Let’s chat: Which Seahawks opponent do you most want to face in Week 1?

Minnesota Vikings v Seattle Seahawks

Photo by Christopher Mast/Getty Images

Call your shot! Who do you want to see the Seahawks face on opening day?

The 2025 Seattle Seahawks regular season schedule will go live this Wednesday. As noted last week, the Seahawks are almost certainly going to be playing Week 1 at home due to Lumen Field’s availability that weekend. If we assume a home game, these are the Seahawks’ possible opponents:

  • Los Angeles Rams
  • Arizona Cardinals
  • San Francisco 49ers
  • New Orleans Saints
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Houston Texans
  • Minnesota Vikings

Of these matchups, which team would you like to face the most to start Mike Macdonald’s second season? We know that divisional games are almost always tricky and the NFC West should be very competitive again this year. The New Orleans Saints are pretty bad and Derek Carr just retired, so they’re the “easy on paper” matchup.

Both the Buccaneers and Texans made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons and have a lot of offensive firepower, but Houston has a dangerous defense. Did you know they signed Darrell Taylor in free agency? I genuinely did not see that back in March.

The Colts... I mean they exist, right? We’ll see if it’s Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones as the starter. We know that Jones has no problem winning in Seattle even on a 3-14 team.

Then there’s the Minnesota Vikings, who effectively eliminated the Seahawks from playoff contention and ended the Geno Smith Era. The Lumen Field crowd was silent when Sam Darnold threw three touchdowns, including the game winner. Now they’ll gladly cheer him if he throws three TDs against his former team. Presumably the Vikings will have J.J. McCarthy making his NFL regular season debut by this point... but what if Sam Howell is called into action? Sam vs. Sam?!

Tell me who you want for Week 1! Or maybe you think the Seahawks will be on the road and I’m a dummy, in which case the road opponents are here.

Seahawks sign two rookie tryouts, waive veteran wide receiver

Arizona Cardinals v Seattle Seahawks

Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images

More roster shuffling for the Seahawks with OTAs looming.

The Seattle Seahawks made a few roster transactions on Monday, adding two players and letting go of one with an injury designation.

As previously reported, undrafted Kentucky rookie linebacker D’Eryk Jackson has turned his minicamp tryout into an NFL contract, but so has former Michigan State wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr.

Per the NFL transaction wire, the Seahawks moved on from ex-Miami Dolphins receiver and Washington State alum River Cracraft, who was waived with a non-football injury designation. It’s unclear what injury Cracraft is dealing with, although he did miss significant time with the Dolphins last season due to a shoulder problem.

Foster Jr, listed at 5’11 and 188 lbs, spent five seasons at Michigan State after not even playing football until his high school senior year. Over his final two seasons he saw a major uptick in production, catching a combined 89 passes for 1,164 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also has limited kick return experience and was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

How about watching some Foster highlights?

Before the doldrums of summer arrive, the NFL Schedule release on Wednesday will give fans something to talk about in the coming weeks.

The frenzy of free agency is in the distant past, the draft has been completed, and teams across the NFL have finished building out their 90-man rosters. There will certainly be tweaks and end of the roster churn for the Seattle Seahawks and the rest of the league between now and the beginning of training camp, but for now attention can turn to the schedule.

And this is NFL schedule release week, meaning that it’s time to track all the rumors, reports, leaks and general scuttlebutt regarding exactly when during the season the Seahawks will face specific opponents.

FanDuel odds

With the schedule rotation putting the NFC South and AFC South on the calendar for the NFC West this season, the Seahawks should have no problem exceeding the over/under of 7.5 wins currently offered at FanDuel Sportsbook.

However, even though the schedule should be rather soft this year, FanDuel Sportsbook currently has Seattle with the longest odds to win the division.

Seahawks bring the ‘Action’ in nostalgic 2025 schedule release video

Get your Kingdome Men’s Restroom Playset!

The NFL schedule release has become a major event in recent years because the NFL does a tremendous job of marketing every single thing it does as a major event. What it also provides is the opportunity for the social media teams to showcase their creativity with schedule release videos.

While the Los Angeles Chargers are seemingly the gold standard (and may be that again with their Minecraft-themed video), the Seahawks aren’t lacking cleverness and the abili

Wouldn’t you want a ‘Go Hawks’ action playset? Hyper Hawk! Tez Rex! Witherspoon! Super-sized Big Walt Jones! Bam Bam Kam’s Bam Bam Van! Marshawn and his baby stiff arm! Then there’s that Kingdome bathroom. I’m sure some of you who’ve been to the Kingdome understand that reference.

