Dan Wheldon, who moved to the United States from his native England with hopes of winning the Indianapolis 500 and went on to twice prevail at his sport’s most famed race, died Sunday after a massive, fiery wreck at the Las Vegas Indy 300. He was 33. Wheldon, who won the Indy 500 for the second time this May, won 16 times in his IndyCar career and was the series champion in 2005. He was airlifted from the Las Vegas track at 1:19 p.m. local time Sunday and taken to a nearby hospital, becoming the first IndyCar driver to die after an on-track crash since rookie Paul Dana was killed in practice on the morning of race day at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2006.

RIP Dan Wheldon.

What a horrible crash... One of the rare times that the car didn't do it's job in protecting the driver.

That was probably the scariest thing I've seen in my life. RIP.

IRL cars aren't that safe imo. Open cockpit can be just as dangerous as bikes. I am surprised it doesn't happen more then it does, rookie was killed in 06' in these things.

RIP Dan Weldon

Weldon was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and cya. I hope the IRL finds something here that they can use to improve the safety of their cars. 2deaths since 05' isn't great considering its been over 10years(going on 11) since NASCAR has had a death of any sort. They have had very few major injuries occur during their races even, i think maybe 2-4 broken feet in 10years. Just saying the IRL needs to try to implement the stuff NASCAR uses, I know some of it won't work since the IRL is open wheel but I am sure somethings they could use.

Dennis Ritchie also recently died. You may not know who he is, but he created the C computer programming language. You may not know what that is, but it's played a major role with things like the products Steve Jobs came up with.

I remember hearing yesterday that they were going to a safer kind of car in 2012, and I think Wheldon was testing the car behind the scenes or something like that. I don't know what's going to be safer about the new cars, though.

EDIT: Okay, I found it. I was right...

Thirty-four cars were entered in Sunday's race, the last for the current Dallara chassis. In 2012, the series moves to a newer, safer car designed to increase manufacturer competition and individualism. Wheldon was the test driver for that car.
