Patriots players react to Kyle Dugger, Keion White trades

gettyimages-2170419739.jpg

Christian Gonzalez and Keion White arrived in New England as part of the same draft class, joining the Patriots as their first and second picks in 2023. But while both looked like potential long-term cornerstones for the organization up until last season, their paths started to diverge in 2025.

Despite dealing with a nagging hamstring injury over the summer, Gonzalez remained the Patriots’ undisputed No. 1 cornerback. White, on the other hand, was asked to adapt to a different role in the team’s new defensive scheme and eventually lost his starting position to offseason signing K’Lavon Chaisson. On Tuesday, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers as part of a late-round draft pick exchange.

White was not the only former starter to be let go. Kyle Dugger, the longest-tenured Patriot and a former team captain, was also shipped away; he was sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a similarly-structured move.

Neither departure came as too big a shock to those inside the Patriots locker room, but they were still felt particularly by players such as Gonzalez.

“I mean, it hurt,” the All-Pro cornerback said on Wednesday. “Those are two of two of my closest friends I talk to a lot. But it’s a business at the end of the day. Happy for them, they get to go get a new fresh start. Here, we’re focused on the Falcons and getting ready for them.”

Gonzalez’s statement summed up the the feelings inside Gillette Stadium.

Sad to see Dugger and White go, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Trust in the team’s decision makers and on to the next game.

“I try not to pay too much attention. I got to farm my own land,” added wide receiver Stefon Diggs. “Obviously, guys that you build a relationship as players, hate to see them go. But you wish them the best.”

For the Patriots under Mike Vrabel, moves like Tuesday’s are nothing out of the ordinary. Over the offseason, the team already parted ways with several longtime cornerstones either through release (David Andrews, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Joe Cardona, Jabrill Peppers) or by opting against re-signing them (Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr.).

Dugger is the latest member of that club, with the less experienced White joining him on the outs after also falling out of favor with the new coaching staff. And thus, the turnover at One Patriot Place continues.

For quarterback Drake Maye, it’s all about believing in the process.

“I think just trusting the big picture and what they’re doing in the front office, the coaching staff,” he explained.

“As a leader on this team, trust who they have in that locker room and create a bond with those guys. I think those guys are seeing and starting to gel together. So, you hate to see guys that you get to know leave, but at the same time, whoever’s in the locker room ready to go on Sundays is who we’re worried about.”

This coming Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, that group is going to look different. While neither Dugger nor White had kept their former starting roles, both were valuable rotational pieces who had played 39% and 26% of defensive snaps, respectively, over the first eight weeks of the season.

How the Patriots will replace them remains to be seen. Belief that Vrabel and company will push the right buttons — as they have in the past or else the team would not be 6-2 — is wide-spread in the locker room, though, as Stefon Diggs pointed out.

“We all trust that our coaches and everybody in charge is going to do everything in the best interest of the team.”

Patriots vs. Falcons Thursday injury report: Rhamondre Stevenson misses second practice

gettyimages-2243438801.jpg

The New England Patriots continued preparations for the Atlanta Falcons without Rhamondre Stevenson.

The starting running back remained a non-participant on Thursday. He has now been sidelined for back-to-back practices due to a toe injury. But elsewhere on offense, veteran right tackle Morgan Moses returned after resting to begin the week.

Here’s the second injury report leading up to Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

Patriots

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe)

Falcons

  • No players listed

Stevenson stands with 99 touches, 448 yards and three touchdowns from scrimmage this fall. The backfield starter played a season-high 50 offensive snaps last weekend. Since then, however, the Patriots have promoted Terrell Jennings to the 53-man roster and signed fellow rushers Jonathan Ward, Rushawn Baker and D’Ernest Johnson to the practice squad.

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • No players listed

Falcons

  • QB Michael Penix (knee)
  • RB Tyler Allgeier (knee)
  • WR Drake London (hip)
  • WR Casey Washington (back)
  • TE Kyle Pitts (ankle)
  • OT Jake Matthews (ankle)
  • DE Zach Harrison (knee)
  • LB Jalon Walker (groin)
  • LB Leonard Floyd (hamstring)
  • CB Billy Bowman Jr. (hamstring)
  • CB Natrone Brooks (shoulder)
  • S Jessie Bates III (knee)

A trio of Falcons joined the limited participants after sitting out Wednesday’s practice. A dozen altogether went in that capacity in Flowery Branch, including the team’s No. 1 quarterback and No. 1 wide receiver, who both recently landed among the inactives. But there would be no partial listings in Foxborough. Instead, there would be a handful of veterans upgraded to full-go.

FULL PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • WR Stefon Diggs (ankle)
  • OT Morgan Moses (not injury related — rest)
  • C Garrett Bradbury (toe)
  • DT Christian Barmore (not injury related — other)
  • DT Khyiris Tonga (knee)

Falcons

  • WR Darnell Mooney (hamstring)
  • OT Storm Norton (foot — IR return)

Diggs, Bradbury, Barmore and Tonga all got the green light. The wide receiver’s ankle injury and the center’s toe injury marked the new additions to the injury report at the start of the week. The latter March signing has played every offensive snap since the September opener, while the former has caught a team-high 42 passes for 470 yards and just scored his first touchdown as a Patriot. And for the Falcons, one full participant on Wednesday became two full participants on Thursday.

Patriots vs. Falcons Friday injury report: Rhamondre Stevenson ruled out for Week 9

gettyimages-2241868496.jpg

The New England Patriots will be down Rhamondre Stevenson against the Atlanta Falcons.

The starting running back remained a non-participant for three consecutive practices due to a toe injury. He has since been ruled out, as Mike Vrabel announced during his final press conference of the week.

“Everybody else doesn’t have a designation,” the head coach said.

Here’s the rest of the game statuses for Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.

OUT

Patriots

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe)

Falcons

  • WR Casey Washington (back)
  • OT Storm Norton (foot — IR return)
  • DE Zach Harrison (knee)
  • CB Billy Bowman Jr. (hamstring)

Stevenson has started every game for the 6-2 Patriots. He stands with 99 touches, 448 yards and three touchdowns from scrimmage on the fall. But since playing a season-high 50 offensive snaps, the running back room has added seats and his return date “certainly won’t be this week.”