This is a two-minute parody of all of those action figure commercials you used to see over the decades. Maybe not spanning the full 50 years of the franchise’s existence, but a good chunk of it. You know what one of those decades was? The 1990s, and the San Francisco 49ers are out here “spewing 90s nostalgia.” Hyper Hawk puts a stop to that.

What do you think? Cringe? Well done? How do you like Spoon’s voice acting? Watch the video below and sound off in the comments.

State of the West: The post-draft NFC West power rankings

Seattle Seahawks v San Francisco 49ers

Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

With the NFL schedule is released, we power rank the NFC West teams.

One of the more exciting parts of the year for me as a NFL fan is the release of the schedule. I enjoy the Sherlock Holmes level of detective work to piece together as much of the schedule before it is officially released. Looking at that schedule for the first time also brings a true sense of optimism, arguably the most hopeful you’ll feel about your team at any point in the offseason.

The announcement of the 2025 NFL schedule also can play tricks on people’s vision of projections for how the season will unfold. Every good team’s schedule looks like 11 or 12 wins while the bad teams look like two four wins at best. The previous year’s team records, this year’s free agency, and draft additions can wildly change the fortunes of each team, for better or worse.

That’s why I wanted to give you my power rankings of the NFC West, and where I see the Seattle Seahawks standing, as we head into the second half of the offseason.

#4- Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals v Philadelphia Eagles
Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images

In my opinion, the NFC West could be one of, if not the tightest division race we’ll see all year. This could mean that 4th place still has you within a few games of a playoff spot or division title, but someone has to end up in this position, and I believe that will be Arizona.

The Cardinals made an impressive jump in 2024, improving from 4-13 to 8-9. At one point the Cardinals were 6-4 under coach Gannon, and in first place in the West. A brutal 2-5 finish, including ugly losses to the Seahawks, Panthers and Rams, left what was actually a promising season with a bitter ending.

The Cardinals had a pretty solid draft and free agency, where they added former Eagles pass rusher Josh Sweat and drafted Ole Miss DT Walter Nolen III to really beef up their D-line, but I still have my concerns about the offense. The O-line was better this year, and their offense finished 12th in scoring, but there just continues to be something off.

Kyler Murray is so talented, yet has such glaring flaws and you can always count on him to make three head scratching plays a game. Marvin Harrison Jr did not look much like the top pick we all assumed would be a day one star, although that could change in year two. Trey McBride is a star entering a contract year, but what does the running game look like if James Connor’s age and injuries catch up to him?

I think the Cardinals could be the best 4th place team in the NFL, but until I see this offense produce in November and December, I’m out.

#3 Los Angeles Rams

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles
Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images

The reigning division champs, and the team that gave the Super Bowl Champion Eagles their toughest playoff battle, check in at third place in my 2025 power rankings? This may be one of my bolder takes of the year. I have the Rams taking a noticeable step back.

The Rams were arguably one of the luckiest division winners in recent memory. With an expected win/loss of 8-9, and sitting at 5-6 on Dec 1 after letting Saquan Barkley run up through and around Los Angeles, the Rams felt cooked. Instead, they pulled off five straight wins (including a wild upset over the Buffalo Bills) that coincided with Seattle’s 2-2 finish that allowed the Rams to clinch the West, even with a regular season finale loss to Seattle.

The Rams offense finished 20th in scoring offense and 17th in scoring defense. Despite significant injuries and roster turnover, give Sean McVay credit for keeping his team in the hunt, and getting hot at the end. Were they fortunate? Yes, but that’s what happens when you have championship pedigree coaches and players still on the roster, and you draft the best defensive player in the draft in Jared Verse.

This offseason saw some real concerning trends however. There was real smoke to the rumors of Matthew Stafford being traded. Cooper Kupp, the heart and soul of the franchise, was cut and joined a certain division rival. Their biggest offseason addition, Davante Adams, hasn’t been the same player since 2022, and while their draft netted them a golden ticket (2026 first round pick from the stupid Falcons), I thought they added very little impact to their 2025 roster.

This team got older, lost part of its soul, and will have to deal with a first place schedule in 2025. I think that while the defense probably keeps them in that seven to nine win range, their offense will struggle again this season, and luck will not look so kindly on them.

