Regular Season Home Stretch For Post-Season Bound Rockets

NBA: Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz

With authority! | Rob Gray-Imagn Images

The 9.8% Solution to the Rockets Record.

We are entering the home stretch of the the 2024-25 NBA regular season. There’s really no way to describe it thus far as other than an unqualified success for the Rockets. They are currently in 2nd place in a brutal Western Conference. If OKC wasn’t putting up a defensive season for the ages (Chop! Chop! went The Butcher. Can’t call em all, says Mr. Bean.) the Rockets would surely be talked about more for their stellar defense.

If anyone had seen this version of the Rockets in the playoffs someone might mention that they have a better record than the New York Knicks, and a lot more runway to get better, than that team.

But that’s fine. If you’ve been a Rockets fan for long, you also know that it can be wearisome to be talked about a lot nationally, but only in a highly negative, and disingenuous, fashion. This Rockets team has room to grow, and isn’t near its peak form. The only player in Peak Season territory is Dillon Brooks, and he’s indeed having a peak shooting and scoring season. The others, the players the Rockets are counting on, are still a couple of years away from that, at least.

Meanwhile, the Rockets are very good indeed. It’s not a mirage. A team doesn’t win this many games in a ridiculously tough conference by being bad. It may be the things its good at aren’t necessarily the keys to playoff success, but that remains to be seen.

The Rockets remaining schedule is surprisingly tough, as all the teams along the way are Western Conference teams, and all but Utah have something besides the NBA Draft Lottery to play for. AK, of the Preview and Playback portion of This Parrish, believes the Rockets will only be favored against the Utah Dried Lakers. Perhaps.

Let’s go through the remaining games, and mark wins and losses for a final record projection or prediction or prognostication. I believe I’m on record somewhere here in the range of 52-54 wins for the Rockets. The team is currently 48-26.

3/3025 - Rockets at Suns. Phoenix is desperate, and playing better with some lineup changes. The Rockets, however, present a difficult matchup for nearly everyone but Kevin Durant. I’m going with a win here.

49-26

3/31/25 - Rockets at Lakers. Will Scottie Foster be the ref? Will Luka and Lebron whine? This is a national TV game. I’m going “L”, unless the Rockets, and specifically Ime Udoka gets away from this playoff rotation lineup and utilizes the Rockets extreme depth of talent to harass the Lakers defensively and offensively at high intensity. Making Luka and Lebron run a lot is to the Rockets advantage. Ime won’t do that. He’s not very creative. His way or no way at all. Loss.

49-27

4/2/25 - Dried Lakers at Rockets. The Jazz try to win at home, and certain generally fairly awful young UDLs play very well against the Rockets. Still Utah dream boy Cooper Flagg is at stake. Win.

50-27

4/4/25 OKC Thudner at Rockets. If OKC has first placed versus the Cavs, yes assuming an NBA Finals appearance, one the NBA League Office utterly dreads, the Rockets win. If not, they don’t. Let’s say it isn’t decided. Loss.

50-28

4/6/25
Rockets at Warriors. The Rockets don’t typically beat Golden State, but Golden State might be their playoff matchup. Still this is Golden State at home, and they’re a lot more famous, and the Rockets just find ways to lose to them. Loss.

50-29

4/9/25
Rockets at Clippers. Will Kawhi be playing, or out again? Who knows? I think even with a good, but diminished Kawhi, the Rockets are just a bad matchup for the Clippers, being largely bigger and more athletic everywhere, with more depth. Win.

51-29

4/11/25
Rockets at Lakers. The Rockets shock the Lakers, as this is only an NBAtv game. Udoka has now processed certain advantages the Rockets have over the Lakers, besides, of course, sheer manliness. That is, the Lakers can only defend well at peak intensity. The Rockets have the depth to overcome that intensity with still more intensity of their own, without getting so damn tired. Win.

52-29

4/13/25 Nuggets at Rockets. Both teams know their playoff fate. Denver and Houston rest literally everyone. The Rockets depth is better than Denver’s depth with everyone resting, and Denver just doesn’t care about this one. It’s not their first rodeo. Rockets hold 2nd place in the West, play Clippers, probably. Win.

53-29 Final Regular Season Record

Of course take these predictions for what they are worth, almost nothing. Please do not place wagers on the basis of this article.