The organization recently promoted Terrell Jennings to the 53-man roster and signed fellow backs Jonathan Ward, Rushawn Baker and D’Ernest Johnson to the practice squad following workouts. An expanded role could also be on deck for No. 38 overall pick TreVeyon Henderson, who lost a fumble yet rushed for a team-high 75 yards on 10 carries last weekend.

“We try to figure who’s ready to go at the end of the week,” Vrabel added of the backfield depth, “and we’ll make that decision tomorrow. Just like we tell everybody when they get here on Wednesday — whoever’s here on the active or the practice squad — prepare as a starter. I feel like those guys have done that, try to do that, and continue to try to get everybody ready for the football game and see where we’re at from a numbers standpoint.”

QUESTIONABLE

Patriots

  • No players listed

Falcons

  • LB Jalon Walker (groin)
  • LB Leonard Floyd (hamstring)
  • S Jessie Bates III (knee)

With no Patriots listed as questionable to begin November, three veterans managing ailments will all go without game designations. All three ramped up from limited on Wednesday to full participation on Thursday and Friday.

That group includes wide receiver Stefon Diggs and center Garrett Bradbury on the offensive side despite ankle and toe injuries, respectively. The latter has played 100 percent of the downs for the interior line since the start of September, while the former has caught one touchdown and a team-high 42 passes for 470 yards. And on the defensive side of the ball, nose tackle Khyiris Tonga is also good to go after residing on the injury report for back-to-back weeks with a knee issue.

As for the Falcons, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and wide receiver Drake London are set to return to the starting lineup following one-game absences. Both were among the full-go players to close out preparations in Flowery Branch.

Patriots elevate running back D’Ernest Johnson from practice squad on eve of Week 9

gettyimages-2242095564.jpg

The New England Patriots will host the Atlanta Falcons with a midweek addition in the backfield.

The organization elevated veteran running back D’Ernest Johnson from the practice squad on the eve of Sunday’s game at Gillette Stadium.

Johnson, 29, will join rookie TreVeyon Henderson and recent promotion Terrell Jennings on the active depth chart. His call-up comes 24 hours after starter Rhamondre Stevenson was ruled out on the final injury report due to a toe issue.

After being released from the practice squad of the Arizona Cardinals, Johnson made his way to Foxborough in the same capacity on Wednesday. Standing 96 games into his NFL run, the South Florida product has totaled 989 yards through 215 carries and 465 yards through 53 catches. His career includes three touchdowns as well as three starts.

A year after going undrafted, Johnson set out with the Orlando Apollos in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound rusher entered the NFL ranks later that spring with the Cleveland Browns. He went on to be named FedEx Ground Player of the Week in 2021 after amassing 146 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

Stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens followed before Johnson served as an elevation earlier this fall in the NFC West. Adding experience as a kickoff returner and coverage player, he has logged 892 snaps on offense and 931 snaps on special teams during his time in the league.

“I think that, again, different categories of players that are on the practice squad,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said of Johnson on Friday. “Young guys that you’re taking a look at maybe for future development, you see how they fit into what you do. Then, other guys that have played in this league and can get ready in a shorter amount of time.”

Fellow running backs Jonathan Ward and Rushawn Baker also signed to the practice squad ahead of the Falcons matchup.

Sunday’s kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.

Patriots vs. Falcons: Drake Maye finds DeMario Douglas to take early 7-0 lead

gettyimages-2243619342.jpg

The New England Patriots are set to put their five-game winning streak on the line in a Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9.

In a head-to-head showcase between 2024 first-round quarterbacks, Drake Maye and Michael Penix Jr. are trending in opposite directions to start their sophomore season. As Maye finds himself in the middle of the MVP race, Penix Jr, who missed last week with a knee injury but is set to start on Sunday, currently leads a Falcons offense that ranks 28th in football averaging 17.1 points per game.

Follow along live from Gillette Stadium down below throughout Sunday’s matchup.

Live score: Patriots 7 : 0 Falcons

Sunday, Nov. 2, 1 p.m. ET | Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA | Broadcast information | Inactives | Game day roster

First Quarter

The Patriots won the toss and deferred, putting a defense on the field that has allowed points on six of opponents first eight drives this season. New England got the fast start they were looking for behind a second-down sack by K’Lavon Chaisson to help force an opening three-and-out.

Three straight runs out of the gate gave the Patriots offense their first first-down of the afternoon before a check-down to TreVeyon Henderson and scramble by Maye moved the unit over midfield. Another dump off to Henderson saw the back pick up 19 yards to set up shop inside the red zone. New England needed just two plays to find the end zone, as Maye hit DeMario Douglas on a wheel route out of the backfield for 16 yards. [Patriots 7 : 0 Falcons]

The Falcons picked up their first first-down of the game as Penix connected with Drake London for 11 yards. A run stuff then helped New England set up a third-and-9, where Penix’s ball downfield to Bijan Robinson fell incomplete.

Starting their next drive backed up inside their own 10-yard line, two touches to Henderson managed just four yards where a third-down pass downfield fell incomplete on an apparent miscommunication.

AFC playoff picture: Patriots inch closer to No. 1 seed

gettyimages-2244661620.jpg

Update (11/2): Patriots inch closer to No. 1 seed in the AFC after beating Falcons

After the early window of games on Sunday, the New England Patriots found themselves down a spot in the AFC playoff picture. An inferior strength of victory tiebreaker meant that they lost the No. 2 seed to the Denver Broncos.

That change was only a temporary one, though. With the Buffalo Bills beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the afternoon window, the Patriots’ SOV tiebreaker received a boost again. Moving from .328 to .333 it now barely edges out the Broncos’ .331 again.

With only the Sunday and Monday night games missing, the updated AFC playoff picture therefore now looks as follows:

  1. Indianapolis Colts (7-2)
  2. New England Patriots (7-2)
  3. Denver Broncos (7-2)
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3)
  5. Buffalo Bills (6-2)
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (6-3)
  7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3)

On the bubble: 8. Kansas City Chiefs (5-4), 9. Houston Texans (3-5), 10. Baltimore Ravens (3-5)

Not technically eliminated but let’s be real here: 11. Cincinnati Bengals (3-6)
, 12. Las Vegas Raiders (2-6), 13. Cleveland Browns (2-6), 14. Miami Dolphins (2-7), 15. New York Jets (1-7), 16. Tennessee Titans (1-8)

Outside of the Patriots and Broncos switching places again, the biggest change compared to the early window is the Chiefs falling out of the top seven again. Thanks to their loss and the Jaguars holding off the Raiders’ comeback bid in overtime, the reigning conference champions are now on the outside looking in again.

