Follow along as the Nats play their first game in the post Rizzo/Davey era

The Nationals have been the talk of the baseball world over the past 48 hours. After being swept by the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, they fired manager Davey Martinez, with the club since 2018, and general manager Mike Rizzo, with the club since 2007. Now, they will enter the first game of their new era with new interim Miguel Cairo and interim general manager Mike DeBartolo at the helm.

The Nationals first lineup in the Cairo era looks similar to a standard Davey lineup versus righties, with the only difference being Riley Adams is behind the dish with Keibert Ruiz going back on the IL. Taking the ball for the Nats is Jake Irvin, who earned the win in his last start after going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs, all in the first from a three run homer.

The Cardinals will roll out a standard lineup against righties for them, with the biggest change being another day out of the lineup for Nolan Arenado as he recovers from a shoulder injury against the Cubs on Friday. Nolan Gorman will take his place at third base and bat fifth. On the mound for the Cards is right hander Sonny Gray, who has a 3.51 ERA on the year and a 2.86 ERA in his last 7 starts.

Mike DeBartolo cannot be handed the Washington Nationals GM job

MLB: General Managers Meetings

Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals need to have an extensive search for their next GM, not just hand it to the interim

It is clear that Mike DeBartolo is a very different man from Mike Rizzo, his predecessor and the man he had worked under for over a decade. He has a different background, and from his first press conference, it is clear he has a different way of looking at baseball.

Mike DeBartolo will step into the Nationals' general manager position.

— Nationals on MASN (@masnNationals) July 9, 2025

His focus on analytics has already endeared himself to fans and local reporters alike. I have to admit, I was very impressed when I heard DeBartolo talk yesterday. The Columbia graduate is very clearly a smart guy and I could see him succeeding if given the chance.

However, the Lerner family better not just hand him the job. There needs to be a nation wide search to find the best and brightest minds from across Major League Baseball. The Lerner family needs to bring in many candidates who can provide unique insights. We put out a list of a few potential candidates and those guys all should at least be contacted.

The Internal vs External Path:

That is not to say they have to hire someone outside the organization, though that would be my preference. After all, for as smart as DeBartolo is, he was around during the malaise of the 2020’s.

That is not to say DeBartolo cannot succeed. There is actually a pretty recent example of a team who won a World Series before entering a malaise in the Kansas City Royals. After firing Dayton Moore, the architect of their championship, they decided to stay in house, hiring J.J. Picollo. Since becoming GM prior to the 2022 season, Picollo has done a solid job modernizing the Royals organization and he led them to a playoff appearance last year.

Like DeBartolo, Picollo was the analytics guy in an organization that was not analytically inclined before he took over. Since he has become GM, the Royals have done some impressive things, especially on the pitching development side. Guys like Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic have really taken off since Picollo has arrived. I think DeBartolo could be that kind of GM for the Nats.

However, on the flip side we can look at the Tigers. We took a deep dive into the Tigers rebuild and how it got resuscitated by new GM Scott Harris. The Tigers needed an innovative mind to pull themselves out of their extended struggles. Harris has provided them with that. His improvements to the player development has turned guys who were struggling under the previous regime and made them big time contributors.

You can win in different ways. Hiring the internal guy is not necessarily a bad thing. DeBartolo seems very different from Rizzo and could be a good candidate. He absolutely should be interviewed, but as one of many names interviewing for the job.

Cast a Wide Net:

There is no one right way to go about this, but there are wrong ways to go. Hiring DeBartolo without doing a serious search would be a bad move. It would be another example of the Lerner family not being all in and just doing the thing that let’s them do the least amount of work.

There needs to be a big search. The beauty of a search is that you can learn things from people even if you hire them. Clearly the Nationals need to modernize. When asked if the Nats needed to modernize, DeBartolo pretty much said yes without saying yes.

Getting all of these bright minds in the room would give the Lerner’s great insights. They really do not know anything other than the Mike Rizzo way. Rizzo has been the Lerner’s guy for nearly 2 decades.

Mike Rizzo is a Nationals legend, but given recent history, it is clear that the Nationals organization need an infusion of new ideas. Talking to some of the smartest voices from around the league would teach the Lerner’s so much.

Guys like the ones we listed as potential candidates will probably be talking about the importance of analytics and discussing what kinds of technology the Lerner’s need to spend on. It is important that the Lerner family hears these kinds of things from people outside the organization.

I would also prefer an outside candidate because it would be a fresh start. We will always appreciate the Rizzo era, but it is over now. Despite being so different, DeBartolo has worked for Rizzo for a decade plus. I would love for the Nationals to have a new set of eyes from outside the organization take a look at the situation here and act accordingly.

If the Lerner family conducts a serious search and decides Mike DeBartolo is the best guy, the fans will accept that. However, if they just hand DeBartolo the job, it will be a tougher sell. It would be yet another example of the Lerner family being lazy and taking the easy way out.

I am fascinated to see how this GM hunt goes. It is something I have never experienced as a fan before because Mike Rizzo has been around for so long. However, we are going to get one now. Hopefully it is an exhaustive search where the Lerner’s go far and wide to find the best candidate.

Follow along as the Nationals look for their first win in their new era

Last night’s loss kicked off the post-Rizzo and Davey era. Now the team is looking for their first win in this new era. To do this, they will need to knock off a Cardinals team that has been very good at home this season.

The lineup for tonight is an odd but explainable one. It looks like a lineup you would put out against a left handed pitcher. The likes of Amed Rosario and Alex Call are in for Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile. However, Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante is right handed. The reason the Nats did this is because Pallante has been better against left handed hitters this year. Newly crowned All-Star MacKenzie Gore will take the mound.

Follow along as the new look Nats face off against the Cardinals in a rubber match

The Nationals got their first win of the Miguel Cairo/Mike DeBartolo era last night with a comprehensive 8-2 win over the Cardinals. MacKenzie Gore was excellent, the offense was humming and the bullpen locked things down. Hopefully we can see something similar tonight.

After going with a more right handed heavy lineup against Andre Pallante, who had reverse splits, the Nats are putting their left handed bats back in. Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile will both come back into the fold after sitting last night. Brady House will get the day off with Paul DeJong replacing him at third. Drew Millas will also get his first start behind the plate since being recalled. Michael Soroka will look to bounce back after a rough outing on July 4th.

Who Will Lead the Washington Nationals in 2026? Inside the Search for the Nats Next Manager

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Cleveland Guardians

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol (37) stands in the dugout in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. | David Richard-Imagn Images

With the Washington Nationals expected to make a pivotal managerial decision this offseason, we explore the most likely paths forward and what it could mean for the team’s long-term rebuild.

