Just days before the NBA trade deadline, there was a flurry of speculation and rumors about Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns.
The Suns were reportedly open to the idea of shipping Durant away, but no deal came together.
Evan Sidery shared a new report from Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski that said that if the Minnesota Timberwolves were able to pull off a trade that involved Durant, he would have approved it for a chance to play with Anthony Edwards.
In the end, the team wasn’t able to put together a good deal in time, but the Timberwolves are now a team to watch in the summer if Durant is ready to leave Phoenix.
If the Timberwolves were able to pull off a trade involving Kevin Durant, they believe he would’ve approved it to play with Anthony Edwards, per @sam_amick/@JonKrawczynski (https://t.co/YQhcLxk5FU).

The Suns have Durant, at least for now.
But because he has heard they were contemplating trading him, he might be ready to leave in the offseason, and the Timberwolves could be ready to jump into action and try to get him.
The combination of Durant and Edwards would be sensational and explosive.
They have a good relationship after their years of competing against one another and then playing for Team USA at the Paris Olympics.
Edwards has repeatedly said that Durant is his idol, someone he has looked up to since he was a child.
Being able to play by his side would be a huge honor and a career-defining moment for him.
Beyond that, Durant’s addition could obviously help the Timberwolves, who are currently the sixth team in the West with a 29-23 record.
The Timberwolves might have to give up a lot for Durant, but it could be worth it to get a two-time champion and future Hall of Famer.

The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic will go down as one of the most shocking in NBA history.
Trading a 25-year-old superstar in the middle of the season just months after making it to the NBA Finals isn’t a decision most teams would’ve made.
Notably, it also made it seem as if they were done with him, especially considering that they didn’t even fetch a more valuable trade package around the league.
That’s why Anthony Edwards admitted that he felt bad for him (via NBA Central).

Talking to the media, the Minnesota Timberwolves star questioned the reasoning behind the trade, stating that it was crazy that they would trade a 25-year-old star after making the NBA Finals.
Reports indicate that the Mavericks became frustrated with Doncic’s larger-than-life demeanor and constant complaints.
They were reportedly particularly concerned about his questionable work ethic, poor conditioning, and eating habits.
The Mavs had reportedly addressed those concerns with the Slovenian superstar multiple times in the past but to no avail.
Now, this might be the wake-up call he needed.
No one can deny Doncic’s talent and impact.
Even if he’s not in the best shape, he can control the tempo of a game like no one else in the league.
Hopefully, this will spark a fire within him, motivating him to be in the best shape of his career from here on out.
The Mavs made a bold move, so bold that it’s making them look like they lost the trade even after getting Anthony Davis and a first-round pick.

Reports have stated that De’Aaron Fox would prefer to leave the Sacramento Kings for the San Antonio Spurs, but he won’t necessarily get his wish.
According to Brett Siegel, both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors are “among the teams showing some level of interest in De’Aaron Fox.”
“Sources said other teams to inquire about Fox’s availability in Sacramento include the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors. A path to possibly landing Fox would be extremely difficult for the Timberwolves and is unlikely since they’d have to move Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels to get out of the second apron. McDaniels does have a lot of fans in the Kings’ front office, sources said,” Siegel said, per NBACentral. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors are among the teams showing some level of interest in De’Aaron Fox, per @BrettSiegelNBA

Although the Timberwolves are interested in Fox, Siegel made it clear that they’d have a tough time getting him.
They would have to move the contracts of both Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels so they’d sit under the second apron and, according to Siegel, McDaniels is well-loved by the Kings’ front office.
Perhaps they could get another team involved in the trade if they are so hesitant about McDaniels?
The Raptors are another team that could create a deal for the Kings, but Sacramento will likely want a lot in exchange for their star player.
Whoever finally makes a trade happen will have to put a lot on the table or else the Kings will likely reject them.
It sounds like the Spurs are still the frontrunners to acquire Fox, but that could change quickly depending on how aggressive other front offices are.
The pursuit of Fox will only heat up over the next few days.

The approximate midway point of the NBA season is here, and things haven’t exactly turned out the way a number of teams thought they would by this point.
A couple of teams that went very far in last season’s playoffs are struggling right now, and one of those teams is the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have a 23-21 record.
They made the Western Conference Finals last spring, but late in the offseason, they made a stunning move by sending star big man Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo.
On ESPN’s “NBA Countdown,” Kendrick Perkins called them “the most disappointing team” and even said the aforementioned trade is on the verge of being, in his mind, the worst in league history.
“Minnesota Timberwolves. They’re the most disappointing team … they’re on the verge of making the worst trade in NBA history.”@KendrickPerkins weighs in on the Karl-Anthony towns tradepic.twitter.com/QsMayDu1a8![]()
— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) January 23, 2025
At the time of the trade, some felt Minnesota had made a deft move that would lead to better roster cohesion, but all that has happened is that they have taken a big step back, while the Knicks have become legitimate championship contenders.
Randle, who was an All-Star the previous two seasons, has seen his offensive production drop, and the team’s defense has also declined.
Last season, they were first in defensive rating, but so far this season, they have slipped to seventh in that category.
The Timberwolves have plenty of serviceable role players, but other than Anthony Edwards, they simply lack the type of star power that is needed to be a title contender.

