Aaron Rodgers, Steelers offense have worst game of season in loss to Chargers

gettyimages-2245922227.jpg

Andrus Peat was called for a false start on the first play of the game – that set the tone for the evening that ended in the Pittsburgh Steelers losing 25-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Steelers didn’t just lose to the Los Angeles Chargers; they played as badly offensively as they possibly could have. They finished the game with just 221 yards of total offense, 65 of which came on their final drive when the result was already in hand for the Chargers. Before that final drive, the only points they had came on a 59-yard field goal – it was utter domination on the front of the Chargers’ defense, and by far the worst game from Aaron Rodgers in a Steelers uniform.

Rodgers finished the game going 16-of-31 for 161 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was noticeable off all night, air mailing several passes, not looking comfortable in the pocket, and making uncharacteristically bad decisions with the ball. Rodgers took a safety on the Steelers’ third drive. When watching the play back, Pat Freiermuth is open on the shallow dig. Jonnu Smith had a chance to move the chains and get big yards that would have set the Steelers up deep in the red zone, but Rodgers overshot him, which led to a contested catch attempt that was ruled incomplete. On the second drive that resulted in a field goal, DK Metcalf got behind the defense, but Rodgers led him too far, and it fell incomplete. If there is one player the Steelers can’t afford to play poorly, it’s Rodgers, and he was bad all night. Per RBSDM Stats, Rodgers finished the game with an EPA per play of -0.50. To say he was off would be an understatement, and it affected everything the Steeles wanted to do on offense all night.

Additionally, the Steelers were abysmal on third down – a trend that continues to haunt them. They entered the week ranking 26th in third-down offense, and they rank 31st over the last three games – they were 2-of-11 on third down Sunday night. The issues on third down continue to kill drives, and if they can’t fix them, it will cost them more games and the division. That’s not to say they need to become a top-five unit on third down, but they need to get to at least league-average, especially when facing the top teams in the league.

Defensively, there was a lot to like. Pittsburgh held Justin Herbert to a negative EPA per play, and the Chargers only averaged 4.6 yards per play. The pass rush consistently got pressure on Herbert and sacked him five times. They held Los Angeles to going 6-of-17 on third down, and the Chargers had twice the number of penalties. The same way that the losses to the Bengals and Packers fell strictly on the shoulders of the defense, this loss falls strictly on the shoulders of the offense’s inability to move the ball through the air, and the failure to put the ball in the end zone when gifted with great field position multiple times.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that it would be difficult for Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense to play that poorly again, and that they’ll have a much easier challenge in Week 11 against a poor Bengals defense.

Varsity & JV: Winners and losers from Steelers Week 10 loss to Chargers

gettyimages-2245912726.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost their third game in four weeks with a 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, sending them to 5-4 on the season. The offense had by far its worst performance of the season, while the defense did all it could to limit the Chargers. Here is this week’s Varsity and JV performers.

Varsity

EDGE Nick Herbig

Herbig is currently the Steelers’ best edge rusher. He had a sack and two tackles for loss, which brings his season total to 5.5 sacks and eight TFLs. For comparison, he had 5.5 sacks all of last season and five TFLs, as well. He has taken such a big leap forward and continues to be one of the brightest stars on Pittsburgh’s defense.

DT Keeanu Benton

Benton continues to get better. He had a sack and two tackles for loss and totaled seven tackles on the night, consistently disrupting plays from the interior.

EDGE T.J. Watt

Watt added a sack to his season total, which gives him six on the season. He also had a batted pass at the line of scrimmage and three hits on Justin Herbert.

EDGE Alex Highsmith

Highsmith has stacked two great performances, as he now has consecutive games with two sacks. He also had two tackles for loss and three hits on Justin Herbert.

K Chris Boswell

Despite the rare miss, Boswell hit a 59-yard field goal, which was the Steelers’ only real points of the game before Roman Wilson scored in garbage time.

RB Jaylen Warren

Warren averaged five yards per carry and was consistently explosive with the ball in his hands. He leaped over a defender for the offensive highlight of the night, and it was frustrating to see the Steelers not lean into the run game when it was working all night.

CB James Pierre

Pierre came in after Darius Slay left the game due to a head injury, and he played well, holding his own with strong coverage and notching two passes defended to prevent completions.

