Rockets look to bounce back versus Minnesota

imagn-28015492.jpg

After a disapointing loss following a bad fourth quarter, the Houston Rockets look to get back on track with a win versus the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

With a solid defensive effort and team intensity, Minnesota is on the rise. Anthony Edwards leads the Wolves’ excellent scoring balance, and Julius Randle and Naz Reid provide strong interior play.Additionally, they recently defeated the Bucks handily, which gives them confidence. Meanwhile, Houston’s recent performance has been inconsistent, including a 20-point loss to the Thunder in which offensive difficulties were a significant problem. The Rockets average about 119 points per game and have impressive rebounding stats, but they have cooled off in recent games. Kevin Durant leads the Rockets in scoring ar 25-26 points per game, and has been receiving contributions from Alperen Şengün and other pieces (Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. etc).

The big story tonight is Anthony Edward’s injury. It was confirmed yesterday that the star guard would miss a second straight game with a foot injury. This should drastically alter the game plaan for Houdton as they can now focus more of their deffensive efforts on pl;ayers like Julius Radle and Rudy Gobert/

Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun lead Rockets to 110-105 win over Timberwolves

imagn-28026054.jpg

The Rockets got back on the winning track on Friday night with a 110-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were playing without Anthony Edwards. Kevin Durant had a season-high 39 points to lead the way for the Rockets. Durant was 11-for-18 from the field, 6-for-8 from deep, and evem showed off some of his playmaking chops with 7 assists to go along with 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. He did have 5 turnovers, however.

Houston also got a double-double from Alperen Sengun. He finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block, while shooting 11-for-22 from the field. He also seems to finally be feeling better, as he was back to doing Alpie-like things.

— ESPN (@espn) January 17, 2026

The only other two Rockets in double figures were Amen Thompson, who finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists on 5-for-12 from the floor, while Reed Sheppard woke back up a bit, also finishing with 14 points. He was 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from three, though he’s still struggling getting minutes out of Ime Udoka, finishing with just 19 minutes of court time. As a comparison, Josh Okogie had 1 point on0-for-4 shooting, and he still played 33 minutes. Jabari Smith Jr. continued struggle, hitting just 3-for-12 from the field, he still played 38 minutes. Reed just can’t get any love, even when he’s playing relatively well.

Outside of Reed, Houston got just 8 more total points from its bench, with Dorian Finney-Smith throwing up another stinker with 0 points in 16 minutes.

The Rockets sat Steven Adams and only played Clint Capela 12 total minutes, so the Rockets actually lost the rebound battle in this one, but they shot 46 percent and were 12-for-28 from deep, so perhaps the offense is waking up a little bit.

The Wolves were led by Julius Randle with 39 points, and Naz Reid had 25 off of the bench, while Rudy Gobert had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double along with 2 blocks, despite being put in a blender by Sengun.

The Rockets now move to 24-15 on the season and are in the five seed, three games back of the second seed. They’ll be back in action on Sunday versus the New Orleans Pelicans.

Time for the Rockets to go all in on JD Davison

gettyimages-2256192500.jpg

JD Davison has been an intriguing name dating back to October, when the Houston Rockets’ preseason kicked off.

Well, he’s been an intriguing name dating back to 2021, when he was a five-star point guard in high school. In fact, Davison was the top point guard in his prep class.

After a highly successful foray in the G-League, which saw him nab top honors as MVP of the league, he found his way on the Rockets in the summer.

On a two-way deal, which seemingly always get overlooked. He dazzled in the preseason.

I questioned whether he could (or should) garner a considerable role before the season even started.

Davison’s ability to shoot from deep was impossible to overlook.

As was his ability to possibly take meaningful point guard reps.

Which was all the more important, as starting point guard Fred VanVleet had just suffered a season-altering ACL injury (if not season ending).

Davison has been kept on the shelf by Rockets coach Ime Udoka essentially the entire season.

Which has been a rather interesting decision, as the Rockets have found themselves in dire need of a table-setting point guard to run the offense and help the team get into their actions and sets.

