News Rams Team Notes

Which contracts can Rams restructure to create cap space? The options are limited

Like every other team, the Los Angeles Rams have often used restructuring contracts as a way to create cap space. It’s not the same as asking a player to take a pay cut, but rather a method of freeing up money in the current year by increasing that player’s cap hit in future seasons.

The Rams restructured Aaron Donald’s contract last year before he retired to create $9.2 million in cap room, and they also restructured Cooper Kupp’s contract in 2023 to free up around $10 million that year. Restructuring essentially gives the player more money up front and makes it harder for the team to move on from him in the future.

Los Angeles isn’t strapped for cash this offseason but it could benefit from some additional cap space, especially with Matthew Stafford needing a raise if he’s going to stay with the team. Unfortunately, the Rams don’t have many options available when it comes to players who could have their contracts restructured, based on Over The Cap’s numbers.

There are eight players who would create at least $1 million in cap space if their contracts were restructured, which is a good number. However, it’s the statuses of those players that make it extremely difficult and unlikely to restructure their contracts.

PlayerPotential savings
Matthew Stafford$12.9M
Cooper Kupp$9.4M
Jonah Jackson$8.2M
Kevin Dotson$7.7M
Rob Havenstein$3.5M
Darious Williams$3.4M
Colby Parkinson$3.3M
Tyler Higbee$2.6M

Let’s start with Stafford. The Rams aren’t going to restructure his contract, knowing they’re going to either sign him to an extension or trade him. Kupp is expected to be traded or released, so his deal isn’t going to be restructured, either.

Jackson is a potential cap casualty and restructuring his deal will make it more difficult for the Rams to move on from him, so that’s not an option. The same applies for Williams and Parkinson, who are also candidates to be cut this offseason.

Havenstein and Higbee are both in the final year of their contracts, though they do have void years left on their deals; two for Havenstein and one for Higbee. Technically, the Rams could restructure their deals and simply increase the dead money for each player in 2026, but that seems unlikely.

That leaves Dotson as the only legitimate candidate to have his contract restructured. He’s certain to be back this year and will probably remain with the team through the end of his contract in 2026. Restructuring his deal would free up $7.7 million this year, while simultaneously increasing his cap hit in 2026.

If the Rams are confident Dotson will keep playing at a high level through 2026, it makes sense to restructure his contract and save money this year – if they feel they need more cap space right now. If Les Snead is confident the Rams don’t need more room in 2025, there’s no sense in restructuring Dotson or anyone else.

Kobie Turner weighs in on Matthew Stafford trade rumors: 'Nine is my quarterback'

If it were up to Kobie Turner, Matthew Stafford would remain the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback. Unfortunately for fans who want to see No. 9 back in a Rams uniform in 2025, it’s not up to the young defensive tackle.

With the Rams and Stafford trying to work out a new contract, rumors have swirled about the possibility of the veteran quarterback being traded. Turner hopes that doesn’t happen because he doesn’t want anyone besides Stafford under center for the Rams.

“Nine is my quarterback,” Turner told talkSPORT. “If we go a different direction, then obviously we’ll pivot. But at the end of the day, Matthew Stafford is my quarterback. I trust him. There’s nobody else that I’d rather go into one of those situations where you really need the quarterback to step up and lead a drive than Matthew Stafford.”

Stafford had the Rams on the cusp of an NFC championship appearance when he drove the offense down the field in the snow against the Eagles and was 13 yards away from a game-winning touchdown. That’s the sort of leadership Turner is talking about because when Stafford is on the field, the Rams always feel like they have a chance to win.

It’s hard to know which direction these negotiations will go, but Turner is confident Stafford and the Rams will work something out.

“Obviously, my opinion doesn’t mean so much in the grand scheme of things,” he said. “I’m sure they’re going to work something out. I think he loves being a Ram and the Rams definitely love having him, and we as a team, we rally behind him.”

If the Rams bring Stafford back, there’s no question they’re going to be a Super Bowl contender in 2025. With a talented young defense and an offense that features Puka Nacua and a stout offensive line, Los Angeles is built to win now with Stafford leading the way.

“I think we have a lot that we’re going to be able to show,” Turner said of the Rams’ outlook in 2025. “To have a defense that has played the way that we have over the course of the year and be the cheapest defense in the league, that’s something within itself. I think we’re going to be able to put it all together. Hopefully stay a little bit more healthy next year and put ourselves in positions to win the games that we need to to get to the big one.”

Jaguars hire Rams' James Gladstone as general manager

The Los Angeles Rams are losing a key member of their front office. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced they are hiring James Gladstone as their next general manager, replacing the recently fired Trent Baalke.

Gladstone, 34, has spent the last eight years with the Rams, including the last four as their director of scouting strategy. He’s played an integral role in the draft process, working in tandem with general manager Les Snead to identify prospects and undrafted free agents.

