Former Seahawks DT Brandon Mebane assigns blame to Super Bowl XLIX interception

It is Super Bowl Sunday, which unfortunately, means Seattle Seahawks fans are forever condemned to relive one of the most iconic moments in Super Bowl history… which is simultaneously the single most painful memory in the entire history of Seattle sports: Russell Wilson throwing an interception at the goal line to Malcolm Butler to lose Super Bowl XLIX.

A decade later, this play still haunts the Pacific Northwest, and forever will. Yet with each passing year, we learn more and more about that fateful moment. Former Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, who was on the sideline when the incident-in-question occurred, recently spoke about it to KIRO’s own Gee Scott on his radio program.

Mebane recalls seeing former Seahawks backup Tavaris Jackson reacting to the play call.

“So Tarvaris Jackson — I’m kind of not near him, but I can see him — has an earpiece in his ear, and they call the play. Tavaris Jackson says, ‘Nooo! Don’t run that play.’ He turns his back and walks up the sideline away from the play. And I’m like, ‘Where is he going, and why did he say don’t run that play?’ But he said don’t run that play. He walks back, and then they ran the play. And you know what happened after that.”

Initial reaction would certainly suggest blame lies at the hands of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who called the play. This is the position running back Marshawn Lynch certainly has.

However, Mebane appears to be offering a new explanation. While Bevell may have made the play call, clearly, there were audibles quarterback Russell Wilson was empowered to make at the line. This is what Mebane is alleging in his recent interview, that Wilson himself made the ultimate decision to throw the ball at the goal line.

“Russell pops up and said, ‘Man, they was in goal line (formation), that’s why I threw the ball.'” Mebane declared. “I said, ‘Oh, OK,’ and then I walked off. So, pretty much, Russell changed the play. It was one play. Russell changed the play to that play and then what happened happened.”

The play will live on in infamy, a memory the 12th Man will forever be cursed to relive (in some capacity) each February. As far as I can remember, this is the first time I recall a former teammate directly calling out Wilson with sole-ownership of the interception.

In the end, we may never know who is truly to blame, or if there even is one singular reason why it happened. What we do know is it ended the championship aspirations of the Legion of Boom, as the Seahawks have still yet to return to even the NFC Championship game… let alone the Super Bowl.

“I think about how close we were to winning the second one,” Mebane reminisces. “And I think we could have went to three. I think we could have gone to one in 2012 if (OLB) Chris Clemens didn’t get hurt. I think we’d have had a great opportunity to play in that Super Bowl.”

Seahawks like to approach Geno Smith's contract this offseason

The Seattle Seahawks need to figure out what they are going to do with quarterback Geno Smith, who is entering the final year of his current contract. Head coach Mike Macdonald has been repeatedly on the record – including recently – that he wants Geno Smith back in Seattle for the 2025 season. As it stands, it appears the team will be making this a priority this offseason.

NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero are reporting the Seahawks will likely address Smith’s contract this offseason. As it stands, Smith will be headed into the final year of his current contract.

The #Seahawks and Geno Smith contract extension seems to be ramping up:

Rapoport and Pelissero wrote:

The Seahawks have said nothing to dissuade the impression they’re all-in on Geno Smith, who is entering a contract year at age 34 and is set to have his third offensive coordinator in three seasons. Seattle likely will address his deal, which is set to pay him $25 million in 2025, putting him at the lower end of the veteran starter pay scale.

I understand fully the frustrations some fans have with Smith, specifically his interceptions… notably in the red zone. However, Smith is still a clear-cut starting caliber quarterback in the NFL. If you believe the Seahawks can do better than him for 2025, I would merely ask this:

Who is out there that is both better than Geno Smith, and available to obtain?

It seems Seattle has asked both of these questions, and the answers they are finding keep leading them back to Smith.