#2 Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks v Los Angeles Rams
Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

Your Seahawks have a lot of questions and “what ifs” but there’s also a lot of momentum building for this ascending team. John Schneider and Mike Macdonald did not run it back with DK Metcalf and Geno Smith, instead creating present and future roster flexibility, some fascinating free agents to the roster, and as universally praised of a draft class in the history of Schneider’s run overseeing the Seahawks.

Seattle has created a clear path where they can win now, but also be set for the future. The defense under Macdonald should be the heart of the team. His defense finished 2024 ranked 11th in scoring defense, and would’ve easily been in the top 10 of the players didn’t take six weeks to get acclimated to the scheme. With the addition of DeMarcus Lawrence, and retention of all key pieces, it’s realistic to envision a second year jump that the Baltimore Ravens defense saw in year two under Mike. In his three seasons with Baltimore, the Ravens went from 19th in scoring defense, to 3rd and then 1st in 2023 (and one of the greatest DVOA rankings of all time). Don’t be surprised if the Seahawks have a top six defense this season.

Another reason that the defense could be legitimately Super Bowl good is if the offense isn’t a complete mess in 2025. If we’re being honest, the offense by Ryan Grubb and short yardage/red zone failures absolutely crushed a potential 12-win season in Seattle last year. While there is serious roster turnover, and the Sam Darnold question will likely decide their fate, I believe the combo of Darnold and new OC Klint Kubiak raised the floor of this offense to a wildcard expectation, with a real NFC Championship ceiling if Darnold, Kupp and an exciting draft class can all be considered hits.

#1 San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl LVIII - San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs
Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

I feel like Tom Cruise in the trailer for his final Mission Impossible movie. I am choosing to trust in the 49ers, one last time.

The last two times they have lost the Super Bowl, injuries ravaged their roster, and they end up with a high draft pick and a fourth place schedule. While I thought their draft spamming of defensive lineman was odd, I do think there’s potential for Mykel Williams to reach his full potential in Santa Clara.

The roster should be fully healthy by the early part of the season, and the return of Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator is arguably the biggest under the radar additions for any team this offseason. A fourth place schedule, and one that includes both the AFC and NFC South is prime 49ers rebound territory.

The biggest question will be if the offense can get healthy enough for one last hurrah. What do George Kittle (and his new massive extension) and Trent Williams have left in the tank? Are the injuries to Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Ayuik too severe for them to be relied upon in 2025?

Unfortunately I have a sneaky suspicion that the 49ers will be healthy, and will be the Super Bowl threat we all dread. If they do, at least we all know how that story will end, thanks Mahomes.

Seahawks 2025 draft: Predicting Grey Zabel’s rookie season

NFL Scouting Combine

Photo by Todd Rosenberg/Getty Images

An overview of Seattle’s first-round pick along with predictions for his rookie season.

In what’s becoming a recent first-round trend for the Seattle Seahawks, they stayed with their original pick at No. 18 and did something that many were pining for…they selected an interior offensive lineman! Well, technically Grey Zabel was an OT at North Dakota State, but he’ll be an OG in Seattle and will be expected to contribute immediately.

Athletic Profile/Comps

Relative Athletic Score (RAS)

Mockdraftable

Besides not having data for the 40-yard dash, the only real concern athletically for Zabel are short arms and a small wingspan, both of which will be mitigated with his move to interior OL.

Otherwise, he has excellent agility scores and an insane vertical with 36.50 inches at 312lbs!

The one comp that I want to call out is the last one on the RAS list, Will Fries.

Oh, so Zabel is a close match to the guy that the Seahawks were linked to in free agency? Weird.

Fries is a bit taller and performed slightly better in the broad jump and shuttle. Other than that, Zabel had him beat in every category. For everyone who thought that Fries would be a great fit in Klint Kubiak’s offensive system, Zabel has the chance to be just as effective at least from an athletic standpoint.

Gut reaction to the pick

I didn’t think Schneider would actually draft an interior OL without a trade back, but he got a little “jiggy” in his own words when Tyler Booker went off the board early to the Dallas Cowboys. Rather than lose out on Zabel, he stayed at No. 18 and took a huge step towards solidifying the Seahawks offensive line.

Now, there are some questions about Zabel, namely the level of competition coming from FCS North Dakota State.

However, Zabel was a standout at the Senior Bowl against future NFL players which had to give Schneider confidence that he will adjust to the NFL game just fine.

