Packers re-sign WR amid injuries

The Green Bay Packers’ receivers are banged up. Despite no receiver being injured in the Packers’ preseason opener against the New York Jets, practice reps have taken out Jayden Reed (foot), Dontayvion Wicks (calf), Romeo Doubs (unknown) and Savion Williams (unknown). On Tuesday, both Doubs and Williams dropped out of action in their last practice before the team’s trip to Indianapolis.

Including Christian Watson, who is coming off an ACL tear, only one of the Packers’ top six receivers is healthy right now: first-round rookie Matthew Golden.

Earlier today, Green Bay waived running back Jalen White and cornerback Isaiah Dunn with injury designations and signed running back Tyrion Davis-Price, leaving them with an open roster spot. Now, the team has filled that position.

According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Packers have added wide receiver Kawaan Baker off of waivers. Baker was let go by the Las Vegas Raiders yesterday.

Baker has spent some time in Green Bay already. He was on the Packers’ practice squad for about three weeks back in the 2022 season.

The South Alabama product was drafted in 2021 by the New Orleans Saints, where he saw action in two games as a rookie on special teams. In 2022, he was suspended for the first six games of the regular season for performance-enhancing substances. When he returned from suspension, the Saints released him, and he was added to the Packers’ practice squad.

Since his stint in Green Bay, he’s spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Saints, New England Patriots and Raiders, either on their offseason roster or practice squad. He was also rostered by the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas last year, but he never got on the field for San Antonio. The Brahmas were cut-happy last year. By Late May, they had released twice as many players as any other team in the league.

Before signing with the Raiders, Baker had also worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason.

Matthew Golden Fulfills Heartfelt Pre-Draft Promise to Grandmother

The Green Bay Packers made waves during the offseason when they not only hosted the 2025 NFL Draft but also selected a wide receiver in the first round for the first time in decades. With the 23rd pick, they grabbed Texas standout Matthew Golden. Almost 4 months later, Golden is still the talk of Green Bay, not just for his impressive start to training camp, but for fulfilling a heartwarming promise he made during draft week.

Ahead of the draft, the now 22-year-old shared in an interview that his first NFL paycheck would go toward buying back his grandmother Penny’s house, which the family had lost a few years earlier. Recently, Golden partnered with real estate giant RE/MAX to make that promise a reality. In the video titled Get Golden Home posted to the company’s YouTube page, the Packers rookie shares memories of growing up in his childhood home, opening up about how much the house meant to his family and how hard it was on them to lose it. But when his agent, Nimesh Patel, discovers the house is in poor shape and would require a complete rebuild, they pivot and instead work together to find the perfect home for Penny.

Packers, Colts joint practice: What both beats have to say

The Green Bay Packers took an early trip to Indianapolis this week, their opponent for their second game of the preseason. Together, the Packers and Colts are hosting a joint practice, where the two teams will face off with their starters in a more controlled environment than a live game. According to Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur, the plan is for the starters to get looks in this practice but sit out Saturday’s preseason game, before the starters are sent back out for full-contact action against the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason finale.

Sometimes, news from these joint practices is one-sided. So to paint a better picture of what’s going down in Indianapolis today, I’ll be throwing in social media posts from both the Packers and Colts beat reporters to give you a more complete view of Thursday’s action.

Follow along, and I hope you enjoy it. We’ll probably be doing the same when the Seahawks come to Green Bay for joint practice next week, too.

On the front end, we should note that quarterback Jordan Love (thumb) will not be on the practice field versus the Colts. Love had surgery on his non-throwing hand this week and is expected to return to the field next week, though it’s unclear whether he’ll be a full-go for the joint practice against Seattle. The last time the Packers took the field, their receivers were also injured, with five of their top six players at the position facing some sort of issue.

Cheese Curds, 8/14: Jordan Morgan shows promise at left tackle

When Jordan Morgan arrived in Green Bay as the 25th overall pick in 2024, the transition was anything but smooth. The Packers shifted the former Arizona standout inside to right guard in hopes of early playing time. The learning curve was steep, and Morgan succumbed to a shoulder injury after just 186 snaps.

“It was hard starting all college and coming here and having to just sit back and watch,” Morgan recently told Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “I had to win that spot… and just be that guy.”

Wood’s article highlights the potential the Packers see in Morgan, as they move him back to his natural position of left tackle. With Rasheed Walker sidelined by a groin injury, Morgan has taken every first-team rep on Jordan Love’s blindside during camp. Most agree that he looked sharp in the preseason opener, playing 36 snaps without a pressure or penalty — a bright spot for an otherwise struggling offensive line.

