News Texans Team Notes

How old is NRG Stadium compared to other NFL venues entering 2025?

While the Houston Texans exploring the possibility of a new stadium might seem like an ill-advised move, it’s honestly right on cue compared to other locations around the NFL.

After opening in 2002, NRG Stadium has mostly remained untouched over the past two decades. Sure, a rebranding happened from Reliant to NRG, but a majority of the internal moves made have been minor at best.

Since the Texans became the league’s “newest” franchise under the McNair family, 12 other teams have moved into new stadiums. Ten new stadiums have been built over the last 22 years, including three locations from San Diego, St. Louis and Oakland to the Los Angeles and Las Vegas, respecitvley.

The Chargers and Rams call SoFi Stadium home out west while the Giants and Jets share MetLife Stadium outside of the New York City limits in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Houston’s lease with NRG Stadium expires in 2032. At that point, there will only be five stadiums older than NRG since the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to move before the 2027 season begins.

The Texans might end up renewing the lease for another decade, but the only way conversations will start there is if the team can massively renovate the complex. A projected price would be anywhere between $500 million to $1 billion and likely would take a full year of renovations, if not longer.

To see where NRG Stadium stacks up in the league, here’s a look at the age of each NFL stadium and the last time each venue saw an significant overhaul of upgrades.

CBS gives Texans a 'B' for 2024 season

After being considered the AFC’s next “it” team for 2024, the Houston Texans finished with the same record during a year where no one expected much.

Yes, finishing 10-7 is an accomplishment, especially when dealing with constant injuries, but the Texans had higher hopes. They planned on hosting multiple playoff games and while securing MVP consideration from C.J. Stroud.

Instead, the same that occurred in 2023 happened once more in 2024. Now, Houston is back with the No. 25 pick and a bit more hope that 2025 is “the year” down off NRG Drive.

While the team’s efforts didn’t end in a Lombardi Trophy, CBS’ Bryan DeArdo still gave Houston a B grade for its 2024 campaign because of their slew of injuries, but revamped running back headlined by Pro Bowler Joe Mixon.

“The Texans were worse on offense and defense this season but still found a way to win a second straight division title and a wild-card playoff game,” Bryan DeArdo wrote. “While their season was plagued by inconsistency, the Texans showed their potential during their 32-12 thumping of the Chargers in the divisional round.”

Injuries derailed Houston’s quest of securing a higher seed, mostly in the receiver room. Nico Collons was on pace to lead the NFL in receiving yards before a hamstring injury forced him to miss five games in the heart of the schedule.

All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs, who many thought would be the missing link to Houston’s success, suffered a torn ACL in Week 8’s win over the Colts, thus forcing him to miss over half the season.

Tank Dell’s breakout season came to a close in early December after suffering a significant knee injury against the Chiefs. His status for the 2025 season is now in jeopardy.

Despite a postseason berth, the Texans could look different in 2025. Houston is expected to add three new linemen ahead of OTAs and should have a few new receivers. Diggs, who won’t be cleared to return to drills until after training camp begins, is expected to test the free-agent market.

But the core of the team, headlined by All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., defensive end Will Anderson Jr., Stroud Collins and Mixon, should still be intact with a lot of young returner players left.

And if new offensive coordinator Nick Caley can help Stroud regain his rookie form, there is always a chance for the Texans to make another push in the AFC.

Could former Texans DL Sheldon Rankins return to Houston in 2025?

Sheldon Rankins was an ideal fit for the Houston Texans’ defense in 2023 as an anchor up the middle.

Could a reunion be in the works in 2025?

Rankins was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday after one season. The former first-round pick inked a two-year deal worth $24.5 million last offseason but was limited to just seven games due to injury.

With his release, the Bengals will gain back 9.6 million in salary cap savings while only taking a hit of $2 million against the cap in dead money.

Former #Texans DT Sheldon Rankins has been released by the #Bengals.

Rankins signed a one-year deal with Houston in 2023, where he posted six sacks and a career high 29 solo tackles. He signed a 2-year, $24.5 million contract with Cincinnati last offseason. https://t.co/QwWSjgVkWR

— Sam Warren (@samwarren_3) February 21, 2025

A former first-round pick out of Louisville, Rankins was at his best in the DeMeco Ryans’ style defense. He found his stride during the 2022 season as a member of the New York Jets under Robert Saleh but truly came into Pro Bowl-caliber form a year later.