NDSU All-American OL Grey Zabel was my No. 1 standout at Senior Bowl practices ⭐

“Grey Zabel was the most consistent of any player, regardless of position, at the Senior Bowl. Had an excellent week.”
- Jordan Reid

— Hogg (@HoggNFL) January 31, 2025

Just like Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Byron Murphy, Grey Zabel was also the highest rated player at his position on Seattle’s draft board.

Mike MacDonald says he sees Grey Zabel as a guard right now, but loves that he can play all 5 spots on the o-line.

— Alyssa Charlston-Smith (@Alyssacharlston) April 25, 2025

Zabel both fills a need and has off-the-charts athleticism to go along with his farming background and high character. If you built someone in an offensive line factory, he probably looks like Grey Zabel.

I’m not sure what Grey Zabel’s nerves are currently but he was one relaxed-looking dude at his house in Pierre this afternoon. pic.twitter.com/4PqjVlRDUx

— Jeff Kolpack (@KolpackInForum) April 25, 2025

Rookie season prediction

Zabel will be given every opportunity to be the starter at one of the guard positions – probably LG with the departure of Laken Tomlinson. You don’t draft an offensive lineman that high and expect him to sit on the bench.

As a young lineman, he’ll have his struggles and probably get walked back into the QB a few times by powerful bull rushers. Zabel will play every snap in 2025 and improve by leaps and bounds throughout the year, putting him squarely in the conversation for the best Seahawks lineman by the end of the season. He’ll also continue ingratiating himself to the fanbase with his personality and crush a few pickle beers in his spare time.

Seahawks 2025 draft class: Jalen Milroe’s contract details

2025 NFL Draft - Rounds 2 & 3

Photo by Perry Knotts/Getty Images

See how much Jalen Milroe’s rookie contract will cost the Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks have almost completed signing their 2025 draft class, which notably includes former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, taken in the third round at No. 92 overall.

While not official, it looks as if Milroe has signed his first NFL contract based off of reporter Aaron Wilson’s contract breakdown. Those numbers are also on OverTheCap.com, so we might as well just get to business and look at Milroe’s rookie deal.

Jalen Milroe’s Seattle Seahawks contract

Base Salary

  • 2025: $840,000
  • 2026: $1,005,000
  • 2027: $1,120,000
  • 2028: $1,235,000

Signing Bonus

$1,195,700 evenly spread out at $298,925 per season through 2028.

Roster Bonus

  • 2025: N/A
  • 2026: $119,731
  • 2027: $289,462
  • 2028: $459,193

Salary Cap Number

  • 2025: $1,138,925
  • 2026: $1,423,656
  • 2027: $1,708,387
  • 2028: $1,993,118

None of Milroe’s salary is guaranteed and his cap numbers are just simply adding up his base salary, his signing bonus, and his roster bonus. Each roster bonus from 2026 through 2028 will trigger on the third day of training camp. The beauty of rookie contracts is that they’re not just inexpensive (especially deeper into the draft), they’re pretty straightforward.

The Seahawks will have Sam Darnold, Milroe, and Drew Lock combine for less than $17 million in cap number for the 2025 season. Milroe is the youngest, the cheapest, and certainly (outside of Sam Darnold sustaining and/or improving upon last season’s strong performance) the one fans hope has the highest upside of anyone on the team.

49ers give Brock Purdy his humongous payday

Seattle Seahawks v San Francisco 49ers

Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images

Mr. Irrelevant just got paid.

The last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft just became one of the highest paid players in the league.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has agreed to a five-year contract extension that averages out to a whopping $53 million per year, including north of $180 million in guaranteed money.

The #49ers and QB Brock Purdy agreed to terms on a five-year, $265 million contract extension, his agent Kyle Strongin of @RangeSports tells The Insiders.

Purdy gets $181M in total guarantees, including $165.05M in the first three new years of a deal that runs through 2030. pic.twitter.com/kX5EhkO0rl

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) May 16, 2025

We don’t have the full contract details yet and thus any potential outs, bonus and salary structure, etc. will be revealed, but his average annual value would put him in Jared Goff and Tua Tagovailoa territory. The top contract in terms of AAV is Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott’s $60 million/year.

For context of Purdy’s rise to this level of money, his base salary was less than $1 million in each of his first three seasons in the league, of which his 2023 campaign saw him in the MVP race and starting in the Super Bowl. Purdy did not have a particularly strong 2024 season, throwing for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while suffering his worst completion percentage and sack rates of his young career.