Way too early ESPN power rankings have Seahawks at No. 15

The 2024 season officially concluded with the Philadelphia Eagles’ complete dismantling of the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl LIX. Which means it is now officially time to start focusing on the 2025 season! As 31 other fanbases got to watch Philly hoist the Lombardi on Sunday night, the itch to want to see their team do something similar next year in Santa Clara grew.

As such, ESPN is already giving everyone a taste of what is yet to come, with their “way too early” power rankings for 2025. ESPN did not just have power rankings for the league, they also asked their local writers covering each team to come up with three words to describe the team’s offseason goals. Clearly, all but one team this year ended their season without winning it all, so improvement is an obvious goal for all. But how to achieve it?

The Seahawks are squarely in the middle of these rankings at No. 15 overall, which seems fair. At times in 2024, Seattle looked like a cohesive unit that threatened to win the NFC West. But for the majority of the year, they showed plenty of reasons why they were not a playoff caliber team. A lot of growth must be made, yet the Seahawks will have to get creative with how they do it.

ESPN’s Brady Henderson chose these three words to describe Seattle’s offseason: “whom to pay?”

“Fifteen of their starters are either pending free agents (Ernest Jones IV, Jarran Reed, Laken Tomlinson), veterans who will want new deals (Geno Smith, DK Metcalf), 2022 draft picks who are eligible for extensions (Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Kenneth Walker III, Abraham Lucas, Coby Bryant, Riq Woolen) or highly paid players who could conceivably be cut (Dre’Mont Jones, Tyler Lockett, Uchenna Nwosu, Noah Fant).”

The Seahawks are still $14ish million over the cap, even with freeing up an additional $14 million by restructuring Leonard Williams’ contract. Henderson is accurate in his assessment that finding a way to create the best team for 2025 will be more challenging than usual, given Seattle’s cap situation.

Whatever decisions the team will have to make, there are two clear priorities: signing linebacker Ernest Jones IV and giving quarterback Geno Smith an extension.

Seahawks will make Uchenna Nwosu decision this week

The Seattle Seahawks are currently scheduled to be $13.4 million over the 2025 salary cap, according to Over The Cap. That’s even after the team restructured Leonard Williams’ contract last week. General manager John Schneider must continue finding creative ways to get his Seahawks cap compliant before the new league year marks its arrival (March 12).

Releasing veteran players is one surefire way to create financial flexibility. One potential casualty is EDGE Uchenna Nwosu. Injuries have consistently prevented Nwosu from meeting the expectations of his three-year, $45 million contract. The pass rusher has appeared in just six games in consecutive seasons due to recurring injuries and setbacks.

If the Seahawks are going to release Nwosu, that decision could arrive before Friday (Feb. 14). Roughly $6 million of Nwosu’s $14.8 million base salary for 2025 becomes guaranteed on that deadline, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. That injury guarantee will convert to a full guarantee if he remains on Seattle’s roster on 2/14.

More on this:

Of Nwosu’s $14.8M base salary for ’25, $6M is currently guaranteed for injury only. If he’s still on the roster Feb. 14, the $6M becomes fully guaranteed. So if he’s going to be cut, that’s a natural deadline. And it is 2/14, per a copy of the contract I obtained. https://t.co/JCWuhSwxpz

— Brady Henderson (@BradyHenderson) February 7, 2025

The Seahawks have invested significant capital at pass rusher in recent years. They drafted Boye Mafe and Derick Hall in consecutive drafts. Both Mafe and Hall developed nicely in 2024. Dre’Mont Jones is also playing a full-time edge rushing position. Mike Macdonald’s defense is well prepared to part ways with Nwosu.

The Seahawks could save $14.6 million against the cap by designating Nwosu as a post-June cut, which would also lower the dead cap charge to $6.5 million.

Mike Macdonald and Klint Kubiak discuss DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett

There are no shortages of challenges the Seattle Seahawks are facing this offseason as they prepare to build the best possible team they can for 2025. They are roughly $14 million over the salary cap, and have 15 starters who are either impending free agents or eligible for a new contract.

