A Dark Horse Candidate Has Emerged To Sign Pete Alonso

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth place in the National League Central.

While the Reds have not had much recent success, their young and talented roster gives the team hope for future seasons.

The Reds made several notable acquisitions this offseason, including trading for pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux, catcher Jose Trevino, and pitcher Taylor Rogers.

While none of these players jump out as game-changers, the Reds could potentially be pursuing a free-agent first baseman who has yet to sign with a team for the 2025 season.

According to Jon Heyman, the Reds could develop as a dark horse Pete Alonso landing spot as his free agency drags on.

With the 2025 season right around the corner, Alonso’s free agency has yet to conclude, as his talks with the New York Mets have seemingly stalled.

Alonso joined the Mets in 2019 and has played with them for all six seasons of his MLB career.

In 2024, Alonso played in all 162 games, batting .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS.

The Reds could use a power right-handed bat in their lineup to complement the speed of their star shortstop, Elly De La Cruz.

While most people likely think Alonso will end up going back to the Mets in 2025, the fact that a deal hasn’t been completed in this amount of time could give other teams a chance.

Report: Reds Tried To Trade For White Sox Veteran

The Cincinnati Reds are known for their star shortstop Elly De La Cruz, but the team overall hasn’t done well in recent years.

While the Reds have a talented roster, they missed the postseason for a fourth straight year in 2024 after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth in the National League Central.

This offseason, the Reds have acquired veteran players including pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux, catcher Jose Trevino and outfielder Austin Hays.

They also reportedly tried to trade for another veteran player from the Chicago White Sox.

“The Reds worked with the White Sox on a Luis Robert Jr. trade before pivoting to Austin Hays, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon,” B/R Walk-Off wrote on X.

— B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) January 30, 2025

Robert has played all five seasons of his MLB career with the White Sox.

In 2024, he played in 100 games and batted .224 with 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and a .657 OPS.

Although Robert had a down year, he battled injuries and played for one of the worst teams in MLB history.

In 2023 with the White Sox, a healthy Robert played in 145 games and batted .264 with 38 home runs, 80 RBIs and an .857 OPS.

After the Reds weren’t able to come to a deal with the White Sox, they signed Hays away from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hays is a downgrade from Robert, but the Reds likely avoided trading away multiple prospects to acquire the outfielder.

Insider Says 1 MLB Team Has Had A ‘Really Interesting’ Offseason

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for a fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth in the National League Central.

Since 2014, the Reds have made one postseason appearance, which came in 2020 when they were swept in the wild-card series.

While the Reds have not had recent success, their young and talented roster gives them hope for the future.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently revealed his thoughts on their offseason moves so far.

“The Reds have been really interesting, all offseason actually,” Rosenthal said, via Foul Territory.
The @Reds have had a really interesting offseason, says @Ken_Rosenthal on the latest Fair Territory pic.twitter.com/7nSRpaX83a

— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) January 30, 2025

Rosenthal speaks about the multiple moves the Reds have made, which he describes as “medium.”

Some of the acquisitions the Reds have made include trading for pitcher Brady Singer from the Kansas City Royals, second baseman Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and pitcher Taylor Rodgers from the San Francisco Giants.

Along with the trades, the Reds signed free agent outfielder Austin Hays from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rosenthal points out that these moves give the roster a more veteran feel, and they could be a good complement to their young and talented players, a group that includes one of the most electric young players in the game in shortstop Elly De La Cruz.

The Reds will try to win their first division title since 2012 and win their first World Series title since 1990.

Reds Signed Free Agent Outfielder On Tuesday

The Cincinnati Reds have not fared well over the past several seasons as they have one playoff appearance since 2014.

Last year was another tough season as they finished with a record of 77-85 and fourth in the National League Central.

The Reds are hopeful that their young and talented roster can take the next step and get the team back to a competitive level in 2025.

This offseason, the Reds have added a few players, including starting pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux and catcher Jose Trevino.

The Reds also recently added an outfielder to their roster.

“Reds, OF Austin Hays agree to deal, per multiple reports including MLB Network insider Jon Heyman,” MLB wrote on X.

— MLB (@MLB) January 28, 2025

Hays came into the league in 2017 with the Baltimore Orioles and was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2024 season.