Purdy’s story is a personal triumph given he was ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ as the last pick of his draft class, but from a football standpoint things get a lot more interesting in Santa Clara. Is Purdy truly a franchise quarterback, and how will the 49ers’ roster construction look in the seasons to come now that they no longer have a starter whose salary is soon to skyrocket?

The Seattle Seahawks will host the newly paid Purdy and the 49ers in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season.

Why Damien Martinez is the Seahawks’ biggest steal in the 2025 draft

NCAA Football: Pop Tarts Bowl-Iowa State at Miami

Jasen Vinlove-Imagn Images

The former Oregon State and Miami running back fell to the seventh round, much to the benefit of the Seahawks. Let’s look at what makes Martinez a talented player.

Damien Martinez in the seventh round was arguably the Seattle Seahawks’ best value pick in the entire NFL Draft. Martinez was considered in the third or fourth round and fell into the Seahawks’ lap in the seventh round, for no apparent reason.

That doesn’t mean he was the team’s best pick, or that he’ll be an excellent player; he might not even make the roster. But, looking at the projections and where he actually ended up, he was the Seahawks’ best value pick.

In 2023, the Seahawks also selected a RB in the seventh round, Kenny McIntosh, who was considered to be going earlier and fell due to poor timing in the forty-yard dash. He ended up not having much room, but Martinez has a chance to do something different.

Who is Damien Martinez?

Damien Martinez, RB, RAS pic.twitter.com/dS8IGlbvMB

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 15, 2025

Damien Martinez started at Lewisville High School weighing 180 lbs. By his sophomore year he had gained weight to 215 lbs. and began to excel. He also excelled in track and field (sprints and relays) and set a personal best of 11.37 seconds in the 100 meters.

He arrived in college as a 3-star prospect, receiving offers from Kansas, Georgia Tech, San Diego State, and Texas State. Finally, he received an offer from Oregon State and developed a good relationship with head coach Jonathan Smith. In 2024, Smith left the Beavers to take over at Michigan State and that led Damien Martinez to enter the Transfer Portal, choosing Miami after visiting Arizona, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M.

The 21-year-old Martinez has received the following honors:

  • Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year (2022);
  • All-Pac-12 First Team; AP All-Pac-12 First Team; Doak Walker Award Semifinalist (2023);
  • All-ACC, Honorable Mention (2024);

In 38 games, he rushed for 3,169 yards and 26 TDs on 514 carries (6.2 average); he also had 32 receptions for 391 yards.

Comparison to former Seahawks

When Martinez was drafted and fans started watching his highlights, some started to relate him to a former Seahawks player, due to his physical style and tackle-breaking style. The comparisons were to Marshawn Lynch and I don’t think they’re fair. However, it is easy to compare him to another Seahawk, also chosen in the seventh round:

  • Chris Carson 6’0”, 218lbs, 4.58s in 40 yds, 37” vertical, 10’10” broad;
  • Damien Martinez 6’0”, 217lbs 4.51s in 40 yds35” vertical 10’4” broad;

Neither has elite top-speed, but both play with great physicality, break tackles and fight until the end of the play. It was a great shame that Chris Carson retired early.

Looking for connections with the University of Miami, we have more to see. In the recent past, we have chosen three RBs from Miami: Travis Homer (2019), DeeJay Dallas (2020) and now Martinez. Martinez was the lowest pick of the three and the one with the best potential with a large upside.

Him being available in the seventh round is basically a glitch in the Matrix

It’s not uncommon for what happened to Martinez to happen. A prospect projected to go early, to be left out for so long in the draft. Here are some fantastic numbers that support the thesis that he should go early:

  • Highest success rate on 3rd/4th down short in the FBS (93.8%);
  • Highest success rate when contacted behind the LOS in this class (30.0%);
  • 4.4 yards after contact, #2 in the class, behind only Ashton Jeanty;
  • 4.51 yards after contact per attempt, #2 in the class, behind only Ashton Jeanty, again;
  • Only 8.2% of his runs were stuffed, #1 in the class;
  • 6.7 YPC on runs between the tackles, #2 in the class;
  • 37% of his runs resulted in a first down, #3 in the class;

How does a player with such good numbers fall into the seventh round?

As mentioned, this is not uncommon. Some prospects fall out due to a history of injuries, advanced age, doubts about their fit with the NFL, personality issues, off-field issues, or poor numbers at a Combine or Pro Day.