The Rams knocked it out of the park with their last two draft classes and Gladstone played a major part in that, helping identify Puka Nacua, Steve Avila, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Jared Verse, Braden Fiske and others as fits in Los Angeles.

We have agreed to terms with James Gladstone to become our General Manager. pic.twitter.com/nlLyiWlTed

— Jacksonville Jaguars (@Jaguars) February 21, 2025

It’s a significant loss for the Rams but a massive move for Gladstone, who becomes a general manager at the young age of 34. He’ll work with former Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen in Jacksonville, whom the Jaguars hired as their new head coach this offseason.

Drew Brees isn't surprised Rams are moving on from Cooper Kupp

Drew Brees knows what it’s like to be dumped by the team that drafted you, which is something Cooper Kupp will most likely experience this offseason. The Los Angeles Rams have informed Kupp that they intend to trade him, effectively moving on from the wide receiver after eight seasons.

Kupp’s announcement shocked a lot of people when he shared the news on social media but Brees isn’t surprised by the Rams’ decision. Having played 20 years in the NFL, he’s seen it all, so not much surprises him anymore.

He thinks a fresh start could be good for both parties and gets why the Rams are moving on from the former All-Pro receiver.

“I don’t think anything surprises me anymore,” Brees told DJ Siddiqi of The Sports Daily. “Everybody has their reasons, and at times, when it comes to guys being in a place for a long period of time, it’s just time for something different. I think that goes for both sides. Who knows what the conversations were behind closed doors. Cooper Kupp has been a phenomenal player for a really long time and been a huge contributor to the Ram. At the same time at some point that has to end, and regardless of whose decision it is or if it’s mutual, teams and players come together and it’s like, ‘Hey, it’s time for a fresh start elsewhere.  It’s time for us to move on.’”

A big reason for this impending split is Kupp’s contract. He has a cap hit of $29.78 million in 2025 and $27.33 million in 2026, so he’s taking up a significant portion of the Rams’ cap. Not to mention, he’s also played just 33 games in the last three seasons, missing time each year due to injuries.

Brees thinks the Rams probably see an aging and oft-injured player who’s become quite expensive and feel they can find a replacement for significantly less money in the draft.

”The Rams I think have proven that they can draft well and they can identify diamonds in the rough.” Brees said. “Cooper Kupp was not a highly recruited guy. Puka Nacua was not — he was a mid-round guy. Kyren Williams, mid-round guy. All of a sudden you’ve drafted all these Pro Bowl, All-Pro guys in the mid-round. In their mind, they’re thinking, ‘Man, we’ll go out and find some other guys that we can grow, we can develop, put with Matthew Stafford, put in this offense, and we’ll make them great players.’ “I’m sure that’s the way they look at it.”

Rams take championship-winning OT in new mock draft

What the Los Angeles Rams do in the 2025 NFL draft hinges on a few key questions. The futures of Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp will be at the forefront, but there are several other concerns across the roster with a bevy of impending free agents.

The Rams currently own the No. 26 pick, which sits in a good spot for a team that needs help at offensive line, receiver and linebacker. Since Los Angeles doesn’t have a second-round selection, this pick will serve as a table-setter for what the Rams do the rest of the way.

While there are a few different directions the Rams could go here, The 33rd Team’s Kyle Crabbs believes Los Angeles will select Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons with their pick. At 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, Simmons would be an immediate fill-in if the Rams don’t bring back Alaric Jackson. Simmons has played more than 1,000 snaps at left tackle for the Buckeyes over the past two seasons after he started at right tackle in 2021.

The Rams’ offensive line renaissance is well underway,” Crabbs wrote. “The team has remodeled the interior in recent years thanks to additions like Kevin Dotson, Jonah Jackson and Steve Avila. The left tackle spot remains open long-term, however. In a world in which Josh Simmons doesn’t suffer a season-ending leg injury, he’s likely gone at least 10 spots earlier than this — making this Rams pick an opportunistic cherry on top to their line evolution.”

As Crabbs alluded to in his analysis, Simmons played in just six games this past season after he sustained a season-ending knee surgery on Oct. 21. Simmons’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN back in December that the lineman “will be fully cleared for practice by the start of NFL training camp” and won’t miss any NFL games. It helps that Simmons was also invited to NFL Combine on Feb. 27, though it’s unclear what activities he’ll participate in.

Rams Wire’s Justin Melo picked Simmons as a potential first-round target for L.A., too, alongside Texas’ Kelvin Banks Jr. and Oregon’s Josh Conerly Jr.

The Rams will need offensive line help even if Jackson returns in 2025. This unit was a revolving door of injuries with 10 different lineman playing at least 190 snaps this season. Simmons could either be a replacement for Jackson on the left side and/or be the heir to Rob Havenstein’s position on the right side.

