One year after bringing Tim Tebow to Broadway, creating a nationwide fascination that slowly evolved into controversy, the New York Jets on Monday made the long-anticipated move of releasing one of the NFL's most popular players.

The Jets confirmed the release in a three-paragraph news release, a long way from his Super Bowl-sized news conference last March.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," coach Rex Ryan said. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."

Tebow hasn't yet commented about his release but he did post a message on Twitter on Monday afternoon, quoting a Bible verse.

"Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding...in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight," he tweeted.

Wow. Thoughts? :P

I can't help but see this as a positive thing for Tebow... who would actually want to play on such a dysfunctional team? :P

I kind of expected this. I think it could be a few seasons still until Tebow finds a possibly permanent team that wants to stick with him.

Yeah this is a good thing for Tebow. He now may actually be playing for a team that will actually put him in the game. He deserves to get more playing time.

this was bound to happen from day one: two starting QBs on one team=disaster in the making. Tebow being low guy was going to come up short, sad thing is I think he is the better one of the two starters the Jets had.

Jets have announced all 5 QB's they have will be competing for the starting job. :P

Tim Tebow was a distraction to Mark Sanchez when they were together. Now Geno Smith will basically be the same distraction, except Geno Smith is a spoiled brat, based on what I have heard about him. :P

Geno Smith and Sanchez will most likely be 1 and 2, but Sanchez being 1 probably.

Yeah, David Garrard is probably only supposed to be some kind of mentor. Then there's Greg McElroy. He was a seventh round pick, so they don't have a lot invested in him.

He is a good athlete and I was shocked to see him being released. I just wonder what he plans on doing now to be honest.

You can't have two alphas at QB on the same team, somebody had to go.

This might be the end of his career in the NFL. There doesn't seem to be any market for a QB who can't throw the ball accurately. Some people have mentioned the CFL as a possibility but I don't see them being interested either as you're required to pass more often in that league.

The Jets will keep Sanchez for this coming season just because of his contract. It would be too much dead money if they were to release him.

I see the CFL as his only option to start in the league otherwise he will be a second or third string QB.
