SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2239407129.jpg

Week 5 of the 2025 season saw the New Orleans Saints back home in the dome to take on the New York Giants. The Giants came into this game fresh off their first victory of the season, while the Saints were fighting hard to get theirs. While this game wasn’t on the radar of many outside of the team’s own fanbase, it was a great opportunity for the Saints to finally get over that hurdle they have been climbing each week and they did in spectacular fashion, as the defense came away with 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles. Not to be forgotten, the offensive line gave up no sacks this week, allowing Spencer Rattler to go 21/31 including one spectacular touchdown pass to Rashid Shaheed for 87 yards. It was the game the Saints needed to boost their confidence going into the 2nd quarter of their schedule with two very winnable games against the Patriots and Bears up next.

But as always, we want to hear from you. So, after Week 5, how are you feeling about the team? “Are you confident the Saints are headed in the right direction?” Vote in this week’s poll and let us know!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Saints fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

State of the NFC South: Entering Week 6

gettyimages-2239428584.jpg

The Atlanta Falcons are the only NFC South team on bye, but for the rest of the teams, it was a perfect week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After losing to the Eagles last week, the Buccaneers hoped to bounce back with a win. Their opponent, the Seahawks, would not be an easy win, but Tampa Bay still got in done. The game ended in an electric 38-35, and it was a shootout the entire day. QB Baker Mayfield had an excellent day with 379 passing yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Although he was the main reason the Bucs stayed in this game, the defense got the Seahawks to turn the ball over twice, which kept Seattle QB Sam Darnold from winning this game. This was yet another game the Buccaneers barely won, but they got it done

Carolina Panthers

Turnovers are usually the difference in many games, like with the Buccaneers and the Saints, which will get to next. For the Panthers, this was not the case in their win over the Dolphins. QB Bryce Young was intercepted, fumbled the ball, and the Dolphins did not turn the ball over, but somehow, the Panthers won 27-24, so how? Lucky for Carolina, Miami has one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. RB Rico Dowdle finished with over 200 yards and had a touchdown. The funny thing is, the Dolphins running offense may have been just as bad. This was a close game, but somehow Miami ran 14 times, with only 19 yards. Could this be due to the Panthers run defense being decent? Maybe. The issue is the Dolphins barely even tested the Panthers, and Carolina took advantage of this.

New Orleans Saints

It happened. The New Orleans Saints have won their first game of the season and completed the perfect week for the NFC South. I mentioned it before, but turnovers were the major difference in this game. After going up 14-3, the New York Giants turned the ball over 5 straight times (3 fumbles and 2 interceptions). QB Spencer Rattler and head coach Kellen Moore are developing their skills right before our eyes, the young players have stepped up with big plays, the offensive line did not give up a sack against one of the best defensive lines in the league, and rookie safety Jonas Sanker looks to be competing for Defensive Rookie of the Year. This was the first step for the rebuilding Saints, and now, the team is looking to build upon this success.

Current NFC South Standings

  1. Buccaneers (3-1)
  2. Falcons (2-2)
  3. Panthers (2-3)
  4. Saints (1-4)

The New Orleans Saints have given three players game-day designations for Sunday’s matchup with the New England Patriots. Defensive tackle John Ridgeway III and running back Alvin Kamara were ruled questionable. Kamara suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s win over the Giants and has been limited all week. Cornerback Isaac Yiadom was the only player ruled out for New Orleans for Sunday as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Notably, defensive end Chase Young is set to make his season debut after suffering an injury before Week 1.

The Patriots listed seven players with game-day designations, including four players who are out and three who are questionable. Standout defensive end Keion White was ruled out with an elbow injury, while star cornerback Christian Gonzalez is questionable after being limited for the last two practices.

Our defense vs. their offense: New England Patriots

gettyimages-2239431958.jpg

The New Orleans Saints’ defense played its best game of the year, arguably last week versus the New York Giants. They forced five total turnovers by way of three fumbles and two interceptions. Brandon Staley’s group will look to replicate success and carry over that mojo when they square off with the New England Patriots on Sunday.

New England is led by quarterback Drake Maye, who is toting a 3.5 TD:INT through Week 5. With receivers like Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, they are able to spread the football around on the field with ease.

