Pistons vs Clippers preview: Detroit looks to sweep the other LA team for the first time since 2009

The Detroit Pistons stay on the west coast, aiming to bring the brooms out in the Intuit Dome

Coming off their high-flying dunkathon dub over the Utah Jazz, the Detroit Pistons stay on the West Coast to challenge the Los Angeles Clippers. Last night, the Clippers dropped a razor-thin one to the Phoenix Suns. The Clippers blew a 23-point lead. That’s their third loss in a row, and they find themselves in the play-in bracket in a brutal Western Conference.

In the Pistons-Clippers matchup on Feb. 24, Detroit edged out LA, but the Clippers didn’t have Kawhi Leonard and 24 PPG Norman Powell. Both remain out of the lineup. Powell is dealing with a hamstring issue, and Kawhi is taking the night off for rest purposes. These Pistons aren’t an ideal team to rest against when you’re in the thick of a playoff race.

Analysis

Tobias Harris is out tonight against his former team. I’m truly hoping all is well there. Beef Stew is probable. He’ll be needed tonight, as Ivica Zubac hasn’t been a man to take lightly and been a season-long bright spot for the Clippers, as usual.

While James Harden and Norman Powell (who should be the MIP favorite if he qualified) get the majority of the credit for stabilizing the Clippers with Kawhi in and out of the lineup, Zubac has been more than a steady force.

The No. 3 defense starts with him; Zubac is the anchor dragging opposing offenses to no return. Per PBP stats, Zubac has defended the 4th most shots at the cup. Here’s how he ranks compared to his contemporaries

Player Def Rim FGA Def Rim FG%

B.Lopez 427 57%

A.Sengun 393 59.8%

M. Turner 390 58.9%

I.Zubac 385 55%

N.Jokic 368 69%

Other players allow lower percentages at the rim but don’t challenge shots as often as Zu. Beef Stew is one of those guys.

He’s holding scorers to a make-you-double-check 46% on 227 defensive rim FGA. Stew is otherworldly on that end. His defensive brilliance and tenacity should be the national talking point around him. Detroit’s defense as a whole will present many challenges for the undermanned Clippers tonight.

Harden will feel Ausar Thompson’s screen navigation and ball pressure again. Jalen Duren has been “baby Dwight,” snagging shots in the air and igniting fast breaks. Ron Holland will bring his infectious energy right outside LA, and Cade Cunningham’s off-ball defense helps any award case he’s in the running for.

These Pistons strangled Utah Monday to a 98.1 offensive rating. Those same Jazz had a 113.9 offensive rating in their previous five games. Sure, this team is in the Copper Flagg hunt, but the Pistons made them look like they belong in the NCAA March Madness tournament as a Cinderella hopeful 14th seed.

On the Clippers front, Zubac has also been steady on offense, and Harden is still a PnR maestro capable of carving up most coverages. They’re currently sitting in the 9th seed with very similar records to the Warriors/Wolves/Kings/Mavs (get well soon, Kyrie, but Dallas may collapse). Kris Dunn is the Clippers’ version of Ausar. He’s an on-ball pest who looks to fluster Cade tonight.

They need to squeak out games for the rest of the way. Unfortunately for the Clippers, these Detroit Pistons aren’t the little brothers you can smack around on your bad days any longer.

Steph Curry and the Warriors are on a roll

The Detroit Pistons are looking to rebound from a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia 76ers tonight against Golden State, but the Warriors aren’t going to make it easy. Playing with a renewed vigor since the Jimmy Butler trade. Steph Curry is playing his best basketball in a few years and the Warriors have won 10 of their past 12 games. They are also kicking off a seven-game homestand with the game against the Pistons. The vibes for them are immaculate.

The Pistons have also won 10 of their past 12, and hopefully, tonight is a well-played matchup versus two of the rising teams in their respective conferences. While he wasn’t able to match James Harden’s 50-point explosion, Cade Cunningham had a great game against the Sixers. The Pistons star guard scored 37 points and added 10 assists. The Pistons will need every bit of that type of Cade performance to overcome Curry and the Warriors.

Pistons vs. Blazers preview: Beware the Blazers

Portland Trail Blazers v Detroit Pistons

The Portland Trail Blazers are pretty good, actually

It’s well known that the Detroit Pistons flipped its fortune this season after a loss to the Utah Jazz on Dec. 19. Since that time, they have been one of the hottest teams in the league. What might not be as well known is that since Jan. 19, the Blazers have turned their fortunes around. In that span, the Pistons have a 14-8 record while the Blazers’ record stands at 15-8. In the past month and a half, the Blazers and Pistons have the second and third best defenses in the NBA, respectively.