The Washington Nationals are in a position that no team wants to be in. With the mid-season firing of General Manager Mike Rizzo and Field Manager Dave Martinez, Washington now has to find a new regime to come in and turn the franchise around. Martinez and Rizzo were the organizational leaders who helped Washington win the World Series in 2019, and it is going to be a challenge to change this franchise.

Fans were starting to lose hope in Dave Martinez; however, this will not be an easy position to fill. Great managers hit the open market every year, whether that is an assistant or bench coach looking for a big opportunity or an experienced manager trying to find success elsewhere. Washington will have options, but who will be the best?

Even though the 2026 off-season is months away, let’s dive in and look into the top manager candidates for the Washington Nationals and their future.

Miguel Cairo, Washington Nationals Interim Manager

Cairo is currently sitting as the interim manager for the Washington Nationals and could hold his position into 2026. This is not his first time being thrown into the spotlight. Back in 2022, Cairo took over later in the season for Tony da Russa and the Chicago White Sox. He finished with an 18-16 record, but the challenge is steeper here in Washington. With a successful second half, Cairo could earn himself the position, but it is too early to tell.

A better approach might be to start from scratch by bringing in a new team and trying to change the culture in Washington. However, if the new regime has a great trade deadline and plays well in the second half, Cairo could have a great chance of earning a long-term role in Washington.

Ryan Flaherty, Chicago Cubs Bench Coach

Flaherty has been with Craig Counsell in Chicago for the past two years and is becoming a name to watch out for in the 2026 off-season. Before heading to Chicago, he worked for the San Diego Padres as a development coach. Flaherty was even allowed to serve as the acting manager in 2022, as Bob Melvin suffered from COVID-19. Working under one of the best managers in baseball, Flaherty’s time to shine as a manager could be this upcoming off-season. He could bring a different feeling to Washington Nationals baseball.

He has been most rumored with the Baltimore Orioles; however, Washington has an interesting roster to work with and a solid farm system that could intrigue any manager to come to Washington.

Oliver Marmol, St. Louis Cardinals Manager

Marmol has been in St. Louis since 2022 and was hired at age 35, becoming one of the youngest managers in baseball. His career with St. Louis started with a bang, winning 93 games and making the playoffs. Since then, St. Louis has struggled, and fans are becoming eager to win baseball games. It seems that Marmol’s time in St. Louis could be coming to an end if St. Louis finishes with another disappointing record. Marmol could bring much-needed experience and could be a perfect fit for Marmol to regain credibility.

I believe the Marmol is handcuffed by John Mozeliak. In an article written by Josh Jacobs on FanSided, quotes are included that talk about an interesting situation with Eric Fedde still starting games in St. Louis. On KMOX, when asked if he wanted to start bullpen arms or even call up prospects, he said, “Um, yes… And I’m trying to figure out how honest to be publicly here… there’s a lot of people at the table to make that decision, okay?”

It might be an unpopular pick, but with the experience and the way he has handled being the manager of one of the historic franchises in baseball, I think he would be a great addition to the Washington Nationals coaching staff.

Mark DeRosa, Team USA Manager

DeRosa has been a popular pick for Nationals fans on who they want to be the next manager. DeRosa is a former player who played sixteen years in the MLB. He has been an MLB Network Analyst but has recently taken the manager position for Team USA in the WBC. He managed the team in 2023 when they lost the Japan in the finals. DeRosa has expressed interest in becoming an MLB manager, interviewing for the position with the New York Mets and Miami Marlins in recent years.

This would be a fun hire. I am with Nationals fans, I think this would be a slam dunk hire for Washington and would immediately improve this team heading into the future.

Final Opinion

The most realistic option, if he hits the open market, is Oliver Marmol, and I would like the decision. Marmol has been dealt a difficult hand in St. Louis, and with a new regime in Washington, things could turn around for the franchise. It all stems from: What will Washington do to become a better baseball team? The answer is simple; if they spend money in the correct places while prioritizing the young talent they have, they will become a great baseball team sooner rather than later.

MLB: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

Washington looks to try and even the series against the red hot Milwaukee Brewers.

Entering tonight’s game, Milwaukee has won five in a row and is in a tight race for the National League Central. Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals are trying to become one of the bottom teams in all of baseball. After the firing of Rizzo and Martinez, Washington is continuing to find their identity and start winning games. A win tonight would be a great one, and it would be a moral boost for the entire locker room.

The two bright spots in the lineup, James Wood and CJ Abrams, are leading things off for Washington. With a struggling lefty on the mound, Washington will need their offense to step up in a big way. Lile and House will be two names to watch for the late stretch of the season, as they continue to try and make a name for themselves.

MLB Draft: Is Landon Harmon the next Travis Sykora for the Washington Nationals

Syndication: The Clarion-Ledger

Hannah Mattix/Clarion Ledger / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Washington Nationals were looking for the next Travis Sykora and Landon Harmon could be that guy

The Washington Nationals are likely to save some money due to taking Eli Willits at one. That money is going to help make high school righty Landon Harmon a rich man. The Nats took Harmon, a top 50 talent in the draft with the 80th pick in the draft.

When looking at this pick, I can’t help but be reminded of what the Nats did back in 2023 with Travis Sykora. They selected Sykora with the 71st overall pick in 2023, but gave him $2.6 million, which was roughly top 35 pick money. It looks like the Nats will do something similar here with Harmon.

Harmon ranked as the 48th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. That is in a very similar range to Sykora, who was seen as the 40th best prospect in his draft year. Both are big right handed arms with massive velocity as well.

The Nats select RHP Landon Harmon with pick #80

Harmon is your Sykora pick.

Also deploys 55-grade slider and a 45-grade changeup

6’5 but still finds the zone routinely. Great extension. Let’s go baby pic.twitter.com/yYbUzOunrD

— Nats Of The Future (@NatsOfTheFuture) July 14, 2025

Right now the fastball is Harmon’s bread and butter. Pretty much every evaluator considers it a plus pitch, with some even saying it could be a plus-plus offering one day. It is in the mid to upper 90’s while having fantastic shape as well.

If you could design a fastball in a lab, it would look something like what Landon Harmon has. Like Sykora, he has surprisingly good control for a big, hard throwing high schooler. It is not perfect, but for a high schooler, it is quite advanced.

The biggest thing for Harmon is to find consistent secondary pitches. He has a solid slider which has two separate shapes. Harmon has one sweeping breaking ball in the low 80’s and a harder cutter like offering in the mid to high 80’s. They are solid and he has some feel to spin, but it sounds like a development team could help him fine tune those offerings a bit. The breaking stuff has a chance to be above average with development.

Harmon does not have much of a changeup, but as a pitcher who dominates with his fastball, he has not really needed one. We will see what the Nats do there.

Like Sykora, Harmon is a moldable ball of clay with front of the rotation upside if everything clicks. However, he is a player we will need to be patient with. I am fired up to watch his journey to the show unfold and welcome to DC Landon!

