Ups and downs from Saints vs. Falcons

imagn-27666211.jpg

The New Orleans Saints dropped to 2-9 on the season after a disappointing loss to NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons. The Saints’ offense totaled just three points on the day, with only the defense finding the end zone for the black and gold. New Orleans will now travel to Miami to take on the 4-7 Dolphins.

Up: RB Devin Neal

gettyimages-2248130327.jpg

The Saints’ running back room has been thin since the injury to Kendre Miller against the Chicago Bears, and now an injury to star running back Alvin Kamara only makes things more concerning. Kamara suffered a knee injury against the Falcons, leaving in the first half and not returning for the remainder of the game. Rookie running back Devin Neal took over the majority of carries for the Saints’ offense.

Neal didn’t have a great day on the ground, finishing with just 18 yards on seven attempts, but he made an impact as a receiver. The sixth round pick caught 5 passes for 43 yards on 7 targets. It’s not only his ability to make plays with that ball that makes him stand out, however. The rookie running back has been a pleasant surprise in pass protection and isn’t afraid to take on a block. There have been some instances of Neal getting beaten, but he has earned the opportunity for more playtime.

Down: HC Kellen Moore

imagn-27666373.jpg

Despite their win against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10, the perception of Kellen Moore’s playcalling remained the same: points were left on the table. There have been too many instances of the Saints’ offense being within three yards of the goalline and ending the drive with no points or settling for a chipshot field goal.

The Saints’ offense started the day badly, fumbling a handoff on their second offensive snap. On their next drive, wide receiver Mason Tipton would take a kick return 75 yards and set the offense up in perfect scoring position. Despite starting the drive at the nine-yard line, the New Orleans offense would lose yards and eventually have to settle for a field goal attempt that kicker Blake Grupe would miss. The Saints would have another missed field goal attempt later in the game, along with two instances of turnovers on downs.

Kellen Moore will get another year as head coach for the Saints, and I believe that is the right move. But he is running one of the worst offenses in the league up to this point of the season, and there’s a lot that could be said about his decision-making and play-calling.

Down: K Blake Grupe

imagn-27666215.jpg

By the time this goes up, there’s likely been some sort of announcement on the Saints’ decision with kicker Blake Grupe. The third-year kicker missed two kicks on Sunday, with neither being very demanding for an NFL kicker (38 and 47 yards). With his misses in the loss, Grupe has fallen to the 39th-ranked FG% in the NFL, despite only 31 other NFL teams.

The Saints are bringing in a couple of kickers for tryouts this week, including controversial pick Justin Tucker. It’s clear the leeway Grupe was once given has finally been cut short, and he truthfully shouldn’t be the starter for New Orleans going forward. Rather, it’s one of the kickers the team brought in for a tryout, or second-year kicker Charlie Smyth, who’s been stashed on the practice squad. The black and gold need to make a change at kicker.

If Saints win/lose vs Dolphins

imagn-27666134.jpg

The New Orleans Saints are hitting the road in Week 13 as they visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Here’s a look at what either outcome could potentially mean for the black and gold.

If the Saints win

A victory on Sunday would mean an offensive bounce-back after the Saints struggled at times to move the ball or take advantage of scoring positions last week against Atlanta.

A fair share of the season’s nine defeats could’ve gone either way. Many may expect Sunday to be a similar story. If the game is close down the stretch, it gives Tyler Shough another chance to stamp a strong impression as he continues his rookie campaign.

Moreover, a win against a turnover-prone Miami team could be strongly helped by the defense. Regardless, a win would put New Orleans at 2-1 in their last three games before they turn back to NFC South competition.

If the Saints lose

A loss drops the black and gold to 2-10, with many fans taking the improved draft position as a silver lining.

Defeat hasn’t often come as a big surprise throughout the season, but there’s always plenty to look out for beyond the scoreboard. Regardless of the outcome, limiting penalties and unforced errors are among the things Saints fans will be hoping to see, as well as strong play from the rookie quarterback.

