Former Steelers RB Najee Harris: Offense didn’t have identity in Pittsburgh

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore Ravens

The former Steeler says the offense never found an identity

The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked many fans last summer when they declined to pick up the fifth-year option of running back Najee Harris. After what was three straight 1,000-yard seasons at the time, it felt easy to pen in that he would be with the Steelers through 2026. Instead, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers at the beginning of free agency and has taken a few subtle jabs at the Steelers.

During his introductory press conference, Harris noted how blown away he was by the Chargers’ facility and that not everyone in the league has a place like the Chargers do. Considering Harris has only played for the Steelers, it wasn’t hard to connect the dots to what he was saying - the Steelers’ facilities aren’t great. Now, Harris says the Steelers lacked any sort of identity on offense.

“While I was elevating, I feel like time just ran out,” Harris said to CBS Los Angeles. “[We were] a team where we lost Ben [Roethlisberger], we lost a lot of O-line. We just didn’t know anything on offense. We didn’t have an identity. We had a young guy come in at quarterback. I was young. The team was young. I really didn’t have [anybody] to learn from on the offensive side.”

While the comments may come off as harsh, they also aren’t unfair, either. Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the overwhelming opinion from fans is that the Steelers offense has been poor and that they lacked any sort of true identity.

The Steelers are set to travel to SoFi Stadium to play the Chargers in 2025.

Friday Night Happy Hour: Quarterback Blues

Cincinnati Bengals v Pittsburgh Steelers

Another day, another dollar. Come through and take a load off.

Welcome back to BTSC’s Friday night open thread:

  1. The new league year has been underway for nine days, and the Steelers find themselves in one of the worst quarterback situations in the league. We’re taking a quarterback focus this week. First up, begrudgingly, what are your thoughts on Aaron Rodgers? He finally met with Steelers staff at the team’s facility on Friday, but left without a contract. Do you think there is anything left in the tank for Rodgers? And is he even worth it with all the baggage he brings with him?
  2. What would your reaction be if the Steelers went with Mason Rudolph for the majority of the season?
  3. Let’s take Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders off the table. Is there another rookie QB you’d like the Steelers to draft next month? If so, who? And would you be OK with the Steelers taking one in the first, or would you prefer taking a flier on QB later in the draft?
  4. If you’re in the “Draft a QB in 2026” camp, who is your favorite prospect not named Manning?
  5. Song of the Week: “Me More Cowboy Than You” — The Brudi Brothers

Saturday Night Open Thread Offseason Week 6: Sheetz of Integrity

Come and join this merry band of Steelers’ faithful for some lively debate about our Steelers, good food, music, and the merits of the odd cold beverage.

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

The Steelers off-season madness continues, hopefully not Marching to an “off” season. Rodgers has not signed after a 6 hour tour of Pittsburgh’s facilities. As of now, looks like tough sledding with Rudolph leading the way in 2025. Keep the faith, cause what else can we do as the Steelers Faithful?

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going is below, also let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

  1. What is your favorite steeler jersey to wear and why?
  2. What Steeler player’s jersey do you wished you had gotten signed by the player?
  3. Cincy managed to pay both of their WRs big contract money. Assume DK Metcalf puts up respectable WR1 numbers and George Pickens puts up T-Higgins 2024 numbers : 12 games played, 73 receptions on 109 targets, 911yards, 10 TDs. What do you do with George Pickens after 2025: tag him, sign him, or let him walk?

4. Jameis Winston is reportedly signing with Giants for 2 years $8million. Which team should “eat a W” for their QB value in 2025: Steelers&Mason or Giants&Jameis?

5. George Foreman, grill master extraordinaire, passed away. He also boxed, apparently, as a younger man. Who and what is your favorite celebrity + product endorsement pairing?

6. March madness is a time to fill out a bracket sheet (of integrity) and watch as your carefully (or in my case completely uninformed) picks flame out spectacularly. Have you ever stood up for a your values or choices despite others being completely against it? Tell us how it worked out for you.

BONUS: What is your favorite gas station / convenience store purchase? Do you have any random nicknack that has stood the test of time or tell us your go-to snack?

Florio: ‘Safe bet’ Aaron Rodgers signs with Steelers

New York Jets v Buffalo Bills

It appears all but certain Rodgers will be a Steeler according to Mike Florio

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be inching closer to signing the final piece of their 2025 quarterback room and finding their starter for the season. Aaron Rodgers visited the Steelers’ facility on the South Side late last week, which seemed to indicate the next step forward in getting a potential deal done. And according to Mike Florio, a deal for Rodgers and the Steelers is a “safe bet.”

“As one source in the general vicinity of those who would be in position to know said Sunday, it’s a ‘safe bet’ that quarterback Aaron Rodgers eventually will sign with the Steelers,” Florio writes.

Rodgers spent more than six hours at the facility during his visit where he reportedly met with general manager Omar Khan, head coach Mike Tomlin, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smtih. Should he decide to sign with Pittsburgh, Rodgers would round out a quarterback room that also features Mason Rudolph in his second stint with the Steelers and former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson.

While the New York Jets had a rough 5-12 campaign in 2024, Rodgers had a very solid personal season, tallying 28 touchdown passes to just 11 interceptions. While those numbers may not be four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers numbers, he is still in the upper half of starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Will he be good enough to help the Steelers end the eight-year playoff drought? Time will tell should he decide to don the black and gold.