There is no doubt that Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves is one of the most exhilarating young stars in the NBA right now.
But that doesn’t mean his game is perfect.
In fact, Edwards is really lacking in one major way.
According to Michael C. Wright, per Legion Hoops, Edwards is now 0-12 on go-ahead or game-tying field goal attempts in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime.
Only LeBron James (0-for-19) has had more attempts without a make since Edwards was drafted.
Anthony Edwards is now 0-12 on go-ahead/game-tying FGAs in final 5 seconds of 4th or OT, per @mikecwright.

This is definitely not something fans want to see from their team’s biggest star.
This fact proves that when the team needs Edwards to step up and be a clutch star, he can’t do it.
That doesn’t mean the Timberwolves are doomed because other players can score go-ahead or game-tying points, but this is definitely something that Edwards should work on.
For the season, he is averaging 26.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game on 44.3 percent shooting from the field and 42.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line.
The Timberwolves are attempting to look like the team they were last season.
They pushed far into the postseason and it felt like they’d be one of the most dominant teams in the West this year.
Instead, they are ninth in the conference with a 22-21 record.
They want to be more than a play-in team and hope to improve before the postseason arrives.
Edwards is still a crucial part of the team and has had multiple great moments in the 2024-25 season, but his capabilities during clutch time need to be improved.

The Minnesota Timberwolves made it to the Western Conference Finals last season.
They’re now hanging by a thread and trying to stay above .500.
This turnaround has been as drastic as it’s been predictable, as trading away their second-best player wasn’t popular among the fans.
Notably, this has also taken a big toll on Anthony Edwards, who has repeatedly been overly critical of his team.
That happened again after their one-point loss to the Golden State Warriors.
As quoted by Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, Edwards ripped his team’s starting five, himself included, calling them out for their lack of energy (via Legion Hoops):
“The starting 5, we are terrible… I would say the starting group gotta come out with more energy like we want to play the game of basketball,” he said.Anthony Edwards:

The young star has been quite frustrated this season.
He has called the team ‘soft’ and has berated them about their lack of communication, especially on defense.
Notably, he hasn’t shied away from criticism, as he knows he also has to be held accountable as their franchise player.
Julius Randle is a decent player, but he’s not as good as Karl-Anthony Towns.
Even if he were, the team played like a well-oiled machine with Towns last season, and it will take a while before they find that same kind of chemistry with Randle – if ever.
The Timberwolves also need to address their point guard position.
Mike Conley isn’t getting any younger and has lost a step, and Rob Dillingham might need more time before being ready.
This team can still turn things around, but everybody involved will need a better effort.

Anthony Edward started the workweek off with a bang on Monday night, scoring a vigorous 41 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in a big win over the Washington Wizards.
Following the game, Edwards opened up about how he felt playing in Washington, DC.
According to Edwards, it was just like he was at home.
Edwards stated:
“It felt like I was in Minnesota. It was crazy. My first two points were a dunk. It felt like I was at crib. That made the game a lot easier for sure.”Anthony Edwards on playing in Washington:

Edwards’ comfort level led to one of his best games of the season and a much-needed win over the Wizards.
It came just days after the Memphis Grizzlies snuck past the Timberwolves and held Edwards to just 15 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
On Monday night, he was once again looking like an All-Star and one of the most talked-about players in the league.
Edwards and his team have received some mixed reviews so far this season.
They aren’t doing as well as they were last year, and there is concern they don’t have what it takes to create another strong playoff run in the months ahead.
As for Edwards, he is still performing well (25.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game), but he has changed his emphasis and is focusing a lot more on shooting from beyond the three-point line.
This has affected other parts of his game, and some Timberwolves fans aren’t very happy about that.
But all that matters is winning, and they did that easily on Monday evening.
Edwards always does better when he is feeling confident.
Therefore, he should try to make all road games feel like ones being played at home.

Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves is in hot water with the NBA once again.
On Monday morning, the league announced that Edwards had been fined $50,000 for making an obscene gesture in the direction of a ref during the team’s 127-125 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.
This isn’t the first time Edwards has been slapped with the fine by the league, and it probably won’t be the last.

Edwards scored 15 points, five rebounds, and six assists during his team’s loss to the Grizzlies, and the Timberwolves remain the eighth team in the West with a 20-18 record.
It’s been a troubled season for Minnesota, and it’s understandable why Edwards has been frustrated.
He is posting an average of 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists on 43.9 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from the three-point line.
Most of his numbers have dipped a bit, but it’s mostly because Edwards has been more focused on shooting from beyond the arc.
This change in his game has improved his three-point percentage, but it has also made his other stats drop.
Edwards has always been a vocal player and has been fined before for criticism of game officials and using inappropriate language.
He has already had to pay $75,000, $100,000, and $25,000 for using profane language in 2024–25.
It seems fairly obvious that Edwards isn’t focused on biting his tongue and he will let his opinions be known.
Thankfully, his immense salary will always be able to cover these fines.
Will Edwards and the Timberwolves climb higher in the standings?
If not, on-court outbursts and gestures might continue, and more fines could be coming.

Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder is one of the most dominant and talented big men in the league right now.
So, whenever anyone can get past him, it is noteworthy.
On Thursday night, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves dunked on Holmgren in a way that goes way beyond “noteworthy.”
The video of the dunk was shared by Bleacher Report and others online and instantly went viral.
It was just one of the many great moments from Minnesota’s win over the Thunder.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Edwards has posterized someone, but it’s rare to see Holmgren humbled in such a way.
For the evening, Edwards produced 23 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists and helped his Timberwolves walk away with a 116-101 win.
Edwards currently has a season average of 27.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists on 44.0 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from the three-point line.
It’s not often that teams beat the Thunder, which gave the Timberwolves even more reason to celebrate.
Minnesota needed this win on Thursday because they had just lost two consecutive games to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks.
Earning a strong victory against such a dominant Western Conference foe gives the Timberwolves some wind in their sails before the All-Star break.
They are now the seventh seed in the West with a 31-25 record.
Even with this embarrassing dunk and the painful loss, the Thunder are still easily the best team in their conference with a 44-10 record.
Holmgren might not have liked getting dunked on like this, but he is still very happy with how well his team is playing.

Since he made it to the NBA, Karl-Anthony Towns has been criticized for his bad defense.
He’s never been physically strong enough to compete with other big men and has sometimes appeared unable or uninterested in helping.
Nevertheless, his offensive versatility and skill have always made him a valuable player, and the Minnesota Timberwolves have clearly missed him this season.
Without him, Anthony Edwards has had to rely on the three-point shot way more often, and while he’s made big strides in that regard, that’s never been his game.
He’s less dangerous when he pulls up from a distance rather than driving and keeping everybody involved.
However, their defensive regression may be the biggest issue with this team.
At least, that’s how former NBA player Greg Anthony feels.
"They've lost their defensive identity"@GregAnthony50 on the Timberwolves after they fall to .500
pic.twitter.com/mkoI0udjbj![]()
— NBA TV (@NBATV) January 5, 2025
After losing to the Detroit Pistons, Anthony argued that the Timberwolves had lost their defensive identity.
Chris Finch’s team has the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Rudy Gobert.
Once again, however, he’s proven to be unplayable during stretches.
Gobert has been pushed around and moved into the restricted area, and the team’s overall defensive effort has been lacking.
Looking back, perhaps trading their second-best player months after making the Western Conference Finals wasn’t the wisest idea.
Not so long ago, they looked like a team on the rise, poised to be a championship contender for years to come.
Now, they’re struggling to hang around .500, and it doesn’t feel like a coincidence.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have one of the most electrifying players in the league.
It’s only the second time in franchise history that they can brag about it, with Kevin Garnett being the first one.
However, as big a star as Anthony Edwards is, he still doesn’t consider himself to be the face of the league.
When asked about that, he told Dave McMenamin of ESPN that the league has Victor Wembanyama for that.
“Not really… That’s what they’ve got Wemby for,” he said.
Anthony Edwards on if he considers himself the face of the NBA:

Of course, the San Antonio Spurs superstar is also an enticing player, and he’s going to draw a lot of eyeballs for years to come, but Edwards is also a part of this new generation of box-office talent.
Perhaps he doesn’t want to deal with everything that comes with being the face of the league, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Edwards is unapologetic.
He tells it like it is, doesn’t mince his words about anything, and you can tell that he doesn’t care too much about giving P.R.-trained answers.
That’s something you can afford to do when you’re a wealthy star and are already set for life like he is, but that might not be in the league’s best interests.
They want someone who will uplift their product on the court and off of it, and Edwards doesn’t necessarily seem to be too interested in carrying himself that way.
Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: The league is in great hands, and the NBA has plenty of talent to get by when the old guard rides into the sunset.

The Minnesota Timberwolves walked away with a stinging defeat on Friday night, losing 121-115 to the Houston Rockets.
It was a tough night for the team and its lead star, Anthony Edwards, even though he put up 37 points.
There was a particularly intense moment in the middle of the game when Edwards got into a verbal spat with a fan.
A video shared by Courtside Buzz on X featured Edwards yelling at the fan and needing to be held back by coaches before things escalated.

— Courtside Buzz (@CourtsideBuzzX) February 22, 2025
It’s not obvious what Edwards and the fan were fighting about, but it looks very confrontational and like the situation could have gotten much worse in no time at all.
A fight between Edwards and a fan would have turned the night from bad to worse.
Edwards has never been one to hold back his feelings about himself, his teammates, or his opponents.
So it’s not surprising to see him bring that same sort of energy to a fan.
If things had come to blows, Edwards would have faced a fine and suspension as well.
But Edwards is used to fines and has received several throughout his career, including this year for speaking his mind following games.
Thankfully for everyone involved, this moment didn’t spiral out of control.
It would have been a bad look for Edwards, and it would have hurt his team when they need him most.
They are attempting to climb higher than seventh place in the standings, which means they need everyone playing to the best of their abilities.
Now is not the time for Edwards or anyone in Minnesota to miss games because of an emotional mistake.