Analysis

The Blazers have steadied their offense, but what is really powering their turnaround is their defensive improvement. The defense is led by versatile wing Toumani Camara, who was recently named defensive player of the month in the Western Conference. Camara is essentially Portland’s version of Ausar Thompson. A bouncy wing who guards the opponent’s best player on a nightly basis. He also has a much more reliable offensive game than Ausar. This season, Camara is averaging 10.7 points per game on 45% shooting and 36% from three.

The good news for the Pistons is that some of Portland’s defensive improvement can be tied to their opponents’ struggles from the 3-point line. Since Jan. 19, teams are shooting just 31% from three against the Blazers. That is a particularly noisy stat, so it could regress at any time. Here is hoping it is courtesy of the Pistons.

A win will also require the Pistons, and particularly Cade Cunningham, to take better care of the basketball. Presuming Camara gets the defensive assignment on Cade, he is deft at creating steals and transition opportunities. Cunningham has struggled with his handle a bit lately. Cunningham is going to need to lock in tonight, take care of the ball and set the tone.

Pistons vs. Blazers final score: Detroit survives scare from Portland

Tobias Harris scores 20 in return to lineup

When a team plays nearly the entire second half in survival mode, it does not typically end with that team surviving. The Pistons, somehow, lived to see the end of a hard-fought game, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 119-112.

The Pistons led by as many as 18 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, but spent every second after that slowly bleeding away that margin. It eventually became a one-possession game with 2:24 remaining.

The Blazers had several opportunities to tie the game but could never get a shot to go down. Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than to be good.

Detroit's biggest issues were a huge free-throw disparity in the second half (what else is new) and carelessness with the ball (what else is new).

Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 28 points, but had more turnovers (8) than assists (5).

When Detroit needed to settle down, they turned to their veteran ball handlers — Tobias Harris and Dennis Schroder.

Harris missed the last two, and if he had missed tonight, the Pistons likely would have lost. He scored 20 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting, added nine rebounds and had zero turnovers.

Schroder came on late in the fourth when it was clear that Cade Cunningham and shooters couldn’t successfully navigate Portland’s aggressive double-teaming of Cunningham.

Schroder (12 points) hit a huge basket late in the fourth to push the lead to five points. Cunningham, Schroder, and Harris were the only three Pistons to score in the final 6:28 of the game.

Jalen Duren added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons. The Blazers were led by Anfernee Simons’ 34 points. Former Piston added 25 points.

Tonight’s win ends a brief two-game road losing streak for the Pistons. Detroit hasn’t lost three in a row since late January.

Detroit now returns home for three straight, including two straight against the Washington Wizards.

Two of the league’s best defenses of the last month square off

Tonight might be a rock fight. The Detroit Pistons, the league’s third-best defense for the past 40 days, faces the Portland Trail Blazers, the league’s second-best defense in that same span. The Pistons will be looking to prevent a three-game losing streak. Detroit has only lost three in a row once since late November. The Blazers have been playing well, but are in the midst of a brutal part of their schedule. They have lost three of the past four, but those losses came at the hands of the Cavaliers (in overtime), the Celtics, and the Thunder. They will be short-handed, however, with Deandre Ayton, Deni Advija, and Robert Williams out of the lineup.

Detroit Pistons v Washington Wizards

Pistons can’t let one get away against the Washington Wizards

The Detroit Pistons can’t afford to take the Washington Wizards lightly as they begin a two-game set against the Eastern Conference’s worst team. Washington has injected some veteran competence in the form of Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart, and the team has responded by delivering nearly one-third of their wins this season in their past seven games. For those not steeped into the Wizards’ season, that equates to a 4-3 record in their past seven games.

The Pistons are no longer fighting for the playoffs; they are fighting for a top-4 seed with two teams above them but within striking distance. That means Detroit cannot afford to drop winnable games, and seeing the Wizards twice in a row is a prime opportunity to pad that win total. Unless Detroit gets in its own way, and it has plenty of experience with that lately. The shooting has been hot and cold, and the turnovers have been endemic. Detroit was able to survive a scare from Portland, but they can’t bank on the Wizards not being able to capitalize on the PIstons’ unforced errors.

Pistons vs Wizards final score: Detroit wins a chippy one against Washington

Washington Wizards v Detroit Pistons

Photo by Chris Schwegler/NBAE via Getty Images

The Pistons win 1 of 2 consecutive games against the Wizards.