Steelers claim former Patriots OL from waivers

Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots center Lecitus Smith (68) warms up before a game against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium.

The Steelers add some offensive line depth.

The Steelers’ 2025 offseason has been remarkably quiet when it comes to moves addressing the offensive line. However, Pittsburgh has finally added a depth piece, with NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reporting that the team has claimed offensive guard Lecitus Smith off of waivers from the New England Patriots.

Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, selected by the Arizona Cardinals. Since then, he’s bounced around the league, logging stints with the Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and most recently, the Patriots.

The 6’3, 314-pound lineman has appeared in 18 career NFL games (214 offensive snaps), starting three. He’s 26 years old.

In college, Smith largely played at left guard but did start one game at left tackle. In the NFL, he’s been listed at both center and guard. He now joins his former Patriots teammate, Daniel Ekuale, as part of the Steelers’ 2025 free agent class.

NFL Draft Profile 2025: Bhayshul Tuten (Running back, Virginia Tech)

NCAA Football: Virginia Tech at Duke

Jaylynn Nash-Imagn Images

The Steelers are missing a critical element on offense

Approaching the 2025 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll break down the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

Our Steelers NFL draft player profiles continue with a “get your popcorn ready” prospect in Virginia Tech’s speed demon Bhayshul Tuten. He reportedly has already had a pre-draft top 30 visit with the black and gold - and he’s a big-time player crush of mine.

The basics on Bhayshul Tuten

  • Position: Running back
  • Class: Senior
  • Size: 5’9, 210 pounds
  • Age: 22
  • Projected draft round: 3-4

Stats via Sports Reference

Bhayshul Tuten scouting report

The dynamic back started his college career at North Carolina AT&T after he was a one-star recruit out of high school. He was a bit banged up this past season, which is why he didn’t get the attention he deserved, but that’s changed quickly.

Tuten crushed the combine, running the fastest time for a running back with a 4.32 forty-yard dash, and a 1.49 10-yard split. His NFL draft stock inevitably jumped after that performance, and he likely has put himself somewhere in that 5-10 range of ball carriers selected.

The speedster recorded six games of over 100 yards this past season and set a school record with 266 yards in a win over Boston College. Quite often we see players like him as one-trick ponies, but that’s not the case here. While Tuten is explosive, he also isn’t exactly a twig. He’s 209 pounds, so he won’t be tackled by the wind anytime soon. He’s got some sneaky power and good contact balance.

This is the play you’ll see the most when sifting through his highlights. I watched this whole game against Miami and there wasn’t much room to run. But when there was a lane, such as this, kiss him goodbye.

Really like Bhayshul Tuten https://t.co/gCVmpa2QcK pic.twitter.com/LJEGzRaFDQ

— Matt Owen (@ProfessorO_NFL) March 14, 2025

He best fits in a wide-zone scheme due to his one one-cut and go ability. He’s not exactly the power plunger Steelers OC Arthur Smith generally covets. I really appreciate his vision, there wasn’t much dancing in the backfield on tape. You can see how he absorbs contact as he finishes this long run.

Bhayshul Tuten's 4.32 speed certainly shows up on tape. Gets downhill so fast. pic.twitter.com/Ecp7Emr7z2

— Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23) March 7, 2025

Anyone can throw a highlight out there of a play like this, but when I watched his reps, he was average at best at picking up the blitz. As mentioned in this post, teams will appreciate his “want to.” But I think he’s going to be limited in pass-pro, which will also limit his three-down ability.

Bhayshul Tuten with the biltz pick-up

Tuten has a compact build at 5'9" and 206 pounds and really seems to like contact pic.twitter.com/vyq2oPjEjP

— Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23) March 7, 2025

A few notes on Tuten - and take them for what you will. He never took a carry from under center. Not one. Obviously, this is a product of Virginia Tech’s shotgun-heavy offense, which is now making its way to the NFL more than ever before. But it’s definitely concerning. Especially when factoring in his ball protection. Tuten has nine fumbles over the past two seasons.

He also wasn’t featured much of a pass-catcher. He only had 23 receptions for 81 yards last season. That’s a bit strange for someone with that type of game-breaking ability.

I’ve heard comps to Miami Dolphins RB Devon Achane due to his blazing speed, but he reminds me more of Raiders (and former Dolphins) RB Raheem Mostert. Mostert wasn’t asked to be a receiver, but he has always been dangerous with the ball in his hands.

Strengths

  • Elite speed and wiggle
  • Above-average vision and decisive hitting the hole
  • Plays with a chip on his shoulder due to not being heavily recruited

Weaknesses

  • Pass-protection
  • Wasn’t utilized much in the passing game
  • Big time fumbling issues

What others are saying about Bhayshul Tuten

Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

If you spend too much time focusing on the small inconsistencies of Tuten’s college game, you run the risk of overlooking the match he is for the pro game. He’s an explosive athlete with average size but a compact frame. He has elite straight-line speed and easy hips to make sudden cuts and turns. He’s fairly average at reading the front and running with early decisiveness, but creates with wiggle, power, and speed. Drops and fumbles are a concern, but runners with his contact balance, power, and home run speed put tremendous stress on defenses over four quarters. Tuten could become a starting-caliber back with three-down value.