MLB Draft: Washington Nationals swing for upside on day 2

MLB: Draft

Brett Davis-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals are using the money they saved by picking Eli Willits number one overall

What the Nationals did in rounds three through five is why you do an under slot deal at the top. After taking Willits and Ethan Petry with their first two picks, the Nats took three straight high schoolers with massive upside. We talked about Landon Harmon last night, now it is time to talk about two more prepsters.

In the fourth and fifth round, the Nats took high schoolers Miguel Sime Jr. and Coy James. Both are likely to be players that require over slot deals. Sime and James were both considered top 100 players in the class, but were picked at 111th and 142nd respectively.

Sime the Fireballer:

Let’s start with the first pick the Nats made today, Miguel Sime. He is an 18 year old right handed pitcher out of New York. Sime was in the 80’s on Baseball America and MLB Pipeline’s board.

He is a huge kid with huge stuff. Sime is already 6’4 235 pounds despite only turning 18 in May. With that size, comes massive velocity. The right hander is already hitting triple digits on a regular basis and has a 70 grade fastball.

Miguel Sime Jr. (@TrentonThunder) struck out 11 over 8.2 innings this summer with an overall Whiff% of 36.1% and FB up to 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣+ mph.

: 97.9 mph (T100.9), 2275 rpm, 18.5” IVB, 9.0” HB
- 32.3% Whiff% / 28.9% Z-Whiff% / 32.3% Chase

: 81.1 mph, 2318 rpm, -13.5” IVB, -8.6”… https://t.co/Fuo9FAc1Y0 pic.twitter.com/8nTB8Ftblc

— MLB Draft League Data (@draftleaguedata) July 14, 2025

Sime Jr. has massive stuff but is still a project. His control is below average right now and evaluators are mixed on his secondary pitches. Most think his breaking ball can be at least average, but he has mostly relied on the fastball. As an 18 year old who throws 100, he probably has not needed to use his offspeed pitches much.

However, he will have to develop those. The ingredients for a solid breaking ball and Baseball America mentioned that his changeup has looked good at times. However, you are buying the fastball and hoping everything else works out.

His frame, velocity and control questions remind me of Jarlin Susana. There is reliever risk here, but guys who throw this hard do not grow on trees. He is committed to LSU, so an overslot deal is very likely.

Coy James, the Pure Hitter:

In the fifth round, the Nats took another massive swing with Coy James. This is a player that had real round one buzz. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel actually had him going to the Tigers at 24 in his last mock draft.

However, James fell due to his strong commitment to Ole Miss. With the Nats taking him in the fifth round, they must believe he is singable. James is likely to get a massive over slot deal that will pay him like a second round pick.

Coy James is a natural hitter who has performed on the showcase circuit for years. Baseball America has him inside their top 50, giving him a 55 grade hit tool. James also has at least average power to go with it. He has one of the better hit/power combinations in the draft. Despite being a shortstop right now, most feel like he will move over to either second or third base.

Nationals select Coy James, shortstop from North Carolina in the 5th round!
The Nationals savings from the Willits pick are showing up BIG time today. James had late first round buzz, great bat with 20 homer potentialpic.twitter.com/uKObmBhF68

— Paul Cubbage (@PaulCubbage23) July 14, 2025

MLB Pipeline was lower on him, but still had James at 94th on their board. They mentioned that he lost some athleticism after putting on muscle in the last year. Hopefully James can find the right balance in a professional setting with a strength and conditioning team.

James is not that far off from what Luke Dickerson was last year and should be a bit cheaper. Getting Harmon, Sime and James in round’s 3 to 5 is an epic haul. The Washington Nationals have done a great job navigating this draft and have really strengthened their prospect pool.

While Ronald Acuna Jr. pulled out for his teammate Matt Olson, this is still an awesome field. There is so much big time power on display. Guys like Oneil Cruz and Junior Caminero might not be megastars yet, but they have jaw dropping power. All of these guys can put on an absolute show.

Cal Raleigh has an insane 38 homers at the break and he leads the field along with Wood. Brent Rooker is another guy to watch. The A’s DH has been one of the more underrated power threats in the game over the last few years.

However, I think James has what it takes to get it done. His batting practice preparations have shown off the insane power he has. We see it in games all the time, but seeing him do it on the field in batting practice is just mesmerizing stuff.

How Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore became an All-Star

MLB: Game Two-Detroit Tigers at Washington Nationals

Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images

In 2025, MacKenzie Gore went from a talented but inconsistent arm to an All-Star ace for the Washington Nationals

Ever since MacKenzie Gore was the 2017 Gatorade National High School player of the year and put up some of the most insane stats you will ever see, evaluators knew he had the talent to become an ace. Gore went number three overall in the 2017 Draft and has been billed as a future ace for years.

The southpaw has taken a winding path, but eight years later, MacKenzie Gore is the ace he was always supposed to be. Gore had some peaks and valley’s as a Minor Leaguer in the Padres organization, but he eventually made it to the Big Leagues in 2022.

No More Summer Swoons:

Before this season, his MLB seasons have followed similar patterns. Gore always has a great start to the season, teasing fans into believing in him before fading after the first couple months. In March and April, Gore has a career ERA of 3.07. May is even better for the lefty, with a 2.80 ERA.

However, his career ERA in June is 4.68 and in July it is an ugly 6.98. This season, the summer months have not been a problem for Gore, even as the team around him crumbles. Gore was not a problem in the Nats miserable June, posting a 2.93 ERA in five starts. He has also been sharp in his first two starts of July, with a 2.38 ERA.

Sure, the strikeouts numbers have not been as eye popping lately, but Gore is still getting good results and doing a better job limiting hard contact. He was a deserving all star, with his 3.02 ERA and 2.91 FIP.

Gore is striking out more batters than ever and walking batters at a career low clip. His 11.26 K/9 is an exceptional number and his 2.85 BB/9 is also better than average. This is a pitcher who has taken his game to a new level. So let’s get into the nitty gritty and see what Gore has done.

White Castle Special:

MacKenzie Gore has had a ton of success with his breaking pitches this season. His curveball has been a very good pitch for a couple of years now and he has always had a slider/cutter pitch. However, he added a slider to combat left handed hitters and it has elevated his whole mix.

MacKenzie Gore, Filthy 88mph Slider...and Sword. ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/DHojiOHSpq

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 25, 2025

Last year, Gore threw a slider just 1.3% of the time. This year he is throwing it 12.4% of the time. It is a pitch he almost exclusively throws to left handed hitters. Gore has thrown 229 sliders to lefties and just 2 to righties.

He is actually using his slider more than any other pitch against lefties, firing it in there 45.5% of the time against them. Even with the heavy usage, the pitch is wildly successful. Left handed hitters are batting just .117 against the slide piece. They are 7/60 with 27 strikeouts against the offering. Here he is carving up Juan Soto with three straight sliders.