The only thing I could find is that in 2023 he was suspended from the Bowl while still playing at Oregon State, at age 19. This raises a question for teams, but it would not justify him falling so far in the Draft, since the charges were not pursued. Several other players were drafted early on more serious charges.

He was suspended on November 30, 2023, one day after being arrested in Corvallis, Oregon, on suspicion of driving under the influence. But the Benton County District Attorney opted not to file charges against the sophomore from Lewisville, Texas.

“Due to the District Attorney’s decision not to file DUI or similar charges against Damien Martinez, he will be eligible to participate in the upcoming Bowl game,” Oregon State University athletic director Scott Barnes said in a statement.

On Nov. 29, Corvallis police pulled over 19-year-old Martinez for allegedly running a red light and charged him with DUI and reckless driving. Martinez was also cited for possession of marijuana as a minor, since he was under 21. He acknowledged the arrest in a post on X, writing that he “made a mistake.”

Great addition to the running game

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 15, 2025

He brings the No. 20 to the A gap on the right side of the offense and leaves him at an angle for his center to block. With that, he makes the cut to the left and gets a good run.

Patient. Waits to his OL (#73) get the right angle to block the LB pic.twitter.com/WugPjvvhXM

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 15, 2025

The RB also needs to help his OL. Note that if Martinez were more aggressive in his run, the OL would not be able to get to block the defender. Martinez waits and allows the OL to have a good angle and open the way for his run. He also finishes the play with physicality towards the safety.

Doesn’t offer much as a third-down RB

Damien Martinez, RB, #6

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 15, 2025

He has good hands, but he doesn’t have much experience running routes and this reflects in his production (lack thereof). The RB only had 32 receptions, 391 passing yards and no receiving TDs.

Final Thoughts

As a pure runner, Martinez would easily beat Kenny McIntosh on the depth chart. With Kenneth Walker struggling to stay healthy and entering the final year of his contract, the team has brought in a replacement with a lot of potential.

Martinez has plenty of experience in both gap and zone schemes. Despite not having much speed, he is a tackle-breaking machine and has an elusiveness rarely seen in someone his size.

What could count against him is the fact that he is not a good pass protector. This could mean he doesn’t have many chances on third downs. Another point is that he didn’t play on special teams in college. Experience in this third phase of the game can be a big difference-maker in deciding who stays and who goes, and the key for rookies is to be able to stay on the roster.

Let’s chat: Which Seahawks regular season game are you looking forward to the most?

NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks

Steven Bisig-Imagn Images

Let’s talk some more about the Seahawks’ 2025 schedule!

Now that we know the order of the Seattle Seahawks’ 2025 regular season schedule, win-loss predictions (including on Field Gulls) are in full force, tickets are being purchased, hotel rooms and flights are being booked, and excuses for not showing up to work the next day are being prepped.

This weekend’s discussion is all about your most anticipated matchups on the docket. I specified regular season in the headline because I know a few of you will correctly write “Super Bowl” in the comments, so I’ve narrowed it just a tad.

The San Francisco 49ers home opener should not only be electric but an early litmus test to see if the Lumen Field stands will once again be heavily occupied by 49ers fans. That’s not totally new considering the number of Californians who live in Seattle and the ease of travel, but it hits different when the Seahawks aren’t winning these home games.

Then there’s the possible DK Metcalf revenge game in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, whose current starting quarterback appears to be Mason Rudolph. We shan’t dare question Rudolph’s powers given what happened in 2023, but perhaps Mike Macdonald’s defense won’t experience the same fate as several of Pete Carroll’s defenses.

On the topic of former Seahawks, I know the Tennessee Titans may not be projected to be a good team, but the Week 12 trip to Nashville means going up against No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, who should be throwing it to Seahawks legend Tyler Lockett. It’s going to feel just as weird seeing Lockett in a Titans uniform as Metcalf in a Steelers uni.

You’ve also got two prime time games on either side of the Week 8 bye, with the Seahawks hosting the Houston Texans on a Monday night and traveling cross-country to face the Washington Commanders on a Sunday night post-bye. Both the Texans and Commanders were playoff teams and will be popular playoff picks again this season... and perhaps a Super Bowl pick for Washington.