Ryan Fowler, The Draft Network

Overall, Tuten is a highly productive ball-carrier in the ACC but has limitations in his game that remain evident. While his short, stocky build blends well with his short-area quickness and toughness, his limited twitch and lack of creativity near the line of scrimmage could limit his impact at the NFL level. He projects as more of a seam runner than an athlete who can create his own lanes if needed at this point in time. His acceleration and contact balance do stand out, however, and teams that rely heavily on outside zone will prioritize Tuten’s ability to stretch and attack.

Bhayshul Tuten’s fit with the Steelers

Tuten probably isn’t a three-down back at the next level, but he’s a perfect fit with the Steelers as they are currently constructed. When was the last time they had a player who could take a handoff 80 yards to the house? Willie Parker?

Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell aren’t road graders, but they don’t have that breakaway, energizer bunny ability.

He’s a weapon, he won’t cost a high draft pick (third or fourth), and he can be used in the backfield, on jet sweeps, and on special teams as a return specialist.

I’d love to see him in black and gold.

What are your thoughts on Virginia Tech RB Bhayshul Tuten? And which draft prospects would you like to see profiled next? Let us know in the comments below!

Giants sign former Steelers QB Russell Wilson

Another option off the board for Pittsburgh…

Another option at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers is officially off the board, as 2024 starter Russell Wilson has officially signed a one-year contract with the New York Giants worth up to $21 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The deal includes $10.5 million guaranteed.

The G Men signed veteran Jameis Winston to a two-year deal worth $8 million earlier this week as a presumed backup and also hold the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft — presumably in play for the consideration of Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, who is widely considered QB2 in this class behind Miami QB Cam Ward.

This move means two things for the Steelers at this point, the first of which, obviously, is that Wilson’s brief tenure in black and gold has officially reached its end. The former Super Bowl champion went 6-6 as a starter with the Steelers, including the postseason, having missed time with a calf injury through training camp and the first six weeks of the season.

The other consideration to make is what this move means for the Steelers at quarterback, as Wilson was reportedly still in play as a potential re-signing, pending the outcome of other options on the board. Pittsburgh continues to wait for an update on the status of veteran QB Aaron Rodgers, who is contemplating his options after hitting free agency for the first time in his career this offseason following his release by the New York Jets.

Rodgers met with the Steelers last week, including visits with HC Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan, though he did not reach a deal before leaving the facility. Now, with Wilson off the board, it seems as likely as ever that Rodgers lands with Pittsburgh. Rodgers went 5-12 with the Jets in 2024, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 TD and 11 INT.

After this point, it’s fairly unsurprising that Wilson elected to sign elsewhere, as it seemed that his relationship with the Steelers did, in fact, sour at some point. Bob Labriola of Steelers.com speculated that the relationship between Wilson and Pittsburgh appeared beyond repair — unsurprising, considering previous reports (and subsequent denials) that there were issues between Wilson and current OC Arthur Smith.

If things with Rodgers also fall through, the Steelers would likely be looking at former third-round pick (and 2023 end-of-season hero) Mason Rudolph as the presumed starter, barring a surprising trade for another veteran.

Report: Steelers met with Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka Tuesday

2025 CFP National Championship Presented by AT&T- Ohio State v Notre Dame

Photo by Steve Limentani/ISI Photos/Getty Images

The Steelers may have their eye on selecting Egbuka in the first round

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally made their big splash at wide receiver this offseason, trading for DK Metcalf and immediately signing him to a four-year, $132 million extension, taking his total remaining contract up to five years worth $150 million. The Steelers may not be done adding big-name receivers to their roster.

According to Tony Pauline, the Steelers' “decision-makers” met with Ohio State Emeka Egbuka on Tuesday ahead of the Buckeyes’ pro day on Wednesday.

Emeka Egbuka/WR/@OhioStateFB having a terrific pro day. Met with the @steelers decision makers on Tuesday.

— Tony Pauline (@TonyPauline) March 26, 2025

Should the Steelers be interested in taking Egbuka in the first round, that could lead to theories of George Pickens being traded being confirmed. It’s not likely that the Steelers would pay Pickens on top of paying Metcalf. Plus, he and Metcalf largely do the same things. Moving him to a team in need of a wide receiver for draft compensation would make sense.

Egbuka had a terrific season with the Buckeyes, catching 81 passes for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. Adding him to be the route technician at the X while Metcalf takes the top off the defense as the Z would give the Steelers a more balanced passing game.

Steelers DT Cam Heyward: It would be cool for Aaron Rodgers to join Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers v Philadelphia Eagles

The captain felt his words were misconstrued

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ search for a quarterback just got a whole lot clearer. With Russell Wilson signing with the New York Giants, the Steelers have one candidate left to be their starter for 2025 - Aaron Rodgers.

The Super Bowl champion quarterback visited the Steelers’ facility last week, reportedly meeting with general manager Omar Khan, head coach Mike Tomlin, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Considering his only other feasible team just signed Wilson, the Steelers look like his only option.

Cam Heyward made headlines when he discussed the possibility of signing Rodgers on his podcast Not Just Football. He said he isn’t going on a darkness retreat to recruit Rodgers, and that it wasn’t any skin off his back if Rodgers didn’t become a Steeler. He joined Good Morning Football to seemingly clarify those comments.