The biggest question mark this offseason obviously revolves around quarterback Geno Smith, despite constant praise from his head coach and offensive coordinator. But we shouldn’t overlook wondering about the futures for wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

During Klint Kubiak’s introductory press conference, the subject of both receivers came up. Despite there being fans (and certain media members) who believe the Seahawks should trade DK Metcalf, the Seahawks keep making it clear they have no intention to do so.

Asked new #Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak how he’s going to maximize DK Metcalf.

“A lot to work with. His physical presence…”

Mike Macdonald said that was “at the top of their mind” to every OC candidate, and “Klint has the best idea” how to max 14. pic.twitter.com/Y33WoPz2J7

— Gregg Bell (@gbellseattle) February 11, 2025

Seattle announced during the 2024 season they would not trade Metcalf before the deadline, and it appears he is still fully in their plans for 2025.

As for Tyler Lockett, well, that’s a different story. It is widely expected Lockett will not be a Seahawk in 2025. Given his age, his declining production, and a $30 million cap hit for the coming year, all signs seem to point to Lockett’s tenure in Seattle coming to a conclusion. However, Coach Macdonald is remaining tight-lipped for now on Lockett’s future.

Macdonald on Tyler Lockett future with team: “We’re working through that right now. Those decisions will come in the next month or two.” #Seahawks

Seahawks to interview another Saints assistant coach

It appears newly minted Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is getting the band back together. On the day Kubiak was officially introduced as Seattle’s new man in charge of the offense, the Seahawks also announced three new hires to his staff: John Benton as the new o-line coach, Andrew Janocko as the quarterbacks coach, and Michael Byrne as an offensive assistant. All three coaches were on Kubiak’s staff in New Orleans last season.

Now, they could be adding one more to the mix. On Wednesday it was reported by NFL Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo have permission to speak with Saints offensive assistant Rick Dennison. Rapoport and Garafolo seem positive that the possibility of Dennison joining Kubiak’s staff is highly likely.

The #Saints have given permission for Senior Offensive Assistant Rick Dennison to speak to the #Seahawks, per me and @MikeGarafolo.

Dennison, a respected assistant, came to New Orleans with Klint Kubiak and is expected to join him in Seattle if the sides can find a deal now… pic.twitter.com/np81GvjtN1

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 12, 2025

Kubiak continues to fill his staff with veteran experience. Dennison has been around this league since he was a player dating back to 1980, and his coaching career began in 1995 as an offensive assistant. Dennison is a three-time Super Bowl champion, all with the Denver Broncos.

There is also an obvious connection between Dennison and the Kubiak family. Klint’s father, Gary Kubiak, employed Dennison as his offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos, which helped claim victory in Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers. Dennison was also the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterbacks coach in 2014 when Gary Kubiak was their offensive coordinator, and he was on staff with the Minnesota Vikings while both Gary and Klint were coaches there as well.

To say Klint Kubiak is familiar with what Dennison brings to the table would be quite the understatement!

3 iOL Seahawks could target on Day 2 of 2025 NFL Draft

The Seattle Seahawks need to address the interior of their struggling offensive line this offseason. While many expect them to do that at No. 18 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, head coach Mike Macdonald and new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak discussed prioritizing in-house improvement at the position earlier this week.

That creates the possibility that the Seahawks won’t feel forced to utilize their first-round selection. General manager John Schneider is also equipped with Nos. 50 and 82 in the second and third rounds. In case the Seahawks target an interior lineman on Day Two, we’ve identified three potential options.

Jonah Savaiinaea, Arizona

Jonah Savaiinaea played offensive tackle at Arizona, but pro scouts are treating him like a guard throughout the pre-draft process. Savaiinaea possesses overwhelming power as a phone-booth blocker with raw strength. He’d be plug-and-play at left guard, replacing Laken Tomlinson.

