Houston Texans NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Stagnation

gettyimages-2244228794.jpg

We all have our habits, good and bad. Morning routine, afternoon smoke, evening shower, you could even fit three in a day if you’re feeling lucky! There’s a great variety of hobbies and habits to enrapture yourself in, but many of us reading this website share one – we all choose to watch the Texans on Sundays. We all had a moment where we sat in front of the television and decided that this football team was for us. Every Sunday, a new generation of Houston Texans fans are born, eye affixed to the glistening Battle Red and deep steel blue. And, just like us, all of these new fans will have to get accustomed to games like last Sunday’s vs. the Broncos.

— James Roy (@JamesRoyNFL) November 5, 2025

A game where the Texans scored zero touchdowns, five field goals, and lost their starting quarterback and right tackle. A game where the Texans failed to score from the one-yard line on two separate drives, and gained only one first down the entire second half. A game where the new fans will wonder what kind of trap they’ve just stepped in, and the old ones will just embrace the squalor as a return to form. Why protest? Why complain? This has been the Texans all along: a great defense doomed to mediocrity via catastrophe on offense.

This is what they are, and despite their extreme measures, this is what they are meant to be. At least, that’s what many of the power rankings pundits will believe after this terrifying showing at NRG Stadium right after Halloween. Against the red-hot Denver Broncos, Houston played fantastic defense, got a boost from their special teams, completely cratered on offense with backup QB Davis MIlls playing in the second half, and vindicated every Texans skeptic across the country. Now, the path to a winning season has become very steep, and Houston will have a long climb back to restoring widespread confidence in their organization.

Here’s where the Houston Texans are ranked entering Week 10 of the 2025 NFL Season:

NFL.COM:

18. Houston Texans (3-5) (Last Week: 16)
Each loss makes the climb that much more difficult, and Sunday’s setback to the Broncos came with an added tax. C.J. Stroud left the game with a concussion, and his status will be the current focus, with two straight division contests coming up next. Davis Mills came out ready to throw against the Broncos, but he had very little going in the second half against a good Denver defense. The Texans gained just 87 yards on 27 second-half plays, watching their tenuous eight-point lead dissolve over the final 20 minutes. They controlled the clock most of the game and held the Broncos in check but couldn’t get key stops in the fourth quarter. Houston can still climb back to .500 with wins over the Jaguars and Titans, but we don’t yet know if Stroud will be able to help.

ESPN:

Week 9 result: Lost to the Broncos 18-15
Week 9 ranking: 17
Most important game remaining:Week 10 vs. the Jaguars
If the Texans lose this next game, they’d be staring at a 3-6 record. It also would mean being swept by a divisional opponent, which would hurt the Texans in potential tiebreaker scenarios and put them in a position to have to run the table for any chance at the playoffs. They presently have a 10% chance to make the postseason, per the FPI, while the Jaguars have a 55% chance. — DJ Bien-Aime

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED:

22. Houston Texans (3–5)

Last week’s ranking: No. 18
Last week’s result: lost to Broncos, 18–15
This week: vs. Jaguars

One incredible aspect of Sunday’s Texans loss to the Broncos is that all of Houston’s points were a direct result of some fantastic special teams play. Not only is the Texans’ defense playing at a first-class level, but Frank Ross’s special teams unit is once again among the best in the NFL.

BLEACHER REPORT:

21. Houston Texans (3-5)
Last Week: 17
Week 9 Result: Lost 18-15 vs. Denver
The Houston Texans tumbled in our power rankings, and their playoff hopes are in dire straits.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud exited the previous game with a concussion. With him, Houston struggled to engineer touchdown drives. If he’s out for the team’s upcoming matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans could be looking at back-to-back losses at a crucial point in the season.
Expect Houston to play with desperation and urgency regardless of Stroud’s Week 10 status in a critical game if it wants a shot at retaining the AFC South title and a playoff spot.

CBS SPORTS:

20. Texans (3-5) (Last Week: 14)
Their season might be on the line against the Jaguars this week, and C.J. Stroud is in the concussion protocol. That’s not good.

USA TODAY:

14. Houston Texans (15): Three of their next four games are against AFC South opponents. Time for the reigning division champs to take it up a notch − though they may have to do that initially without QB C.J. Stroud.

YAHOO! SPORTS:

The Texans probably win Sunday if C.J. Stroud hadn’t been out with a concussion, which he got when he was hit while sliding. The Texans’ offense is certainly not good enough to overcome that. The Texans can’t afford many more losses, but Stroud might not play next week vs. Jacksonville.

THE ATHLETIC:

21. Houston Texans (3-5)
Last week: 17
Sunday: Lost to Broncos 18-15
Midseason grade: C-
The Texans may have the best defense in the NFL and still can’t get to .500, in part because of how bad their offensive line is. They have struggled to run the ball (29th in rushing EPA per play) and might be without C.J. Stroud (concussion) next week.
Up next: vs. Jaguars, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

PRO FOOTBALL TALK:

20. Texans (No. 17; 3-5): The defense is great, but a great defense isn’t enough.

Mike Florio

gettyimages-2244228670.jpg

Far above the heads of the Texans lie AFC competitors like the Steelers, Chargers, and the dreaded Colts. There is really no good reason for Houston not to be in the middle of wildcard candidates such as these, other than the powers that be decided to try something really different on offense this year, and it has not worked. Taking a big swing at that side of the ball was a wise decision, but in hindsight, it is safe to say that they tried to rebuild too much too quickly. At this point, the Texans season is not over, but they will be chasing the tails of AFC playoff leaders for the rest of the season.

What do you think, though? Are the Texans doomed to a disappointing season, or will their offense get back in shape once CJ Stroud returns? Will Houston be able to make up for their October blues, or are they better off looking forward to 2026? Let us know in the comments below!

Breaking: CJ Stroud OUT Vs. Jaguars, Davis Mills Will Start

gettyimages-2244226921.jpg

If the most recent Houston Texans injury report didn’t provide you with enough bad news for the day, buckle up: head coach DeMeco Ryans announced starting quarterback CJ Stroud currently remains in concussion protocol, and will miss Houston’s Week 10 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Texans HC DeMeco Ryans said QB CJ Stroud “will be out” this week versus the Jaguars as he remains in concussion protocol. Texans QB Davis Mills starts. pic.twitter.com/ruGBhQ32Tj

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 5, 2025

This comes as a massive gut punch to the entire Houston Texans organization and fanbase, who are still reeling from the last-second loss to the Denver Broncos. Sitting with a 3-5 record, the Texans can’t afford many more, if any, losses for the rest of the season, and now one of their franchise leaders will be unavailable in the next game.

— Houston Texans PR (@TexansPR) November 5, 2025

In Stroud’s place steps fifth year quarterback Davis Mills, who will make his first start since that legendary 2022 season finale against the Indianapolis Colts. Even though it was a completely meaningless game between two bad teams, Mills’ took advantage of this last start and went 22 of 38 (57.9 Cmp%) for 298 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 87.4 passer rating. And, lest us never forgot the veritable, incomparable, mini hail-mary:

This is why I will always love Davis Mills pic.twitter.com/4RFoAxec7U

— Colts Coverage (@Colts_Coverage) August 2, 2024

This ridiculous touchdown pass, followed up by the game-winning two-point conversion, would end up knocking the Texans out of the first overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft and into the second pick – where they would select none other than CJ Stroud. This seemingly meaningless game has since gone down in the history books of Texans fans and draftnicks alike, becoming a game that would have a butterfly effect on multiple NFL teams.