One game I’d keep an eye on from an entertainment value perspective is Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker Mayfield had a high-powered offense last season but once again lost an offensive coordinator to an NFL head coaching job. Tampa’s offense is loaded but its defense... is just not good. This has shootout potential if the Seahawks defense doesn’t bring its best.

My biggest surprise is the fact that the Minnesota Vikings game in Week 13 was not selected for even a late doubleheader slot. It’s just a 1:05 pm PT kickoff which normally means a lower regional distribution. Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 record and that would’ve been a No. 1 seed most years! Surely that deserved some more play? And last year’s game in which Darnold outdueled Geno Smith was a really fun (if devastating for us) contest.

Lastly, Week 16 on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams. A reminder that all of the Seahawks’ division titles since 2010 have involved clinching at home against the Rams. Just something to think about...

Seahawks 2025 draft film review: Will Bryce Cabeldue earn a spot at guard?

NCAA Football: Kansas at Arizona State

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The sixth-rounder from Kansas has impressive athletic traits, but will that translate into a spot on the Seahawks as a guard?

The Seattle Seahawks drafted 11 players this year, five of which we know had official pre-draft visits. Nick Emmanwori, Jalen Milroe, Rylie Mills, Tory Horton and finally, Bryce Cabeldue. The Kansas OL has a lot of experience with 50 starts and excellent athletic potential.

Will he be able to compete for the guard spot?

Who is Bryce Cabeldue?

Cabeldue played in high school as a defensive end and left tackle, earning all-state honors on both sides of the ball. He also played basketball and baseball before becoming a 3-star recruit. Most of the offers he received were from Division II. He even received offers to play basketball as well. His best offer until 2020 was an offer from Texas State. Then, he received his only Power-5 offer, committing to Kansas and adding 60 pounds to his 240-pound frame coming out of high school.

He was a four-year starter for the Jayhawks in over 50 games. He played most of his games as a defensive tackle until he was moved to left tackle after Dominic Puni was drafted by the 49ers last year. In 2024, he allowed three sacks and eight pressures in 344 pass-blocking snaps.

Bryce Cabeldue played just five snaps at guard in college, but says his measurements and performance in the East-West Shrine Game have led teams to consider him as a guard. He says that’s all he’s been practicing this offseason and that he feels “pretty comfortable playing guard right now.”

Athleticism

Bryce Cabeldue, OG, RAS pic.twitter.com/IzGpFefTHX

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 14, 2025

Bryce Cabeldue was the fourth-most explosive player among all offensive linemen in the draft. He wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but he did participate in the Big-12 Pro Day, an event with important teams from the Conference, and he was clearly the best player there.

  • 85th percentile 10-yd split with 1.73s;
  • 96th percentile 40-yd dash;
  • 80th percentile shuttle;
  • 61st percentile 3-cone;
  • 82nd percentile vertical;
  • 94th percentile broad;
  • 76th percentile bench;

In addition to drawing attention at the Big-12 Pro Day, he had an excellent week at the Shrine Bowl. He was one of the highlights of the practices and games.

— Alexandre Castro (@alexcastrofilho) May 15, 2025

He’ll face a lot of Seahawks roster competition

Let’s be honest, the Left Guard position is already held by Grey Zabel. So, all that’s left is to fight for the right side of the line, and there’s a lot of competition there.

  • Anthony Bradford, was a starter even though he was questioned by the fans;
  • Sataoa Laumea, who took over the starting job when Bradford was placed on IR;
  • Christian Haynes, a third-round pick who failed to start as a rookie but has high hopes in the new wide-zone scheme;
  • Josh Jones could still be an option because of his versatility as a G/T;

Could the Seahawks try to move Haynes to center? Would the team be willing to part with Bradford? The likely answer to both questions would be no. That doesn’t help Cabeldue’s case for a starting spot.

Excellent fit for the running game

This is one of the hardest blocks to make. It’s basically a reach block at the second level. Cabeldue has the mobility and good angle to beat the LB and make the play happen.

He puts too much weight on his outside foot at times. This ends up being an invitation for pass rushers to attack the inside gap. And

Final Thoughts

His first challenge will be making the roster. As I said above, there will be a lot of competition for the guard spots. I don’t think he has the potential to play center, but his history as an OT can help in an emergency, even if his role in the NFL is really guard, which also helps to eliminate his main weaknesses such as short arms and overcommitting to the outside gap.

