Chicago Bulls discussing trading for former first overall pick this trade deadline

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson (1) drives to the basket past Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11) in the second half at Target Center.

The Chicago Bulls have been playing well lately as they are currently ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 21-22 record. They are sitting just four games back for the third seed in the conference as teams are all in a similar spot thus far. With the NBA Trade Deadline a few weeks away, there are some moves that the Bulls could be ready to make. Let’s take a look at one reported massive trade that there have been some discussions about.

The Chicago Bulls are interested in trading for Zion Williamson

Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley wrote an article about how Bulls executive Arturas Karnisovas has the ability to change the narrative surrounding the team’s front office. In the piece, he confirmed the reports about Chicago being in some talks with the New Orleans Pelicans to get Zion Williamson and/or Yves Missi. Below is the excerpt from his article:

“The Sun-Times confirmed a report that the Bulls have had ongoing talks with the Pelicans about players such as forward Zion Williamson and center Yves Missi. While the chatter around Williamson has quieted on the Pelicans’ end, there has been momentum around Missi. The question is, at what cost?”

Just because the talks have quieted down a bit does not mean they are officially dead. It is also interesting as there has been no official word of what the price tag would be for either player. Williamson is still only 25 years old and has been playing well this season as he is averaging 22.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 1.2 steals in 29.3 minutes per game thus far. For Missi, he is in his second NBA season and has seen an increase in minutes lately. He is averaging 5.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game behind rookie Derik Queen.

This is not the first time the team has been linked to the two-time All-Star. These two players indicate the Bulls are looking to get younger in the frontcourt and add players with multiple years of control. It will be intriguing to see if Chicago’s front office is able to pull the trigger on a major name like Williamson this trade deadline as they continue to fight for a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference right now.

Report suggests Chicago Bulls will keep trade candidate on roster through rest of season

The Chicago Bulls find themselves in a familiar place. After a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night, the Bulls are 22-22 and right in the mix for the play-in. That’s been pretty much where the Bulls have been for the past few years, refusing to rebuild.

Instead, they appear content with hovering around .500 and losing either in the play-in round or early in the NBA playoffs. That’s just the sad reality. This season, the Bulls could move some pieces ahead of the trade deadline to try and rebuild on the fly and acquire assets.

Names like Coby White and Nikola Vucevic have been floated around in potential deals. While those rumors continue to swirl, the latest report about Vucevic isn’t great news for those who want the team to rebuild.

The Chicago Bulls are expected to keep Nikola Vucevic

With Vucevic’s deal expiring after this season, the Bulls could at least get an asset in return before he heads to free agency. But that might not be the case and instead, the Bulls could keep him. At least that’s what one NBA reporter believes.

Per Jake Fischer, it’s expected that Vucevic will remain in Chicago through the trade deadline. Here is what Fischer wrote:

“It makes sense for the Bulls to be looking at possible centers of the future, knowing that Nikola Vucevic is in the final year of his contract. Multiple sources this week stressed that it’s now unlikely that Vucevic gets dealt before the deadline,” Fischer wrote in his latest report.

“It’s believed that Vucevic, should he enter free agency this summer after playing out his three-year deal with the Bulls, will generate some strong interest from teams looking at a longtime starter believed to be open to a more complementary role in the right situation … similar to Al Horford during last summer’s free agency.”

With the NBA trade deadline under two weeks away, things could change. However, as it stands now it feels like he will remain a member of the Bulls.

The 35-year-old is having a solid season averaging 17.0 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 42 games. He should get a lot of attention as a free agent next Summer. But if the Bulls can get something in return for him now, they should at least explore that opportunity.

This Chicago Bulls player is predicted to be an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve

The Chicago Bulls have not been able to get much team success, but there are a few players who are stepping up in the first half of the season. There is a lot of talent in the conference, and some surprise players could be named to the All-Star roster. One Chicago Bulls player has a legitimate chance to be named as one of the reserves, so let’s take a closer look at who it is and what he has done so far this year.

Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey is predicted to be named an All-Star this season

The NBA staff wrote an article where they predicted the Eastern Conference All-Star reserves. Two of the four writers selected Josh Giddey as one of the seven reserves for the conference. Steve Aschburner even listed him as his toughest decision to make the reserves. Below is what he said about the decision to put Giddey on his list of reserves:

“Look, I’ve never subscribed to the coach-driven perspective about “rewarding winning” for the All-Star Game. Rewarding winning is what the regular season and the playoffs are about. Siakam is a pedigreed, talented player we watched in the NBA Finals just seven months ago, currently stuck in an Indiana gap year not of his doing. Giddey’s hamstring injury has bumped him off most folks’ radar, but his near triple-double work for the Bulls (19.2 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 9 apg) has been a breakthrough worthy of this opportunity — assuming he’s healthy by mid-February.”