Original story (11/2): Patriots drop a spot in AFC playoff picture despite beating Falcons

Even though there is plenty of room for improvement, the New England Patriots kept their win streak alive against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9. Their 24-23 victory was their sixth in a row and improved their overall record on the year to 7-2 — tied with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos for best in the AFC.

And yet, they fell down a spot in the playoff picture from the second to the third seed. Why? Because Denver managed to defeat the Houston Texans 18-15 to draw even with New England and its 4-2 conference record. The difference in the Broncos’ favor at the moment is the strength of victory tiebreaker, with their .331 narrowly beating the Patriots’ .328.

The full AFC playoff picture after the early window of games on Sunday looks as follows:

  1. Indianapolis Colts (7-2)
  2. Denver Broncos (7-2)
  3. New England Patriots (7-2)
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3)
  5. Buffalo Bills (5-2)
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (6-3)
  7. Kansas City Chiefs (5-3)

On the bubble: 8. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3), 9. Houston Texans (3-5), 10. Baltimore Ravens (3-5)

Not technically eliminated but let’s be real here: 11. Cincinnati Bengals (3-6)
, 12. Las Vegas Raiders (2-5), 13. Cleveland Browns (2-6), 14. Miami Dolphins (2-7), 15. New York Jets (1-7), 16. Tennessee Titans (1-8)

There is potential for more change depending on the outcome of Chiefs vs. Bills and Jaguars vs. Raiders in the late window on Sunday. Regardless of those games, however, the Patriots continue looking good in their quest for returning to the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season.

Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte day-to-day with hamstring injury

gettyimages-2237913260.jpg

New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte will be day-to-day with a hamstring injury, head coach Mike Vrabel relayed Monday morning.

Boutte suffered the injury in New England’s 24-23 win over the Falcons on Sunday, leaving the game after playing 18 snaps — his last coming on Stefon Diggs’ second quarter touchdown. Boutte was then listed as questionable to return before being ruled out in the second half.

“Kayshon’s going to be day-to-day,” Vrabel said. “I don’t see him practicing early in the week. We’ll see where that goes late in the week.”

Through nine games, Boutte has been one of Drake Maye’s top targets leading the team with five touchdown receptions while his 431 receiving yards ranks second. The duo has also developed into one of the league’s best downfield threats, as Boutte has hauled in nine-of-10 deep targets for 236 yards and all five of his scores.

In Boutte’s absence, rookie Kyle Williams was thrusted into an elevated role playing a season-high 31 snaps. The third-round pick went without a catch on one target as he seemingly was on the wrong side of a miscommunication with Maye.

Williams, however, had moments where he was open throughout the game and largely matched up against Falcons top cornerback A.J. Terrell.

The 22-year old, who has just two catches on the season while playing 21 percent of New England’s offensive snaps, has spent the early parts of his career moving around the offensive formation. Vrabel has seen him settle down as the year has progressed, and he’ll now get to focus on Boutte’s position along the outside.

“Kyle’s been learning a lot of different position. Excited that he’ll probably get a little greater opportunity going forward,” Vrabel said. “Kyle should be ready to go here for us.”

Patriots fan rooting guide for NFL Week 9

gettyimages-2244872684.jpg

The New England Patriots took on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, to improving to 7-2 on the year and further strengthening their position in the AFC playoff race. Needless to say, our attention on Sunday was on this particular contest.

However, it was far from the only interesting game played this week. As for the others, here is who you should be rooting for.

Monday

8:15 p.m. ET

Arizona Cardinals (2-5) at Dallas Cowboys (3-4-1): Go good game! You could root for ex-Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett in this one, but in the grand scheme of things it makes no difference from a New England point of view. | ESPN/ABC

The following games were played earlier in Week 9:

Thursday

8:15 p.m. ET

Baltimore Ravens (2-5) at Miami Dolphins (2-6): Go Dolphins! While it may seem counterintuitive to root for a division rival, the Dolphins have fallen off the deep end entirely and are no particular threat to anybody at this point in time. Plus, a win would improve New England’s strength of victory. | BLT 28, MIA 6

Sunday

1 p.m. ET

Chicago Bears (4-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-5): Go Bengals! Wait, what? The AFC team over the NFC team? That’s right, for two particular reasons: first, the Bengals have lost five of six games since the Joe Burrow injury and at 3-5 are not a particular danger to New England at this point, and second, a Cincinnati win would improve the Patriots’ always-important strength of schedule and possibly also strength of victory tiebreaker, depending on their meeting in Week 12. | CHI 47, CIN 42

Minnesota Vikings (3-4) at Detroit Lions (5-2): Go good game! It’s been a while since we’ve had one of those. Vikings-Lions has no major impact on the Patriots’ playoff or draft outlook, so there is no need rooting for anybody here. | MIN 27, DET 24

Carolina Panthers (4-4) at Green Bay Packers (5-1-1): Go Panthers! While a Carolina win seems unlikely, it would help with those tiebreakers mentioned above. The Patriots beat the Panthers 42-13 in Week 4. | CAR 16, GB 13

Denver Broncos (6-2) at Houston Texans (3-4): Go Texans! On the one hand, a Broncos win would put more distance between the Patriots and a potential wild card competitor; on the other hand, Denver is also currently fighting for playoff positioning, so we are taking the worse of the two teams. | DEN 18, HST 15

San Francisco 49ers (5-3) at New York Giants (2-6): Go Giants! Sorry Mac Jones, sentimentality can’t beat the Patriots’ strength of schedule and (possible) victory tiebreakers in this one. | SF 34, NYG 24

Indianapolis Colts (7-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3): Go Pittsburgh! This is another tough one, but somebody has to win the AFC North anyway so we might as well go with the Steelers over the current No. 1 seed in the AFC — and the only team currently above the Patriots in the conference standings. | IND 20, PIT 27

Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) at Tennessee Titans (1-7): Go Titans! The Patriots already beat Tennessee, plus the Chargers are another playoff competitor in the AFC. This is an easy call. | LAC 27, TEN 20