The Rockets have forcefully played Amen Thompson out of position at point guard for most of the way and have tasked facilitating and playmaking responsibilities to Kevin Durant when moving Thompson back to his natural off-ball, wing position.

On Tuesday, they gave Davison some burn.

And he showed Udoka why he should play more.

Davison played very well on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he simply makes the right plays.

And Davison is easily the best (and only) true pick-and-roll guard on the roster.

And he’s able to attack the basket, despite being fairly diminutive in nature (at least for anyone NBA-level point guard).

He has a natural feel for the game and plays under control.

He’s able to bring the ball up the court and initiate offense, which has been lacking for the Rockets. He plays up tempo and pushes the pace.

And he communicates, on both offense and defense.

Which has also been lacking (and what especially stands out about VanVleet’s absence).

In 24 minutes of action, he was a +14, posting a statline of nine points, seven rebounds, four assists (and zero turnovers) and one block.

Davison went 3-of-6 from the field and 1-of-2 from deep.

To the tune of 62 true shooting (well, 61.5 percent, to be exact).

And he found himself in Houston’s closing lineup, in a tight game that came down to the wire.

The Rockets will have to make a long-term decision rather quickly on Davison, as he’s played 35 games (including Tuesday night’s victory over the Chicago Bulls).

Two-way players are only able to be active for 50 games.

At that point, Davison would have to be signed to a standard deal in order to keep suiting up for the Rockets. Such a deal would cost the Rockets a hair over $900,000 (prorated, based on his minimum scale of $2.46 million, calculated at $30,000 per game).

Which would be well worth it. No need to speculate (unreasonably) about which player around the league will make their way onto the roster.

Let’s run it with JD Davison. He’s the only realistic option, at this point.

Rockets look to keep up the momentum versus New Orleans

imagn-28026044.jpg

After a ‌tight ‌victory against Minnesota, Houston aims to snag another one against New Orleans. This year, the Rockets sit at 0-1 against the Pelicans, following a 133-128 defeat in overtime. From there, New Orleans picked up just four wins.

So far, the Rockets have shown flashes of real power mixed with some shaky stretches, pulling off wins in high-speed matchups, yet dropping others they should have claimed. In the latest outing, Kevin Durant dropped 39 points to beat the Timberwolves, highlighting his knack for those huge scoring bursts. When Houston locks in, their fast breaks and board work stand out; they often cash in on extra shots and own the glass.

New Orleans, though, packs a serious scoring punch when everybody’s fit, even amid all their troubles this campaign. Still, injuries and uneven play kept them from accumulating wins, and lately, betting lines favored the Pacers over them, pointing to deeper issues across the board.

Houston has to cut down on turnovers and draw solid efforts not only from Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun, but also from guys like Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard, and Jabari Smith Jr too.

Jabari Smith Jr. breaks out of slump, leads Rockets to 119-110 victory over Pelicans

imagn-28037562.jpg

Jabari Smith Jr. had been slumping, no doubt. Badly enough that his poor peformances had been directly related to at least a few losses, and some fans had been growing impatient with the 22-year-old’s development. He answered some of those critics in the win over New Orleans.

Smith went off for 32 points, a career-high 7 three-pointers, 8 rebounds and a block to lead the Houston Rockets to a 119-110 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

In addition, the Rockets also got 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and a block from Alperen Sengun, and 20 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal and a block from Amen Thompson to help out Smith. Thompson, in particular, was 10-for-14 shooting from the field.

KD actually had some real help in this one, and it was needed, as the Houston’s leading scorer only put in 18 points on 5-for-18 from the field. He did also add 6 rebounds and 8 assists, as well as passed his idol Dirk Nowitzki for sixth in the all-time scoring leaderboards. KD was just a +3 in this one, the lowest mark of any of the Rockets starters.

