 every year, their losing seasons since then have come in years when their starting QB missed several games. Dak Prescott, who has missed at least five games in three of the last five seasons, could start every game this year, play well, and the Cowboys might still go 5-12. It is a great time to be a Cowboys hater.

Making this game the first of the season was a poor choice by the league. The Thursday kickoff game has traditionally been the defending champions against either a playoff team or a supposed up and coming team. The Cowboys are neither.

The Eagles should sweep the Cowboys this season, but to steal a line, the cemetery of football is filled with favorites. The season opener should not be slept on. Divisional games are always capable of having funky results, and while the Eagles have yet to lose a season opener under Nick Sirianni, the last three were not the smoothest of games. They also haven’t swept a full strength Cowboys team since 2011, which was the first full season with Brian Schottenheimer Jason Garrett as head coach.

Eagles schedule preview: Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl LIX: Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

KC is running back the same plan of not running it back

When and Where: Week 2 in Kansas City

Last season: Lost to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Perhaps you heard.

Added: Kristian Fulton, Gardner Minshew, Jerry Tillery, Jaylon Moore

Lost: Joe Thuney, Justin Reid, Tershawn Wharton, Justin Watson

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Josh Simmons

Biggest question facing this team: Can the offensive line not be a liability in the playoffs?

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have lost two Super Bowls. In both, Mahomes was under pressure all game. After their loss to the Bucs, the Chiefs replaced every starter on their offensive line. After their loss to the Eagles, they dusted off the same playbook and again made significant changes to their OL. The Chiefs acquired two OTs this offseason, but both are big question marks.

First, they signed Jaylon Moore, who in four seasons with the 49ers started 12 games as a swing tackle. The 49ers tackle situation is also less than spectacular, though on the right side, in Kansas City he’ll compete for the left tackle starting job. Moore was one of the first free agent signings announced, and only signed to a two year deal, from a team with their own OL problems. What exactly was the rush to sign him?

In the draft, the Chiefs took Josh Simmons with the 32nd pick. Simmons tore his patellar tendon in October, ending his season. If not for the injury, he probably would have been the top OT prospect in the draft. But he did get hurt, and his injury does not have a good recovery rate, with a study released in February showing a 55% return to play rate. Simmons is by all accounts on or ahead of schedule to return from it, but being able to return to practice is only part of the recovery.

The Chiefs ended the season in desperate need of a left tackle. Their solution was to sign a career backup from a flawed OL, and draft someone with a serious injury. Perhaps it will work out, probably not by Week 2 though. Or perhaps they will be back to square one in a year, or worse if Travis Kelce retires.

Eagles schedule preview: Los Angeles Rams

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

Two Super Bowl contenders?

When and Where: Week 3 at home

Last season: Won the NFC West with a negative point differential, finished the playoffs with a positive point differential.

Added: Coleman Shelton, Davante Adams, Poona Ford, Nate Landman

Lost: Demarcus Robinson, Christian Rozeboom, Cooper Kupp, Michael Hoecht, Bobby Brown

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: The Rams once again did not make a 1st round selection, though they got the Falcons 2026 1st, which will probably be a really good pick.

Biggest question facing this team: Can the two different timelines the Rams are on meet for one glorious season?

Matthew Stafford is 37, the 2nd oldest starting QB in the league unless Joe Flacco wins the job in Cleveland. Stafford was really good last year, keeping the Rams treading water early in the season when Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp were out, then going 9-3 with a full strength roster. But he’s only got so many good years left, and at his age it is possible he doesn’t have any. Aging out can hit hard in the NFL, and if they need to the Rams can get out of his contract after this season.

Even with a geezer at QB, the Rams had one of the youngest rosters in the league last year. In back to back seasons they have had two players receive top 3 rookie of the year votes: Jared Verse won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, Puka Nacua finished 2nd for Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023; and Kobie Turner in 2023 and Braden Fiske in 2024 were 3rd for DROY. That’s a good starting point for a core.

The Rams are extremely well set up for the future. With two first round picks next year, including a potentially really good one with the Falcons pick, they’re already in play to move up for a QB in 2026 who can sit behind Stafford for a year, then take over the reins of a well coached, ascending team.

Their biggest hurdle may be health. In two of the past three seasons, the Rams have been one of the most injured teams in the league, finishing 23rd in Adjusted Games Lost in 2024, and 31st in 2022. In 2023, they were 1st, the healthiest team in the league. Stafford’s as tough as they come but he’s missed half a season twice in the last six seasons. In college and the pros, Puka Nacua has only been healthy for a full season one time, in 2023.

Saquon Barkley ran all over them in November, but the Rams were the only team that the Eagles did not dominate in the playoffs. This is a good team, and one on the up. If Stafford can keep a high level of play, the Rams could easily be a top team in the NFC.

Eagles schedule preview: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

When and Where: Week 4 in Tampa, “Tampa Bay” is an actual bay

Last season: Finished the season with the 6th best point differential in the league, then lost on a last second field goal in the playoffs.

Added: Anthony Walker, Haason Reddick

Lost: Jordan Whitehead, KJ Britt

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Emeka Egbuka, Benjamin Morrison

Biggest question facing this team: Can someone on this roster, particularly on defense, step it up in the postseason?