The Detroit Pistons had a favorable matchup tonight against the Washington Wizards - Washington was playing their second game of a back-to-back and Detroit were 15-point favorites. You’d have a cashed ticket if you took Detroit’s spread tonight - they outmatched the Wizards throughout the entire game and beat them 123-103. Though my expectations continue to rise as this successful season continues, it’s nice that this team continues to meet them. It’s thoroughly enjoyable watching them grow out of the bottom of the NBA since last season.

The first five minutes of the game was rough - neither team was hitting shots and the game was tied 6-6. JB Bickerstaff called a timeout to fire his guys up, and they responded with a 29-15 run to end the quarter. Detroit took a 35-21 lead at the end of the first after Simone Fontecchio had a tip-dunk at the buzzer. There was a clear rebounding advantage for the Pistons as they outrebounded Washington 22-11, including nine offensive boards.

The first half certainly got chippy - double technical fouls were given to Jalen Duren and Khris Middleton in the first, and Isaiah Stewart and Marcus Smart each received their own in the second. Detroit led by as much as 18 in the quarter as Washington tried to keep it within single-digits, but the Pistons took a 66-49 lead heading into halftime. Cade found Duren for a no-look lob where JD put Khris Middleton on a poster - a nice exclamation point for him after their double technicals earlier:

YOU CAN'T STOP THIS DUO

Dunk of the Game × @wingstop https://t.co/UjnJpPOobB pic.twitter.com/hHxKuMXwid

— Detroit Pistons (@DetroitPistons) March 12, 2025

Duren was very active on the boards, and on both sides of the floor in the half. He had 11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks, including one where he pinned Jordan Poole off-the-glass right before the second quarter buzzer. His play over the last few months has certainly warranted conversations about what an extension for him this summer would look like. Give it to him!

Cade was on triple-double watch at halftime with 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Nobody on Washington could guard him as he was able to get to his spots whenever he wanted, but that shouldn’t be a surprise. Beasley, Harris, and Hardaway Jr had all of Detroit’s seven first-half three-pointers - it’s such a useful piece of roster construction to have veteran players that can shoot.

When you have a 17-point lead at halftime, I think the team needs to come out of the half with the goal of winning the next quarter (puppy point!). A small mindset change to not get lazy, and continue to be competitive on the court regardless of your lead. That wasn’t going to be the case for the third quarter as Washington was able to hang with Detroit, but Malik Beasley hit a patented shimmy three at the buzzer to win the quarter by two. Ausar also gave us this beautiful sequence despite him having an off game:

what a bonkers sequence from ausar thompson

dan favale (@danfavale.bsky.social) 2025-03-12T00:34:33.545Z

Washington clawed back to get the deficit to 11 with five minutes left. The first half’s antics continued late into the game as two Pistons took elbows to the chin - Ausar Thompson caught one from Richaun Holmes that got him a flagrant-two and an ejection, and Marcus Smart got Tim Hardaway Jr on a drive a few possessions later for a flagrant-one.

Detroit made a late push and closed the game out on a 19-10 run to win 123-93. The Pistons outscored the Wizards in all four quarters to win all four puppy points - that’s how you know it was a night of magic!

Detroit improves to 37-29 overall - Cade Cunningham led the way with 27 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists. His lob partner Jalen Duren added 15 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks. These two teams will run it back again on Thursday night.

Pistons ‘boring’? Shaquille O’Neal’s ignorance preventing him from enjoying Detroit’s storybook season

Detroit Pistons v Portland Trail Blazers

Shaq knows nothing about the Pistons but won’t let get in his way of proclaiming them ‘boring’

Of the many nicknames bestowed on all-time great big man Shaquille O’Neal is “The Big Aristotle.” While that might fit his NBA playing days, a better nickname for him as an NBA talking head would be “The Big Ignoramous.”

O’Neal, prolifically and seemingly proudly, has zero idea what he’s talking about on a nightly basis. It’s a disservice to the game, its players, and its fans.

Recently, he was caught on his home broadcast, Inside the NBA, repeatedly thinking that Chauncey Billups was the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. He also recently dismissed the Pistons as a “boring” team while also insisting they were four games under .500 when they were six games over .500.

Here's Shaq congratulating Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups on turning the Detroit Pistons around. pic.twitter.com/roe6qnGaKE

— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) March 12, 2025

It’s not 100% Shaq’s fault. You can’t know anything about a team you never watch play. That is surely where the boring label comes from because if Shaq or his TNT team of enablers ever bothered to pay attention to the Pistons, they’d see them as one of the best stories in the NBA this year and one of the most fun teams to watch on a nightly basis.