The Rockets didn’t come out of this one unscathed, however, as center Steven Adams, who started in this game and finished with 5 points and 10 boards, took a nasty fall that could have resulted in major injury. Thankfully, Ime Udoka said after the game that it was a sprained ankle. However, Adams is dealing with some bad swelling and is going to miss some time.

— ClutchFans (@clutchfans) January 19, 2026

As for the Pels, they were led by Trey Murphy with 21 points, and Zion Williamson put in 20 to help lead their team in scoring. The Pels shot 50 percent from the field, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Smith’s hot shooting from deep.

The Rockets have now won two in a row and move to 25-15 on the season. They currently stand in the fifth seed, just three games back of the second seed, but also just a game ahead of the Play-In group. They return to action on Tuesday, versus the San Antonio Spurs.

Spurs Jingle, Jangle, And Perhaps Jingle Again, Into Houston

imagn-28037542.jpg

TheRockets won their matchup against the Pelicans on Sunday pretty easily, with the return of Dr. Jaswishy, and Kevin Durant eclipsing Dirk Nowitzki’s career scoring mark. Dirk had recorded a nice congratulatory video for Kevin Durant, which was played in Toyota center upon points 31,362 being scored. That is, truly, a lot of basketball points.

Tonight’s matchup is with the Spurs, and will mark the 5th and final game of Houston’s much needed home stand. But don’t worry, they’ll be off to Philadelphia and Detroit later this week, lest their home/road games played split become too normal. The Rockets can finish this stretch 4-1 with a win, but in the Spirit of AK I can only suggest that a dismal, dispiriting loss will occur. It’s better not to hope, as the Texans demonstrate in Divisional Round year after year.

Anyhow this should be a good one, as it will be on NBA/Peacock, after their big day of mostly not great MLK day games (Detroit v Boston was very good).

Looking ahead because we don’t have to take it day by day – the Pretty Decent 76ers on Thursday.

Rockets blast past Spurs 111-106

imagn-28049812.jpg

This might be the best Rockets win of the season. It’s certainly my favorite win.

There’s been a lot of negativity around here (looks at self) regarding aspects of this year’s Rockets team, a good bit of it deserved. This is all positivity, though. That’s because this victory carried two great signs that we can all hope continue. The first is a return of the determination, fight, and intensity of last year’s Rockets team. A team that sometimes simply enforced their collective will on opponents, despite not necessarily playing better than that opponent. The second is a victory of awareness, of recognition of problems and some positive responses to those problems. Long may it continue.

If you watched the first half of this game, you may be forgiven for finding something better to do with your life in the second half. This game was mostly a reward for Rockets degenerates, and a just punishment for those Spurs fans who think their team plays ethical basketball.

The first quarter was all Spurs, almost to the point of absurdity. It wasn’t that the Rockets came out flat, or didn’t score the ball. After a good 15-20 minutes levelling a rim with a big ladder and a fine German level, to repair Stephon Castle’s vandalism, the Rockets started with plenty of fire. It was more a case of absurdly hot Spurs being even more fiery from three, and Udokan Math not mathing. That is, trading threes for twos, constantly. The Spurs attempted 27 shots for the quarter. 13 of those shots were three pointers, of which they made 8. They went 4-14 around the basket, and in the paint, and 1-1 on a longer two point attempt. The Rockets? They had 21 FGA, and made 11-16 twos, and 2-5 threes. The Rockets also missed several free throws, while San Antonio didn’t.

There can be fewer clearer demonstrations of “three is more than two” and “quantity has a quality all its own” than this first quarter. Certainly there were Rocket defensive mistakes, mainly Alperen Sengun helping away from Julian Champanie, a 36% three point shooter on the season, who went 4 for 5 from three in the first. (He’s shooting a robust 16-29 from three against the Rockets overall this season, so maybe don’t leave him?). In any case, the quarter ended 39-28 Spurs.

