SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2253027575.jpg

It’s Week 17 and the New Orleans Saints are now on a 3-game winning streak after defeating the New York Jets in the Superdome last Sunday. This week, the Saints will look to continue their run in Tennessee as they take on the Titans in Nissan Stadium, who are 2-12.

While this season started off rocky, as most rebuilds are, the Saints have really started to put the puzzle pieces together to build a solid foundation for the future.

But as always, we want to hear from you… How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction? Vote in this week’s poll and let us know.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Saints fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Who was the Saints’ breakout player vs. the Jets?

gettyimages-2253034169.jpg

The New Orleans Saints have now won three straight games after taking down the New York Jets on Sunday at Caesars Superdome in the final home game of the 2025 NFL season.

The breakout player from the Saints’ victory over the Jets put together arguably the best performance of his impressive rookie campaign: S Jonas Sanker.

gettyimages-2253034202.jpg

The 23-year-old third-round pick out of Virginia continues to open eyes after turning in what many would say was his best performance in Black and Gold through 15 games.

On Sunday against the Jets, Sanker recorded six total tackles (one solo) and was targeted just twice in pass coverage. He did not allow a single reception, breaking up one pass and snagging the other for his second career interception—his three takeaways on the year are the most by a Saints rookie since CB Paulson Adebo in 2021. He also finished the day with a team-high and career-high 92.2 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, including a 90.1 coverage grade.

Sanker, fellow rookie fourth-round cornerback Quincy Riley, and second-year cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry have quickly developed into a solid trio for a young Saints secondary. A unit many entered the season viewing as a weakness has instead given the fanbase plenty of hope heading into the future.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in the Saints win over the Jets

imagn-27865966.jpg

The Good: Chris Olave

Chris Olave had easily his best game of the season against the Jets. The Saints receiver caught 10 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, his second multi-score game of the year. With this game he set a career high in receptions in a single season with 92 and counting, added to his career high in touchdown (now standing at 8), and is just 79 yards away from a career high in yards. All together Olave is having the best year of his career at exactly the right time. An injury plagued 2024 was not what anyone wanted to see after two great seasons to begin his career, but Olave has responded by proving that he is still a top level WR1 and someone you can build an offense around. He is set for a new contract after next season, and the Saints should definitely keep him around long term as he has developed quite a relationship with rookie QB Tyler Shough. With Shough, Olave has caught 44 passes for 560 yards and 5 touchdowns compared to 48 receptions for 484 yards and 3 touchdowns with Spencer Rattler under center.

gettyimages-2253027495.jpg

The Bad: Red Zone offense

The Saints offense settled for multiple short yardage field goals on Sunday as they were unable to punch it in for a touchdown until the second half. The Saints got to the Jets 17, 18, and 21 yard lines on three successive drives and settled for field goals on each one. This was enough against a Jets team that is scoring just 18 points per game, and the lack of a run game with the Saints top three running backs all injured certainly doesn’t help, but it is still something they will need to improve on to close the season.

The Ugly: What the defensive line did to the Jets offensive line

Not much was ugly about this game for the Saints, as they protected Tyler Shough pretty well and also only committed three penalties and won by four possessions. The ugliest thing about this game was what the Saints defense did to the Jets offensive line. They sacked quarterback Brady Cook 8 times for a net loss of 57 yards, and held the Jets to just 64 rushing yards. Cam Jordan, in what may have been his final game in the Superdome, sacked Cook twice bringing his season total to 8.5, more than he had in the previous two seasons combined. Nathan Shepherd, Chase Young, Chris Rumph, Jonah Williams, and Alontae Taylor also got to the quarterback on Sunday in what was by far the Saint best game rushing the passer all year.

State of the NFC South entering Week 17

gettyimages-2253009967.jpg

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

For the division, one of the most critical matchups of the year occurred this week. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers had their first game of the season between the rivals, and for the division, this was a battle for the top spot in the division. The Buccaneers have lost their lead, and this week, they officially lost first place. Carolina beat Tampa Bay 23-20, and it was a really good game by the Panthers.

On the Bucs side, the same issues they have dealt with all season showed up again. The offense struggled to find consistency; QB Baker Mayfield made mistakes; the run game was missing; and the pass defense allowed QB Bryce Young to have a good day. The run defense continues to do well, but it wasn’t enough in this game.

Atlanta Falcons

Although the Falcons are out of the playoffs, they continue to fight in games, and QB Kirk Cousins is proving to be a decent backup. This week, Atlanta faced off against the Arizona Cardinals, and the difference in this game was touchdowns. The Cardinals got out to a 10-0 lead, but after failing to score again, the Falcons capitalized and won 26-19, scoring three touchdowns. Bijan Robinson continues to be a vital piece to the Falcons’ offense, and if it were not for him, Atlanta may not have won this game.