Rams go on the offensive in new 7-round PFF mock draft

The Los Angeles Rams currently have seven picks in the first six rounds of the 2025 NFL draft. This could change as the spring draws closer, but for now, L.A. is slated to pick at No. 26.

Pundit predictions are all over the place, but most agree the Rams should go offense with this pick — either to find a new receiver or offensive lineman. Pro Football Focus recently released its seven-round mock draft for the Rams and mostly concurred with a few twists of their own.

Matthew Stafford is 'the name to watch' for Raiders, in part thanks to Tom Brady

The Las Vegas Raiders need a quarterback as badly as any team in the NFL. They’re desperate to find a franchise signal caller, especially with Pete Carroll taking over as the head coach.

They’ll be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, whether during the draft or in free agency – or even via trade. According to The Athletic, Matthew Stafford is “the name to watch” if the Rams end up trading him, putting them among the teams that could be vying for the veteran quarterback this offseason.

Of course, the Raiders will only have a shot to land Stafford if the Rams can’t sign him to an extension, but it sounds like they’d be interested if it comes to that.

Furthermore, with Tom Brady as a part owner of the franchise, his influence could help lure talent to Las Vegas. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “the persuasiveness of Tom Brady as a recruiter for the Raiders” is something to keep an eye on.

“It’s why you can’t rule out Matthew Stafford as an option,” he wrote.

Something to keep an eye on, per sources: the persuasiveness of Tom Brady as a recruiter for the @Raiders. It will make things interesting during free agency. And maybe even in the trade market. It’s why you can’t rule out Matthew Stafford as an option.

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) February 23, 2025

Bonsignore also reported that the compensation in any trade for Stafford will be affected by how much money the acquiring team is going to pay Stafford. The Rams reportedly want at least a first-round pick, but interested teams will “try to keep it to” a second-rounder and maybe more.

Per source: Compensation will be affected by the amount of $ new team is giving on a new contract. But @RamsNFL would want 1+

Interested teams would try to keep it to 2+ https://t.co/dl5LEhc9Ix

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) February 23, 2025

The Raiders can now be considered one of the many teams that may be interested in Stafford if the Rams move their quarterback, along with the Giants and Steelers – two other teams that have been floated as potential landing spots.

None of this matters if the Rams sign him to a new contract, but that’s not guaranteed to happen.

The Rams hired Aaron Rodgers' former QB coach, who he loved in Green Bay. Coincidence?

It’s anyone’s guess as to who will be the Los Angeles Rams’ starting quarterback in Week 1 but it’s getting tough to ignore the dots connecting them to Aaron Rodgers. While they want to work something out with Matthew Stafford to keep him in L.A., Rodgers’ name is one that keeps coming up as a potential replacement if the Rams trade Stafford.

Then on Monday, the Rams made a fascinating addition to their coaching staff: Alex Van Pelt as a senior offensive assistant. Van Pelt was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator last season, but what makes this hire especially interesting is the job he held from 2014-2017.

He was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach for those four years, the same time during which Rodgers was Green Bay’s starter.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But perhaps not. Maybe the Rams really are angling to bring in Rodgers as their next quarterback if they ship Stafford out of town.

Not only was Van Pelt the team’s quarterbacks coach for four years, but Rodgers loved him. Packers Wire’s own Zach Kruse wrote about Rodgers’ frustration when Mike McCarthy let Van Pelt go in 2018, a decision the quarterback wasn’t happy about.

“My quarterback coach didn’t get retained. I thought that was an interesting change, really without consulting me,” Rodgers said. “There’s a close connection between quarterback and quarterback coach. And that was an interesting decision.”

Aaron Nagler of CheeseheadTV is as tied into the Packers as anyone and he says Rodgers went “scorched earth” when McCarthy didn’t retain Van Pelt in 2018. Nagler also noted that Rodgers “loved Van Pelt.”

The Van Pelt thing is not insignificant btw. Rodgers went scoarched Earth when McCarthy let him walk and brought in Frank Cignetti. 12 loved Van Pelt.

— Aaron Nagler (@AaronNagler) February 24, 2025

Rodgers is known for wanting to bring in his own guys wherever he goes. He got Davante Adams to New York, along with Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard and others. The Jets even hired Nathaniel Hackett in 2023, Rodgers’ first year in New York.

What if the Rams hired Van Pelt to attract Rodgers to Los Angeles in the event that they don’t retain Stafford? It seems unlikely that this is all one big coincidence.

And if you want to connect more dots, the Giants – who inquired about Stafford last season and have talked to the Rams about him this offseason – hired Stafford’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, as their assistant quarterbacks coach.

Is this all just setting up for Stafford to be dealt to the Giants and Rodgers to sign with the Rams? We’ll see.

Rams HC Sean McVay named a top offensive play-caller for 2025 season

By now, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is considered by many as one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. It’s why he’s had a top-10 scoring office in five of his eight years running the team with an 8-5 playoff record and a Super Bowl victory.