MacKenzie Gore, White Castle Special. pic.twitter.com/8sUgZWlYV3

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 10, 2025

Last year, Gore used mainly a fastball, cutter, curve mix against lefties. Only the curveball was particularly effective, but he does not like throwing it to lefties as much as righties. However, this year he has an out pitch to control left handed hitters. He also mixes in the curveball to devastating effect when he needs to.

His mix against right handed hitters is quite similar to last year. Gore throws a lot of heaters, while using his wipeout curveball as his primary secondary pitch. He will also show righties a changeup and a cutter. Those pitches have flashes and they are really nice when he executes them. However, they are not as consistent. Gore has not changed too much of what he does against righties because it has worked for him.

Whiff Machine:

This season MacKenzie Gore has been a monster when it comes to generating whiffs. His ability to get swing and miss on a regular basis is why he is an All-Star. All four of Gore’s secondary pitches have a whiff% north of 40% which is insane.

Gore has a very good fastball too. While his velocity is actually down from 96 MPH to 95.3 MPH, the heater still has plenty of steam. Gore cut his fastball usage by about 5%, but is still throwing it just over 50% of the time.

The heater sets up all his other pitches and allows them to shine. It has good, but not elite whiff numbers, but it is the pitch everything else works off of. Hitters fear his hard fastball, which has very good shape as well.

Overall, Gore has a 31.7% whiff rate, a 31.9% chase rate and a 30.5% K rate. Those numbers are all in the 86th percentile or better among all pitchers. Among qualified starters, Gore is 6th in K%, 4th in whiff% and 10th in out of zone swing%.

This is what makes MacKenzie Gore an All-Star level ace. He is an elite swing and miss artist that gets hitters to chase at his pitches constantly. Gore has always had this in him, but he has finally found the recipe this season.

A combination of a refined pitch mix and a greater maturity on the mound has allowed Gore to reach his potential. It is a joy to watch him every fifth day even if it is frustrating to see the lack of run support he gets. I can’t wait to see MacKenzie show off his arsenal in the All-Star game tonight.

How the Washington Nationals can get back on track

MLB: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

Benny Sieu-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals have struggled mightily the last six weeks, here is how they can stabilize the ship

Since June 1st, the Washington Nationals have been the worst team in baseball. Their 10-28 record since June began is even worse than the Colorado Rockies. It has been a miserable run that has gotten the coach and GM fired. While the 2025 Washington Nationals are not a good baseball team, they have too much talent to be this bad. Here is what they need to do to right the ship.

Pitching Needs to be Better:

The pitching staff has been a massive disappointment this year. Outside of MacKenzie Gore, Brad Lord and Kyle Finnegan, things have been ugly. The Nats have a team ERA of 5.21, the second worst in all of baseball.

Early on in the season, the bullpen was historically bad but the rotation was a bright spot. Well now the rotation is very bad as well. The bullpen ERA is the worst in all of baseball at 5.88 and outside of MacKenzie Gore, the rotation has been bad as well.

Guys like Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker were expected to build off of solid 2024 seasons. However, both have regressed. Irvin has not been a disaster, but he is an innings eating number 5 starter being asked to be the number 2 in the rotation. He has a 4.58 ERA and his drop in velocity has seen his strikeout numbers regress.

After a red hot start to the season, Parker has been really bad. His ERA sits at 5.12 and in his last 15 starts that number is over six. Right now Parker is not performing like a guy who belongs in a big league rotation.

While Michael Soroka has shown some interesting flashes, his ERA is over 5 as well. He looks better suited to a bullpen role, as he tends to run out of stamina after the fifth inning. Trevor Williams was also very bad before going down with injury.

The starting rotation was supposed to be solid for the Washington Nationals. However, it has been a problem and a big reason why the team is losing games. Too often, the starting pitchers are just not giving the team any chance to win.

Clean Up the Fundamentals:

The other biggest issue I have with this team is the lack of fundamentals. This team just does not play a good brand of baseball. There are too many mental mistakes and errors. The Nationals are top 10 in errors and top five in being caught stealing.

That is an ugly combination that shows a level of sloppiness. When watching the team, it is clear to see the lack of fundamentals in their game. It is easy to see why this team got their manager fired.

On the fielding side of things, the advanced numbers are just as bad as the more traditional metrics. The Nats are bottom five in defensive runs saved at -28. The infield is particularly ugly, with guys like Nathaniel Lowe, Luis Garcia Jr. and CJ Abrams grading out quite negatively.

— Thomas Nestico (@TJStats) July 11, 2025

Find Ways to Win:

This is not a great baseball team, but they are doing things to underperform their talent level. Instead of finding ways to win, the Washington Nationals are finding ways to lose. We saw that in Milwaukee and really we have been seeing it throughout this miserable 10-28 run.

The team is on pace to go 64-98 and has a real chance to lose 100 games. That would be an utter embarrassment. While the playoffs were always a pipe dream, the Nationals were expected to improve this year and potentially flirt with a .500 record.

I predicted 75 wins before the season. That is looking way too high at he moment. It will be a battle to even get to the 71-91 mark they have sat at the last two seasons. While this season is all but over and the Nats are 20 games under .500, the players need to show some pride here.

The pitchers need to perform and the team needs to play fundamentally sound baseball. Nationals fans have been through a lot these last five years and are desperate for a good team. It is on the players to give fans a reason to be excited heading into 2026. So far, 2025 has been one of the more disappointing seasons in Nats history and expectations were not even that high.

Washington Nationals vs New York Yankees Game Thread

After yet another sloppy showing, the Nationals are looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Yankees. Last night, they struggled with runners in scoring position and made some base running blunders. Hopefully they can play a clean game this afternoon.

With a lefty on the mound, the Nats are switching things up a bit. Andres Chaparro will get the start at first base. Miguel Cairo will give Riley Adams the start at DH, with the manager wanting to keep his hot bat in the lineup. Drew Millas will start behind the plate. Luis Garcia Jr. will start even with a lefty on the mound. Cade Cavalli will get the start as the Nats look to salvage something.

With a righty on the mound, the Yankees will put Ben Rice and Jasson Dominguez back in the lineup. Ryan McMahon will also replace Amed Rosario at third base. Veteran Paul Goldschmidt will sit on the bench. As will last night’s hero Giancarlo Stanton, who can’t DH due to Aaron Judge’s elbow injury. Yankees ace Max Fried will be on the mound.

Should Jarlin Susana get a shot in the Washington Nationals rotation

gettyimages-2115791169.jpg

The struggles of Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker have been well documented at this point. It is obvious that the Washington Nationals need new blood in their rotation sooner rather than later. However, thanks to injuries and a lack of depth, the options are limited. There is one trump card though, and his name is Jarlin Susana.