4:05 p.m. ET

New Orleans Saints (1-7) at Los Angeles Rams (5-2): Go Saints! Given that we no longer have to worry about the Saints’ seventh-rounder belonging to the Patriots — it is now in Pittsburgh alongside Kyle Dugger — this is an even easier call to make: strength of schedule and victory trumps the Rams. | NO 10, LA 34

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3) at Las Vegas Raiders (2-5): Go Raiders! New England may have lost its opener to the Raiders, but they do not look like a threat in the AFC. Furthermore, them winning would put more space between New England and the current No. 8 seed in the conference. | JAX 30, LV 29 (OT)

4:25 p.m. ET

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) at Buffalo Bills (5-2): Go Chiefs! Just to be clear: we are reluctantly picking the Chiefs in this one, because somebody has to win. And a Kansas City victory would be the slightly better outcome from an AFC East perspective: it would put more space between the Patriots and Bills, thus making a New England division championship more likely. | KC 21, BUF 28

8:20 p.m. ET

Seattle Seahawks (5-2) at Washington Commanders (3-5): Go good game! Another mostly inconsequential game from a Patriots perspective. | SEA 38, WAS 14

NFL trade deadline tracker 2025: Patriots news, rumors, moves, instant analysis

2166050014.jpg

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is nearing, and the New England Patriots might be approaching it differently than the last few seasons. After all, they are well on their way to returning to the playoffs after a three-year absence.

Despite their 6-2 record, however, there is no guarantee they fall into the “buyers” camp this time around. With some players underperforming relative to expectation or past showings, they very well might also be willing to part ways with some of their talent before the trading window closes on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. ET.

One thing seems certain, though. The Patriots under Mike Vrabel, Eliot Wolf and Ryan Cowden are not afraid of making unconventional-looking moves or being active on the trade market. So far this year, after all, they already parted ways with some established veterans, were aggressive in their pursuit of free agency talent, and traded away three of their players (DT Davon Godchaux, QB Joe Milton III, WR Ja’Lynn Polk).

What will they do with the trade deadline coming up? Time will tell, but we will have you covered regardless. Welcome to this year’s version of our Patriots Trade Deadline Tracker.

Patriots trades

ED Keion White to 49ers: A second-round pick in 2023, White entered training camp as a starter along the Patriots’ defensive edge. However, he slid down the depth chart and played a minimal role during the 2025 season so far. He is now being sent to San Francisco alongside a seventh-round draft pick for a 2026 sixth-rounder. | News | Grade | Analysis

S Kyle Dugger to Steelers: A former starting safety and team captain, Dugger fell out of favor following the arrival of new head coach Mike Vrabel. He lost his starting job over the summer and after finding himself relegated to backup and special teams duty has now been moved off the team entirely. The Patriots are getting a sixth-round pick in 2026 for Dugger and a seventh-rounder. | News | Grade | Analysis

Patriots vs. Buccaneers Wednesday injury report: Kayshon Boutte among five non-participants

gettyimages-2236790792.jpg

The New England Patriots began work on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without five.

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and linebacker Christian Elliss were sidelined on Wednesday, as head coach Mike Vrabel shared before his roster reached the practice fields in Foxborough.

From there, ironman center Garrett Bradbury and rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer were present but also did not participate.

Here’s the first injury report leading up to Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Raymond James Stadium.

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

Patriots

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe)
  • WR Kayshon Boutte (hamstring)
  • C Garrett Bradbury (hip)
  • DT Joshua Farmer (ankle)
  • LB Christian Elliss (hip)

Buccaneers

  • RB Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder)
  • WR Chris Godwin Jr. (fibula)
  • LB Haason Reddick (ankle, knee)
  • LB Markees Watts (hand)

The Patriots ruled out Stevenson on the final injury report of last week after a toe injury resulted in three missed practices. With the lead running back sidelined, the depth chart combined for 131 yards from scrimmage along with one touchdown to open November. But there were departures during the 24-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Starting out wide, Boutte drew one target before sustaining a hamstring injury. And Elliss, subbing in off the ball, handled 25 snaps between defense and special teams before sustaining a hip injury. Both were downgraded from questionable to out in the second half. Hip and ankle issues also kept interior linemen on both sides of the ball from practicing outside Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • No players listed

Buccaneers

  • OT Luke Goedeke (foot — IR return)

Notable names remained absent for head coach Todd Bowles’ side of the aisle on Wednesday. But a 40-game Buccaneers starter at right tackle went forward as a limited participant after recently having his 21-day practice window open.

FULL PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • LB Marte Mapu (neck)
  • CB Christian Gonzalez (gameday concussion protocol)

Buccaneers

  • QB Baker Mayfield (knee, oblique)
  • G Luke Haggard (shoulder)
  • LB Lavonte David (knee, rib)
  • CB Zyon McCollum (thumb)
  • CB Jacob Parrish (oblique)

While no Patriots began the week in a limited capacity, a pair began in full, including No. 0. Gonzalez landed hard after going up to contest a 40-yard completion last Sunday. The reigning All-Pro cornerback went to the blue medical tent and then the locker room to be evaluated for a head injury. He was announced as questionable to return.

Patriots vs. Buccaneers Thursday injury report: Garrett Bradbury returns, three stay sidelined

gettyimages-2230420876.jpg

As the New England Patriots returned to the practice fields, so did an ironman on the offensive line.

Veteran center Garrett Bradbury was back as a limited participant along with rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer on Thursday. Both had been non-participants to begin the week due to respective hip and ankle injuries.

But running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and linebacker Christian Elliss all stayed sidelined as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup nears.

Here’s the second injury report leading up to Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Raymond James Stadium.

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

Patriots

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe)
  • WR Kayshon Boutte (hamstring)
  • LB Christian Elliss (hip)

Buccaneers

  • RB Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder)
  • WR Chris Godwin Jr. (fibula)
  • LB Haason Reddick (ankle, knee)
  • LB Markees Watts (hand)

Stevenson has now missed five consecutive practices in Foxborough due to a toe injury. The starting running back was ruled out on the final injury report of last week. And after halftime against the Atlanta Falcons, two other members of the active roster were downgraded from questionable to out. At receiver, Boutte played 18 offensive snaps before sustaining a hamstring injury. And at linebacker, Elliss played 25 snaps between defense and special teams before sustaining a hip injury.