While there are plenty of other good offensive play-callers in the NFL, McVay remains one of the elite. The 33rd Team’s Dan Pizzuta ranked McVay as the second-best offensive play-caller heading into the 2025 season, behind only the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan.

“Like Shanahan, McVay has been a master of evolution and change. The Jared Goff offense looks nothing like the Matthew Stafford offense, and even the current Stafford offense doesn’t look like what it did when he was first acquired.

The Los Angeles Rams pivoted from their zone-heavy system to more gap running, which opened up more in the passing game, too. Los Angeles bounced around between the pistol offense that finished 2023, the empty offense that worked through 2021, and a more traditional dropback game.”

It should also be noted that the three of the six play-callers that come after both are branches from either Shanahan or McVay.

McVay’s adaptability has been his calling card. He’s created offenses tailored around two different quarterbacks while adding or subtracting talent around them as needed. His coached around adversity as well, including major injuries to offensive stalwarts like Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Todd Gurley and Puka Nacua. This is a big reason why he constantly makes “under 40 lists,” like this most recent one from The Athletic.

The Rams’ quick turnaround from the Super Bowl into a perennial contending doesn’t happen without McVay. And while it may not be the reason, faith in McVay could be another reason why the Rams are suddenly interested in moving on from Stafford and Kupp.

The 2025 season will be a big one for McVay to keep showing he knows what he’s doing from the sideline.

7 positions the Rams should watch closely at the 2025 NFL combine

Les Snead and Sean McVay will not be in attendance at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis, but you can be sure they’ll be watching these prospects from afar. Whether it’s on-field drills or athletic testing, the Rams will use the tape and numbers from Indy to find the next diamond in the rough.

With several positions of need leading into the combine, they have multiple groups to keep a close eye on. They’ll have to watch the quarterbacks intentionally with Matthew Stafford’s future uncertain, and with Cooper Kupp set to be traded, they could also use a wide receiver or two.

Here are seven positions for the Rams to watch at the combine.

Report: Aaron Rodgers prefers to play for Rams, would bring Davante Adams with him

If the Los Angeles Rams move on from Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp this offseason, they could replace that tandem with another veteran QB-WR combo.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Aaron Rodgers prefers to play for the Rams next season in the event that L.A. trades away Stafford. There have been rumors linking Rodgers to the Rams, given his ties to the West Coast, but this is the first legitimate report about his interest in playing for Los Angeles.

Not only does Rodgers want to play for Sean McVay’s team, but he would like to bring Davante Adams to L.A. with him once he becomes a free agent.

Sources tell the Daily News that Rodgers, 41, prefers to play for the Rams and that the outgoing Jets QB would bring Davante Adams with him once the Jets wide receiver becomes a free agent.

So hypothetically, the Rams could acquire significant assets by trading Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Then they could also add Rodgers and Adams to a Sean McVay offense with No. 1 wide receiver Puka Nacua and running back Kyren Williams.

Rodgers is from California and has a house in Malibu where he lives in the offseason, so it’s not hard to make the connection between him and the Rams.

Furthermore, the Rams just hired his former quarterback coach, Alex Van Pelt, as a senior offensive assistant – a coach Rodgers loved in Green Bay. Is that merely a coincidence or are the Rams preparing to bring in Rodgers?

Los Angeles’ first priority is working out a deal with Stafford but if the two sides can’t come to an agreement, it seems very possible that Rodgers will be the starting quarterback next season.

3 bold predictions for Tutu Atwell’s 2025 season

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

What kind of season would it take to make Atwell’s contract worth it?

Tutu Atwell is often considered a second round bust, but has found his way back on the roster for at least another year after signing a $10 million fully-guaranteed contract with the Los Angeles Rams.

Atwell has been used primarily as a distraction to open the middle of the field for his peers rather than a speedy deep threat for Matthew Stafford to target, but in his limited opportunities last season, did prove he can be relied on when his number is called on? With an opportunity to earn a long-term contract after this year here are my bold predictions for Tutu Atwell.

Tutu has a career-long touchdown catch in 2025

Atwell’s blazing speed makes him an obvious target for explosive opportunities down the field and while he doesn’t often see the ball go his way he has had some success. His longest reception to date happens to also be his first touchdown of his career which occurred in 2022 against the New Orleans Saints that went for 62 yards.

Matthew Stafford. Tutu Atwell. 62 yards! #RamsHouse

: #LARvsNO on FOX
: Stream on NFL+ https://t.co/rkxfGHKoLD pic.twitter.com/oMHQ4JKrzP

— NFL (@NFL) November 20, 2022

In 2023, he had a 44-yard reception and in 2024 he had a 50-yard reception. With Matthew Stafford back and presumably a larger role in the offense for Atwell, you can bet that Sean McVay will be dialing up some deep passes to his undersized-receiver.

