Titans sign Trevor Siemian, cut Tim Boyle and activate Lloyd Cushenberry

gettyimages-2172715813.jpg

The Tim Boyle experiment is over. The Tennessee Titans announced today that they have cut Boyle and signed Trevor Siemian. Boyle was never going to make this team, so it makes sense to go ahead and move on from him now. This will give them some time to get another look at Siemian, who spent a couple of stints with the Titans last season.

There is a good chance the Titans aren’t done making moves in the quarterback room. Brandon Allen is the number two for now, but it has already been reported that they will be looking around the league to see if they can upgrade. Keep an eye on what happens with the Cleveland Browns and the 72* quarterbacks they have on their roster.

The Titans also activate center Lloyd Cushenberry from the PUP list. Cushenberry is now eligible to be on the practice field. It is probably a long shot to expect him to be on the field in the joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons tomorrow and Wednesday, but this gives Cush a chance to be ready to go in week 1 when the Titans take on the Denver Broncos.

*Not the actual number.

Should the Titans trade for a backup quarterback?

imagn-26817811.jpg

The Tennessee Titans lost their first preseason game 29-7 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There’s more reason for optimism than the score suggests. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward and the first-team offense strung together a 65-yard touchdown drive before exiting.

A big reason why the Titans suffered a blowout defeat was the play of backup quarterbacks Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle. Allen entered the contest after Ward and went 6-of-12 for 62 yards and an interception. His turnover occurred on a tipped ball. He wasn’t terrible, but he performed below the standard of a backup QB.

Boyle replaced Allen and was downright atrocious. The former UConn and Eastern Kentucky signal-caller completed 4-of-13 passes for 24 yards and two interceptions, including a late pick-six. It’s incredible to think Boyle is somehow entering his eighth professional season in the NFL.

According to @CBSSports, out of 90 QBs that played in the Preseason, here's where the #Titans backups ranked in terms of

Passer Rating:
• Brandon Allen: 80th
• Tim Boyle: 89th

Comp %:
• Brandon Allen: 70th
• Tim Boyle: 84th

— Zach Lyons (@TheZachLyons) August 11, 2025

The Titans released Boyle and signed Trevor Siemian on Monday. Siemian, who’s now on his third stint in Nashville, is undeniably better than Boyle. It’s unclear if the Titans will carry two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Will Levis is on season-ending IR with a shoulder injury. Allen is currently Ward’s backup, and we don’t envision Siemian winning that job.

Allen was brought in because he knows Brian Callahan’s offense. He previously played under Callahan for the Cincinnati Bengals. His knowledge of the offense has been valuable as Ward continues acclimating to the NFL.

But it would be a disaster if the Titans actually need Allen or Siemian to play this season. The rebuilding Titans are all-in on Ward’s development. If Ward got injured, it’s fair to debate whether they should even bother truly trying to compete in his absence.

If the Titans are looking to acquire a backup quarterback, there are usually some available around cut-down day for trade (The Titans traded Malik Willis around the same time last year). Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell could be one worth monitoring. He’s losing the QB2 battle in Vegas and was drafted by current Tennessee assistant GM Dave Ziegler.

Other potential targets could include Tyson Bagent, Stetson Bennett, and Will Grier. Should the Titans bother trying to upgrade the backup QB spot, or should Ward be the only signal-caller who matters in Tennessee this season? It’s a fair question.

Titans injury updates on Sneed, Cushenberry, Winston and Sweat

gettyimages-2178239775.jpg

Brian Callahan provided some injury updates yesterday on a few guys that are pretty important to the Tennessee Titans this season. Center Lloyd Cushenberry could start some side work this week. That’s an encouraging sign as he works his way back from an Achilles injury. The offensive line has looked solid so far, but it will be better with Cush back out there.

The news is not as positive on L’Jarius Sneed. There isn’t any new news, but it doesn’t sound like he’s all that close to being back on the field. How mad are we all going to be when he starts the season on short-term injured reserve? No one has said that, but it just feels like that is what is going to happen.

Rookie safety Kevin Winston Jr. continues to battle some soreness. It seems that it is related to his recovery from the ACL injury last season. That should probably be expected coming back from that surgery. I’d be surprised if he goes this week at all in the practices against the Atlanta Falcons.

T’Vondre Sweat apparently had a tonsillectomy, according to Jim Wyatt. If that had been reported before, I missed it. That’s a pretty tough thing to recover from when you are an adult.

The Titans will hold joint practices with the Falcons Tuesday and Wednesday.

Report: Titans to claim Brian Asamoah on waivers

gettyimages-2193826663.jpg

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is reporting that the Tennessee Titans plan to claim linebacker Brian Asamoah on waivers. Asamoah, a former third round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, was waived yesterday.

The #Titans plan to claim linebacker Brian Asamoah off waivers, per sources.

The Vikings’ former third-round pick was released Tuesday, now gets fresh start in Tennessee, which is first in the claim order. pic.twitter.com/OygM2Y2PKp

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) August 13, 2025

The Titans hold the top waiver spot based on last year’s finish, so if they do indeed claim Asamoah, he will be added to their roster.