The second seemed much like the first, only the Spurs cooled off, from 70% to 45% on threes, and the Rockets made a few more shots. The Rockets defense was much better, and they started fixing defensive mistakes. Still a quarter ending 32-31 in favor of the Rockets wasn’t going to do much to close the gap established in the first quarter. But the quarter began all Spurs, like the first, and slowly the impetus changed to the Rockets. Hard to spot, but the Rockets were now showing a more energy and determination, perhaps.

The Rockets would definitely display their 2024-25 season fire in the third quarter, where it seemed the Rockets were defending very well, and if the Rockets were going to go down, they’d drag the Spurs to hell with them. The quarter ended in a tie, with only 22 points scored by either side.

This defensive display by the Rockets was matched by an offense that couldn’t gain any ground in the third. This, perhaps, is at the heart of some of the criticism of Ime Udoka and his black clad cult member coaching staff. It’s very hard to solely defend your way to victory in the NBA. Holding the Spurs to 22 points is a great accomplishment. Scoring 22? Not so much. The Spurs maintained their 10 lead going into the 4th.

Then it happened. Something many of us have been waiting for all season. Perhaps it was genius, perhaps it was madness, perhaps it was pure desperation, but Reed Sheppard was turned loose on the Spurs. Not only did he pass and shoot well, he defended well, too. He almost single handedly sparked a comeback, swinging the game to the Rockets. With confidence the other Rockets played well, and got timely passes, too. The defense, very good in the third quarter, got even better. The offense, moribund in the third, came to life with a triple threat point guard leading the way. The Rockets won this quarter 29-14, and not so coincidentally, the game.

Alperen Sengun, after a not especially great first half, was dominant on both ends in the second. He finished with 20pts/13rbs/9ast. All of KD, Jabari and Amen had good games, too. KD didn’t shoot it as much, but he was 7 of 12, with 18pts/4rbs/7ast/1stl/1blk and an unfortunate 4 TO. Jabari was Dr Jaswishy, he went 7-13, and 3-5 from three, for 17pts/4rbs/1ast/1blk. Amen also had a very good game – 16pts/10rbs/6ast/1stl/2blk.

Then there was Reed, who as much as I have appreciated all that Josh Okogie brings to the table, should be starting. At point guard. He went for 21pts on 8-17 shooting, 4-10 from three, with 1rb/4ast/1stl/1blk and no turnovers in 29 minutes. He played good defense, after a fairly shaky first half. There’s no comeback without Reed. More Josh Okogie minutes won’t get the Rockets there.

Dorian Finney-Smith also looked like the players the Rockets signed. He kept Victor Wembanyama away from his spots in the second half. The Rockets overall defense really told in the second half. Here are the final shooting stats for the key Spurs. Wemby 5-21. Fox 6-15. Castle 5-19. Barnes 2-6. Champagnie, well, 8-17. Keldon Johnson drove right. Teams aren’t going to win many games in which they shoot 22 fewer shots than their opponents, but the Rocket can with the kind of defense they played in the second half of this game. The Spurs average 117 points per game, tonight they were held to 11 below that average.

This is the best win I can remember this season. I hope we see more of what we saw in that glorious fourth quarter going forward. We’re halfway through the season, with everything still to play for.

Houston Rockets vs. Philadelphia 76ers game preview

gettyimages-2205269627.jpg

Before we start with the preview, I want to thank Holly and Xiane for stepping in and handling the game previews while I was celebrating my brother’s marriage. As always, I’m worried that you guys liked them way more than me and will try to get rid of me. For now, you’re still stuck with me, but you should definitely continue enjoying their writing. They’re both great and deserve your attention.

The Houston Rockets finally won the second game of a back-to-back last week against a shorthanded Minnesota Timberwolves team. Those had been an issue for Houston because back-to-backs mean no Steven Adams. Now, Houston will be without Adams for an indefinite amount of time and have to navigate all games without their big Kiwi.