Over the last three seasons, the Bucs have won 8, then 9, then 10 games. Nice and steady progression, but not particularly impressive in the woeful NFC South. Over those three years, the NFCS has produced just one winning season that wasn’t by the Bucs when the Saints went 9-8 in 2023.

Over those three seasons, the Bucs only win in the playoffs was against the downward spiraling 2023 Eagles. In their three losses, they’ve gotten zero takeaways, given up at least 350 yards in each game, given up 8 total passing TDs, and sacked the QB just four times.

For all the credit Todd Bowles gets as a defensive mind, his defense isn’t getting the job done when it matters the most. Haason Reddick, who skipped voluntary OTAs, could help in 2025, and then be gone in 2026. Their top defensive draft pick, Benjamin Morrison, has already had two hip surgeries.

And the offense is probably taking a step back, at least early in the season, as Chris Godwin’s return date from a broken ankle is still unclear; and offensive coordinator Liam Cohen ghosted the team to take the Jaguars head coaching job and his replacement is 35 year old first time play caller Josh Grizzard.

One playoff win in three seasons should make this a make or break season for the Todd Bowles, plenty of coaches have been fired for less.

They’ll probably beat the Eagles though, because Todd Bowles has Jalen Hurts’ number. The only win Hurts has against him was Week 3 in 2023, when he had 2 TDs but also 2 INTs, the Eagles won because they held the Bucs to just 11 points.

Lane Johnson on Nick Sirianni: “I think he’s evolved”

Philadelphia Eagles v Detroit Lions

The Eagles veteran OT recently spoke about head coach Nick Sirianni and his best qualities.

Eagles’ OT Lane Johnson caught up this week with a couple former teammates, LeSean McCoy and Emmanuel Acho, on their show, “The Facility,” and spoke about head coach Nick Sirianni.

Johnson explained that one of the best things about Sirianni is that he’s a very good communicator, and how the head coach always addressed potential distractions, good or bad, as a team so nothing lingered — including the mid-season comments about the passing game last year.

“I think he’s evolved as he’s become a head coach. There’s things, you know, he had some vocal stuff on the sidelines, but he’s addressed stuff with the team when he’s wrong, and I think that makes him human, makes him vulnerable, and I think it makes guys communicate more effectively with him.

The OT also said that Sirianni is very passionate and competitive, and that helps get the guys motivated.

Eagles players made an effort last season to encourage the head coach to be himself, and he seems to have taken their advice. Now that Sirianni has signed a new contract keeping him in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future, it’s nice to hear how much guys respect him.

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Donovan Jackson was their only draft pick in the top 100 picks.

Biggest question facing this team: Is JJ McCarthy it?

Perhaps no team illustrates how the NFL is all about the QB than the Vikings. They have a Super Bowl caliber trio of pass catchers in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and TJ Hockenson. They have a Super Bowl caliber defense. They have a Super Bowl caliber coaching staff.

None of it matters if JJ McCarthy can’t play football.

McCarthy was a polarizing prospect when the Vikings drafted him 10th overall. He suffered a season ending injury in his first preseason game, robbing him of an entire year of needed development time. Whatever doubts one had about McCarthy, he couldn’t do anything to put any to rest.

This is a really good, well coached roster that just won 14 games with Sam Darnold at QB. Their defense is going to give QBs problems. Their pass catchers will stress any secondary, and open up the run game. The coaching staff got a winning performance out of a QB who was so new to the team he didn’t know anyone’s name.

The Vikings are ready to win now, though it’s not Super Bowl or bust for them this season. They were right to move on from Sam Darnold, who isn’t it. It would be unfair to make judgement on JJ McCarthy after half a season. But by the time the Eagles roll into town in the middle of the season, we should have some idea if the 2025 Vikings are ready for the big stage.

The Vikings should be too good for this to be a “trap game” but this could be tougher than it seems. The Vikings will be at home and coming off their bye after back to back international games, while the Eagles will be going on their bye after this game.

Eagles schedule preview: Green Bay Packers

NFL: NFC Wild Card Round-Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles

Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

We are in fact, talkin’ ‘bout Love

When and Where: Week 10 in Green Bay after a Week 9 bye

Last season: Started it by losing to the Eagles. Ended it by losing to the Eagles.

Added: Aaron Banks, Nate Hobbs

Lost: Josh Myers, Eric Wilson

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Matthew Golden, Anthony Belton

Biggest question facing this team: Can Jordan Love take the next step?

In 2023, Jordan Love was pretty good for a first time starter. He was 2nd in TD passes as the Packers won 9 regular season games and a playoff game. In 2024, he was… well, pretty good for a first time starter. Love didn’t really progress last season, nor did he regress. For a second year starter, plateauing isn’t the worst outcome.

But Jordan Love is not your typical third year starter, because he spent his first two seasons as a backup. Love is older than and was drafted before Brock Purdy, Justin Fields, and Trevor Lawrence, yet has fewer career passing attempts including the playoffs. He is only four months younger than Jalen Hurts. By the end of the season, there could be eight NFC teams starting a QB younger than Love.