My Prediction: A 75-yard touchdown reception that breaks his previous long.

Atwell receives 85% of the snaps

Demarcus Robinson finished last season with 82% of the snap counts in the third receiver role, while Atwell saw the field just 39% of the time. Depending on how the offseason goes, Atwell should see a similar snap count if he can stay healthy, but I think he will see even more. The offense is scarier when the former Louisville receiver is on the field as secondaries have to play honest against him which will create opportunities for other receivers on the field.

McVay will want the Atwell on the field as often as possible to make opposing defenses predictible. My Prediction: Atwell gets 85% of the snaps in 2025.

Atwell tops Cooper Kupp (kind of)

MATTHEW STAFFORD TO TUTU ATWELL FOR THE 31-YARD TOUCHDOWN

pic.twitter.com/avDilkZthC

— NFL Retweet (@NFLRT) October 22, 2023

Cooper Kupp has not played a full season since his prolific triple-crown run in 2021. In 2022 he played just nine games for 812 yards (six touchdowns), 2023 12 games for 737-yards (five touchdowns), and in 2024 12 games for 710 yards (six touchdowns).

Atwell’s finished last season with 562 yards in 17 games and failed to find the end zone once. With a much larger role in 2025 he will look to not only have career highs for himself but also prove why the Rams were willing to move on from Kupp as he finishes the season close to 1000 yards receiving.

My Prediction: Atwell finishes the season with 900 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Tutu Atwell got $10 million for one season, which is a lot for a receiver who hasn’t had a breakout year in four campaigns. However, if Sean McVay invests in a receiver, it’s usually for a good reason and that means that Atwell should set career highs for snaps and targets. Now he just needs to make them count.

What are your predictions for Atwell in 2025? What would he have to do to make his contract worth it? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Les Snead doesn’t want to share draft insights on ‘active duty’

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Chargers

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Les Snead said that maybe someday he’ll appear on a podcast, until then he wants to keep his cards close

Les Snead expressed in a recent press conference that someday he could be more open with the public about his draft day strategies, and the college players who interest him most. Until then, Snead will choose to keep his thoughts within the organization.

Snead was asked if he’s had a chance to take a look at tight end Terrance Ferguson of the Oregon Ducks, and Snead gave a sly response indicating that he most likely has looked at Ferguson, but Snead also played it coy, as he often does, by not saying anything about what he thinks about the prospect.

“I don’t want to get into, you know, names and showing cards. If I wasn’t on active duty and you know, right? Trying to help give the Rams an edge we could sit down and do a podcast together and I’d be a lot more open.”

It’s a great answer because the stories Snead can tell are plenty. He’s been with the Los Angeles Rams since their days in St. Louis. The general manager has seen the Rams go from one of the worst teams in the NFL to one of the best. What is that experience like?

More specifically, what’s it like to take a Greg Robinson at #2 overall, only to see him end up as one of the biggest busts in franchise history, compared to taking Aaron Donald, who ends up being perhaps the best player in franchise history?

As soon as Snead walks away from the game, perhaps fans get a new perspective from him. He’d have the chance to share more of his war stories, and he’d be able to candidly open up about which players in the latest drafts catch his eyes.

When/if that day comes, I would be very curious to hear what he had to say.

Should Rams shoot their shot again at center?

NFL: SEP 18 Falcons at Rams

Drew Dalman could help the Rams be the top rushing team in the NFL

One of the most intriguing free agents this week is Falcons center Drew Dalman. Expected to be the top target at the position in free agency, it’s looking more and more like the 26-year-old out of Stanford will leave Atlanta for the highest bidder and with center being one of the most underrated roles in football, his landing spot could move the needle on next season.

Though the L.A. Rams struck out with Jonah Jackson last year and they did draft Beaux Limmer in the sixth round, should Les Snead kick the tires on Dalman as an option to start in between Steve Avila and Kevin Dotson?

Schultz: C Drew Dalman expected to have "strong" market; Bears viewed as "serious suitor."

— Underdog NFL (@Underdog__NFL) March 9, 2025

Dalman was a fourth round pick in 2021 and he has started 40 games for the Falcons over the last four years. That includes nine games in 2024 with former Rams defensive coordinator and current Atlanta head coach Raheem Morris, which means Dalman has some familiarity with the Sean McVay coaching tree.

If he lands somewhere between fifth place and first place for center contracts, Dalman might get something like a four-year, $56 million contract.

As surprising as it would be for the Rams to target a center one year after they missed so bad on Jackson, as well as getting 14 starts from Limmer, is there a chance that McVay sees a higher ceiling with Dalman than Limmer? And would it be worth it?

Dalman is considered an elite run blocking center and the ground game is McVay’s true bread and butter.

But is it worth it to spread the money so heavily on the offensive line? The team just re-sign A.J. Jackson and is still paying hefty prices for Dotson and Jackson. However, the NFL raised the salary cap again, and will do it again in 2026, so maybe this isn’t the worst use of resources.