53 wins is a great outcome for the season, one we can be happy to achieve, especially if the team holds on to home court advantage in at least the first round.

What say you?

Houston Rockets vs. Phoenix Suns game preview

NBA: Phoenix Suns at Houston Rockets

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

The Rockets take on the Suns for the third and final time this season

You’re probably getting tired of me saying “This is a big game for the Houston Rockets.”

At this point, they’re all big. Houston is desperately holding onto the second seed in the Western Conference while being chased by the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Memphis Grizzlies. Houston’s schedule down the stretch is brutal, with only one game remaining against a tanking squad. And that tanking squad (Utah) seemingly plays their best basketball against the Rockets and no one else.

Of course, you also know the added importance of this game because of tonight’s opponent. Unless you’re living under a rock, you know that the Rockets will be drafting in Phoenix’s place (as a result of a pick swap following a different pick swap, naturally). So a win for Houston could further push the Suns down the standings and give Houston a better pick in the draft.

Finally, tonight starts Houston’s final back-to-back of the season. They lead the league in them and it will be nice to finally be done with this nonsense. Unfortunately, this combo of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers is pretty sour, so Houston should be happy with 1-1 on this one. Yes, they should go for 2-0, but realistically a 1-1 mark would be fine in the long run.

It’s looking more and more like that final game against Denver is going to matter.

We’ll be in the Playback room tonight, so you should come join to watch the Rockets and talk about the game. Remember, we get a handful of VIP passes that we give out to anyone who wants to watch the game. No League Pass necessary!

Rockets Scorch Suns 148-109

NBA: Houston Rockets at Phoenix Suns

Why Not Save Money And Use Traffic Cones? | Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images

Suns Swept Seasonally

The Rockets concluded a 3-0 season sweep of the Phoenix Suns with a 148-109 victory. Don’t be mislead by the scoreboard, it wasn’t that close.

There’s not an incredible amount of narrative to lay before you for this one. The game started out close, as Devin Booker and Kevin Durant seemingly couldn’t miss, and the Rockets, particularly Jalen Green, missed some looks early.

The apex of the Suns came at 2:44 remaining in the first quarter, when they lead 24-21. Phoenix would not score again until 10:47 remaining in the 2nd quarter, at which point the score would be 37-27. The Rockets would finish the half at 78-49. This was after a somewhat bizarre and perhaps touchy, ejection of Dillion Brooks for two technicals (when he clearly wasn’t escalating any contact, and was in fact moving away from it, but perhaps said some magic words, like “Howdy, Justin!” to referee Justin Van Duyne). The ejection of Brooks seemed to inspire the Rockets to take advantage of what many in the Playback stream called “All Star Game Defense” by the Suns.

The Rockets scoring 46 points in a quarter was certainly fun. The game, with the Rockets up 29 points entering the third quarter was effectively over. For forms sake, I suppose both teams played their starters until around the midway point of the third. Budenholzer waved the white flag, and a Rockets bench parade ensued. It was a lot of fun, except for having to see Grayson Allen’s face. The NBA should insist on a non-translucent, full-face, mask for Grayson Allen. Not to protect him from injury, but to protect children and sensitive adults from having to witness his visage.

In the end, no Rocket who was available to play logged any fewer than 10 minutes of playing time, or scored fewer than 3 points, with most Rockets scoring 6 or more. Tari Eason sat out the first part of the Rockets West Coast back-to-back - good call.

The Rockets pick swap with the Suns in the 2025 NBA draft might have gotten an unfortunate boost, when Kevin Durant inadvertently stepped on Jabari Smith’s foot, and seemed to roll his ankle pretty badly.

Amen Thompson also rolled his ankle in similar fashion, but with seemingly less harmful result, earlier in the game. He was able to return. He’s playing very well, with his passing coming faster, and more incisively it seems, lately. Amen did his usual filling of the boxscore with 12pts (6-10), 10rbs, 9ast in 25 minutes.

Others having good games: The Rockets.

Notably Jalen Green, after a patchy start scored 33 points in 27 minutes, 9-17 (4-5 3pt), 10-12FT, 2rbs, 2ast, 1stl. But really you could pick anyone. Cam Whitmore apparently exists, and he spent his 13 minutes mostly dunking, scoring 13pts on 6-10 with 2rbs, 2ast, 1stl.