During his lone season with the Texans, Rankins racked up six sacks and nine tackles for loss. He also finished with a position-high 37 tackles and 10 QB hits.

Houston’s need for a long-term defensive tackle could lead to a potential reunion this offseason. Rankins seemed to have left on good terms with the AFC South franchise and reportedly had been in talks about a new contract before eventually signing with the AFC North franchise.

The Texans currently must decide if they plan on re-signing Mario Edwards Jr. and Foley Fatukasi after promising seasons in the defensive line last offseason. Both could be looking for multi-year deals while Houston could be more interested in a one-year contract for a starter, as evidenced by previous deals under general manager Nick Caserio.

Given the Texans’ cap situation, a one-year deal could be in play for Rankins to return as a rotational option. Adding him would also allow Houston to move defensive tackle down the pecking order entering the draft, thus making offensive line and receiver a priority.

Potential Texans FA target retires after Hall of Fame career with Cowboys

Zack Martin was expected to be a name the Houston Texans could monitor in free agency this offseason.

Instead, the All-Pro offensive lineman is hanging up the cleats in Arlington for good.

Martin, one of the most decorated linemen in league history, will retire after 11 NFL seasons as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The 34-year-old let owner and general manager Jerry Jones know of his decision on Thursday afternoon.

A 2014 first-round pick out of Notre Dame, Martin was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection during his time with the other Texas franchise. He was a first-team All-Pro pick seven times, which is tied with Hall of Famers Randall McDaniel and John Hannah for the most among guards in NFL history.

According to ESPN, the only player with more first-team All-Pro selections since Martin’s rookie season is former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald with eight. Both are expected to be Hall of Fame candidates when up for eligibility in five seasons.

— Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) February 21, 2025

Part of the reason Houston was expected to have interest in Martin was due to his durability. In 11 seasons, he started 162 games, missing more than one game in a season just twice: 2020 and 2024.

In addition, Martin was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team as part of the 2010 roster. Last season he was limited to 10 games because of an ankle injury that later required surgery.

While Martin is off the table, the Texans still must target at least one new offensive lineman in free agency. Other names who could be in play include Kansas City’s Trey Smith, Chicago’s Teven Jenkins, Pittsburgh’s James Daniels and Atlanta’s Drew Dalman.

ESPN predicts NFL cuts, 5 players who make sense for Texans

As NFL free agency looms, the current names on the market aren’t the only ones would could be looking for new homes in 2025.

With an unexpected $7 million in cap space available for each team, several roster potential cuts could be made to free up more space to target higher-priced players ahead of the 2025 season. While some players could avoid the dreaded pink slip, others could have their agents reach out to teams with a chance to facilitate a trade, thus letting them keep their salaries.

If that fails, they’ll be on the open market, looking to prove they are still worth the value of a lucrative contract.

ESPN recently dove into each team’s biggest question mark when it comes to the salary cap. Several names who could be cut loose might be in play for the Houston Texans, who are expected to free up at least another $20 million in cap space before the NFL draft rolls around.

Here’s six players the AF South champions should target if they’re released ahead of next month’s free agency period.

Jaguars WR Christian Kirk

Kirk should be a reasonably priced option coming off a season-ending injury and would be a plug-and-play option in the slot for the departed Stefon Diggs. With a new Jacksonville regime and Brian Thomas taking the reigns as WR1, his time in Duval County seems about up.

49ers WR Deebo Samuel

Samuel will be on a new team next season, but the question is will it happen via a trade or signing? Houston shouldn’t give up any draft capital for the former All-Pro, but if he hits free agency, a one-year rental as Tank Dell’s replacement seems like a win-win for both sides.

Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett

Lockett has been demoted to WR3 in Seattle, but he’d be WR2 for Houston if the AFC South franchise brought him in. He’d thrive in the slot for C.J. Stroud after averaging 84 catches over his first nine years with the Seahawks.

Rams WR Cooper Kupp

Kupp has been a 1,000-yard playmaker nearly every season in both the slot and on the outside. He already has mastered the Sean McVay offense, so why not join forces with new Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley?

Seahawks Edge Dre’Mont Jones

Jones hasn’t been worth the top-tier money Seattle’s planning on paying him, but he could be a nice replacement for Derek Barnett should the No. 3 defensive end cash during free agency.