How do you feel ahead of Sunday? Can the Saints grab a first non-divisional road win against Miami? Let us know in the comments!

The New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their final practices ahead of their Week 13 matchup. The Dolphins listed only four players with a game-day designation for Sunday: wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, tight end Darren Waller, defensive tackle Benito Jones, and offensive lineman Austin Jackson, all questionable.

Saints Rookie Impact Report: Week 13

imagn-27666626.jpg

Let’s start the breakdown for the New Orleans Saints Sunday matchup against the Miami Dolphins!

OT Kelvin Banks

Contrary to many social media posts, Kelvin Banks did well against the Falcons. It was always going to be a challenging game, and without Taliese Fuaga on the other side, Banks was really the only great offensive lineman the Saints had. Like last week, New Orleans’ opponents, the Miami Dolphins, are going to have a good pass rush, and Banks will be tested.

QB Tyler Shough

Last week, Shough had a very similar performance to the one against the Rams. It wasn’t excellent, but it wasn’t bad either. Still, if the playcalling had been better, we would have talked about this performance differently. Now, against the Dolphins, hopefully, the addition of Fuaga and potentially Kellen Moore putting more trust in his QB, Shough could have a better performance. The main issue to watch out for is if Chris Olave is out with his injury, because that would get scary for Sunday.

S Jonas Sanker

Jonas Sanker is going to have a massive job on Sunday. Tackling is extremely important against the Dolphins because their players will dominate if they can run freely. The good news is Sanker won’t have to worry about the deep ball as much (but still might happen) due to Tua Tagovailoa’s lack of arm strenght. Also, Tagovailoa is prone to turning the ball over.

CB Quincy Riley

Speaking of players that can take advantage of risky throws, Quincy Riley can get an interception in this game. Obviously, first focusing on coverage is essential, but Riley can be a real ball hawk in this defense, and with how Brandon Staley is having his players play, I could see it happening.

RB Devin Neal

After Kelvin Banks and Tyler Shough, Devin Neal is going to have the most pressure in this game. If he does play (Neal is on the practice injury report right now), Neal will have a massive day. It looks like Alvin Kamara is going to be out with his knee injury, and the Dolphins’ run defense is near league-worst.

Saints Spotlight: Week 13 vs. Miami Dolphins

gettyimages-2246187521.jpg

This week, the New Orleans Saints head to the Sunshine State to face the 4–7 Miami Dolphins in Week 13 of the 2025 NFL season at Hard Rock Stadium. After standing out as one of the few bright spots in Sunday’s embarrassing loss to the rival Atlanta Falcons, this week’s player to watch is second-year WR Mason Tipton.

gettyimages-2246190868.jpg

Following Rashid Shaheed’s trade to the Seattle Seahawks at the deadline and the departure of veteran Brandin Cooks this past week, opportunities have quickly opened for the 25-year-old Tipton. In Sunday’s loss to Atlanta—the Saints’ first game without both Shaheed and Cooks—Tipton hauled in three receptions on a season-high four targets for 22 yards, along with an electric 75-yard kick return.

After Kellen Moore highlighted Tipton as a player whose role would grow significantly following Cooks’ release, the former underrated free agent wideout logged a season-high 56 offensive snaps (70%), and that number should only continue to increase moving forward.

Ups and downs from Saints vs. Dolphins

imagn-27084836.jpg

The New Orleans Saints dropped to 2-10 on Sunday after losing 21-17 to the Miami Dolphins. Despite the loss, there were positive performances from key players that stood out for New Orleans, while some areas of concern continue to be an issue.

Up: WR Devaughn Vele

gettyimages-2248674767.jpg

By far the biggest standout for the Saints on Sunday was the breakout of wide receiver Devaughn Vele. The second-year wide out logged 8 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Vele was rookie quarterback Tyler Shough’s go-to target in the loss and brought in every pass coming to him, literally. The former Denver Broncos wide receiver was targeted eight times and brought in all eight receptions.

