The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from the Saints win against the Panthers

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

The Good: Tyler Shough and the defense

New Orleans Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough finished his second career start with 282 yards on 19/27 passing and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. Shough found Chris Olave for a 62-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to give the Saints a 10-7 lead. Shough would late ice the game for good with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson in the 4th quarter to put them ahead by two possessions. The rookie has looked better and better with each appearance and now has a chance to build some confidence as the Saints schedule eases up down the stretch (5 of their next 7 opponents are multiple gams under .500). The Saints defense also deserves some props for their performance on Sunday, as they surrendered the fewest amount of points since Week 15 in 2023. After giving up an opening drive TD, the Panthers next four drives gained 17 yards on 13 plays and resulted in four punts. In the second half the Saints defense got two takeaways to help shut the door on Carolina this week.

imagn-27545515.jpg

The Bad: Penalties

Penalties again plagued the Saints on Sunday, as they were flagged 6 times for a total of 60 yards. An offside by Bryan Bresee turned a 3rd and 8 into a 3rd and 3 which was converted for a 1st down, and a roughing the passer wiped out an interception on the Panthers opening touchdown drive. A holding wiped out a first down scramble by Shough on 3rd and 7, and another roughing the passer gave the Panthers a first down on a 3rd and 7 incompletion. Thankfully these penalties did not cost them the game, but this is still an issue that needs to be addressed very soon.

The Ugly: Third down efficiency

The Saints offense converted on 8 of 17 third downs on Sunday. They won the game, but the offense gained 388 yards and only scored 17 points. They punted the same amount of times as Carolina and also settled for a 21-yard field goal. Many opportunities were left on the field, ones that they are not going to be able to get away with missing if the defense is unable to replicate its great performance from this week.

Navigating The Saints’ Week 11 Bye and Your Fantasy Lineup

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

The mid-to-late season bye weeks are always a headache for fantasy managers, and Week 11 brings the Bayou blues with the New Orleans Saints hitting their off-week. While the Saints’ offense hasn’t been a model of consistency, they have a handful of players who are must-starts when they are on the field. Losing them, especially key contributors like Alvin Kamara and the quietly consistent Juwan Johnson, forces immediate action for managers fighting for a playoff spot.

This bye week isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it’s a critical stress test of your roster depth.

The Fantasy Fallout: Who Hurts the Most?

  • Alvin Kamara (RB): He remains the engine of the Saints’ offense, particularly in PPR formats where his receiving work is invaluable. His high-end RB1/low-end RB2 production is difficult to replicate. Losing him means a massive hole in your starting lineup, and you can’t afford a zero from the position.
  • Chris Olave (WR): Olave has navigated the Saints’ inconsistent quarterback carousel (Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler have both seen action) to deliver respectable, if sometimes volatile, WR2 numbers. He is the clear top target, and his deep threat ability means he offers high upside every week.
  • Juwan Johnson (TE): The biggest surprise fantasy asset on the Saints is arguably Johnson. He is currently ranked as a TE1 (TE8 overall) and has been on a tear with four straight weeks of solid production. In the wasteland that is fantasy tight end, losing him is a genuine problem.
  • Tyler Shough (QB) / Saints D/ST: While Shough and the Saints Defense are more often streamable options than locked-in starters, managers who have been using them need to find a one-week replacement.

Waiver Wire Replacements: Scouting the Streams

The waiver wire is thin, but desperation breeds creativity. Here are some of my top suggestions for fantasy managers needing a one-week plug-and-play for their missing Saints.

Alvin Kamara (RB): Replacement Strategy: Target a volume-driven RB in a favorable matchup, or a pass-catching specialist for PPR.

Chris Olave (WR): Look for a high-target-share player with a decent QB in a game with a high over/under

Juwan Johnson (TE): The classic Tight End Stream—look for targets and a good red-zone matchup.

Saints D/ST: Stream based on matchup. Target bad offenses, especially those starting backup QBs or those with high turnover rates.