This is usually the part of a young player’s arc where GM Brian Gutekunst says something about his best football being in front of him.

“He’s had a really good camp,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said. “He’s a young player whose best football is going to be ahead of him.”

Well would you look at that.

Sarcasm aside, Morgan’s quick feet and improved confidence have been evident to those covering practice, even as he continues to acclimate — or reacclimate — to the position. Though Walker’s experience makes him the Week 1 favorite, Morgan’s strong preseason could force a tough decision for the coaching staff.

If Morgan is able to emerge as the starting left tackle, and grows into a high quality player, Gutekunst will have earned another garage fridge beer.

The Packers are telling us they’re buying Lukas Van Ness

Perhaps the non-injury story of Packers camp so far is the apparent ascension of 2023 first-round draft pick Lukas Van Ness. After two very disappointing campaigns to start his NFL career, the third-year defensive end seems to have made a big leap this offseason and it is showing up on the practice field, even against solid competition.

At the Packers’ joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, Van Ness made waves against the Colts starting line:

That Colts line as a whole is hardly anything to write home about, but Raimann is the fresh recipient of a four-year $100M deal with $60M guaranteed. That’s a real NFL starting offensive tackle.

A third year breakout from Van Ness would be a desperately welcomed sight after two disappointing years to begin his career. Van Ness didn’t break 40% of snaps played in either of his first two seasons and posted below-average pressure rates for a defensive end/EDGE player in both campaigns. That said, it hasn’t been all bad; one thing that was always notable on film for him is his stoutness against the run. He routinely throws tight ends around when given the unfortunate assignment, and holds his water against offensive tackles.

What has been desperately missing was a consistent pass rush presence. Teams don’t draft defensive ends in the top-15 to be just stout run defenders. Still, in fairness to Van Ness, he was seen at the time as a project. The “no collegiate starts” fun fact is more of anomaly for Iowa’s deference to senior players in their program, as Van Ness played starter-level snaps at Iowa his final year there, but he came out early. Even given this caveat, Van Ness was fourth in the pecking order at the start of last season, behind Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, and JJ Enagbare. It was given away in that pre-season that he was destined to at least begin the season in a backup role, given he received quite a few snaps in the pre-season. Van Ness played 23 snaps in the pre-season opener last year before playing in another 17 against Denver, most of which came with the second defensive group.

This year however, it appears Van Ness is firmly planted as a starting defensive end across from Rashan Gary. In the Packers’ opening preseason game against the New York Jets, Van Ness exclusively played with the first-team defense, logging only nine snaps.

Within the context of that game there wasn’t too much to write home about. Van Ness had a nice run stop, but the Packers defense had a couple of errors and an atypical playcall in the red-zone (Hafley is never calling cover-1 against a scrambling quarterback in the redzone during the regular season) that lead to a scoring drive, but there’s really nothing to be concerned with there, in my opinion.

The key takeaway is that not only is Van Ness seemingly having a good camp beating up on Rasheed Walker and Jordan Morgan, but he has been able to register wins against a freshly-minted $100M tackle and the Packers are buying into his breakout by treating him like a locked-in starter. The Packers may finally be rewarded for their patience, and could be looking at a strong-and-sturdy pass rush duo at defensive end.

Packers vs. Colts, preseason week 2: Game time, how to watch, & more

This afternoon, the Green Bay Packers will continue on with their preseason as they take on the Indianapolis Colts. The Packers will be without starting quarterback Jordan Love, who had minor surgery on the thumb of his non-throwing hand earlier in the week. That leaves the team to start backup Malik Willis at quarterback this Saturday.

It will be Willis’ second start against the Colts as a Packer, although this one will not count in the standings. Willis started last year’s week two matchup at Lambeau Field, helping lead the Packers to a 16-10 victory as the team heavily relied on Josh Jacobs and its running game.

Love will skip both this game and next week’s preseason finale, but he probably would not have played in this game even without the injury. Head coach Matt LaFleur revealed his plans this week that most of the Packers’ key starters will sit this game out, especially after they got plenty of reps during the teams’ joint practice on Thursday. That means that it should be almost exclusively second- and third-stringers taking the field throughout the afternoon for the green and gold.

Unlike last week’s Packers-Jets game, today’s game will not be broadcast live on NFL Network. That means that fans outside of the Packers’ and Colts’ local markets will need to have an NFL+ subscription in order to watch the game live.