Texans land future No. 2 WR in latest mock draft

What the Houston Texans do in the 2025 NFL draft hinges on several questions.

The first comes from the moves made in free agency. Over the next several weeks, Houston hopes to secure an offensive lineman or quality No. 3 receiver. If they secure one, the Texans could pivot toward shoring up the other spot when on the clock at No. 25.

Entering next week’s NFL combine, the Texans seem locked in either drafting a wide receiver or an interior offensive lineman. Should they go the pass-catcher route, look for Texas’ Matthew Golden or Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka to be at the center of talks on Thursday night in Green Bay.

The 33rd Team’s Kyle Crabbs believes Houston won’t have the option of selecting Golden, so it lands Egbuka to create a reunion with former Buckeyes star C.J. Stroud. As a primary slot receiver, Ebguka would serve as the new long-term replacement for All-Pro Stefon Diggs, regardless of whether the Texans bring him back on a one-year deal.

“Egbuka should be considered an underneath, chain-moving option at the NFL level who can provide value in 11p-heavy offenses,” Crabbs wrote. “The Shanahan scheme and all of its branches across the league will likely find ample value in Egbuka’s game on targets that attack the middle of the field.”

During Stroud’s final season in Columbus, Egbuka was the No. 2 weapon behind future first-round pick Marvin Harrison Jr. The duo connected for 74 catches and a career-best 1,151 to match his 10 touchdown receptions en route to a College Football Playoff appearance.

After being limited to 10 games in 2023, Egbuka elected to return for his senior season. The decision proved wise as he notched a second 1,000-yard campaign, serving once more as the No. 2 weapon behind Jeremiah Smith en route to a national championship.

Texans Wire’s John Crumpler recently broke down how Egbuka is a sure-fire pick for the Texans under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. A willing blocker, the 6-foot target might be limited inside, but he’s essentially the type of target Houston needs for Caley’s offense to elevate in 2025 beyond an average unit.

Knowing the Texans, however, a trade-back shouldn’t be off the table. Houston only has six picks and could be in the market to move back with a chance to grab more draft capital while landing two players for the price of one in Round 1.

Who is a dream draft pick for the Texans this offseason?

Finding a promising starter at the wide receiver position early in the draft in a year where the salary cap isn’t kind is simply smart business for the Houston Texans under general manager Nick Caserio.

Houston is all about saving money while adding premier talent in free agency.

That’s what Pro Football Focus has named the Texans’ doing in their latest article entering next week’s NFL Combine. When poised with the question of who is Houston’s “dream draft pick,” PFF made sure to consider addressing the offensive line first by adding Arizona Cardinals Will Hernandez in free agency.

In the draft, the Texans make the obvious pick for C.J. Stroud by landing Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka at pick No. 25.

“Stefon Diggs‘ likely departure and Tank Dell‘s devastating injury create a need in Houston’s receiving corps,” PFF wrote. “If Egbuka were to make it to Pick No. 25, the Texans should pull the trigger, adding a slot threat with elite body/speed control and a high football IQ, having earned a 79.5 PFF receiving grade this past season.”

.During Stroud’s final season in Columbus, Egbuka was the No. 2 weapon behind future first-round pick Marvin Harrison Jr. The duo connected for 74 catches and a career-best 1,151 to match his 10 touchdown receptions en route to a College Football Playoff appearance.

2025 Texans offseason roster profile: WR Stefon Diggs

The Houston Texans are officially in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Over the next few weeks, Texans Wire will break down each player on the roster who saw action in the 2024 season and their potential moving forward.

We will recap their 2024 season, their contract status, and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.

Let’s continue to break down the wide receiver room by talking about perhaps the most polarizing offseason name in Stefon Diggs.

2024 Stefon Diggs Season

When brought in from Buffalo, some envisioned Diggs to take over as the new No. 1, especially given that he had four years left on his current $104 million extension signed with the Bills earlier in his tenure. All that changed when Houston voided the final three years of his contract in exchange for a one-year, $22 million restructured contract.

As the Texans’ No. 2, Diggs remained a steady chain-mover on offense while helping Houston start the season 4-1. When Nico Collins suffered a hamstring injury that landed him on the injured reserve, the four-time Pro Bolwer became a fixture as the new leading man for C.J. Stroud’s passing attack.