But nothing is expected of Shaq, Kenny, or Charles except to yuk it up and get bonus points for knowing less and talking little about the actual game they cover. They have learned all the wrong lessons from what made Inside the NBA a hit.

It was a place to hear smart people talk about the game and be willing to break the format instead of being a rigid and scripted highlights show. Now, though, that freeform presentation has turned into dogma, and they think the people come to the show for them instead of to learn about the game from them.

It’s why the NBA All-Star game can be completely derailed by a tribute to a broadcast team that isn’t actually going anywhere (whether we like it or not).

If Shaq had actually watched any of the Pistons this year, he’d a see one of the great turnaround stories in years. One season removed from a record-breaking losing streak to a team fighting for a fourth seed.

He’d see Cade Cunningham starting to fulfill his potential as a No. 1 overall pick and one of the most promising offensive hubs in the NBA. The Pistons are a team in the top 5 in points off of turnovers, leading the league in percentage of points off the fastbreak points, and are sixth in points in the paint.

They don’t play a boring game. They score in a multitude of ways, including a mix of focus on rim gravity, three-point spacing, and old-school mid-range soul-snatching stepbacks. They are not just spending the entire game walking down the floor in isos or launching an endless barrage of threes.

Dare I say, they play a game Shaq might even respect if he ever bothered to watch.

Detroit ranks just 21st in field goal frequency but 13th in conversions. They take and make good shots, especially if you consider the sizeable offensive talent gap they are playing with compared to teams with multiple star players.

The fact that the Pistons can go from bottom five in both offense and defense to a top-10 offense and top-3 defense since Dec. 21 is an amazing story. If Shaq had bothered to pay attention.

He could be enjoying Isaiah Stewart’s old-school defense, Jalen Duren’s ability to convert lobs from any angle, or Malik Beasley having a Steph Curry-like season from behind the 3-point line.

Perhaps if Mr. O’Neal bothered to actually watch some extra basketball in his free time, he’d see that there is no more exciting play in the NBA than Ausar Thompson defense that leads to Pistons offense. For example:

what a sequence from ausar man… a block to a nice assist pic.twitter.com/ESEqPc6wJY

— bianchi (@bianchixtm) March 12, 2025

And another:

#Pistons firing on all cylinders to start vs. the Celtics with a 29-20 lead.

Detroit closed out the 1st Qtr on an 11-0 run. Malik Beasley & Cade Cunningham each have 8 points.

And defensively, Ausar Thompson has FOUR steals already.pic.twitter.com/Hb4QmC5sGr

— Hobie Artigue (@HeyItsMeHobie) February 27, 2025

But Shaq doesn’t know any of this because he doesn’t want to know any of this. He’d rather fall on something he heard from someone else years ago that he vaguely recalls but gets all the facts wrong when he tries to pass it off as his own analysis.

These aren’t the Detroit Pistons of the past 15 years, Shaq. Maybe it’s time you brush up on one of the league’s best stories and most entertaining watches this season.

Washington Wizards v Detroit Pistons

Let’s play two (against the Wizards)!

The Detroit Pistons are a better team than the Washington Wizards. That’s an objective truth of the 2024-25 NBA season. That doesn’t mean the Pistons can’t lose to the Wizards. As the two teams face off for the second game in a row, you don’t have to reach back too far (last game) when the Pistons almost blew a big lead by letting the Wizards right back into the game, thanks to a messy second half.

However, the most interesting thing as these two teams play again today is not who will win or who will lose, it is whether these two teams are going to get into a physical altercation that leads to an ejection. The last game got quite chippy in a number of spots. There were five technicals between the two teams and Wizards big man Richaun Holmes was ejected for a pretty vicious elbow to Ausar Thompson’s jaw.

Lord knows that players like Isaiah Stewart and Ron Holland aren’t interested in backing down from anything or anyone. Hopefully, for everyone (including Stewart’s growing technical count), this is a nice, clean game that will lead to a Pistons victory.

Pistons vs. Wizards final score: Detroit lacks urgency, execution in loss to Washington

Washington Wizards v Detroit Pistons

Cade Cunningham’s 38 points not enough for the Pistons

A wise man once said, “You don’t want to be that team.” Well, the Detroit Pistons were that team in a 129-125 loss to the visiting Washington Wizards.

Cade Cunningham scored 38 points, including a career 20-of-21 night from the free-throw line. It wasn’t enough for a Pistons team who played, slow, sluggish, and unfocused for the majority of the game.