Giddey returned to the court on Thursday after not playing since Dec. 29 due to a hamstring injury. Entering Thursday’s action, he averaged 19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 0.9 steals with a 46.6/38.6/76.1 shooting split in 32.8 minutes per game. Giddey has never made an All-Star appearance in his first four seasons in the league. The NBA All-Star reserves will be named on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. It will be interesting to see if Giddey will have enough support to make the 2026 NBA All-Star Game roster.

Michael Jordan sends special message to Derrick Rose

Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose NBA

Saturday night will be a memorable one at the United Center when the Chicago Bulls host the Boston Celtics. The franchise will hang another jersey number in the rafters, officially retiring the number 1 for Derrick Rose.

The Chicago native and former NBA MVP becomes the fifth Bulls player to have his number retired from the franchise along with banners for Phil Jackson, Jerry Krause and Red Kerr. Rose was drafted by the Bulls in 2008 after just one year at Memphis and starring at Simeon High School. The rest is history as he enjoyed a NBA career up until he retired in 2024.

Now, he’s going to be immortalized in the United Center rafters and ahead of Saturday’s ceremony, a GOAT sent him a special message.

With Rose’s jersey going into the rafters, he’s receiving a lot of messages to congratulate him. But the best one arguably comes from Michael Jordan who recorded a video to say his congrats to Rose.

“Derrick, congratulations on the retirement of your jersey. Very happy for you. You have an unbelievable career,” Jordan says. “You really represented the city of Chicago, the Chicago Bulls, your family, and yourself very, very well. I’m very proud of you, and I’m very happy for your special night. Looking forward to coming to the United Center and seeing your jersey hanging up there with my jersey. Congratulations and enjoy your night.”

Chicago Bulls have framework for Coby White trade with Timberwolves: Report

Chicago Bulls Coby White

On Saturday night, an assist from Coby White allowed Kevin Huerter to make a three-point shot to give the Chicago Bulls a 114-111 win over the Boston Celtics in front of 22,093 fans at the United Center.

More News: Bears accused of hiding DJ Moore’s injury after concussion evaluation

White led the Bulls in scoring with 22 points on 32 minutes to go along with seven assists.

The win propelled Chicago back over .500 with a 23-22 record. The Bulls are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, and 1.5 games back from the Philadelphia 76ers for the sixth seed.

Despite moving up in the conference, the Bulls should consider trading at the deadline.

White, the No. 7 pick by the Bulls in 2019, appears to be the trade target other NBA teams want.

Per Jake Weinbach, the Minnesota Timberwolves want White. The No. 7 team in the Western Conference would be willing to offer a package of Mike Conley, Terrence Shannon Jr. and second-round picks.

“The Timberwolves pursuing Coby White with an offer around Mike Conley, Terrence Shannon Jr., and multiple second-round picks is a deadline deal worth monitoring,” Weinbach posted on X. “Minnesota and Chicago have reportedly remained in contact as the Wolves search the marketplace for a combo guard.”

White, 25, is averaging 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists this season.

This doesn’t seem like a great trade for Chicago. The Bulls should be able to land at least a first-round pick for White. Conley and Shannon won’t help the Bulls in their rebuild.

Second round picks won’t help Chicago either.

However, the Bulls front office doesn’t have a history of being great sellers at the trade deadline.

The Chicago Bulls entered Monday night’s game one game above .500 and on a four-game winning streak.

More News: Bulls have framework for Coby White trade with Timberwolves: Report

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped Chicago to 23-23 with a 129-118 win in front of 21,298 fans at the United Center.

With seven possible free agents this summer, including Coby White, the Bulls have to think wisely about selling at the trade deadline instead of stubbornly trying to compete for another spot in the Play-In Tournament. Chicago is currently in ninth place in the Eastern Conference and 1.5 games back from the Philadelphia 76ers for the No. 6 seed.

On Monday, center Nikola Vucevic sent a plea to the front office, hoping the Bulls will keep the team intact for one more run at the playoffs.