While the rest of the roster is still in a rebuild mode, the QB position isn’t. Though the Packers can’t get out of Love’s contract until after next year, this is a make or break season for him. It is possible that by the end of the season he’s the best QB in the NFC North and the Packers are Super Bowl contenders. It is also possible that by the end of the season Love is the worst starting QB in the NFC North.

It is a bit reductive to say that everything hinges on the QB, but if your $100M guaranteed QB can’t carry your team, you’re just treading water.

The Linc - ESPN says the Eagles should add another wide receiver

Tennessee Titans v Washington Commanders

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 7/1/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Proposing one final offseason move for all 32 NFL teams - ESPN
Philadelphia Eagles: Sign wide receiver Tyler Boyd. What do you suggest for the team that has basically everything? I can’t even really suggest a contract extension here; Philadelphia’s top young player approaching free agency is Nakobe Dean, but the team already prepared for his departure by using a first-round pick on Jihaad Campbell in the most recent draft. One thing the Eagles could use is more depth at the wide receiver position, particularly a slot receiver who can open underneath and convert third downs. Keenan Allen would fit, but we have him going to the Dolphins, so how about Boyd? Boyd had just 39 catches for 390 yards with Tennessee last season, but he was an important part of the Bengals’ offense from 2016 to 2023. Jahan Dotson feels like he’s in a better position to be productive in his second season in the Eagles’ offense, but Boyd would provide a strong backup in case Dotson is not.

Jalen Carter contract projection: Eagles DT could be highest-paid ever - BGN
With training camp now less than a month away, we’re inching closer to the return of meaningful NFL football. The 2025 season offers an opportunity for another Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles, who retooled their roster with a combination of extensions and free agent additions over the course of the offseason to maintain their position as frontrunners in the NFC. It’s been a very aggressive offseason, with Philadelphia giving out an enormous amount of long-term money while keeping their salary cap flexibility intact. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk to maintain, but Howie Roseman’s approach to contract and salary cap management has produced undeniable success. In the spirit of that topic and given the dearth of news in the NFL over the coming weeks, why not take a look at some potential future moves for the Eagles over the coming months?

Eagles player review: QB Tanner McKee edition - PhillyVoice
What stood out about McKee’s performances was that he was prepared. It’s worth noting that even in the games McKee did not play, he dressed for all of them the last two seasons as the emergency quarterback, and he had a speaker in his helmet. “I think it’s huge,” McKee said of his opportunity to take mental reps during games. “Just being able to hear the play calls, hear what’s going through the coaches’ minds, or the quarterback’s mind. It’s great just being in their environment, just getting a feel of what it would be like to be on the field. I’m walking through what I would be doing if I were out there. When you get out there you don’t want to have to think about things like, ‘Where’s this motion going?’ You just want to go out there and play, and so I feel like getting those mental reps helps me personally.” Personally speaking, I know that when I’m sitting in press conferences I’ll zone out for a question or two. I’m sure many of you can relate in whatever your jobs may be. But McKee seems to take pride in being an attentive student of the game, never taking any mental reps off.

Saquon Barkley: I “never heard a word” from Commanders, Cowboys - PFT
Never heard a word from the Commanders or Dallas,” Barkley told someone who is apparently known as Janky Rondo (lay off me, I’m old) at a recent celebrity softball game. “That’s why it’s BTA when I see them.” The Commanders weren’t in position to make a run at an elite running back. The Cowboys were, especially with Tony Pollard leaving in free agency for the Titans. Dallas rightfully was criticized at the time for not showing interest in former Titans running back Derrick Henry, who was interested in playing for the Cowboys. Dallas didn’t catch much flak for not pursuing Saquon.

Eagles 2025 most important list: Reed Blankenship - NBCSP
At the ripe age of 26, Reed Blankenship is now the leader of the Eagles’ secondary. Just a few years ago, Blankenship was an undrafted rookie out of Middle Tennessee State fighting to earn his spot on the roster and his place in the NFL. Now, he’s entering Year 4 of his career and Year 3 as a starter as the oldest and most experienced projected starter for a secondary that led the NFL’s No. 1 defense in 2024. Veteran cornerback Darius Slay had been the leader in the Eagles’ secondary for a few seasons but Slay is gone now. And this offseason, Slay tabbed Blankenship as the guy to take his place as a leader. “It’s an honor,” Blankenship said. “I came here with Slay, into the room with Slay. Just seeing how he operates, seeing how he leads. Just trying to model my leadership role like that. You come in to the league and he’s been here for years and you don’t know how he’s going to be but he just came here with open arms, took me under his wing. Like I said, I learned a lot from him.”

Jason and Kylie Kelce raise more than $1 million for Eagles Autism Foundation - PE.com
Jason Kelce is thrilled to announce that the 5th annual Team 62 at the Ocean Drive raised a record-breaking $1 million and counting for the Eagles Autism Foundation. The fundraiser, held at the Ocean Drive in Sea Isle City on Wednesday, June 25, featured special guests as celebrity bartenders, including current Eagles players and team legends. Since 2021, Kelce’s event has raised more than $2.4 million for the Eagles Autism Foundation.