. @Steelers DT @CamHeyward joins the show to talk Russ, Rodgers, WWE, and more ⬇️@NotJustFootball pic.twitter.com/AocY53LloP

— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) March 26, 2025

“It was misconstrued,” Heyward said. “From my point of view, I was asked a question - would you go to the lengths of going to a darkness retreat to recruit Aaron Rodgers? I said, ‘I’m not doing that.’ The pitch is if you want to be a Steeler, be a Steeler. That’s all it was. It wasn’t meant [as] I don’t like Aaron Rodgers. When I look at our team right now, it would be really cool to have a guy like Aaron Rodgers. But I can’t be the guy who gets it over the finish line. He’s gotta make those decisions for himself, but I’m excited to see what happens.”

Heyward was active in recruiting Russell Wilson last offseason, as Wilson noted in his introductory press conference that a long facetime with Heyward was one of the deciding factors that made him sign with the Steelers.

While nothing is certain, it does seem that the likeliest outcome of this saga is Rodgers signing on the dotted line with the Steelers.

NFL draft profile 2025: T.J. Sanders (Defensive tackle, South Carolina)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 10 South Carolina at Arkansas

Photo by Andy Altenburger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The heart of South Carolina’s potent defensive line, TJ Sanders would be a great fit with the Black and Gold.

TJ Sanders is a player who I think is getting lost a bit in this historic defensive tackle class. South Carolina had one of the better defensive lines in college football in 2024, and at its heart was Sanders.

In high school, Sanders was a 3-star recruit out of Marion, South Carolina, where he played defensive end and tight end for Marion High School. After red-shirting his freshman year at South Carolina, he became a rotational player in 2022 and a key starter over his final two years of school. In 39 career games, he totaled 109 combined tackles, 9.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and 6 pass deflections.

The basics on T.J. Sanders

  • Position: Defensive tackle
  • Class: Senior
  • Size: 6’4, 297 pounds (up to 305 pounds at pro day) , 33 1/8” arms, 10 1/4” hands
  • Age: Turns 22 on July 30
  • Projected draft round: Fringe 1st round, Top-50 player

T.J. Sanders scouting report

When you throw on Sanders' tape, he flashes plus as a disruptive pass rusher. He’s got strong, active hands that pack a powerful punch, and his hand usage allows him to execute effective counters. He’s shown the ability to rip and swim past blockers, but his bread and butter is currently his swipe move. On plays where Sanders doesn’t get home to the quarterback, he’s flashed other ways to make the passer uncomfortable. He can convert speed to power to collapse a pocket or slip and knife his way through gaps to get the quarterback off his platform. Sanders has a high motor, and you rarely see him taken out of the play.

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) March 26, 2025

He’s perhaps even better against the run. The same penetration skills he shows against the pass apply when the defense asks him to disrupt the run early. But Sanders also frequently shines in a two-gap role against the run, where he is able to stack a blocker and maintain gap control before shedding a blocker at the right moment to make a play.

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) March 26, 2025

Strengths

  • Quick and violent hands
  • Experience lining up in A-gap and over tackles
  • Rarely gets moved off his spot defending the run

Weaknesses

  • Limited knee bend
  • Hands are sometimes quicker than his feet
  • Needs more consistency with pad level and can play high at times

What others are saying about T.J. Sanders

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

Sanders is a powerful road block with heavy hands and a strong core. He rarely touches the ground. Despite a lack of knee bend, he usually gives better than he gets and blockers have a hard time keeping him sealed. He punches and locks out quickly with a twitchy shed to tackle a gap over. His rush features average first-step quickness, but sudden hand swipes and play-through power in his lower half open pathways to the pocket. Sanders’ blend of power and pressure should put him on the board for both odd- and even-front defenses as a potential three-down solution.

Kyle Crabbs for The 33rd Team

As is, he’s an absolute savage rushing the passer who should bolster an NFL team’s sub-package rush group from the jump. Sanders has played more than 150 snaps apiece in the A-gap and head-up over tackles, showing the ability to win from all kinds of angles thanks to his first step, lateral quickness, active hands, and ability to turn tight corners.

This is a player who has shown a variety of ways to get after the quarterback. He’s got a nifty inside scissors and swipe counter to cross face against the center when protection pushes his way, he’s capable of coiling and exploding through gaps with effective quickness, and he can, on occasion, convert speed to power and collapse a center or guard back and compress the pocket. He is slippery through contact thanks to some looseness in his shoulders and does well on twists and stunts to probe and feel creases to pop through and create discomfort for the quarterback.

Keith Sanchez of The Draft Network

Sanders can win in multiple ways on run downs. When working to sustain the line of scrimmage and play gap control, Sanders can shoot his hands to lock out offensive linemen by utilizing his upper-body strength. Using this technique, his length plays a part in how he can quickly get hands on offensive linemen and create the necessary distance by extending his arms to shed them and make a play on the ball-carrier. The other way in which Sanders can win is by using his first-step quickness and athleticism to get upfield and be disruptive. Sanders can beat offensive linemen at the snap, quickly get into the gap, and get penetration. Because of his range and change of direction, Sanders can get into the backfield and run down ball-carriers to create negative plays for offenses in the run game.