Because even if Jackson was a bust, that still means that unless Limmer improves next season that center is still a need.

Why signing Davante Adams makes sense for Rams

NFL: New York Jets at Jacksonville Jaguars

Morgan Tencza-Imagn Images

Cooper Kupp out. Davante Adams in.

Sean McVay heavily recruited former Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets receiver Davante Adams over the weekend before the Los Angeles Rams inked the veteran to a reported two-year, $46M deal. Adams will join Puka Nacua, Tutu Atwell, and Jordan Whittington at receiver in LA.

It’s not abnormal for reported salary numbers to differ from reality, and that’s again the case between Adams and the Rams. While LA could keep him around for 2026 at a $30M cap hit, it is reasonably possible to move on after one season with $12M in dead cap and $18M in savings. That’s good news if you are worried that Adams might go the way of former Rams receiver Allen Robinson.

On the surface it’s somewhat odd that Los Angeles isn’t willing to keep Cooper Kupp around—they’ve been working for weeks to find a trade partner for him—but were happy to fork out the cash for Adams. Let’s dive deeper and take a look at all the reasons this signing makes sense for the Rams:

Availability is the best ability

Kupp has missed a lot of time for the Rams since 2021. Puka Nacua is no stranger to injuries either.

You can’t say the same about Adams. He’s eclipsed over 1,000 yards in each of his last five seasons and was just three yards shy in 2019 of making it seven straight. 2019 was also the last season in which he didn’t play at least 14 games. He was still available for 12 contests that year.

It’s not the say that the Rams are getting an innings eater in Adams; however, if you are going to commit money to an older receiver, it has to feel positive that you are acquiring someone with as good of a track record as any.

Execution in the red zone

It’s no secret the the Rams have struggled in the red zone of late. The return of Tyler Higbee helped in this area towards the end of last season. Still, after re-signing Tutu Atwell this was a fair question for the 2025 group of pass catchers.

Adams caught 14 and eight touchdowns in his two seasons with the Raiders despite poor quarterback play. He caught another eight between his stints with the Raiders and Jets last year. His 6-1, 215 lbs. frame will be a useful addition in the red zone.

Davante Adams has always been an elite route runner and man coverage beater.

Adams was one of 16 qualified WRs with over 2.5 yards per route run against man coverage last season, despite being in 2 separate offenses. https://t.co/vIuHSoqc7t pic.twitter.com/Au6RbXJvXm

— Wyatt Miller (@wymill07) March 9, 2025

In the early McVay years the Rams acquired Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills and his best contributions came at the goal line. Odell Beckham, Jr. played a similar role in the leadup to Super Bowl LVI in 2021. There’s no reason to think that Adams can’t slide into this role and even excel. That’s good news for Matthew Stafford and the Rams.

Low cost to acquire

The Jets sent the Raiders a third-round pick in order to acquire Adams for what became only an 11-game tenure. Because New York had released Adams, he won’t count against the league’s compensatory pick formula. The Rams have used that to their advantage on the eve of free agency in recent years with Leonard Floyd and others, although they don’t have many free agents this offseason that could bring back substantial compensatory capital.

As mentioned earlier, this is effectively a one-year deal for Adams. If he becomes and important contributor in Los Angeles, he could stick around on a $30M cap number in 2026. If not, at least the Rams are trying to put the pedal to the metal for one more year with Matthew Stafford. That’s a much wiser move than trading a third-round pick or committing long-term to a receiver when you might have bigger questions at quarterback in the near future.

Rams lose another defensive lineman in free agency

Michael Hoecht signs $24 million deal with Bills

Shortly after the Rams watched Bobby Brown III sign with the Panthers, L.A. is losing another defensive lineman on Monday after Michael Hoecht signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. While the Panthers have been a major pipeline from the Rams to another team, this signing marks kind of another one as Hoecht goes to Buffalo as a player who will eat up some of the snaps left behind by Von Miller.

The Bills released Miller over the weekend.

Former #Rams DT Michael Hoecht is signing with the #Bills on a three-year deal worth up to $24 million, per The Insiders.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 10, 2025

A former undrafted free agent, Hoecht has overcome the odds to become a player worth $24 million.

It’s strange to call any player of his size an “edge rusher”, but Hoecht has played all over the line from defensive tackle to outside linebacker. When the team needed someone to step up for cheap in 2022, Hoecht posted 4.5 sacks. He then had six sacks in 2023 and added three more in 2024.

Watching him drop into coverage was always a test for your heartbeat, but Hoecht has been a dependable player in the past four years. Now the former Brown (yes, the college) graduate will go to the Buffalo Bills, where he’ll join Taylor Rapp.

Rams Winners & Losers: Who benefits from LA’s free agent spending spree?