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • C Garrett Bradbury (hip)
  • DT Joshua Farmer (ankle)
  • LB Marte Mapu (neck)

Buccaneers

  • OT Luke Goedeke (foot — IR return)
  • G Ben Bredeson (shoulder)

Serving as a spectator during Wednesday’s practice, Bradbury has played 100 percent of the offensive downs for the Patriots through nine starts. As for the No. 137 overall pick across the line, Farmer has logged 10 tackles during his rookie campaign. The Florida State product stands with one stop for loss as well as one start, one batted pass and one fumble recovery. They were joined in the limited participants by Mapu. The core linebacker began the week in full while managing a neck ailment.

FULL PARTICIPATION

Patriots

  • No players listed

Buccaneers

  • QB Baker Mayfield (knee, oblique)
  • G Luke Haggard (shoulder)
  • LB Lavonte David (knee, rib)
  • CB Zyon McCollum (thumb)
  • CB Jacob Parrish (oblique)

Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez cleared the injury report on Thursday. The reigning All-Pro had previously been listed as a full participant after going through gameday concussion protocol last weekend. He entered the blue medical tent and then the locker room to be evaluated for a head injury in the fourth quarter of the 24-23 win.

Zak Kuhr sees straight-forward solution to Patriots’ red zone woes

gettyimages-2239314607.jpg

The New England Patriots defense has played some good football under interim defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr. Surrendering an average of 18 points per game, the unit is ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring.

However, it’s success is not evenly distributed across the board. While the run defense has looked good, and New England is among the best teams in football on both third and fourth downs, Kuhr’s group has struggled mightily in the red zone: opposing defenses have turned 15 of 20 red zone trips this season into touchdowns.

The 75% conversion rate given up is currently ranked last in the NFL, and something the Patriots know needs to improve. For Kuhr, the solution is quite simple, though.

“We just have to be cleaner,” he explained on Thursday. “We got to clean up the execution, be a little more on the same page and some stuff. And then, as far as the coaching staff as well as, find different answers.”

Kuhr added that adjustments are a point of emphasis for him and the Patriots’ defensive staff. Last week against the Atlanta Falcons, that was an issue.

Going up against an offense that had previously ranked 29th in the league in red zone success rate, they surrendered three touchdowns in three red zone opportunities. All of those TDs were pass plays to wide receiver Drake London, who was able to get favorable matchups through Atlanta successfully challenging New England’s coverage assignment rules.

“I would say the history of this scheme in the past has been successful, but there’s a lot of tape of it out there,” Kuhr said. “We just got to be able to make adjustments now as people are adjusting to what we do.”

The Patriots, who are currently on track to finish as the franchise’s worst red zone offense since charting began in 1998, will get their next opportunity on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The challenge will not become any easier, even though the Bucs are entering Week 10 ranked 26th in the NFL with a conversion rate of 50%.

That still gives them an advantage against the Patriots’ red zone defense, unless Kuhr and company find a way to turn the seemingly easy solution into game day practice.

Patriots vs. Buccaneers Friday injury report: Three starters ruled out for Week 10

gettyimages-2236977085.jpg

The New England Patriots will be down three starters against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and linebacker Christian Elliss have been ruled out for the NFC South road trip, as head coach Mike Vrabel announced during his final press conference of the week.

Here’s the rest of the game statuses for Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Raymond James Stadium.

OUT

Patriots

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe)
  • WR Kayshon Boutte (hamstring)
  • LB Christian Elliss (hip)

Buccaneers

  • RB Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder)
  • WR Chris Godwin Jr. (fibula)
  • LB Haason Reddick (ankle, knee)
  • LB Markees Watts (hand)

Stevenson has missed six consecutive practices due to a toe injury. New England’s leading rusher will now miss his second consecutive game, again putting the depth chart in the hands of rookie TreVeyon Henderson, recent 53-man promotion Terrell Jennings and a potential veteran elevation from the practice squad. The backfield combined for 131 yards and a touchdown across 30 offensive touches to begin November.

Both Boutte and Elliss did not finish what became a 24-23 win last Sunday. Both will now be inactive for the first time this fall. The wideout stands with a team-high five touchdowns on the season, but went from questionable to out with a hamstring injury after halftime. A hip injury resulted in the same downgrade for the off-ball linebacker. Neither returned to practice over the course of the week. And for head coach Todd Bowles, neither did four Buccaneers, including starters at running back, wide receiver and outside linebacker.

QUESTIONABLE

Patriots

  • No players listed

Buccaneers

  • OT Luke Goedeke (foot — IR return)
  • G Luke Haggard (shoulder)

The Patriots will travel to Tampa with no questionable game designations. That’s the prognosis after ironman center Garrett Bradbury, who has played all 579 offensive snaps through nine starts, returned as a limited participant midway through the week along with rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer.

While listed with hip and ankle ailments, respectively, the pair of linemen were upgraded to full-go on the final injury report. That was also the case for core special-teamer Marte Mapu.

Who gets your Patriots midseason awards?

debates01-1-1.jpg

The first nine weeks of the 2025 NFL season are in the books, and they have been quite successful for the New England Patriots. The team’s overall record of 7-2 speaks for itself, but achieving it would not have been possible without some impressive individual performances as well.

Let’s honor those at the halfway point of the season.

Who gets your Patriots midseason awards?

First a look at what our staff thinks, and then it’s on to your answers.

Rich Hill

MVP: QB Drake Maye. Easy. The team was always going to go as far as their second-year quarterback could develop, but no one could have anticipated he’d take such a leap forward into the MVP conversation for the entire league.

Best Offensive Player: WR Stefon Diggs. This unit has gone from one of the worst in the league over the past couple of years to one of the best and Diggs is the biggest addition. He’s been a mid-level WR1 in his return from injury, which is meant as legitimate praise.

Best Defensive Player: CB Christian Gonzalez. He’s missed time for a few different injuries, but it’s incredibly apparent that they’re a top 10 unit in the league when he’s healthy and a bottom 10 unit when he’s out.

Best Rookie: LT Will Campbell. He’s stepped in on the left side and has been an average starter through the first half of his rookie campaign, which is all you can really ask for. He’s young and the sky is the limit.
Best Free Agency Signing:

Best Coach: OC Josh McDaniels. He has the offense humming as one of the most efficient passing attacks in the entire league, and has been able to cover for one of the worst rushing attacks.

Biggest Surprise: How bad the rushing attack has been. Keeping this on the offensive side of the ball, but no one could have anticipated that the Patriots would have the second-worst rushing attack in football.