Carolina Panthers

And on the other side of the top NFC South battle, the Panthers got their necessary win. Bryce Young continues to look like a starting-level QB, which tends to be the case later in the season, and the Panthers’ defense made Baker Mayfield’s day tough. Again, these two will have one more matchup in the last game of the season, but that might not matter in the end. If Carolina wins this week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks and the Bucs lose to the Miami Dolphins, the Panthers will secure the division title. If not, all comes down to week 18.

New Orleans Saints

In a massive twist of fate, the Saints are the hottest team in the division. After getting their win last week against the New York Jets, New Orleans is on a three-game win streak. The offense looks much better than most of the season, which can be attributed to QB Tyler Shough’s impressive play and HC Kellen Moore opening up the playbook. The Defense has also massively improved from its struggles early in the season. One of the most dangerous things this season was regression, and although it looked like that could happen earlier, we are now at the point of improvement.

Current NFC South Standings

  1. Buccaneers (8-7)
  2. Panthers (7-8)
  3. Falcons (6-9)
  4. Saints (5-10)

Our defense vs. their offense: Tennessee Titans

gettyimages-2253027575.jpg

The 5-10 New Orleans Saints will head to Nashville for a date with the 3-12 Tennessee Titans this weekend. As the season winds down and both teams are already eliminated from postseason contention, this Sunday will serve as an opportunity to earn valuable reps for young, developing players and put bragging rights on the line.

Tennessee’s offense ranks near the bottom of the league at 31st overall. They average fewer than 260 yards per game and only score 16.7 points per game. New Orleans’ defensive play has elevated tremendously over the second half of the season. They rank ninth overall in the NFL by allowing averages of just 303.5 yards and 22.5 points per contest.

First overall pick Cam Ward has tossed for 2,866 yards to this point in the season. While he has not put up any video game-like numbers, he has played well enough for the Titans to be excited about the team’s future at quarterback. Ward is completing over 60% of his passes and has a nearly 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio.

In a turn of events for Tennessee’s run game, it has been former Dallas Cowboy Tony Pollard as the head horse for the Titans rather than 2023 draft pick Tyjae Spears. After missing the first four weeks with an injury, Spears returned to the lineup, where many expected him to be the lead back for the Titans. However, Pollard has held a firm grasp on the starter role for the season.

Pollard has accumulated 949 yards on the ground with five TDs on more than 200 carries as opposed to Spears’ 263 yards on just 63 totes with two scores. Spears has been used more within the passing game, but not by much. He’s had nearly ten more receptions and under 100 more yards receiving than Pollard.

Chig Okonkwo has been the Titans’ leading pass catcher with just over 500 yards through the air, although he has just one score. For that matter, only three other players have multiple scores for Tennessee offensively. Wideouts Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor have four and three TDs, respectively. Tight End Gunnar Helm has found the end zone twice this season.

Demario Davis is leading the Saints with 131 total tackles this year. He has been a menace around the field this year with three pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Davis also has earned six tackles for loss.

Defensive end Cameron Jordan has proven to still be efficient in his aging years with New Orleans. He has eight and a half sacks this year, followed by Chase Young, who has seven. Both edge rushers have a forced fumble as well.

Cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry leads New Orleans in both interceptions and passes defensed. He’s managed to bat away 11 passes this season and picked off three more from opposing QBs.

New Orleans is coming off their best defensive performance all year last week when it limited the New York Jets to just six total points. They held New York to a combined 4-19 on third and fourth down attempts while forcing two turnovers.

If Brandon Staley’s group can get anywhere near as good a job as it did last Sunday versus the Titans, Tennessee fans will be in for a long day.

Final Saints vs. Titans injury report

gettyimages-2251923004.jpg

The New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans have wrapped up their final practices ahead of their Week 17 rookie quarterback showdown. The Saints ruled out four players and listed three as questionable. Among the players New Orleans ruled out was defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, who suffered an injury in the win over the New York Jets and could potentially miss the final two games of the season. Running back Alvin Kamara remains out of practice as he recovers from a knee and ankle injury. Wide receiver Chris Olave is coming off a big game, bringing in 148 yards and two touchdowns, but is dealing with a back injury and is questionable for Sunday. There is optimism that he will be ready to go.

The Titans ruled out three players and listed two others as questionable.