Junior-Varsity

QB Aaron Rodgers

Not only was this Aaron Rodgers’ worst game as a Steeler, but you could make the case that it was the worst game of his career. He airmailed multiple passes, most notably a touchdown that was overthrown to DK Metcalf and a big gain inside the red zone that was too tall for Jonnu Smith to bring in. He also threw two interceptions (one of which did hit Calvin Austin directly in the hands). In totality, Rodgers was 16-of-31 for 161 yards with a QBR of 4.6.

Pass Protection

Rodgers was pressured eight times and on just over 23 percent of dropbacks, per Next Gen Stats. While he was bad, so, too, was his protection.

Passing Game

Just everything with the passing game was brutal. Rodgers was hesitant to pull the trigger in some instances. Calvin Austin had a ball hit him directly in the hands, which he dropped, and was picked off. The Steelers had an EPA per pass of -0.50 and an EPA per play of -0.37, per RBSDM stats. It was by far their worst offensive showing of the season.

PR Ke’Shawn Williams

Williams muffed a punt that was recovered by the Chargers and led to a field goal. The game was practically over by this time, but still not great to see.

Division Title Hopes

The Steelers held a three-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens a month ago. Now, they are 5-4 with the Ravens having won their last three games to get to 4-5. With Baltimore getting healthy and hot at the right time, it certainly looks like they will come all the way back from a 1-5 start to win the division, which is a massive mole on Mike Tomlin.

It should be a good Monday Night Football matchup to close out Week 10 as the 6-2 Philadelphia Eagles take on the 5-2-1 Green Bay Packers.

It’s a battle between two teams that have looked dominant at times this season, but are still far from perfect. The game could also have ramifications in the NFL playoff picture down the road.

Mike Tomlin says Steelers need more out of receivers

imagn-27308298.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers posted their worst offensive performance of the season in a disappointing 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.

Pittsburgh began the scoring with a first-quarter first goal, but didn’t score its lone touchdown until the final three minutes with the game out of reach. DK Metcalf led the Steelers with three catches for 35 yards. He did not reach the end zone. Defenses have paid specific attention to Metcalf and have succeeded in multiple games to take him out of the fold.

Mike Tomlin believes that other wide receivers and tight ends have stepped up to fill the void, but the loss to the Chargers wasn’t one of them.

“At times, we certainly have,” Tomlin said in his weekly press conference. “But last week was an example of us not doing so.”

Roman Wilson tied Metcalf with 35 yards and the lone touchdown from Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers only threw for 161 yards, and the lack of a No. 2 wide receiver following the trade deadline is obvious.

“In other weeks, it certainly has been the case [that guys have stepped up],” Tomlin said. “Each and every week it seems like somebody, whether it’s from the wide out room or the tight end room, steps up and has quality contributions that balance that out.”

Metcalf leads the Steelers with 502 receiving yards. The next closest is Pat Freiermuth (260), who has totaled 13 or fewer yards in three of the Steelers’ eight games.

Roman Wilson has come on with a touchdown in two of the last three games, but still isn’t developing quickly enough for a third-round pick. Calvin Austin III has shown flashes, but is still not a dependable No. 2 option.

The Steelers decided not to trade for a receiver before the clock struck 4 p.m. Tuesday for their opportunity to do so, leaving them with their current core intact to take the pressure off Metcalf and fix their glaring issue in the passing game.

The Steelers will need to even the season series with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday to avoid falling to 5-5 on the year and to remain in first place in the AFC North.

Report: Steelers cut safety, making room for Asante Samuel Jr.

gettyimages-2149314284.jpg

The Steelers cut safety Darrick Forest from the team’s practice squad, Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders reported Tuesday.

The move gives the Steelers the space make room for the reported signing of free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

Forest signed with the Steelers practice squad on Oct. 28 following DeShon Elliott’s injury against the Green Bay Packers. However, he never appeared in a game for Pittsburgh.

Forest was a former fifth-round draft pick by the Washington Commanders with 40 career games with 17 starts.

Neither the Forest release nor the Samuel signing have been officially announced by the Steelers yet. Samuel, a former second-round pick, has 47 career starts in 50 career games in the NFL. He’s coming off an April spinal fusion surgery.