“As far as the deadline, there’s always talks, always things that could happen, and this is a unique year because of the contract situation for a lot of guys, but I do like this group,” Vucevic said, via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I enjoy being around these guys…

“There are a lot of guys that have a chip on their shoulders and want to prove people wrong because we’ve been doubted. I would like to see what we can do and where we can go this year, but the front office has to make decisions and we all understand that.”

The Bulls might do enough this spring to make it into the Play-In Tournament, but they are far away from being able to contend for an NBA championship. They don’t have the star power.

Chicago saw what star power can do when Luka Doncic dropped 46 points in 38 minutes on Monday night.

White was the Bulls’ leading scorer with 23 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Vucevic added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Both players could be traded for pieces that can help the Bulls get to the playoffs in the future.

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan makes concerning comment about front office

With a little over a week before the trade deadline on Feb. 5, the Chicago Bulls appear ready to stubbornly fight for a spot in the Play-In Tournament.

More News: Bulls have framework for Coby White trade with Timberwolves: Report

The Bulls suffered a 129-118 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night at the United Center, dropping Chicago’s record to 23-23. The loss killed a four-game winning streak for the ninth-place team in the Eastern Conference.

Center Nikola Vucevic made his feelings clear on what he thinks should happen at the trade deadline, hoping the front office gives their core one more opportunity to make a run in the spring.

That might happen whether Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas wants to tear down a roster with seven impending free agents or not.

Per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan told reporters that he spoke with the front office about their thinking before the trade deadline.

A “slow” trade deadline for the Chicago Bulls

Chicago is hearing crickets.

“From (Karnisovas) right now as it relates to real significant movement, it’s been pretty slow,” Donovan said. “There’s nothing that’s really transpired. When you get to this point you’ve always got to have partners in this thing.

“I think Arturas and (general manager) Marc (Eversley), the front office, are going to make decisions that are long-term good things for the organization. He mentioned to me (Monday) that there is just not a lot going on.”

Donovan knows what the Bulls need to do to get the ball rolling. However, it doesn’t appear this front office can find a trade partner—if they even know how.

There is a real possibility Karnišovas is going to let White walk into free agency this summer. Good luck re-signing him.

That would be a waste of capital for Chicago to lose its former first-round pick without getting anything in return.

Chicago Bulls considering extension over trade for key player: Report

USATSI_17590675-1200x600.jpeg

With a 23-23 record, the Chicago Bulls are considering their options before the trade deadline.

More News: Bulls’ Billy Donovan makes concerning comment about front office

The Bulls want to keep the core young pieces of its team intact. Ideally, Chicago would make a run for the postseason.

However, the Bulls must consider that their roster, only capable of being the ninth-best team in the Eastern Conference in late January, will have seven free agents this summer.

Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu are two key players that are set to test the free agency waters after the season.

Per Evan Sidery, Chicago is “strongly considering” extending Dosunmu this summer. That could mean the Bulls keep him and trade White, a more expensive player to sign in the offseason.

“The Bulls are more likely to trade Coby White than Ayo Dosunmu before the deadline,” Sidery posted on X. “Chicago is strongly considering signing Dosunmu to an extension this summer rather than trading him. White has generated strong interest during trade season from a handful of contending teams.”

Whatever the Bulls do, don’t expect an answer to come too quickly.

The Chicago Bulls have nothing going on

More News: Bulls have framework for Coby White trade with Timberwolves: Report

On Monday, Chicago head coach Billy Donovan suggested the front office doesn’t have much going on with a week before the trade deadline.

“From (executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas) right now as it relates to real significant movement, it’s been pretty slow,” Donovan said.

The Bulls need to make something happen.

Chicago is considering trading for a player that can help the Bulls compete for a playoff spot. The Bulls also know that letting White walk away for nothing in free agency would be a waste.

But that hasn’t stopped the Bulls from doing nothing before.

Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan catches stray from Lakers’ LeBron James

NBA: Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers

One of the tireless debates in the NBA is who is the greatest of all time between Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

More News: Bulls’ Billy Donovan makes concerning comment about front office

The two players were the best of their respective eras. However, because they didn’t play under the same league rules, it’s hard to compare the two.

There’s no debate that Jordan elevated the sport and made the NBA a global power. Frankly, without Jordan, James wouldn’t be as famous as he is today.

Still, James wants to make the case that he’s the best player of all time.

During a recent appearance on the “Mind the Game” podcast, James didn’t name Jordan, but suggested the era the Bulls’ legend played in wasn’t as difficult as the one James faces in the modern period.