The offense was slow, too many shots were forced, the help defense was late, and they played too far off of Washington’s shooters. The Wizards made 20 3-pointers and shot 44% from deep to offset Cunningham’s game, and it was enough to steal a win in Detroit.

The broadcast team of George Blaha and Greg Kelser were effusive in their praise of a Wizards team who came to play. I hate to disagree with the iconic duo, but this night was more about Detroit not playing any semblance of defense and too few Pistons presenting any sense of offensive danger.

It was great to finally see the Pistons budding superstar get superstar calls, but that really papered over a lot of issues for the Pistons on both ends.

Sometimes a superstar can will his team to wins on off nights, even on nights when that same star goes 0-of-7 from deep. Tonight, though, the miscues were too much to overcome.

The Pistons went down as many as 13 in the fourth quarter but stormed back behind Cunningham and Jalen Duren (18 points, 14 rebounds). By the end of the quarter, the Pistons had a five-point lead, and the Little Caesars Arena crowd finally came alive.

The Wizards never stopped competing though, and tied it by the midway point of the frame. The teams traded baskets back and forth.

Detroit took its final lead 125-124 on a Duren tip-in with 1:05 remaining, but gave up a wide open Alex Sarr (19 points) dunk on the ensuing possession.

Cunningham drove into the lane on the next possession but Alex Sarr blocked his attempted layup out of bounds. Originally it was ruled Detroit’s ball, but a coach’s challenge changed the call as it was determined Sarr blocked it into Cade’s arm, which then forced the ball out of bounds.

The Pistons were able to force a miss with 14 seconds remaining but Khris Middleton knocked the ball out of Cunningham’s hands and out of bounds.

Washington’s Bub Carrington sank the needed free throws to put the game away.

If you’re a glass half full person, you’d note that it’s been a while since the Pistons really showed out from deep (they shot 30% tonight), and if they can get their shooters shooting again, they will keep winning. Or you could say it’s a good reality check before a huge test against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday.

If you’re a glass half empty person, you’d note the Pistons dropped a game they couldn’t afford to lose against the worst team in the Eastern Conference just as they are righting for home court advantage in the playoffs.

You decide where you sit.

Pistons vs. Wizards preview: Another home game against lowly Wizards

NBA: Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons

David Reginek-Imagn Images

The Pistons have a chance to improve their playoff standings with another game against the NBA’s worst team.

We have reached the point of the season where the previous versions of the Pistons would be resting players with “injuries” to try to improve their standing in the lottery. Now, every game matters as the Pistons try to catch the Pacers and/or Bucks for the 4th or 5th seed in the East. What a difference a year makes.

In the case of tonight’s game, a Pistons win combined with a Bucks loss will put them into sole possession of 4th in the East since the Pacers do not play. Luckily for the Pistons, they face a Wizards team that they just beat by 20 points on Tuesday.

The Wizards are in a similar boat to the Pistons of last year. They do not have quite the losing streak the Pistons had, but are a young team with some misfit veterans that leads to some pretty ugly basketball night-to-night. I think the Wizards are a bit better equipped to keep themselves in games than last year’s Pistons team, but this game shouldn’t be too tough for the Pistons to win as long as they play with the same effort they displayed on Tuesday.

Analysis

Tuesday’s game got a bit chippy, as there were a couple of dust ups along with a couple of elbows by the Wizards that connected with a Pistons player’s face. Luckily, both teams came out unscathed, but for a mid-March game involving two teams heading in opposite directions, it was probably a bit more physical than you would like.

Luckily, we get to do it all again with no game in between for either team to cool off.

There isn’t much more to analyze about this game than what was said on Tuesday as it is the same injury report and the same players playing.

But, for the Pistons the ball is in their court. Just like a few weeks ago when the Pistons played the Bulls back-to-back and blew them out in the first game, they did not lay down and die in the 2nd game. It wasn’t exactly a close game, but the Bulls played hard and kept things close through the first half. I would expect the same out of the Wizards.

Their roster is a bit of a land of misfit toys, but they have some solid veterans like Marcus Smart, Khris Middleton, and Rachaun Holmes along with young guys that play hard. It is a similar build to the Pistons, the Pistons have just been at this for a couple years more than the Wizards.

The Wizards also have Jordan Poole, who is more than capable of taking over a game with his shot making. He is also susceptible to shooting a team out of a game, but the Pistons will need to be careful.

At the end of the day, these are the games you must win if you are a legitimate playoff team. The Pistons don’t exactly have anybody hot on their trail, but the Atlanta Hawks have some easy games coming up and are currently 5 back of the Pistons. Losing to a team like the Wizards before you face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday could be the opportunity a team like Atlanta needs to try and catch you in the standings.