Their next test takes them to Philadelphia, where the 76ers have absolutely surprised a lot of people with their start to the season. We all knew Joel Embiid and Paul George would miss some games, and both have missed 19 contests so far. Still, Philly has thrived thanks to an MVP-level campaign from Tyrese Maxey, solid play from Quentin Grimes, and potential Rookie of the Year frontrunner V.J. Edgecomb. Those three have been the backbone of the squad with veterans like Kelly Oubre Jr. and Andre Drummond, the Sixers look to be in much better shape moving forward than they have at times in previous years.

And that doesn’t count Jared McCain, who was looking like the no-doubt Rookie of the Year last season before injuries ended his season early and then another one took him down right before this season started. He’s struggled so far this season and is with the G-League. If he figures things out, he adds another layer to Philly’s strategy and makes them even more difficult to defend.

Rockets Steven Adams out indefinitely with grade 3 ankle sprain

gettyimages-2255296617.jpg

The Houston Rockets’ third-ranked offensive attack hinges heavily on their ability to outmuscle opponents on the offensive glass. Houston’s 16.1 offensive rebounds pace the league.

And their 18.8 second-chance points also leads the league.

Unsurprisingly, the Rockets have four players that rank in the top-25 in offensive rebounds, in Steven Adams, Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson and Clint Capela.

That approach figures to look different for awhile.

Reserve center (and quasi-starter) Steven Adams will be out indefinitely, as he suffered an ankle injury in Houston’s 119-110 revenge victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Adams went down in the fourth quarter and had to be helped off the court by his teammates, which was a sign of the severity of the injury and degree of pain that Adams was in.

Adams has been diagnosed with a Grade 3 ankle sprain, which will force him to miss an extended amount of time.

According to Rockets coach Ime Udoka, Adams won’t be back anytime soon.

On the season, Adams is averaging 5.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.5 offensive rebounds and 50.4 percent from the field.

His 4.5 offensive boards leads the league.

That number illustrates exactly how dominant of a rebounder he’s been, as that’s not even his career-best.

It would rank as his fifth-best.

The Rockets are the team that’s best equipped to sustain an injury like this. It’s why they signed Capela in the summer.

To be able to execute their strategy of dominating on the glass, either with or without Adams in the lineup.

Although there is a clear drop off from Adams to Capela.

It helps that the All-Star break is coming up, as it gives Adams an additional week to rest, without missing any of the Rockets’ games.

Houston has 12 games until the All-Star break.

All told, Adams has missed nine games this season, and the Rockets have posted a 5-4 record in his absence.

Houston Rockets vs. Detroit Pistons game preview

gettyimages-2243271286.jpg

After a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Houston Rockets head to Detroit to take on a Pistons team that can be the first to sweep Houston this season.

These teams met back in October, and even with Jalen Duren getting ejected early, the Rockets allowed the Pistons to play their own style and never let Houston get going. Now, the Pistons are leading the Eastern Conference quite comfortably and the Rockets are trying to stay out of the play-in spots in the West.

The Rockets have been terrible on the second nights of back-to-backs, they finally got a win last week against the Anthony Edwards-less Minnesota Timberwolves. Will they get win #2 tonight?

Rockets rebound with 111-104 victory over Pistons

imagn-28071870.jpg

The Houston Rockets were struggling on the road and on the second night of a back-to-back, but they went into Detroit and beat one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference anyway, downing the Pistons 111-104 behind a total team effort.

Kevin Durant once again led the way, scoring 32 points on 11-for-19 shooting, including 5-for-11 from deep. He also pitched in 7 boards. 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. He also played pretty good defense all night, and the middie game was working.

Alperen Sengun had 19 points and 5 assists on 6-for-11 shooting. He had a lovely poster dunk, but he also doesn’t look completely healthy, which he has been open about. Reed Sheppard had 18 off of the bench, and though his three-ball wasn’t there, going just 1-for-7, he contributed down the stretch, hitting Cade Cunningham with a nasty hesi to take him to the cup for a bucket.

Reed Sheppard hesi.

— NBA (@NBA) January 24, 2026

He also played 25 minutes, and Ime Udoka must finally be listening to us, as Reed closed the game and was an essential component of the victory.