“The game is different,” James said. “I want people and our fans to understand playing 82 games in the 80s and 90s is not the same as playing 82 games in the 2020s. It’s just not. The way we play, the level of pace and the speed we’re playing at, it’s a different game now. It’s a lot of soft tissue injuries that’s happened now because of it…

“When I first came in the league… the biggest concern for injuries was like a high ankle sprain… Now you see the new high ankle sprain is the calf. Hopefully we get a handle on that from a medical standpoint but I just want the fans to understand the game is a little different.”

The speed of the game is different, but the NBA has changed the game in order to make it faster.

Jordan had to drive to the basket in an era that allowed more physicality from the defense. James is well known for crying about fouls.

How would he survive playing against a team that employed the “Jordan Rules” to try and stop him?

James never had to face Isiah Thomas and a Detroit Pistons defense beating him up. He plays in an era that is even more generous to offensive players, allowing them to take extra liberties with ball handling.

Chicago Bulls tried to trade star to Celtics: Report

USATSI_22301298-1200x600.jpeg

Days after Nikola Vucevic argued for the Chicago Bulls to keep their core together for one more run at the playoffs, the center led the team in scoring with 25 points in a 113-110 loss to the lowly Indiana Pacers in front to 16,777 fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

More News: Bulls have framework for Coby White trade with Timberwolves: Report

The second consecutive loss dropped the Bulls to 23-24 on the season.

Chicago is on a downward trend before the trade deadline on Feb. 5, and the front office should be looking send players like Coby White to contenders so they build up ammo with draft capital.

The Bulls tried to do that earlier in the season.

Per Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, Chicago tried to take advantage of the Boston Celtics luxury tax situation. The Celtics are $12.1 million above the luxury tax, and the Bulls wanted to see if they could trade for sixth-man guard Anfernee Simons, who has a $27.68 million contract expiring.

The Bulls were willing to deal Vucevic.

“For example, earlier this season, well before Boston surged into second place in the East, the Chicago Bulls inquired on the possibility of trading center Nikola Vucevic for Simons and a Celtics first-round pick, which would have lowered Boston’s tax bill, but the Celtics weren’t interested, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.

The Celtics don’t plan to give up a first-round pick to avoid the luxury tax, and the Bulls still have an aging center on a team destined to hang in for a potential play-in spot.

“There are a lot of guys that have a chip on their shoulders and want to prove people wrong because we’ve been doubted. I would like to see what we can do and where we can go this year, but the front office has to make decisions and we all understand that.”

The Bulls didn’t help the front office’s case to keep him or White around after suffering a loss to the now 12-36 Pacers.

The Chicago Bulls entered the week on a four-game winning streak, earning a winning record with a 114-111 win over the Boston Celtics on Saturday night.

With an upward swing in momentum, there was a thought that the Bulls would try and make a push for the postseason with their core, and could even add help before the trade deadline on Feb. 5.

However, things have taken an ugly turn this week with a 129-118 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night and an embarrassing 113-110 defeat to the lowly Indiana Pacers.

Per Jake Weinbach, the Houston Rockets are interested in Coby White. However, the Rockets are “unwilling” to trade Tari Eason or a first-round pick for White.

Despite losing to the team with the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday night, White thinks the Bulls are good enough to make a playoff push.

White was asked if Chicago should try and add talent to the locker room at the trade deadline. The 2019 No. 7 pick is all for it.

“You ain’t never going to get me to say nah,” White said, via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “Obviously, we’ve proved it. We’ve beaten really good teams this year. We’ve just got to continue to figure it out, make that push. We’re still in the hunt. I think we’re, like, two or three games out of sixth, so we’re still in the hunt.

“We’ve just got to keep competing. Like I’ve said, I love being here. I love playing with these guys. We go out there every night and lay it on the line, and sometimes things don’t go your way, and sometimes they do.”

With the decision for Chicago’s front office in flux, Thursday night’s contest against the Miami Heat could be critical for White and the Bulls, as the teams play a three-game series in four days.

Chicago will host a 25-23 Miami Heat team (No. 8 in the Eastern Conference) that looks bound for the Play-In Tournament on Thursday. The Bulls will then travel to play the Heat on Saturday night to end their schedule for January before beginning the month of February against Miami on Sunday.

The Heat have crushed Chicago in the play-in in recent years. Maybe the front office decides to sell if they lose the series.

If the Bulls win, reinforcements could be coming.