Best Game: Patriots 23, Bills 20, IN BUFFALO. This was the Patriots coming out party as a contender in an otherwise weak year for the league. It might not have been the prettiest or most efficient outing, but it was certainly the most meaningful.

Matt St. Jean

MVP: Drake Maye. Drake Maye was a talented but flawed QB in 2024, one who showed flashes but who needed serious refinement. In 2025, he isn’t just the most valuable player on the Patriots – he’s a serious contender for most valuable player in the league. His combination of athleticism and quick decision-making has unlocked every area of the field for New England’s offense.

Best Offensive Player: Stefon Diggs. Recovering from a torn ACL, many weren’t sure what Stefon Diggs would be in 2025. What they’ve gotten is a receiver averaging 2.29 yards per route run, his best mark since 2022. Outside of Maye, no one has been better than Diggs on offense for New England.

Best Defensive Player: Milton Williams. In 2024, no Patriots defensive tackle had 20 pressures on the season. Through 9 games in 2025, Williams has 32 pressures while also being a team leader and a key part of New England’s elite run defense. Money well spent.

Best Rookie: Will Campbell, honorable mention to Andy Borregales. I was a doubter of how Will Campbell would fare at left tackle in the NFL, and I am happy to say he has largely proved me wrong thus far. Campbell has been a massive improvement at one of the weakest links on the offensive line from a season ago. Rookie kicker Andy Borregales deserves a mention here as well after bouncing back from a tough start to provide stability in the kicking game.

Best Free Agency Signing: Milton Williams. The Patriots paid Milton Williams to improve their defense, and he’s done that by being the best player on the unit.

Best Coach: Josh McDaniels. McDaniels has empowered Drake Maye to be his best self. He has designed an offense that gives him the ability to attack defenses in many ways while designing protection plans that keep him clean. Add in well-timed “easy buttons” in the offense to give easy opportunities to the young quarterback, and this offense is humming while helping Maye develop. The real highlight for McDaniels was his 7-play, 77-yard 2nd-half opening touchdown drive against the top-ranker Browns defense that had an excellent unit scrambling and put the game on ice.

Biggest Surprise: Kayshon Boutte. Boutte has emerged as an elite deep threat for Drake Maye in 2025. He ranks 1st in the NFL in yards per target and 2nd in yards per reception while catching 3 out of every 4 targets. His sure hands and savvy route running have impressed someone who was skeptical about how high his ceiling in the NFL could be.

Best Game: Patriots at Bills. First Sunday Night Football game in two seasons, and you go on the road to defeat the reigning MVP and a top Super Bowl contender on the backs of your developing young quarterback capped by a game-winning field goal from your rookie kicker. From the Stefon Diggs catch along the sidelines to the Drake Maye stiff-arm to the team embracing Borregales, this game is filled with iconic moments on the night that proved the Patriots are officially back.

Pat Lane

MVP: Drake Maye, this one is a slam dunk pick. Maye not only is the MVP of the Patriots, he’s playing the MVP of the whole dang league. If Maye can sustain this play, the sky is the limit for the Patriots this year and for years into the future.

Best Offensive Player: Stefon Diggs, This is obviously outside of Maye, but he’s been everything we could’ve hoped for and more since coming over to the Patriots in free agency. Diggs has brought leadership for the entire room, and has been the team’s most consistent weapon on offense. He’s been fantastic for the team and has helped turn around the receiver room.

Best Defensive Player: Marcus Jones, This award could’ve gone to a few guys, and I know he had some struggles in the goal line against Drake London on Sunday, but Marcus Jones has been incredible for the Patriots this season. He’s been a lockdown slot defender, consistently made plays in every game in the pass and run game, and has contributed on special teams as well. His play was rewarded with a shiny new contract, and, if he keeps this play up, that deal is going to be a bargain.

Best Rookie: Will Campbell, The Patriots were in desperate need of consistent tackle play, and they’ve gotten that with the 4th pick in the draft. Campbell hasn’t just been the Patriots best tackle, he has graded out as one of the 20 best tackles in the NFL for the first half of his rookie year. It hasn’t always been perfect, but we very rarely have to talk about his play, which is exactly what you want out of your offensive linemen.

Best Free Agent Signing: Milton Williams, The Patriots were hoping for a guy who would be a game wrecker when they signed Williams away from the Eagles, and they’ve gotten just that from Williams. He’s been nearly unblockable, and has been a dominant force in both the run and pass game. He also has been a leader on and off the field, with teammates raving about his work ethic in the weight and meeting rooms. So far, he’s been worth every penny of the $104M contract they gave him this offseason.

Best Coach: Josh McDaniels, It hasn’t been all McDaniels, but there’s no doubt that part of the reason why the offense is playing so well is because of Josh’s scheme. His ability to adjust to what the defense is throwing at the offense is elite. To nurture a young quarterback, you need a great offensive coordinator, and, while he’s proven he’s not a good head coach(which actually helps the Patriots), he has proven that he’s still one of the best coordinators in the game today.

Biggest Surprise: Drake Maye, I think we were all excited about Drake Maye coming into this season. He showed flashes last year, and he looked poised to make a leap with McDaniels as his offensive coordinator, but this season is about as shocking as a season as you’ll ever see from a player. He went from being unable to beat out Jacoby Brissett for the starting job out of camp to being a legitimate MVP candidate in 15 months. Not even the most optimistic of Patriots fans could’ve seen this coming.

Best Game: Bills, The Patriots have played some very good games, but the Sunday night matchup in Buffalo takes the cake so far this season. The combination of the Patriots introducing themselves on a national stage and Drake Maye making multiple jaw-dropping plays makes this game the best game of the season. Add in the fact that it ended with a game winning drive and 52 yard field goal, and you have the best game of the season… so far.

Matthew Rewinski

MVP: Drake Maye and it’s not close. There’s gonna be a lot of chalk picks in this exercise, and this is the chalkiest. 2025 Drake is conservatively the 98th-percentile outcome you could hope for in your wildest dreams when you spend a top-5 pick on a QB! Outside of a couple weird games to open the season, Maye has played tetherball with our enemies in every way possible – beating defenses with preposterous mailbox throws, tap-dancing in the pocket to buy that extra 0.6 seconds for a downfield bomb to open up, scrambling to make a 7-yard sack into 1st and 10, and generally ending games by halfway through the 3rd quarter. You know you got a great one when the biggest criticism of Maye is his very 23-year-old belief that (hopefully you’ve seen The Nice Guys) “I don’t think I can die!”