Wyatt Milum, West Virginia

Wyatt Milum is another tackle-turned-guard projection. Milum is significantly more athletic, potentially making him an outstanding for Kubiak’s preferred zone-blocking scheme. The Mountaineers standout showcased daily improvement at the Senior Bowl, and should test well at the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine.

Grey Zabel, North Dakota State

Grey Zabel is a big-time riser after a dominant Senior Bowl showing. Zabel’s best position at the next level might be center, where he’d compete with Olu Oluwatimi for a starting role in Kubiak’s new-look offense. He’s established himself as a top 50 overall selection.

Watch: Coby Bryant 2024 highlights

One of the most positive developments from the Seattle Seahawks’ 2024 season was the emergence of Coby Bryant as a viable safety for this team. Bryant took the starting reigns this year and never looked back. The fourth round pick from the 2022 NFL draft had his breakout year, and has the Seahawks set up nicely at the safety position alongside Pro Bowler Julian Love.

It is always a good time to take a trip down (recent) memory lane and appreciate highlights. Specifically, all three of Bryant’s interceptions this year. In fact, all three interceptions snagged by Bryant were all the first three of his career!

Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon on Marvin Harrison Jr: "I don't think he's that hard to guard"

The offseason does not mean we stop talking about football, nor does it mean players stop talking about division rivals. Such is the case for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon. A case can certainly be made that the two-time Pro Bowl defensive back is arguably Seattle’s best defender, and just like another former Seahawks cornerback, Witherspoon certainly isn’t afraid to talk a big game… even when it’s against other talented receivers in the NFC West.

Witherspoon, and fellow 2023 NFL draft classmate Jaxon Smith-Njigba, were speaking with Pro Football Focus’ Mike Florio and Chris Simms prior to Super Bowl LIX. Witherspoon certainly did not hold back on what he had to say about Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

pic.twitter.com/II35Brp25R

— Bo Brack (@BoBrack) February 14, 2025

While I’m sure Jaxon Smith-Njigba wasn’t thrilled about Witherspoon discussing his former Buckeye teammate like this, Witherspoon did offer plenty of praise to another former Ohio State receiver in Garrett Wilson.

However, perhaps Witherspoon does have a point to make. In his only two career games against the Seahawks thus far, “Maserati Marv” has looked anything but. He hauled in only seven of 14 passes tossed his way for 95 total yards and no scores. Not pedestrian, but certainly not super star caliber outings to torch Seattle.

I am sure, like the tweet above suggests, Harrison Jr. heard those words and will certainly be eager to put Witherspoon’s comments to the test. However, I am equally sure Witherspoon won’t waste any time this offseason working to cash the checks his mouth wrote on the field the next time these teams square off.

The Seahawks wide receiver, in his second season in the league, had a career year. JSN built upon his rookie campaign and emerged as a legitimate star in this league in 2024. JSN hauled in 100 receptions (tying Tyler Lockett for most in a single season in Seattle history) for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns.

All were personal best numbers.

I know I speak for all the 12’s when I say I for one cannot wait to see what JSN has in store for year three, especially under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.

Seahawks select Geno Smith's successor in PFF's 7-round 2025 NFL mock draft

Pro Football Focus recently released a seven-round Seattle Seahawks 2025 NFL mock draft. In the most shocking selection, the Seahawks select Geno Smith’s eventual successor, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, at No. 18 overall. We’ll take you on a round-by-round journey to grade PFF’s latest seven-round exercise.

Round 1 (No. 18): Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss

It’d be surprising if the Seahawks drafted a quarterback in the first round. Geno Smith is expected to sign an extension this offseason. A successor is eventually needed, and Jaxson Dart is (for some reason) receiving first-round buzz around the league. Drafting a quarterback at No. 18 wouldn’t help the 10-7 Seahawks increase their chances to compete in 2025.