Swapping out Forest for Samuel on the practice squad wasn’t the only piece of defensive back news for Pittsburgh; the team also worked out former first-round cornerback C.J. Henderson, who has had stints in Pittsburgh before, on Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering must-win territory as they enter the back half of their schedule, and they’ll take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11 in hopes of getting to 6-4. The Steelers held their first practice of the week, and a surprise name did not practice due to injury.

Left tackle Broderick Jones missed practice due to a groin injury. He didn’t miss any time against the Los Angeles Chargers, but it could be something to monitor throughout the week. Alex Highsmith also missed practice due to a pectoral injury. The full injury report is as follows:

Steelers activate QB Will Howard

gettyimages-2219834893.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a big move on Tuesday, signing free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to their practice squad. When Samuel will make his Steelers’ debut is unknown, but considering how quickly Kyle Dugger has stepped in and been productive, Samuel could take the field as early as Week 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Steelers made a slew of roster moves along with the Samuel signing, including making rookie quarterback Will Howard active for the first time this season, the team announced. In addition, the Steelers waived running back Trey Sermon from the active roster and released safety Darrick Forrest.

We have activated QB Will Howard to the Active Roster from the Reserve/Injured List, signed CB Asante Samuel Jr. to the Practice Squad, waived RB Trey Sermon from the Active Roster & released DB Darrick Forrest from the Practice Squad. @BordasLawhttps://t.co/1Fxb4XYDnB

Being that Mason Rudolph is the backup to Aaron Rodgers, it’s likely that Howard will be made the emergency third quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher Alex Highsmith missed his second straight practice on Thursday as he continues to deal with a pectoral injury. This doesn’t bode well for his status on Sunday, but we’ll see what Friday brings.

Left tackle Broderick Jones did return to practice, however, in a limited basis. The full injury report is as follows:

  • LB Alex Highsmith (pec)
  • CB Darius Slay (concussion)

Alex Highsmith, two other defenders OUT vs. Bengals

gettyimages-2245003607.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers will host the Cincinnati Bengals in the second of two matchups between the two teams in Week 11. The Steelers lost the first matchup and are in must-win territory as they try to hold off the Baltimore Ravens from taking over the AFC North lead.

The Steelers will be playing without three notable defenders in Week 11, most notably Alex Highsmith. Highsmith did not practice all week with a pectoral injury. He was coming off two consecutive games of two sacks against the Colts and Chargers, respectively. Cole Holcomb (illness) and Darius Slay (concussion) are both out, as well.

Cornerback Cory Trice (hamstring/knee) and guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) are listed as questionable. No one else on the roster has a game designation.

With Highsmith out of the lineup, Nick Herbig will have a bigger role, which has boded well for the Steelers this season. Herbig has 5.5 sacks on the season, as well as two forced fumbles and an interception.

Friday Night Happy Hour: Practice squad edition

gettyimages-2171216752.jpg

Welcome back to BTSC’s Friday night open thread.

  1. Asante Samuel Jr. is the latest Steeler, a once-coveted free agent cornerback who’s now on the Pittsburgh practice squad. How impactful do you think this signing actually is?
  2. The Steelers are coming off two wildly different games — a big win versus the Colts and an even bigger loss against the Chargers. Which game was more indicative of the team Pittsburgh really is?
  3. The Steelers’ wide receiver depth has become a topic of concern following Sunday’s loss. Would you consider elevating Marquez Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad this week? Would it even make a difference?
  4. If one part of the Steelers offense has been a pleasant surprise recently, it’s the right side of the offensive line. The left side, however, has been a bit more up and down. This offseason, with Broderick Jones’ fifth-year option decision due and Isaac Seumalo reaching free agency, what would you do?
  5. Past-their-prime greats have been the theme of the Steelers quarterback room of the past several years. How would rank late-career Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, and Aaron Rodgers’ time in Pittsburgh?
  6. I recently played an older Mario Kart title with some friends and was hit with a heavy dose of nostalgia. Are there any past video games that have the same effect on you?

Steelers downgrade cornerback to OUT vs. Bengals

gettyimages-2172280268.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their final injury report on Friday, with edge rusher Alex Highsmith, linebacker Cole Holcomb, and cornerback Darius Slay all ruled out. Cornerback Cory Trice was listed as questionable on the final injury report, but has now been downgraded to out, the team announced.

