Cam Ward’s Madden rating is trash

Tennessee Titans Training Camp

The disrespect continues.

Madden 26 ratings are out, and you won’t be surprised to know that the Tennessee Titans' rookie quarterback did not get a good mark. Ward got the second lowest rating on Madden of any first round pick, only ahead of Jaxson Dart. Ward got a 72. Dart got a 68.

Here is the Madden 26 rating for every 2025 first round pick

It is going to be fun to watch Ward prove all of the doubters wrong.

Here is the full list of Madden ratings for the Titans' rookies:

Full #Madden26Ratings for #Titans rookie class:

QB Cam Ward 72
EDGE Femi Oladejo 74
S Kevin Winston Jr 71
WR Elic Ayomanor 71
WR Chimere Dike 70

TE Gunnar Helm 67
RB Kalel Mullings 70
CB Marcus Harris 69

It is a little surprising to me that Femi Oladejo gets the highest rating in the class. Oladejo has a plenty of upside, but there is no doubt he is going to need some work on refining his skills working off the EDGE.

On a funny side note, Jackson Slater’s rating was initially leaked as a 75. That was either an error, or it was changed after the initial run. Slater had a pretty funny response to it on Twitter:

Wednesday practice observations and other Titans bullets

Tennessee Titans Training Camp

Your daily roundup of Titans news and notes.

  • Jim Wyatt offers his observations from Tennessee Titans practice on Wednesday, where Cam Ward called the offense “mid.” For those of you who aren’t teenagers and don’t have any in the house, that means it wasn’t very good.
  • I’d like to offer once again that you shouldn’t be overly concerned about the offense in the early stages of training camp. There are going to be some bumps with a rookie quarterback. Now, if after the second preseason game we are still having similar conversations, that will be a time to express some concern.
  • PFF called the Titans one of their 5 dark-horse teams that could surpass their 2025 win total. FanDuel currently has the Titans at 5.5. PFF likes them to win 6.3 games. So much of that depends on Ward, but I like them to win 7 or more.
  • Over at ESPN, Bill Barnwell looked at players on each team who are worth a first round pick. This is a fun exercise in practice, but some of Barnwell’s projections feel a little crazy. For the Titans, he said Ward could get two first rounders and Jeffery Simmons could get one. Eh. Maybe.

Jon Robinson calls the A.J. Brown trade an “organizational decision”

Arizona Cardinals v Tennessee Titans

Chase and Big Joe had a great interview with the former Titans GM.

Chase and Big Joe had former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson on their show this morning. To my knowledge, it was the first interview JRob has done since he was fired as the Titans' GM. If you haven’t heard the interview yet, you can check it out here. They did a great job asking him the questions that fans wanted to hear.

To Robinson’s credit, he was pretty candid in his answers. Of course, there are things that he cannot talk about because he most likely signed an NDA after he was fired. Robinson, when asked about the infamous A.J. Brown trade, said it was an organizational decision. You can read into that what you will, but it confirms that no one in that room was shocked when it went down on draft night. It’s still safe to say that Mike Vrabel, even though he knew it was a possibility, was not thrilled when it actually happened.

They also asked him about Isaiah Wilson. He blamed a lot of that on COVID, which is probably somewhat fair. Robinson basically said that the person they got once he was drafted was different than the person they thought they were getting. No surprise there.

There was quite a bit of talk about Caleb Farley as well. Robinson attributed the lack of success Farley had as a player to the knee injury he suffered and the tragedy with his house, where his father died. That is probably somewhat fair, but the process of selecting Farley was bad, coming off the major back injuries he had in college.

JRob is a really likeable dude. It’s a shame things didn’t work out for him here. It will be interesting to see if he gets another shot.

Micah Parsons could request a trade from Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants v Dallas Cowboys

This is an interesting development.

This is something to watch. Four-time Pro Bowl EDGE rusher Micah Parsons is contemplating requesting a trade, or even severing his relationship with the Dallas Cowboys, whatever that means, according to Dianna Russini:

BREAKING: The Micah Parsons-Cowboys relationship has deteriorated to the point where the star pass rusher is considering drastic measures which could include a trade request or even a declaration that he is severing his relationship with the team, per multiple league sources… pic.twitter.com/7Yujmv4JQ2

— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) August 1, 2025

Russini wrote about the breakdown between Parsons and the Cowboys here. Here is the meat of that article:

Among the key issues: Parsons negotiated directly with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over multiple days in the spring, and the team believed it had a deal, multiple league sources said. When Parsons’ agent pushed back and attempted to negotiate further, the Cowboys declined to engage with him and told the pass rusher to honor the agreement he had made.

