News Stars Team Notes

Afterwords: The Other Finn

Poor Mikael Granlund. POV: You are a talented NHL forward who is traded mid-season from one of the worst teams in the league to a legitimate Stanley Cup contender in the Dallas Stars. The team has a whole contingent of players from your home country of Finland for you to bond over, and you are the big pickup for the team — they gave up a first round pick(!) for you after all…

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Finns on a Heater

Oh yeah, we have another Finn making noise. It’s gameday, and I’m going to preemptively call it good vibes day. Game 5 in Dallas was certainly not perfect – playoff games never are – but on the scale of good vibes, I’m calling the last couple of days a ten. Stars fans have the Finnish Mafia back at full strength*, Jake Oettinger had an almost complete shutdown performance in net…

Afterwords: Ghosts of Playoffs Past

Two years ago, I got to go to a Western Conference Final game for the first time in my life when the Dallas Stars took on the Vegas Golden Knights (I didn’t get a chance in 07-08). I went home without being able to celebrate a single goal. Thankfully, I would later get a second chance as the Stars forced Game 6… only to not get to celebrate a single goal and instead watch the Stars get eliminated…

Stargazing, A Dallas Stars Puckcast – Episode 291: Round 2 Weekend Update

It sometimes seems as if the Dallas Stars are only permitted to have one player get hot at a time. But do you need Mikko Rantanen to score a hat trick every game when Mikael Granlund can go off in his stead? A lot has happened in the past five days, and Wes and Mark want to talk about all of it. In this edition of Stargazing, they examine the advantages of having two No. 1 defensemen…

Afterwords: Otter Was Better

My hot take from the second round series between the Dallas Stars and the Winnipeg Jets? Connor Hellebuyck played very well. He was one of if not the key story beats almost every single night, in large part due to his horrendous performance on the road in Round 1 that got him yanked all three games in St. Louis. He was the basket case of a goaltender who just couldn’t show up when it mattered…

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Less Mikko Is More?

In an article released yesterday, Dallas Morning News writer, Tim Cowlishaw published a piece that discussed Mikko Rantanen’s production in relation to his minutes played. Tim’s conclusion was that the less Mikko was on the ice, the more productive he has been this postseason. Here is an excerpt from his article regarding Rantanen: This is quite the observation, and while the numbers don’…

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Revving The Harley

It’s been quite the season for Thomas Harley. It all started when he signed a 2 year/$8 million contract in the fall, but that was just the beginning. He ended up having to lead the blueline after Miro Heiskanen’s injury in January, followed by winning a gold medal in February, and he unquestionably helped power the Stars post-4 Nations to where they are now in the Western Conference Finals.

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Digging Deep

The Dallas Stars’ regular season’s top scorer finally tallies one. The narratives continue, as they always do this time of year. First it was “can the Stars contain Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar without Miro Heiskanen?” Then Game 7 happened. Next, the narrative was “which U.S. goalkeeper will rise to the top?,” and we all saw how that went. Now, it’s “Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl…

Afterwords: Comeback Kids

Maybe it’s the “lifelong Dallas Cowboys” fan in me, but I often default to being a sports pessimist. Case and point: this is a text I sent to my dad and brother last night when watching on a major tape delay (they had finished as soon as I started): I also want to point out that while I sent that after the second period, I was thinking it as soon as the Edmonton Oilers went up 3-1.

Afterwords: Here We Go Again

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Dallas Stars were unable to score on Stuart Skinner in the Western Conference Final and got beat out on special teams, losing a game they should have been more than capable of winning. It’s what happened last year, and what I was worried about happening again late in the second round against the Winnipeg Jets. But hey, Dallas managed to flip the script…

Afterwords: From Bad to Worse

Now that’s what I expect to watch when I see the Dallas Stars play a matinee game. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion, except after the train derailed, another train came and crashed right into it. And then the trains caught on fire. And then they exploded. And then a bunch of arsonists danced on the remains while setting off fireworks. And I watched the whole thing.

Stargazing, A Dallas Stars Puckcast – Episode 292: Western Conference Final Preview

The Dallas Stars and the Edmonton Oilers have won their way to the Western Conference Final by working each other’s side of the street. The Stars have gotten all-time performances from their superstars, while the Oil’s goaltending and depth scoring have come through for them in a big way. So what does this tell us about the rematch we’ve all been waiting for? Wes and Mark worked After Dark to…

Afterwords: Out of Gas

For 30-40 minutes tonight, the Dallas Stars looked like the better team. They for sure were right out of the gate, absolutely lighting up Stuart Skinner and the Edmonton Oilers with shot attempts, shots on goal, offensive zone time, you name it. Well, unless you’re naming goals, because therein lies the problem: the Stars, once again, were unable to score against the Oilers, in what has been…
