Quick Bites: Sharks flounder in Vegas

As a San Jose Sharks fan, if you were already having a bad day – maybe you forgot your dose of SSRIs, were anxious about the upcoming holidays, or maybe you simply felt woozy about this game – it’s likely that the first period at T-Mobile Arena only exacerbated your symptoms. Each team rode a two-game losing streak heading into the game, with this being the final night for both before the NHL’s…

Liljegren Finds His Game as Sharks Continue to Grow

Progress in the National Hockey League doesn’t always show up right away. Sometimes it’s not about wins or losses. It’s about how you respond when games start to slip. For the San Jose Sharks, that response has started to change. Timothy Liljegren has seen it firsthand. “You can kind of notice that we don’t give up in games,” Liljegren said. Even when things don’t start their way…

Sharks at Canucks game 38: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks return from the holiday break with a matchup that will hopefully get the team back on track, a revamped Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are in the team’s post-Quinn Hughes era after a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Wild that sent the superstar defenseman to the Central Division and injected the Canucks with some high-end youth. On the backend…

Quick bites: Sharks double up Canucks

The San Jose Sharks returned from the Christmas break rested and ready to start on time. Unlike the last few games, the Sharks were ready to go from the drop of the puck and then didn’t let up no matter what twists and turns the game took. Which is why Natural Stat Trick’s Game Flow chart in all situations shows a steady increase in Sharks possession as the game wore on.

Sharks at Canucks game 39: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks finish up the short two/three game road trip (three if you count that it straddled the Christmas break) with a visit to the Anaheim Ducks. The Sharks are coming off a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks, while the Ducks are coming off a 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Both teams are in a playoff spot as of this morning. The Ducks are second in the Pacific Division…

Quick bites: Sharks survive visit to Anaheim

At the end of the season, they don’t ask how; they ask how many, and in the world of Sharks stats, last night was a regulation win over a division rival, even if it was incredibly ugly. The San Jose Sharks were outshot and out-possessed in a 5-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Natural Stat Trick’s Corsi Differential in all situations shows just how lopsided the puck possession was between the…

Quick bites: Sharks sweep season series with Wild

The San Jose Sharks aren’t the best team in the league, but somehow, some way, the Sharks have the Minnesota Wild’s number. It took extra time once again, but the Sharks swept the season series with the Wild today, with a 4-3 shootout win. The win claimed the Sharks’ 20th win of the season, equaling San Jose’s total wins in all of the 2024-25 season. The last time the Sharks had 20 or more wins…

Wild at Sharks game 40: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks welcome the Minnesota Wild to the Shark Tank today, hoping to sweep the season series. It’s a much different Wild team than the Sharks have played in the past two outings. The Sharks won the previous two meetings, though both of those happened before the Quinn Hughes trade. San Jose won 6-5 in overtime on Oct. 26 and 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 11. But now, the Wild have one…

Hot take: It’s not Chernyshov’s time yet

San Jose Sharks fans have been pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Igor Chernyshov, who has not looked out of place in his seven games with the NHL squad so far. Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky was blunt when asked if the 20-year-old belonged in the NHL recently, answering with a simple “Yes.” But whether he sticks around after everyone gets healthy is another question. Sharks fans may need to be…

Macklin Celebrini named to Team Canada Olympic roster

After months and months of speculation, only made stronger by exceptional play by the 19-year-old, Team Canada’s brain trust made it official this morning by naming young Sharks’ center Macklin Celebrini to the Olympic roster. Celebrini will join the best of the best on the world stage in Milan in February, and he could very well play a top-six role for Team Canada; he’s had that good a season…

Quick bites: Sharks zapped by Lightning

The San Jose Sharks learned what it takes to be a top team in the NHL by one of the top teams in the NHL. The Tampa Bay Lightning made short work of the Sharks, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and then coasting to an easy 7-3 win over the Sharks. “Sluggish start against a little bit of, obviously, a pretty good team. You’re down early and you’re kind of…

Time to talk early season trades

The San Jose Sharks have 50 contracts on the books, but with Michael Misa returning from the World Junior Championship in a few days, the team is going to have to make a decision soon. Once Misa plays his nine NHL games, the Sharks have to decide if he stays on the roster full-time and his contract goes into action or if he’s sent back to his junior team. The Sharks are starting to run out of ways…

Lightning at Sharks game 41: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The Tampa Bay Lightning pay the team’s one and only visit to the SAP Center during the regular season in yet another test for this young San Jose Sharks’ squad. The Lightning are among the better teams in the NHL with a 24-13-3 record. That’s good enough for second in the Atlantic Division and fifth in the league. This is Tampa Bay’s final stop on its California road trip…

Blue Jackets at Sharks game 42: Line, game thread and how to watch

The second half of the season officially starts tonight for the San Jose Sharks and the team begins with a showdown with another rebuilding squad, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Like the Sharks, Columbus is looking to take a step forward this season and that means making the playoffs. For the Blue Jackets, this season has been disappointing in that regard. The team is 8th in the Metropolitan…

Sharks at Kings game 43: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks hopped a plane this morning and headed to Los Angeles for the second game in as many nights. This is a very important game for the Sharks because the team has a chance to move up in the standings, and while it’s still early in the season by playoff standards, it’s points like these that matter most. The Los Angeles Kings are just above the Sharks in the wild card race…

Sharks make a splash, Jackets get drenched

The San Jose Sharks showed why the team is dangerous when it clicked in the third period. The Sharks turned up the heat, controlling the puck, winning battles along the boards, and burying timely goals to pull away from Columbus. Energy filled the tank at home, and the team’s identity was on full display. Ten minutes behind the starting time, the Sharks lost the opening faceoff…

Sharks trade Furlong, Ellis to Blackhawks for Brossoit and Nolan Allan

The San Jose Sharks made an interesting trade today, potentially clearing the way for a larger deal in the near future. The team moved two defensemen, Jake Furlong and Ryan Ellis, along with a 2028 fourth-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for goaltender Laurent Brossoit, defenseman Nolan Allan and a 2028 seventh-round pick. (Small brag because I suggested a Furlong trade last week.

Stars at Sharks game 44: Lines, game thread and how to watch

There are a lot of things the San Jose Sharks have done right this season, but the one thing this team has struggled with is matching up with some of the heavyweights in the NHL. This weekend will put the Sharks to the test, and it starts with a showdown with the Dallas Stars. The Sharks have had a tough time showing up when it counts against the Stars. The last time these two teams met…

Sharks special teams rockets them past the Stars

The San Jose Sharks hosted the Dallas Stars on the first day of a back-to-back against two hard hitting, highly skilled teams, with the Vegas Golden Knights coming tomorrow. Coming off two exhilarating wins against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings that put them in sole possession of the first wild card spot in the West, the Sharks had a challenge ahead of them: have a good showing…

Been following the Sharks pretty closely this stretch and it's encouraging to see them stringing together some quality wins. That third period against Columbus was exactly the kind of hockey this team needs to play consistently - winning board battles and capitalizing when it matters.

The Brossoit trade is interesting. Moving Furlong and Ellis feels like the front office is trying to create some roster flexibility. Brossoit's a solid backup option and Nolan Allan adds some depth on the blue line. Curious to see if this is setting up something bigger before the deadline.

That said, the real test is these matchups against elite teams. Dallas was a good measuring stick and the special teams stepping up was huge. Vegas tomorrow is going to be a grind though. Back-to-backs against those two teams will tell us a lot about where this squad really stands.

Sitting in that first wild card spot is nice but there's a lot of hockey left. The Kings game was the type of divisional matchup that could pay dividends come April if the standings stay tight.