Asamoah played in 16 games last year with the Vikings. He had just 11 tackles and one forced fumble. There is certainly potential there, but it obviously did not work out for him in his time with the Vikings.

This move probably doesn’t move the needle very much for the defense, but it is further evidence that they are committed to continuing to churn the roster to find the best 53 players they can have when they head to Denver to play the Broncos in week one.

Asamoah was the 66th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

Identity questions, Cam Ward’s confidence and other Titans bullets

gettyimages-2229304227.jpg

The Tennessee Titans wrapped up two days of joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons yesterday. By all accounts, the Titans were whooped on day one and at least held their own on day two. This is a young team with a rookie quarterback. It is going to take some time for them to figure it out.

  • Paul Kuharsky says this team is lacking an identity. That is a bit of a concern, but it is still early. Ultimately, this team’s identity and success are going to be defined by Cam Ward. I feel pretty good about that.
  • Speaking of Ward, he said this team will have a top 10 offense and has the best wide receiver group in the league:
Cameron Ward said he feels like the #Titans will have a top 10 offense and his WR group is top in the league.

— TURRON DAVENPORT (@TDavenport_NFL) August 13, 2025
  • Listen, I appreciate Ward sticking up for his guys, but this WR group is much closer to the bottom than the top.
  • Along those lines, Easton Freeze says Ward is the only one who is not trying to temper the expectations for this team. Easton likes it. I do too. You want your quarterback to have the ultimate confidence in himself and his teammates. Ward has that.
  • Thoughts go out to Jim Wyatt, who recently lost his dad. Wyatt is a great dude and does a great job covering the Titans.
  • ICYMI, the Titans claimed Brian Asamoah on waivers yesterday from the Minnesota Vikings and cut Otis Reese.
  • Taylor Swift joined Jason and Travis Kelce on their “New Heights” podcast last night. Will you be giving that a listen?

Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett won’t play tonight for Titans

gettyimages-2189589387.jpg

Easton Freeze is reporting that the Tennessee Titans will hold out both Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett tonight in their second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons:

The Titans will keep some veteran starters on the bench tonight against the Falcons, including WRs Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett.

Cam Ward will get some run with rookies Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike in the series or two he plays.

Also means depth receivers such as Xavier…

— Easton Freeze (@eastonfreeze) August 15, 2025

As Easton points out, that bumps everyone in the receiver rotation up a couple of spots. One of the things that I am most excited about seeing tonight is how the young receivers perform with Ward. Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor have flashed in practices. Can they make some plays when the game (kind of) matters? They will get that opportunity tonight.

Xavier Restrepo is another guy Easton mentions. He has been a bit of a fan favorite, but is probably a long shot to make the initial 53-man roster. Hopefully, he has shown the Titans enough to bring him back on the practice squad, but not so much that another team claims him if the Titans do end up cutting him.

The game tonight kicks off at 6 PM Central from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

WATCH: Gunnar Helm with a great touchdown catch

imagn-26702052.jpg

It sure looks like the Tennessee Titans got a steal when they drafted Gunnar Helm in the fourth round. He has reportedly been really good in camp, and he made a really nice contested catch for a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons:

That's TUFF @gunnar_helm 💪

📺: #TENvsATL on @WKRN & NFL+ pic.twitter.com/DyA4JpiSQ1

— Tennessee Titans (@Titans) August 16, 2025

Josh Norris of Undedog pointed out that Helm has been making plays like that dating back to his days at Texas:

Gunnar Helm!

he made the kind of catch all last season

Seam, twist, contested grab

— Josh Norris (@JoshNorris) August 16, 2025

Helm is currently TE2 behind Chig Okonkwo, but if he keeps making plays like he did tonight, they are going to find a way to at least get both of those guys on the field – especially when you consider how thin they are at wide receiver.

The touchdown throw came from Brandon Allen, who came on in relief of Cam Ward. Ward finished the night just 2 for 7 but had a beautiful throw to Van Jefferson that he dropped. I will have more on Ward’s night later.

Cam Ward’s night, Van Jefferson’s drop and other Titans bullets

gettyimages-2229510954.jpg

The Tennessee Titans came away with a 23-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night. Wins and losses in the preseason don’t mean anything, but you still don’t want to end it 0-3, especially coming off the year the Titans just had.

  • Cam Ward ended up playing three series in this game and going 2 for 7 for 42 yards. He got 35 of those yards on the first play of the game to Elic Ayomanor. The numbers would have been quite a bit different had Van Jefferson been able to haul in what was one of the best passes Ward has thrown to this point
This Cam Ward incompletion on the stat sheet is just an unbelievable throw. Wow.