Losing to the Wizards tonight makes Saturday’s game against the Thunder more of a must-win, which is not a position you want to be putting yourself in.

Just take care of business, get out of this game healthy, and move on to Oklahoma City.

Put some respect on Tobias Harris’ name

NBA: Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

David Reginek-Imagn Images

Cade is the Pistons’ MVP, but Tobias has proven to be the most indispensable player on the roster

When the Detroit Pistons signed Tobias Harris in July, it was a move panned by many.

It was too much money. Too long of a contract. Too mid of a player.

It was a boring addition because we’ve been down the road with Tobias in Detroit.

But it was an extremely important move.

First, it represents a rare instance of a starting-level player truly wanting to be in Detroit — especially after the hellish 2023-24 season. Sure, his wife Jasmine played a part in their return home as a native, but Harris was a good player last time around and, if not for the Blake Griffin trade that sent him to LA, he might have continued to be that in Detroit.

Believe it or not, we’re seven years between Harris eras in Detroit and, once again, he’s serving as a valuable piece on a Pistons team eyeing playoff success.

Cade Cunningham is obviously the most valuable player on this team, but I think Tobias is the most irreplaceable. When you look at the Pistons’ recent wins over the Portland Trailblazers and Washington Wizards, Harris’ impact was apparent.

He’s proven to be one of their most reliable late-game players. That little fadeaway jumper he loves has been automatic and MUCH needed as late leads have shrunk with the Pistons desperate for clutch-time offense outside of Cade:

The Pistons’ biggest issue with closing out games and holding onto leads is that once Cade starts getting blitzed and trapped at half court, they lack reliable shotmakers.

Malik Beasley is either lighting the arena on fire or missing everything, Ausar Thompson can create but not finish and Jalen Duren, despite his improvements, still needs a helping hand getting buckets against a defense that’s keying in on him.

It left a big opportunity for Tobias, who has more than taken advantage.

What’s really impressive is how simpatico of a fit Harris has been with the roster. Looking at 2-man lineup data from NBA.com, the following players have had their best +/- numbers while sharing the floor with Harris:

  • Dennis Schroder +4.0
  • Cade Cunningham +3.3
  • Malik Beasley +3.2
  • Ausar Thompson +2.3
  • Jalen Duren +2.3
  • Simone Fontecchio +1.7

I mean it when I say this: Tobias might be the perfect role fit for this team at this time.

This roster was built at its core by Troy Weaver, but his lack of pro personnel acumen is why it remained in the gutter for so long. Trajan Langdon has made perfect choice after perfect choice when it comes to fitting the right veteran pieces into the right roles.

However, I’m not sure even he thought Harris would fit in quite like this.

Early in the season, when shots weren’t falling and the Pistons were trying to figure out who they were, belief in Harris’ leadership and chemistry was all a truther really had to hang their hat on. He was bad.

But, after opening the season with four rough games — shooting 34% from the field (18% from 3) to go with 10 points and 7 rebounds — Harris finally found his stride against his former team. He went into Philadelphia, was booed mercilessly, and walked out of the arena with 18 points, 14 rebounds and, most importantly, the Pistons’ first win of the season.

It’s a small moment in the big picture of things, but a veteran showing the mental toughness to put up that game in an emotional environment like that is huge. This team would have WITHERED in that setting a year ago.

They just didn’t know how to handle it. Tobias Harris was brought here to teach these kids how to win. Now that they’re doing that, he’s helping them push the limits of how far this coming out party can go in the playoffs.

Pistons face tough test as they face the best team in the West

The Detroit Pistons are looking to rebound after an embarrassing loss to the Washington Wizards on Thursday. As the Pistons work to secure a top-4 seed in the Eastern Conference, they will face one of their toughest tests of the season in the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder. While Detroit is likely to be locked in after letting a winnable and much-needed game slip away, the Pistons might hope the Thunder are in a bit of a hangover phase.

The 54-win Thunder locked in a playoff spot with and secured a win over another elite team in the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. There is a chance they might be looking to take a breath after such a hard-fought win. The Pistons need to make them pay for that by playing aggressive, smart, and fast early.

Two future faces of the league go head to head in an important game in the middle of March

After surrendering 19 “open” 3s to the Washington Wizards Thursday night, The Detroit Pistons can get a bounce-back win over MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

SGA’s value will be tested tonight without OKC’s second and third options. Detroit’s defense was uncharacteristically lifeless Thursday night. Detroit has been competing with top offenses since the turn of the calendar—they need another master class tonight.