In 2024 with the Orioles and Phillies, Hays played in 85 games and batted .255 with five home runs, 20 RBIs and a .699 OPS.

Although those numbers don’t jump off the page, he did hit double-digit home runs in three straight years with the Orioles, which suggests the power is there.

Hays failed to play more than 100 games for the first time since 2020, and if he can stay healthy, he should be an asset for this lineup.

The Reds are seeking their first NL Central title since 2012 and their first playoff appearance since 2020 as they prepare for the 2025 season.

Elly De La Cruz Makes An Exciting Announcement

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth place in the National League Central.

Although the Reds have struggled in recent years, their young core of players is still developing, and the team’s future appears bright.

One of those young players is shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who is only 23 years old and an electric five-tool player.

De La Cruz made an exciting announcement on social media on Monday.

“I’m excited to be on the cover of MLB the show 25,” De La Cruz said via B/R Walk-Off on ‘X.’

De La Cruz announced that he would be the newest player to appear on the cover of the MLB The Show video game.

Some other star players to appear on the cover of the game include Fernando Tatis Jr. in 2021, Shohei Ohtani in 2022, Jazz Chisholm Jr. in 2023, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2024.

De La Cruz came into the league with the Reds in 2023 and has played for the organization for both of his seasons in the MLB.

In 2024, De La Cruz played in 160 games where he batted .259 with 25 home runs, 76 RBIs, 67 stolen bases, and a .809 OPS.

The MLB took notice of De La Cruz’s electric speed as soon as he made his debut in 2023, and he led the entire league in stolen bases in 2024.

While the Reds have struggled as a group, their young players are talented, and it will be interesting to see if they make the next step in 2025.

Analyst Reveals Why The Reds Acquired Gavin Lux

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth place in the National League Central.

Since 2013, the Reds have only made the postseason once time, and that ended with them being swept in the wild-card round.

The Reds have only made a couple of moves this offseason, but that is likely due to their young and talented roster of players that have been developing over the last few years.

One trade that the Reds made this offseason includes acquiring Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

MLB Analyst Cliff Floyd revealed why he believes the Reds traded for Lux.

“Put some pressure on what you have in camp,” Floyd said via MLB Network on ‘X.’
"Put some pressure on what you have in camp. I think Terry Francona is putting Gavin [Lux} in position to win a job from one of these guys."

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) January 14, 2025

While Lux has been productive for the Dodgers in his career, Floyd believes that Reds manager Terry Francona could have brought Lux in to push some of the Reds players to be better.

The young and talented Reds team has underperformed over the last couple of seasons, and Floyd believes this might be a move to get more out of them this season.

Lux came into the league in 2019 with the Dodgers and has played all five seasons of his MLB career with the team.

In 2024, Lux played 139 games where he batted .251 with 10 home runs, 50 RBIs, and a .703 OPS.

The Reds likely won’t have a spot for Lux to play every day, but he could have been brought in to fight for a starting spot and stir up some competition in the clubhouse.

Will Benson Reveals What He Expects From Terry Francona This Season

The Cincinnati Reds have not had much success recently as they have made the postseason once in the past 11 seasons.

In the 2024 season, the Reds finished fourth in the NL Central with a record of 77-85.

The Reds will have a new face leading their team in 2025 as the team signed veteran manager Terry Francona.

Outfielder Will Benson recently revealed what he expects Francona will bring to the team this season.

“I think that’s a great move for our team because one, his presence alone is going to put a fire in us. I think what we needed most is for someone to hold us accountable …,” Benson said, via MLB Network.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 25, 2024

Benson expressed his positive views on Francona, and his experience being managed by him in his rookie season with the Cleveland Guardians in 2022.

Francona expects his players to play hard and leave everything out on the field, and Benson describes how the 65-year-old can light a fire under his roster.

The Reds have a young group in general, and Benson is one of those players at 26 years old.

Last season, Benson played in 128 games and batted .187 with 14 home runs, 43 RBIs and a .650 OPS.

The presence of Francona in the clubhouse may give young Reds players the leadership they require to take the next step in their development.

Although the Reds haven’t won the NL Central since 2012, the team should be healthier heading into 2025, which should help Francona get off to a good start.