We have been writing about the burly right hander a lot lately, and for good reason. It seems like he does something special every start in Double-A. He did that again last night. Susana faced the stacked Erie SeaWolves for a second straight start and dominated again. He struck out 10 and allowed one run over five innings.

Jarlin Susana dominated a tough Erie lineup today:

5 IP
2 H
1 ER
3 BB
10 K

Our #37 prospect has been lights-out in his two starts this week.
pic.twitter.com/2qJRsqtYOU

— The Call Up | An MLB Prospect Podcast (@The_CallUpPod) August 24, 2025

Facing a lineup full of top prospects, Susana’s overpowering stuff was just too much for them. His fastball was sitting 100-102 MPH and the scouts that were there said his slider was even better last night.

However, there was one pitch that really made my jaw drop and could help him take his game to the next level. Susana got a whiff on an insane 94 MPH changeup. Yes, I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but for him 94 MPH is taking something off. It had ridiculous movement and the hitter had no chance.

Nationals' RHP Jarlin Susana throws a 100-102 mph fastball. His 85-87 mph slider was better than his fastball today.

And then he broke out this. pic.twitter.com/BUKLo3YgM3

— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36) August 25, 2025

It looked like one of those Jhoan Duran or Paul Skenes splinkers. If he can consistently throw that thing as well as his fastball and slider, hitters have no chance. Even if he walks more guys than you would like, he would be so un-hittable that it would not matter too much.

So with that in mind, should the Nationals call up Susana. Well, I am conflicted personally. My head says that it would be better to let him see out the season in the minors. Give him a promotion to Triple-A and let him finish the year there. After all, he is only 21 years old and his control is not exactly pinpoint. Even last night, he walked three guys in five innings.

However, the fan in me wants to see Susana. Even with his flaws, I am pretty convinced he would be better at getting MLB hitters out then Mitchell Parker or Jake Irvin. Those guys are just so much more hittable. It would also be so exciting to see a guy pumping 102 MPH heaters, 94 MPH changeups and a slider that might be the best of the three pitches.

It would make the last month of the season so much more fun and enjoyable. However, it is not Mike DeBartolo’s job to entertain the fans, it is to do what is best for the team. If he thinks Susana is better served in the minors, that is fine by me and makes sense.

At the very least, I would like to see him make a few starts in AAA. It would be good preparation for 2026 for Susana. He will be facing more high quality hitters with better approaches. A lot of Triple-A guys are former big leaguers after all.

However, one thing that could make you want to call up Susana is the injury factor. We should not be wasting any of Susana’s bullets in the minors if we don’t have to. Guys like Travis Sykora and DJ Herz have gone down with Tommy John this year. It is a reminder of how quickly things can change in the life of a pitcher.

Susana has already had an elbow injury this season, so you hold your breath a bit every time he is out there. However, he has come back even better since the injury. I just want as many of those bullets to be fired at the MLB level where he is making the big league team better.

At the end of the day, I would be fine with either decision. Susana’s stuff is good enough where he would probably be able to at least hold his own even if he is still a raw talent. Even in 2025, you don’t see a ton of guys with that kind of power stuff. It is even more rare to see a guy hold 100-102 MPH velocity deep into games like Susana does.

However, if the Nationals brass don’t think he is ready, they should keep him in the minors. There are real flaws in Susana’s game, even if his stuff is high octane enough to cover them up for now. My heart tells me to give Susana the call to the big leagues straight from Double-A. However, my head tells me to let him finish out the season in Triple-A and compete for a job next spring training.

Washington Nationals Head To The Bronx Looking To Play Spoiler

gettyimages-2230946673.jpg

After taking game one of the series in Philadelphia in comeback style, the Nationals dropped the final 2 games of the series 4-6 and 2-3, ending their 10-game stand against NL East opponents at a respectable 5-5. Since the return of Dylan Crews to the lineup, the team has played with a different sort of edge, not only winning more often, but losing in much closer fashion, only getting blown out once in 10 games against the 2 best teams in their division. They will look to keep this momentum alive as they head on the road to play the New York Yankees, who have struggled in the month of August, posting a 10-11 record and coming off a series loss at home to their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees go as Aaron Judge goes, and since his return from injury, Judge has not looked like the most feared hitter in baseball that many know him as, posting a .690 OPS in his last 7 games, and a .813 OPS in his last 30 games, a respectable number for most hitters, but not when your OPS sits around 1.100 most years. The Nationals have done a solid job in recent years of limiting Judge’s damage against them, as in 16 career games against the Nats, he is hitting .226 with 4 home runs, 3 coming in one game in August of 2023. While Judge is the heart and soul of their lineup, the rest of the order is as strong as any other unit in baseball, with 4 other qualified hitters registering OPSs over .800. One of those players, a name Nats fans are very familiar with, is center fielder Trent Grisham, who, in his last 7 games, has 4 home runs and an OPS of .956.

Despite losing their ace, Gerrit Cole, for the season due to a torn UCL in March, the Yankees’ starting rotation has been one of the better units in baseball in 2025, with their 3.84 starters’ ERA ranking 10th in MLB. They are led by free agent acquisition Max Fried, wh0’s 3.14 ERA is best on the staff, and veteran Carlos Rodon, but have been receiving quality innings from their young arms, including Will Warren, Clarke Schmidt, and Cam Schlittler. Their bullpen, despite the lackluster 4.29 ERA, is an incredibly strong unit, as they beefed it up at the trade deadline with the acquisitions of David Bednar from the Pirates and Camilo Doval from the Yankees.

Team Stats

Team OPS: .782 (1st in AL, 1st in MLB)

Team OPS Leader: Aaron Judge (1.108)

Team HR Leader: Aaron Judge (40)

Team ERA: 4.02 (9th in AL, 17th in MLB)

Team ERA Leader: Max Fried (3.14)

Game One – Monday 7:05 PM EST

WSH: RHP Brad Lord (4-6) – 96.1 IP, 3.46 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

Lord was cruising to another quality start last time out before the Mets’ bats finally got to him in the 6th inning, ending his day with 5 1/3 innings pitched and 4 runs allowed. Lord’s been the face of consistency for the Nats in 2025, posting a 2.63 ERA in his last 30 games, 6 of those being starts, but he now faces his toughest test yet against the best lineup in baseball on the road.