The 5 O’Clock Club - Schefter on McLaurin contract extension: “There is quite a gap between what both sides want” - Hogs Haven
Like nearly everyone else who has discussed the McLaurin contract publicly, Schefter seems short on specifics but very clear about one thing: he has a lot of confidence that the deal will get done. Schefter: “I cannot envision the Commanders moving on from [McLaurin] no matter how disgruntled he may be. You can’t imagine that these two sides, as far apart as they are today, wouldn’t be able to somehow find a way to bridge their differences and figure out a solution. But, today, McLaurin and the Commanders are not close.” Last month, I wasn’t pleased to hear Terry described as being “frustrated”. Schefter now uses the word “disgruntled” to describe McLaurin, which sounds worse.

Ride or die: Understanding the financial commitment the Cowboys have in Dak Prescott - Blogging The Boys
If you’re holding your breath for the Dak experiment to end, you might want to reconsider because you’ll be blue in the face before there are any signs that a change might occur. The reality is, Prescott is this team’s ride or die for the foreseeable future, and there’s really no way around it. He looks to be in great shape, and hopefully, some of the elements that have limited him in the past won’t be present this upcoming season. With any luck, fans will stop looking at their watch and instead savor the moment that this team still has a quarterback who gives them a fighting chance to win a Super Bowl.

Greg Cosell: Giants’ season all about developing Jaxson Dart - Big Blue View
For the New York Giants “the whole purpose of this season is to develop Jaxson Dart,” according to NFL analyst Greg Cosell. Cosell made that comment on the ‘Inside the Birds’ podcast with Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan. The Giants, of course, traded up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Dart 25th overall in the hopes that he could become their quarterback of the future. Cosell said he sensed Dart “could be polarizing” when he studied him prior to the draft. “Dart’s an interesting player. The mobility is a factor. You do have to factor that into the equation,” Cosell said. “Everybody always says ‘well he’s not special.’ Well, I don’t know what they mean when they say that. There’s only one Lamar Jackson. There’s only one Josh Allen, who is 6-5, 240. There’s only one [Patrick] Mahomes with his spatial awareness. So, you can’t just start saying ‘well it’s not special.’”

NFL trade grades for the Minkah Fitzpatrick-Jalen Ramsey deal between Dolphins and Steelers - SB Nation
The last day of June was supposed to be a quiet one in the NFL. “Not so fast my friends,” said the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a blockbuster NFL trade involving more players than draft picks, the Dolphins are sending star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Let’s grade the deal from both sides.

Finally! WNBA announces expansion team for Philadelphia - Liberty Ballers
In the words of the great LeBron James, it’s about damn time. The WNBA announced Monday that the league will have three new expansion franchise, including one in Philadelphia. The Philly team will begin play in 2030, which makes perfect sense. Earlier this year, HBSE and Comcast announced they’re working together to get a new arena built with the hopes of jointly owning a WNBA team. That arena, which will replace the Wells Fargo Center/soon-to-be-named Xfinity Mobile Arena, is set to open in 2031. According to a press release from the Sixers, HBSE will own and operate the team while Comcast has a minority stake.

The Linc - Former Eagles player says Jalen Carter is on a Hall of Fame trajectory

Super Bowl LIX: Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 7/2/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

“Did that really just happen?” How Khari Blasingame fell back in love with football - Go Long TD
Blasingame: It was different because it was all the time. It was just so consistent and so overwhelming. Jalen Carter? I hate to be presumptive and I hate to jump the gun and I know a lot of people have said it. But if that guy continues to do what he does, he’ll wear a gold jacket. He’s going to wear a gold jacket. He’s that good. Nolan Smith is violent, bro. Talk about splattering pullers. Zack Baun — intense. The defensive backs. Even down to the special teams — Will Shipley. It was just so consistent all the way around the ball. Oren Burks. I played with him in college. That first hit vs. Green Bay? The forced fumble on the kickoff? That set the tone, man, that set the tone. So I think that would be the difference. It came from everywhere. It came from everywhere from special teams, from defense and then the offense. Just the sheer size and physicality of the O-Line. You’ve got tight ends running down the field, blocking for receivers, blocking for the running back. It was just so consistent and so all the time. Yeah, I’ve experienced it. I’ve seen overwhelming force from a defense and from an offense at times. But it was just all the time in Philadelphia [...] Dunne: Jalen Carter in a gold jacket. It’s a different level of violence with him, isn’t it? I’m picturing him smacking Patrick Mahomes across the head. What makes him special [...] Blasingame: Obviously it’s the physical tools. He’s built like a tank. He’s so solid. I hit him one time in practice by accident — kind of bumped into him — and I’m like, “God damn.” He’s a solid human. But the football IQ. The different things. Understanding, OK, there was a play vs. the Rams where his football IQ made the play. They were stunting him all game. He fakes the stunt, goes and makes the game-winning sack. Those two things: God-given ability and football IQ. Some of the things he does, you can’t coach. You love to watch it.

Reed Blankenship contract projection: Eagles may want to move quickly on the safety market - BGN
The NFL “dead zone” is upon us, with very little news likely to surface between now and the start of training camps towards the end of July. Even so, now is the perfect time to take a closer look at the roster and where the Eagles still have some moves to make. Howie Roseman has been busy this offseason, orchestrating a number of large extensions and free agent additions to get this roster in top competitive shape heading into the summer. Roseman’s success as a cap manager goes hand-in-hand with his success in the NFL Draft, and that means a number of promising young players will soon come up for contract extensions. Reed Blankenship is a great success story for the Eagles, going from 2022 UDFA to plus starter in just two seasons. Now entering the final year of his rookie deal, he’s someone Philadelphia may want to consider extending sooner than later. Blankenship was signed as a UDFA after surprisingly falling out of the draft, and immediately carved out a rotational and special teams role as a rookie. He would go on to start 15 games in 2023 as a well above-average starter, with particular strength as a coverage player with three interceptions and 11 PDs. Blankenship continued to start in 2024, setting a career high in interceptions (4) and continuing to grow as a run defender. Let’s take a closer look at a potential extension for Reed Blankenship.

More OL Talk - Iggles Blitz
In my last piece I wrote about the Eagles having the best offensive line as we head into the 2025 season. Three of the starters are Pro Bowlers. The RG spot remains up for grabs so we’ll see how that battle plays out. LT Jordan Mailata is the only returning starter who has yet to make a Pro Bowl. So how good is Mailata? Pro Bowls are a useful tool in a general sense. They give you an idea of which players are considered to be good by media and fans. They do not tell us who the best players are. You need to find analysts who study all players thoroughly and have an expertise. There are a lot of talking heads on TV and podcasts who say things either as hot takes or simply as ill-informed opinions. Mailata is a good player. The question with him is how good. Brandon Thorn is an OL guru and here is how he had Mailata rated among LTs going into last season.

NFL salary cap changes could impact the way several teams do business - SB Nation
The Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints have gone out of their way to leverage future salary cap for players currently on their roster, shifting massive portions of their commitments into the future like buying on a credit card. With conversations around a new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL Players Association and the NFL set to begin in the next 12 months, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and some outspoken owners are attempting to change this practice.

The summer of Cooper DeJean: Why newfound popularity isn’t changing what makes Eagles young star special - CBS Sports
He’s arguably the most popular athlete as well — or at least on his way there. But through it all, don’t expect DeJean to change who he is. “I’m still continuing to work, and to try and be the best I can be at my job,” DeJean said. “There are a lot of things I can get better at coming off of last season, that I can be ready for this season. And those are the things that I’ve been working on this offseason. Becoming stronger, faster, being more comfortable out on the field, and working my techniques.

Eagles All Quarter Century team: 53-man roster - PhillyVoice
QB (3): Jalen Hurts, Donovan McNabb, Nick Foles. McNabb was more talented than Hurts, but I’m a sucker for quarterbacks who play well in the biggest moments, so Hurts is my starter. There was also a choice to be made between Foles and Carson Wentz at QB3. I chose Foles, since I know that the entire locker room will like him, and he’ll support Hurts and McNabb instead of wishing that he were the starter instead.

Eagles 2025 most important list: Dallas Goedert - NBCSP
The big issue in Goedert’s career has been his health. While he has routinely returned in time for the postseason, Goedert has missed a lot of games during the regular season during his career. Last year, he was limited to just 10 of 17 games in the regular season. Goedert had 42 catches for 496 yards and 2 touchdowns. But in the playoffs, Goedert ended up being the Eagles’ leading receiver with 17 catches for 215 yards and 1 touchdown. It was the second-most receiving yards an Eagle has ever had in a single postseason behind just Alshon Jeffery’s 219 in 2017. In his seven seasons with the Eagles, Goedert has 476 catches, 4,085 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s 10th in franchise history in catches, 13th in yards and 19th in touchdowns. And he’s the Eagles’ all-time leader in playoff receptions (52) and second in receiving yards (562) behind just DeVonta Smith. While the Eagles were 6-1 in those games without Goedert in the regular season last year, the veteran tight end again proved his worth in the playoffs.

A Commanders fan was heckled by Eagles players, and other highlights from DeVonta Smith’s celebrity softball game - Inquirer
“Y’all had that Week 15 win, when it don’t matter,” Goedert said to Rondo. “Y’all were hype for that game. We didn’t have a quarterback … Not gonna lie, y’all were paying people that game.” The Commanders are hoping to repeat their success next season, with a second-year quarterback in Jayden Daniels and their latest addition, Deebo Samuel. But Graham doesn’t see Samuel as much of a threat. As Rondo confidently boasted about his team, the Eagles legend took a massive shot at the wide receiver.

Seven-round NFL mock draft, Round 1: Building a win-now team from active players for 2025 season - NFL.com
6) LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: JALEN HURTS. Hurts’ two-way offensive skills should endear him to Raiders head coach Pete Carroll. 21) PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Barkley moves across the Keystone State to star for the Steelers after rushing for a ridiculous 2,005 yards last season in Philadelphia. 26) LOS ANGELES RAMS: A.J. BROWN. Brown is a force when healthy, scoring seven or more times in five of his six years in the league.

Eagles 2025 Training Camp Position Preview: Running Back - PE.com
Most of Will Shipley’s (5-11, 209 pounds) impact as a rookie came on special teams in 2024 where he tied for third in tackles and was fourth in snaps, but he displayed the explosiveness that caught the team’s attention in the pre-draft process on a 57-yard run against the Commanders in the NFC Championship that was followed by his first career touchdown. Offensively in the regular season, Shipley accounted for 117 yards of offense on 34 total touches.

Josh Sweat Lands On NFL Top 100 List - Arizona Cardinals
New outside linebacker Josh Sweat reached No. 95 for 2025, after his eight-sack season for the Eagles last year (his monster Super Bowl, with 2.5 sacks, adds to the legend but not the ranking since the voting is done during the regular season.) That players around the league respect Sweat in such a way — it was his first time on the list since he got into the league in 2018 — only helps emphasize the Cardinals nabbed quality with their big free-agent signing.

Ndamukong Suh wants you to learn how the sharpest minds in sports manage their money - The Athletic
Ndamukong Suh played 13 years in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Follow his new show, “No Free Lunch,” here. I know you think you know who I am. But you’re wrong. The way I was on the football field was just the way I had to be, to be successful. But I always wanted to be different from my peers. I never wanted to be known just for football, so it became a personal tagline of mine: I want to be more successful off the field than on it. When I played in the NFL, I loved to read contracts. At first, the reason was straightforward: I wasn’t happy with my rookie deal with the Detroit Lions, and I wanted to know what I was signing. I wanted to understand the details. But this practical interest blossomed into something more. I started reading all the contracts of other NFL defensive linemen so I knew what my peers were doing; that’s just good negotiation knowledge. That spilled over into my other passion — the business world — so I started devouring real estate contracts and venture capital deals. [BLG Note: Another former Eagle is starting a podcast.]

Washington Commanders key additions for 2025: Defense - Hogs Haven
Which new player will be the key to unlocking Washington’s defense in 2025? The John Portis Take: If the goal is to improve against the run and upgrade the 4-man rush, the answer is clear. It all starts up front. While I expect veterans Deatrich Wise and Eddie Goldman to provide a steady presence, to truly make the necessary improvement, they will need Javon Kinlaw, who was signed in free agency in March, to step up. Kinlaw has all the tools for the job. He is a 6’5”, 319-pound player with a powerful build and plus measurables. 35” arms provide leverage on interior lineman and match up well versus tackles. Along with these physical attributes, he possesses a quick first step and heavy hands. On certain plays, he can win using nothing but his size and power.

Reflecting on favorite Cowboys moments over the last 10 years - Blogging The Boys
As disappointing as that has been, the Cowboys still do a lot of winning in the regular season. We know it’s not the same, but there is some satisfaction to be had when your Sundays are filled with happiness during football season. They deliver in that regard. Even with the quote-unquote drought, the Cowboys still hold the highest winning percentage in the NFL in the Super Bowl era. It’s crazy that both of those marks belong to Dallas.

NFL ‘Bag’ Hall of Fame: Players who maximized contract leverage - ESPN
Calling card: Getting one or two over on Jerry Jones. Like Cousins, Prescott is a former fourth-round pick who wasn’t his team’s first choice as its quarterback of the future. During the 2016 draft, the Cowboys were reportedly interested in drafting Paxton Lynch or Connor Cook, only to be beaten to the punch by the Broncos and Raiders, respectively. Team owner Jerry Jones & Co. settled for Prescott with the 135th pick, and after Tony Romo went down in preseason with a back injury, the door was opened for the rookie. While Prescott proceeded to go 13-3 and lead the Cowboys to two division titles in his first three seasons, the front office wasn’t exactly eager to pay him when he became eligible for an extension in 2019. The Cowboys prioritized Ezekiel Elliott, who signed a six-year, $90 million contract. Prescott played out the final year of his rookie deal and waited. That decision probably has cost Jones nine figures in terms of lost leverage and extra money for Prescott. In 2019, the Cowboys reportedly offered him an average of $33 million per year on a new deal, albeit with no real details on the guarantee structure. He asked for $40 million, and the Cowboys balked. He played out the final year of his rookie deal, and after being one of the biggest bargains in football between 2016 and 2019, he got the franchise tag for $31.4 million in 2020.

Darren Waller coming out of retirement, being traded to Miami Dolphins - Big Blue View
Darren Waller will turn 33 in September. He has been pursuing a rap career, but has decided to give football one more try. Per ESPN, Waller told people close to him that he “missed football” and was returning for the love of the game, Per Adam Schefter, the Giants will receive a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick. Waller will sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins, who traded tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, worth up to $5 million.

Eagles schedule preview: Chicago Bears

New England Patriots v Chicago Bears

The Bears need a miracle. Did they get one?

When and Where: Week 13 at home

Last season: Oh boy. Drafted a QB that didn’t want to be there in part because of the offensive coordinator they had hired. In September their defensive coordinator resigned out of the blue. In November they fired the OC that their QB didn’t want to work with. And then later in November they fired their head coach, the first time in over 100 years of franchise history that the Bears fired a head coach during the season. As 5 win seasons go, that’s pretty exciting stuff for the neutrals.

Added: Joe Thuney, Dayo Odeyingo, Olamide Zaccheaus, Durham Smythe, Jonah Jackson

Lost: Coleman Shelton, Matt Pryor, Keenan Allen, DeMarcus Walker

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Colston Loveland, Luther Burden

Biggest question facing this team: Can Ben Johnson turn the Bears around? Can anyone?

Sometimes a franchise stuck in a rut hires a coach and everything changes. The Eagles saw this happen with Andy Reid, or more recently the Lions with Dan Campbell. The Bears’ situation is well beyond being stuck in a rut. The Bears have an organizational rot that needs to be exorcized. Perhaps the Chicago Pope, who was at the White Sox winning the World Series, can perform a second miracle and get the Bears a Super Bowl and reach sainthood.

Can Ben Johnson be the guy to turn it around? The Bears have a pretty good base of talent for to start with considering how dreadful this franchise is with Caleb Williams, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, and Colston Loveland, along with DJ Moore.

By the time this game is played in late November, the Bears offense could be dangerous. In Johnson’s first year as an OC in 2022, the Lions scored 35+ points three times in their first four games, then hit a rut for a few weeks, then scored 31+ points five times in their last nine games. A repeat of making an immediate improvement, defenses adjusting, then Johnson adjusting to those feels pretty realistic for the Bears this season. They won’t be good, but if Ben Johnson is the coach people expect him to be, they could be a tough out. The first year under Dan Campbell the Lions went 3-5-1 in the second half of the season, with three of those losses being by four points or less.

If this is a competitively bad team, what looks like an easy W in the summer becomes a tough game. The league didn’t help things by making this a Thursday Night game after the Eagles travel to Dallas.

Eagles schedule preview: Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers v Arizona Cardinals

Do the Chargers have enough juice?

When and Where: Week 14 in Los Angeles, so basically a home game

Last season: Committed just 9 turnovers during the regular season, then 4 in one playoff game.

Added: Mekhi Becton, Benjamin St-Juste, Tyler Conklin, Donte Jackson, Andre James, Da’Shawn Hand, Najee Harris, Mike Williams

Lost: Kristian Fulton, Josh Palmer, Poona Ford, Morgan Fox, Joey Bosa

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Omarion Hampton, Tre Harris

Biggest question facing this team: Do they have the horses to run with the top of the AFC?

It was no surprise that Jim Harbaugh immediately made the Chargers a winning team. They were 1st in scoring defense, and Justin Herbert had the most efficient season of his career. This is what Harbaugh does, he makes his team hell to play against and, even with Greg Roman as his play caller, gets good seasons out of his QBs.

But Harbaugh and Herbert alone won’t get the Chargers into the next tier in the AFC. This team needs more talent to move up from being good enough to win double digit games but not good enough to make a playoff run. They scored 17 or fewer points in 7 games last year, and 20% of their points scored were against the Patriots and Raiders in the final two games of the season. This is a team that employs Jalen Reagor.

The players they have brought in probably won’t help. Najee Harris? Bringing back Mike Williams? Tyler Conklin? These are not floor raising moves, let alone ceiling raising. Omarion Hampton might be a difference maker, but the Chargers aren’t just a RB away from leveling up to the top of the AFC.

No one can get more out of less than Jim Harbaugh. And while this should be a playoff team once again, it should not come as a surprise if the Chargers fail to make the playoffs.

Bleeding Green Nation in-5 instructions

The goal of the game is to guess the correct Eagles player with the help of up to five clues. We’ll mix in BOTH ACTIVE AND RETIRED PLAYERS this week. It won’t be easy to figure it out in one or two guesses, but some of you might be able to nail it. The game appears in slot #3 of the BGN layout each day this week and as noted above, will appear in this article exclusively. Additionally, there is a more general version of this at SBNation.com, which features a variety of random players that do not necessarily have Eagles history.

After you correctly guess the player, you can click “Share Results” to share how you did down in the comments and on social media. We won’t go into other details about the game as we’d like your feedback on it. How it plays, what you think of it, the difficulty level, and anything else you can think of that will help us improve this game. You can provide feedback in the comments of this article, or you can fill out this Google Form.

Enjoy!

Eagles schedule preview: Las Vegas Raiders

NFL: Las Vegas Raiders Minicamp

Candice Ward-Imagn Images

A commitment to mediocrity

When and Where: Week 15 at home

Last season: Antonio Pearce won fewer games in a full season in 2024 than he did as the interim coach in 2023.

Added: Alex Cappa, Geno Smith, Jeremy Chinn, Eric Stokes, Elandon Roberts

Lost: Trevon Moehrig, Jack Jones, Andre James, Divine Deablo, Gardner Minshew, Alexander Mattison

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Ashton Jeanty, Jack Bech

Biggest question facing this team: What exactly is the plan?

Mark Davis is a clown owner. Bringing in Tom Brady to hire Ben Johnson failed. But Pete Carroll, who has taken the previous two teams he has coached from out of the doldrums to winning a title, brings instant credibility, even if it doesn’t work out. It probably won’t work out.