Reed Sheppard returned from injury in a perfect setting. He played 12 minutes, scored 6 points on 2-3 3pt, and had 2rbs, 3ast, 1stl.

VanVleet shot well, Sengun was good, as was Dillon (until he was ejected after playing 11 minutes), and Jabari Smith Jr.

From the mid second quarter onward this was a cakewalk. The Rockets now have 49 wins heading into tomorrow night’s national TV (TNT) game with the Lakers. It will mark the Rockets NBA leading 15th, and final, back-to-back of the season.

Let’s hope for more good things, and 50 wins tomorrow night. It’s a West Coast AND TNT game so it’s going to start at 9pm CST. See you night owls and others there.

PS - Phoenix had Western Night tonight, and a charming, old-fashioned looking court with a big cactus. I liked it the most of any special court I’ve seen this season.

Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers game preview

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Houston Rockets

Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

The Rockets head to LA to take on the Lakers

The Houston Rockets are being chased by the Los Angeles Lakers in the standings. The Rockets are currently 3.5 games ahead of LA and won the first matchup. Counting tonight’s game, the Rockets and Lakers have two more meetings with both being in Los Angeles.

The game will be a battle between LA’s ball-handlers and Houston’s athletes. The key will be how Houston deals with LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves. For LA, they will have to find answers for Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson.

The Rockets took care of business last night in Phoenix, so Houston should be able to play without too much sluggishness on the second night of a back-to-back. None of Houston’s starters plkayed more than 28 minutes, and Dillon Brooks only played 11 because he was ejected.

Rockets fall to Lakers 104-98, struggle offensively

usa_today_25818341.0.jpg

Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images

Houston halts their win streak at three games as they conclude West Coast road trip.

This game had some playoff implications, but at the end of the day, Houston wasn’t able to clinch their official playoff spot. While there’s no doubt in my mind that they will, a loss to the Lakers gives a lot less leeway for the Rockets to lose anymore games if they want to maintain the two seeding in the West. But, with that said, let’s get into the game itself.

In the first quarter of this one, there was about little to no offense whatsoever. After a strong start by Sengun, scoring six points within the first three minutes, nothing much happened after for the Rockets. Only scoring 19 points on 32% from the field and 27% from three, Houston evened it out on the defensive end, giving up a mere 16 points to a team that boasts of LeBron James and Luka Doncic. But, the sloppy first quarter turned out to be a slow start for Houston that would return here and there as the game went on.

To say the second quarter of the game was a complete 180 from the first wouldn’t be too far off, because that’s what it honestly was. After shooting a combined 28% in the first quarter, the second was more of the usual that you see in a typical NBA game, as the FG% jumped up to 54.5%. Even without any attempted free throws either, the Rockets scored 48 points in the half, and after a strong second quarter, increased their shooting splits to 47% and 35%. The only issue however was the turnovers by the Rockets, and being unable to stop the Lakers three ball. Giving up six threes in the quarter to the Lakers, three of which coming from Gabe Vincent, Houston allowed 32 second quarter points, bringing it to half tied at 48 a piece. And while I don’t like to bash on refs too much, the fact that there were ZERO free throws rewarded to Houston in the first half just doesn’t sit right by me.

The third quarter was a bit of a different story though, as the refs finally woke up and made calls against the Lakers, giving Houston it’s first free throws of the contest. Shooting a total of eight FTs in the third, the Rockets were able to make seven, each of them important. However, outside of that, there wasn’t a lot of great shooting coming from Houston. Shooting just 40% from the floor and 25% from three as well as three turnovers, the Rockets were outmatched offensively by the Lakers in the third. Allowing seven threes, five being from either DFS or Gabe Vincent, Houston’s defense struggled to prevent the Lakers from scoring in any sense. Even with a bad quarter though, Houston only trailed 77-82 heading into the fourth.

