Saints waive P Matthew Hayball

gettyimages-2170879980.jpg

The New Orleans Saints announced they’ve waived second-year punter Matthew Hayball, re-signing UDFA quarterback Hunter Dekkers in a corresponding move. As a result, they’ll enter the season with a new punter for the fourth year in a row.

usa_today_24668049.jpg

As a 27-year-old rookie, Hayball led the league in punts pinned inside the 20-yard line but ranked 32nd in hang time average. The Australian from Vanderbilt adopted a more traditional punting style this offseason and appeared to make some improvements, with a couple solid practices.

This move now leaves two UDFAs in the punter competition: 24-year-old fellow Australian James Burnip out of Alabama and recently signed 23-year-old Kai Kroeger from South Carolina.

Burnip has impressed with several punts over five seconds. Last week, he had back-to-back punts that hung for 5.15 and 5.22 seconds—a significant difference from Hayball, who averaged 4.19 in 2024.

Who do you think will come out on top in the punting battle?

The Arch Manning sweepstakes may have to wait until 2027

gettyimages-2193331481.jpg

With the New Orleans Saints deep in the middle of a quarterback battle, the conversation about the future starter will still hold firm until someone can prove themselves. The next franchise QB may be on the roster, could be a future free agent, or might be in the draft. Usually, when there is uncertainty over the future at QB, the draft is where many people tend to focus for answers. In the past draft class, this position was underwhelming, but in 2026/2027, the outlook is much better. One of the reasons for this comes down to one player, Texas QB Arch Manning.

Being a part of the Manning family already creates intrigue around the young QB, but he has the skills and tools to back it up. To say Manning is a future number one overall pick is more of an expectation rather than a guess, but the main question is if that will happen in 2026 or 2027. Manning is eligible to enter the NFL Draft after this season, and if he does, teams that have no long-term answer at QB will be in the race for Arch. It is also important to note that there has always been doubt that Manning would enter in 2026 and forgo another year of development in college. This would now push the Texas QB to the 2027 draft class, but nothing has been confirmed that this is going to happen. Still, today, a pretty reliable source spoke on the topic, and it seems the Arch Manning Sweepstakes will take shape in 2027.

“Arch isn’t going to do that. He’ll be at Texas,” – Archie Manning when asked about Arch Manning declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft (Via TexasMonthly)

Anything can happen between now and the deadline for prospects to declare for the 2026 draft, but if Archie Manning’s statement holds and the Saints still need a franchise QB, they may want to wait until 2027.

The New Orleans Saints and Kellen Moore have announced that second-year player Spencer Rattler will get the designation of QB1 ahead of Sunday’s preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, per the team’s social X account.

Moore also made it a point of emphasis that both Jake Haener and second-round draft pick Tyler Shough will get reps within the rotation. While it is unclear how many snaps each will get, fans and staff will get a great opportunity for the quarterbacks to put real game film on tape.

Sunday’s contest is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. CST, live from SoFi Stadium. The game will be broadcast on NFL Network, and those within the local viewing area can catch coverage from WVUE FOX 8.

Key matchups: Saints vs. Chargers

gettyimages-2227680253.jpg

New Orleans Saints football is officially back. The Saints will take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday to open up their preseason. There are plenty of position battles and depth players to hone in on, and in what some consider a meaningless game, lots of implications for the roster going forward.

Saints QBs vs. Opposing Pass Rush

2226800650.jpg

The longest tenured Saints quarterback is Jake Haener, who is entering his third season in the NFL. With such a young quarterback room, the Chargers will likely try to send plenty of pressure towards the young signal-callers and force them to make mistakes.

Second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler has been the most consistent passer during training camp. Rattler has looked poised leading the offense and calm in the face of pressure. However, preseason is significantly different from training camp, where the biggest standout is the possibility of quarterbacks getting hit for the first time by pass rushers.

Most interestingly, going into the team’s first preseason game is how rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will handle pressure. Shough’s biggest knock coming out of college was how antsy he gets in the face of pressure, and that issue has followed him into training camp. The rookie passer’s ability to handle the pass rush on Sunday will be a large factor in his chances to win the starting quarterback job.

