Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted yesterday that faked interest in Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford in order to raise the amount the Sox would offer him.

Cashman said this:
"I actually had dinner with the agent to pretend that we were actually involved and drive the price up," Cashman said. "The outfield wasn't an area of need, but everybody kept writing Crawford, Crawford, Crawford, Crawford. And I was like, 'I feel like we've got Carl Crawford in Brett Gardner, except he costs more than $100 million less, with less experience.' "

Gardner arguably ended up having a better season than Crawford.

As much as I hate the Yankees, I gotta admit, they're pretty freakin' smart.

Business is business. Smart business is smart business. :P

Yeah this was a really smart move by the Yankees. But it would have been a ton smarter, if they never told that they did this. They should have kept this all a secret.

I actually agree with you. This could have been a useful tactic in the future, but now most teams won't take them seriously anymore. It's not smart for a magician to share his secrets.

Personally, I'd say the only reason they are saying this now is just to sort of distract the Red Sox, and I'm sure the Yankees love to make the Red Sox look stupid whenever they can. This could be a big distraction, I'm sure they'll be interviewing all kinds of different people in the Red Sox organization, and of course, Carl Crawford. Maybe the Yankees are hoping the Red Sox will take their eyes off the prize. :P