Trailing by five isn’t much, especially in the NBA, but with poor shooting, the lead is a whole lot harder to come back from. Which to not much shock, was exactly the issue Houston faced against the Lakeshow. Going back to the first quarter in terms of how each team performed, the fourth was very much a defensive quarter. Each team shooting under 35% from the field and under 30% from three, offense was about nonexistent here. But, somehow even in a defensive game, the refs found a way to ruin it. Following a Tari Eason dunk in which he yelled at his own bench, Eason was T’d up, changing a two point game immediately to five after FT’s. Getting close multiple times within a one possession game, it would be costly turnovers and missed shots/FTs that would ultimately lose the game for the Rockets. With a 98-104 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Rockets now only sit a game and a half over Denver for the two seed with seven games to go.

Key performers in the game against the Lakers were Amen Thompson who provided 20 points as well as five rebounds and four stocks. Sengun had himself a solid night (14-7-6), but went quiet in the fourth quarter. Jabari played decent also, getting a 15-11 double double coming off the bench as well as shooting the ball efficiently. It’d be poor performances from both Jalen Green and FVV that would hurt Houston the most though as they got little to no guard help in this one.

Next up, the Houston Rockets face the Utah Jazz back at home following the three game road trip in what should be hopefully, a Rockets dub.

Houston Rockets vs. Utah Jazz game preview

NBA: Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz

Rob Gray-Imagn Images

The Rockets look to bounce back against the Jazz

Tonight marks what will likely be the final game of the season in which the Houston Rockets are favored. Unfortunately, it comes against a Utah Jazz team that has played extremely well against Houston in both matchups this season in Salt Lake City.

Houston needs tonight’s win to stay ahead of the oncoming Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers. However, Houston is comfortably in position to have homecourt advantage in their first round series. Tonight, they can clinch a playoff berth, and soon after could wrap up the Southwest Division for the first time since 2020.

The Jazz are tied with the Wizards for the fewest wins in the NBA this season, so they’re certainly in no hurry to win another game. However, they’ve beaten the Rockets and played them close in the second matchup, so there is something about Houston that makes them try and play much better than they do against anyone else. They even found a way to lose to Charlotte on Monday night. That was the last of their winnable games on paper.

We’ll be in the Playback room tonight, so you should come join to watch the Rockets and talk about the game. Remember, we get a handful of VIP passes that we give out to anyone who wants to watch the game. No League Pass necessary!

Rockets officially clinch NBA Playoff spot with 143-105 thumping of Jazz

NBA: Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

The Rockets are heading back to the postseason!

The Houston Rockets won their 50th game of the season and clinched an NBA Playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 143-105 dismantling of the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. This will be Houston’s first playoff appearance since 2020.

The Rockets win their 50th game of the season and clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2020! Houston also wins the Southwest Division.

Super impressive for a team that was predicted to win 41.5 games by most sportsbooks/experts.

— The Dream Shake (@DreamShakeSBN) April 3, 2025

Alperen Sengun had a near triple double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists on 6-for-12 shooting to lead the way for Houston. Jalen Green had 22 points on 7-for-15 from the field including 4-for-7 from deep, and Dillon Brooks had 21 points on 9-for-16 from the field to pitch in for the Rockets.

The game started off close, but the Rockets stepped on the gas in the second quarter and pulled away, and this one was basically over by the third. Houston cleared its bench by the end of the game, and youngsters Reed Sheppard and Cam Whitmore even got in on the scoring action. Sheppard had 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in just 9 minutes of playing time. He shot 5-for-7 from deep. While Whitmore had 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists on 4-for-6 from the field in 12 minutes of playing time.

Other Rockets contributors were Jabari Smith Jr., who had 15 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, and Tari Eason, who had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams did not play in this one.

The Jazz were led by Isaiah Collier, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds, but Houston held Utah to just 42.6 percent shooting as a team, and they were just 10-for-40 from three.

Houston moves to 50-27 on the season and hold a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Lakers for second place in the Western Conference. The Rockets return to action on Friday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder. But Houston holds the toughest remaining schedule in the NBA.

The Rockets now have the hardest remaining schedule in the NBA. All five of their remaining opponents are `in the top 6 in the West and playing for something. They have a combined winning percentage of .645.

This is kind of a big deal, y’all.

The Houston Rockets crushed the Utah Jazz 143-105 on Wednesday night to win their 50th game of the season and secure a Western Conference NBA Playoff berth. Houston will be making their first postseason appearance since 2020.