Amen Thompson pitched in 15 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and a block, while Jabari Smith Jr. had 11 points, 10 boards, 2 steals and a block and played the Dillon Brooks role by picking fights and being the emotional backbone on the court. He was also 5-for-9 shooting, the kind of side role we need to see from Jabari every night. Again, the man is just 22, one of the youngest on the team. High-end role player is still the ceiling with some more consistency.

Clint Capela had 5 points, 9 boards and 3 blocks as the backup center, and these type of performances will be needed to weather the storm with Steven Adams potentially out all year now.

This was one of the best team wins we’ve seen in a while, and especially with Houston’s road struggles, it meant much more. The Rockets move to 27-16 and are on roughly a 52-win pace, the same as last season. They currently sit in the four-seed and will be back in action Monday versus the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hope you’re all staying warm out there. Here in Pennsylvania, it’s current -7 degrees outside, and we’re waiting on a storm later today that’s dropping 12-16 inches of snow. A total of 45 states are currently under weather emergencies this weekend. Wherever you are, we hope you’re staying safe.

Is it time to worry about Ime Udoka?

gettyimages-2213137576.jpg

One of the best album titles, ever, is Jagged Little Pill.

Sure, we’ve all heard of the cliched tough pill to swallow. Morissette paints a more visceral picture. The pill isn’t hard to swallow due to its size. It’s jagged. That’s worse.

Here’s a jagged, medium-sized pill for Houston Rockets fans to swallow:

Ime Udoka may not be that great of an NBA head coach.

Rockets’ Head Coach Not Delivering

And listen, the stats don’t necessarily bear that out.

The Rockets’ 118.8 Offensive Rating lands fourth in the NBA. Their 6.1 Net Rating ranks in the same position. Yet, this points to a problem as well.

If the Rockets are ahead of the Spurs (5.2) and Nuggets (4.7) in Net Rating, how do they each have at least four more wins? The most plausible explanation, to my mind, would be late-game execution.

That’s a coaching issue.

Realistically, this storm of an article has been brewing all year. It’s been a recurring theme. Yes, the Rockets are performing relatively well. Is it fool’s gold? Is offensive rebounding and extra effort buoying an otherwise uninspired strategy?

Getting a lot of offensive rebounds is really good, but it can be mitigated down the stretch. When the game is on the line, you’re going to have problems if you don’t have some sophisticated pet plays to rely on.

More troublingly, evidence of Udoka’s fatal flaw predates his Rockets run. His 2021-22 Celtics had the NBA’s 9th-best Offensive Rating (113.6). The 2022-23 Celtics ranked second (117.3) in the same category. What changed?

Well, Boston lost Dennis Scroeder and added Malcolm Brogdon. That helped. If you think it solely contributed to a four-point increase in Offensive Rating, I’ve got a trail to sell you in Boston.

Udoka’s Celtics grinded. The offensive strategy was familiar to current-day Rockets fans: Try to score, please? Those Celtics didn’t emphasize offensive rebounding the same way (side note: The Rockets led the NBA in Offensive Rebound % in 2022-23. Is it possible that He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named instilled this habit?), but otherwise, their approach was similar. Put the ball in the hands of the best scorer. If he can’t score, get it to the second-best scorer. Etc.

Yet, winning cures all. Those Celtics went to the NBA Finals. Their roster was stacked with scorers and light on playmakers anyway, so Udoka was somewhat shielded from criticism. He was fired for unrelated reasons. We won’t get into it, but let’s just say someone may Nee(d) A Long time to get over it.

Ahem. Anyway, these Rockets are winning, but they’re not winning enough to insulate Udoka. This article will not be the first suggestion that he’s not doing an optimal job.

People are starting to talk.

Rockets’ Ime Udoka Must Keep An Open Mind

As of this writing, the Rockets’ last game was a loss to the 76ers.

