Quick bites: Sharks zapped by Lightning

The San Jose Sharks learned what it takes to be a top team in the NHL by one of the top teams in the NHL. The Tampa Bay Lightning made short work of the Sharks, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and then coasting to an easy 7-3 win over the Sharks. “Sluggish start against a little bit of, obviously, a pretty good team. You’re down early and you’re kind of…

Time to talk early season trades

The San Jose Sharks have 50 contracts on the books, but with Michael Misa returning from the World Junior Championship in a few days, the team is going to have to make a decision soon. Once Misa plays his nine NHL games, the Sharks have to decide if he stays on the roster full-time and his contract goes into action or if he’s sent back to his junior team. The Sharks are starting to run out of ways…

Lightning at Sharks game 41: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The Tampa Bay Lightning pay the team’s one and only visit to the SAP Center during the regular season in yet another test for this young San Jose Sharks’ squad. The Lightning are among the better teams in the NHL with a 24-13-3 record. That’s good enough for second in the Atlantic Division and fifth in the league. This is Tampa Bay’s final stop on its California road trip…

Blue Jackets at Sharks game 42: Line, game thread and how to watch

The second half of the season officially starts tonight for the San Jose Sharks and the team begins with a showdown with another rebuilding squad, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Like the Sharks, Columbus is looking to take a step forward this season and that means making the playoffs. For the Blue Jackets, this season has been disappointing in that regard. The team is 8th in the Metropolitan…

Sharks at Kings game 43: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks hopped a plane this morning and headed to Los Angeles for the second game in as many nights. This is a very important game for the Sharks because the team has a chance to move up in the standings, and while it’s still early in the season by playoff standards, it’s points like these that matter most. The Los Angeles Kings are just above the Sharks in the wild card race…

Sharks make a splash, Jackets get drenched

The San Jose Sharks showed why the team is dangerous when it clicked in the third period. The Sharks turned up the heat, controlling the puck, winning battles along the boards, and burying timely goals to pull away from Columbus. Energy filled the tank at home, and the team’s identity was on full display. Ten minutes behind the starting time, the Sharks lost the opening faceoff…

Sharks trade Furlong, Ellis to Blackhawks for Brossoit and Nolan Allan

The San Jose Sharks made an interesting trade today, potentially clearing the way for a larger deal in the near future. The team moved two defensemen, Jake Furlong and Ryan Ellis, along with a 2028 fourth-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for goaltender Laurent Brossoit, defenseman Nolan Allan and a 2028 seventh-round pick. (Small brag because I suggested a Furlong trade last week.

Stars at Sharks game 44: Lines, game thread and how to watch

There are a lot of things the San Jose Sharks have done right this season, but the one thing this team has struggled with is matching up with some of the heavyweights in the NHL. This weekend will put the Sharks to the test, and it starts with a showdown with the Dallas Stars. The Sharks have had a tough time showing up when it counts against the Stars. The last time these two teams met…

Sharks special teams rockets them past the Stars

The San Jose Sharks hosted the Dallas Stars on the first day of a back-to-back against two hard hitting, highly skilled teams, with the Vegas Golden Knights coming tomorrow. Coming off two exhilarating wins against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings that put them in sole possession of the first wild card spot in the West, the Sharks had a challenge ahead of them: have a good showing…

Been following the Sharks pretty closely this stretch and it's encouraging to see them stringing together some quality wins. That third period against Columbus was exactly the kind of hockey this team needs to play consistently - winning board battles and capitalizing when it matters.

The Brossoit trade is interesting. Moving Furlong and Ellis feels like the front office is trying to create some roster flexibility. Brossoit's a solid backup option and Nolan Allan adds some depth on the blue line. Curious to see if this is setting up something bigger before the deadline.

That said, the real test is these matchups against elite teams. Dallas was a good measuring stick and the special teams stepping up was huge. Vegas tomorrow is going to be a grind though. Back-to-backs against those two teams will tell us a lot about where this squad really stands.