Saints Rookie Impact Report: Week 17

gettyimages-2253034913.jpg

Let’s start the breakdown for the New Orleans Saints’ Sunday matchup against the Tennessee Titans!

OT Kelvin Banks

Against the New York Jets, Banks had an overall pretty good day, but there was a stretch of plays in which he got absolutely dominated. For the first time this season, he truly looked like a rookie, and he got beaten around 7 times in a row. The Titans do not have the best group of edge rushers, but Jidah Ward is 15th in QB hits this season, so he is going to be a player to watch all game.

QB Tyler Shough

This is going to be a very fun game. For the first time this season, Tyler Shough will be facing off against another one of the rookie QBs from his class. If you remember, New Orleans beat the Jaxson Dart-led New York Giants earlier in the season, but Spencer Rattler was the QB. This time around, Shough will be dueling off against Cam Ward. Quickly, Shough has risen in the ROTY odds, passing Ward, so if that award is still in the cards, Shough must have a good game.

S Jonas Sanker

Wow, Sanker had a great game in Week 16. He made a great interception, read the pass perfectly, was a sure tackler, and had an excellent pass deflection. This performance was very similar to how Sanker played when he became the starter earlier in the season. Against the Titans, Sanker may not be able to get another turnover, but he needs to stay solid in coverage. Similarly, keeping the tackling consistent is a must against Tennessee.

CB Quincy Riley

Similar to Sanker, Quincy Riley will need to stay strong in coverage. Ward can really pick apart a defense and make some high-level throws. This could be a game in which Riley struggles.

Week 17: Saints vs. Titans – Social media reactions

gettyimages-2253827031.jpg

Tyler Shough and the New Orleans Saints outperformed Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans by a final score of 34-26 en route to the team’s fourth consecutive win. The Saints are now 6-10 overall and will close out the season on the road versus NFC South foe Atlanta Falcons, but first, let’s check out what social media had to say following this weekend’s victory.

Saints are the best team in the NFC South right now. We found our rhythm just 1 game too late.

— Allen K. (@AllenK_81) December 28, 2025
People are going to say “it was the Titans.” That’s how you expect your franchise QB to play against bad teams. Heck of a day for Shough!

— Saints Updates (@bigeasynation) December 28, 2025
Really excited to see the #Saints continue to improve and win with @tylershough2 leading them. It looks like we’ve found our qb of the future. Now continue to build this team in the draft and sign a few big names in FA and this team can win the NFC South next year.

— Jason Ramezan (@jasonramezan) December 28, 2025
Olave is playing like a true WR1 today

Recapping the Saints’ comeback victory over Tennessee

imagn-27894572.jpg

The New Orleans Saints sought their fourth consecutive victory when they paid a visit to the Tennessee Titans in Week 17. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s game.

First Quarter

The game opened with a pair of punts before a 50-yard field goal from Joey Slye gave Tennessee a 3-0 lead.

The Saints responded with a field goal attempt of their own, set up by a 36-yard connection from Tyler Shough to Kevin Austin Jr. But Charlie Smyth’s 43-yard attempt went wide left.

It was then Cam Ward’s turn for a deep pass, as he found Chimere Dike for 38 yards on the ensuing Titans drive. Slye soon converted again to double the lead.

The visitors then went three and out, and Tennessee drove back near midfield before the quarter’s end.

Second Quarter

The Titans kept the ball moving before Ward hit Chigoziem Okonkwo for a 43-yard touchdown.

New Orleans, trailing 13-0, responded with somewhat of a marathon 44-yard drive. The 12-play possession took over 7 minutes with a number of short gains, before Smyth ended it by nailing a 56-yard field goal to get the Saints on the board.

Penalties had already marred the Titans’ ensuing drive before it got even worse for the hosts, as Chase Young was able to force the ball out from Ward and run it all the way in for a Saints touchdown.

Nevertheless, Tennessee found a response before halftime, helped massively by a pass interference call against Justin Reid, costing the Saints 50 yards. Ward found Elic Ayomanor for a 7-yard touchdown before the half to restore a 20-10 lead.

Third Quarter

Audric Estime and Chris Olave started the second half on the right foot for the black and gold as the drive reached midfield. Shough then found Juwan Johnson on a 30-yard pass as the Saints entered the red zone.

Two plays later, it was Olave in the end zone for New Orleans after a 19-yard grab.

Despite finding 59 yards on just the first two plays of their next drive, with a run from Tony Pollard and a throw to Mason Kinsey, the Saints were still able to force Tennessee into another field goal from Slye, putting the score at 23-17.

An 18-yard pass to Dante Pettis helped matters as Shough looked to cut into the lead once more, but the Saints were kept to just 3 points again with a 57-yarder from Smyth.