Reed Sheppard did everything he could do to secure a win. He hit three triples in the first half of the fourth quarter. Sheppard was manipulating the geometry of the floor in Curry-esque fashion. He did everything he could:

But once Udoka pulled him, he couldn’t do anything.

Is Sheppard a defensive liability? You bet. He’s small, and he’s not even particularly quick.

Let’s ask some broader questions: If you win, does it matter how you win? If a small guard gives up two points in a forest only to generate three points without making a sound, does anybody score?

If the Rockets are scoring more than they’re giving up, they’re winning. The goal is to win, unless it’s to prove you’re tougher than everyone else?

This isn’t solely about Sheppard. We already did that. Sheppard is a microcosm. If Udoka isn’t willing to play the guy who’s driving the winning in a given moment because he contradicts his fundamental principles, surely those principles are flawed?

Let’s talk more about Sheppard. The basic pretense is that he’s small, and that’s a problem on defense. OK. Is Udoka a defensive genius or not?

Does “defensive genius” mean “only play guys who are positive defenders with plus positional size”? Did I just stumble into the realization that I’m a defensive genius? Am I Will Hunting? How do you like them apples?

Enough questions. Some will counter that these are impossible expectations. Udoka cannot alter Reed Sheppard’s size.

Fair. Here’s the counterargument: If Udoka can’t scheme for Sheppard, he’s not bringing enough to the table as an NBA head coach. He’s certainly not employed for his offensive acumen.

If Sheppard is simply impossible to work with, and he’s simply one of those players whose defense you have to live with, the Rockets need to either trade him or fire Udoka. Not because Udoka will never play him, but because there’s no point in retaining his services as a below-average offensive coach if there’s an unsolvable defensive problem on the roster.

Imagine if you hired someone to tutor your kid in math. They sit with your kid. They tell you that your kid is too bad at math to tutor, but they could paint your house for the same rate. You ask them if they’re good at painting:

“Not really”.

You’d hire a painter, right?

Rockets Should Thank Ime Udoka

Let’s be clear: This is not a fire Udoka piece. It’s not that simple. This is the juncture where we identify the positives.

Udoka has overhauled the Rockets’ culture. He has emphasized the value of extra effort, and it’s rubbed off on the young Rockets. That is good.

Perhaps most significantly, he found Alperen Sengun’s defensive role. Reductively, that’s all this article is asking him to do: Do that again. He deserves credit for taking Sengun out of drop coverage and having him defend in space by hedging and recovering. Surely there’s some solution for Sheppard?

If not: Thank you for your services, Mr. Udoka. You were a transitional coach. The type of coach who establishes a culture and good habits. That counts for a lot. Still, when it’s winning time, it doesn’t quite count for as much as offensive ingenuity does.

Even if that’s a jagged pill for Rockets fans to swallow.

What the Rockets should do with the absence of Steven Adams

gettyimages-2255296617.jpg

After Steven Adams left the game Sunday versus the New Orleans Pelicans with an apparent ankle injury, fans began speculating on the severity. Well, it was confirmed earlier this week that Adams has a grade-three ankle sprain, so fans should not be expecting him back anytime soon, as a grade-three ankle sprain can take up to nine weeks or more. The nine-week timeline would mean that it is possible Houston would not see Adams return until mid to late March, which would be right before the playoffs. It’s even possible he misses the season.

The Rockets confirmed center Steven Adams is dealing with a Grade 3 ankle sprain, an injury marked by a complete tear of at least one of the ankle ligaments. The average time lost for G3 ankle sprains in the NBA is 62.9 days (~28 games).

However, one benefit this Rockets team has is its depth, as Houston would be able to deploy numerous other players at center without even considering Alperen Sengun. If Houston wanted to continue to use the double-big lineup, Ime Udoka could utilize Clint Capela. Afterall, Houston did sign Capela as a way to ensure that with or without Steven Adams, the Rockets would be able to play big and dominate the glass. There is a definite drop-off from Capela to Adams, but Capela can still fill his role nicely.