Saints DBs vs. Chargers WRs

2192062037.jpg

Outside of quarterback, the biggest question marks for New Orleans entering the 2025 season are their defensive backs. The team traded former All-Pro Marshon Lattimore before the trade deadline during the 2024 season and let promising cornerback Paulson Adebo walk in free agency. The team added veteran safety Justin Reid opposite of Tyrann Mathieu in free agency, but Mathieu would surprisingly announce his retirement the day before training camp.

The Saints have promising stars such as Kool-Aid McKinstry, who is being predicted to have a big season for New Orleans, but it is a completely different unit from just a season ago. The Chargers have plenty of depth in their wide receiver room, including draft picks Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who each contributed during the Hall of Fame game.

Down the cornerback depth chart, the Saints have rookie Quincy Riley and second-year Rico Payton. New Orleans still has a spot open on the starting defense for a cornerback to play opposite McKinstry, while Alontae Taylor takes the slot. Strong performances from these young defensive backs could earn them a spot to play every Sunday.

Saints OL vs Chargers DL

usa_today_19748980.jpg

New Orleans has focused on solidifying their offensive line over the years. The team has spent back-to-back top 15 first-round picks on tackles and has continued to add depth to the unit. The Saints, for the most part, know what they have on the right side of the line with RT Taliese Fuaga, RG Caesar Ruiz, and C Erik McCoy, but the left side has more questions.

The Saints used the ninth overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Kevlin Banks Jr. out of the University of Texas. Banks was assigned to his college position of left tackle, moving Fuaga to right tackle. The 2025 first-round pick is coming into the league as a starter, and the early reps in preseason will be pivotal to him being ready for the season.

Another big storyline for the Saints’ offensive line is Trevor Penning’s move to left guard. While playing tackle, Penning sat out his rookie year and was benched during his second season. While he started all 17 games in 2024 and showed significant improvement, the Saints chose to move the 2022 first-round pick to guard. Reports from training camp indicate that Penning struggled at his new position to start, but has improved as he gets more reps. Sunday’s matchup with the Chargers will serve as the biggest tell of where the tackle-turned-guard stands with his progress.

Why the Saints QB battle just got closer

gettyimages-2228811389.jpg

With the excitement high going into the first preseason game of the season, a loss like the Saints had against the Chargers can be very disappointing. The good news is that it is preseason, and there are many positives to take away, even from a bad loss. In this game, the Saints’ defense looked strong in areas, some unexpected players shined, and the QB play was fine.

Spencer Rattler was the starter in this game and played for most of the first half. Going into this matchup, the hope was that the second-year QB could show signs of development since his rookie season, and potentially make some big plays here and there. Consistency has been the main positive when talking about Rattler’s game throughout training camp, and that is what we saw against the Chargers. He looked confident in the pocket, progressed through his reads, made smart plays, ran for first downs, and made some difficult throws. This was all good, but none of these positives earned points. When Rattler was playing, the Saints won the time of possession and had zero points to show for it. To play devil’s advocate, the pass blocking was horrible when the backups came in. Still, Rattler never stepped up and made that extra play to get the Saints into position to score. In the end, it was a fine day from the young QB, but as the title hints, that was not enough for this game.

When the second quarter was coming to a close, many believed that Spencer Rattler would lead the 2-minute drill to end the quarter, but instead, the Saints put in Tyler Shough to have his first minutes in the NFL. This was a surprise to say the least, but to give head coach Kellen Moore credit, it was actually a great decision to allow the rookie to warm up. In 2-minute drills, the defense will play off the wide receivers to prevent big plays from happening. This allows the QB to find open players and consistently complete short passes. The drive ended in a field goal, which is not a bad way to start your career. Although this was great to warm up Shough for the rest of the game, it may have also done some harm. At the start of the third quarter, Shough threw an ugly pick-six. The throw was clearly the first option and pre-determined, which tends to be what happens in a 2-minute drill. Shough was never going to throw in a different direction on that play. This can be put down as a rookie mistake, but if Shough did not bounce back from this (which has been a focus from the coaching staff all offseason), then this situation would have been much worse. Well, Shough did indeed bounce back and threw a beautiful deep pass to WR Mason Tipton on a 54-yard touchdown. These were the last points that Shough led the team to before getting subbed out.

