Who was the Saints’ breakout player vs. the Bills?

gettyimages-2237919096.jpg

The New Orleans Saints dropped their fourth consecutive game in the 31-19 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in Week 4 of the 2025 NFL season.

The breakout player from the Saints’ loss to the Bills has been speed running his development as a rookie: DB Jonas Sanker.

gettyimages-2237913696.jpg

This year’s third-round pick out of Virginia has continued to exceed expectations while filling in for injured free-agent addition Julian Blackmon in the secondary—and it’s starting to feel like the Saints may have hit the jackpot with the 22-year-old.

On Sunday against the Bills, Sanker recorded three tackles, two pass breakups and the Saints’ first interception of the season, which also marked Josh Allen’s first pick thrown this year. Allen tested him deep on back-to-back plays, but Sanker responded with a PBU and then his wildly impressive INT, showing great range as he covered a ton of ground from the opposite hash. He finished with a team-high 85.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, including an 87.2 in coverage.

His 77.3 overall grade on the season ranks 16th among safeties league-wide, while his 79.1 coverage grade is fifth, according to PFF. Sanker also had the game saving interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the preseason as well, so he’s clearly got above average ball skills for a rookie.

Kellen Moore expressed high praise for his rookie DB:

“Jonas has just done an awesome job… I’m just really happy for this guy. This guy is progressing every week. He played some really hard situations this week. He made the big-time interception. He was matched up against some of the best tight ends in the league in Buffalo and he covered them step for step, made some great plays on the ball and he’s coming around in just a really special way and so I’m fired up to just see him continue to progress.”

Saints guard Cesar Ruiz to miss 4-6 weeks with ankle injury, per report

gettyimages-2231127780.jpg

The New Orleans Saints has suffered another loss on offensive line as news came out that guard Cesar Ruiz will likely be out 4 to 6 weeks with a high-ankle sprain according to a report from Ian Rapoport.

#Saints OL Cesar Ruiz suffered a high-ankle sprain, sources say, which is a 4-6 week injury. That makes him an IR candidate. https://t.co/WPOUTgQ5vz

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 29, 2025

Ruiz suffered the injury to his right ankle towards the end of the first half. While he was initially able to go to the sideline on his own, Ruiz was carted off to the locker room shortly after. He will likely be placed on IR soon, however depending on the severity of his injury, Ruiz could be designated as eligible to return after 4 weeks.

A look back at the history between the Saints and Giants

gettyimages-2188915303.jpg

It’s Week 4 and the New Orleans Saints (0-4) find themselves back home in the dome this weekend to face the New York Giants (1-3) in the Caesars Superdome.

It all started for these two teams back on October 8, 1967, which saw the Giants defeat the Saints 27-21 in the historic Yankee Stadium.

Sunday will be the 33rd time that these two franchises have faced one another in the regular season with New York leading the total series 17-16. However, the Saints have won 7 of their last 10 matchups.

These two teams last played one another December 8, 2024, at MetLife Stadium, which saw the Saints defeat the Giants 14-11.

Kickoff is at 12 pm CT and the game will be broadcast on CBS with Andrew Catalon (play-by-play), Charles Davis and Jason McCourty (color analyst) and AJ Ross (sideline)

NFL Picks Week 5: A Giant Hill To Climb

gettyimages-1862885766.jpg

The New Orleans Saints head back home to face the New York Giants, to continue their winless season so far. After avoiding getting stampeded in Buffalo last week, the Saints proved they could rebound from a terrible performance, even in a loss. Now the Saints go from facing the NFL’s best to facing a team in their own weight class, a team that just earned their first win of the season last week, with rookie QB Jaxson Dart in his first career start. Thankfully, there is now some film on Dart, following his win over the Chargers, a luxury the Saints historically haven’t had against many rookie quarterbacks. Four weeks over, and the Saints have yet to earn their first win and attaining that goal could be a giant hill to climb, but with some returning stars, that hill may not be as giant as it appears.

Let’s take a look at this and every matchup in Week 5.

Last week I went 10-6 (I count the tie as a loss)

I told you so: Steelers over Vikings!

What do I know: Bears over Raiders?