Fourth Quarter

The Titans proceeded to keep the theme of long field goals running, as Slye converted from 58 yards to put the hosts up 26-20.

A huge throw to Johnson through traffic gave the Saints drive instant momentum, but a catch-and-run from Pettis on the next play saw him fumble at the 3-yard line on his way to the end zone, resulting in a touchback and giving possession back to Tennessee.

The Titans quickly punted, and then the Saints were sure to make no mistake. Shough found Olave for 60 yards before throwing a 10-yard touchdown to Austin Jr to give the black and gold a first lead of the game.

Tennessee went three and out again, and a 23-yard pass from Shough to Johnson preceded a 32-yard touchdown run from Estime to extend the visitors’ lead to 34-26.

The Titans failed to do any damage from there, and the Saints were able to close out the game for their fourth straight victory.

The final game of the season now awaits the black and gold, as they travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons in Week 18.

SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

It’s Week 18 for the New Orleans Saints who are now on a 4-game winning streak after defeating the Tennessee Titans in Nashville last Sunday. This week, the Saints will look to close out their 2025 season on a high note with a 5th consecutive win coming against their archrivals, the Atlanta Falcons.

While this season is coming to end sooner than fans would like, there is a lot to be excited for as the Saints have seemed to silenced critics on whether QB Tyler Shough be the leader this team needs to build around in the near future.

Saints power ranking entering Week 18

gettyimages-2253851847.jpg

NFL.com – 23 (+1)

“After sleeping through the first half offensively, the Saints turned on the afterburners in the comeback win — their fourth straight victory, putting a bow on what had been a tough season. Granted, it came against a beleaguered Titans defense, but what Tyler Shough has done has paved the way for him to be New Orleans’ 2026 starter. Shough completed 12 of 16 passes for 251 yards and two TDs after halftime, and he did so without relying on his scrambling as much as we had seen in recent games. He and Kellen Moore appear to be in a groove right now, setting up the Saints as a potential future contender in an NFC South that doesn’t have a clear favorite right now. Also, it hasn’t been talked about a lot, but how good has Chase Young been? He’s shaping up to be one of the team’s best signings in recent years.“

Fox Sports – 24 (-2)

“Rookie QB Tyler Shough threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns and the Saints have now won four straight. Not sure what else he has to do to prove he deserves to be the starter in New Orleans next season.“

Bleacher Report – 23 (+1)

“Aside from missing the playoffs, the New Orleans Saints have to be pleased with how their 2025 campaign has unfolded. They’ve won four straight and appear to be forging a real identity under rookie head coach Kellen Moore.

Just as importantly, New Orleans has seen considerable growth from quarterback Tyler Shough. The rookie has repeatedly shown signs that he can be the long-term answer that the Saints have lacked since Drew Brees’ retirement.

Shough has now thrown for 300-plus yards in back-to-back games, and he largely outplayed No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward in New Orleans’ latest victory. The Saints have to feel good about their chances of competing in the NFC South next season. — Knox

CBS Sports – 22 (+3)

“Tyler Shough is pushing to be the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He has been playing outstanding football for this team that has won four straight games.”

Sports Illustrated – 20 (+3)

“I have begun my campaign to allow the Saints to be in the playoffs instead of the Buccaneers or Panthers. Tyler Shough in prime time? Who says no? ”

A look back at the history between the Saints and Falcons

150560950.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will close out their 2025 season on the road this Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Falcons in Mersades-Benz Stadium.

It all started back on November 26, 1967, when the Saints defeated the Falcons 27-24 in Tulane Stadium. It was the Falcons’ second season and the Saints’ inaugural season in the NFL.

This will be 113th time (including 1 postseason matchup) that these two franchises will have faced one another with the Atlanta leading the series 57-56.

While there have been many memorable matchups between these two rivals, the most infamous game was played on Monday, September 25th, 2006, dubbed “Domecoming,” which was the Saints first home game played in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. In that historic game, we saw Saints safety Steve Gleason famously block a punt by Falcons’ kicker Michael Koenen with DB Curtis Deloatch recovering the ball in the Falcons’ end zone for a touchdown. New Orleans went on to win 23-3 and at that time, the game became the highest-rated program in ESPN’s history.

The Saints will head this game with a 6-10 record and on a 4-game winning streak to face a 7-9 Falcons team who just defeated the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football.

Kickoff is at 12:00 pm and the game will be broadcast on FOX with Adam Amin (play-by-play), Drew Brees (color analyst) and Kristina Pink (sideline)