Round 2 (No. 50): Jordan Burch, EDGE, Oregon

The Seahawks believe in pouring resources into the EDGE position. Uchenna Nwosu is a potential cap casualty this offseason. Jordan Burch is long and powerful, and would join Boye Mafe and Derick Hall in an effective rotation.

Round 3 (No. 82): Barrett Carter, LB, Clemson

John Schneider is dealing with some question marks at off-ball linebacker. Will he manage to re-sign Ernest Jones IV, who is due a sizable raise in pay? Barrett Carter is an athletic linebacker prospect with chops in pass coverage.

Round 4 (No. 136): Luke Kandra, iOL, Cincinnati

It’s surprising to see the Seahawks wait so long to address the interior offensive line. Luke Kandra is a technically-refined blocker who projects more as a long-term backup than above-average starter. Kandra possesses a high football I.Q., identifying twists and stunts in pass protection at a high level.

Round 5 (No. 173): Upton Stout, S, Western Kentucky

Upton Stout is an undersized playmaker who plays bigger than his measurements. Stout is alignment-versatile, playing everywhere in the defensive backfield. He was very impressive at this year’s Senior Bowl.

Round 6 (No. 185): Fadil Diggs, EDGE, Syracuse

The Seahawks could double-down at EDGE. Fadil Diggs is a three-down lineman with run-stopping capabilities. Diggs is long and strong, having recently displayed that skill set at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl.

Round 6 (No. 212): Jailin Walker, LB, Indiana

Jailin Walker could be a special teams ace at the next level. Second-year coordinator Jay Harbaugh would appreciate more of those types. Walker is a bit undersized, but enters the draft after being historically productive for the Indiana Hoosiers.

Round 7 (No. 236): Drew Dalman, C, Boston College

The Seahawks should draft at least two interior offensive lineman. Drew Dalman played center at Boston College. They need competition for Olu Oluwatimi at center, but they should invest a more premium resource into an important position in Klint Kubiak’s offense.

Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba clears the air on Shane Waldon... sorta

A little over a year ago at this time, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba gave an incredibly awkward response when asked about former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron by a Chicago Bears podcast. By no means did JSN say anything cruel or hurtful, but the extended silence in response to asking him about Waldron was certainly noticeable.

Fast forward 12 months, almost to the day, and JSN offered some clarity towards his comments… sort of. Appearing on a new podcast hosted by former teammate Laviska Shenault Jr., JSN gave some time to explain how he was a little caught off guard by the question, as his mind was all over the place following several media appearances in Las Vegas during Super Bowl week, and was not expecting a question about Shane Waldron.

JSN says he did not mean any disrespect towards Waldron. However, another period of awkward silence did occur once more on the topic.

WOAH:#Seahawks Jaxon Smith-Njigba said this about former Seattle OC Shane Waldron:

“I really thought he was a good offensive coordinator…. [pauses and giggles].”

I know JSN’s heart is in the right place. He is a good dude and I believe him when he says he means no disrespect. I can also assume he probably did not fully enjoy the time spent playing in Waldron’s system. And who can blame him? I mean, just look at the leap he took from year one under Waldon to year two under Grubb (a coach who is now no longer in the NFL)

  • Targets: 93 in 2023 to 137 in 2024
  • Receptions: 63 in 2023 to 100 in 2024 (tied a franchise record)
  • Receiving yards: 628 in 2023 to 1,130 in 2024
  • Touchdowns: 4 in 2024 and 6 in 2024

By no means were those numbers bad for a rookie, in a vacuum, but they were hardly eye-popping stats you’d expect from the first wide receiver selected in the 2023 NFL draft. The fact JSN was able to explode in year two the way he did can be, at least in part, attributed to an offensive coordinator better suited at incorporating his skillset into the offense.