After trading away Rashid Shaheed and waiving Brandin Cooks, the Saints needed a wide receiver to step up. On top of the need at receiver, New Orleans has been missing a big-body target that can catch passes over the middle of the field. While Chris Olave has had a solid performance this season, he hasn’t been as reliable over the middle of the field, and a history of injuries is a concern. At 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, Vele offers size and reliability the Saints haven’t had since Michael Thomas.

Up: QB Tyler Shough

gettyimages-2248674867.jpg

Quarterback Tyler Shough may be a controversial pick for a positive in Sunday’s loss. In fact, the Saints’ offense hasn’t scored 20+ points since the rookie took over. Despite the offensive struggles, however, Shough continues to display his immense arm talent and his ability to make off-schedule plays.

Shough ended the day throwing for 2 touchdowns, a fumble, and an interception, with another interception not showing up on the stat sheet due to it occurring during a 2-point conversion. Despite the struggles, the 26-year-old rookie continues to show flashes of talent and will make the Saints’ decision in April difficult if they hold a top-3 pick.

Down: Offensive line

imagn-27083891.jpg

The Offensive line play for the Saints continues to struggle. Shough was sacked four times on Sunday, and while it is valid to put some of the blame on the rookie quarterback, he also was forced to make plays with his feet due to a quickly crumbling pocket.

Pro Football Focus released their grades for Sunday’s matchup, and the O-Line for the black and gold did not fare well. RT Taliese Fuaga was given a 59.0 grade while rookie LT Kelvin Banks Jr. earned a 52.4. But the worst graded offensive lineman for the Saints on Sunday was veteran guard Dillon Radunz, who earned a 45.5. New Orleans continues to struggle with offensive line play, and it’s hindering the team as a whole. The Saints have drafted an offensive lineman in the first round in the last two years, yet it continues to be one of their biggest areas of concern.

SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

New Orleans Saints will head into a Week 14 road matchup in Florida again for their 2nd game of the season against their current NFC South leaders, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Saints did lose to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, several positives came out the game as the team put up a lot of fight in what was Charlie Smyth’s debut and WR Devaughn Vele’s breakout game. While their record may say 2-10, many are saying the Saints are a better team than that and have a lot to build upon moving forward.

But as always, we want to hear from you. How are you feeling about the team and are you confident the Saints are headed in the right direction? Vote in this week’s poll and let us know!

Week 13: Saints vs. Dolphins – Social media reactions

gettyimages-2249216298.jpg

The New Orleans Saints’ valiant comeback effort fell short, and dropped to a 2-10 overall record following a 21-17 road loss to the Miami Dolphins, officially eliminating the team from playoff contention. With just five games remaining in the 2025 NFL regular season, New Orleans will head back to Florida for their second meeting of the year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here is how social media reacted to the Week 13 defeat.

My favorite part of going to the Dolphins-Saints game was leaving.

Absolute garbage football.

The Dolphins kicker almost singlehandledly beat the Saints today 😂

— Mo (@Go_Okstate) December 1, 2025
With their loss to the Dolphins, the #Saints have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.

This is the fifth consecutive season that the Saints will miss out on the playoffs, a feat that last happened early in the 2000s, prior to the Payton/Brees era.

— Cajun Sports Talk™ (@CajunSportsTalk) November 30, 2025
#Dolphins were terrible – almost felt sorry for the #Saints for losing, they played well overall. They have a lot more potential than Miami.

— Frank Peter Oliver (@FrankPOliver) November 30, 2025
It may not have been the result he would have hoped for, but a momentous day for Charlie Smyth nonetheless 🏈

Saints make two signings to active roster

gettyimages-2248867848.jpg

Yesterday, the New Orleans Saints waived WR Kevin Austin Jr. and OT Barry Wesley, which opened up two more spots on the active roster. With many options on the current practice squad, the Saints could have gone in a bunch of different directions. In the end, WR Dante Pettis and G William Sherman were signed to the active roster.