NYY: RHP Cam Schlittler (1-2) – 36.1 IP, 3.22 ERA, 1.32 WHIP

Schlittler made his big league debut on July 9th for the Yankees and has looked like a complete veteran ever since, not allowing more than 3 runs in any of his first 7 big league starts. He’s coming off the best start of his big league career last time out, a 6 2/3 innings, 8 strikeout, scoreless performance in one of the most offense-friendly parks in baseball at Steinbrenner Field, temporary home of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Game Two – Tuesday 7:05 PM EST

WSH: LHP MacKenzie Gore (5-12) – 142.1 IP, 4.11 ERA, 1.35 WHIP

After back-to-back strong starts against the Giants and Phillies, Gore struggled in his last start against the Mets, going just 4 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs and, most concerningly, walking 4 batters. The strikeout stuff was there as always, but he needs to learn to avoid the occasional blowup outings he has if he wants to prevent his ERA from ballooning up above where he should be.

NYY: RHP Luis Gil (1-1) – 19 IP, 4.26 ERA, 1.68 WHIP

Last year’s AL Rookie of the Year, Gil made his season debut on August 3rd and has continued to ramp up since, going 5 or more innings in his last 3 starts now. The results aren’t quite there yet for him, but the talent is there, and the numbers will improve as he returns to 100% health.

Game Three – Wednesday 1:05 PM EST

WSH: RHP Cade Cavalli (1-0) – 22.1 IP, 2.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP

Cavalli was so close to getting through 6 innings of 1-run ball in his last start against the Phillies before Bryson Stott got him for a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the 5th, but even then, it was still another impressive performance for him in his 4th start of 2025. He will now have to take on another high-powered offense in the Yankees, where limiting free passes needs to be a major goal.

NYY: LHP Max Fried (13-5) – 155 IP, 3.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP

A familiar face from his time in Atlanta, Fried has continued to pitch like one of the best lefties in baseball since his move to the Bronx, including a 6-inning scoreless performance against the Red Sox in his last start. The Nationals have hit Fried harder than most teams have in his career, as he owns a 3.97 career ERA against them, including giving up 4 runs over 6 innings to them in September last year.

Can The Nats Sprint Through The Finish Line?

The Nationals are near the end of one of the most brutal parts of their schedule all year, but it hasn’t stopped them from looking like a competitive club, as they’ve clawed their way back to win some big games and even stuck around in games they had no business sticking around in. They will now look to do it against a team playing rather sloppy baseball lately, but with playoff hopes in the New York Yankees. Can the Nationals take advantage of their mistakes, or will the sheer firepower of the Yankees’ lineup and pitching staff win over? Comment your thoughts down below and let’s go Nats!

Playing in the Bronx is always a little different. There is more juice and excitement when you square off against baseball’s most historical team. The Nats have come off two hard fought series against the Phillies and a series win against the Mets. If the Yanks aren’t careful, the scrappy Nats could surprise them.

Interestingly, Daylen Lile is out of the Nats lineup for a second straight game. Manager Miguel Cairo said it was due to an illness. Without him, James Wood, Jacob Young and Dylan Crews make up the outfield. Robert Hassell III will DH. Brady House will get the day off, with Paul DeJong playing third base. After a pinch hit homer, Luis Garcia Jr. returns to the lineup. Riley Adams will be catching Brad Lord.

While the Yankees are not playing their best ball, the lineup is scary. Aaron Judge is the main man and he will be DH’ing. A big story is shortstop Anthony Volpe’s struggles on both sides of the ball. He will be on the bench today. The versatile Ben Rice is one to watch behind the plate. Rookie Cam Schlittler will pitch.

A new coaching staff can’t come fast enough for the Washington Nationals

gettyimages-2230206224.jpg

We all know it, but games like last nights really show how badly the Washington Nationals need a full scale coaching overhaul. At all levels, this is a poorly coached team. From hitting to pitching to defense to base running, this team does not do the little things. That reared its ugly head last night against the Yankees, who themselves have been criticized for a lack of fundamentals.

However, last night the Bronx Bombers looked like the more fundamentally sound team. They ran the bases well, didn’t make any mistakes in the field and played an overall clean game. The Nationals did the opposite.

The most inexplicable moment came when Josh Bell tried to steal second base and was thrown out by a mile. With guys on first and third, maybe the runner on third was supposed to take off from home, but they did not. This kind of thing has happened multiple times this year where plodders like Josh Bell or Nathaniel Lowe are inexplicably trying to steal bases.

Josh Bell tries to catch Ben Rice sleeping but Rice makes a nice throw to end the inning#MLB #baseball #catcher #yankees pic.twitter.com/9sJJfryzui

— Catcher Center (@Catcher_Center) August 26, 2025

How has this coaching staff realized that this does not work? We have seen it fail about five times this season now. Is it the base coaches calling for this or is it the manager? Whoever it is, can we please stop doing it.

Speaking of base coaches, the Nationals had a very good one on their hands but decided to let him go. After the 2023 season, first base coach Eric Young Jr. was the only coach let go. He was replaced by 2019 hero and Davey Martinez ally Gerardo Parra. Since then, the base running has clearly suffered. The Nats led the league in caught stealing last season and are third this year.

After 2023, Young moved on to the Mariners, where he has done a very good job. This season, the Mariners have 24 more steals than the Nats while being caught 10 fewer times. It is not like the Mariners have a more athletic team. The Nationals average team sprint speed ranks 12th in baseball while the Mariners rank 23rd.

Obviously, that is not all on the base coaches, but they play a role. There is a reason that the rotund Josh Naylor has now turned into a stolen base threat in Seattle. Mariners fans seem very happy with Young and how the base running has improved under his watch.

Eric Young Jr. Might be the greatest first base coach of all time

— Konjac Jelly (@_Konjac_Jelly) August 7, 2025

However, it is not just the base paths where the Nationals are poorly coached. For years, Nationals fans have been furious with Darnell Coles. Under his leadership, the team is consistently among the league leaders in ground balls. There also just seems to be a lack of a plan at the plate for so many hitters.

One problem that has really emerged is the Nationals star players being unable to sustain first half success. I think a lot of that is down to coaching. This spring, the Washington Post wrote stories about CJ Abrams and James Wood. Both heavily featured their hitting instructors from outside the organization.

Whoever the next gm is for the nats needs to come up with a well explained presentation on how to make sure all of our baseball players don’t turn into lemons in the second half this is like the third year in a row of this nonsense

— mutt 🪼 (@Iletmykpop) August 25, 2025

Coming into the season, both Abrams and Wood were well prepared and ready to roll. With their offseason training, they were at their best early in the season. Abrams had an .836 OPS in the first half while Wood had an incredible .915 OPS.

However, as pitchers have made adjustments, Wood and Abrams have been unable to keep up in the second half. Both have an OPS below .640 for the second half, with Wood struggling particularly badly with strikeouts. As the instructions from their private coaches are drowned out by the words of the team hitting coaches, it seems like our young stars regress.

It is not just the young players though. Both Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Bell had a big chunk of their seasons derailed by searching for power. They got away from who they were as hitters and it cost them. As Bell went away from that power oriented approach, he became more successful.