Analysis

Individual matchups are just a piece of the puzzle to this beautiful team game we love, and we’re in for a treat tonight.

The best two players who wear #2 this year will go at it. Ausar Thompson will take the SGA assignment, while the brute Lu Dort will take Cade Cunningham. Both defenders pose challenges to these All-NBAers, but great players make it happen against the best. If they guard each other in the clutch, that’d be even more fun.

The Pistons’ defense has been near the best. They’ve been No. 2 since January 1, but the Thunder are No. 1 in that span. In fact, OKC is No. 1 for the entirety of this year. They’ve gotten it done with whoever laces up.

Chet Holmgren is resting tonight. He’s OKC’s top backline defender, and opponents shoot 40 percent with him at the basket. He hasn’t always been available this year. In the 39 straight games Holmgren missed with a pelvic injury, the Thunder remained the top defense, with 6-foot-6 Jalen Williams manning the backline along with Isaiah Hartenstein.

Jdub is out tonight as he nurtures his hip, but his versatile fly-around, active-hands style of defense is invaluable for this Thunder squad. Hartenstein mitigated Chet’s absence when he debuted. Rim-protecting and think-ahead passing are his game.

Detroit has to get back to their game after Thursday’s defeat. They gave up a ton of open looks, but is that a strategy they are looking to use by design Saturday night? Maybe there’s a lot of Thompson on SGA, and Detroit doubles off so so shooters like Dort and Kenrich Williams.

Yeah, Dort is making teams pay for this strategy now, but there’s a reason teams keep doing it and will certainly do it in the playoffs.

Aaron Wiggins is questionable with an illness, but he’s not a shooter you can confidently help off. The same goes for Isaiah Joe. It’ll mainly be on Thompson to show why he’s a premier defender and stick SGA. He’ll need to stay out of foul trouble, and that’s a tall ask against Shai.

Regardless of your position on the foul-bating conversation, it’s inarguable that putting opponents’ lockdown defenders in foul trouble is a positive thing (you’re going to shoot a lot of FTs when you lead the league in drives for three straight years).

Hopefully, Cade can do that to Dort. He’s getting close to a superstar whistle as of late (92% on 7.5 FTA since Feb 3rd), and that whistle culminated in 21 FT attempts last game. Drawing fouls helps his efficiency, and seeing the ball through the hoop helps shotmaking overall. Deuce needs to knock down some triples, but he’s a big game player and will play his best against one of the league’s best players.

New Orleans Pelicans v Detroit Pistons

Photo by Brian Sevald/NBAE via Getty Images

The New Orleans Pelicans are undergoing a season from hell, and if Zion Williamson misses another game, it won’t get any easier as they face a Detroit Pistons team looking for some retribution after an extremely tough loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That game saw the ejection of Cade Cunningham, five technical fouls, a masterclass from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and a righteously angry JB Bickerstaff whose 90-second diatribe against the refs will earn him an as yet unspecified fine from the league.

The Pelicans have lost six of seven, mostly to good teams, but Saturday’s road loss to the also-depleted San Antonio Spurs has to sting extra hard. These team will also play March 23 in Detroit, so it will be interesting to see how this game goes and what might carry over into that next matchup.

Pistons vs. Pelicans final score: Pistons pummel Pelicans by 46

Detroit relies on defense, not luck for big St. Patty’s Day win

The Detroit Pistons dominated the New Orleans Pelicans 127-81 behind some suffocating defense that allowed them to open up the offense and coast to a much-needed win.

The Pistons were led by a Big Easy performance from Cade Cunningham, who didn’t seem to break a sweat while notching 24 points, eight assists and four rebounds.

Instead of relying on the luck of the Irish, the Pistons relied on the best game of the season from Italian sharpshooter Simone Fontecchio. Coming off offseason foot surgery, Fontecchio has struggled this season, but he was on fire tonight.

Fontecchio had marinara in his veins and played with a big pair of arancinis, taking the ball strong to the rim and finishing in traffic while also knocking down all five of his three-point attempts. He finished with a season-high 24 points on 9-of-10 shooting.

If Simone has truly turned the corner, it could be a huge development for the Pistons, who don’t really have a source of offense from the power forward position behind Tobias Harris unless Fontecchio is hitting shots.

Detroit gave up just 10 made field goals to New Orleans in the first half, tying an NBA low for the season. During that dominant first half, they held every Pelican in check, including star Zion Williamson, building a 31-point lead.