Houston has five games remaining, and even though they are against five playoff-caliber opponents (Thunder, Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, and Nuggets), Houston has exceeded many fans' expectations by winning 50 games.

Rockets fans were clowned all over social media for being overly optimistic, as some fans honestly believed Houston could win 50-plus games. Additionally, most sportsbooks predicted Houston to win only 41.5 games.

— The Dream Shake (@DreamShakeSBN) April 3, 2025

Looking back on recent prior postseasons, Houston was defeated by the Golden State Warriors in the 2017-2018 season in a seven-game series in the Conference Finals after defeating both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz in five games. During the 2018-2019 Season, Houston’s postseason run was once again ended by the Warriors in a six-game series loss in the second round after beating the Utah Jazz in six games the previous round. Finally, in the 2019-2020 bubble season, Houston was defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round in a five-game series after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder first in seven games.

Houston’s return to the title chase is a momentous occasion, but they still have work to do. The NBA Playoffs are a different animal, and outside of players like Fred Vanvleet, Dillon Brooks, and Jeff Green, the Rockets are lacking playoff experience. What interests me the most is how will Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green’s games transfer to the playoffs.

I am inclined to believe that Sengun will have an easier time, as during the postseason, the game typically slows down, which will benefit Sengun. Additionally, the games in the playoffs focus more on defense, which should benefit Houston as a whole.

As for Jalen Green, I expect him to struggle more adjusting to the postseason. However, one factor that may benefit him is the increased physicality of the postseason, as referees are less likely to call fouls. This could work in Jalen’s favor because he does not get a fair whistle to begin with.

All in all, it is a great feeling for Houston to be back in the playoffs, and I hope to attend some playoff games this season. Let’s get Toyota Center popping!

Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder game preview

NBA: Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder

Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

The Rockets try to take down the best team in ball

The Oklahoma City Thunder might win 70 games.

Their remaining schedule sets up fairly nicely, with three games against teams below .500 (Phoenix, New Orleans, and Utah) and two of their three “tough” games coming at home. Those two home games are both against the Los Angeles Lakers, which means that Houston Rockets fans will undoubtedly be pulling incredibly hard for the Thunder to sweep both games. In Houston’s favor is that the Thunder have not clinched the number one overall seed in the NBA. Their magic number for that is currently 68 wins, which means they will need to play hard for a little while longer. The Thunder may want to go for 70, or they could decide that the most important thing is winning a title.

That brings us to tonight’s matchup. The Rockets became the second team to clinch a playoff spot in the West and are now hoping to wrap up the 2 seed. Houston is almost guaranteed to have home court advantage in the first round, but the Rockets can now get greedy.

Unfortunately, Houston closes with the most difficult schedule in the NBA. Every team they are playing is playing for something, and they’ll face off against the current 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 seeds in the West. Three of those games are on the road, and the two home games come against the 1 and the 4. So it’s entirely possible that we could be talking about how the Rockets entered the playoffs on a 5-game losing streak.

Last time these teams met, Ime Udoka conceded the game and played the Rio Grande Valley Vipers out onto the court. The Vipers, led by Cam Whitmore and Reed Sheppard, kept the game close and respectful throughout. In the end, the Thunder had too much talent and pulled away for the win. Still, it was nice to see good play from guys who hadn’t played much before that night (or in N’Faly Dante’s case, zero NBA basketball at all).

We’ll be in the Playback room tonight, so you should come join to watch the Rockets and talk about the game. Remember, we get a handful of VIP passes that we give out to anyone who wants to watch the game. No League Pass necessary!

Rockets go wire-to-wire on the OKC Thunder in a 125-111 victory

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at Houston Rockets

No Dillon... No problem.

The Houston Rockets are guaranteed at minimum a 6th seed in the playoffs, but Ime Udoka immediately shut down any notion of being satisfied. The Rockets want to stay in the two seed. Tonight was the first of five games against playoff teams and it was against the best in the West, the OKC Thunder. The Rockets came out ready.

Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green set the tone offensively, Amen Thompson and Steven Adams set the tone defensively, and the bench wasted no time getting involved in a first quarter that saw the Rockets shoot 54 percent from the floor, force five first quarter turnovers, and get to the line nine times, making eight of them. Jalen Green scored 14 in the quarter and Sengun scored 11 and the Rockets lead after one quarter 35-28.