It is still very early days for Nathaniel Lowe in Boston, but so far it looks like he has benefitted from a new environment. He has come out red hot in Boston, though the sample size is very small. One thing I have noticed from the clips I have seen is how he looks way more ready for high velocity. In DC, he was constantly late for fastballs, now he looks ready for upper 90’s heat.

Nathaniel Lowe in 6 games since joining the Red Sox

— Jake “Iggy” Ignaszewski (@JakeIggy) August 25, 2025

It is possible that Lowe had a simple timing issue that a good hitting coach quickly fixed. That is just a theory though. It is also possible that Lowe was simply reinvigorated by getting away from all the losing in DC.

However, with Kyle Finnegan, it is more obvious that specific changes have helped him find a new gear. As is the case for a lot of Nats pitchers, Finnegan was throwing a ton of fastballs in DC. He threw his heater over 65% of the time. We wrote about how Nationals pitchers are throwing too many fastballs earlier this season.

That was certainly the case with Finnegan. Since joining the Tigers, he has yet to allow a run and his strikeout numbers have exploded. Even when Finnegan was doing well with the Nats, the strikeout numbers were not like what they are in Detroit.

Pitch usage is a big part of that. Finnegan is throwing his fastball and splitter about the same amount. He is also mixing in a slider occasionally. This change has really helped him and has made him a weapon in the Tigers bullpen.

Kyle Finnegan as a National: 4.38 ERA, 19.6% K-rate, 8.6% BB-rate, 65.7% fastball, 29.6% splitter

Kyle Finnegan as a Tiger: 0.00 ERA, 33.3% K-rate, 5.6% BB-rate, 48.1% fastball, 46.7% splitter pic.twitter.com/D5SeNyFsFZ

— Min Sub (Mitchell) (@MinSub4) August 25, 2025

It is quite frustrating to have a team mismanaged this badly. Not only is it not fun to watch, but it makes it a lot harder to evaluate players. Are some of these underperforming players actually diamonds in the rough that are being wasted by a bad coaching staff or are they just not good enough. Sometimes it can be hard to tell.

When CJ Abrams, James Wood and MacKenzie Gore all fall off cliffs in the second half, is that just who those guys are as players or are they victims of an incompetent coaching staff? As always, there is room for nuance and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

It is critical that the new GM, whether that is Mike DeBartolo or someone else, brings in a new coaching staff with a new philosophy. The current way of thinking in the Nationals dugout is not working. In many ways, the Nationals methods are antiquated and past their sell by dates.

It is obvious that the Washington Nationals are a team that is being held back by their coaching staff. The only question is how much are the coaches holding our players back?

Will the real James Wood please stand up?

gettyimages-2231661770.jpg

Since a 5/5 day against the Detroit Tigers on July 3rd, the James Wood we knew and loved in the first half of the season has been missing. The insane raw power has been muted by a barrage of strikeouts that could lead to the young slugger setting the single season record for punch outs.

It has been a sharp fall from grace for the young star who is experiencing how hard the big leagues are for the first time. Since the All-Star break, Wood has struck out 41.8% of the time and has a 69 wRC+. Even in today’s strikeout heavy environment, that is just too much to overcome, especially for a guy who also hits his fair share of ground balls.

Another disturbing detail is that his plate discipline has also been muted. Since the break, Wood has a 7.5% walk rate, compared to a 14% walk rate in the first half. Strikeout rates in the 30s can be somewhat tolerated if you walk enough to make up for those missed opportunities to get on base.

That was what Wood was doing in the first half. Through Wood’s first 90 games of the season, his strikeout rate was at a fairly high, but manageable 26.1%. As a big guy with long levers, the strikeouts will always be a part of his game. However, when it is at 26%, that is fine. Through July 4th, Wood was a superstar and MVP candidate. However, as the K’s have piled up, he has lost some of that shine.

James Wood Is A Top 10 Player At Just 22-Years-Old pic.twitter.com/8BxU46PFRZ

— Running From The OPS (@OPS_BASEBALL) July 4, 2025

So what has happened to our young slugger? Well, simply put, pitchers have adjusted and he has not been able to keep up. Teams have identified Wood’s weaknesses and have been exploiting them.

While Wood is a patient hitter, it has turned to passivity. Teams know that they can just get free strikes early and often. Wood simply does not swing at enough strikes. His swing percentage on pitches in the zone is 54%. Even Juan Soto, an ultra patient hitter, swings at pitches in the zone at a 58.2% clip for his career, while chasing far less.

The best at combining patience and aggression is Corey Seager. He is actually so good at this, they named a stat after him that measures how much you swing in the zone vs how much you chase. The best at this swing a lot in the zone and don’t chase a lot. Foolish Baseball did a great video on this.

As you would expect, Seager is at the top of the list in this category. Seager is one of the most aggressive hitters on pitches in the strike zone while chasing less than the average hitter. It is an insane combination. To get to the next level, Wood needs to turn his passive approach into a selectively aggressive one.

Wood is taking a lot of the good pitches to hit early in the count and sometimes even with two strikes. His habit of striking out looking is very frustrating. Even when he was going well, it was something he did quite a bit.

Another thing pitchers have caught on to is that Wood struggles with breaking balls out of the zone and fastball inside. Due to his opposite field tendencies and long levers, Wood likes the ball out over the plate. If a pitcher can execute it under his hands, it gives Wood fits.

James Wood is slashing .184/.287/.289 since July 1
In July chasing breaking + 6%, offspeed + 11%, FB + 3% more than June

His in zone swing and miss has also skyrocketed: FB +11%, offspeed + 23%, breaking + 15%

His chase miss FB% is +14%

However, this can be a risky strategy. If you miss your spot even by a little bit, Wood is sending the ball into orbit. He can hit some insane home runs against fastballs middle-in. Even in his slump, he showed that when he hammered a Ryne Stanek fastball that did not get far enough inside.

However, breaking balls have become a safer way to get him out. This season, Wood is hitting .187 against breaking balls and whiffs 44.3% of the time against them. While most hitters are better against fastballs, his splits are dramatic. He has been slightly better in August against spin, but in July he was whiffing over half the time against breaking balls.

To be fair to Wood, he has shown some signs of life in August. His OPS is at a mediocre but not awful .699 mark. Wood has 10 extra base hits this month, which is a strong number, though only two of them are home runs.

However, the strike out and walk numbers are still not pretty. He is striking out 39.2% of the time and only walking 6.2% this month. That is not a sustainable path to success, and he knows that.

You cannot tell the story of this collapse without mentioning the coaching staff either. We wrote about the overall incompetence of the group this morning, and it is obvious that this is affecting Wood. Darnell Coles is not the guy to fix James Wood’s swing. As we have discussed over and over, Coles’ philosophy is outdated and does not get the best out of hitters in 2025.