Unfortunately, Davis Mills did not inspire as much hype and excitement when filling in for Stroud in last week’s game against the Broncos. Filling in for CJ Stroud after he exited the game last Sunday, Mills went 17 of 30 for 137 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, a 68.3 passer rating, and precisely one first down in the entire second half. Yeah…ew. The pressure will be on Mills next Sunday as well, facing a division rival that Houston has already lost to earlier in the season. If the Texans want to give themselves even a shadow of a chance of winning the AFC South for the third time in a row, winning this game will be paramount.

'I'm ready, go out there and lead the guys' #Texans quarterback Davis Mills who will start against #Jaguars @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/kBoGnQsL6A

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) November 5, 2025

Seasoned Davis Mills viewers know that the Jaguar’s game can go one of two directions: either Davis Mills will throw dime after dime down the hashes, cut up the middle of the Jags’ defense and go full gunslinger, or he will be one of the most inaccurate and inefficient quarterbacks you’ve ever seen step onto the gridiron. Mills’ short career as a starter in Houston was marred by frustrating inconsistency, but general manager Nick Caserio’s decision to stick with his very first draft pick in Houston by giving him a one-year, $7 million extension signals confidence that he’s become a reliable backup. So, despite the recent sampling, it’s safe to say anything can happen against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What do you think, though? Will Davis Mills return to the highs we saw against the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 or the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, or will he crumble under the pressure of making his first start in over two years? Personally, even though I was once brandished the Mills flag proudly, I’m still a little burned by last week’s second half disaster, so I’m cautiously optimistic. Let us know your thoughts on Mills down in the comments below!

American Hero Case Keenum. | Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images

Hello, good evening and welcome to week 10 of the NFL season.

Tonight, Thursday Night Football is going west. Well, mountain west anyway. It’s a prime time AFC West matchup that somehow does not include the Chiefs. I don’t know if it was intentional or if someone made a mistake creating the schedule or what.

But I’m not complaining, either. Well, not about that anyway.

Here’s what you need to know to watch tonight’s game (preferably on mute to avoid that stupid incomplete chant they do in Denver):

Who: Las Vegas Raiders (2-6) at Denver Broncos (7-2)

What: Thursday Night Football

Where: Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, Denver, CO

When: Thursday, November 6, 7:15 p.m. CST

Why: Because we need to see if Pete Carroll gets hormonal during the game.

How: Amazon Prime Video*, NFL+* (*subscriptions required)

Enjoy the game, y’all.

Go, Texans!

Redrafting the Houston Texans 2022 Draft Class

gettyimages-2230460551.jpg

It’s been three and a half seasons since the 2022 rookie class took the field and Texans fans have a good sense of who hit and who missed. Many of the woes the team is experiencing in the 2025 season are due to the mistakes of this class. Offensive line Conversely, the strength of the Texans stems from two key picks early in this class.

It’s difficult to call an entire class a disappointment when there’s an All Pro amongst the mix, but its difficult not to be disgusted at the number of high-draft picks that didn’t make it through their rookie contracts.

In today’s article, we’ll review the class and redraft players based on how they’ve performed thus far in their career. Several constraints to how I approached the redraft: if a player was already off the board at the time of the selection he could not be selected. Additionally, I tried to maintain relative draft pick value, which means I’m not selecting Brock Purdy in the second round (or at all, actually). The goal is to maintain some sort of reality of what a class would look like rather than every single Pro-Bowler or All-Pro drafted this year.

Round 1, Pick 3: Derek Stingley Jr., CB – LSU (Original Pick: Derek Stingley Jr.)

Rationale: Stingley Jr. is one of six All-Pros in this class, all of which are defensive backs. While CB Sauce Gardner is the only one with two All-Pro selections, Stingley’s play has been most consistent this season and has performed better against elite WR talent. Gardner was selected one pick after Stingley and the two will forever be compared with one another, but Stingley’s longevity appears more clear than Sauce’s.

The other option in this class is Trent McDuffie. McDuffie is one of the best CBs in the NFL and was selected with the 21st overall pick. McDuffie doesn’t have the statistical production that Stingley has, but that’s because teams completely avoid him in the passing game. Still opting with our guy.

Round 1, Pick 15: Tyler Linderbaum, C (Original Pick: Kenyon Green, G)

Rationale: Linderbaum has established himself as one of the NFL’s top centers, and the Texans desperately needed talent on the interior of their offensive line. This move would solidify the center position for the foreseeable future. Linderbaum was selected with the 23rd overall pick, was 7th in the rookie of the year voting, and has made two Pro Bowls since joining Baltimore.

The Texans originally held the 13th pick from the Cleveland Browns as a part of the Deshaun Watson trade. Houston traded back two places for a haul of draft picks they would use and re-trade throughout the 2022 draft weekend. Unfortunately, that move back two spots changed the entire complexion of the Texans franchise for the worse.

The list of players selected before Kenyon Green is astonishingly impressive: Drake London, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jameson Williams, Jordan Davis, and Kyle Hamilton are all legitimate talents in the league.

If I could go back and undo the trade to select two-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton I would. Combining Stingley and Hamilton on the same secondary would have completely changed the complexion of the defense and thus not led Houston to select. Jalen Pitre in 27 picks. Maybe for a different article.

Before Green was selected, Houston had Tytus Howard slated to play left guard with Charlie Heck and Justin McCray on the right. Adding Green was meant to push Howard back over to the right tackle spot long-term, but it instead created a three-year long void at the position.

❗️TRADE❗

We’ve traded picks 15, 124, 162, and 166 to the Texans for pick 13.

@LifeBrand_AI | #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/q7yWbnZuzd

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) April 29, 2022

Round 1, Pick 37: Nic Bonito, OLB – Oklahoma (Original Pick: Jalen Pitre, S)

Rationale: There were many premier talents on the board who have collected more accolades than Pitre, even though Pitre has been the cornerstone of the Texans defense in this new era. He exemplifies grit, plays a key role in DeMeco Ryans’ defense, and allows the team to play aggressive in both run support and coverage. Pitre currently is second tackles with 227… for the entire draft class.

It’s also unfortunate RB Breece Hall was chosen right before Pitre. Even so, Bonito gets the nod here as one of the best and most underrated pass rushers in the NF. With 31 career sacks and a Pro Bowl nod in 2024, he is disruptive and an ascending talent. He’s second in the class in sacks and has been completely healthy his entire career. He was picked in the second round by the Denver Broncos and signed a big $106M contract in September.

Round 2, Pick 44: George Pickens, WR – Georgia (Original Pick: John Metchie III, WR)

Rationale: Additional offensive line support in either Cam Jurgens (C for the Eagles) or Abraham Lucas (RT for Seattle) were considered, but Houston needed offensive firepower badly. So badly they traded picks 78, 108, and 124 to the Cleveland Browns to acquire the 44th overall pick, which they used on Metchie. Imagine if they kept all those picks who they could have added…

The selection of Pickens mainly allows the Texans to divert future draft picks away from the WR position and to more pressing needs. While Pickens isn’t a SWARM mentality-type player, it’s hard to deny his incredible skill when everything is right.

George Pickens is third in the class in receiving yards (3,605) and tied for third in touchdowns (18). Paired with a young and undeveloped Nico Collins, Houston would have one of the taller downfield combinations the league has ever seen. He would have also paired well with veteran Brandin Cooks in the slot.

Round 3, Pick 75: Kerby Joseph, CB – Illinois (Original Pick: Christian Harris, LB)

Rationale: Two years ago, this would have remained Harris. His breakout second-year campaign was capped off with an incredible pick-six against the Browns in the playoffs. Since then, injuries and competition have stymied his playing time. Now, he’s a backup on a deep and veteran defense.