NFL draft watch: Heisman winner Travis Hunter listed as DB for combine

With the Super Bowl concluded and the 2024 NFL season officially in the books, all focus now shifts to the team building phase of the year… specifically the 2025 NFL draft. First on the docket will be the annual scouting combine in Indianapolis, IN. The combine is fast approaching, and will be held from February 24th through March 3rd.

One of the biggest names to watch will be the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter. The two-way star impressed fans at the University of Colorado, doing something rarely seen in this day and age. However, for the scouting combine, Hunter is officially classifying himself as a defensive back.

Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner who played offense and defense at Colorado, is being listed as a defensive back for the NFL scouting combine.https://t.co/37dQYHOeWJ

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 14, 2025

During his two years at Colorado as a defensive back, Hunter recorded 66 total tackles, defended 16 passes and snagged away seven interceptions. But with Hunter, his unique skillset will surely have some teams finding a way to incorporate him on offense as well… and why wouldn’t they? In 2024 as a receiver, Hunter hauled in 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Of course, this naturally becomes the part of the article where we begin to speculate about the possibilities of Hunter becoming a Seahawk. Unfortunately, with Seattle picking at No. 18 overall, it is not all that likely. Currently, Hunter is ESPN’s No. 3 overall prospect in the 2025 NFL draft. While there is a lot that can happen between now and when the draft actually begins, it is hard to imagine Hunter falling at least 15 spaces before a team ahead of the Seahawks decides they want to take a chance on one of the more uniquely talented prospects available.

Still, it is fun to imagine what Hunter could do for the Seahawks, especially in the secondary. Even though Seattle has Devon Witherspoon and Tariq Woolen in the secondary, I do believe one of the more underrated needs on this defense is depth at corner.

Interesting DK Metcalf stat compared to Cooper Kupp and Deebo Samuel

When it comes to the Seattle Seahawks, the player that divides fans the most is none other than quarterback Geno Smith. As the quarterback, obviously he will drive the most conversation. But behind Smith in this “category” of division is wide receiver DK Metcalf. Despite being a generational athlete, there are fans who wonder if the team wouldn’t be better off without him. They wonder if his occasional emotional outbursts or issues with fumbling the ball at times are holding this offense back.

To them, they wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze.

Then there are the rest of fans who aren’t bothered by any of that, because they see what Metcalf brings to the field. Those are the fans who are correct in this instance.

To those who question if the Seahawks should move on from Metcalf, let me mention two wide receivers everyone who watches football will agree are great at what they do: Cooper Kupp and Deebo Samuel. Kupp, the Eastern Washington star who became the MVP of Super Bowl LVI, and Samuel, a dynamic athlete who can be found anywhere on the field. Simply two stars who receive plenty of well-deserved praise.

Here’s the thing about those two: DK Metcalf has more 1,000+ yard seasons than either of them… combined. Metcalf is also younger than both.

After hauling in 1,947 yards in 2021, Kupp has not had more than 812 in a season, and the totals have been going down each year since. Kupp has also only eclipsed the 900 yard mark three times. As for Samuel, he’s only had one 1,000+ yard season, with his next two best receiving total years resulting in still less than 900 yards.

Meanwhile, Metcalf has never had less than 900 yards in a season… his lowest yardage output, which came in his rookie season. Since then he’s had three 1,000+ yard seasons, one with 967 yards and last year with 992 yards. Keep in mind Metcalf also missed two games during the 2024 season. Impossible to imagine he wouldn’t have been able to get at least eight yards in those two games had he played.

I stuck my flag firmly in the ground of “the Seahawks should not trade DK Metcalf” last year, and I’m still proudly standing there. I said it then, I’ll say it now, and I will keep saying it:

DK Metcalf is a phenomenal asset for Seattle, and the organization is best served by keeping No. 14 in a Seahawks uniform for as long as they can.

Seahawks WR's DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba were in an exclusive club last year

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the Seattle Seahawks have one of the best wide receiving corps in the NFL. We repeat it because it’s absolutely true. While age may have caught up to the great Tyler Lockett a little bit this year, in his place emerged second year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He and the always dominant DK Metcalf put on quite a show through the air.