With both QBs’ days being done at this point, the comparisons started, and Shough may have won the day. He looked more willing to make big plays, was not too distracted from pressure (which was a big worry), and led the Saints twice to scores. Rattler had a fine day, looked consistent, and made improvements from last season, but there was nothing to really separate him from the rookie QB. This is just the first game of the preseason, and much can change, but as of now, the gap between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough has been minimized.

Final stats of Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, per ESPN

Spencer Rattler: 7/11, 53 yards, 1 fumble, 3 sacks, 75.2 passer rating

Tyler Shough: 15/22, 165 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception, 2 sacks, 86.4 passer rating

Who was the Saints’ breakout player vs. the Chargers?

imagn-26822151.jpg

While the New Orleans Saints fell to the Los Angeles Chargers 27-13 on Sunday, there was still plenty of positives to walk away with. Several players stood out, but this guy really caught my attention.

The first breakout player of the 2025 NFL season was flying all over the field and made a strong case for a roster spot by taking full advantage of his opportunity. The breakout player from the Saints’ preseason opener loss to the Chargers is LB Isaiah Stalbird.

imagn-26822151.jpg

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits alum and former defensive back was one of the stars of training camp in 2024 as an UDFA but only saw snaps on special teams as a rookie. After another strong camp, the 25-year-old is looking to secure a larger role in year two, and with the performance he just had, it wouldn’t come as a surprise.

Against the Chargers, Stalbird posted a team-high eight tackles (six solo), two stops, two pressures, and a monster tackle for a loss of six yards, earning a 73.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (76.2 tackling, 73.9 pass rush). Stalbird impressed as a blitzer; his speed flashed off the snap like he was shot out of a cannon, and he always seemed to be nearby when the whistle blew.

Honorable Mentions:

  • LB Jaylan Ford: The second-year linebacker out of Texas tallied eight total tackles (five solo) and five stops, earning an 82.2 run defense grade from PFF. Showing what we’ve seen in camp—just hope he can stay healthy.
  • WR Kevin Austin Jr.: Was Tyler Shough’s go-to target with four receptions for 42 receiving yards, two first-down conversions, and a missed tackle forced with 21 yards after the catch. He’s making a strong case for a roster spot—lethal slant route, first-down machine.
  • DE Fadil Diggs: The seventh-round pick out of Syracuse recorded four total tackles (three solo), two TFL, a stop, and a sack. Super disruptive, constantly in the backfield—a great sign given the team’s recent history with edge rusher draft selections.
  • OG Torricelli Simpkins III: The UDFA out of South Carolina allowed just one pressure on 54 pass-block snaps in his NFL debut, earning a 77.8 PBK grade from PFF. Made the most of his opportunity with so many guys going down with injuries.

Saints sign three players after workouts

gettyimages-2188809059.jpg

The New Orleans Saints have signed three players after holding workouts on Tuesday.

The Saints have signed wide receiver Roderick Daniels, tight end Seth Green, and defensive tackle Jayden Peevy. To make room for the new signees, New Orleans waived wide receiver Chris Tyree and tight end Mason Pline with injury designations and placed Will Clapp on season-ending injured reserve.

Saints signed the following players: WR Roderick Daniels, TE Seth Green, DT Jayden Peevy

— Luke Johnson (@ByLukeJohnson) August 12, 2025

Roderick Daniels was among four wideouts that the Saints tried out on Tuesday. At 5-foot-9, Jones isn’t the mold of a wide receiver that New Orleans was expected to sign. The Saints’ wide receiver room lacks a pass catcher taller than 6-foot-2, and after recent news of Bub Means’ injury, it was expected they would finally target a larger wideout who can be a middle-of-the-field threat.

Daniels was invited to the Saints minicamp earlier in the offseason. The 5-foot-9 wideout specializes as a punt and kick returner and will likely resume that role in New Orleans for the preseason. The Saints also tried out Justyn Ross, JaVonta Payton, and Cornell Powell.

gettyimages-2191698636.jpg

The Saints waived tight end Seth Green ahead of their week 1 preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. New Orleans made the move to make room to sign former San Francisco 49ers tight end Mason Pline. Unfortunately, Pline suffered an injury during Sunday’s game and was waived on Tuesday with an injury designation. With their newfound roster space, the Saints signed Green.