Final Opinion: A Small Bye, a Big Impact

Only two teams are on bye in Week 11 (Colts and Saints), which means the overall waiver wire isn’t completely barren. However, the quality of players missing from the Saints’ roster, particularly Kamara and Johnson, makes this a high-impact bye week for managers who rely on them.

The key to surviving this week is prioritizing opportunity over star power. Don’t chase the big name; chase the big snap count and the good matchup. Getting one decent week out of your replacement is all you need before you can welcome your Saints back for a key Week 12 divisional matchup against the Falcons.

Let us know in the comments below on who you are starting this week.

Saints power ranking entering Week 11

imagn-27558350.jpg

NFL.com – 31 (-1)

Tyler Shough leveled up from his first start to his second, delivering some big throws in a statement road victory at Carolina. The Saints only scored 17 points, running their streak of games under 20 points to five, but it was arguably their best offensive showing, even after they traded away two starters at the deadline (WR Rashid Shaheed and OT Trevor Penning). New Orleans logged a season-high 388 yards, zero offensive turnovers and just two offensive penalties (though both were annoying flags in high-leverage spots). Shough stood up to a lot of Panthers blitzes and made clutch connections with Chris Olave and Juwan Johnson. It was an encouraging development for a rookie QB who has a chance to prove he deserves to start in 2026.“

Fox Sports – 29 (+2)

“Rookie QB Tyler Shough picked up his first career win, and on the road against a tough Carolina team. It was the first sign of a potentially bright future in New Orleans.“

Bleacher Report – 29 (+)

“At the end of the day, Sunday’s win in Carolina doesn’t change much in New Orleans.

The Saints are still a bad team that will likely be looking for a long-term quarterback in next year’s draft. But while addressing the media, rookie signal-caller Tyler Shough said it still felt good to win.

“It was a great feeling in the locker room I think, with everybody just kind of dancing, you’re having fun in there, but it just kind of came down to just playing complimentary football and we played together,” he said.

The 26-year-old was sharp in Week 10, becoming the first Saints rookie to win a start under center since Dave Wilson in 1981.

New Orleans will get to enjoy its off week, but this remains a cellar-dweller headed for a full rebuild—and Shough’s professional future is probably as a backup. — Davenport

CBS Sports – 29 (+1)

“Winning at Carolina is nice, but the big thing was that Tyler Shough seems to be making progress. Could he be their long-term guy?”

Sports Illustrated – 30 (+2)

“Good for Tyler Shough—and for Kellen Moore. With a super beat up offensive line and one of the Saints’ best receivers having been shipped away at the trade deadline, Shough became the first Saints rookie quarterback to win a game since 1981, which feels incredibly made up but is, in fact, not.”

SB Nation Reacts Results: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

It’s Week 11 of the NFL season, and the New Orleans Saints are on a much-needed bye week after playing 10 games resulting in a 2-8 record and losing several players for the season due to injury. However, they will go into Week 12 on a high note after rookie QB Tyler Shough led the team to a win over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Saints head coach Kellen Moore said of the game that it was nice to see complementary football in all 3 phases and hopefully something they can build upon.

So, in this week’s SB Nation Reacts poll we asked our readers if they felt that the Saints are headed in the right direction with 65% saying yes, they are feeling confident after the victory in Charlotte.

After their bye week, the Saints will take on their archrival, the Atlanta Falcons, in Caesars Superdome on Sunday, November 23rd, and hopefully can keep their win streak alive.

College football players to watch- NCAA Week 12

gettyimages-2244019159.jpg

Another college football Saturday has made its way around the calendar. This weekend is jam-packed with marquee matchups, including four top-25 clashes. Here are the players that I am going to be watching in their games.

Julian Neal

gettyimages-2234480948.jpg

Arkansas’ Neal is a top member of a Razorback team that has struggled this season. The 6’2” cornerback from California has been solid with two interceptions and eight passes defensed thus far. He and Arkansas face off against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge this Saturday.

DJ Campbell

gettyimages-2244318122.jpg

The Longhorns of Texas square off against the Georgia Bulldogs in what should be a highly competitive top-ten game this weekend in college football. One player that Saints fans and I should keep a close watch on is guard DJ Campbell. He stands tall at 6’3”, 321 lbs., and serves as a critical piece to the interior of Texas’ offensive line.

Max Klare

gettyimages-2238608764.jpg

Ohio State’s Max Klare is currently projected to go sometime within the middle portion of the upcoming NFL Draft. The 6’5” pass catcher has nearly 300 receiving yards along with a touchdown on 26 receptions this year. A reliable target with strong hands and size is exactly the type of prospect Saints fans should keep an eye on this weekend.

What are some other names you’re keeping an eye on as we inch closer towards bowl season? Are there any players in particular that you’re hoping to see in a Saints’ uniform in 2026? Let us hear it in the comments!

Saints 2026 draft position after Week 10: Second Round Edition

gettyimages-2242378320.jpg

Officially, I have gone through every single prospect the New Orleans Saints can realistically select at the top of the draft. So, with that being the case, I’m going to focus on the second round is this edition.

With their win against the Carolina Panthers, the Saints are now slated to select at pick #2 in the first round, and in the second round, their projected pick is #36.

gettyimages-2246184127.jpg

After the Saints traded away Rashid Shaheed at the deadline, WR became a much bigger need, and the Saints need more contested catch threats in that room. Here enters Jakobi Lane. At USC, Lane is a premier pass catcher who can make spectacular catches look easy. He can adjust to any throw and box out defenders to make a catch. He is the perfect redzone threat and is actually pretty good running after the catch. His most significant issue is going to be separation, but that won’t be what the Saints need him for.

As I mentioned, the Saints are missing size in the WR room. Yes, Devaughn Vele would be a bit of a similar receiver, but Lane has the top-end potential to be a WR1 in the league. Still, it’s more realistic for him to be WR2, which is the perfect opposite of Chris Olave.

gettyimages-2237430405.jpg

This is a bit of a new name to the second round, but CB Chris Jonson deserves it. This season, Johnson has been a playmaker all over the field, with three interceptions, six pass deflections, and one forced fumble. His strength lies in zone coverage, where he is highly talented at reading the play and breaking up the catch. Man coverage is not his strong suit, but that is fine for what the Saints would be drafting him for. Perhaps my favorite part of his game actually comes from special teams, where he is a difference-maker.

Zone coverage is a staple of the Saints’ defense, but the issue is that most of the Saints’ CBs are not great in that area. It is a personnel issue right now, and with Alontae Taylor possibly leaving in free agency, New Orleans will need another CB before next season starts.

If Saints win/lose vs. Falcons

imagn-27546357.jpg

The New Orleans Saints are coming off a bye week as they host the rival Atlanta Falcons in the Caesars Superdome on Sunday. Here’s a look ahead at what either result could mean in the first of two divisional clashes between the teams this season.

If the Saints win:

If New Orleans runs over Atlanta, it will lift them off the bottom of the NFC South and give Tyler Shough a 2-1 record as an NFL starter. The momentum will be palpable should the Saints win back-to-back games, regardless of what happens down the stretch of the season.

Just as we said ahead of Week 10’s visit to Carolina, it’s nice to win divisional matchups. Playoffs, the NFL Draft, and everything else aside, defending your home field against the Falcons is always cause for celebration, and it’s something the Saints have had relative success within recent seasons.

The black and gold were staring into the abyss at 1-8, and the season felt lost to some. Winning consecutive games against divisional opposition, with the rookie quarterback making a great impression, will at the very least revive some good vibes among the Who Dat Nation.

If the Saints lose:

A defeat on Sunday would be more disappointing than most others the Saints have suffered this season. Not only is it their arch-rival, but the Falcons are also set to be missing key personnel in Michael Penix Jr. and Drake London.

These injuries have more than opened the door for a frisky Saints offense to get this game won with a good performance. Atlanta is also ice cold, having lost their previous five games.

So a loss would sting, albeit with improved draft position serving as a consolation.

How are you feeling ahead of Sunday? Will the Saints get above .500 against their NFC South competition with a win? Let us know in the comments!

SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

imagn-24730486.jpg

New Orleans Saints will head into this week’s matchup at home against the Atlanta Falcons hopefully well-rested and fully healthy after their bye week and defeating the Carolina Panthers on the road in Week 10. The Saints are also hoping to keep that win streak alive as the Falcons have now lost 5 games in a row as well as QB Michael Penix Jr. for the season. They will also be without their star WR Drake London, who was already ruled out this week, which doesn’t fare well for Atlanta trying to improve upon their 3-7 record.

However, after the Saints performance against the Panthers, there are a lot of reasons for them to be optimistic about this Sunday’s game but as always, we want to hear from you. After the Saints bye week and last Sunday’s win, how are you feeling about the team? “Are you confident the Saints are headed in the right direction?” Vote in this week’s poll and let us know!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Saints fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Saints power ranking entering Week 12

imagn-27545919.jpg

NFL.com – 30 (+1)

“After beating Carolina in Week 10, the Saints will come out of their Week 11 bye with a chance to make it two straight wins when they face the Falcons in a game that has suddenly become a battle for third place in the NFC South, thanks to Atlanta’s losing streak. This will give Tyler Shough (vs. Kirk Cousins) a chance to vanquish another division opponent and build off a solid outing against the Panthers. The rest of this season should be used to determine where Shough is in his development and whether the Saints must consider a quarterback in the next draft. That answer is likely no right now, but that shouldn’t be something that is settled in November. Changes are coming this offseason, but perhaps a lot of the big pieces — head coach, GM and QB — will remain the same.“

Fox Sports – 30 (-1)

“There’s a real chance for growth down the stretch from rookie QB Tyler Shough. The Saints play just one more opponent that currently has a winning record.“

Bleacher Report – 29 (=)

“The Saints entered their bye on a high note after knocking off the rival Carolina Panthers. The schedule sets up favorably coming out of New Orleans’ off-week, too.

Facing the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins in back-to-back contests gives the Saints a legitimate chance to improve upon their 2-8 record.

Wins will also indicate rookie quarterback Tyler Shough is playing well. The most important aspect of New Orleans’ upcoming schedule is whether he is prepared to take over the offense through the rest of the 2025 campaign and into the future. His second start was promising.

The second-round rookie needs to stack quality outings and prove the Saints don’t need to draft another quarterback. — Sobleski

CBS Sports – 29 (=)

“The rest of this season has to be about Tyler Shough’s growth. They have to find out if he’s their guy.”

Sports Illustrated – 26 (+4)

“The rest of this season has to be about Tyler Shough’s growth. They have to find out if he’s their guy.”

Falcons’ QB Penix, WR London to miss Saints clash

imagn-24730517.jpg

The Saints have the first of two matchups against divisional rival Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, who will be without a few key offensive personnel.

Adam Schefter reported that quarterback Michael Penix Jr had suffered a potentially season-ending injury against the Carolina Panthers, while Ian Rapaport revealed that a PCL strain will keep star wide receiver Drake London out of Sunday’s game in New Orleans.

The injuries will leave Atlanta without its top receiver, and Kirk Cousins will slide in to start at quarterback.

Penix has had a number of impressive games this season, though the Falcons are amidst a 5-game losing streak. London has posted over 800 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns already this season, and will be a big miss for head coach Raheem Morris’ team.

With Atlanta shorthanded on the offensive side of the ball, the Saints will be hoping to capitalize as they come off their bye week.