The Rockets owned the second quarter, starting with a 17-9 run, holding the Thunder to 3-of-11 shooting in that span, and going 3-of-4 form three during the run. The Rockets also began to separate themselves by dominating the boards with more than double the offensive rebounds as the thunder midway through the second quarter.

At one point the Rockets scored 14 straight points and lead by as many as 21 points. Ultimately the Rockets held the Thunder to 44.4 percent shooting in the first half, shot 51 percent from the floor themselves including 43.8 percent from three, went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and out rebounded OKC 27-17 to take a 69-53 lead into the half. Alperen Sengun led the way with 19 points at the half on 7-of-11 shooting. Jabari Smith Jr. had 7 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Thunder were able to cut into the lead slowly in the third quarter, until the Rockets inserted their “small ball” lineup playing Jabari Smith Jr. at center. Jae’Sean Tate had a great quarter hitting two threes and bringing the defensive intensity we have been accustomed to during his tenure with the Rockets. The Rockets lead was trimmed to 12, then eventually they got it back to 20, before the Thunder went on a run at the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to 96-85 headed into the final quarter.

The Rockets would have to keep up their intensity if they were going to end the 11-game win-streak and they did just that. The Rockets outscored the Thunder 29-26 in the fourth quarter. Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun played the role of closers and they both ended the game scoring 30+ points.

The Rockets outshot the Thunder, out-rebounded the Thunder, dominated in fast-break points and ultimately went wire-to-wire in a 125-111 victory. Alpi scored 31 points, Jalen Green scored 34 points, both on an efficient 52 and 45 percent shooting. Jabari Smith Jr. grabbed 17 rebounds and Steven Adams grabbed 12 boards. It was an overall team win to notch their 51st on the season.

The Rockets will face another tough test on Sunday when they head to San Francisco to take on the Golden State Warriors at 7:30 PM CST. Watch the game on Space City Home Network, NBA TV, or listen on Sports Talk 790 AM.

Houston Rockets vs. Golden State Warriors game preview

usa_today_25413269.0.jpg

Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

The Rockets wrap up their season series against the red-hot Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are on a roll.

The Dubs have won five straight games, including the last three games coming against teams ahead of them (at the time) in the standings. That streak continues tonight when they take on another team ahead of them, the 2 seed Houston Rockets.

The Warriors have already wrapped up the season series tiebreaker against Houston. They would need to win out and would need to see the Rockets lose out to catch them in the standings. Based on Golden State’s play and Houston’s upcoming schedule, that doesn’t look impossible.

Still, the Rockets won a big game against the Thunder that many thought they would lose, and are riding some good play of their own. Houston is on the nightmare California road trip, which has haunted them the last couple of seasons. Add that to the nightmare that the Warriors have been to the franchise in general, and the Warriors -4.5 line looks pretty tasty.

The key for Houston will be the play of Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun. Both are coming off great nights against OKC, but both play poorly against the Warriors. For Green, his true shooting percentage against the Dubs in his career would have him at the very bottom of the league by a wide margin. Sengun isn’t able to get into his moves against the Warriors thanks to Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, and Golden State’s swarming defense.

The Warriors make teams pay for turning the ball over. Live ball turnovers usually lead to Steph Curry 3s and Jimmy Butler layups. The Rockets have to take care of the ball and not lose Curry or Golden State’s bevy of cutters and shooters.

We’ll be in the Playback room tonight, so you should come join to watch the Rockets and talk about the game. Remember, we get a handful of VIP passes that we give out to anyone who wants to watch the game. No League Pass necessary!

Rockets make a statement in 106-96 win over the Warriors

NBA: Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors

Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images

Young Rockets keep their composure on the road against the veteran Warriors.

The quest for the Houston Rockets to solidify themselves in the two seed in the West, headed out West to Alcatraz as they took on the Golden State Warriors. The history between these two teams is well documented, but the Rockets could take this opportunity to finally have an upper hand on the Warriors for the first time since before the Warrior dynasty began. The Rockets seemed ready to do just that when they started the game with a 6-0 run. When the Warriors answered with an 8-0 run of their own, it was game on.