Defensive tackle Jayden Peevy is the most experienced of the Saints’ signings, entering his fourth season in the league. Since being drafted in 2022, Peevy has had brief stints with the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers (twice), Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans.

Saints DB Alontae Taylor sidelined with groin injury

gettyimages-2192062517.jpg

After not being spotted at Tuesday’s practice in Irvine, New Orleans Saints HC Kellen Moore revealed that DB Alontae Taylor will miss some time after suffering a groin injury during Friday’s practice ahead of the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. The initial belief is that the fourth-year corner is week-to-week but has avoided anything major.

imagn-26417735.jpg

Taylor has had an outstanding training camp and has been very vocal, taking his leadership to the next level. I’ve said many times I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s named a captain for the 2025 season and develops into one of the best slot corners in the league.

Moore mentioned that the Saints’ 2022 second-round NFL Draft pick will “provide a lot of flexibility” for the New Orleans defense this upcoming season, which will allow them to play more matchup football. He also added that the 26-year-old is really good against the run and is an excellent blitzer.

Kellen Moore on Alontae Taylor:

“I love watching Alontae. He’s everything you want. He’s got juice every day… I just feel like he’s going to become a really prominent leader for our team.”

Saints passing offense could be in for bounce-back week against the Jags

gettyimages-2228811389.jpg

The New Orleans Saints passing game was a little underwhelming in their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers as Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener combined for 239 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions on 27/41 passing. The Saints QBs are young and inexperienced, so the expectations for them this year are low, but still, in the preseason it would have been nice to see a bit more from the passing offense.

imagn-26821241.jpg

Now returning home for the second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, they have an opportunity to have a bounce back game against one of the leagues worst pass defenses. The Jags just allowed Steelers quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Skyler Thompson to put up 300+ yards and four touchdowns with only nine incompletions. With a pass defense that ranked last in the NFL in 2024 by over 14 yards per game, this performance in the first preseason game did little to quell any nerves that the defense in Jacksonville would be just as bad in 2025. There have even been calls to use rookie Travis Hunter primarily on defense despite the coaching staffs plan to use him primarily at wide receiver simply because the defense has been so bad.

This week provides an opportunity for the Saints young QBs to put up a solid game and hopefully gain some confidence headed into the season. All three quarterbacks should play again on Sunday, and the starting job is still very much up for grabs. Tyler Shough had the best game in Week 1, throwing for 165 yards and one touchdown. The Saints have not yet announced who is starting, but each QB should recognize the favorable matchup they have ahead of them and capitalize on the opportunity to put up a big game.

Juwan Johnson shines against the Rams in joint practice

gettyimages-2226044084.jpg

Yesterday in California, the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams held a joint practice. This was a perfect time for both teams to have a bit of a scrimmage and learn more about certain aspects of their respective rosters. For the Saints, the primary focus was, of course, on Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. The battle ended up being very close, like it has been, but this article is more about one of the weapons that these QBs relied on throughout the joint practice.

The Saints’ TE room has become a source of concern since the first preseason game against the Chargers. Jack Stoll looks to be primarily a blocking TE, and with injuries keeping out Foster Moreau, the depth is a worry for that group. The good news is that if health persists, Juwan Johnson will be the starter, and he will thrive in this offense. Health has been an issue in Johnson’s career, so having some doubts that he can stay on the field is understandable, but when he is on the field, it seems he can be a primary target. This role is emphasized further when you think about the Saints’ lack of big-bodied receivers on the team. Whoever is named the starter will rely heavily on Johnson’s receiving ability throughout the season, and we were able to see a glimpse of that in the joint practice.

In the early part of the practice against the Rams, Juwan Johnson caught 5 passes out of 14 combined throws from the Shough and Rattler. Looking further, Johnson caught around 41% of the completed passes against the Rams’ defense. These catches were also not the easiest, and the TE’s ability to make adjustments to the ball was exciting to see.

Time will tell if Juwan Johnson can finally have that breakout year that the New Orleans Saints are waiting for, but as of now, all signs are pointing to that happening.