T.J. Sanders’ fit with the Steelers

Sanders is a scheme-versatile lineman who has played 150+ college snaps both lining up in the A-gap (the space between center and guard) and lining directly across from the offensive tackle. There was some concern about his weight after he weighed in at 284 pounds at the Senior Bowl, but he has gone up in weight when measured at the Combine (297 pounds) and again at his pro day (305 pounds).

Like most rookies, he has elements of his game that need refining, but he flashes enough disruption on his tape to feel confident that he will develop further at the next level. The Steelers need pass rush help and better run defense, and Sanders provides both.

Sanders currently projects to me as a Top-50 player. He might be a little rich at Pick 21, but would be an ideal target if the Steelers looked to trade back in the first to collect some more picks, or somehow reacquire a second-round pick through a different trade.

TL;DR: Sanders projects as a player who can provide rotational pass rush depth as a rookie, and the potential to develop into a plus starter. He would thrive best in a 3-tech role, but can move all along the line as the Steelers need.

NFL draft profile 2025: Ollie Gordon II (Running back, Oklahoma State)

Running back Ollie Gordon II #0 the Oklahoma State Cowboys steps past safety Colby McCalister #20 of the Kansas State Wildcats for a 15-yard gain to the 11-yard line in the fourth quarter at Boone Pickens Stadium on October 6, 2023 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State won 29-21.

Could the Steelers draft a Najee Harris-style running back in 2025?

Approaching the 2025 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll break down the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

The Steelers seem to have a type when it comes to running backs they’ve scouted or signed this offseason: Kenneth Gainwell, Jaydon Blue, Dylan Sampson, etc. The biggest outlier? Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II. How could he fit the Steelers’ plans?

The basics on Ollie Gordon II

  • Position: Running back
  • Class: Junior
  • Size: 6’1, 226 pounds
  • Age: 21
  • Projected draft round: 5

Stats via Sports Reference

Ollie Gordon II scouting report

I’ve seen a lot of — sometimes misplaced — Najee Harris comparisons made by Steelers fans in regards to some of the bigger running backs in this year’s class. One that actually makes some sense? Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II.

Gordon weighed in at the NFL Combine at 6’1, 226 pounds, awfully close to Harris’ Combine measurements of 6’1, 232. Both are upright runners who still pack a lot of power and toughness, but are noticeably lacking when it comes to burst and agility.

Gordon compares to Harris in the more minute aspects of his game, as well. For one, he brings a fairly effective hurdle to the table despite his general profile as a power back (No. 0 in all clips).

The Najee Harris comps are pretty accurate, down to the Green Goblin mask telling him to hurdle defenders pic.twitter.com/rVCAc2hQDi

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

Another Harris trait that Gordon possesses is a reliable presence as a pass-catcher. Gordon has good hands and impressed creating yards after dump-offs and screens. It’s a fun wrinkle to his game that gives him a bit more versatility than you’d expect.

I was impressed by Gordon as a pass-catcher. Reliable, soft hands and reads his blocks well in space pic.twitter.com/ZBFGwrujYk

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

There are some concerns with Gordon’s abilities as a runner, though. Going from scouting names like Dylan Sampson and D.J. Giddens to Gordon makes it clear that the Oklahoma State runner is simply operating at a slower speed compared to some of the other mid-round backs in this class.

To be clear, his vision is solid, but he lacks high-end acceleration and agility, making it hard to efficiently sift through the defense or create when plays break down. Gordon takes a while to get to full speed, and when he had to slow down at the line of scrimmage it greatly reduced his effectiveness.

Gordon has solid vision, but doesn't always have the speed or wiggle to turn those cuts into big gains pic.twitter.com/0tvkZNjJLQ

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

One important caveat is that Gordon’s 2024 involved constantly running into stacked boxes as an effect of Oklahoma State’s often cringe-inducing passing attack. He also dealt with a lower-body injury for much of the season, admirably pushing through it but clearly not playing at 100%.

Flashback to 2023, when Gordon won the Doak Walker award as college football’s top running back, and you can see him at the height of his powers. He’s not a significantly different running back, but watch this cut-up from his 271-yard game against Cincinnati that season, and you can safely assume he brings a bit more juice than the 2024 film shows.

Gordon ran a disappointing but not surprising 4.61-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He also ranked near the bottom of the pack when it came to his position groups’ 10-yard split, vertical jump, and broad jump. He’s just not going to be a big-play threat at the next level.

Still, Gordon is a long strider who can build up a solid amount of speed, especially if he’s given a clean lane by his offensive line.

Respectable build-up speed, though pic.twitter.com/qwxT8bH1J9

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

The same goes for Gordon’s power. He won’t always push the pile if he’s contacted behind the line of scrimmage, but there are plenty of grown-man runs scattered throughout his 2024. As is evident from the receiving cut-up, Gordon is a dominant runner once he gets a full head of steam.

Showcases some good power when he gets going pic.twitter.com/cQ8ygZeKDU

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

Gordon also consistently heats up in the red zone, often diving for the goal line.

He always gives 100% effort with the goal line in sight pic.twitter.com/u63PcLergZ

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

But my favorite aspect of Gordon’s game is his pass protection. It’s not always perfect as his technique can suffer when he’s hunting for a big hit, but it’s hard to see his seek-and-destroy blocking mentality as a bad thing. Between Gordon’s blocking and his pass-catching ability, I think he’ll offer a bit more than the stereotypical short-yardage running back.