The #Saints have signed WR Dante Pettis and G William Sherman from the practice squad to the active roster.

— Tina Howell (@TinaHowellNOLA) December 3, 2025

Since the departure of WR Rashid Shaheed, Pettis has become one of the primary kick returners and the punter returner for the Saints. He has not had much success, and WR Mason Tipton actually looks like the better kick returner, but Pettis has also not fumbled any punts, which is positive. Pettis has also come in at WR throughout games, so this may be a way we see more of him on some plays.

In Sherman’s case, this is a depth option for the Saints on gamedays, and with how disappointing the Saints’ interior offensive line is, any potential backup options are a good idea to have.

Wednesday’s Saints vs. Buccaneers injury report

gettyimages-2249224140.jpg

The New Orleans Saints have wrapped up their first practice ahead of their NFC South matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Saints listed only four players on Wednesday’s injury report, all of whom were absent. Running back Alvin Kamara remained absent as he deals with a knee injury. At the same time, safety Justin Reid was added after suffering an injury early in the team’s last matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Wide receiver Chris Olave was absent after reaggravating his back injury in the team’s loss on Sunday.

The Buccaneers had nine players on Wednesday’s injury report, including many key players. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was limited with a left shoulder injury, while running back Bucky Irving Jr. and wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. were also limited after making appearances in the team’s win over the Arizona Cardinals. Tampa Bay also opened the practice window for wide receiver Mike Evans, who was injured early in the season with a collarbone injury.

NFL Picks Week 14: Shough against the Bucs

imagn-27426687.jpg

The New Orleans Saints face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road this week in an NFC South matchup. This season is now lost for the Saints and the focus for many fans has moved towards the future. Some would like to sacrifice wins for draft position, while others covet winning above any draft prospect. No matter what side of the fence fans are on, the team itself is still fighting to win games, the biggest question is if they have the talent necessary to do it. The biggest piece for the Saints is QB Tyler Shough, and how Shough does against the Bucs will tell the tale of this game.

Let’s take a look at all of the crucial matchups in the league this week as we enter the final stretch of the 2025 NFL season.

Last week I went 10-6

I told you so: Jets over Falcons!

What do I know: Colts over Texans?

***

WEEK 14

Thursday, December 4th – Thursday Night Football

Cowboys(6-5-1) at Lions(7-5)

Dallas is currently surging, having won three-straight games, first against sad-sack Vegas, while the last two were against this past February’s Super Bowl contestants. Detroit has traded wins and losses every week since the beginning of October, never winning two-straight but never losing two-straight either during that stretch. Well, for the Lions’ sake, they lost their last game, so this is their win week. Detroit wins 24-17.

Pick: Lions

***

Sunday, December 7th – Early Games

Seahawks(9-3) at Falcons(4-8)

Sam Darnold and the high-flying Seattle offense will continue to soar against Kirk Cousins in Atlanta. Seattle wins 29-21.

Pick: Seahawks

***

Steelers(6-6) at Ravens(6-6)

As bad as the NFC South has been, the AFC North has arguably been worse. Now, two of the most bitter rivals in the NFL face off for the division lead, sporting identical .500 records. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry will be the difference makers in this showdown. Baltimore wins 26-16.

Pick: Ravens

***

Titans(1-11) at Browns(3-9)

This matchup stinks worse than those Thanksgiving leftovers in the back of the fridge. Cleveland wins 21-17.

Pick: Browns

***

Colts(8-4) at Jaguars(8-4) – Game of the Week

After a remarkable start, winning 7 of their first 8 games, Indy has fallen off a cliff, losing 3 of their last 4, all against AFC opponents. They have now been lapped by New England and Denver on the top of the AFC, and now find themselves in a dead heat for the AFC South against this week’s opponent, Jacksonville. The Jags come into this one on a roll, winning 4 of their last 5. Jacksonville has the momentum and home-field advantage, but Indy, in their most desperate hour, finds a way in the closing moments of this divisional showdown. Indianapolis wins 30-27.