To draw a parallel, the Seahawks drafted Sataoa Laumea last year in the sixth round as well. I think Cabeldue comes in with a higher floor and more potential for the future. He was a player who could have left at the end of the fourth round and the Seahawks got him in the sixth.

At worst, the Seahawks got a high-level backup; at best, he could become a solid starter. The big question is that for that to happen, someone will have to leave.

Seahawks 2025 preseason kickoff times, dates revealed

NFL: AUG 26 Preseason - Seahawks at Packers

Photo by Larry Radloff/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

We’re less than three months out from the Seahawks’ preseason opener.

Circle your calendars some more, Seattle Seahawks fans!

I might have lied when I said we were chilling a bit on schedule-related content, but that’s only because I forgot that the preseason dates hadn’t yet been announced. Cross that off the checklist of things to pay attention to.

The 2025 preseason starts with a home game against Pete Carroll and Geno Smith’s Las Vegas Raiders. With the Seattle Mariners home all week, scheduling is a little trickier. This is a Thursday night kickoff on Aug. 7, with the Mariners playing the Chicago White Sox in a day game. The Seahawks follow it up with a Friday night home date versus the Kansas City Chiefs. The lone road game is the finale on Aug. 23 at the Green Bay Packers at an early start time of 1 pm PT.

Seattle Seahawks 2025 Preseason (all times PT)

  • Week 1 (Thu, Aug. 7): vs. Las Vegas Raiders, 7:00 p.m., KING 5
  • Week 2 (Fri, Aug. 15): vs. Kansas City Chiefs, August 15, 7:00 p.m., KING 5
  • Week 3 (Sat, Aug. 23): at Green Bay Packers, August 23, 1:00 p.m., KING 5

These games could be picked up by NFL Network for out-of-market viewing, so watch out for announcements on that front very soon.

If you live outside of Seattle but within the Seahawks Television Network coverage map, you can check out this link to find which affiliates will broadcast Seahawks preseason games.

Seahawks add another rookie wide receiver to roster

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 02 North Carolina at Florida State

Photo by Chris Leduc/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Nate McCollum split his collegiate time between Georgia Tech and North Carolina.

The Seattle Seahawks have tinkered with their roster one week out from the start of Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

On Tuesday the team announced the signing of wide receiver Nate McCollum, an undrafted free agent who played his college football at North Carolina and Georgia Tech. To make room on the 90-man roster, Seattle waived guard Sala Aumavae-Laulu, who was signed to a reserve/future contract back in February.

McCollum caught 143 passes for 1,521 yards and five touchdowns in college. He also rushed for two touchdowns and returned kickoffs as a North Carolina senior and punts as a redshirt sophomore at Georgia Tech. Based on his pro day measurements he’s listed at 5’8 and 184 lbs with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash.

After going undrafted last month, McCollum was part of rookie minicamp with the New York Giants but obviously didn’t go beyond that.

We’re at the part of offseason where there will be significant roster turnover at the bottom of the depth chart during OTAs and minicamp, so there should be no expectations for McCollum outside of being a camp body. It’s an extremely uphill battle for him to be on the regular season roster outside of any special teams value. Still, you might be interested in McCollum’s skill set, so let’s watch his highlight package!

This will be two years in a row that the Seahawks have joint practices.

The Seattle Seahawks will once again conduct joint practices this preseason.

The Athletic reports that the Green Bay Packers will host practices with the Seahawks in Green Bay before their week three preseason game on August 23rd.

Packers will have joint practices with the Colts in Indy and Seahawks in Green Bay this summer, per source. Those sessions will precede second and third preseason games.

Last season the Seahawks had their first joint practices in over three decades when they conducted these with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans went on to win that preseason game 16-15. Under Pete Carroll, joint practices were never considered. There were Seahawks fans who were hoping that Carroll might change his tune on joint practices this season, and that he and the Las Vegas Raiders would join the Seahawks this offseason. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

However, with the Packers now hosting the Seahawks, that will make two years in a row under head coach Mike Macdonald that the Seahawks will have a scrimmage against another NFL team. When asked last year about joint practices, Coach Macdonald stated that these practices can be very beneficial to the team.

“Really it’s an opportunity to put it in a setting where you can control the tempos, control the drills, get some high intensity for the guys so they’re ready to roll come the opener time,” Macdonald said. “And it’s just easier to control them than true game reps. Still working through who is going to play in the preseason and for how much, but a great opportunity if you do it the right way to get some really good competition in and sharpen each other and try to get ready for the regular season.”