#Steelers DB Cory Trice Jr. has been downgraded to OUT for Sunday's game (he is still in the IR 21-day window for return).

— Burt Lauten (@SteelersPRBurt) November 15, 2025

Trice hasn’t played at all this season and only played in six games in 2024 due to injury. He was placed on IR at the end of August and had his 21-day window opened ahead of Week 9. If he isn’t activated by Tuesday, his season is over.

Trice was drafted in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but was lost for the season in training camp after tearing his ACL. He had a big splash play in Week 2 of the 2024 season, picking off Bo Nix in the end zone to kill a potential scoring drive. He has appeared in six games since being drafted.

Saturday Night Open Thread: Cincinnati time waster

gettyimages-2241511650.jpg

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here at BTSC to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

At 5-4 our margin for error is dwindling. We can’t be the one to bungal on Sunday. Our secondary needs to Chase their WR all over the field, make them work for every catch. Can we rebound after a pathetic showing vs the Chargers? Almost time to find out if we can make Joe Flacco feel his age.

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going, so let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

1: Aaron Rodgers had a bad game vs the Chargers: 16 of 31 for 161 yards, 1TD, sacked thrice (one a safety) and threw two interceptions. Throws seems to be off target and generally didn’t play well. Does Rodgers rebound against the Bengals? Predict his stat line.

2: The Steelers pass defense still seems to have miscommunications/ coverage errors. Ladd McConkey had a wide open 15-yard TD last week, and during the first Bengals TNF game Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were left wide open at times. Do you think the Steelers can at least make Chase and Higgins work for their catches this week or do we see more of the same blown coverage?

3: The line for Joe Flacco passing yards is 255.5. Over or under?

4: The Steelers signed Asante Samuel Jr. this week. What other son of a former NFL player should the Steelers look at acquiring (most will have to wait till next year)?

  • Frank Gore Jr.: Son of Frank Gore Sr., a former NFL running back
  • Marvin Harrison Jr.: Son of NFL Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison
  • Mason Taylor: Son of Jason Taylor
  • Brenden Rice: Son of Jerry Rice

5: While traveling this week, my wife met the love of her life in the Reno airport. Went right up to him and put her hands all over him as he slobbered over her. I admit, I joined in. Who was he? A leonberger dog working for Paws for Passengers. They are massive. What’s your favorite breed of dog OR breed of pet?

6: Some guys I work with are having their jobs “restructured”, adding supervisor responsibilities and cutting OT pay to 1x instead of 1.5x. They were told they’d have to apply and “take the interview seriously.” Pretty close to a Dilbert cartoon. What’s the most Dilbert thing you’ve seen at a place of work?

Jalen Ramsey explains why he punched Ja’Marr Chase

gettyimages-2247025776.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 34-12 in Week 11 to improve to 6-4 on the season, but it didn’t come without controversy.

With just under 13 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey and Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase got into a skirmish that led to Ramsey being ejected. The All-Pro defensive back hit the Bengals’ star in the face, which got him disqualified.

Speaking to the media after the game, Ramsey revealed that Chase had spit on him, which is why he reacted the way he did.

“He spit on me,” Ramsey said via Brendan Howe of Steelers Now. So it’s up. I don’t give a f*ck about football after that, respectfully.“

Chase denied spitting on Ramsey.

“I didn’t spit on nobody,” Chase said via Noah Hiles.

Schefter: Aaron Rodgers believed to have ‘slight break’ in wrist

gettyimages-2246499686.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers improved to 6-4 on the season in a dominant 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, all but ending their division rival’s playoff hopes in the process. The win didn’t come without a cost, though.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers left the game at the end of the first half with an injury to his left arm. He was grabbing the arm and flexing his wrist after being taken to the ground by a pair of Bengals defenders. He didn’t return to the game, and Mason Rudolph led the Steelers the rest of the way. Rodgers will undergo testing on Monday, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Rodgers is believed to have a slight break in the wrist.

“The initial concern is that Aaron Rodgers has, in the words of one source, ‘a slight break’[in] his left wrist, but the Steelers quarterback will undergo further testing Monday to determine the full extent of the injury and how long he’ll be sidelined, per league sources,” Schefter reports on X.

