News Sabres Team Notes

First Round Recap: Not Much to See Here

Today started like any other day in the life of a Buffalo Sabres fan. Your eyes opened and the misery of no playoffs for 14 years popped into your head. Then the 55 years of existence without a Stanley Cup thought emerged as well. You sighed, rolled over and realized you need to hit the head. But then you remember, it’s draft day! The chance to add another talent into the fold. The hope of a…

Sabres Trade Lafferty to Blackhawks for Draft Pick

The Buffalo Sabres have traded forward Sam Lafferty to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The team announced the deal just before noon on Tuesday. Lafferty, 30, returns to the Blackhawks, where he previously played between 2022-2023. Originally a draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins, he was sent to Chicago on January 5, 2022 as part of a one…

2025 NHL Free Agency Open Thread Part 2

The Sabres used opening day of free agency to shore up the goaltending and sign bottom 6 and defensive depth. They also added several players headed to Rochester. I’m not sure if much more help can come via free agency for them. The few big fish left will be very expensive and probably don’t view Buffalo as a premier destination. The good news? The Sabres do have the ammunition of defender…

Buffalo Sabres sign Ryan McLeod to four-year deal

One of the better players from the Buffalo Sabres’ latest doomed season, Ryan McLeod was tendered a qualifying offer which he has now signed. The speedy middle-six forward has signed a four-year deal with an AAV of $5 million, a very reasonable deal that secures his immediate future. Coming to the Sabres from Edmonton Oilers in a trade for 2022 first rounder Matt Savoie, the 25-year-old was…

Buffalo Sabres Sign Goaltender Alex Lyon

Update: This signing has now been announced by the team. It’s a two-year deal with a $1.5 million AAV. Per Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres are expected to sign goaltender Alex Lyon when the NHL’s free agency period opens later today. Friedman dropped the news in a 2 a.m. article. Lyon, 32, has spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. This past season, he went 14-9-1…

Per Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Mason Geertsen to a two-year contract, reportedly worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $425,000 at the AHL level. He’s spent most of his…

The Bowen Byram Situation

The situation between the Buffalo Sabres and Bowen Byram continues to get more interesting. On Sunday night, Elliotte Friedman announced that the Sabres have elected to take Byram to arbitration. The player had until 5 p.m. Saturday to elect for arbitration. He didn’t, which opened the option for the team to elect instead. The Sabres had until 5 p.m. Sunday to make that decision…

Buffalo Sabres Open Thread | Week of 7/7

Hope everyone had a good and relaxing Canada Day and 4th of July week & weekend. If you were hoping the Buffalo Sabres were swinging a blockbuster trade over the holiday weekend, then you are to be disappointed. Once the 3v3 scrimmage to close out Development Camp ended, that was about it for any action from the Sabres. With Bowen Byram’s future still unresolved, there is a sense…

Jedi Council

We have seen two years now of Zach Benson and have a pretty good handle on the player he is. Taz is all heart and hustle with good skill to boot. His effort is always strong but the goals and points have not been there yet. Year three should provide more opportunity for offensive success. The Buffalo Sabres just acquired another heart and hustle player in Josh Doan in the Peterka deal with…

Buffalo Sabres Open Thread | Week of 7/14

We are into the quiet days of the summer, as far as hockey is concerned. And concerned is the right term to use here as the Buffalo Sabres continue to be quiet in terms of roster construction for next season. That’s not to say there is not something brewing behind the scenes, but it’s certainly not being spoken out loud if there are more pieces waiting to fall.

Buffalo Signs Bowen Byram to 2-yr Contract

Bowen Byram has signed a new two year, $12.5 million dollar contract with the Buffalo Sabres. The 24 year old defender was a RFA but seemed to have one foot out the door this off season. (much like JJ Peterka) He sought big money and the opportunity to be a true number one defenseman. The two sides avoided a salary arbitration hearing that the Sabres elected. Why did he sign?