Best Offensive Player: It’s probably Drake again, but I’m assuming the intention is like Offensive Player of the Year and this is a de facto non-QB award, so let’s give it to Stefon Diggs simply because the Patriots don’t beat the world-destroying Bills without him. Period. Did Diggs bring a little something extra to that game? Of course he did! That’s what you sign superstars to do, and the Patriots haven’t had a game-breaker like that since prime (healthy) Gronk. Also, how about the allegedly mercurial malcontent Distraction™ Stefon Diggs morphing overnight into a do-your-job, F-the-stats-I’m-here-for-wins role model?

Best Defensive Player: I’ll go with Milton Williams, although Harold Landry consistently being a menace off the edge has been extremely fun to watch. Coming in, Milton Williams was a lot of projection; he was a rotational player in Philly, coming off a hot streak on a stacked team at exactly the right time, and if you remember, he almost signed with the Panthers before the Patriots one-upped Carolina and sealed the deal. And now that he’s playing 65% of the defensive snaps, Williams and Barmore have combined to man the middle of the league’s best rushing defense that still has yet to allow a 50-yard rusher.

Best Rookie: Will Campbell, although to be honest that says more about the rest of the class falling into the category of “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed”. Still, Campbell’s been mostly very good, with more than a few tape dorks commenting that he’s done well combining his athleticism with the kind of chess-match savvy you can only get with 3 starting years of SEC ball. Meanwhile, most of rest of the class of ’25…..what are we doing here?

Best Free Agency Signing: It’s Stefon Diggs again. Here’s more Diggs fun facts for you: in advanced stats-land, he’s comfortably achieving his highest receiving success rate and catch percentage of his career, on some of the highest yards per target of his career, and he’s doing all this while still being on a pitch count and only playing 55% of snaps. Imagine what he’ll be able to do when Josh really turns him loose down the stretch.

Best Coach: This is where I have to hold a big fat L and admit that Josh McDaniels has absolutely killed it. I was convinced that he was just going to trot out the same ol’, same ol’ that Brady liked, and to his credit he’s added a whole bunch of new tricks to his bag and, most impressively, gotten a whole offense with significant numbers of rookies, young bucks, and free agents to play together like a symphony. Even his classic Josh McDaniels Bullshit is working, because the players are executing it and the play-calling (mostly) fits the situations. That’s freakin’ coaching.

Biggest Surprise: This may be cheating but I’m going to go with “how the wide receiver rotation has actually worked out vs how we were bashing our heads in trying to project all summer”. First, the positives – Kayshon Boutte has built himself into a deadly deep threat despite his oft-mentioned lack of burner speed, Pop Douglas is settling in nicely after a rough first month of the season, Mack Hollins has been the definition of reliable whether he’s getting 3 targets or 10, and you’re probably tired of my Stefon Diggs fanboying by now. Unfortunately, success has come at the cost of releasing all-time vibes guy Kendrick Bourne, hitting the Eject button and trading 2024 37th overall pick Ja’Lynn Polk, and Kyle Williams seems to be stuck in either gadget plays or looking back at Drake after the ball goes somewhere other than where he is. Not what you want from a top-100 pick! But, as they say, there’s a lot of football left.

Best Game: Only one choice here. Defeating the Buffalo Bills in their own house without gadgets or Hoth weather and when they weren’t purposefully throwing the game was an exorcism.

Patriots elevate veterans D’Ernest Johnson, Darius Harris from practice squad for Week 10

The New England Patriots headed toward Raymond James Stadium with veteran reinforcements.

The organization elevated running back D’Ernest Johnson and linebacker Darius Harris from the practice squad on the eve of Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Johnson, 29, has now gotten the call-up for consecutive games after signing in Foxborough at the end of October. The vested running back debuted back deep on five kickoff returns last week versus the Atlanta Falcons. He did so while rounding out an active depth chart led by rookie TreVeyon Henderson and recent 53-man roster promotion Terrell Jennings.

A South Florida alum who went undrafted in 2018, Johnson set out with the Alliance of American Football’s Orlando Apollos the following year. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound rusher has since been a member of the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals on the way to appearing in 97 NFL games. Logging three starts as well as three touchdowns, he stands with 215 carries for 989 yards and 53 catches for 467 yards. The former FedEx Ground Player of the Week’s career includes 920 snaps on offense and 946 snaps on special teams.

Harris, 29, previously served as an elevation in September versus the Carolina Panthers, notching a pair of tackles across 16 snaps on special teams before reverting. The 6-foot-2, 238-pound core linebacker joined the practice squad shortly after its formation.

Entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Harris made previous stops with the Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. The Middle Tennessee product has appeared in 38 games, including six starts on defense. His run includes 61 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. He also has taken the field for seven playoff games en route to winning three Super Bowls.

Three standard elevations are permitted per player under league rules. Both vets now have one remaining.

New England ruled out running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and linebacker Christian Elliss on the final injury report. All three starters remained sidelined throughout preparations for Tampa Bay due to toe, hamstring and hip injuries, respectively.

Sunday’s kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.

Sunday Patriots Notes: Drake Maye feeling the love in New England

imagn-27499340.jpg

Following a pair of home games, the 7-2 New England Patriots are heading south for a showdown with the 6-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Bucs find themselves down several starters despite coming off a bye, the matchup will remain a strong test for the Patriots, who are also down a pair of offensive starters, to keep their six game winning streak alive.

Here on Pats Pulpit, our focus this week both wrapped up the win over the Falcons and prep for the Buccaneers. For anything else not covered previously, let’s clean out the notebook. Welcome to this week’s edition of our Sunday Patriots Notes.

New England support

Athletes in New England know things are different here than most other sports cities. A city rich in sports history that has featured dozens of championships and some of the greatest athletes to ever play their respective games. It brings a pressure, and almost an expectation, to win.

That pressure is not for everyone. But those who find success are treated like royalty. And nobody is finding that out more than Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

Through the first nine games of his sophomore season, Maye has led the Patriots to a 7-2 record as he has catapulted into the MVP discussion. As Maye has elevated his game to new heights, the fan support has elevated as well.