***

WEEK 5

Thursday, October 2nd – Thursday Night Football

49ers(3-1) at Rams(3-1)

Outside of the final play in Philadelphia two weeks ago, the Rams have arguably looked like they could be considered the best team in the NFL. Now they host their arch-rivals in primetime. Like a continuation of last week, San Francisco’s rash of injuries will prove to be more than they can withstand. Los Angeles wins 21-14.

Pick: Rams

***

Sunday, October 5th – Very Early Game

Vikings(2-2) at* Browns(1-3) – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – London, England

The Jekyll & Hyde Vikings will benefit from having stayed in Europe the past few weeks, along with the added benefit of facing this Cleveland offense. Minnesota wins 20-12.

Pick: Vikings

***

Sunday, October 5th – Early Games

Texans(1-3) at Ravens(1-3)

Derrick Henry will put Baltimore on his back in this one, while the Ravens defense finally has their best performance of the season, against a Houston team desperately looking for answers. Baltimore wins 30-7.

Pick: Ravens

***

Dolphins(1-3) at Panthers(1-3)

Fresh off their first win of the season, Miami will double their win total against the pathetic Panthers in Carolina. Miami wins 38-16.

Pick: Dolphins

***

Raiders(1-3) at Colts(3-1)

Indy blew their game in Los Angeles last week due to self-inflicted wounds, but that wont happen again here against Vegas. Indianapolis wins 25-20.

Pick: Colts

***

Cowboys(1-2-1) at Jets(0-4)

Dallas’ offense will simply overwhelm Aaron Glenn’s defense in this one. Dallas wins 26-17.

Pick: Cowboys

***

Broncos(2-2) at Eagles(4-0)

With Philly’s passing offense under internal and external scrutiny, despite their undefeated record, they have a lot to prove. The Eagles will prove a lot to the doubters as well as themselves with a monster performance against Denver. Philadelphia wins 40-17.

Pick: Eagles

***

Giants(1-3) at Saints(0-4)

Since Week 13 of the 2024 season, the Saints have been without their best contingency plan, in quarterback/tight end/football player Taysom Hill. Taysom hasn’t played in an NFL game since his injury and has yet to play in Kellen Moore’s system, but he is the best “break open glass in case of emergency” player the Saints have on their roster, and him being on the field simply gives the defense something to worry about.

Ultimately, the Saints defense will be the unit that carries this game, facing a rookie quarterback in his second career start. A week after playing tough against the reigning NFL MVP at quarterback, the Saints know they can cause problems for Jaxson Dart, and they will, giving their own offense enough space to make the few points they score enough to win the game. Saints win 17-12.

Pick: Saints

***

Sunday, October 5th – Late Games

Titans(0-4) at Cardinals(2-2)

Much like the Jets, Tennessee will remain winless, with another poor offensive outing against the Cards. Arizona wins 25-10.

Pick: Cardinals

***

Buccaneers(3-1) at Seahawks(3-1)

Baker Mayfield and the Bucs rebound from a disappointing loss last week, with a win in an exciting game in Seattle. Tampa Bay wins 28-21.

Pick: Buccaneers

***

Lions(3-1) at Bengals(2-2)

Cincy’s offense is DOA without Joe Burrow under center, and things will get worse against Detroit on a hot streak. Detroit wins 28-7.

Pick: Lions

***

Commanders(2-2) at Chargers(3-1) – Game of the Week

Los Angeles is returning home following a stunning loss to the Giants, while Washington is welcoming Jayden Daniels bask at quarterback. Daniels will be the difference-maker in this high-scoring affair. Washington wins 28-25.

Pick: Commanders

***

Sunday Night Football

Patriots(2-2) at Bills(4-0)

Buffalo seemed to be sleepwalking through the majority of last week’s victory, but they will be awake and alert for this primetime matchup with their AFC East rival. Buffalo wins 40-22.

Pick: Bills

***

Monday, October 6th – Monday Night Football

Chiefs(2-2) at Jaguars(3-1)

Jacksonville took advantage of a team that has been losing its mojo last week in San Francisco, while KC got a good bit of their mojo back last week against Baltimore. Kansas City will be the one to keep it going on Monday Night. Kansas City wins 24-19.