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams

Will Davante Adams and Matthew Stafford make fireworks in Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Rams have dominated headlines in the early going of the 2025 offseason.

The drama surrounding Matthew Stafford and a potential trade ended up being a nothingburger. The veteran QB is back in LA for a shot at another Super Bowl.

While Stafford will likely be without star receiver Cooper Kupp this season, he’ll have a new weapon at his disposal in Davante Adams. Adams was recently released by the New York Jets—who acquired him for an 11-game stint in exchange for a third-round pick—and was free to sign elsewhere in advance of Monday’s legal tampering window.

The Rams remained active once the free agency tampering period officially started. They inked a deal with Jimmy Garoppolo to return as Stafford’s understudy for 2025 despite having options to potentially start.

LA then reached an agreement for a reunion with Coleman Shelton. Shelton most recently played for the Chicago Bears and will produce depth and/or competition for second-year center Beaux Limmer.

To finish off Monday, the Rams signed one of the better interior defensive lineman on the market in Poona Ford. Ford spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, but the Rams should also know him well from his days with the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks.

Who on the roster benefits most from LA’s additions? Which players are in jeopardy of ceding playing time to a newcomer? Let’s dive into some offseason winners & losers:

Winners

Matthew Stafford, QB

There’s no bigger winner after the Rams’ latest additions than Stafford.

He’ll have a dynamic weapon in Davante Adams that fits the mold formerly filled by the likes of Sammy Watkins, Odell Beckham, Jr., and Allen Robinson (in theory). Don’t confuse Adams with a replacement for Cooper Kupp—that’s not why he’s here. Sean McVay will isolate Adams on the backside of plays and ask him to win one-on-one matchups. It’s a role they’ve had in mind for several players over the years, but none have been able to succeed long-term.

The Rams also solidified depth along the interior offensive line by bringing back Coleman Shelton. The last memory we have of Stafford on the field was the back-to-back key pressures by Jalen Carter in the NFC playoffs divisional round. If Limmer doesn’t continue his upward trajectory, LA has just purchased an insurance plan that will keep their Super Bowl hopes from being dashed.

Excited to see Davante Adams with Matthew Stafford. If you ask around, Adams still has plenty left. He's also been a player that has always won as a route technician and that trait usually ages well. Stafford will give him chances to make plays too.

The Rams in the NFC West race

The Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are quickly getting worse this offseason.

Seattle’s swap of Geno Smith for Sam Darnold is head-scratching. The Rams’ defensive line have to be licking their chops after how they rushed Darnold in two matchups a year ago, and the Seahawks’ interior offensive line is still a mess. Seattle also traded DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers and moved on from Tyler Lockett.

Things aren’t much better in San Francisco. The 49ers traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, and this is the list of players they’ve lost (so far) in free agency:

  • Aaron Banks, G
  • Charvarius Ward, CB
  • Talanoa Hufanga, DB
  • Dre Greenlaw, MLB
  • Jaylon Moore, OT
  • Elijah Mitchell, RB
  • Josh Dobbs, QB
  • Kyle Jusczyk, FB

The Arizona Cardinals might be the team to keep an eye on as a potential threat to the Rams in the division.

Cobie Durant, CB

Fans seemed to think that the Rams might address corner in free agency or early in the draft. That might still be the case, but as the sun sets on day one of the legal tampering period there don’t appear to be any moves on the horizon.

That’s good news for Cobie Durant, who is in line to benefit from a lack of reinforcements in a contract year. LA could still bring back Ahkello Witherspoon, which makes for a crowded room with Durant and Darious Williams.

Byron Young, EDGE

Michael Hoecht is leaving to play for the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo is replacing one former Ram, Von Miller, with another.

While Byron Young has been solid in his first two NFL seasons, he was somewhat a part-time player last year. That’s OK for EDGE rushers that specialize in getting after the quarterback, but Young’s running mate in Jared Verse has demonstrated he’s an every-down player. Is this an opportunity for Young to prove the same?

Losers

Tutu Atwell, WR

Jordan Whittington, WR

On the surface it is confusing that the Rams would re-sign Tutu Atwell to a one-year, $10M deal and then just days later add Adams. Does that make too many mouths to feed, or is there room to play Puka Nacua, Adams, and Atwell in 11 personnel? That leaves second-year receiver Jordan Whittington as the odd man out, though he seems to deserve a bigger opportunity to 2025.

How is McVay planning to use this group of receivers?

Sorry to all of you Jordan Whittington truthers. He’s simply not Puka 2.0. Puka Nacua and Davante Adams are going to EAT with Stafford under center. https://t.co/Fr2dsdLD4X

— Joshua Cho (@jbchoknows) March 10, 2025

Beaux Limmer, C

Depending on how you want to read the Shelton signing, it’s either a good or bad sign for Limmer. If you think Shelton is back in LA to push Beaux Limmer for a starting job, that might suggest the Rams aren’t fully confident in their second-year center. If the plan is for Shelton to simply mentor Limmer and provide depth at multiple interior positions, then it’s fair to be bullish on the youngster.