Sitting in that first wild card spot is nice but there's a lot of hockey left. The Kings game was the type of divisional matchup that could pay dividends come April if the standings stay tight.

Golden Knights at Sharks game 45: Lines, game thread and how to watch

It’s another big game for the San Jose Sharks, who will face another of the top teams in the NHL tonight. The Vegas Golden Knights come into town this evening for the second night of back-to-back games. The Sharks are going to have to have short memories after an exhilarating 5-4 overtime win over the Dallas Stars yesterday. The good news for the Sharks is that Vegas played yesterday as well and…

Quick bites: Golden Knights flash their talent to beat the Sharks

24 hours after coming off an emotional comeback win against the Dallas Stars, the Sharks were back in front of the SAP center crowd to take on the Pacific Division leading Vegas Golden Knights. The visiting team included a Tomas Hertl return to the tank and a Knights team the Sharks are chasing down for the Division lead. Michael Misa slots in at 3C after not playing since November due to injury…

Sharks at Capitals game 46: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks are on the road and hoping to shake off those demons from another failed attempt to beat the Vegas Golden Knights. San Jose can prove that it has what it takes to compete in the playoffs by taking on another playoff contender today, the Washington Capitals. The last time these two teams met, the Sharks didn’t fare well. The Capitals beat up on the Sharks, dominating San Jose 7…

Sharks at Red Wings game 47: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks continue this crazy road trip with a hop, skip and a jump to Detroit. The Sharks visit the Detroit Red Wings today for the second half of back-to-back games. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the Red Wings are well rested and angry. Detroit hasn’t played since Tuesday, when the team was shutout by the Boston Bruins 3-0 and outshot 41-24. Detroit is doing well in the last ten…

Quick Bites: Sharks have capital in Washington

The San Jose Sharks started off the team’s East Coast swing with a tilt against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, the rematch coming about a month after a rough outing for the Sharks at SAP Center. In what could possibly have been San Jose’s last game against the Great 8, San Jose narrowly escaped with a 3-2 victory to start the trip off on the right foot. This game started off as a…

Quick bites: Red Wings double up Sharks

The San Jose Sharks looked good in the first period in Detroit, with the return of Will Smith seemingly giving the team a boost. But maintaining that pace through a 60-minute game against the Detroit Red Wings, another team in a playoff position in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, was not to be. Ultimately, the Red Wings beat the Sharks 4-2 in a game that was filled with miscues and missteps that…

Sharks need a right-shot defenseman who fits the timeline, but who?

San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier is looking to make a deal at the trade deadline and he wants to find someone who will fit into the timeline of the team. While not specifically said, it means someone young and developing who will, ideally, go all the way with this team. It’s no secret that the Sharks’ biggest need is a defenseman who plays on the right-side, but there are a lot of…

Sharks at Panthers game 48: Lines, game thread and how to watch

San Jose Sharks fans are waiting to see what happens as General Manager Mike Grier makes moves from the front office. Earlier today, the team added Kiefer Sherwood in a trade with Vancouver, a move that will have a significant impact on the forward grouping, though we’re not sure how just yet. It’s just the latest move. Yesterday, San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng was the first to report that…

Quick bites: Sharks go to war with the Panthers

The San Jose Sharks have matched up exactly twice with the Florida Panthers this season and twice the team has skated away with wins. Tonight, the Sharks defeated the Panthers 4-1 in a penalty filled fest that included a combined for 38 penalty minutes, including the unicorn of them all, the rare goalie fight. Things started out mundane enough, with some fairly good hockey back and forth…

Sharks at Lightning game 49: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks need to get back to business today and not spend too much time thinking about everything that happened in Sunrise last night. The Sharks have a tough matchup this afternoon against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that has been tearing through the league as of late. The Lightning are 9-0-1 in the team’s last ten games and are sitting atop the Atlantic Division as of this…