New Orleans’ safeties played a terrific game against the New York Giants last week and will need to continue to progress as they try to limit the passing attack of the Patriots. Jordan Howden and Jonas Sanker have really stepped up and demonstrated dependability at the position for the Saints, with starters Julian Blackmon and Justin Reid currently out with injuries.

Along the offensive line of the Patriots is a first-round draft pick of this year’s NFL draft class, Will Campbell. Campbell, who spent his collegiate career as a member of the LSU Tigers, will be making a return to Louisiana to play in front of some hometown fans.

Campbell’s impressive play at left tackle will be an interesting matchup to watch through the duration of Sunday’s contest as he battles with a feisty Saints’ pass rush.

Patriots’ tight end Hunter Henry should be a key factor in this weekend’s game. New Orleans has seemed to struggle defending TEs this year, and another one of Maye’s targets should be no exception. Henry can stretch the field in seams, but can also secure the ball in difficult-to-catch scenarios.

Both teams should head into this matchup with the belief that they can come out victorious. This game should be an exciting watch and provide some highlight reel-worthy plays. Let’s see if the Saints can pick up some steam and earn their second win of the year.

SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2240625824.jpg

Week 6 of the 2025 season saw the New Orleans Saints back home in the dome to take on the New England Patriots who were fresh off a triumphant victory over the Buffalo Bills. This game was one that despite the Saints being the underdog, they could possibly win if all the pieces came together, unfortunately they were unable to overcome their red zone struggles and pass rush issues, falling to the Pats 25-19 and 1-5 on the season.

The Saints will now head up to the Windy City to face a Chicago Bears team playing on a short week after their 25-24 win over the Commanders. Will losing an extra day off help the Saints beat the Bears? Can they get their first road win of the season? As always, we want to hear from you. So, after Week 6, how are you feeling about the team? “Are you confident the Saints are headed in the right direction?” Vote in this week’s poll and let us know!

Possible moves the Saints can make before the NFL trade deadline

imagn-27254668.jpg

Last year, when the trade deadline was creeping closer and closer, the feeling around the New Orleans Saints was that this team could be sellers at the trade deadline. If that was the case, which it was, CB Marshon Lattimore was the obvious choice to be traded. This turned out to be the one move the Saints made at the deadline, and looking back at the details of the trade, it was a great move by New Orleans.

Now, back to the present (or future…. get it?)

The NFL trade deadline is less than a month away, and the Saints are 1-5. This team could, probably not, but could turn this season around and win games. There has only been one game in which the Saints were absolutely dominated. Every other game was a few plays away from a result being changed, but looking at this in a realistic lens, the New Orleans must be sellers at the deadline. There are too many issues on the roster to trust what this team can currently do, and the Saints’ draft capital is not good due to moves made before the season. This is a rebuild, and if the Saints want to improve next season, they will make a move at the deadline.

But who could be traded away?

The WRs

1724544021.jpg

If there is any comparable move to the Marshon Lattimore trade last season, this would be the one. The Saints have an interesting situation on their hands with the WRs. Former first-round pick Chris Olave’s fifth-year option was picked up in the offseason, so he is under contract until the end of the 2026/27 season, but a contract extension is already something to consider. The New York Jets gave WR Garrett Wilson, who was selected one pick before Chris Olave, a 4-year, $130,000,000 contract. Olave’s agent will use this as the basis that the Saints should give his client, but New Orleans will bring up the injury history in negotiations. Realistically, the contract should be a 4-years, $120,000,000, but still, that may be too much.

As I mentioned, Chris Olave has had an extensive injury history, and although he has stayed on the field this season, it’s a real worry for the future. It should also be considered that Olave has struggled with some drops, mental mistakes, and an inability to find a rhythm with QB Spencer Rattler. Olave is only 25 and has major potential, but betting on that is way too risky for the Saints, who are in the middle of a rebuild.

If New Orleans decides to keep Olave and extend his contract, the next option would have to be Rashid Shaheed. The former undrafted WR is out of contract after this season, so getting any draft capital back for a WR already going to leave is a great idea. Yes, the Saints could extend Shaheed, but keeping Olave would make it way too expensive to keep both WRs on this team. With some cap gymnastics, the team can get it done, but they need to compete for the playoffs to do so. Obviously, that’s not where the Saints are. A decision needs to be made between Olave and Shaheed.