Over the next two games, Diggs averaged six catches for 72 yards and found the end zone once. He was well on his way to another 100-catch season, but a non-contact knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts led to an unsettling ending.

Diggs’ torn ACL limited him to just eight games. He would undergo surgery and recently has begun workouts with a brace on. The two-time All-Pro is expected to play in 2025, though his exact return date remains a mystery.

2024 Stefon Diggs stats

Despite being limited to eight games, Diggs managed to put together a quality season. He caught 47 passes for 496 yards and scored four total touchdowns, including an 11-yard touchdown run in Week 4’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

2025 contract status

With the current restructure, Diggs is an unrestricted free agent. Houston can sign him to a new deal ahead of the legal tampering period since he’s an internal free agent, though other teams could float around the idea of offering him a long-term deal for more money.

Diggs’ health will play a role in the Texans’ contract negotiations.

Outlook for 2025

Initially, Houston was expected to be a one-year home for the two-time All-Pro. Of course, that was before the torn ACL and Tank Dell’s season-ending knee injury. Both sides could want a reunion, especially given Houston’s need for a stable No. 2 target in the passing game.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio also isn’t ruling out a reunion on a new contract. During his Wednesday appearance with SportsRadio 610’s “Payne & Pendergast,” Caserio said he’d be “absolutely open” to bringing back Diggs before the new calendar year begins.

“We have good relationships with Stef and his representation,” Caserio said. “We enjoyed having Stef in the building. So, the door is always open. A number of players have expressed sentiments and interest in potentially returning to our team next season. We never rule anything out, so we’re going to be open-minded.”

Should the Texans move off Diggs, expect at least two new receivers to be a part of the roster by the start of summer workouts.

10 biggest salary cap hits for Texans in 2025 ahead of free agency

The Houston Texans enter free agency with little money and many problems. It’s definitely not the ideal plan to have going into what feels like a must-overachieve season.

Houston could shore up more cap space by trimming the fat with roster cuts. So far, offensive lineman Shaq Mason and defensive tackle Denico Autry have been rumored to be on the bubble. Tight end Dalton Schultz, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and offensive tackle Tytus Howard might have underacheived last season, but their dead cap hit and limited return would only hurt the Texans rather than help this upcoming season.

Where things will stand at the NFL Combine, the Texans are expected to have roughly $5.7 million in cap space for 2025, which is currently among the bottom 10 in the league. That gives general manager Nick Caserio little to work with as he looks to build the roster up in free agency.

Here’s a look at the 10 biggest cap hits currently on the books for the Texans in 2025 ahead of any roster cuts.

Texans HC DeMeco Ryans breaks down team's top offseason priority

The Houston Texans allowed 54 sacks in 2024 despite having the highest payroll of offensive linemen.

Both the payroll and the starting five are expected to change to keep quarterback C.J. Stroud upright next year in what could be the most important season in franchise history.

“Getting better protection for C.J. is definitely a main point of emphasis for us,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday at the NFL Combine. “We know when C.J. is protected (and) he has a clean pocket, he’s a pretty good quarterback.”

Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil isn’t losing his job after giving up one sack in 2024. Tytus Howard’s contract likely keeps him in the building for another year, though his position might switch in favor of rookie Blake Fisher.
The three other positions are up for grabs, though new offensive coordinator Nick Caley will have a say on how to fix the offensive line. Everyone seems to be on the same page after the Texans gave up eight sacks in the divisional round loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium, which ultimately led to the firing of Chris Strausser and promotion of Cole Popovich.
“We can gain improvement,” Ryans said. “And that is ultimately why it came down to the decision to make the move because I feel like we can improve and can get better.”
The Texans have been linked to several linemen in the draft and will have an up-close and personal look to see what their potential is for a selection, but Houston isn’t limiting itself to just a rookie joining the club. Houston could target several names in free agency, though top-end options like Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith, Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dallman and Indianapolis Colts guard Will Fries could be out of range.
Pittsburgh Steelers guard James Daniels or Chicago Bears offensive lineman Teven Jenkins could make sense on a one-year deal, though it has to be the right price.
There is a certain criteria Ryans is looking for in terms of player, regardless of draft or free agency. To play in Houston, Ryans is looking for someone who can serve as a stable option in pass protection.
“I’m looking at pass protection, how good is a guy in pass protection,” Ryans said. “For me, speaking offensive linemen, I want to see that grit. I want to see that toughness, that nastiness of how guys are finishing their blocks, what type of leaders these guys are, how passionate they are about football.”