Braden Fiske, DT

Maybe this is too harsh, but the Rams’ signing of Poona Ford is somewhat of an indictment on Fiske not being a fully well-rounded player at this stage in his career. Fiske is current a penetrating interior defensive lineman that is best at getting after the quarterback. He has room to improve in the running game, which is why LA paired with Ford.

Either of Kobie Turner or Fiske have to come off the field in order for Ford to come on, and on obvious rushing downs it will likely be Fiske. This doesn’t mean the second-year tackle can’t develop into an equally adept run defender, but for right now that’s not who he is.

Demarcus Robinson to sign with 49ers

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

Demarcus Robinson stays in the NFC West

Demarcus Robinson is reportedly staying in the NFC West, but signing with the Rams’ rival San Francisco 49ers on a 2-year $9.5 million deal. After L.A. made moves to keep Tutu Atwell and then add Davante Adams, it seemed there may not be room for Robinson, but his departure wasn’t a sure thing.

Now, Robinson’s exit is assured as he moves from Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford to Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy.

Robinson has been around the league. Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. He then played with Baltimore Ravens, Rams and now the 49ers. If nothing else, he’s shown that he belongs at the NFL level, and in the right system he can be a solid starter.

Robinson proved himself to be sure handed with Stafford, why can’t he do something similar for Purdy?

Robinson has yet to top 1,000 yards in a season, but maybe he’ll get the chance in the Bay Areas as the 49ers look to find new players to rely on.

For the Rams they’ll be thankful for Robinson’s contributions, but they are also looking to set themselves up so they do not miss him. With Cooper Kupp also likely to be off the roster, there could be more opportunity for someone to step up or for another player to be added.

This free agent linebacker would be an interesting replacement for Rams

Baltimore Ravens v New York Giants

Isaiah Simmons, a former top 10 draft selection, could replace Christian Rozeboom in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Rams now have a hole at off-ball linebacker. Last year’s starter Christian Rozeboom has signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers.

LA still has last season’s standout rookie, undrafted free agent Omar Speights, who is currently in-line for a big role in 2025; however, the Rams will still need a running mate to pair with Speights in base personnel.

One option that would be intriguing is New York Giants off-ball linebacker and converted safety Isaiah Simmons. Simmons is a former 8th overall selection by the Arizona Cardinals. He was traded in his fourth season to the Giants—where he’s spent the last two years—for a measly seventh-round pick.

— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) March 1, 2020

Still, Simmons is athletic as they come at linebacker and for someone with a 6-4. 238 lbs. frame. There’s a fair argument that at this point his NFL career may be a lost cause, but if anyone can maximize untapped potential it just might be the Rams. At the very least Simmons could be a high-level special teams contributor.

In January Big Blue View wrote previewed the Giants’ impending free agent decision on Simmons—asking whether he should stay or go. New York signed Chris Board this week from the New England Patriots, which all but rules out a return for Simmons.

Here’s what our fellow SB Nation blog had to say about the linebacker and his untapped potential:

Reasons to keep Simmons

There are few 6-foot-4, 238-pound human beings who are as athletic as Simmons. He can be utilized in a variety of ways on defense, and we saw during the 2024 season how that athletic ability can be used on special teams.

He can wear a lot of hats for a defense, and his athleticism does allow him to run into big plays on occasion.

Reasons to let him go

Simmons is a tease. He has been in the NFL for five years after being drafted No. 8 overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2020. Coach after coach has looked at Simmons’ athleticism, and tried to figure out ways to use it.

He has played inside linebacker, edge, nickel and wide cornerback, and free safety.

The problem is, he has not done any of those things all that well. Coaches keep moving him around and trying things because it is so hard to walk away from that athleticism.

At some point, though, athleticism isn’t enough. There has to be production, and for Simmons there just hasn’t been enough of that.

Why Simmons could fit in LA

Speights is a stout defender in the run game. If the Rams are going to bring in a veteran as either depth or a potential starter, they’ll need someone who can cover well and work in compliment with Speights’ skillset. Good coverage linebackers, however, don’t grow on trees. It might require a gamble or significant projection from a player that hasn’t already demonstrated they can consistently produce in this facet.

Enter Simmons, who a the very least could use his size and athleticism to man the middle of the defense and disrupt throwing lanes. With the aggressive pass rush we saw last season from the Rams, quarterbacks will start getting the ball out quickly and LA could use someone who can quickly get out to the flat and/or simulate pressures.

The Rams don’t need another run-stopping linebacker. In order to find someone who excels in coverage, they might have to look at non-traditional options. Isaiah Simmons fits that bill if they want to go after him in free agency to replace Christian Rozeboom.