Trying to figure out the Saints’ decision-making in this process is not easy, but just looking at this from an outside perspective could make it obvious. Rashid Shaheed is already 27 and has not been a WR1 yet. This makes the potential contract extension much cheaper than extending Chris Olave. Also, trading Olave would get the Saints much better draft capital from a contending team, and the concussion history is a worry. No matter what, this is going to be a risky move, but trading Olave when his value is still high should be the move.

What could the trades look like?

If Chris Olave is traded:

Saints send Chris Olave <—> Giants send 2026 2nd-round pick & 2027 3rd-round pick

If Rashid Shaheed is traded:

Saints send Rashid Shaheed <—> Steelers send a 2026 4th-round pick & 2027 5th-round pick

Pete Werner

2192062605.jpg

Another likely trade that makes sense is the Saints shipping out linebacker Pete Werner. The 26-year-old has had an up-and-down start to his NFL career. Some games look great, and Werner is flying around the field making plays. In other games, Werner struggles to tackle and gets exposed in pass coverage. This has been the issue with the Pete Werner experience. It is way too inconsistent to feel comfortable, and this is not the first time his name is brought up as a potential trade option. The issue in the past was that the Saints had to rely one Demario Davis and Pete Werner as the only two linebacker options because of depth issues, but that’s not the case anymore.

In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Saints selected linebacker Danny Stutsman in the 4th round. Throughout the offseason/preseason, Stutsman made plays and seemed to have developed a bit in pass coverage. These are all the signs a coaching staff wants to see from their young player, and Kellen Moore did something very interesting in the past game against the Patriots. For a bit, Pete Werner was subbed out of the game for Danny Stutsman/Isaiah Stalbird. Many, including myself, thought it was an injury, but Werner was not being checked out by doctors on the sideline, and later in the press conference, Kellen Moore confirmed that this was a move to get Stutsman more playing time. Doing this in a game with the score close is notable, and it can hint that the team could be moving on from Werner soon.

What could the trade look like?

Saints send Pete Werner <—> 49ers send a 2026 5th-round pick

Carl Granderson

gettyimages-2236618746.jpg

Here is the last, and least likely, potential trade the Saints could make: Moving on from Carl Granderson. The pass rush is a major issue for New Orleans, potentially the main reason they are losing these close games. So, why in the world would they trade away their most productive edge rusher? Before Chase Young came back from injury, and clearly looked like the best edge rusher the Saints have, New Orleans ranked last in pass rush pressure. Just looking at the games, Cam Jordan and Carl Granderson were getting stonewalled by opposing tackles. It allowed for QBs to have all the time in the world in the pocket, which then exposed the Saints’ cornerback issues. Granderson is great and getting cleanup sacks when the QB has to leave the pocket due to other pressure, but going one-on-one against tackles has been an issue and way less consistent.

I believe this move is less likely due to the Saints’ overall pass rush issues, which will only worsen with the trade of Granderson. It will also take a great offer from another team to get this deal done because Granderson is under contract until the end of the 2027/28 season. He can still be a good rotational piece while the Saints rebuild this edge rush group, but again, if a team makes a good offer, a deal can get done.

What could the trade look like?

Saints send Carl Granderson <—> Eagles send a 2026 2nd-round pick

The New Orleans Saints are rebuilding their roster, and with the trade deadline approaching, acquiring more draft capital should be the team’s primary focus.

Chris Olave/Rashid Shaheed, Pete Werner, and Carl Granderson are some of the most likely trade options for the Saints, but I wanted to ask: What are your thoughts on some of these trades? Do you think the Saints could get more for some of these players? If you had to choose between Olave and Shaheed for who gets traded away, who would you choose? Are there any other players on the roster you think could be traded away? Let us know in the comments below!

Friday’s Saints vs. Bears injury report

No, your eyes do not deceive you. The New Orleans Saints had perfect attendance in their final practice ahead of their Week 7 matchup with the Chicago Bears. Every player practiced in full, with just cornerback Isaac Yiadom and defensive tackle John Ridgeway III being given game day designations, as both players are marked questionable.

The Bears are a little less unfortunate. They listed five players as questionable for Sunday’s match, including star defensive lineman Grady Jarrett and standout running back D’Andre Swift. Chicago also has some kicking problems, with starter Cairo Santos being out with a right thigh injury.