Texans releasing OG Shaq Mason, saves $2 million in cap space

Houston Texans v Indianapolis Colts

The Texans are releasing the 32-year old Shaq Mason as they will now rely on a stable of young offensive linemen along the interior.

And the transactions just keep on coming for the Houston Texans.

Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Texans are releasing veteran offensive guard Shaq Mason after two seasons with the team. The move saves Houston roughly $2 million in cap space as Mason was set to earn a base salary of $10 million in 2025. However, the Texans will take on $12.482 million in dead cap money.

With the 32-year old out the door, the Texans will look to Tytus Howard and Kenyon Greene as their potential starters at both guard spots. With Jarrett Patterson the incumbent at center, third-year man Juice Scruggs could also be in the competition for a guard spot after seeing time at all three interior positions during the 2024 season.

This is the third roster decision made this morning, joining the restructuring of linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair’s contract and the signing of defensive tackle Kurt Hinish to a new one-year deal.

Azeez Al-Shaair was due $9 million in base salary in 2025.

The Texans continue to make moves to clear cap space as the clock ticks down on the 2024 league year.

On Friday morning, the Texans restructured the contract of linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair which has freed up $6.26 million in salary cap space, per NFL inside Aaron Wilson. Prior to the restructure, Al-Shaair was going to be due $9 million in 2025 base salary.

In his first season with the Texans, Al-Shaair started all 11 regular season games he played in, missing the other six games due to a suspension stemming from a late hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He ended the year with 70 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. He added 12 more tackles during the team’s two playoff games against the Chargers and Chiefs.

Prior to joining the Texans, Al-Shaair played one season for the Seahawks (2023) after spending his first four years in the NFL with the 49ers.

DT Kurt Hinish has four starts over his first three seasons with the Texans.

On Thursday afternoon, NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported that the Texans are signing defensive tackle Kurt Hinish to a one-year deal worth up to $2.35 million. The base salary of the deal is $1.8 million.

At 25 years old, Hinish was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after next week’s start to the new league year. Per Wilson, the Texans chose to execute deal over tendering him as a right of first refusal or other level.

Hinish joined the Texans after going undrafted in 2022 out of Notre Dame. He’s played in 42 total games over the past three seasons with four career starts, three of which came during his rookie season. He has career totals of 57 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a single pass breakup.

Texans trading LT Laremy Tunsil to Commanders for draft pick haul

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

The Texans are moving on from 5-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil who heads to the nation’s capital to play for the Commanders.

The Texans might have just made the biggest trade of the offseason thus far and — more than likely — you’re probably not going to be a fan of the move.

Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Texans are sending five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a haul of draft picks. Per Rapoport, the Commanders are sending the Texans a 2025 third-round pick, 2025 seventh-round pick, 2026 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

In exchange, the Commanders are receiving Tunsil and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

Despite the Texans’ recent success over the past two seasons, it looks like the front office is choosing to do a small retool by trading away one of their most important players while he’s still young enough to fetch this level of capital. By the beginning of the 2025 season, Tunsil will have just turn 31 years old.

Now, the Texans will likely look towards this year’s draft to find a new starter at left tackle, or right tackle, should they choose to give last year’s starter on the right side, Blake Fisher, a shot at helming the blindside. Otherwise, the remaining backups at tackle for the Texans are Zach Thomas, and Austin Deculus, both of which would not be ideal to have starting heading into next season.

Follow every update throughout the first day of Free Agency

Today is the first day of NFL’s free agency period and the Houston Texans are looking to add to their roster. Battle Red Blog is tracking all the big updates and rumors throughout the opening bell of free agency.

TEXANS SIGN SUPER BOWL CHAMP JUSTIN WATSON

Another addition to the wide receiver room. WR Justin Watson leaves the Kansas City Chiefs and joins the Houston Texans Another death knell for fans wanting the Texans to resign Stefon Diggs.

Watson played four seasons for the Bucs before three productive and winning years with the Chiefs. He is known for his blocking and big plays in key moments for the Chiefs. His addition will provide depth to the room in the wake of Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs’ injuries.