You had better believe Rodgers doesn’t want to miss the Steelers’ Week 12 matchup with the Bears in Chicago, as his history against that franchise is self-explanatory after spending nearly two decades with the Green Bay Packers. If he can’t go, though, Rudolph will be the man to lead the Steelers next Sunday.

Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase faces one-game suspension after spitting incident vs. Steelers

gettyimages-2241641911.jpg

Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is facing a one-game suspension from the NFL after he was captured on video spitting on Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey in the Steelers’ 34-12 win over Cincinnati on Sunday.

The announcement was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

NFL suspended Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase for spitting at Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey. Chase denied spitting at Ramsey, but the league determined the video evidence was sufficient to warrant a suspension. pic.twitter.com/ogVs66Xjeh

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 17, 2025

Ramsey was ejected from the game after punching Chase in the fourth quarter, saying after the game it was because the wide receiver spit on him. Referee Bill Vinovich said in the postgame pool report that he didn’t see the spit.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) November 16, 2025

Chase denied spitting on Ramsey after the game, but a video posted by FOX19’s Austin Briski later clearly showed that the incident took place.

The video clearly shows he did.#Bengals @FOX19 pic.twitter.com/ooGzInoPdS

— Austin Briski (@austin_briski) November 16, 2025

If the suspension is upheld, Chase will miss the Bengals’ upcoming game against the New England Patriots and return for Cincinnati’s Week 13 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected from a game and fined $57,222 after spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 1. He was suspended a game by the NFL, but because he was ejected seconds into the Cowboys matchup, Week 1 counted towards it.

NFL Public Relations’ Brian McCarthy said that if Chase appeals the suspension, his case will be heard by either Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, or former Steeler Ramon Foster.

Steelers make roster moves Tuesday

gettyimages-2167729511.jpg

The Steelers adjusted their practice squad on Tuesday, signing wide receiver John Rhys Plumlee and releasing safety Jack Henderson to make room.

This will mark Plumlee’s third stint with the Steelers. He spent the summer with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2024 but didn’t make the initial roster or practice squad, spending the season with the Jaguars and Seahawks. Plumlee was waived by Seattle ahead of the 2025 seasons, signing back with the Steelers practice squad in October.

Pittsburgh released Plumlee again on Nov. 4. Now, he finds himself back in Pittsburgh.

To make room for Plumlee, Pittsburgh released Henderson, who signed with the team on Oct. 6 after being released by the New England Patriots in September.

The Steelers also worked out five players on Tuesday, reported by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor via the NFL transaction sheet.

Steelers had a handful of WRs and QBs in for a tryout today.

Also according to the NFL Transactions report, the team signed WR John Rhys Plumlee to the PS and released DB Jack Henderson pic.twitter.com/AxCdQbxQ9a

The players include quarterbacks Jason Bean and Tanner Mordecai, as well as wide receivers Cole Burgess, Elijah Cooks, and Cornell Powell.

All were undrafted except for Powell, who went in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to the Kansas City Chiefs out of Clemson. He’s played in three career games and has yet to record a catch at the NFL level. The 6’0, 204-pound wide receiver ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

Wednesday links: Did the Steelers really lose the George Pickens trade?

gettyimages-2247216146.jpg

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for a weekly Steelers links roundup at BTSC. But first, let’s take a look around the AFC North:

What’s the latest on the Steelers’ upcoming opponent?

Now, onto some Steelers news and discussion:

Recently-Released Steelers Starter Signs With AFC Contender

(From Steelers Now’s Aaron Becker): Former Pittsburgh Steelers veteran safety Juan Thornhill has signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad after clearing waivers last week, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

Thornhill wasn’t picked up on waivers, but it still didn’t take him long to land with another team. And while Jacksonville isn’t on Pittsburgh’s regular season schedule, both teams are currently in the playoff picture.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has perfect 14-word response to Jalen Ramsey being spat on

(From Steelers Wire’s Andrew Vasquez): On Tuesday, Tomlin was asked for comment on Ramsey’s situation with Chase — specifically questioned on what message he gave to the outspoken defender on how to remove himself from confrontations such as that one. And Tomlin provided a 14-word response in defense of Ramsey.

“I have no message if someone spits in your face,” Tomlin said. “Do what comes natural.”

There are a variety of opinions on Mike Tomlin’s press conference sayings. This one, in my opinion, is a perfect response.