Terry Francona Reveals What He’s Learned Throughout His Career

CINCINNATI, OHIO - OCTOBER 07: Terry Francona , the new Manager of the Cincinnati Reds talks to the media at Great American Ball Park on October 07, 2024 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Cincinnati Reds had another rough season in 2024 as they missed the postseason for the fourth straight year finishing with a record of 77 wins and 85 losses.

While the Reds have not had success recently, their young and talented roster has shown signs of what they’re capable of and success might be just around the corner.

2025 will see a new face as Manager of the Reds as Veteran Manager Terry Francona joins the organization.

Francona is a three-time Manager of the Year Award winner, and he revealed what he’s learned about the Manager position throughout his career.

“When you’re the Manager, you’re supposed to think of everybody but yourself,” Francona said.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 24, 2024

Francona began his managing career in 1997 with the Philadelphia Phillies and he has also managed the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians/Guardians.

He has won two World Series titles in his career, both coming with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007.

Francona says that the manager is supposed to think of everybody but themselves and put the team first.

This approach has helped him become the successful manager he is today, and he hopes to take that experience to get the Reds to the next level in 2025.

The Reds don’t have a playoff win in the last 12 seasons, but the young talent on their roster including star shortstop Elly De La Cruz, give them hope for the coming seasons.

Francona has the 13th most wins all time by a manager with 1,950, and the Reds hope that his experience will help them win the National League Central for the first time since 2012.

Reds, Nick Martinez Agree To Qualifying Offer

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - SEPTEMBER 27: Nick Martinez #28 of the Cincinnati Reds delivers a pitch during the first inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on September 27, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight year in 2024 as they finished with a record of 77 wins and 85 losses.

After missing the postseason in 2024, the Reds have now made the playoffs only one time in the last 11 seasons.

The Reds will check out their options in free agency this offseason as they prepare for the 2025 season and try to win the National League Central for the first time since 2012.

One Reds pitcher will be returning to the club in 2025 as they came to an agreement on Monday.

According to FOX Sports: MLB on ‘X,’ pitcher Nick Martinez has accepted the 1-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Reds for the 2024 season.

Nick Martinez has accepted the 1-year, $21.05M qualifying offer from the Reds

per multiple sources pic.twitter.com/YPhbfEuMbG

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) November 18, 2024

Martinez came into the league in 2014 with the Texas Rangers and played his first season with the Reds in 2024.

He appeared in 42 games for the club and had a record of 10 wins and seven losses with a 3.10 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 142.1 innings pitched.

A qualifying offer in the MLB is calculated by the average salary of the 125 highest-paid players in the league, which in this case was $21.05 million.

The offer can be made by a club to a player before the onset of free agency if they have never received a qualifying offer before and spent the entire season on that team’s roster.

Martinez had a solid year for the Reds in 2024, and he should make a positive impact on the starting rotation/bullpen next season.

The Reds will continue to try and build the best roster they can for 2025 as they try to get the organization back on the winning track.

Elly De La Cruz Remains On A Historic Pace

As of Friday afternoon, the second-ranked player in stolen bases, Jose Caballero, has 17.

The leader, Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz, has a whopping 30 thefts.

30!

It’s not even June.

Heck, it’s not even late-May, but De La Cruz is a special player and special players do these things.

De La Cruz started Thursday’s game with 26 steals for the year.

By the time it finished, he was at 30: he stole four bags, and has become a nightmare on the basepaths for pitchers and infielders.

“Four stolen bases tonight. 30 on the season. Elly De La Cruz is on a historic pace,” MLB tweeted with a video of De La Cruz working his magic.

— MLB (@MLB) May 17, 2024

Hugh Nicol, with 138, is the franchise leader in single-season stolen bases but that came in the old American Association in the late 1800s.

If you want the modern single-season leader in franchise history, you would have to go to 1986 when Eric Davis stole 80.

That’s a hefty total, but if De La Cruz manages to keep his current pace, he has a very solid chance of setting the modern Reds record.

If you want a more recent comparison of De La Cruz’s current pace, Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. had 18 thefts last year as of May 17.

He finished the year with 73.

Imagine how far can the Reds phenom go if he doesn’t take his foot off the gas.

Can he surpass Acuna?

Can he reach 100?

Those are all optimistic goals, but they are very much realistic.

We are talking about a generational talent who also has incredible power (he has eight doubles and nine homers to this point, too) and jaw-dropping raw tools.