Pick: Chiefs

***

There we go, Week 5 is shaping up to be pretty interesting. Leave us your picks, comments, and insight below!

Interview with the Enemy: New York Giants

gettyimages-2188902087.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will head back home to Cesars Superdome to host the New York Giants in Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season. To break it down, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View joins us to preview Sunday afternoon’s matchup.

gettyimages-2188902087.jpg

NJ: Jaxson Dart was linked to New Orleans throughout the entire draft process—do the vibes around the team suggest they’ve found their franchise QB of the future, and how would you grade his debut performance?

EV: It is far too early to know the answer for sure. Dart, though, has done nothing to make the organization think it was a mistake to trade up into the first round to get him in the draft. He has swag, he has grit, he has toughness, he can lead, he’s smart, he can make plays with his arm and with his feet.

He has a lot to learn and there will be growing pains. But, as I wrote this week Dart has given the Giants and their fans hope. I will say this—I think the Saints made a mistake by not selecting him at No. 9.

I would give Dart’s debut a B+. Not perfect, but he provided energy, didn’t turn the ball over and the Giants beat an undefeated team.

NJ: Following the devastating news that former LSU standout Malik Nabers will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, how confident are you in the depth of the Giants’ receiving corps heading into Week 5?

EV: No matter whether I am confident or not, Nabers is not a player you replace. You put another guy out there and do the best you can. As Dart said Sunday, Nabers is “one of one.”

It is hard to be confident in the depth. Jalin Hyatt has gotten a lot of hype and done nothing in 2+ seasons. Undrafted Beaux Collins is a rookie. There are some people clamoring for the Giants to sign Odell Beckham Jr. I hope those people realize Odell is a shell of the player they remember.

NJ: The Giants inked former Saints 2021 third-round pick Paulson Adebo to a three-year, $54 million deal this offseason—how has he looked since returning from the broken right femur he suffered in Week 7 against the Broncos last season?

EV: Adebo has been good, but not great. The Giants need the guy who had seven interceptions in his last 22 games with the Saints. He hasn’t shown up yet. I think the Giants are still happy to have him.

NJ: Who is one under-the-radar Giants player that has stood out and might be a difference-maker against the Saints?

EV: I will give you a player who has yet to stand out, but who the Giants are very high on and could see a breakout game soon.

That is DE Darius Alexander, a rookie they selected in Round 3. He has been playing more and more, and he has yet to have a big impact. The talent is there, though, and with one of the best defensive line coaches in football in Andre Patterson, I think it will eventually show up.

NJ: According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Saints (-112) are currently 1.5-point favorites over the Giants (-104) in Sunday’s matchup; what is your final score prediction?

EV: Weird. Your questions came in Monday night. I looked Monday morning and the Giants were favored by that same 1.5 points. The Malik Nabers injury has to be the change. Anyway, I can’t give you a score. I think, though, this is a game the Giants should win. It’s a game they have to win with two games against the Eagles and one against the Broncos in the next three weeks. I think it’s a game they will win.

Thank you again to Ed Valentine for joining us to preview this week’s matchup! You can check out the rest of his work here.

The New Orleans Saints ruled out four players ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the New York Giants. Defensive end Chase Young and right guard Cesar Ruiz were ruled out earlier in the week, but the Saints also added wide receiver Trey Palmer and cornerback Isaac Yiadom as players not available for their Week 5 matchup. New Orleans also listed five players as questionable, including tight ends Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill, who returned to practice this week from the physically unable to perform list.

The Giants haven’t ruled out any players for Sunday’s matchup, but did list standout running back Tyrone Tracy as doubtful. Three players are questionable for New York, including superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who is dealing with an illness.

SB Nation Reacts Results: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2237896855.jpg

It’s Week 5 and the New Orleans Saints are back home in the dome to take on the New York Giants, who just got their first win last week. The Saints went toe to toe with an undefeated Bills team, making their victory not as easy as many expected. So, in this week’s reacts poll, we asked readers to vote on how confident they are that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

60% of voters said yes, they still feel confident in this year’s squad and that optimism is understandable. While the Saints may be winless, every week they are improving in some area or another. A lot can be said for a team who is resilient and continues to fight each week even when the score has not yet ended in their favor. The 2025 Saints are still finding their identity and if the pieces come together soon, they could still be in good shape to compete for the division. I think this is the week that they get their first win and at home, which will make it even sweeter.