This past week, the quarterback attended the Boston Celtics game on Monday with his wife, Ann Michael, and teammate Will Campbell. After getting mobbed by young fans before the game, Maye and Campbell were shown on the Jumbotron to a loud applause. The cameras then cut to a young fan in the crowd wearing a shirt that said, “I love Drake Maye.”

The next day, Maye made his way down to Smithfield, RI. where he served as the Fall Speaker at Bryant University. When he was introduced, he received a loud ovation and students in attendance quickly began chants of “MVP!” At the start of the panel, Maye could barely begin a sentence before another round of applause would begin.

“I didn’t expect this tonight,” he told the crowd. “It’s pretty sick.”

While Maye is not usually one to soak in the praise, he has appreciated the support for the fans early in his career.

“I think they’re excited about what we’re doing. We’re trying to give them something to cheer for, and we got to bring it every week, but it’s pretty cool,” Maye said Wednesday. “Pretty cool to see some of the reactions you get, and it’s a reminder of the platform that I’m given and what you can do with it – spread love and spread messages. It’s really cool, and I appreciate the way this city has embraced me. We’ve got to keep going.”

Godwin-Diggs comparison

With the Patriots traveling down to Tampa Bay this week, it serves as a timely reminder to revisit one of the defining moments from the past offseason.

Back in March as NFL Free Agency began, the Patriots targeted wide receiver Chris Godwin with a hefty financial offer. Godwin, however, turned down “generational money,” according to his agent to return to the team that drafted him.

Fast forward to now and Godwin, who has been ruled out for Sunday, has played just two games for the Buccaneers this season as he worked back from a season-ending left ankle fracture-dislocation to only suffer a fibula injury in Week 6. Meanwhile, the Patriots eventually went on to sign wide receiver Stefon Diggs who now leads the team in receptions (45) and receiving yards (508) while being a key locker room figure.

Mental health

As Patriots special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer took the podium on Thursday, he opened by sharing his condolences to the Dallas Cowboys organization after the sudden passing of Marshawn Kneeland. Kneeland, 24, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ahead of My Cause My Cleats, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez continues to support The KyleCares Foundation, who helps high school and colleges in New England support student mental health

“Kyle Cares is all about mental health,” Gonzalez said. “I was able to go to an event at a local high school, and just learning about this foundation, learning about Kyle Cares and what they stand for, I felt like it was a no-brainer for me to pick this to partner with and honor my friend Keith [Miller].”

The Patriots have made sure to keep similar resources available to their players.

“That’s something that I think we have always been intentional with, is trying to find and put as many points of contact around our players, our coaches and our employees that we possibly can, that they feel comfortable sharing things and communicating,” Mike Vrabel said. “Just continue to touch on it and bring it to everybody’s mind as we go through and we do this thing with life and football.”

Back to the Bay

Sunday’s game in Tampa Bay will mark Carlton Davis’ first game back since the Buccaneers traded him in March of 2024. Davis, who spent the first six year of his career and won Super Bowl LV with the Bucs, shared this week he was salty and in disbelief following the trade.

“I didn’t see it coming. My agent didn’t see it coming. It was definitely a surprise for me,” Davis said. “It’s just an example of how this game can go, and how cutthroat it can be, sometimes.”

Davis still resides in Tampa during the offseason and has a lot of love for the city and organization, but has been grateful for the journey of being traded to Detroit and now playing in New England.

Speed debates

No offensive lineman wants to record a tackle, as the opportunity to do so means something went poorly offensively. Last Sunday, opportunity was there for Will Campbell after Drake Maye lost a fumble on a strip sack. Campbell went on to chase down Falcons pass rusher James Pearce to save a touchdown in a play Mike Vrabel praised after the game.

The play also earned respect from Campbell’s teammates while also sparking a debate in the offensive line room.

“[Bradbury] and Will were laughing the other day — ‘who’s faster?’” Drake Maye shared. “But then Will chased down a defensive end.”

Back at the NFL Combine, Campbell ran a 4.98-second 40-yard dash while Bradbury clocked a 4.92 40-yard dash back in 2019. Fellow rookie Jared Wilson also made sure to throw his name into the ring after running a 4.84-second 40 in March.

Edge depth

Ahead of the NFL trade deadline, many though the Patriots could look to add pass rush depth along the edge. With no moves made, New England will continue with the group led by Harold Landry and K’Lavon Chaisson, with Anfernee Jennings, Elijah Ponder, and Caleb Murphy serving as depth option.

“I like it. We’ve got a mix of young guys and older guys,” outside linebackers coach Mike Smith said. “I think Harold and KC are playing well. I think there are things we can get better on. I like where Ponder is, and I like the things that Ant can bring in as well. Ant’s got a specific skill based with his power and setting things off with his power. I love the way he sets the edge with the run. It’s just a good mixture of guys. They’ve been here with me since we got here.”

If New England needs more juice along the edge, the thought of elevating fifth-round pick Bradyn Swinson, who recorded 8.5 sacks his final season at LSU, off the practice squad could become a reality down the line. Swinson was recently named show team player of the week for his work simulating Jalon Walker ahead of the Falcons game.

“It creates a lot of opportunities with Keion leaving. I wish him nothing but the best,” Smith said. “Anytime somebody’s leaving, it opens the door for Ponder and Ant, and all those guys, Swinson. But it’s big. It’s more reps and more opportunities.”

Road warriors

The Patriots join the Seattle Seahawks as the only teams with undefeated road records in 2025, each being 4-0. A win this week at Tampa Bay would give the Patriots a 5-0 road record for the seventh time in franchise history and the first since 2021.

Week ahead

A short week is on deck for the Patriots as they’ll prepare for a Thursday night matchup with the New York Jets. Ahead of a matchup against another member of the 2024 QB class in Michael Penix, New England will likely maintain their typical in-season schedule in Week 9:

  • Monday, Nov. 10: Mike Vrabel media availability, player media availability
  • Tuesday, Nov. 11: Practice, Mike Vrabel media availability, player media availability, injury report
  • Wednesday, Nov. 12: TBD
  • Thursday, Nov. 13: Game day vs. New York Jets at Gillette Stadium (8:15 p.m. ET)
  • Friday, Nov. 14: No media availability
  • Saturday, Nov. 15: No media availability
  • Sunday, Nov. 16: No media availability