TEXANS TRADE LAREMY TUNSIL

In the biggest move of the free agency opening, the Houston Texans have TRADED away Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders. Houston receives a second, third, and fourth round pick.

The trade: The Texans are giving up Tunsil and a 2025 fourth-round pick in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick, 2025 seventh-round pick, 2026 second-round pick and 2026 fourth-round pick.

I repeat - Laremy Tunsil is no longer a Houston Texan.

ERIC MURRAY JETTISONS FOR THE JAGS

The Houston Texans lose their first marquee free agent in safety Eric Murray.

The deal is for three years and $22.5M. This is a fantastic contract for Eric Murray who started 14 games with the Texans last season.

The 31-year old safety was a mainstay on the defense and a critical piece to the Texans secondary. He now will be playing for division rival Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags have added Jourdan Lewis earlier today to revamp their secondary.

This deal could potentially end up as draft compensation for the Houston Texans.

TEXANS SIGN DB TREMON SMITH

Nick Caserio is cooking this morning. He signs another player with Houston Texans experience in DB Tremon Smith. This deal is for two years and $7.5M according to Aaron Wilson.

#Texans deal for Tremon Smith reunites him with special teams coordinator Frank Ross, guarantees up to $4.5 million on a two-year deal with max value of $7.5 million, per source.
He is represented by Matt Glose of Generation Sports Group @KPRC2

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 10, 2025

Smith is a key special teamer and would be one of, if not the highest paid special teams player. Houston has leaned on their special teams throughout the Nick Caserio era and this continues the trend.

DEREK BARNETT RESIGNS

Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle and Ian Rapoport announced an agreement with DE Derek Barnett to a one-year, $5M contract to stay with the Texans.

Derek Barnett is going back to the Texans on a 1 year deal for $5M, source says.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 10, 2025

Barnett was a fantastic rotational addition to the team last year on the defensive line to give them edge depth. His five sacks last season was his most since 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

TEXANS ADD WR BRAXTON BERRIOS

The Houston Texans are off and running this morning. They have added veteran WR Braxton Berrios to a one year deal according to Adam Schefter.

Former Dolphins WR Braxton Berrios reached agreement on a one-year, $2 million deal with the Texans, per source. The deal was negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 10, 2025

Berrios is entering his seventh season and only played six games in 2024 for the Miami Dolphins. Berrios is a slot receiver and should be a short-term fix until either Stefon Diggs or Tank Dell possibly return in 2025.

SHELDON RANKINS COMES HOME

Defensive Tackle Sheldon Rankins signs a one year, $7M deal to come back to the Houston Texans. He signed a two year deal with Cincinnati in 2023 before the Bengals cut him loose after one season.

The Texans have agreed to terms with DT Sheldon Rankins on a one-year deal, worth up to $7 million, per source.

Rankins spent 2023 in Houston before a year in Cincinnati, but now returns to DeMeco Ryans’ defense.

NEWS: Stefon Diggs in Houston for Rodeo

Former Houston Texans wide receiver and current free agent Stefon Diggs was spotted at the Houston Rodeo yesterday. He was donning a cowboy hat, belt buckle, and frills outside at the NRG rodeo grounds.

The star WR being in Houston the day before free agency kicks off is a good sign for the Texans to resign him, but it is also reported the Houston Texans aren’t in the market for Diggs.

Texans re-signing DT Mario Edwards Jr. to 2-year, $9.5 million deal

Mario Edwards will return to the Texans defense after recording 12 starts during the 2024 seasons.

The Texans are once again re-signing one of their own as they agreed to terms with defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. on a new two-year, $9.50 million deal. Edwards returns after starting 12 games in 2024, his most since the 2017 campaign when he was a member of the Raiders.

The #Texans have agreed to terms with DL Mario Edwards on a two-year, $9.5 million deal to return to Houston, source says. His 12 starts last season were the most for him since 2017.

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 11, 2025

At 30 years old, Edwards was a key contributor for the Texans defense in his first season with the team, recording 31 tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries.

Edwards now rejoins a defensive line group that currently employs Tim Settle Jr., Folorunso Fatukasi, Sheldon Rankins, and Tommy Togiai.

Prior to joining the Texans in 2024, Edwards spent time with the Seahawks (2023), Titans (2022), Bears (2020-2021), Saints (2019), and Giants (2018). Edwards originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick of the Raiders during the 2015 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Florida State.