Ollie Gordon II taking souls as a blocker, a compilation pic.twitter.com/qTECrDg1wB

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

Gordon’s disappointing 2024 and poor testing are going to push him down in a draft class loaded with more explosive talents. NFL teams will also be concerned with a June 2024 DUI arrest that resulted in two charged misdemeanors. Gordon later released a statement apologizing for his actions.

Overall, I have an early- to mid-Day 3 grade on Gordon, with the expectation that he could develop into a solid RB2-3 at the next level. However, the interview process is going to be an important one for the Oklahoma State star.

Strengths

  • Excellent size; strong, durable runner
  • Natural pass-catcher and above-average receiver out of the backfield
  • Violent blocker
  • Absurdly productive 2023; still averaged 4.6 YPC in a struggling offense in 2024
  • High-effort runner
  • Hard to bring down once he builds up speed

Weaknesses

  • Less than ideal long speed, agility, and acceleration
  • Linear runner; struggles to create laterally
  • Upright ball-carrier who doesn’t always fully maximize his power
  • Arrest in 2024

What others are saying about Ollie Gordon II

Kyle Crabbs of The 33rd Team

Gordon II doesn’t have the quickest or lightest feet, either — so trash through his track will bog him down and leave him at risk of having to gear all the way down in order to get himself redirected. All of this has the makings of a runner who should ideally not spend much time in the backfield pressing the line of scrimmage. He’s not a great fit for the outside zone-heavy schemes due to his limited ability to plant and drive to attack gaps. The vertical run game is where he’s most likely to apply some of his dominant open-air abilities.

PFF

At over 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Gordon has an enticing frame. He possesses nimble feet, allowing him to maneuver behind man- and gap-blocking schemes. In 2023, he displayed strong balance, brushing off arm tackles and keeping runs alive. However, his 2024 season was a step back. His game lacked the physicality expected of a big back, and his patience often crossed into hesitation. Flexibility and agility have never been his calling cards. He also has minimal experience as a receiver. In pass protection, his size gives him the potential to be an asset, but much of his blocking effectiveness comes from chop blocks rather than proper technique.

Christopher Hart of Mile High Report

Teams and scouts will have some vetting to do with some of the concerns ... However, they will undoubtedly be enamored by his prolific performance two years ago. Gordon profiles as a thunder back at the next level who would likely be utilized best in a tandem with a lightning caliber player. He doesn’t have elite speed, but once he gets going, he is a freight train capable of bulldozing defenders that is hard to bring down. While he isn’t an elite weapon out of the backfield as a receiver, he does show some potential and promise. In order to be a true three-down back in the National Football League, he will have to improve upon the former and also show he can be more capable in pass protection.

Ollie Gordon II’s fit with the Steelers

The Steelers’ top-30 visit with Gordon is a perplexing one. He fits the draft range Pittsburgh seems to be targeting at running back, but he’s a vastly different type of player compared to the speedsters (Bhayshul Tuten, Jaydon Blue, etc.) the team has been focusing on. One theory that comes to mind is that Gordon’s 2024 arrest will make teams more likely to bring him in for an interview.

But how does Gordon fit the Steelers if he does end up on the team? My draft profile might read a bit negative compared to the others I’ve found online, but don’t get me wrong — on a strong power-running team that can consistently give Gordon a runway to wreak havoc on the second level of the defense, I think he could be a really good addition to an NFL backfield. The problem, of course, is that the Steelers are a zone-heavy team under Arthur Smith with inconsistent blocking up front.

However, let’s end with a quick thought experiment: Would Najee Harris have been more well-liked if he was drafted on Day 3? I think that’s a pretty obvious yes. In the scenario that Gordon falls in the draft and the Steelers end up waiting to select a running back, adding a big, reliable bruiser to fill out the depth chart makes a modicum of sense. However, if the Steelers do indeed target a bigger back in the draft, I think there are far more zone-friendly options available.

TL;DR: Gordon is a large, build-up power runner who will be best utilized in a gap scheme at the NFL level. Athletic limitations dampen what he’ll be able to do in the wrong scheme or behind a bad offensive line, but various tools (hurdles, pass protection, receiving ability) give him increased dimensionality.

Report: Steelers hosting QB Jaxson Dart on Top 30 visit

Duke v Ole Miss - TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

The Steelers continue to show interest in Dart

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue their quarterback search, though it looks like it will end with Aaron Rodgers signing a one-year deal to join the Black and Gold. However, the Steelers could also take a quarterback at some point in the NFL Draft, and they continue to show interest in a select group of signal-callers.

According to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers are hosting Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart to a top 30 visit in April. Ole Miss also has their Pro Day set for Friday, so don’t be surprised if the Steelers have representation on hand to watch him throw.

In terms of what they’ll do, that’s obviously going to be found out in less than a month’s time at the 2025 NFL Draft. I gave my thoughts on the Steelers’ plan at quarterback earlier on the site, and it doesn’t include drafting one in the first round this year.