If there is a trade to be made here, the Tennessee Titans should get on the phone and at least figure out what it would take to acquire Parsons. They desperately need help at EDGE rusher. Parsons is one of the best in the game. Brian Callahan said this morning that there are very few game-wrecking EDGE guys in the league. Parsons is certainly one of those guys.

At the end of the day, the Titans probably don’t get involved even if Parsons is traded. We know that Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi love their draft picks. It would take multiple first round picks plus some to acquire Parsons.

It would also take a massive contract, but that wouldn’t be an issue for the Titans who currently have close to $30 million in cap space for this season and around $84 million in 2026, according to OverTheCap.

Titans injury updates: Calvin Ridley gets a rest day on Friday; T’Vondre Sweat day to day

Tennessee Titans Mandatory Minicamp

Good news on the Calvin Ridley front

Calvin Ridley left Tennessee Titans’ practice earlier this week with what appeared to be a calf injury. It was later reported that he was just cramping. If you have been a Titans fan for any period of time, you know how scary it is when receivers leave with some type of soft tissue issue. We have seen things that looked minor end up costing guys weeks and weeks.

That doesn’t appear to be the case with Ridley. Brian Callahan said this morning that Ridley was just cramping, but that they will give him a day off today for rest. Callahan has been really upfront about injuries since he got here, so we can take him at his word on this one. I don’t need to tell you how important Ridley is to this team in 2025.

Callahan did say that T’Vondre Sweat is day to day with an injury and will not practice today. Again, no reason for a ton of concern here unless this thing stretches out for more than a week.

JRob speaks, Cam’s camp so far and other Titans bullets

“It’s not really about bouncing back, it’s about getter better every day,” Ward said. “I think we just have to get better at the little things, especially myself. We all have a lot of stuff to continue to get better at, and I’m excited for it.”
  • Brian Callahan continues to praise Ward’s mental makeup:
“It’s just sort of how he’s wired,” Callahan said of Ward. “Everything about his mental makeup and how he operates when he makes mistakes is everything you’d want to see from a coaching perspective, and so I feel really good about how he’ll respond to any negativity in general.”
  • Callahan might have been saying the same things about Will Levis at this time last year. I honestly don’t remember, but we saw in the first two weeks of the season last year that Callahan and Levis weren’t on the same page from a mental makeup standpoint. That won’t be an issue this year.
  • Paul Kuharsky says that Peter Skoronski and JC Latham have shone in camp so far. That’s really good news for what the Tennessee Titans hope is going to be a much improved offensive line.
  • I’d sad how true this is:

Calvin Ridley already has chemistry with Cam Ward

Tennessee Titans Training Camp

It’s a good sign to already have QB1 and WR1 on the same page.

Last year, in Tennessee Titans’ training camp, it was widely reported that Will Levis and Calvin Ridley were having trouble getting on the same page in training camp. At the time, I was quick to dismiss it as no big deal because of the newness factor with the system, Levis as the starter, and Ridley in his first camp with the team. Well, it turned out there was something to it. Ridley totaled just twelve catches in the team’s first six games before having ten catches in the seventh game against the Detroit Lions.

The good news for this year is that Cam Ward and Ridley have had a great connection from the jump. Check out this play from the Titans’ practice at Nissan Stadium on Saturday:

There was also this from today’s practice:

— Zach Lyons (@TheZachLyons) July 30, 2025

Calvin Ridley is easily the best weapon the Titans have on offense. It would serve Ward well to rely on him early and often, especially at the beginning of his career.

Ridley did end the season with solid numbers - 64/1,017/4, but those numbers should all go up with another year in the system, better quarterback play, and better offensive line play.

Titans WR Xavier Restrepo isn’t a lock to make the 53-man roster

Tennessee Titans Training Camp

Xavier Restrepo is battling to make the Tennessee Titans’ roster

There was a lot of fanfare when the Tennessee Titans signed wide receiver Xavier Restrepo in undrafted free agency. Understandably so. Restrepo was a draftable talent who slid to UDFA status after a poor athletic performance at his pro day. More notably, he was the go-to target last season at Miami for Titans’ No. 1 overall quarterback Cam Ward, producing 69 receptions for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns.