However, Capela is not the only option, as Houston could turn away from the double big lineup and go for a small ball approach. In this case, two players come to mind as options: Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. Every Rockets fan is unfortunately familiar with the Golden State Warriors dynasty. Durant played a lot of small-ball center when Golden State would roll out their death-ball lineup, especially in the 2017-2018 playoffs. Additonally, Jabari Smith Jr. also has experience playing the five, but his overall skills are much more limited, but perhaps he will receive some opportunities to help aid his development.

Additonally Dorian Finney-Smith, Tari Eason, and Jeff Green could also fill in as centers, but due to Finney-Smith and Eason’s potential lack of ability, I doubt that will be explored as often. As for Jeff Green, so far this season, he has not been getting many minutes at all outside of garbage time, and it is clear Capela has likely supplanted him as that reserve center option.

Houston is back in action Monday at home versus the Memphis Grizzlies for Steven Adams and Reed Sheppard bobblehead night. Tip-off is at 7:00. As always, be sure to check back here at The Dream Shake for pre- and post-game coverage of the game.

Rockets reportedly interested in Pelicans Jose Alvarado

imagn-25625110.jpg

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard. And noticed.

The Houston Rockets need a point guard.

Although it’s not as bad as it seems.

There’s a difficult path, as it pertains to acquiring an external one. Houston is just $1.2 million under the apron.

The NBA’s hard cap is real.

We know this.

We’ve seen Rockets coach Ime Udoka deploy a hodgepodge of methods toward replacing Fred VanVleet.

Or attempting to.

No option has been perfect. Amen Thompson running point takes him away from his best offensive skills, which is attacking, cutting to the rim and slashing.

Instead, it leaves him at the top of the key, oftentimes standing around and/or taking low-percentage threes.

Kevin Durant has been relied on to handle some of the playmaking and offensive initiation, but he’s rather turnover prone. Especially when blitzed or trapped.

Reed Sheppard is a good option, save for the fact that he gets hunted defensively. He’s thrived in an off-ball role.

JD Davison is a decent fall back, but you don’t necessarily want to be relying on a two-way signee for offensive playmaking and creation.

Especially not the bulk of it. And he’s the best pick-and-roll point guard on the roster.

According to Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime, the Rockets have interest in New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jose Alvarado.

“Jose Alvarado.. The Houston Rockets—they have kind of did some background on Alvarado.”

Alvarado is a defensive pest. He’s also the type of player who you hate when he’s not on your team but absolutely love to have on your team.

He’s a hell of a spark off the bench and is infectious.

In 22 minutes of action, he averages 7.9 points, 3.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds one steal, 42.4 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from three (4.4 attempts) and 82.6 percent from the foul line.

He has a player option next season worth $4.5 million and has a $4.5 million number this season also, making him a realistic target, should they decide to look into making a move.

There will be competition for his services, however, as Haynes also reported the New York Knicks are interested in Alvarado’s services as well.

Houston Rockets vs. Memphis Grizzlies game preview

gettyimages-2244732661.jpg

The Memphis Grizzlies were supposed to play a game yesterday against the Denver Nuggets. However, due to bad weather that is sweeping across the United States, the game was postponed. Now, the Grizzlies will travel to Houston and be relatively rested if a bit disheveled.

The Rockets and Grizzlies are both around tenth in adjusted defensive efficiency, which means both give up about 114 points per 100 possessions. The difference between the teams is on offense, where Houston is fifth and Memphis is twenty-fifth.

Memphis’s best player, by efficiency, is Cam Spencer. I doubt anyone had that on their Bingo cards, but here we are. He’s got a true shooting percentage of 66.9% and assists on 33% of Memphis’s made shots while he’s on the floor. Jock Landale, freed from Houston’s “Go grab rebounds” play style, has flourished as well. Jaren Jackson Jr., Jaylen Wells, rookie Cedric Coward, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will get the majority of the rest of the minutes.

Memphis is dealing with plenty of injuries (see below) and seem headed for a future as sellers at the trade deadline.