Pick: Colts

***

Commanders(3-9) at Vikings(4-8)

Washington has followed-up an NFC title game appearance with an absolute nightmare of a season, losing seven-consecutive games as well as losing Jayden Daniels to injury. The losing will continue in Minnesota against a Vikings team that has lost six of their last seven games themselves. Both of these teams were soaring a year ago, now they’re both in the dirt. Minnesota wins 21-13.

Pick: Vikings

***

Dolphins(5-7) at Jets(3-9)

This could be considered a matchup of two of the league’s worst, but in reality, both teams are playing their best football of the season over the last six weeks. Believe it or not, the Jets will win back-to-back games here. New York wins 24-23.

Pick: Jets

***

Bengals(4-8) at Bills(8-4)

It’s been a bumpy road for Buffalo as of late, having traded wins and losses every week since Week 10, and it’s time for another loss, against a Cincy team that looks like the team that started the season with Joe Burrow back at quarterback. Burrow and the Bengals are about to pull off another huge upset here. Cincinnati wins 26-14.

Pick: Bengals

***

Saints(2-10) at Buccaneers(7-5)

Tampa Bay has been surprisingly vulnerable since their last meeting with the Saints in Week 8, losing three-straight games against Super Bowl contenders. They found themselves back on the on ramp to easy street against the Cardinals last week, but that game was far closer than it ever should’ve been. Now, every opponent they have remaining, except Carolina, have losing records. Unfortunately, the team remaining with the worst record is the Saints.

The Saints are currently suffering through their worst season in two decades, and their worst offensive outing in this historically poor season came against these same Bucs in late October. Spencer Rattler got the start at quarterback in that game, but Tyler Shough got to see some action in relief. Now Shough will get the start, his fifth straight and although he has shown some flashes, and enough promise to be the starter for the 2026 season as well, he struggled in action against Tampa Bay during their last meeting, and his supporting cast on offense hasn’t really improved since. The lack of offensive firepower, just like every week, will ruin the Saints’ chances of leaving Tampa with the win. Tampa Bay wins 24-13.

Pick: Buccaneers

***

Sunday, December 7th – Late Games

Broncos(10-2) at Raiders(2-10)

Denver stands atop the AFC, alongside the Pats, having won nine-consecutive games, and they will easily make it ten, as they face one of the absolute worst teams in the NFL in Vegas. Denver wins 24-14.

Pick: Broncos

***

Bears(9-3) at Packers(8-3-1)

Green Bay and Chicago face off in the first of two showdowns over the next three weeks. This one will come down to the closing moments, but the Pack wins this nail-biter in Lambeau. Green Bay wins 24-21.

Pick: Packers

***

Rams(9-3) at Cardinals(3-9)

The Rams come into this one stinging, fresh off a stunning loss in Carolina, and now they will take their frustration out on the lowly Cards, who have lost 9 of their last 10 games. Los Angeles wins 24-12.

Pick: Rams

***

Sunday Night Football

Texans(7-5) at Chiefs(6-6)

Following a bumpy start to their season, Houston has won four-straight games and find themselves one game out of first place in the AFC South. Kansas City stunningly finds themselves on life support in the AFC Wild Card race and they simply can’t afford to lose much more here at the end of the season. Kansas City finds a way at home. Kansas City wins 24-17.

Pick: Chiefs

***

Monday, December 8th – Monday Night Football

Eagles(8-4) at Chargers(8-4)

Philly is on the ropes, having lost consecutive games, but their schedule lightens up considerably after this game. The Eagles will pull out a close win in the City of Angels in primetime. Philadelphia wins 27-26.

Pick: Eagles

***