We’re a handful of practices into Titans training camp and the Restrepo buzz hasn’t been quite as loud as once predicted. Ward was outstanding at Saturday’s “Back Together” session at Nissan Stadium, his best practice yet. You didn’t hear Restrepo’s name. He’s been running almost exclusively with the reserve offense.

Restrepo made his most notable play of training camp at Tuesday’s practice. The former Hurricanes standout caught a would-be touchdown on a deep post route. No. 3 quarterback Tim Boyle threw the ball, per Parker Kelley. It said something about Restrepo’s current standing on the roster.

Important note: Xavier Restrepo is mostly taking reps with the 3rd team offense. That plants a little bit of doubt in my head of him making the roster. #TitanUp

— Connor Nute (@c_nute15) July 29, 2025

It’s also worth noting Titans head coach Brian Callahan praised Restrepo before Wednesday’s practice, the second in pads. “There’s something about him as a football player that you can’t necessarily measure,” Callahan said. “He just has a knack for finding space and getting open. The ball tends to find him. He had a big one [catch] yesterday. He’s just a good football player.”

The preseason is fast approaching. It’s imperative that Restrepo be productive throughout the exhibition. His style of receiver, a shifty slot pass catcher, tends to feast in the preseason. Doing so would increase his 53-man roster chances.

— Zach Lyons (@TheZachLyons) July 30, 2025

The Titans probably have six locks at wide receiver. Calvin Ridley, Tyler Lockett, Elic Ayomanor, and Chimere Dike are unquestioned locks. Van Jefferson is a near-lock, and Bryce Oliver is an outstanding special teams player. Restrepo is probably battling for that seventh spot, and there’s no guarantee the Titans keep seven.

Restrepo is fighting to make the Titans’ roster.

Titans happy with Brandon Allen; Will monitor other quarterbacks that become available

Tennessee Titans Mandatory Minicamp

An interesting nugget from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler

One of the more surprising things about this offseason for the Tennessee Titans was that they did not add a better veteran quarterback to be the backup. The lack of action there was the first thing that told us they were drafting Cam Ward. He was always going to be the starter, but it would still have been nice to have a better veteran behind him as the backup.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN spent some time with the Titans last week, and one of the things he noted was that while they are happy with what Brandon Allen has done so far, they will continue to monitor other quarterbacks that become available over the next month. Fowler said they will monitor both free agents and potential trade targets.

This makes a lot of sense. It would be best for the backup to have been here for the entire offseason, but if there is someone out there with more upside than Allen, they should absolutely try to bring that guy in.

Hopefully, none of this matters because Ward stays healthy and plays well, but it is good to know that they are still hoping to upgrade the position.

5 free-agent cornerbacks the Titans could consider signing

Los Angeles Chargers v Pittsburgh Steelers

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly interested in adding a cornerback

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly interested in adding a veteran cornerback in free agency, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Fowler wrote a terrific article that had a bunch of interesting nuggets in it. In addition to corner, the Titans are looking at potential backup quarterbacks and pass rushers.

Adding a veteran cornerback would be understandable. L’Jarius Sneed remains on the PUP and there should be legitimate concern over his effectiveness given how little football he’s played since joining the Titans. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is currently CB1 in Nashville and Darrell Baker Jr. is starting opposite him. Roger McCreary is the nickel corner.

The potential success of the Titans’ cornerback room may solely rely on Sneed. There are various free-agent corners that would improve Dennard Wilson’s secondary. We’ve identified five intriguing options in particular.

Asante Samuel Jr.

Still just 25, Asante Samuel Jr. is the highest-upside corner available. He’s still on the market because he’s recovering from last year’s season-ending injury. Samuel Jr. is undersized, but has routinely played boundary corner, which is where the Titans are searching for help.

Trayvon Mullen

Trayvon Mullen was a 2019 second-round pick who hasn’t met expectations. The former Clemson standout spent the previous campaigns with the Baltimore Ravens, but he didn’t actually play a regular-season snap. Mullen would be a buy-low candidate with untapped potential if he’s healthy.

Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore probably prefers to join a Super Bowl contender. The five-time Pro Bowler isn’t his elite self at 34, but still turned in an effective campaign for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. Gilmore is searching for his sixth different team in as many years.

Kendall Fuller

Kendall Fuller was released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this offseason. The 30-year-old cornerback had a stellar coverage grade of 62.4 last season, per Pro Football Focus, but the Dolphins didn’t think he was worth a bloated salary anymore. Fuller should find a suitor shortly.