SB Nation Reacts Survey: How confident are you that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

gettyimages-2239407129.jpg

Week 5 of the 2025 season saw the New Orleans Saints back home in the dome to take on the New York Giants. The Giants came into this game fresh off their first victory of the season, while the Saints were fighting hard to get theirs. While this game wasn’t on the radar of many outside of the team’s own fanbase, it was a great opportunity for the Saints to finally get over that hurdle they have been climbing each week and they did in spectacular fashion, as the defense came away with 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles. Not to be forgotten, the offensive line gave up no sacks this week, allowing Spencer Rattler to go 21/31 including one spectacular touchdown pass to Rashid Shaheed for 87 yards. It was the game the Saints needed to boost their confidence going into the 2nd quarter of their schedule with two very winnable games against the Patriots and Bears up next.

But as always, we want to hear from you. So, after Week 5, how are you feeling about the team? “Are you confident the Saints are headed in the right direction?” Vote in this week’s poll and let us know!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Saints fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

State of the NFC South: Entering Week 6

gettyimages-2239428584.jpg

The Atlanta Falcons are the only NFC South team on bye, but for the rest of the teams, it was a perfect week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After losing to the Eagles last week, the Buccaneers hoped to bounce back with a win. Their opponent, the Seahawks, would not be an easy win, but Tampa Bay still got in done. The game ended in an electric 38-35, and it was a shootout the entire day. QB Baker Mayfield had an excellent day with 379 passing yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Although he was the main reason the Bucs stayed in this game, the defense got the Seahawks to turn the ball over twice, which kept Seattle QB Sam Darnold from winning this game. This was yet another game the Buccaneers barely won, but they got it done

Carolina Panthers

Turnovers are usually the difference in many games, like with the Buccaneers and the Saints, which will get to next. For the Panthers, this was not the case in their win over the Dolphins. QB Bryce Young was intercepted, fumbled the ball, and the Dolphins did not turn the ball over, but somehow, the Panthers won 27-24, so how? Lucky for Carolina, Miami has one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. RB Rico Dowdle finished with over 200 yards and had a touchdown. The funny thing is, the Dolphins running offense may have been just as bad. This was a close game, but somehow Miami ran 14 times, with only 19 yards. Could this be due to the Panthers run defense being decent? Maybe. The issue is the Dolphins barely even tested the Panthers, and Carolina took advantage of this.

New Orleans Saints

It happened. The New Orleans Saints have won their first game of the season and completed the perfect week for the NFC South. I mentioned it before, but turnovers were the major difference in this game. After going up 14-3, the New York Giants turned the ball over 5 straight times (3 fumbles and 2 interceptions). QB Spencer Rattler and head coach Kellen Moore are developing their skills right before our eyes, the young players have stepped up with big plays, the offensive line did not give up a sack against one of the best defensive lines in the league, and rookie safety Jonas Sanker looks to be competing for Defensive Rookie of the Year. This was the first step for the rebuilding Saints, and now, the team is looking to build upon this success.

Current NFC South Standings

  1. Buccaneers (3-1)
  2. Falcons (2-2)
  3. Panthers (2-3)
  4. Saints (1-4)

The New Orleans Saints have given three players game-day designations for Sunday’s matchup with the New England Patriots. Defensive tackle John Ridgeway III and running back Alvin Kamara were ruled questionable. Kamara suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s win over the Giants and has been limited all week. Cornerback Isaac Yiadom was the only player ruled out for New Orleans for Sunday as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Notably, defensive end Chase Young is set to make his season debut after suffering an injury before Week 1.

The Patriots listed seven players with game-day designations, including four players who are out and three who are questionable. Back in August, the tech giant debuted a feature called “Preferred Sources.” It’s a way for Google to prominently feature the results from websites you trust, like Canal Street Chronicles:

“With the launch of Preferred Sources in the U.S. and India, you can select your favorite sources and stay up to date on the latest content from the sites you follow and subscribe to — whether that’s your favorite sports blog or a local news outlet. …