Texans “defense wins championships”

NFL: Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans

Demeco Ryans in charge of a formidable force

We’ve all heard it: The NFL is a copycat league

and

Defenses win championships

The current reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles won the crown with a stifling defense that not only overcame the Patrick Mahomes, Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs, they overcame the KC Refs as well.

Now, only a few days into 2025 NFL Free Agency, head coach Demeco Ryans and your Houston Texans have amassed one of the most formidable defenses in all the land.

Here’s a quick recap (as of this writing) of new/returning Texans defenders:

ESPN

Mario Edwards Jr., DT

Edwards is returning to the Texans on a two-year, $9.5 million deal.

What it means: Edwards is an effective run stopper, as he was tied for third in run stuffs (six) per Next Gen Stats, and provides good rotational depth at defensive tackle.

M.J. Stewart, S

The Texans are bringing back Stewart on a one-year deal.

What it means: Stewart is a backup safety with special teams value. He played 83% of the Texans’ special teams snaps last season.

Tremon Smith, CB

Smith joins Houston on a two-year contract worth $7.5 million.

What it means: Smith’s value is on special teams. He played 85% and 82% of the Broncos’ special team snaps in the last two seasons, respectively.

Darrell Taylor, DE

The Texans have agreed to terms with the former Chicago Bears defensive end on a one-year deal worth $5 million.

What it means: Taylor has flashed the ability to sack quarterbacks after having 9.5 in his second year. He hasn’t reached over 6 since, but he’s only heading into Year 5. So the Texans add more capable depth.

Derek Barnett, DE

Barnett returns to the Texans on a one-year, $5 million contract.

What it means: Barnett provides effective depth at the defensive end position for the Texans after he totaled five sacks last season. He also led Houston’s defense in scoring touchdowns as he returned two fumbles for touchdowns.

Sheldon Rankins, DT

Rankins joins Houston on a one-year, $7 million contract.

What it means: This is the start of a slight overhaul for Houston’s defensive tackle room as Mario Edwards and Foley Fatukasi, who started a combined 23 games in 2024 for the Texans, are free agents. Neither are expected to return, so Rankins is part of the overhaul. He had six sacks during his 2023 stint with Houston, so the Texans hope to see something similar in 2025.

Kurt Hinish, DT

The Texans are bringing back Hinish on a one-year deal.

What it means: Hinish adds depth to the defensive tackle room as he’s played in 42 games in his career for the Texans.

Plus this killer trade went down:

CBSNews: Eagles trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Texans for Kenyon Green

CJGJ had six interceptions, 12 pass deflections and one forced fumble in 16 regular-season games in 2024. Pro Football Focus gave him a 76.0 grade, 21st out of 170 NFL safeties. He was one of the Eagles’ team leaders on defense.

DE Will Anderson Jr. - 16.9% Pressure rate (5th)

DT Tim Settle - 9.2% Pressure rate (54th)

That’s 54 total sacks right there. 54. FIFTY FOUR. (2 more than the Texans o-line surrendered in 2024 for those keeping score at home).

And then there’s this:

Now give Demeco and general manager Nick Caserio some room to rebuild the O-Line and this team is going to be a contender.

Are you excited yet?

Houston Texans Free Agency: Standout Safety Acquired

The Eagles defeat the Rams 37-20 in NFL week 12

The Texans added another great player to their secondary.

General Manager Nick Caserio added standout safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from the Eagles via trade, which included sending former first-round left guard Kenyon Green to Philadelphia.

A rare player for player trade that could benefit both sides. Philadelphia is known for their offensive line talent, which is led by offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, and that is likely the best landing spot possible for Green, who is looking to reach the potential that allowed him to be drafted fifteenth-overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

While Houston adds another extremely talented, high energy player to their already impressive secondary.

I feel like CJ Gardner Johnson is someone you keep no matter what.

You can't teach passion.

— It'sAPhillyThing (@EaglesStrictly) March 11, 2025

Gardner-Johnson is the type of player that is not only productive on the field, intercepting thirteen passes throughout the past three years, but is also someone that you can count on to bring energy into the defense each and every week.

Green could end up working out for the Eagles, but regardless, this is a homerun move by the Houston Texans front office.