Rasul Douglas

Rasul Douglas struggled last season, but he’s now a year removed from a serious 2023 knee injury. That makes Douglas, who was outstanding from 2021 to 2023, an intriguing bounce-back candidate. He’s garnered interest around the league this offseason.

Are you worried about Brian Callahan, Titans offense?

2218477763.jpg

The Tennessee Titans had a fairly good practice on Saturday. Starting quarterback Cam Ward was effective. Ward hit Calvin Ridley and Bryce Oliver for big-time gains, amidst other notable completions, per multiple reporters in attendance. Offensive coordinator Nick Holz talked about how the offensive install had been completed. It led to desirable on-field results.

Saturday’s practice ended with some lowlights, however. A sloppy redzone series was thrown off track by consecutive penalties (on Van Jefferson and JC Latham). A Calvin Ridley drop ended practice.

And then Sunday’s nightmare session arrived. The coaching staff purposely put Ward and the offense in disingenuous situations like third-and-long. The defense occasionally showed Cover Zero and dropped into coverage instead of bringing the blitz (they brought pressure too, sometimes).

The offense responded horribly. Ward went five-of-14 in the team periods, making him eight-of-18 on the day, per Jim Wyatt. He was intercepted by Amani Hooker and nearly threw two more interceptions. He was flustered, inaccurate, and frustrated, which is uncharacteristic. The offense as a whole didn’t respond to adversity, which may be concerning.

Brian Callahan made the offense run gassers at the end of practice, something veteran receiver Tyler Lockett admitted he’s never done in his 11-year career. It was shades of the 2024 Titans, the 3-14 iteration that earned the right to draft Ward.

Brian Callahan made the offense run gassers at the end of practice, something veteran receiver Tyler Lockett admitted he’s never done in his 11-year career. It was shades of the 2024 Titans, the 3-14 iteration that earned the right to draft Ward. They’re purposely being hard on Ward and the offense in an attempt to ensure last year’s mistakes don’t repeat themselves.

There’s no telling if the Titans’ unique approach will pay dividends. Those answers will arrive in September-onward. Currently, Dennard Wilson’s defense is throwing the “kitchen sink” at Ward, hoping he’ll pass the tests in November that he’s occasionally failing in August. Privately, the Titans’ staff possesses so much faith in Ward’s personality and make-up that they’re embracing the struggles and frustration. They believe he’ll recover.

And for the record, this is universally true around the league:

Preseason PSA- just about every defense is ahead of every offense at this point in training camp.

— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) August 4, 2025

The Titans will hold a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday. They’ll play the Buccaneers in the preseason opener on Saturday. It’ll be an excellent test versus a Todd Bowles coached defense. It’ll be worth monitoring Ward’s progress this week after a difficult weekend.

Tennessee Titans open to adding free agent pass rusher

2173825088.jpg

The Tennessee Titans‘ thin EDGE group got even thinner right before training camp when Lorenzo Carter informed the team of his plan to retire. They needed to do more earlier this offseason to address the issue, but did not. Can that change now? Jeremy Fowler of ESPN says the Titans are open to adding a pass rusher in free agency. No kidding?

Fowler listed Preston Smith as a name to watch. Smith, a 10-year veteran, will turn 33 in November. He was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Pittsburgh Steelers last November. He totaled 4.5 sacks between the two stops.

Adding Smith would give them some much needed depth in the EDGE room, but probably wouldn’t end up having much of an impact on the field. The pass rush success or failure is really going to come down to two things:

  1. How much pressure can Jeffery Simmons and T’Vondre Sweat create in the middle?
  2. Can second round pick Femi Oladejo make an impact this year?

Addition of Quandre Diggs gives Titans best safety room in NFL

gettyimages-2178151947.jpg

The Tennessee Titans made the surprising decision to bring back veteran safety Quandre Diggs earlier this week. Diggs was already present at Wednesday’s practice, though the Titans plan to ease him back into training camp. His addition arguably gives the defense the strongest safety room in the entire NFL.

Amani Hooker and Xavier Woods are the projected starters. New general manager Mike Borgonzi also selected safety Kevin Winston Jr. in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Winston Jr. has missed a few practices in a row with “knee soreness,” but has been an impact performer at training camp when on the field.

The Titans also have Mike Brown, Kendell Brooks, and Julius Wood at the position. Brown was a quality reserve defender when called upon throughout 2024. Diggs’ addition ensures there’s room for only one (at most) of the aforementioned back-end players on the 53-man roster.