Nothing the Steelers have done this offseason would signal that they are taking a quarterback with a premium pick. They will very likely take one late Day Two or on Day Three, but their plan for a quarterback seems very obvious. With the four compensatory picks they are slated to receive, they’ll have 11 draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is in Pittsburgh. They’ll trade up in next year’s quarterback-heavy class and draft their guy in their own city. Remember, they were reportedly very interested in Malik Willis in 2022, as well. Doing their due diligence doesn’t mean that Dart will be the pick at No. 21.

Steelers just showed they aren’t drafting Jaxson Dart

Duke v Ole Miss - TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

The Steelers’ actions showed they aren’t selecting Dart

A bit of a fuss was made early Friday morning when it was reported by Mike DeFabo of The Athletic that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be hosting Jaxon Dart to a pre-draft visit in April. This, coming on the day of the Ole Miss pro day, had people speculating that perhaps the Rebels signal-caller would be the surprising pick for Pittsburgh at No. 21 in the first round. However, the Steelers told us with their actions on Friday that Dart won’t be the pick.

As Derrick Bell of Steelers Now pointed out, neither head coach Mike Tomlin nor general manager Omar Khan were in attendance for Ole Miss’ pro day, only assistant GM Andy Weidl was there in terms of higher-ups for the Steelers. If the two decision-makers for Pittsburgh won’t even bother to show up to watch Dart throw, they aren’t taking him.

No Mike Tomlin or Omar Khan at the Ole Miss Pro Day?#GodIsGood pic.twitter.com/UoNNHraUon

— Derrick (@Steelers_DB) March 28, 2025

As Bell pointed out in the comments of his post, while Tomlin and Khan weren’t at Washington’s pro day last year and took Troy Fautanu, there is a large difference between a tackle and the face of your franchise. Plus, there isn’t much you’ll learn about a tackle at a pro day in terms of on-field ability.

On the flip side, they did attend Alabama’s pro day and got an up-close and personal look at Jalen Milroe. It’s far more likely the Steelers will take Milroe in the third round and address the defensive line needs or perhaps triple down at wide receiver in the first round than take a quarterback whose pro day they didn’t care about enough to attend.

To connect this to the theory I’ve discussed throughout the day, the Steelers’ plan seems to be to trade up in the 2026 draft to get their next starting quarterback. Should they take Milroe in this year’s draft, then they’ll have two young guys on the roster who will push each other, and a potential option to turn to in Milroe if the 2026 guy doesn’t work out.

NFL draft profile 2025: Yahya Black (Defensive line, Iowa)

Iowa Hawkeyes Defensive Lineman Yahya Black (94) looks on during the Big Ten Championship Game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Iowa Hawkeyes on December 2, 2023, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Breaking down one of the 2025 NFL Draft’s most underrated defensive linemen.

If the Steelers decide to draft a defensive lineman on Day 3, Iowa’s Yahya Black is a sleeper worth keeping an eye on.

The basics on Yahya Black

  • Position: Defensive line
  • Class: Fifth-year senior
  • Size: 6’6, 336 pounds
  • Age: 22
  • Projected draft round: 6

Stats via Sports Reference

Yahya Black scouting report

It’s a very deep draft class at defensive line this year, and understandably, the headline-grabbers are going to be the many athletic freaks and do-it-all talents expected to go in the early rounds. However, don’t lose sight of the more limited but effective role players slipping under the radar.

One of those names is Iowa’s Yahya Black.

Black won’t wow with his athleticism. His RAS score is just 3.57, and he noticeably lacks burst on tape. But he has size — and more importantly, length — that you simply can’t teach. Black stands at 6’6, 336 pounds, with 35-inch arms. In the words of SB Nation’s own JP Acosta, “Dude could probably scratch his knee standing straight up.”

Black’s wingspan is one of the biggest strengths of his game. It gives him a wide radius to shut down running plays. There are plenty of reps where Black doesn’t necessarily get the solo tackle, but he has an arm somewhere in the scrum disrupting the running back’s progress (No. 94 in all clips).

Very long arms means he has a big radius to affect plays pic.twitter.com/T59PZ13KMf

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

He also shows promise when it comes to making plays on the ball, with 11 career passes defensed and a blocked field goal in 2024:

Long arms also helps deflect passes at the LOS, and Black blocked a field goal last year pic.twitter.com/vP2wGbK3jL

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

Black will be exclusively a running-down defender in the NFL, but he’s elite in that role when going up against one-on-ones. He has excellent size and length, as well as the power to quickly disengage blocks. He’s a prototypical two-gapper.

Iowa DT Yahya Black (No. 94): Very good run stuffer. Maybe a bit underrated. pic.twitter.com/pSDrP0VatG

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 25, 2025

His effort is another standout trait. Black has athletic limitations, lacking ideal explosiveness and agility, but his motor always runs hot.

Impressive effort – Black was always involved in gang tackles and crashing down on the runner. pic.twitter.com/PQuUXsmFQe

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

His football IQ also stands out. Black consistently had strong gap discipline, and I also clipped a couple of examples of his strong situational awareness below:

Disciplined defender with some nice awareness highlights I found: preventing the cutback in clip 1 and forcing the high throw on the screen in clip 2 pic.twitter.com/VpZHx6Mi3E

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

At 6’6, Black doesn’t always have the greatest leverage and could still improve his anchor heading into the NFL. He ended up on the ground a bit more than you’d like in 2024.