On Twitter, the account @The33rdTeamFB made a list of all the pass catching duo’s in the league that both eclipsed 1,000+ yards each. On it included Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson of the Jets, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams of the Lions, Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers of the Raiders… and DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seahawks.

Now, fans online were quick to tweet at this account mentioning Metcalf did not have 1,000+ yards. Yes, they are correct, he did not.

Metcalf had “only” 992 receiving yards… despite missing two games.

Yeah, I am absolutely going to count him on this list. Given Metcalf’s production and history, I am willing to wager he would have absolutely managed to get at least eight yards had he played in the two games he missed.

However, hypothetical yards or extra games don’t matter, only results on the field do. And what we see with Metcalf is still an outstanding receiver who helps elevate the Seahawks offense. The pairing of Metcalf and JSN help make Seattle more of a threat through the air, and the team should strive to make every effort to keep this duo in tact for the 2025 season.

Seahawks announce Rick Dennison and Justin Outten to coaching staff

As expected, the Seattle Seahawks have added two new coaches to their offensive staff: Rick Dennison and Justin Outten. Interestingly enough, both men were former offensive coordinators for the Denver Broncos at one point in their careers. Dennison will serve as Seattle’s run game coordinator and senior offensive advisor. Outten was hired to be a run game specialist and assistant offensive line coach.

Dennison has been a long time offensive coach with an extensive history with the Kubiak family. He was Gary Kubiak’s, Klint’s father, OC with the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos – helping to win Super Bowl 50 with the franchise. He was on Klint Kubiak’s staff with the New Orleans Saints last season, and will follow him to the Emerald City.

As for Outten, after one season as the Broncos offensive coordinator, he has spent the last two years in Tennessee as a tight ends coach, a running backs coach, and a run game coordinator.

It should be noted that the Seahawks did not have a run game coordinator, or anyone resembling the role, last year under Ryan Grubb. Perhaps the lack of a coach in such a dedicated role contributed to Seattle’s inconsistency at even committing to running the ball in 2024.

Right now it is evident head coach Mike Macdonald wants that to change in 2025. Every hiring decision he and Klint Kubiak have made points to this conclusion. Rick Dennison and Justin Outten are merely the latest examples.

How much will a Geno Smith extension cost the Seahawks?

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to approach starting quarterback Geno Smith about a contract extension this offseason. It totally makes sense. Smith is currently scheduled to enter the final year of a previously signed three-year extension in 2025.

The Seahawks should sign Smith to an extension. Smith is slated to carry a bloated cap charge of $44.5 million. That’s the ninth-largest cap hit of any QB in the league, per Spotrac. Partially as a result, Seahawks general manager John Schneider is facing some financial difficulties. A contract extension for his starting quarterback would help actually lower the immediate cap charge, providing some much-needed breathing room.

One area the Seahawks are getting fantastic value in Smith’s contract is the annual average. Smith’s yearly salary of $25 million ranks 19th in the league. The former West Virginia standout was a surprise performer when he inked that three-year deal, and he’s since outperformed the yearly value of his contract.

Smith will expect a raise in pay despite his advancing age. Quarterback contracts have grown tremendously since his last extension. For example, statistics don’t paint the complete picture, but Smith is the 19th-highest paid QB while finishing fourth in passing yards and 13th in touchdowns this past season.

It’s fair to assume Smith will expect to surpass $30 million per year on a short-term contract extension. Baker Mayfield is younger, but signed a deal worth $33.3 million per season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he was in a similar tier of quarterback. Derek Carr is making $37.5 million, and Kirk Cousins somehow landed $45 million last offseason while being both older and injured.

Smith’s next contract should pay approximately between $32 and $35 million per campaign. Given his advancing age, the Seahawks should limit the extension to three years with a potential exit route after the second season (following 2027). Schneider has Smith on a bargain at $25 million/campaign, but pending negotiations will surely get Smith more in-line with his tier of quarterback.