Instead, Houston goes with one of my favorite gems from this class, Kerby Joseph. The class’ leader in interceptions and fifth in tackles, the safety can check most of the boxes left empty by Jalen Pitre. Joseph has been a healthy and dependable asset in the Lions ascent to NFL relevance. While he hasn’t received a Pro Bowl or All Pro nod, he’s one of the most consistent players and would be ideal in a Texans defense.

Round 4, Pick 107: Jake Ferguson, TE – Wisconsin (Original Pick: Dameon Pierce, RB)

Rationale: This pick was the second part of the Deshaun Watson trade package in 2022.

Dameon Pierce was the second pick in the fourth round and was a one-hit wonder. The fall from grace after an epic rookie season will live in Houston Texans lore forever. Instead, Houston adds one of the premier tight ends in the NFL in the fourth round. Ferguson’s blocking and pass catching versatility would have completely redefined the Texans offense today. I did consider Trey McBride, but his second-round grade was too high compared to the value of selecting Ferguson in the fourth. J-Ferg has the second most yards, receptions, and touchdowns out of all tight ends in this class.

Round 5, Pick 150: Kyren Williams, RB – Notre Dame (Original Pick: Teagan Quitoriano, TE)

Rationale: With a class consisting of Breece Hall, James Cook, Kenneth Walker Jr., Brian Robinson Jr., and Isiah Pacheco, Williams leads all of them in rushing TDs (29), second in reaching TDs (8), and second in rushing yards (3,168). The fifth-round pick came out of nowhere to be the pre-eminent back in Los Angeles. Adding him instead of Dameon Pierce would have saved multiple future low-end running back draft picks as well as shelling out major salary capital for Joe Mixon. Williams would be an ideal fit in Caley’s offense given his ability to catch passes out of the backfield and still run hard in between the tackles.

Round 6, Pick 205: Isiah Pacheco, RB – Rutgers (Original Pick: Austin Deculus, T)

Rationale: Sure, Houston picking back-to-back RBs late in the draft would have been implausible, but considering the three on the roster pre-draft were Rex Burkhead, Dare Ogunbowale, and Royce Freeman… it’s not all that unlikely. Pacheco paired with Williams would have been not only an incredible underdog storyline, but would bring a tenacity to the Texans run game they’ve missed. Pacheco is often injured, but a gritty runner with great versatility. He has been a cornerstone piece in the Chiefs’ offense since his rookie season.

Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: Several Starters Ruled OUT

imagn-27425981.jpg

Although no touchdowns were scored, the Texans offense started off well against the Denver Broncos, and it looked like Stroud was about to have a very impressive day, until he suffered a concussion on a late-slide attempt that will now keep him out this weekend against the Jaguars.

Houston’s defense has been great all year, they just need some help on offense, and that help may not be happening this season.

An already beat down Texans team is set to be without several pieces. Here is a look at Friday’s injury report:

Did Not Participate

-DB Jalen Pitre (Concussion) OUT

-QB C.J. Stroud (Concussion) OUT

-RT Tytus Howard (Concussion) OUT

-RG Ed Ingram (Knee) OUT

-K Ka’imi Fairbairn (Quad) OUT

-LB Christian Harris (Shin) OUT

Full Participation

-WR Braxton Berrios (Chest)

-RB Nick Chubb (Foot)

-RB Dameon Pierce (Personal)

-FB Jakob Johnson (Hamstring) OUT

-DE Will Anderson Jr. (Quad)

-TE Dalton Schultz (Knee / Shoulder)

-TE Harrison Bryant (Shoulder) QUESTIONABLE

-DE Dylan Horton (Knee)

-DE Denico Autry (Knee)

The Texans have an extremely long injury report this week, and will be down several starters. The quarterback situation will be one to monitor, with Davis Mills getting the start. Mills looked solid in the first half of the Broncos game, and after adjustments were made, things fell apart.

Houston will be going up against an also beat up Jaguars team, and it feels like it will be another defensive battle.

Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: Secure the Win

imagn-27379042.jpg

The Texans are now in must-win territory after dropping several games they had a chance to win late in the fourth quarter.

Houston’s defense might be the best in the entire league this year, but it doesn’t matter if they can’t score points on a consistent basis. The Texans’ offensive line hasn’t been able to perform against good defensive fronts, which puts quarterback C.J. Stroud in an extremely tough spot.

Stroud has the potential to be an elite quarterback in this league, but it’s hard to elevate your game when everything around you has regressed. Offensive coordinator Nick Caley has not been as advertised through the first half of the season, and he may not be in Houston much longer if these questionable play calls and roster decisions continue.

It’s clear the Texans have talent in the wide receiver room, but it feels like they’re not being put in positions to succeed — even star wideout Nico Collins. Far too often, he’s not involved the way he should be, and it’s tough to watch.

Houston made two major investments at receiver in the draft, selecting Iowa State teammates Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Both have flashed when given the opportunity, but neither has seen the field as much as they should. Instead of getting the rookies more involved, the Texans have leaned on veteran Christian Kirk, who’s been banged up all season and hasn’t produced at the level needed even when healthy.

Despite the inconsistency on offense, the Texans have been in every game this season and should still be competitive on Sunday — even without C.J. Stroud, who suffered a concussion against the Broncos.

Davis Mills will start at quarterback, and it’s crucial to get him going early. Caley needs to dial up easy throws to build confidence and let him rip it when the opportunity is there. Mills made some impressive throws early against Denver but fell off in the second half — understandable against that kind of defense.

Jacksonville’s defense isn’t as good as Denver’s, but their front is strong, which will make things tough for Houston given all the injuries. Still, it’s not impossible if the defense can create turnovers.

This is one of those games where, no matter how ugly it looks, finding a way to beat a division rival — especially without your starting quarterback and several key players — would go a long way.

NFL Scorigami: Texans vs Jaguars final score has never happened in NFL history

gettyimages-2245894353.jpg

An NFL final score of 36 to 29 has never happened in NFL history until today. When the Houston Texans returned the ball for a last-second score against the Jacksonville Jaguars and declined to go for the extra point, we got NFL Scorigami for the third tie this season.

An NFL “Scorigami” is a final score that’s never happened before in the history of the league. Scorigami has been happening more and more as teams use analytics to go for two, offenses are scoring more points than ever, and sometimes weird stuff just happens.

Thie is the 1094th unique score in NFL history and the third Scorigami this season. The Buffalo Bills’ thrilling 41-40 Week 1 game and the 40-40 tie between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers were also Scorigami.

Often, the Scorigami is a result of a weird scoring play. In this game, the Jaguars started the weirdness going for two in the third quarter and failing. Not a lot of easy ways to get to 29 points. The Texans had their own failed two-point conversions and then decided not to attempt a PAT.

Incidentally, a 37-29 final score has happened four times. That would not have been a Scorigami if the Texans kicked the extra point.

There are still nearly 1400 NFL scores that have never happened, so it’s not a phenomenon that is going away any time soon.

Our friends at Secret Base just so happen to be in the middle of an extensive series on Scorigami right now. You can watch tit on YouTube. Here is Part 1:

Value of Things: By the numbers

It’s hard to look at a game like Sunday’s dispassionately, but that is what we are called to do in this segment. The By the Numbers segment looks at the numbers of NFL games to predict which categories will lead most to success and failure. Some of the numbers may surprise you when you look at a 36-29 result. In point of fact, the game was a 30-29 game for all effect and purposes.

As we do in most wins, we will look at the great, good, and bad in this one. The other three Texans victories were effectively blowouts where there was very little negative that could be taken from the game. That wasn’t the case in this one as the Texans trailed 17-0 early on and 29-10 in the third quarter. Some very negative things happened to get them to that point.

The Numbers

  • Total Yards: Texans 69/412, Jaguars 55/213
  • Rushing Yards: Texans 22/130, Jaguars 27/94
  • Passing Yards: Texans 47/282, Jaguars 28/119
  • Return Yardage: Texans 4/79, Jaguars 8/250
  • Sacks: Texans 5, Jaguars 2
  • Third Downs: Texans 10/15, Jaguars 4/11
  • Turnovers: Texans 2, Jaguars 2
  • Penalties: Texans 11/80, Jaguars 9/90
  • Time of Possession: Texans 31:00, Jaguars 29:00

Don’t let the score fool you. This was mostly a defensive battle for three quarters of the game. The Jaguars got seven points off of a punt return and ten points gift wrapped on turnovers deep in Texans territory. Sure, they could have held them to a field goal on the second one, but the Texans offense and special teams all but spotted them 17 points to start the game.

The fact that the Texans clearly outplayed them in two games and finished 1-1 is a tiny microcosm of what has gone wrong this season. Heck, they needed a miracle to win this one. We certainly can get to this in the great, good, and bad, but this has been a hallmark of the Ryans’ regime. He wins most of his games and for that we are grateful, but the wins come a lot harder than they should.

The Great

This is the best defense in the NFL. Full stop. They lead the NFL in the only category that really matters (points allowed) but they make opposing quarterbacks miserable every Sunday. Daniele Hunter had his best game as a Texan and that is saying something considering the numbers he has put up the last year and a half. He took over the game in the fourth quarter and single-handedly caused one three and out on his own. Will Anderson wasn’t far behind and Sheldon Rankins did have the fumble/interception for the pick six at the end.

We cannot underscore this enough. That comeback is impossible if the Texans defense doesn’t force three three and outs in a row. With their kicker, Jacksonville could have gotten two first downs at the very end of the game and erased the entire comeback effort. Give Davis Mills his flowers (and we will) but this win doesn’t happen without the defense single-handedly deciding they were going to drag the offense over the finish line. They could have thrown in the towel in the third quarter, but they kept fighting.

We should probably also bring up Derek Stingley who had his best game of the season. The one-handed interception before half-time kept three points off the board and he had a couple of other brilliant pass breakups as well. His season has been largely up and down, but he quietly has three picks at the half-way point of the season which matches Kamari Lassiter. They are the best corner tandem in football.

The Good

The masthead chat line will provide the goods on this one. We were ready to write Mills off in the first half of this game. He absolutely deserves a hat tip for gutting it out and turning in one of the better performances of any backup quarterback in the league this season. He earned his money yesterday. Now, let’s be realistic here. He still missed some throws and held the ball too long in some instances. He doesn’t have elite athleticism or elite arm talent. Great defenses will expose him.

The goal of any backup quarterback is to finish with a .500 record in the games where the starter can’t go. keep your team in the game and your playoff hopes alive. That’s the bar. He absolutely met the bar, so having him under contract for another season becomes a good thing, Everyone on offense (except Christian Kirk) contributed to this one in some for or fashion. It was an ensemble approach that Nick Caserio probably dreamed up when he put this team together.

In particular, I have to give some kudos to Nick Caley. I’m not ready to take back everything I’ve said to date, but for this one game he followed the flow of the game and put in the guys most likely to make plays. You silence the critics by stacking positive performances together. He has never been able to have back to back strong games to date. If he can stack another one next week then he might start climbing out of the doghouse. However, it will be the next time he faces a good defense that will tell the tale.

The Bad

The article says bad, but we may have to switch this to ugly. I don’t normally include return yardage in my statistical breakdown because it rarely ever makes a huge difference one way or another. This was easily the worst special teams performance by the Texans this season and it almost cost them the game. In addition to the punt return for the touchdown, you had a personal foul on a field goal attempt, and three other lengthy returns that forced the defense to make big plays to prevent more points.

I thought Frank Ross was going to decapitate someone on the spot following some of those gaffes. If his tenure is any indication, we will not see those problems again next week. He is as solid as they come as a coordinator. However, that performance is just another symptom (along with the penalties) that there is usually something with this team that keeps them from totally dominating an opponent. It’s how a team that has allowed the least points in football can have a losing record. It’s how a team that outgains its opponent two to one can play a squeaker. I’ll never trash a coach following a win, but I also won’t ignore in a win what I would harp on in defeat.

Houston Texans NFL Power Rankings Week 11: The Return of the Mills

gettyimages-2245892823.jpg

The season has been on the line for the Texans since September. Three weeks into the regular season schedule and without a win to show, it quickly became obvious to those watching that this was going to be a difficult year for Houston. Regardless of whether or not the struggle was justified, Houston was not the powerhouse Texans fans have to come to expect after two very successful years with quarterback CJ Stroud at the helm. Losing the first three games in a row to start the big 2025 season put both the team and fans in a crisis of confidence that is rarely seen so early in the year, especially for a two-time defending division champion. The defense had remained the same, but the offense had become such a liability that new offensive coordinator Nick Caley had become one of the most decried coaches in the city of Houston before he had even finished unpacking his bags from Los Angeles.

Despite all of the hullabaloo, though, Houston continued to cling on. Entering NRG Stadium in week 10 to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans had done an admirable job rebounding from the ugly start, eking to a record of 3-5 at the midway point. Not dead…but, everyone in the building knew on Sunday that this was a must-win game. At this point of the season, a 3-6 record and a 1-2 division record would practically be a death knell with eight games left to play. And then, you saw the injury report:

Houston #Texans Friday Injury Report & Game Status Report for Week 10 vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars: pic.twitter.com/Y5IJ2kahv3

— Houston Texans PR (@TexansPR) November 7, 2025

Now, the entire season was in dire straits. All of this pressure to win with an injured team will not fall on the shoulders of CJ Stroud, but Davis Mills! Then the game arrives, and the Texans have arguably the worst start to a football game in franchise history, crescendoing with a 73-yard punt return touchdown by Jacksonville’s Parker Washington to put the Jaguars up 17-0 with 11:40 left in the second quarter. Suddenly, it became clear Davis Mills can’t just play in this game – he’s going to have to win it. And at that moment, down 17-0 just 20 minutes into the game, it looked like this team of backups and band-aids had finally met their maker. Down by three possessions, desperate times were calling for desperate measures. In his first game starting since the famous (or infamous) 2022 season finale against the Indianapolis Colts, Davis Mills would have to lead one of the biggest comebacks in Texans history.

AND. HE. DID!

Another insane throw from Davis Mills

Great job to not only make the catch but to hold on thru contact pic.twitter.com/QiqDChnNs8

— JaysonBraddock (@JaysonBraddock) November 10, 2025

Down for the count and facing a despondent fanbase, Davis Mills led the Texans to two scoring drives to end the half, and then had three straight touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to take the lead with 31 seconds left in the game. He threw dime after dime to Nico Collins, Jayden Higgins, and Dalton Schultz, who accounted for nearly all of Mills’ completions in the fourth quarter. He was even complemented by several great runs by both Nick Chubb and Woody Marks, who continue to be a big part of Texans victories. And all of this would be for not if wasn’t for an incalculably valuable defensive line, which forced the Jags to two three-and-outs and a fumble in the fourth quarter, primarily thanks to the unblock-able Danielle Hunter. After he and the other mighty linemen tied a bow on the game with a sack fumble of Trevor Lawrence which was then returned for a defensive touchdown by Sheldon Rankins, the Texans had completed their second largest comeback in franchise history (they had a 21-point comeback vs. the Chargers in 2013), and the Jaguars had lost a game for the first time in franchise history where they were up by 19 points. They were 53-0 entering NRG Stadium on Sunday, and were 53-1 leaving!

Surely, this must have restored some confidence in the Texans amongst the power rankings’ crew of pundits. A historic win like this must mean something, right? RIGHT?!?! Well, without further ado and celebration, here’s where the Houston Texans are ranked entering Week 11 of the 2025 NFL Season:

NFL.COM

17. Houston Texans (4-5) (Last Week: 18)
We might look back at Davis Mills’ fourth-quarter heroics against Jacksonville as the turning point of Houston’s season. The Texans looked dead and buried before he led the furious comeback, preventing Houston from falling to 3-6 and giving the team another critical division victory. The Texans sit in third place in the AFC South, and C.J. Stroud remains in concussion protocol early in the week. But they remain only two spots out of the final wild-card bid, and the Texans are as good defensively as almost anyone in the NFL, so they remain a threat, even with work to be done. A win at Tennessee this Sunday would get them back to .500, and that’s followed by a three-game stretch against AFC contenders who’ve all shown some vulnerabilities lately. If Houston can win in Nashville and then take at least two of those next three, the playoffs remain a reasonable goal.

ESPN:

Week 10 result: Beat the Jaguars 36-29
Week 10 ranking: 20
Howard has performed as a premier right tackle, giving up the third-lowest pressure rate among tackles with at least 200 pass blocking snaps (4.6). His time to pressure rate is also top 10, as it takes 3.28 seconds to allow pressure — the ninth longest among right tackles. For an offensive line going through a lot of changes, he has been a constant.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED:

17. Houston Texans
Last week’s ranking: No. 22
Last week’s result: beat Jaguars, 36–29
This week: at Titans
Davis Mills was excellent on Sunday in a thrilling comeback win over the Jaguars. But what really sold me on Mills’s game-winning touchdown run was how incredibly good all of the complementary blocking was on a broken, improvised play. No flags. Total hustle.

BLEACHER REPORT:

19. Houston Texans (4-5)
Last Week: 21
Week 10 Result: Won vs. Jaguars 36-29
The Houston Texans may not be able to climb back into the AFC South race, but they can’t be counted out of the wild-card hunt just yet.
Sunday’s sensational comeback against the Jacksonville Jaguars—with Davis Mills in at quarterback for C.J. Stroud—showed they still have plenty of fight in them.
Houston is still trying to find an offensive identity, but it has a championship-caliber defense, has won four of its last six and has a chance to get to .500 next week against the lowly Titans.

CBS SPORTS:

18. Texans (Last Week: 20) (4-5)
Davis Mills saved their season against the Jaguars. Who saw that coming? They are still alive for a playoff spot.

USA TODAY:

13. Houston Texans (14): Like the Ravens, they’re a two-time-defending divisional champion that’s fought its way to a 4-5 record. Maybe the Texans can also make a charge back to the top if they get their QB1 back soon, too

YAHOO! SPORTS:

The Texans have a good enough defense to keep them in any game, and it did its job on Sunday. They’re still a significant underdog to make the playoffs, but a wild comeback win over the Jaguars gives them a little bit of hope.

THE ATHLETIC:

18. Houston Texans (4-5)
Last week: 21
Sunday: Beat Jaguars 36-29
Breakout player: Xavier Hutchinson
You won’t lose any NFL fan points if you don’t know who Hutchinson is. The wide receiver and sixth-round pick in 2023 has had an unremarkable 41-game career so far, but right now, he’s more productive than Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, who were top-80 picks this spring. Hutchinson had at least one catch in each of the first eight games this season and has almost doubled his career high for a season with 222 receiving yards on 21 catches.
Up next: at Titans, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

PRO FOOTBALL TALK:

16. Texans (No. 20; 4-5): They saved their season in the fourth quarter on Sunday.

Average Ranking: 16.89 (Last Week: 19.56)

gettyimages-2245873929.jpg

The Texans are coming on up, again! I think Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated summed it up best: not only was Davis Mills game-winning touchdown run and emphatic finish to a thrilling comeback, but the blocking he received from his teammates and particularly Woody Marks at the goal line is what’s sealed the deal. This kind of improvisational play making by Texans teammates is what has changed about the Texans since the first month of the season.

DAVIS FREAKING MILLS EVERYONE!!!!

— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) November 9, 2025

Much of what maligned the Houston Texans in September was a sort of sloppiness that made every yard difficult. They were unable to grab short gains on broken plays or scramble drills, nor were they able to rely on their new players to block when it mattered. Last Sunday, Houston showed much of that has changed, and they are now playing like a complementary football team. When they are all in sync with each other, the offense can do almost anything!

What do you think, though? Have the Texans really turned a page with this venerable victory, or were they just lucky last Sunday? Is their success on offense just a product of good fortune, or is there something legitimately spicy brewing in Houston, Texas? Let us know what you think down in the comments below! Next Sunday, the Texans travel to Tennessee to face the woebegone 1-8 Titans at Nissan Stadium at 12:00 PM CST. This could shape up to be another good game for the offense, but if this last Sunday’s thrilling comeback taught us anything, it’s that a lead is never safe in the AFC South.

GO TEXANS!!!!

Texans thinning secondary a cause for concern

imagn-27549696.jpg

It’s never a good sign when players get hurt one after another at the same position. The Texans strength this season has been their secondary, where they have two of the top 10 leaders in interceptions. Kamari Lassiter leads all CBs in tackles… and that’s not because opposing QBs are throwing at him. They are seventh in coverage grade according to PFF and have 20 pass breakups on the season.

The defense works because the Texans coverage is so dominant that Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. have enough time to get to the QB. Unfortunately, the mounting injuries to the secondary are thinning out this group heading into the back half of the season.

Just this past Sunday, the Houston Texans lost starting safety M.J. Stewart for the season due to a quad injury. He was put into an air cast and carted off mid-game. Stewart took over the starting role for C.J. Gardner-Johnson after his departure in Week 3.

Speaking of CJGJ, he was bestowed the starting safety role after the Texans traded OG Kenyon Green to the Eagles to acquire him. That only lasted three weeks until the Texans and the veteran safety mutually decided to part ways. After a string of signings and releases, he’s now making game-winning plays for the Chicago Bears. At least he’s happy…

Next, Jalen Pitre entered concussion protocol and missed last week’s matchup against the Jaguars. Pitre is so valuable to the defense, they chose to run an entirely different scheme last week. His status is unclear heading into an important matchup against the Tennessee Titans. And before you think “oh, he should just sit out that game… the Titans are terrible”, the Titans were 2-8 last year when they cruised to a 32-27 victory over Houston in NRG (I was there). Pitre is the cog that makes the system go and will be desperately needed to guard tight end Chig Okonkwo, who leads the Titans in receptions.

Rookie Jaylin Smith suffered a string of injuries this season and landed on IR last week. It’s a disappointing start to his NFL career as Smith was slated to be the perennial backup and CB3 for the team. He only played in four games this year and recorded six tackles.

So who is up next? As of now, Myles Bryant will shift roles to play the second safety position. The Texans do have several options on practice squad. D’Angelo Ross is well accustomed to playing in Houston and started two games last season in place of injured Kamari Lassiter. Ross has spent the past three seasons in Houston.

Jimmie Ward is the Monopoly Card in this deck (Catan reference). Ward is still recovering from offseason foot surgery and his domestic violence case has been dismissed. DeMeco Ryans reported he could return to practice “in a few weeks” on November 3rd. He sits on the Physically Unable to Play (PUP) List right now and has not been active since the Kansas City Chiefs game in Week 16 last year. The 34 year old is Houston’s best chance at a decent secondary option if he can return to form.

Jalen Mills is the also an option as a seasoned veteran. A career starter from 2016 – 2023, but has diminished in role and performance since then. He suited up this season against the Ravens in Week 5, but has been on the practice squad ever since. He plays safety now, but spent his career at CB for Philadelphia, New England, and the New York Jets.

A break glass option can also be undrafted rookie Alijah Huzzie from UNC. Huzzie plays nickel CB and dime CB due to his small stature. He is a perfect fit for the gritty play-style DeMeco Ryans prefers from this defensive backs. He was recently removed from the Non-Football Injury list (NFI) and moved to the practice squad. Although Huzzie went undrafted, multiple teams had fourth-round grades on the cornerback. Depending on his health, and knowledge of the defense, he could provide needed depth and high upside.

Houston is edging towards a predicament in their defensive back room. Whoever can step up over the next few weeks may earn themselves a long-term role on an elite defensive.e https://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/player/54580/

Houston Texans Safety Suffers Season-Ending Injury

gettyimages-2245488950.jpg

Yesterday, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans announced that starting safety M.J. Stewart would require season ending quad surgery:

Texans S M.J. Stewart suffered a torn quad and will miss the rest of the 2025 season, according to @AaronWilson_NFL 🙏 pic.twitter.com/tX3fyWgknA

— Nick Schwager (@NickSchwagerNFL) November 10, 2025

This comes as a destabilizing blow to the number one defense in the NFL. Houston’s defensive backfield relied heavily on Stewart after former free agent signee CJ Gardner-Johnson was released in week four after struggling to gel with the Texans’ defensive scheme.

Looks bad #Texans M.J. Stewart left leg being immobilized will be carted off @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/2sUhV1xINC

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) November 9, 2025

In his nine appearances and four starts during the 2025 regular season, M.J. Stewart tallied:

  • 228 Snaps on Defense, 102 Snaps on Special Teams
  • 30 Tackles (5 on Special Teams)
  • 2 Pass Deflections
  • 7 Reception on 12 Targets (58.3 Rec%) for 68 Yards and 1 Touchdown
  • 4 Stops
  • 1 Forced Fumble
  • 102.1 Passer Rating Allowed
  • 49.7 PFF grade

An eight year veteran in his fourth year in Houston, M.J. Stewart had become one of the unsung heroes on Houston’s dominant defense this year. Stewart has been a tackling machine since stepping up into the starting role after Gardner-Johnson’s unexpected departure. He perfectly embodies the swarm mindset that forms the base of DeMeco Ryans’ defensive philosophy, and on special teams, M.J. Stewart was a bully:

1st play of the game, big hit by MJ Stewart on kick off.

Frank Ross likes it. pic.twitter.com/UEakYOWmUT

— Houston Stressans (@TexansCommenter) October 1, 2025

Stewart had signed his third contract with Houston this year, a 1-year, $2.5 million extension with the Texans in March 2025. His instincts and athleticism made him an integral part of what current head coach DeMeco Ryans, former head coach Lovie Smith, and current special teams coordinator Frank Ross wanted to implement in Houston. So, even though M.J. Stewart may just seem like another replaceable DB on the Texans’ uber-athletic roster, his impact on the team goes much further than what is conveyed on a stat sheet.

#Texans coach DeMeco Ryans on adapting at safety to M.J. Stewart out for season with torn quad, surgery, IR @KPRC2 https://t.co/a7bkIvQzdk pic.twitter.com/OUnZFp9N3R

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) November 10, 2025

After Stewart was carted off the field during the Week 10 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans moved cornerback Myles Bryant to the starting role. Bryant, recently elevated from Houston’s practice squad, is a multi-year veteran of his own and has recent experience from playing snaps for the Texans late in the 2024 season and during the preseason. Starting safety Jalen Pitre was inactive for the game, as well, so when Houston played in nickel formation, they brought out backup cornerback Tremon Smith to play nickel.

Pitre will eventually return from injury, but Stewart won’t, so Bryant will have to adjust to the safety position and fill in Stewart’s role on defense and special teams to the best of his ability. If not Bryant, then other Texans DBs like rookie sixth round pick Jaylen Reed from Penn State, cornerback Damon Arnette (who elevated to the active roster as of Nov. 8th), veteran safety Jalen Mills, or recent practice squad signee Alijah Huzzie will need to step up.

Safety Jimmie Ward also remains on the roster after he was removed from the commissioners exempt list, but has yet to appear in a game. According to Aaron Wilson, Ward had, “…made major progress from pair of offseason foot surgeries” and, “…[the Texans are] expecting him to be ready medically to to start practicing in next few weeks” as of Sept. 24th. Despite this, he remains on the Reserve/PUP list on the Texans website.

Out of all these options, I expect Jaylen Reed and Myles Bryant to absorb the most snaps in replacement of M.J. Stewart. This could have been an opportunity for rookie third round pick Jaylin Smith to get more snaps on defense, but he was also placed on season-ending IR on Nov. 5th.

MJ Stewart closing in from 10+ yards to break up a screen. Also great recognition by WAJ to help clean up. pic.twitter.com/aBI85vLnZk

— Houston Stressans (@TexansCommenter) October 13, 2025

DeMeco Ryans also announced that quarterback CJ Stroud, right tackle Tytus Howard, and safety Jalen Pitre all remain in concussion protocol as of Monday. They will need to clear concussion protocol this week if they plan to play in Sunday’s contest against the Tennessee Titans. If not, Houston will be relying on depth once again to keep their playoff hopes alive.

We here at Battle Red Blog are wish M.J. Stewart a speedy recovery!

Texans Stats: Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans

1674445379.jpg

Your Houston Texans currently have the #1 defense in all the land. Danielle Hunter was awarded AFC Defensive Player of the Week. He a fellow quarterback predator Will Anderson Jr. are both within 3 sacks of double digits on the season.

Derek Stingley Jr. has 3 INTs so far, including an amazing 1-hander against Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. That puts him at 14 in his career, only 3 back of Jonathan Joseph, the Texans all-time leading interceptor.

Based on the #2 defense on the Los Angeles Rams facing the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, it’s very likely Hunter, Anderson, Sting and the rest carry that #1 D belt into next week as well.

The Texans defense is a clear cut #1 in the NFL after week 10.

The offense still has work to do to get into positive territory. pic.twitter.com/qYQ6KQVejd

— Will Kunkel (@WillKunkelV) November 12, 2025

Meanwhile, the BESFs are averaging a mighty 14.4 points per game with their steamrolling offense. /s

With C.J. Stroud ruled out again this week due to concussion, Davis Mills has a pretty good chance to pad his resume against a middle of the road Titans defense. A defense that will likely face utter exhaustion by the 3rd quarter after spending most of the first half on the field.

Now, the BESFs are boasting the top rookie passer, Cam Ward, who brings 1760 passing yards into this tilt. But leverage that number against the average points per game, and it’s easy to extrapolate that number is inflated due to having to the throw the ball on nearly every down.

His completion percentage is 57.8, while he’s thrown 5 touchdowns against 6 picks. Hunter, Anderson and Sting are likely jonesing for a chance to get after him this weekend.

Houston Texans Week 11 Stats

  • QB DAVIS MILLS completed 27 of 45 pass att. (60%) for 292 yards, 2 TDs & INT in Week 10.
  • RB WOODY MARKS led team with 63 rush yards on 14 carries & TD in Week 10. Aims for 2nd straight on road with rec. TD. Is 1 of 5 rookies (Emeka Egubka, Omarion Hampton, Quinshon Judkins & Cam Skattebo) with 2 games of 110+ scrimmage yards in 2025.
  • RB NICK CHUBB has 202 rush yards & TD in 2-career games vs. Ten.
  • WR NICO COLLINS led team with season-high 136 rec. yards on 7 rec. in Week 10. Has rec. TD in 2 of his last 3 on road. Aims for 3rd straight with 7+ catches.
  • TE DALTON SCHULTZ had 7 rec. for 53 yards & first rec. TD in 2025 last week.
  • WR JAYDEN HIGGINS (rookie) had 3rd rec. TD of the season last week, 4th most among rookie WRs in 2025.
  • LB AZEEZ AL-SHAIR led team with 8 tackles in Week 10 & PD. Has 6+ tackles in 3 of his last 4. Aims for 2nd in row on road with FR.
  • LB HENRY TO’OTO’O had 4 tackles, 0.5 sack & PD in Week 10.
  • DE WILL ANDERSON had sack, TFL, PD & FF last week. Aims for 5th in row with sack. Has 4 sacks in 3 career games vs. Ten.
  • DE DANIELLE HUNTER had 2nd career game with 3.5 sacks last week, 1 of 9 players with multiple games of 3.5 sacks since entering the league in 2015. Added 7 tackles & FF in Week 10. Ranks 4th in NFL in sacks (107) since 2015. Had 2 sacks in last meeting.
  • DT SHELDON RANKINS had 32-yard FR for TD last week.
  • CB DEREK STINGLEY had 3rd INT of season & 14th career in Week 10. 1 of 4 players (Jessie Bates, DaRon Bland & Kerby Joseph) with 14+ INTs since entering the league in 2022. Aims for 5th straight with PD.

Now, Houston’s defense is the talk of the town – as it should be. And, the offense is, well, not worth talking about aside from about 7 quarters so far this season. But, here’s a take that might just make this team a true threat down the stretch:

Point Blank on how to fix the Texans offense pic.twitter.com/zIM7TvKl0i

— Joel Blank (@PackManJoel) November 11, 2025

The Texans offense is currently hitting 22.7 points per game, notably behind the league average of 24.5. The AFC South Division leading Indianapolis Colts are landing 32.1 per game. And, Houston has to face the baby horses twice between now and the end of the season. #1 defenses have carried teams all the way in the past – but that was before the NFL slanted the rules so heavily in favor of scoring.

Nick Caley can’t score consistently.

AFC championship contenders can.

Thankfully, the BESFs are neither a top scoring team or a championship contender.

Tennessee Titans Week 11 Stats

  • QB CAM WARD completed 12 of 21 att. (57.1 pct.) for 145 yards in Week 9. Has TD pass in 3 of his past 4 games at home & overall. Ranks 1st among rookie QBs with 1,760 pass yards.
  • RB TONY POLLARD had 68 scrimmage yards (56 rush, 12 rec.) in Week 9. Has recorded 50+ scrimmage yards in 9 of his past 10 games, incl. each of his past 5 at home. Has 60+ rushing yards in each of past 3 games vs. Hou.
  • RB TYJAE SPEARS had 62 scrimmage yards (36 rec., 26 rush) in Week 9. Has 3+ catches in each of his past 4 games.
  • WR CHIMERE DIKE had 3 punt returns for 98 yards & 1st-career kick/punt return touchdown in Week 9. Also had 117 yards on 4 kick returns.
  • WR ELIC AYOMANOR led the team with 46 rec. yards on 3 catches last week. 1 of 5 rookies (Tetairoa McMillan (10), Tyler Warren (10), Emeka Egbuka (9) 7 Harold Fannin Jr. (9)) to record 2+ catches in 9 straight to start the season.
  • DT JEFFERY SIMMONS has sack in 3 of his past 4 games. Had 4 tackles for loss in last game vs. Hou. Has sack in 2 of his past 3 games vs. Hou.
  • NT T’VONDRE SWEAT had 3 tackles & tackle for loss in Week 9. Aims for 4th in row with TFL. Has sack in 2 of his past 3 games.
  • LB CODY BARTON had 6 tackles & 1st-career INT-TD in Week 9. Is 1 of 4 LBs (Tremaine Edmunds, Ernest Jones & Devin Lloyd) to have 3+ INTs in 2025.
  • LB CEDRIC GRAY had 16 tackles & 1st-career sack in Week 9. Is the only player this season to record 10+ tackles & TFL in 4 games. Is the only player this season to record 15+ tackles & sack in a game. 1 of 4 (Nick Bolton, Jordyn Brooks & Roquan Smith) to record 3 games of 12+ tackles.
  • LB JIHAD WARD had 4 tackles & career-high 2.5 sacks in Week 9. Has sack and TFL in 2 of his past 3 games.
  • S AMANI HOOKER had 7 tackles in Week 9. Has 6+ tackles in 5 of his past 6 games at home.

Right now we’re all riding the high of the incredible comeback Houston pulled off last weekend. It was definitely one for the ages. Unfortunately, all the 4th quarter success doesn’t erase the 1st 40 minutes of mediocrity Caley’s offense brought to the field with Davis Mills under center.

Now, Mills is a quality backup QB for sure. Possibly the best the Texans have ever had for a consistent amount of games. But he’s not proven to be the answer to “how do you win with a bad play caller?” over the course of the last several seasons.

Texans vs Titans Prediction:

Even though it’s the BESFs, expect Houston’s offensive struggles to continue, while the defense bails them out time and again.

Houston Texans – 23

Tennessee Titans – 10

And, just to appease any BESF fans reading this, here’s the always necessary reminder:

Hello, good evening and welcome to week 11 of the NFL season.

Tonight, we travel to the chilly northeast for an AFC East “battle.” The New York Jets travel to Foxboro to take on the, unfortunately, resurgent New England Patriots.

I ain’t gonna lie, this game looks like it could be ugly. Uglier than Amy Adams-Strunk’s soul (I refuse to call her Amy Adams because the actress Amy Adams doesn’t need to be associated with such ugliness).

But I digress. Here’s what you need to know for tonight’s game.

Who: New York Jets (2-7) at New England Patriots (8-2)

What: Thursday Night Football

Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA

When: Thursday, November 13, 7:15 p.m. CST

Why: Because…sorry, got too distracted thinking of Amy Adams so I don’t have one this time.

How: Amazon Prime Video*, NFL+* (*subscriptions required)

Enjoy the game, y’all.

Call me, Amy Adams (not Strunk).

Five good Texans questions with Possum Holler Tribune

gettyimages-2230460551.jpg

Week 11 brings the second of the divisional bouts with the Tennessee Titans and Cornelius Bumfuzzle of the Possum Holler Tribune was kind enough to join us for five questions for the upcoming titanic bout between the Texans and the Titans. The Possum Holler Tribune has been covering everything Tennessee sports for the past few decades. Bumfuzzle is the three time winner of the Cletus Snarbuckle Award for journalistic excellence given to the best Tennessee beat writer for a sports publication.

The Texans won the last game 26-0 and the Titans have since fired their head coach. They have struggled across the board from giving Cam Ward an offense to function out of to having a defense that can slow down anyone. We started the conversation with the number one overall pick and what Bumfuzzle has seen from the young quarterback so far.

Battle Red Blog: The Titans made a significant move when they made Cam Ward the number one overall pick. How do you feel about the young quarterback so far?

Cornelius Bumfuzzle: Dat boy can sure chuck that ball. He can sure run it too. There ain’t nobody there to catch it tho. The Titans needs to git on down there git and git themselves some ballcatchers for this kid. Them defenders need to lasso some guys too. He has to throw the ball all the time because them other guys are always them scoring. Da boy will be alright tho once we get a real ball coach in this place.

BRB: Brian Callahan was fired with less than two seasons under his belt. How much of this was his fault?

CB: Da boy could coach em up. We were the best one win team in the business I tell you what (Editor’s note: the Titans are in a distant last in the NFL with a -127 point differential). Bud Adams’ spawn has handcuffed the boys by firing everyone before those boys could git down and do der jobs. We at Possum Holler were in favor of da boy getting a chance to pick some of dem players in the next draft to help dat dere quarterback. I saw dem beat the Vols in an intersquad game. If you can beat a mediocre SEC program you can coach in da NFL.

BRB: Turning our attention to the defense, the Titans have given up the fourth most points in the NFL in spite of already having their bye. They are surrendering over 28 points a game. What do you attribute the struggles to?

CB: Struggle? Boy I oughta go over and beat you senseless. 28 points a game would be good enough to win in a lot of conferences in America. Sure, the AFC isn’t one of them. It’s not Callahan’s fault he wasn’t coaching in one of dem other leagues. Them boys need dem tackle dat guy with the ball sooner. Strunk is petitioning the league to allow thirteen defenders. Said somethen bout “unexplained diminished competence” or some such nonsense words dem college educated folk use. I just calls dem like a see em.

BRB: The Titans are all but mathematically eliminated from the divisional title. Who do Titans fans most want to see win this division? Who do you most enjoy beating?

CB: I want dem boys in Indiana to win this thing. You sophisticated boys from Houston want to steal our colors. That Columbia Blue represents excellence and performance under da pressure of da playoffs. I’ll put da Oilers playoff record up against any other pro team based in Tennessee. Why wouldn’t we want to keep dat dere legacy for ourselves. We do enjoy watching dem Glitter Kitties fumble a playoff berth year after year. It takes some of that there attention away from our boys.

BRB: FanDuel has opened the Texans up as 7.5 point favorites for Sunday’s game. How do you see the game going? Do you have any prop bets you feel comfortable recommending?

CB: Let’s see. The Titans are losing by an average of 14 points per game and they have no head coach. Sign me up for a surprise victory for the 13 man squad in Possum Holler. We gonna crunch that neck on dat dere chucker you got going and we will see your third string chucker before half time. Ward will throw a career high four pigskin scores and Derrick Henry will run all over the Texans stoppers (editor’s note: Henry has in fact not been a Titan for over a year and a half). I’m going with A.J. Brown and the over on receiving yards (Editor’s note: Brown still plays for the Eagles). The over feels like a good bet der too.

We want to thank Cornelius for taking the time to answer our questions. Unfortunately, the URL for Possum Holler Tribune is down at the moment. I’m not sure who the webmaster is, but I’m sure he is doing yeoman work keeping that site going. We want to wish Cornelius and the Titans the best of luck for the remainder of the season. As per usual, we hope that luck begins on Monday morning.

Houston Texans vs. Tennessee Titans: Injury Report

imagn-27426204.jpg

The Houston Texans are coming off a thrilling home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and are looking to carry that momentum into another divisional matchup — this time against the Tennessee Titans.

Quarterback Davis Mills got the start last weekend after C.J. Stroud suffered a concussion against the Broncos. Outside of the opening drive, Mills looked sharp and fully in control of the offense.

He’s now in line for at least one more start, with Stroud still dealing with concussion symptoms. Houston was extremely banged up last week, and it looks like that trend may continue heading into the Titans game:

Did Not Participate

-QB C.J. Stroud (Concussion)

-DB Jalen Pitre (Concussion)

-K Ka’imi Fairbairn (Quad)

-TE Dalton Schultz (Shoulder)

-TE Harrison Bryant (Shoulder)

Limited Participation

-LB Jake Hansen (Elbow)

-G Ed Ingram (Knee)

-TE Cade Stover (Foot)

-DE Denico Autry (Knee)

Full Participation

-LB Azeez Al-Shaair (Knee)

-QB Davis Mills (Elbow)

-WR Braxton Berrios (Quad)

-FB Jakob Johnson (Hamstring)

-LB Christian Harris (Shin)

-OT Tytus Howard (Concussion)

The good news for Houston is they’ll be getting multiple starters back, including tight end Cade Stover, offensive tackle Tytus Howard, and guard Ed Ingram.

The bad news is they’ll also be without several key players: quarterback C.J. Stroud, defensive back Jalen Pitre, and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn.

With the playoff race tightening, almost every game from here on out is a must-win for Houston. They can’t afford to take their foot off the gas against the Titans — even if Tennessee currently holds the league’s worst record.

Saturday Musings: Is it better for David Mills to start this Sunday over CJ Stroud for the Houston Texans?

gettyimages-1904752380.jpg

Right now, the Texans’ season sits on a knife’s edge. At 4-5, they sit on the outside looking in for the playoffs. Victories need to get banked, the more the merrier. Yet, Houston faces one of the roughest schedules in the league to close out the year. Over their last 8 games, they have to face the Colts (twice), the Bills (at home), the Chiefs (on the road) and the Chargers (on the road). They do get the Raiders (home), Cardinals (home) and the Titans (away), which is their next game. To say that the Titans game is a must-win is cliche, but logical. The Titans sit in the pole position for the #1 pick in the 2026 Draft. They’ve fired their head coach and the offense under #1 pick Cam Ward is beyond wretched.

For Houston, this would seem to be a “get-right” game. However, they will travel to Nashville with several concerns. Foremost among them: Injuries to the starting QB position. With Houston in desperation mode, they would want any and all available weapons ready to get this one. However, CJ Stroud is out for a second straight game after a concussion against Denver. In his place, Davis Mills, he of the insane 4th quarter comeback against Jacksonville last week. One would think that the momentum from that 4th quarter against the Jags should carry over, but how often have we said that about a QB, and Mills in particular, only to see that amount to nothing? For all of the Titans’ woes, they do possess a defense that can and has given Houston’s inconsistent offense trouble.

Yet is the worst thing in the world for Stroud to miss this game and let Mills lead the squad? Mills, while not the most successful of QBs, does have a record of success against the Titans, and in Nashville in particular. He won his start there in 2022 and guided Houston to a win in 2024 playing all but one series of the game. Perhaps the momentum from last week’s 4th quarter might just carry over, and if Houston can get off to a good enough start, that might be enough against a depleted Titans’ offense. Also, while they are facing significant attrition in the secondary, the powerful Texans’ defense has yet to surrender a point to the Titans this season. Likely that streak ends in Nashville but given the trouble that Houston’s defense presents to any offense this season, they may not surrender all that many. (Special teams and offensive turnovers…well, that might be another matter).

Also, the schedule plays a significant factor here. The Texans get their designated Thursday Night game this coming week, so it will be a short turnaround from going to Nashville to facing the Buffalo Bills at home. If there is a game you would want a healthy Stroud, it is that Buffalo game. Besides, when he last suffered a concussion in his rookie season, Stroud missed two games, but returned with a vengeance, leading Houston to two wins to secure the AFC South. Against a Buffalo squad with a suspect defense, a healthy Stroud would be a major plus.

It is a gamble for the Texans to let General Mills lead the charge in Nashville. There are no certainties in the NFL, and in 2025 in particular, whatever is expected usually doesn’t end up that way. A loss against the Titans would drop Houston to 4-6 and effectively leave the Texans in win-out mode and hope for a lot of help. However, to rush Stroud back only to see him get injured again, this time for a longer spell, would be a far worse fate for the Texans. Maybe it isn’t the worst of all worlds to leave it to Mills and that defense to deal with the Titans, saving Stroud for the Bills (pending that Stroud can clear the protocol by early this coming week).