As a pass-rusher, he doesn't push the pocket much despite his size, and there’s a lack of urgency in his footwork and hand usage. He was largely used as a gap-stuffer at Iowa so you can’t hold his usage against him, but Black’s lack of a pass-rush skill set and low athletic ceiling is why his draft projection is in the low Day 3 range.

However, I think with stronger leg drive and some good coaching, Black could possibly unlock a useful bull rush at the next level. He had a good pass-rushing rep once or twice a game, hinting at a bit of upside:

Not a plus pass-rusher but a few good reps a game. pic.twitter.com/h7Jpyjtgei

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) March 26, 2025

For now, Black projects as a late-round run-stuffer who should be able to provide an immediate impact as a role player in the NFL. Yes, he’s very one-dimensional, but he offers a polished game with elite size against the run that shouldn’t go unnoticed. Black might never be a star at the NFL level, but I think he’ll offer good value to the team that drafts him.

Strengths

  • Ideal build, length for an A-gap defender
  • Dominant run defender in one-on-ones; power and wingspan to effectively two-gap
  • High effort defender

Weaknesses

  • Needs to work on anchor against double teams and improve leg drive
  • Currently offers little as a pass-rusher
  • Limited athlete

What others are saying about Yahya Black

Matt Wilson of Dawgs by Nature

Iowa’s Yahya Black is such an underrated player in this year’s defensive tackle class. He’s obviously not the best athlete but at 6’6”, 336 Lbs. with 35” arms and a 7-foot wingspan, nobody should expect him to be. Black’s powerful punch/extension made it almost impossible for teams to block him 1-on-1 at the collegiate level. Somebody’s going to find a solid, rotational 1-tech in the 6th round.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

A massive nose tackle with high-end traits, Black’s run plugging can run hot and cold as he fails to anchor with flat feet sunk deep into the ground when attacked on an angle. He can separate and neutralize the block to messy the gap when his pad level is right and he’s one-on-one. Black lacks snap quickness and range, so he’s much more space-eater than playmaker. The size and traits will be coveted, but Black lacks rush and is a little inconsistent at controlling the point. He might have a ceiling as a rotational big man.

Nick Falato of New York Giants SI

Yahya Black is an excellent – fundamentally sound – run defender who executed his assignments well within Iowa’s defensive structure. His good physicality and length allowed him to lock blockers out and anchor well at the point of attack; he possesses crafty hands to quickly separate while doing an adequate job locating the ball carrier near his gap responsibility. His size and run-defending prowess allow him to operate as a 1T in an EVEN front or an ODD front 4i-T. Overall, Black will quickly earn snaps on early downs and make impact plays as a smart run defender who eats space and dictates at the line of scrimmage.

Yahya Black’s fit with the Steelers

The Steelers look to be gunning for a defensive lineman early in the draft, and Black doesn’t fit that description. However, the Pittsburgh front office and ownership didn’t seem all too pleased with how the team’s expensive defense was slashed by the Ravens’ running game in the playoffs, and adding some gap-stuffing talent to the interior this offseason is likely a priority. If the Steelers double up on the D-line in the draft, Black could be a great late-round swing who could see limited playing time early on.

Of course, the Steelers have already signed bottom-of-the-depth-chart defensive linemen Isaiahh Loudermilk, Daniel Ekuale, and Esezi Otomewo in free agency, but I think a run-down specialist like Black would still be a good addition to the training camp competition. The Steelers brought Black in for a top-30 visit, so they seem intrigued by the fit as well.

TL;DR: Black is a technically sound, mountainous run-stuffing defensive lineman. His limitations as an athlete and pass-rusher mean he won’t be an every-down contributor, but Black should be able to play early on as a space-eater against the run.

Saturday Night Open Thread Offseason Week 7: Trai mix

NFL: Preseason-Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills

Aug. 25, 2012; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Trai Essex (79) against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images | Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images

Another week passes, but it’s mostly a non-event. March Madness (or mid-ness if you prefer upsets), is on going, just like the QB limbo situation. Feels like nothing will be resolved for weeks, so enjoy the nicer weather (assuming it is getting nicer where you are)

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going is below, also let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

  1. Former Steeler Trai Essex is in the news telling Broderick Jones he could be on the outside if he doesn’t transition well to left tackle this year. Tell me what the odds are that BJ balls out this year at LT? (Example: 10to 1, 50/50, etc)
  2. What is the better Mike Tomlin-ism
    A) The standard is the standard.
    B) …and things of that nature.
    C) I want volunteers not hostages.
    D) We will unleash hell here in December.
    E) other: provide in comments.

3. Green Bay has proposed eliminating the tush-push by banning the offense from pushing teammates. Do you support eliminating it or would you rather keep this play?

4. It’s Women’s History Month and The Steelers are hosting a Girls Flag football league today(highschool and college ages). Given that it’s flag football but there are still injury risks, would you advise your daughter/sister/niece/ female friend/etc play flag football?

5. Spring is here, and it’s yard sale season. Do you have a lot of stuff you need to sell? If so what is it?

6. Going through a kitchen renovation, so we are without an oven, sink, dishwasher etc for a few months. We are making do with hot plates and microwave. What’s your favorite creative recipe for a microwave/ toaster /odd appliance etc? (Example : coffee mug cake)