A look back at the Steelers’ long and ugly history in Chicago

(From TribLive’s Tim Benz): Since 1936, there have been as many Allied victories in Europe as there have been Steelers victories in Chicago.

One.

If you want a game-by-game summary of the Steelers’ past losses in the Windy City, look no further than the above article. Of course, historical stats such as Pittsburgh not winning in Chicago since 1995 don’t really mean anything in the context of Sunday’s upcoming game, but they are unbelievable nonetheless.

All-Pro Safety Signs with Colts after Steelers Visit

(From Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders): Former Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers safety and All-Pro special teamer George Odum re-signed with the Colts on Tuesday after having previously visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this season.

A followup on the Steelers’ George Odum workout earlier this season; he would’ve been a potential replacement for the injured Miles Killebrew on special teams.

Ja’Marr Chase has ridiculous argument against his suspension after Steelers game

(From PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh): According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Chase has an argument, and it is if he really meant to spit on Ramsey, he would have hit him in the helmet, not spit down at his feet.

“His argument essentially being, as far as I understand, if he was going to spit on Jalen Ramsey, he wouldn’t spit on his face rather than on the floor or on his jersey,” Rapoport said.

Did this work? (No). Chase’s suspension was upheld late on Tuesday by NFLPA officer Jordy Nelson.

The winner of Steelers-Cowboys George Pickens trade just became crystal clear

(From Still Curtain’s Tommy Jaggi): If Pittsburgh Steelers fans didn’t have regrets about trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys before the 2025 season, they do now. Against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football in Week 11, Pickens had a performance that even put fellow wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to shame.

From early in the game, Pickens proved to be quarterback Dak Prescott’s favorite target. The fourth-year receiver and former 2022 second-round pick carved up a suspect Raiders secondary. Las Vegas had no answer for Pickens. By the end of the Cowboys’ 33-16 blowout win, Pickens finished with nine receptions on 11 targets for 144 yards and a touchdown.

There’s no denying that Pickens put up an excellent performance on Monday night for the Cowboys. The 24-year-old is enjoying a career season, and his 908 receiving yards on the year put him second in the NFL. The downside? It’s reopened discussions on if the Steelers really made the right move letting Pickens go.

Did the Steelers really lose the George Pickens trade?

If you want to thoroughly answer this, of course, you’ll have to wait and see who the third-round pick Pittsburgh acquired from Dallas in the trade turns out to be. (There was a Dallas fifth for a Pittsburgh sixth swap as well).

But I’d argue the circumstances of the trade make the idea of the Steelers winning or losing it rather moot.

Pickens hasn’t been all that complimentary of Pittsburgh since leaving, and before the trade it was fairly obvious to anyone following the Steelers that he and the team were headed towards an eventual split. To call on a common Mike Tomlin-ism, it was a “volunteers, not hostages” situation.

Pickens was never going to re-sign with the Steelers. And Pittsburgh, in a transition year, decided to move on to secure an earlier — and better — pick than the team would’ve received with the compensatory formula.

And while Pickens has enjoyed the best year of his career so far in Dallas, I think it’s fair to say he wouldn’t be having those same results in Pittsburgh — a passing game that has struggled to create explosive plays, and feed even one wide receiver in D.K. Metcalf.

No one doubted Pickens’ talents when he was traded, and from a football perspective, it’s been great to watch him live up to his potential more in 2025. The Cowboys got one of the most dynamic receivers in the league on the last year of his rookie deal, while the Steeler offense has looked lacking in talent at times.

Right now, it doesn’t make sense to argue against the Cowboys winning the trade. But anyone claiming Pittsburgh was “fleeced” by Dallas probably wasn’t paying close attention to the situation pre-trade.

Steelers CB out for season

The Pittsburgh Steelers did not activate cornerback Cory Trice within his 21-day window, meaning his season is over.

This is the second season Trice has missed in his three-year career. In 2023, he tore his ACL in training camp. He appeared in just six games in 2024 due to injury, as well. The Purdue product didn’t take the field in 2025, meaning once the season is done, he will have played in just six out of 51 games.

The Steelers signed free agent Asante Samuel Jr. last Tuesday and have gotten great production out of James Pierre, so the depth and top-end talent are both there. However, it’s been a very frustrating road for Trice, who has likely played his last snap as a Steeler.