Diggs was concise when speaking reporters at Wednesday’s practice. He had other potential suitors in free agency, but chose to reunite with the Titans for a number of reasons. No. 1 overall quarterback Cam Ward is his actual cousin. Tyler Lockett, who he played four seasons with in Seattle, is his best friend. Titans cornerbacks coach Tony Oden was Diggs’ position coach for three years. Tennessee, where he built bonds last year with Hooker and Jeffery Simmons, felt familiar and comfortable.

Safety Quandre Diggs @qdiggs6 talks about his return to the @Titans, being reunited with cousin @Cameron7Ward and more. pic.twitter.com/udocsYiIiP

— Jim Wyatt (@jwyattsports) August 6, 2025

Diggs is a three-time Pro Bowler. He was legitimately good for the Titans last season before suffering a season-ending Lisfranc injury halfway through the season. He told reporters Wednesday he wouldn’t be “content” with a mentorship role that doesn’t include playing. He’s in Nashville to compete.

Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson must sort through how to divide snaps between Hooker, Woods, Winston Jr. and Diggs when all parties are healthy. It’s a good problem to have, one the Titans need more of at other positions. Diggs’ signing was surprising, but he represents a quality addition to a rebuilding team.

Titans offense bounces back on Wednesday

gettyimages-2226829126.jpg

The Tennessee Titans’ offense was so bad on Sunday that practice ended with Brian Callahan chewing out the entire unit. In reality, the offense has been pretty bad the majority of camp to this point. That isn’t completely unexpected with a rookie quarterback, but people are starting to panic a little bit.

The good news is the offense bounced back today. Cam Ward was still “mid” in the one-on-ones, according to Paul Kuharsky, but he was better in the team period and really good in the two-minute. That goes down as progress in my book, and progress is exactly what we are hoping to see from the rookie quarterback. The next big test for Ward and the offense comes tomorrow when the Titans will take part in joint practices against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On the front, don’t freak out if things don’t go well for Ward and the offense in those practices. It is going to be his first real test against an NFL defense. We don’t want to see him completely fall on his face, but there will probably be some bumps in the road throughout his work against the Buccaneers, who are coached by one of the best defensive minds in the league, Todd Bowles.

I am excited to see what comes out of these practices. Ward strikes me as a gamer – meaning he is going to be better when the stakes are higher.

Rookie WRs standout, Cam Ward’s air support and other Titans bullets

imagn-26144126.jpg

The Tennessee Titans had a pretty good practice day against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday. It wasn’t all great, but there was enough good that should give us some confidence about this offense going forward.

  • Rookie wide receiver Elic Ayomanor put Bucs’ corner Tyrek Funderbunk in a blender:
.@Titans rookie @elicayomanor had some nice reps against the @Buccaneers. pic.twitter.com/9Ie1VTtyYs

— Jim Wyatt (@jwyattsports) August 7, 2025
  • Chimere Dike also caught a touchdown in the short-yardage period. The Titans waited until the fourth round in the 2025 NFL Draft to get any weapons for number one overall pick Cam Ward. That was too long in my opinion, but maybe they will hit on a few of the day three guys including Dike, Ayomanor and tight end Gunnar Helm.
  • Speaking of Helm, he was on the receiving end of what Jim Wyatt called “Ward’s best throw of the day.“ Helm and Chig Okonkwo should be a good duo. There is a lot of upside there. It will be interesting to see how Brian Callahan decides to employ them.
  • Calvin Ridley also had a good day. Ridley needs to be a stud for this offense to be good in 2025. He and Ward already have a better connection than Will Levis and Ridley ever did last year. Even with that being said, Ridley had 1,017 receiving yards last season.
  • Nate Washington said he hates joint practices because there are always fights. Well, there was a fight yesterday, and Cam Ward launched a ball into the skirmish. His response when asked who he was trying to hit was pretty funny:
Cam Ward was asked about chucking a ball at a Bucs defender during a scuffle at practice today.

His response: “I was trying to hit one of those boys in red.”

5 Titans players to watch in preseason Week 1 vs. Buccaneers

imagn-26762054.jpg

The Tennessee Titans held a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday morning. It was an excellent measuring stick for Brian Callahan’s rebuilding team. The Titans will now play the same opponent in Saturday’s Week 1 preseason opener.

We’ve identified five Titans players worth especially watching closely in Saturday’s first exhibition game.

QB Cam Ward

All eyes will obviously be on rookie quarterback Cam Ward. The No. 1 overall pick will play a “series or two,” according to head coach Brian Callahan. It’ll mark Ward’s first taste of official NFL action, and Titans fans will be anxious to see him perform admirably.