Man, watching the Bulls right now is frustrating even from the outside looking in. That Pacers loss really stings - Indiana is 12-36 and you're trying to make a playoff push? That's the kind of loss that should make the front office seriously reconsider this "run it back" mentality.

The Donovan comments are pretty telling too. When your coach is publicly saying there's "nothing going on" with a week until the deadline, that's not a great look for the organization. Either AK genuinely can't find trade partners, or they're being too stubborn about what they want in return. Probably a bit of both.

I get why Vucevic and White want to stay together and make a run - players always want to compete. But the front office has to think bigger picture here. Letting White walk for nothing in free agency would be such a classic Bulls move, and not in a good way. The fact that Houston won't even offer a first-rounder is concerning though. Maybe his value isn't as high as Chicago thinks?

The Miami series this weekend should be interesting. Three games in four days against a team that's owned you in the play-in recently. If Chicago gets swept, hopefully that forces some action before the deadline.

At 23-24, they're kind of stuck in no man's land. Not good enough to really contend, not bad enough to get a premium draft pick. That's the worst place to be in the NBA.

Chicago Bulls announce Josh Giddey injury news on Thursday

The Chicago Bulls are back in action on Thursday in a home matchup against the 25-23 Miami Heat. Josh Giddey and Co. are coming off a 113-110 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, marking their second straight loss. The Bulls are back at United Center on Thursday, though, and have an opportunity to get back in the win column.

The bad news for Chicago is that Giddey will not play against Indiana. The 6-foot-7 guard was initially deemed questionable to play. However, Chicago downgraded him to out less than two hours before tip-off. Giddey has been ruled out due to a hamstring strain.

Chicago Bulls star Josh Giddey ruled out against Miami Heat

Giddey recently spent three weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. He returned on Jan. 22 and has since played four straight games for the Bulls.

Giddey returned to the starting lineup in Wednesday’s game. He logged 29 minutes of action, registering 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting, four rebounds, seven assists and one steal.

Giddey, however, will miss at least one more game for Chicago. This is after the team announced via the official injury report that Giddey will not play against Miami due to left hamstring strain/injury management.

It is important to note that Thursday’s game is the tail end of a back-to-back set for the Bulls. This likely factored into the team’s decision to give Giddey the night off.

Giddey is in the midst of a big year in Chicago. The 23-year-old is currently averaging 18.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 8.6 assists and 1.7 triples per game — all career-high marks.

With Giddey out, more minutes should be available for Isaac Okoro and Kevin Huerter. Giddey’s next chance to play will be on Saturday in a rematch against the Heat. That will be another back-to-back, though, with the Bulls and the Heat facing off again on Sunday. Both games will be played in Miami.

The Bulls enter Thursday’s matchup with a 23-24 record. As of writing, they are 10th in the Eastern Conference.

REPORT: Western Conference team eyeing trade for Coby White

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White (0) drives to the basket against the Charlotte Hornets during the second half at Spectrum Center.

With the 2026 NBA trade deadline approaching, the Chicago Bulls will continue to be a team that will be at the center of trade rumors both as buyers and sellers. Chicago is likely to make a few moves this upcoming deadline, hoping to revamp the roster a bit.

One name that keeps getting mentioned is guard Coby White.

The former North Carolina standout who was a draft pick of the Bulls in 2019, is a name that is rumored to be on the move. The Bulls are looking to get some assets to build through the draft and White is a name drawing interest from a few different teams.

That now includes a Western Conference team according to a new report.

The Houston Rockets are showing interest in Coby White

Among the teams that are showing interest are the Houston Rockets, a team in title contention this year. The Rockets are one of two Western Conference teams according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times:

“The Bulls’ front office remained active in trade talks Tuesday, with guard Coby White still the piece most often discussed, a source said. The Timberwolves and Rockets are still in the mix, but it’s not just a two-team race as the trade deadline Feb. 5 approaches.”

“The ongoing issue is the tightrope he is trying to walk as he looks to deal a player such as White, who is on an expiring contract, for young talent on the same timeline as guard Josh Giddey and forward Matas Buzelis.

That’s why names such as Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, Rob Dillingham and former Lincoln Park and Illinois star Terrence Shannon Jr. have been floated in some capacity.”

White’s $12.8M salary is something the Rockets would have to figure out in terms of acquiring him. But getting some players to salary match it would make sense, giving the Bulls some talent in return.

We are just under a week away until the deadline and the rumors are going to start heating up even more for the Bulls.