The Warriors were hot from three early hitting 6-of-10 with two minutes still remaining in the first quarter. The Rockets did not hit a three in the first quarter as the lead for the Warriors ballooned up to 11 quickly. The Rockets were able to force six Warriors turnovers and out score them in the paint to keep it close. The Rockets would go into the second quarter trailing by six points, 24-18.

The Rockets started the quarter with the “double-big” lineup with Curry off the floor and it got them back in the game. It was a slugfest as neither team shot the ball particularly well. Jabari Smith and Aaron Holiday came off the bench and hit three three-point shots and the lead would begin to change hands back and forth midway through the second quarter and it got feisty! The playoff intensity picked up.

Draymond Green tried his best to get in the young Rockets heads, but the Rockets were up for the challenge. After being fouled by Draymond on an inbounding play, and Draymond drawing a technical in the process, Alperen Sengun went right back at the Warriors with a strong drive to the basket and an “and-one” that fired up the whole team. It was a signal to the Warriors. The Rockets were not intimidated.

The Rockets hit the boards and forced turnovers and got out in transition to get themselves a one-point lead headed into the half. The half ended with Curry hitting a patented deep contested three, followed by Fred VanVleet drawing a foul on Draymond Green at half-court with 0.6 remaining on the clock. Unfortunately, Fred missed both free-throws in lock step with the rest of the team who went 2-of-9 from the charity stripe. Dillon Brooks led the way scoring with 12 points. Sengun had 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Jabari Smith Jr. chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The intensity did not lessen in the third quarter. The Rockets defense was swarming and running the Warriors off the three-point line, particularly Stephen Curry who was 1-for-8 through three quarters. Draymond Green sat nearly the entire quarter after getting a flagrant-foul-1 by elbowing Alperen Sengun in the mouth on the way to the basket. Sengun continued to not back down, and Amen Thompson played terrific defense and began to find some scoring opportunities as well. The Rockets would build the lead to double digits despite still not making free throws because they shot 13-of-24 in the quarter including 2-of-4 from three. The Warriors shot 9-of-22 in the quarter, but 4-of-12 from three, so the lead after three quarters was just 83-76 Rockets.

As expected, the beginning of the fourth quarter was tight, but the young Rockets continued to showcase their growth and poise. Amen Thompson put absolute clamps on Steph Curry who made one shot on 10 attempts, Jabari Smith Jr. came up huge off the bench with 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Jalen Green saved his best for the fourth quarter scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the final quarter. The Rockets held the Warriors to 41.6 percent shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers.

For all the noise he made, Draymond Green was fairly quiet as he messed around and got a triple single on 1-of-5 shooting with 5 fouls in 27 minutes. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think Draymond wanted to get kicked out of the game, but the officials did not oblige him. He had to stay and take the Rockets belt-to-ass with the rest of his teammates. Steve Kerr waived the white flag with just under two minutes to go in the game with the Rockets ahead by 13. The Rockets win 106-96 against the Warriors, on the road, for the first time since 2016.

The Rockets have now positioned themselves where the only team that can surpass them in the standings are the Los Angeles Lakers, who they will face on Friday in La La Land. The Rockets will remain in the second seed as long as they do not lose out the rest of the way and the Lakers don’t win the rest of the way. This win puts the league on notice. The Rockets are for real, and they will not be intimidated by anyone. The hometown heroes will be back in action Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers. Catch the game on Space City Home Network, or listen on Sports Talk 790 AM.

Rockets win over Thunder shows Houston is ready for the NBA Playoffs

Utah Jazz v Houston Rockets

The Rockets are showing they’re not to be taken lightly.

After an impressive victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night the Houston Rockets have proven that they are playoff-ready.

For Oklahoma City (64-13), who had won 11 straight games before Friday’s 125-111 loss to the Rockets and appeared to be in control of their fate after just losing twice since the All-Star break, it was an odd sight. However, Houston, which secured a playoff spot earlier this week, appears to have turned a corner ahead of its first postseason appearance in four years and is keen to make a statement to the NBA’s other teams.

The Rockets won by a wide margin of victory after the Thunder held the lead for just 44 seconds. Alperen Şengün contributed 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting, while Jalen Green led all scorers with 34 points on 11-of-24 shooting. The NBA’s top scorer, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, finished the game with 22 points on 22 shots. Houston gained home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs and solidified its hold on the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with the victory.