Still can't believe Van Jefferson dropped this. pic.twitter.com/k7urpYH3tp

— Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) August 15, 2025
  • There was some debate in the Twitter streets about whether or not that should be considered a drop. Austin Stanley of A to Z claimed that Calvin Ridley doesn’t catch that ball but half the time:
Calvin Ridley doesn’t bring that in but ~ half the time

— Austin Stanley (@AustinStanley81) August 15, 2025
  • That is an absurd statement to me. I accused him of being a Williamson County homer #IYKYK. The bottom line here is that an NFL receiver has to make that catch. That was a beautiful throw that he got both of his hands on.
  • Jim Wyatt highlighted Cedric Gray in his “6 things that stood out” article. Gray was really good last night after James Williams was really good in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The inside linebacker spot next to Cody Barton is still up for grabs.
  • Why are the Titans still giving Jha’Quan Jackson reps as a return man? He was bad at it last year and has been bad at it so far in the preseason.
  • The special teams overall have been pretty underwhelming. Joey Slye missed an extra point and failed to hit the landing zone on a kickoff last night. Johnny Hekker has been Shankapotomous so far, and there are still questions in the return game. Bringing in John Fassel was supposed to fix the special teams issues, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Titans vs. Falcons preseason game two open thread

gettyimages-2213818604.jpg

The Tennessee Titans play their second preseason game tonight against the Atlanta Falcons down in Georgia. Brian Callahan has said that the starters will likely play two series again tonight. Cam Ward played two series last week, with his second series coming in the second quarter. That was because the defense couldn’t get off the field Saturday night in Tampa. Hopefully, they will show better tonight.

As always, all eyes will be on Ward in this game. It was announced earlier today that both Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett will sit out tonight. That gives the three pass catchers the Titans took on day three of the draft, Chimere Dike, Elic Ayomanor, and Gunnar Helm, who have been doing some good things in practice, a bigger opportunity tonight with Ward.

Another guy this team is really going to need to show up this season is second round pick Femi Oladejo. His practices have reportedly shown some mixed results. Let’s see a sack from Femi tonight!

Use this thread to discuss the game.

Things to watch, transforming bodies, and other Titans bullets

gettyimages-2185838788.jpg

The Tennessee Titans play a football game today, well, kind of. While we wait for the 6 PM Central kickoff tonight from Atlanta, here are some things to read from around the internet.

  • Jim Wyatt has his “Six Things to Watch” for tonight. It starts, of course, with Cam Ward. One thing that Wyatt highlights, which we haven’t talked much about, is who will be the returner for the Titans. Jha’Quan Jackson got work last week, but I’d like to see someone else this week because Jackson had his shot last year.
  • Turron Davenport has a story on Jeffery Simmons and JC Latham transforming their bodies this offseason. In the time of year when everyone is “in the best shape of his life,” there is something here with both Simmons and Latham. Both guys were able to play plenty of snaps last year, but this should help them play at a higher level as the season goes along.
  • Easton Freeze has a long article on how the Titans are looking to define their culture. It’s a really good article breaking down the efforts the organization is making to create a positive culture.
  • In the end, Easton points out that their culture is really going to come down to Cam Ward. Winning breeds a positive culture. If the Ward is the star the organization thinks he is, the culture inside that building will be phenomenal.
  • Jim Harbaugh just got a 10-year show-cause order from the NCAA for the sign stealing that was happening while he was the head coach at Michigan. That doesn’t start until 2028 because he is currently under another show-cause order. What a worthless penalty that is.

Jeffery Simmons in another camp fight; shoves Cam Ward

gettyimages-2185687266.jpg

It’s getting old with Jeffery Simmons at this point. Every fight that happens, whether it be in a regular training camp practice or in joint practices with another team, has Simmons right in the middle of it. The Tennessee Titans try to push him as a leader, but a defensive leader doesn’t shove the team’s starting quarterback.

To be fair to Simmons, there was some talk that he playfully shoved Ward, but it really doesn’t matter. You cannot put your hands on the starting quarterback. Any rookie knows that. Simmons is far from a rookie at this point. The whole offense jumped to Ward’s defense.

It would be so much easier to put up with some of the nonsense from Simmons if he were the dominant player he is supposed to be. We haven’t seen that from him lately. He hasn’t had more than 8 sacks in a season since 2021. He and the team will give you the injury and double-team excuse, but quite frankly, that is getting old at this point.

Neither Simmons nor Ward talked after practice.

Winning with a rookie QB, Callahan almost fired and other Titans bullets

imagn-26698572.jpg

  • Jeremy Fowler and Turron Davenport have a really good article about the difficulty of winning with a rookie quarterback. Something I didn’t realize, Andrew Luck is the only number one pick in the “common draft era” to have a winning record.
  • The article also mentions that the last two coaches who started a number one draft pick at quarterback in their rookie season, Frank Reich (Bryce Young) and Matt Eberflus (Caleb Williams), have been fired before the season ended.
  • On that front, the article mentions that there was serious consideration to fire Brian Callahan after last season, but the front office ultimately decided to give Callahan “the opportunity to grow as a head football coach.” We will see if that ultimately pays off.
  • The Tennessee Titans added journeyman defensive tackle T.J. Smith to the roster yesterday. He takes the spot of defensive lineman Philip Blidi, who was waived on Sunday.
  • Rookie RB Kalel Mullings has an opportunity to make the roster with Tajae Spears currently injured. He will need to get better in pass protection to secure that spot, according to Paul Kuharsky.
  • It will be interesting to see what is said about the shoving match between Jeffery Simmons and Cam Ward yesterday. It’s not the biggest deal in the world that it happened, but Simmons has got to stop losing in training camp practices.