Rookie Wide Receivers

We’re cheating by grouping the rookie wide receivers together, but there’s too many to give them their own individual categories. Elic Ayomanor is competing for a starting role at “X” boundary receiver. Chimere Dike should play extensively on Saturday, both on offense and special teams. Ward’s favorite target Xavier Restrepo is fighting to make the 53-man roster.

LT Dan Moore Jr.

The Titans paid Dan Moore Jr. handsomely via a four-year contract worth $82 million in free agency to protect Ward. Many around the league considered it an overpay, but new GM Mike Borgonzi was willing to throw money at a multi-year problem. It would be nice if Moore doesn’t have any hiccups in his series or two on Saturday.

EDGE Femi Oladejo

Everyone is concerned about the Titans’ pass rush. Rookie EDGE Femi Oladejo is expected to play a sizable role alongside Arden Key and Dre’Mont Jones. Oladejo is raw, but explosive and athletic. Hopefully he makes a splash play versus the Buccaneers.

LB James Williams Sr.

Sophomore linebacker James Williams Sr. is the heavy favorite to claim the vacant starting gig opposite Cody Barton. It hasn’t been much of an offseason “competition,” with Williams dominating first-team reps at training camp practice. A stellar showing versus the Buccaneers would help him continue securing what already feels secured.

Is Chig Okonkwo a fantasy football sleeper?

gettyimages-2190651941.jpg

We have been talking about Chig Okonkwo’s upside since the Tennessee Titans selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has shown some flashes of that upside, but has not put together a complete season as an actual weapon to this point. Now, he enters the last year of his rookie contract. Will this be the year that he finally puts it together?

Justin Boone thinks it will be. He highlighted Chig as one of his sleepers at the tight end position in fantasy football. Boone notes that Chig had a strong finish to the 2024 season. This is true. He had 10, 11, and 7 catches, respectively, in weeks 14 through 16. That’s an extremely small sample size, but it was good to see him finally get involved in the offense.

Boone also notes that Okonkwo has a chance to be the number two option in the passing game behind Calvin Ridley. The bulk of the season last year tells us that probably isn’t the case, but maybe he and Brian Callahan figured something out at the end of the season that will carry over to this year.

I am late digging into all of the fantasy football stuff for the upcoming season, but I would not feel comfortable heading into the season with Chig as my TE1 in fantasy outside of a really deep league. What about you?

Cam Ward solid in Titans preseason debut

Cam Ward looked poised in his preseason debut for the Tennessee Titans. After going three and out on the first series, he came back and led an 11-play touchdown drive. That drive included three third down conversions that Ward picked up passing.

There has been a lot of talk about his chemistry with Calvin Ridley in camp. That was on full display tonight. His first completion went for 27 yards to Ridley:

Ward did have a pass that should have been intercepted. It was a rookie mistake where it looked like he locked on the receiver he wanted to throw to before the snap and never saw the defender. That will be a good teaching moment when they watch the film back this week.

It has been a good start to the preseason for Ward. He was good in practice against the Buccaneers this week and good in the game. He will get another test next week when the Titans practice against the Atlanta Falcons.

Titanic Ward to Ridley, James Williams’s night and other Titans bullets

The Tennessee Titans didn’t get the result they wanted last night with the 29-7 loss in the preseason opener to the Tampa Buccaneers, but there were plenty of good things that happened.

  • Jim Wyatt has his six things that stood out. One of the things he highlighted was the connection Cam Ward had with Calvin Ridley. That is going to be a very important connection for this offense to be good. The respect those guys have for each other at this early stage is really cool to see.
  • Wyatt also pointed out the good night that inside linebacker James Williams Sr had. Williams is trying to make his case to start opposite Cody Barton when the season starts.
  • Tyjae Spears suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss last night. More on that here.
  • Paul Kuharsky broke down Cam Ward’s night, including a nugget that he arrived at the stadium 6 1/2 hours before kickoff.
  • So much has been made of Ward’s propensity to be the first one in the building since was drafted. That doesn’t guarantee success as an NFL quarterback, but his work ethic will certainly help him succeed.
  • Old friend Justin Graver had the best tweet of the night:

  • Cam Ward dug the Titans out of a hole after a penalty gave them 1st and 20. Brian Callahan on that and the need to stay away from the penalties, which were a major problem last year:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little hit a 70-yard field goal last night. He will probably be their best player on offense:
