If Saints win/lose vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2244680681.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will play their first road divisional game of the season as they take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Here’s what either outcome could mean for the black and gold.

If the Saints win

Despite sitting at 1-8, it’s nice to win NFC South matchups. And a win on this occasion means aspects must’ve gone well for the Saints, starting with Tyler Shough’s performance at quarterback.

Yes, many are looking beyond the 2025 season already. But there’s a lot of football still to be played, and head coach Kellen Moore’s full focus will be on getting his first road win. The black and gold are just 1-3 in their last four visits to Charlotte; they’ll be looking to improve their fortunes this weekend.

If the Saints lose

Another defeat on Sunday is another step closer to the NFL Draft in the eyes of many fans. The inability to build off the win against the Giants has left New Orleans at the bottom of the league, and a loss to Carolina will keep them there.

There are always things to look out for, win or lose, and on this occasion, it will be another look at Shough at quarterback. Everyone will be hoping for him to improve on his first game last week, regardless of the result.

How do you feel ahead of Sunday? Do you see the Saints upsetting their divisional opponents on the road? Let us know in the comments!

Saints power ranking entering Week 10

gettyimages-2244697336.jpg

NFL.com – 31 (-1)

“The Saints had a chance to change the trajectory of Sunday’s game against the Rams, trailing only 20-10 at halftime. But a 10-minute TD drive by L.A. and a New Orleans fumble at midfield turned it into a laugher — the Saints’ fifth loss of the season by double digits. Tyler Shough had some good throws in his first NFL start and led a solid TD drive just before halftime, but the second-round pick had only nine completions through three quarters. Part of that was because the Rams controlled the clock, with nearly a three-to-one advantage in time of possession, gaining 30 first downs on 77 plays. After a respectable defensive showing in Week 8, the Saints were flat-out bad Sunday.“

Fox Sports – 31 (-1)

“It’s all about rookie QB Tyler Shough now. He had no shot at the Rams on Sunday, but at least he wasn’t a total disaster (15 for 24, 176 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) in his first start.“

Bleacher Report – 30 (=)

“The New Orleans Saints’ blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams shouldn’t really move the needle for anyone. The Saints gave a rookie quarterback his first career start on the road against one of the best teams in the entire league.

As expected, it did not go well.

New Orleans needs to evaluate its younger players over the second half of the season, especially QB Tyler Shough. A top-10 pick in the 2026 draft feels like a lock for the Saints. — Knox”

CBS Sports – 30 (=)

“Tyler Shough’s first start wasn’t great, but he did do some encouraging things. They need to find out who he is as a quarterback the rest of the way.”

Sports Illustrated – 32 (-3)

“The Saints need to blow it all up this afternoon at the deadline. Stats like these are not indicative of a team that deserves to play together. ”

Saints 2026 draft position after Week 9

gettyimages-2244553922.jpg

With another loss, the New Orleans Saints still have the #1 pick in the draft. Last week, I did a 3-round mock draft just in case the Saints lost the #1 spot, but they did not. For this week’s edition, I just wanted to talk about the one remaining prospect that is projected to be selected at or around the #1 pick, and that is Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza.

gettyimages-2243632469.jpg

The Saints and the QB position have been an interesting conversation all season. There is still doubt about who can be the starter for the future, and as of right now, the only answer is that Spencer Rattler is not in the running. That just leaves QB Tyler Shough as the only potential option on the roster. Given our current position in the season and the early stage of Shough’s “tryout” for the starting job, there is no reason to say that the Saints should either give up on the rookie or anoint him as the future. Still, keeping all options in mind is important just in case the Saints decide Shough is not going to cut it as the long-term starter, and this is where Fernando Mendoza comes into play.

Coming into the CFB Season, Mendoza transferred to Indiana from Cal, and he has not looked back. Indiana has become one of the top teams in the country, Mendoza is a Heisman contender, and he is the favorite to become the top pick in the NFL Draft. There is real hype behind the third-year QB, but why?

Well, Mendoza is nearly everything teams want in a QB. He is 6-foot-5, has excellent accuracy, is extremely smart, has good arm talent, and can run the ball (although not a great athlete). He also has 30 career starts in college football so far, which is around the target area for QB prospects. Mendoza’s one-year burst onto the scene is a bit of a worry, but he showed many og his abilities at Cal, and has just developed into a better QB, which is a great sign.

Now, for the Saints, Mendoza would have to be considered as an option if they keep the #1 pick. If they believe he can be the franchise, draft him; if not, trade back and allow one of the other QB-needy teams to do it. Due to the trades the Jets made at the NFL Trade Deadline, they are the favorites to end up with the first pick in the draft. Saying this, the NFL can be unpredictable at times, and we may be discussing the draft in April, with the Saints holding the top pick and potentially trading back with the Jets.

SB Nation Reacts Results: What is the biggest area of concern that the Saints are facing on offense?

gettyimages-2243660850.jpg

It’s already Week 10 of the NFL season and the New Orleans Saints are off to their worst start in 40 years. Sitting at 1-8, and in the middle of the rebuilding year with a new head coach, offensive and defensive coordinator, not much has gone right for the Saints so far. Especially on offense, who has struggled to put up points this season. So much so that a change came at quarterback in favor of the Saints 2nd round draft pick Tyler Shough, who will know take the reins for the rest of the season and hopefully create a spark on the field and the scoreboard.

So, in this week’s reacts poll, we asked our readers what they felt has been the biggest area of concern on the Saints offense.

NewOrleans_2_110625.png

NewOrleans_1_110625.png

An overwhelming 61% of voters said it is the offensive line with just 33% saying that they felt confident in the direction of the team, which is not surprising given their disappointing 1-8 record.

Next up for the Saints, a road matchup on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte. Let’s hope they can bring home a win.

Key matchups: Saints vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2245173932.jpg

Saints pass rush vs. Panthers QB Bryce Young

gettyimages-2245173944.jpg

We have seen in the past how Bryce Young responds to a heavy pass rush. In the Saints’ 2024 season opener, Young ended the day with 2 interceptions on 13/30 passing as the New Orleans defense mauled him for four sacks, including three from cornerback Alontae Taylor. While the Saints already had a solid four sacks, their pass rush for the day was even fiercer than the numbers suggest.

But the pass rush in New Orleans might be more talented this time around. Since returning from injury, Chase Young has looked like one of the league’s best from his position, and while Carl Granderson hasn’t produced much over the last few weeks, he had a strong start to the season. The Saints’ defense was picked apart by Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams after having strong performances against the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now going against one of the league’s most inconsistent quarterbacks, who likes to turn the ball over, the Saints’ defense must cause havoc.

Alvin Kamara vs. Panthers run defense

gettyimages-2244236274.jpg

The Panthers’ run defense ranks just outside the bottom-10, being ranked the 11th worst in the NFL in total rushing yards allowed and 9th in yards per carry. Despite Carolina’s run defense struggles, the Saints’ run game is practically nonexistent. Veteran Alvin Kamara reached 30+ rushing yards just once in their last four games, rushing for 31 yards against the New England Patriots.

Tyler Shough played well enough in his first career start. Some things stood out and impressed, while others are clear problems. But the Saints could make life easier on the rookie and give him a viable run game to take some of the pressure off. Rattler struggled with the lack of a run game, and Shough will be no different.

Panthers WRs vs. Saints secondary

gettyimages-2245173171.jpg

The Saints’ secondary had their worst showing of the season against the Rams. Matthew Stafford picked the defense apart with little to no pushback. Part of the Rams’ unstoppable offense was the playmakers they have at wide receiver. Davante Adams and Puka Nacua are some of the league’s top wideouts and showed out against a young New Orleans secondary.

Luckily for the Saints, the Panthers don’t have any of the league’s top-end talent at wideout, but they have plenty of promising playmakers. Rookie Tetairoa McMillan was the eighth overall pick of the draft and is as promising a wide receiver prospect as they come. At 6-foot-5, McMillan has the height and athleticism to take over a game. The promising rookie has already logged 558 yards on the season and is on pace for a 1,000-yard season.

On the other side of McMillan is another young talent, Xavier Legette. The former South Carolina wide receiver was Carolina’s first-round pick in 2024, and while not having the success of McMillan, he has the talent to take over. The Saints’ defense needs to limit the separation between the Panthers’ young playmakers and make Bryce Young force throws into tight windows.

NFL on FOX – Week 10

New Orleans Saints (1-8) at Carolina Panthers (5-4)

The New Orleans Saints travel to Charlotte looking to get their first road win of the season. Things have become more dire for the Saints than fans have seen in two decades. Another loss keeps the Saints on path for the top-overall pick in next year’s draft, while a Saints win doesn’t really do much of the team on paper. Football isn’t played on paper though. It’s difficult to root for a loss or draft picks once the game kicks off. No matter if its a winning season or a losing one, nothing makes Sundays better than a Saints victory.

What are the odds? Week 11 NFC South edition

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

On Sunday, New Orleans Saints dominated the Carolina Panthers 17-7 to improve to 2-8 on the season. This game gave fans a lot of hope for the future as rookie QB Tyler Shough had a franchise record setting day, completing 19 of 27 passes for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns. The last time a Saints quarterback threw for 2+ touchdown passes and no interceptions in one of his first 2 career starts was Archie Manning (155 yards) back in 1971 against the San Francisco 49ers. With this victory, Shough also becomes the first rookie QB since Dave Wilson in 1981 to win a game for the Saints.

New Orleans will now head into their bye week with a lot of momentum and plenty of time to rest up and get some key guys healthy before a matchup against their NFC South rival, the Atlanta Falcons on November 23rd in the Caesars Superdome.

Speaking of the Falcons, let’s take a look at the rest of the division headed into Week 11.

Atlanta Falcons:

The Falcons fly into Week 11 at 3-6 after a 31-25 loss in overtime to the Indianapolis Colts in Berlin. The Falcons have now dropped four games in a row and fallen out of playoff contention. Next up for the dirty birds is a divisional battle against the Carolina Panthers.

According to FanDuel, the Falcons are currently 3.5-point favorites at home vs. the Panthers with over/under currently at 42.5 points.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

The Buccaneers also lost yesterday dropping to 6-3 after a 28-23 loss to the New England Patriots. Even with yesterday’s loss the Bucs continue to sit on the top of NFC South, with a one game lead over the Panthers. However their next matchup is a tough one, as they head up to Buffalo to take on the Bills, who are also 6-3.

According to FanDuel, the Bucs are currently 5.5-point underdogs vs. the Bills with over/under currently at 49.5 points.

Carolina Panthers:

It wasn’t a good day in Charlotte, as the Panthers fell to 5-5 on the season after their loss to the Saints. Bryce Young threw for just 124 yards with one interception as the Saints defense locked up their star RB Rico Dowdle, allowing him to rush for just 53 yards and Carolina’s lone touchdown of the day. Next up for the Panthers is another divisional matchup against the Falcons in Atlanta.

According to FanDuel, the Panthers are currently 3.5-point underdogs vs. the Falcons with over/under currently at 42.5 points.

Overreactions: Saints vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2245869972.jpg

The New Orleans Saints returned to the win column for only the second time this season, defeating the Carolina Panthers 17-7 in Week 10 of the 2025 NFL season at Bank of America Stadium. Here’s the biggest overreaction from this weekend’s matchup:

gettyimages-2245869898.jpg

Is Juwan Johnson having a career year?

This week, I’m revisiting something I was adamant about after the Saints’ Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears—and thankfully, it never happened. After weeks of poor blocking and a number of crucial drops, I felt strongly that New Orleans should have benched sixth-year TE Juwan Johnson, who signed a three-year, $30.75 million extension this offseason. Since then, the 29-year-old has become rookie QB Tyler Shough’s—his college roommate at Oregon—safety blanket, proving that benching him would have been an overreaction.

On Sunday against Carolina, Johnson hauled in four receptions for 92 yards, including a 52-yard explosive play and a 30-yard touchdown catch on third-and-long—his 21st career TD reception, tying him with TE Hoby Brenner for third in franchise history.

Through 10 games, Johnson has 43 catches (6th among TEs) for 491 yards (4th among TEs) and three touchdowns, averaging 11.4 yards per catch—just seven receptions and 57 yards shy of matching the career highs he set last season. He’s also only four targets away from matching his single-season high of 64, while his 288 yards after the catch rank 6th among TEs and his 24 first downs rank 5th.

HC Kellen Moore said this offseason that he and Johnson had a long talk during free agency to convince him to re-sign with New Orleans, promising him a significant role in the offense—and that promise has clearly been fulfilled.

Johnson shared his thoughts following the victory in Charlotte:

#Saints TE Juwan Johnson said yesterday's game was a foundation to build upon. He said they played some good football but not their best football yet. They have a lot of games ahead of them still and have to keep improving.

Game Recap: Saints @ Panthers

gettyimages-2245871539.jpg

The New Orleans Saints were in Carolina to take on the Panthers in Week 10. Here’s a recap of the first matchup of the season between the divisional rivals.

First Quarter

The hosts got the action underway with quarterback Bryce Young finding Tetairoa McMillan with his first throw. He’d find McMillan again for 11 yards on the drive’s biggest play as the Panthers moved into Saints territory, with a pair of penalties against the defense helping matters, including a roughing the passer against Justin Reid that cancelled out an interception by Demario Davis.

From there, it was Rico Dowdle who did the rest of the damage, finishing with a 5-yard touchdown run to put Carolina up 7-0.

The Saints and quarterback Tyler Shough, making his second start as a pro, looked to find an instant response. Shough’s first throw went 52 yards to Juwan Johnson, before a 14-yard run from Devin Neal put the visitors in the red zone.

Despite finding Foster Moreau to set up 1st-and-goal, New Orleans was unable to find the red zone. Blake Grupe chipped through a short field goal to make it 7-3.

Carolina got the ball back and began the drive with a 14-yard run from Dowdle, but they would fail to find another first down and punted. The Saints then went three-and-out and punted to begin the second quarter.

Second Quarter

Nathan Shepherd sacked Young as Carolina would go three-and-out again, and the Saints looked to stop the streak of punts.

After short runs from Alvin Kamara, Taysom Hill on 4th-and-1, and Shough himself to begin the drive, the quarterback would make the play of the day with a 62-yard dime to Chris Olave for a touchdown. Grupe’s extra point gave the Saints a 10-7 lead.

The teams then exchanged four consecutive punts, with a 26-yard catch from Kamara, an 18-yard catch by Olave, and a sack by Cam Jordan being the highlights from the Saints on those drives.

Carolina had just 21 seconds to work with before the half, with which they failed to do anything.

Third Quarter

A holding penalty against Dillon Radunz limited the Saints’ drive to open the second half, and they quickly punted.

The Panthers finally found a groove on the ensuing drive, including a 26-yard pass from Young to McMillan. Ryan Fitzgerald had his 48-yard field goal attempt to tie the game blocked by Shepherd, but a bounce against a Panthers player and eventual muffed recovery by Cam Jordan led to a Panthers recovery. The drive would still end with no points, as Pete Werner recovered the football after Young fumbled in the red zone.

Kamara found the bulk of the yards on the Saints’ next drive before the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Facing 4th-and-4 on the Panthers’ 32-yard line, Shough was sacked.

But Carolina was unable to punish the turnover, as Alontae Taylor intercepted Young just a play later.

The Saints took advantage of the short field, as Shough connected with Juwan Johnson on a 30-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead for the black and gold.

The Panthers then had a turnover on downs of their own, which would be the last time their offense saw the ball. New Orleans was able to see out over seven minutes of game clock to secure the 17-7 win, their first road victory of the season and first professional win in a start for Shough.

The Saints now enter their bye week at 2-8 before another NFC South rival, the Atlanta Falcons, pay a visit to the Caesars Superdome on November 23.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from the Saints win against the Panthers

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

The Good: Tyler Shough and the defense

New Orleans Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough finished his second career start with 282 yards on 19/27 passing and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. Shough found Chris Olave for a 62-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to give the Saints a 10-7 lead. Shough would late ice the game for good with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson in the 4th quarter to put them ahead by two possessions. The rookie has looked better and better with each appearance and now has a chance to build some confidence as the Saints schedule eases up down the stretch (5 of their next 7 opponents are multiple gams under .500). The Saints defense also deserves some props for their performance on Sunday, as they surrendered the fewest amount of points since Week 15 in 2023. After giving up an opening drive TD, the Panthers next four drives gained 17 yards on 13 plays and resulted in four punts. In the second half the Saints defense got two takeaways to help shut the door on Carolina this week.

imagn-27545515.jpg

The Bad: Penalties

Penalties again plagued the Saints on Sunday, as they were flagged 6 times for a total of 60 yards. An offside by Bryan Bresee turned a 3rd and 8 into a 3rd and 3 which was converted for a 1st down, and a roughing the passer wiped out an interception on the Panthers opening touchdown drive. A holding wiped out a first down scramble by Shough on 3rd and 7, and another roughing the passer gave the Panthers a first down on a 3rd and 7 incompletion. Thankfully these penalties did not cost them the game, but this is still an issue that needs to be addressed very soon.

The Ugly: Third down efficiency

The Saints offense converted on 8 of 17 third downs on Sunday. They won the game, but the offense gained 388 yards and only scored 17 points. They punted the same amount of times as Carolina and also settled for a 21-yard field goal. Many opportunities were left on the field, ones that they are not going to be able to get away with missing if the defense is unable to replicate its great performance from this week.

Navigating The Saints’ Week 11 Bye and Your Fantasy Lineup

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

The mid-to-late season bye weeks are always a headache for fantasy managers, and Week 11 brings the Bayou blues with the New Orleans Saints hitting their off-week. While the Saints’ offense hasn’t been a model of consistency, they have a handful of players who are must-starts when they are on the field. Losing them, especially key contributors like Alvin Kamara and the quietly consistent Juwan Johnson, forces immediate action for managers fighting for a playoff spot.

This bye week isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it’s a critical stress test of your roster depth.

The Fantasy Fallout: Who Hurts the Most?

  • Alvin Kamara (RB): He remains the engine of the Saints’ offense, particularly in PPR formats where his receiving work is invaluable. His high-end RB1/low-end RB2 production is difficult to replicate. Losing him means a massive hole in your starting lineup, and you can’t afford a zero from the position.
  • Chris Olave (WR): Olave has navigated the Saints’ inconsistent quarterback carousel (Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler have both seen action) to deliver respectable, if sometimes volatile, WR2 numbers. He is the clear top target, and his deep threat ability means he offers high upside every week.
  • Juwan Johnson (TE): The biggest surprise fantasy asset on the Saints is arguably Johnson. He is currently ranked as a TE1 (TE8 overall) and has been on a tear with four straight weeks of solid production. In the wasteland that is fantasy tight end, losing him is a genuine problem.
  • Tyler Shough (QB) / Saints D/ST: While Shough and the Saints Defense are more often streamable options than locked-in starters, managers who have been using them need to find a one-week replacement.

Waiver Wire Replacements: Scouting the Streams

The waiver wire is thin, but desperation breeds creativity. Here are some of my top suggestions for fantasy managers needing a one-week plug-and-play for their missing Saints.