It is disturbing how few adjustments we have seen from Wood in this stretch. Some of that is on him, but after all, he is just 22 and is being allowed to drown by this coaching staff.

However, one thing about Wood’s game that has frustrated me lately is the lack of hustle. On multiple occasions recently, Wood has not been running hard down the line. That double play against the Phillies the other day was a prime example of that. The struggles have clearly gone to Wood’s head and have discouraged them.

It makes total sense. He is a young player who is struggling for the first time on a team with a losing culture and no accountability. I would be discouraged and frustrated if I were in his position as well. However, to be a star player and face of a franchise, you have to be able to overcome that stuff and lead. At just 22 years old, Wood is early in his maturation process and hopefully he can learn from this.

Overall, James Wood is still an electric talent with an MVP ceiling. However, he is further from reaching that ceiling and there is a higher risk he falls short than we previously thought. He will be a very good player for a long time, but there are some things he needs to clean up before he can be truly great. The talent is there, but can he make the adjustments necessary to become one of the game’s great players? Only time will tell.

MLB News: Washington Nationals announce their 2026 schedule

Well, it is time to look towards 2026, at least a little bit. The Washington Nationals 2026 schedule has arrived. We can now map out what the road ahead looks like for what is hopefully a more successful season.

2026 MLB schedule is out.

Nats open March 26 at Cubs, home opener April 3 vs Dodgers, July 4 vs Pirates, end first half vs Yankees, open second half in Sacramento, end season vs Mets. pic.twitter.com/xup2NzK0Wm

One thing that stands out right away is how difficult the start is. The Cubs, Phillies and Dodgers are the first three matchups. All of those teams should be in the playoffs this year.

In the Davey Martinez era, the team tended to get off to lethargic starts. If they don’t come ready to play out of the gates, they could be in a deep hole before we know it. Hopefully the team will be reenergized with a new manager.

The home opener being against the Dodgers is very exciting. Should be a packed house to see a new look Nats squad face off against the biggest stars in the sport. The Nats have actually held their own against the Dodgers in recent years.

One thing that gives me PTSD is the Nats playing the Marlins and Rockies back to back. That was the run in June where the Nationals season truly went off the rails. It was during that long losing streak and was when Davey Martinez gave the infamous “it’s never on coaching” line. Hopefully that goes better this year.

It is exciting to look ahead and see a new beginning. This has not been an easy season for the Nats, but there is always next year. With the schedule coming out, next year is closer than you think.

New York Yankees vs Washington Nationals Game Thread

After a tough loss yesterday, the Nats are back in action in the Bronx. A ninth inning fake comeback made the score closer than the game was. The Nats need to respond and not bend the knee to the Bronx Bombers.

Daylen Lile remains absent due to his illness. The rest of the lineup is similar to last night. However, Brady House will replace Paul DeJong at third base. Robert Hassell and Dylan Crews will swap positions, with the former LSU star moving to DH for the night. Otherwise it is the same lineup. MacKenzie Gore will take the mound for the Nats.

The Yankees will make some tweaks with a lefty on the mound. Old friend Amed Rosario is in the lineup, playing third base. Paul Goldschmidt will hit leadoff, as he has been extremely productive against left handed pitching. With Aaron Judge nursing an elbow injury, the lumbering Giancarlo Stanton will play right field. The struggling Anthony Volpe will also return to the Yankees lineup. Luis Gil will be on the mound.

The Washington Nationals are a base running disaster

gettyimages-2231564986.jpg

The Nationals making boneheaded decisions on the bases feels like a daily occurrence at this point. Yesterday, the Nationals made two bizarre outs on the bases. Nats fans are sadly just used to this at this point because that has been the norm for two seasons now.

Heading into 2024, the Washington Nationals made ultra-aggressive base running a big part of their strategy. For the first month, it worked like a charm. In April of 2024, the Nats stole an insane 53 bases while being caught just 10 times. That is monster volume with good efficiency.

However, as the year went on teams figured out how to handle the Nats stolen base attack. From May onwards, the Nats were getting caught an insane 37% of the time on the bases. The worst of this came in June of 2024, when the Nats got caught 19 times and only stole 18 bases. In 2024, the Nats led the league in caught stealing and times picked off.

So heading into 2025, the Nats decided to be less aggressive. They are ninth in steals instead of 1st this year. However, they are still third in caught stealing and tied for second in times picked off. For a team that has a small margin for error, these outs on the bases are unacceptable.

With the lack of aggression this year, the Nats are taking the extra base less often. Last year, they were sixth in extra base taken percentage, but have fallen to the bottom 10 this year. So they are making outs on the bases without reaping the benefits of aggressive base running.

That low-IQ base running was on full display last night. In the first inning, CJ Abrams got a base hit. However, he ended the inning when he got caught in no man’s land and was back picked by Austin Wells.

For the second straight night, a Nats baserunner was picked off at first base. This time it's CJ Abrams to end the first inning after he singled off the right field wall.

— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) August 26, 2025

There were warning signs, including a close pickoff earlier in the inning. However, Abrams and first base coach Gerardo Parra seemed totally unaware of the threat that faced them. This has been a common theme ever since Parra took over as first base coach in 2024. Parra will always be beloved for his role as the Baby Shark in the 2019 run, but his work as a base coach has left a lot to be desired.

On the other side of the diamond, Ricky Gutierrez did not have a good night either. Early in the game, Gutierrez gave mixed signals to Robert Hassell III. At first he was waving Hassell around, but put up a late stop sign. Hassell ran through the stop sign and scored, but a good throw would have had him at the plate.

Looking at replay, Gutierrez was waving Hassell home until he touched third. Then, he put up a very late stop sign but Hassell kept going.

— Andrew Golden (@andrewcgolden) August 26, 2025

Later in the game, Gutierrez sent James Wood home on a play that was not even close. It was a one hop single to the left fielder that was an obvious hold. However, Gutierrez sent James Wood home and he was out by about 15 feet.

nats really aggressive there! pic.twitter.com/kIexdG5Dzt

— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) August 27, 2025

This is not the first time Gutierrez has had a rough night against the Yankees. Last year against the Bronx Bombers, Gutierrez abandoned his post on an insane double play. While Nationals runners were stuck in no-man’s land, Gutierrez had his back turned to the play.

This is inexcusable

Ricky Gutierrez was literally not doing his job here pic.twitter.com/ffNfsEj3Ce

— Kev (@klwoodjr) August 29, 2024

The bad base running is just another example of how poorly coached this team really is. The offseason cannot come soon enough because every game these players are just getting bad, losing habits engrained every single day. While keeping this staff around for the rest of the season after Davey Martinez got fired was the easy decision, it was not the correct one.

This coaching staff is actively hurting the team on all levels. The new coaching staff is going to have to start from scratch. They need to teach these guys the fundamentals because that has not been happening in DC for a while now.