5-round Seahawks 2025 NFL mock draft

The NFL Scouting Combine is less than two weeks away. Another critical event in the 2025 NFL draft process is fast approaching. The Seattle Seahawks are equipped with eight total selections, including three (Nos. 18, 50, 82) in the opening 100 picks.

With April’s festivities representing Seattle’s best opportunity to improve the roster, we’ve conducted a brand-new five-round mock draft.

Round 1 (No. 18): Donovan Jackson, IOL, Ohio State

Donovan Jackson would be plug-and-play for the Seahawks at left guard. Jackson moved to left tackle out of necessity during Ohio State’s National Championship run, showcasing terrific versatility. The Buckeyes standout is a pro-ready blocker who would immediately upgrade Mike Macdonald’s struggling offensive line.

Round 2 (No. 50): Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss

The Seahawks grab Geno Smith’s eventual successor in the second round. Jaxson Dart is generating significant buzz in NFL circles. Smith should sign a short-term extension with Seattle this offseason, but his advancing age creates a necessity for a plan-in-waiting. Dart is a mobile QB who can make every throw.

Round 3 (No. 82): Mason Taylor, TE, LSU

Tyler Lockett’s expected departure will create a need for another passing-down option in Klint Kubiak’s offense. Furthermore, veteran tight end Noah Fant is entering a contract year. Mason Taylor is a high-volume and athletic pass catcher who dominated at this year’s Senior Bowl.

Round 4 (No. 137): Jah Joyner, EDGE, Minnesota

The Seahawks prefer to keep the cupboard filled at EDGE and Uchenna Nwosu is expected to be released this offseason. Minnesota’s Jah Joyner is a developmental and highly athletic pass rushing prospect. Joyner wins with first-step quickness and explosiveness.

Round 5 (No. 173): Cody Lindenberg, LB, Minnesota

John Schneider should re-sign Ernest Jones IV, but better off-ball linebacker depth is needed behind him and Tyrice Knight. Cody Lindenberg is a violent, downhill prospect with a decisive trigger. Lindenberg navigates traffic and makes plays in the backfield.

3 affordable IOL the Seahawks could target in free agency

The Seattle Seahawks need to upgrade their interior offensive line this offseason. General manager John Schneider does not possess the financial resources required to make a major splash in free agency. The Seahawks are currently over the 2025 cap, but could quickly rectify that by making various roster moves, with veterans Tyler Lockett and Uchenna Nwosu qualifying as potential cap casualties to save money.

The financial situation may force Schneider to target affordable talents in free agency to help fix the offensive line. Schneider attempted something similar last offseason when signing veteran guard Laken Tomlinson to a one-year contract. That didn’t pay off, because Tomlinson simply wasn’t the player Seattle thought him to be.

With all of that mind, we’ve identified three affordable veterans in free agency who could help Seattle’s offensive line in 2025.

Kevin Zeitler | Detroit Lions

Kevin Zeitler will turn 35 during the 2025 campaign. That should make him affordable in free agency, despite him coming off an excellent season with the Detroit Lions where he posted a career-best run-blocking grade of 87.2, per Pro Football Focus. With the Seahawks in postseason contention, they could benefit from adding Zeitler for the upcoming season.

James Daniels | Pittsburgh Steelers

James Daniels suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in 2024. That places a huge unknown on his evaluation in free agency, but he was playing quality football for the Pittsburgh Steelers at guard before suffering that devastating setback. Daniels was especially playing well in pass protection, an area of weakness for the Seahawks.

Will Hernandez | Arizona Cardinals

Will Hernandez also underwent season-ending surgery in 2024. The Seahawks are very familiar with his abilities given that he’s spent the previous three campaigns with the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals. Hernandez could be available for under $5 million per season in free agency.