Alvin Kamara (RB): Replacement Strategy: Target a volume-driven RB in a favorable matchup, or a pass-catching specialist for PPR.

Chris Olave (WR): Look for a high-target-share player with a decent QB in a game with a high over/under

Juwan Johnson (TE): The classic Tight End Stream—look for targets and a good red-zone matchup.

Saints D/ST: Stream based on matchup. Target bad offenses, especially those starting backup QBs or those with high turnover rates.

Final Opinion: A Small Bye, a Big Impact

Only two teams are on bye in Week 11 (Colts and Saints), which means the overall waiver wire isn’t completely barren. However, the quality of players missing from the Saints’ roster, particularly Kamara and Johnson, makes this a high-impact bye week for managers who rely on them.

The key to surviving this week is prioritizing opportunity over star power. Don’t chase the big name; chase the big snap count and the good matchup. Getting one decent week out of your replacement is all you need before you can welcome your Saints back for a key Week 12 divisional matchup against the Falcons.

Saints power ranking entering Week 11

NFL.com – 31 (-1)

“Tyler Shough leveled up from his first start to his second, delivering some big throws in a statement road victory at Carolina. The Saints only scored 17 points, running their streak of games under 20 points to five, but it was arguably their best offensive showing, even after they traded away two starters at the deadline (WR Rashid Shaheed and OT Trevor Penning). New Orleans logged a season-high 388 yards, zero offensive turnovers and just two offensive penalties (though both were annoying flags in high-leverage spots). Shough stood up to a lot of Panthers blitzes and made clutch connections with Chris Olave and Juwan Johnson. It was an encouraging development for a rookie QB who has a chance to prove he deserves to start in 2026.“

Fox Sports – 29 (+2)

“Rookie QB Tyler Shough picked up his first career win, and on the road against a tough Carolina team. It was the first sign of a potentially bright future in New Orleans.“

Bleacher Report – 29 (+)

“At the end of the day, Sunday’s win in Carolina doesn’t change much in New Orleans.

The Saints are still a bad team that will likely be looking for a long-term quarterback in next year’s draft. But while addressing the media, rookie signal-caller Tyler Shough said it still felt good to win.

“It was a great feeling in the locker room I think, with everybody just kind of dancing, you’re having fun in there, but it just kind of came down to just playing complimentary football and we played together,” he said.

The 26-year-old was sharp in Week 10, becoming the first Saints rookie to win a start under center since Dave Wilson in 1981.

New Orleans will get to enjoy its off week, but this remains a cellar-dweller headed for a full rebuild—and Shough’s professional future is probably as a backup. — Davenport”

CBS Sports – 29 (+1)

“Winning at Carolina is nice, but the big thing was that Tyler Shough seems to be making progress. Could he be their long-term guy?”

Sports Illustrated – 30 (+2)

“Good for Tyler Shough—and for Kellen Moore. With a super beat up offensive line and one of the Saints’ best receivers having been shipped away at the trade deadline, Shough became the first Saints rookie quarterback to win a game since 1981, which feels incredibly made up but is, in fact, not.”

SB Nation Reacts Results: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2245885493.jpg

It’s Week 11 of the NFL season, and the New Orleans Saints are on a much-needed bye week after playing 10 games resulting in a 2-8 record and losing several players for the season due to injury. However, they will go into Week 12 on a high note after rookie QB Tyler Shough led the team to a win over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Saints head coach Kellen Moore said of the game that it was nice to see complementary football in all 3 phases and hopefully something they can build upon.

So, in this week’s SB Nation Reacts poll we asked our readers if they felt that the Saints are headed in the right direction with 65% saying yes, they are feeling confident after the victory in Charlotte.

After their bye week, the Saints will take on their archrival, the Atlanta Falcons, in Caesars Superdome on Sunday, November 23rd, and hopefully can keep their win streak alive.