New Orleans was able to get Zion going and chip away at the lead, but it was too much to overcome. Williamson finished with an inconsequential 30 points to lead all scorers. But his scoring burst couldn’t make it a real game, and eventually, the Pistons were able to keep the lead around a comfortable 30-point range. The reserves really dominated in garbage time and stretched the lead out to 46.

The Pistons finished with 10 steals, seven blocks, and scored 20 points off of the Pelicans’ turnovers. They dominated the boards, the fast break, and the game. It was a great response after a couple of frustrating losses.

Detroit faces the Pelicans again this Sunday at Little Caesars Arena. They must remember not to treat the Pelicans like they did the Wizards, winning easily in one game and then letting a win slip away in the next matchup.

Pistons vs Pelicans preview: Must-win game on the road

NBA: New Orleans Pelicans at Detroit Pistons

Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

We have reached the stretch run where every game is important and there are no excuses.

A couple weeks ago, things were fun, the Pistons were winning pretty much every night, and in the midst of all of that they built a pretty sizable lead over the 7th and 8th seeds to keep them away from the Play-In Tournament.

As the winning continued, it looked like they might even have a shot at the 4th seed and homecourt advantage in the playoffs. The Pistons still have a 5 game lead over the 7th seeded Atlanta Hawks and are only a couple games back of the Bucks/Pacers for 4th, but the vibes are not as good as they were a few weeks ago.

As the Pistons head to New Orleans to face a Pelicans team that is probably a little better than their record, they have lost four of their last six games and face their most winnable stretch of games remaining on their schedule. The teams below the Pistons have easier schedules remaining, so this 3-game road trip against the Pelicans, Heat, and Mavericks is pretty much a must-win road trip. The Pistons might benefit a bit with some of the better teams they play in late-March and April resting players as they gear up for the playoffs, but April’s schedule in particular is pretty brutal on paper as things currently stand.

The Pistons started their rise in the standings with a very strong Western Conference road trip, so let’s get things back on track on another road trip.

Analysis

As I mentioned above, the Pelicans are probably better than their 18-50 record. They have dealt with a lot of injuries this season, including missing Zion Williamson for most of the season. They are at the point in the season where they don’t have much to play for, so players will probably be popping up with “injuries” as we reach the final few weeks of the season.

That does not guarantee that players like Zion will not play tonight, but it is a possibility given the current state of the team. But, even if the Pelicans do hold out a few players it does not ensure a win for the Pistons since they just lost to the lowly Wizards a few nights ago. Any team can win any night and you are more vulnerable when things have already not been going great the last couple weeks.

The Pistons only have 5 games remaining against teams currently under .500, including these Pelicans twice this week, so this game looms large as an important one for playoff positioning purposes. As I went over above, the Pistons are not really in danger of losing their spot on the 6th seed anytime soon, but with so few games left where they are probably favored, it is important to get out to a strong start and not let the Pelicans have a chance in this one.

If Zion Williamson plays, this game is going to be a tough game. He has missed a lot of time this season with injury, but since returning he has been phenomenal, including his first triple-double last week. Zion Williamson’s skill has never been the question, it has always been his health. I think Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren have the size and strength to slow him down a bit, but his athleticism will make things tough on them. Williamson is currently listed as a game time decision, so we will see what happens.

One player who will play and is in the midst of a breakout season is Trey Murphy III. He comes into this game averaging career-highs across the board and has been one of the lone bright spots for the Pelicans this year. He has the ability to get hot from 3 and beat you from beyond the arc, but he can also put the ball on the floor and give you problems.

It is difficult to analyze this game fully because I am unsure who all will be playing for the Pelicans, they currently have 3 of their regular starters (Kelly Olynyk, Zion Williamson, and Yves Missi) all listed as Game Time Decisions. They are also already without Herb Jones and DeJounte Murray for the rest of the season and who knows who else could randomly get held out.

The one thing I can say for certain is how important this game is for the Pistons. Cade Cunningham has not been great shooting the ball the last couple games and was thrown out against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 3rd quarter on Saturday. You can argue whether what he did warranted him getting thrown out, but he was in the midst of one of his worst games of the season before that. Cade has missed 11 threes in a row over his last two games.

This is a good matchup for him to get back on track with a backcourt of CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy III, but the Pelicans also have the always pesky Jose Alvarado coming off the bench, who could give Cade some issues with ball security. But, the main thing for Cade is to just get back on track shooting, as he showed against the Wizards despite the loss, his ability to attack the basket and score inside has not been as bad as his outside shooting.

The Pistons should be able to win this game regardless of who is playing, but if the Pelicans trot out a roster with all of their regular players, this is going to be a hard-fought game.