Carroll is now the oldest coach in the history of the NFL. This man is not waiting around for a multi season rebuild. The Raiders are not in position for a short term rebuild. They had no QB, so they went out and got 34 year old Geno Smith, reuniting him with Carroll, where in two seasons they went 9-8 twice and got blown out in their only playoff game.

Achieving even that will be a difficult feat in 2025. The Raiders play in a tough division, in three of the past four seasons nine wins would get you 3rd place in the AFC West, and it would take a Patrick Mahomes ACL tear to have any chance of finishing 1st.

Brock Bowers is excellent and Ashton Jeanty should be too, but the rest of this offense isn’t good enough to play at a high level. And the coaching isn’t either. To run his offense Carroll hired Chip Kelly, who ended his NFL career losing 16 straight games against teams not coached by Jeff Fisher, and going 26 straight games without his offense scoring 30 points.

The Raiders could win 8 games, doubling their win total from last year, and it will be an impressive job by Carroll. But then where do they go from there? Or maybe by the time this game rolls around they’ll be stumbling to a 6 win season and Mark Davis is on his third coach in three seasons.

Eagles schedule preview: Washington Commanders

NFL: NFC Championship-Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles

Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

Meet the new WASTEAM, same as the old WASTEAM

When and Where: Week 16 in Maryland, then at home in Week 18

Last season: Best season since 1991. Gave up 55 points in the NFC Championship Game.

Added: Laremy Tunsil, Will Harris, Deebo Samuel, Javon Kinlaw, Jonathan Jones, Dietrich Wise

Lost: Jeremy Chinn, Benjamin St-Juste, Dante Fowler, Olamide Zaccheaus, Dyami Brown, Cornelius Lucas

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Josh Conerly, Trey Amos

Biggest question facing this team: Was 2024 a mirage?

The 2024 Washington Commanders had a great season, winning more games and going further in the playoffs than any season since winning the Super Bowl in 1991. But the 2024 Commanders were not a great team.

Washington was 10th in DVOA and point differential. That’s good, but not great. They went 2-4 against teams with a winning record in the regular season, with the two wins being against the early season Bengals and against a mostly Kenny Pickett lead Eagles, and they won those games by a total of eight points.

Behind Terry McLaurin they were lacking in skill position talent, Jayden Daniels was 3rd on the team in yards from scrimmage, entirely as their leading rusher. The defense stunk.

Credit the front office for realizing that despite their success, the roster needs help. But will the players they got actually help? Deebo Samuel is more of a concept than a reality, averaging 12.7 yards per touch in his first three seasons and 9.7 in his last three. Laremy Tunsil should be an upgrade from Brandon Coleman, but if a team that fired its offensive coordinator and offensive line coach and is willing to trade you their left tackle, that should be a big red flag. He’s already a walking yellow flag, Tunsil was the NFL’s most penalized player in 2024, in 2023 was the 5th most but only played 14 games, prorated he would have been the 2nd most, and in 2022 was the 5th most; he has committed 27 false starts in his last 52 games. The Javon Kinlaw signing was widely panned as the worst of the offseason. Though it occured midway last season, the trade for Marshon Lattimore isn’t looking good. He missed more games than he played for the Commanders, and got bullied by AJ Brown.

Dan Quinn and his group of try hard veterans were a success last year. The franchise feels that they have changed the culture. But have they? Acquiring past their prime name players and overpaying in free agency are classic Dan Snyder era WASTEAM moves.

Eagles schedule preview: Buffalo Bills

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Time to circle the wagons

When and Where: Week 17 in Orchard Park

Last season: Lost to the Chiefs in the playoffs. Again. The Bills have won four straight regular season games against the Chiefs, and have lost four straight playoff games against the Chiefs.

Added: Joey Bosa, Larry Ogunjobi, Tra’Davious White, Elijah Moore, Josh Palmer

Lost: Mack Hollins, Rasul Douglas, Amari Cooper, Von Miller

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Maxwell Hairston, TJ Sanders, Landon Jackson

Biggest question facing this team: How does this team get over the Chiefs hump?

Bringing in old and injured defenders, one of who was on the team from 2017 to 2023, and some warm bodies at WR is not going to move the needle for this team.

This is basically running it back for the Bills. Same head coach, same playcallers, no major roster overhaul. On the one hand, it makes sense to keep together a team that lost to the Chiefs by 3 points last year and lost to the Chiefs by 3 points the year before, and lost to the Chiefs in OT two years before that. The Bills are so close. But on the other hand, we’re on year four of the Bills are just one play away from the Super Bowl. Definition of insanity and all that.

This season should be Super Bowl or bust for Sean McDermott. He is the fourth longest tenured head coach and the three who were hired before him, Andy Reid, John Harbaugh, and Mike Tomlin have all won the Super Bowl.

Putting this game in Week 17 was a really poor choice by the NFL schedulers. The Bills have wrapped up the AFC East before Week 17 three times in the past five seasons; they should do it again this year. The NFC East has been far more competitive, and the Eagles face a potentially brutal schedule, but it shouldn’t be a shock if both these teams are pretty much locked in on their playoff seeding at kickoff. This game could have had a lot more juice earlier in the season, even by just a few weeks.