Rockets coach Ime Udoka remarked:

“We’ve been harping on that since (the last) 20 games. Just to get better in many ways toward the end of the season. Staying healthy and playing your best going into the playoffs are two goals, and both have been met. Possessing the depth we do while also anticipating what is ahead is a luxury.

“We want to play good basketball, tighten up, and start feeling like we’re in the playoffs because we have four good opponents coming up.”

Without a doubt, the Rockets are viewing the final five games of the regular season as a litmus test. Tankathon claims that the Rockets have the NBA’s most difficult remaining schedule. Furthermore, these games matter more than merely seeding, since every club Houston will play from now until the end of the season is a Western Conference playoff team.

According to Udoka:

“You might keep (the schematics) vanilla depending on the importance of the game. However, you begin to deploy those tactics if it’s a must-win situation and you need to do things like tonight to remove them from some of their recent successes against us. We were able to go over their game plan and go over a lot of things because we had two practices.

“We hit them with more. That is how it will appear in the playoffs. very particular about individuals and plays, which is what we accomplished tonight.”

It was crucial to counteract Houston’s usual physical edge in their fifth and final match with Oklahoma City. Dillon Brooks received a suspension after receiving his 16th technical foul of the season. However, Udoka chose to start reserve center Steven Adams rather than Tari Eason or Jabari Smith Jr.

Particularly from the first tip, the Rockets’ choice to select Adams above other possibilities appeared to be a hiccup in the Thunder’s game plan. Coach Mark Daigneault called a timeout less than two minutes into the game because his players were unsure of what was going on on the court.

Adams’ presence in the starting lineup — and a large reason why the dual-big combination has worked thus far — is because of his physicality, which reveals itself at both ends of the floor. Adams’ skill around the boards is well known offensively; in the game against Oklahoma City, he pulled down 12 rebounds, six of which were offensive. Even at age 31 and with a long history of injuries, Adams’ defensive speed is underestimated.

The Rockets’ portrayal as a dark horse before the postseason was brought home to us on Friday night. They have the agility to punish teams in the open floor (they dominated the transition battle 19 to 8), and they can swarm defensively, throwing Gilgeous-Alexander a barrage of looks in what could be a preview of what we might see from the Rockets in the NBA Playoffs.

Talk Houston Cougars vs Florida Gators NCAA Tournament Final Here

Houston Cougars vs. Florida Gators

Monday, April 7, 2025 @ 7:50pm CST

Location: Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas

TV: CBS

First off, the Cougars beat a Duke team with the very likely 1-1 NBA Draft pick, and two other lottery players. It was a stirring comeback, and shocked pretty much everyone but the Cougars. There are stories all over, that are mostly asking harsh question of Duke (which is fair) but the other side of the coin is, the Houston Cougars went and took a game from a loaded Duke team.

The Cougars have had one of the most difficult roads to the Finals of any NCAA team, and yet, here they are. They can beat a very good Florida team, too.

From a personal standpoint, I’d love it if the Cougars finally, finally, won it all. Both my parents went to the U of H. They met there. My first ever memory of Houston sports heartbreak, of many, many, to come, was the coolest NCAA team ever, the UH Phi Slamma Jamma, losing in the last second of the Final to NC State. Even today, it still hurts, because they will not stop playing that clip.

Philosophically, that loss cemented in my mind a deep hatred and disgust for “turtling”. That is, a team with a big lead retreating into its shell, that stops doing the things that brought it such a big lead. Sure, there are times to run clock, but by and large, play the way that brought you to where you are now.

One could argue that Duke, with a big lead late, also decided to turtle, while the Cougars kept playing the way they always do, with their hair on fire. Look what it cost Duke, the overwhelming favorite in that game.

I’m not entirely sure I can actually watch this one. I couldn’t watch the Astros win their first world series. I just dropped in and out of the UH v Duke game on Saturday. I hope you don’t judge me harshly for that, but that’s where a lifetime of being a Houston sports fan has left me.

So talk the game here, and I may stream it on playback.tv/dreamshake, though its on CBS, so it should be available everywhere.

Since this game is in San Antonio, we can wish for a sea of Houston Cougar red in the stands tonight.
