Nationals News: Nats drop new City Connect uniforms

Gmuvs13aoAAKUjO.0.jpg

The replacements for the famous Cherry Blossom jersey’s are finally here

The Washington Nationals Cherry Blossom City Connect uniforms were widely praised, but after three seasons the Nats are launching a new City Connect uniform. In my humble opinion, they look pretty cool.

— MLB (@MLB) March 23, 2025

The blue uniforms are a new look and are an interesting option. I personally like the DC Metro map on the jersey. The hat still has a hint of the old Cherry Blossom aesthetic with the two little flowers on them.

Interestingly, Dylan Crews was front and center on the Nationals post announcing them. Since Juan Soto has left, the Nats really have not had a face of the franchise. However, they have a lot of young up and comers to choose from now. The three they showed were Crews, CJ Abrams and Mackenzie Gore.

I think the jersey’s are a solid new look. While the Cherry Blossoms were a cool look, not a whole lot of winning was going on in them. Hopefully these threads can be the start of a new era.

Washington Nationals play in final tune up game

The Nationals take on the O’s in DC in the final game before Opening Day

The Washington Nationals are playing their last game before they count today. They have headed back up north to take on the Baltimore Orioles in an exhibition. This is a fun moment for the two local franchises who’s relationship is now improved following the MASN settlement.

The Nats are going to be running out something that resembles their Opening Day lineup. These should be the players that are in the lineup, but the batting order might change.

Here’s the lineup for today’s exhibition game between the Orioles and Nationals: pic.twitter.com/NQlPmRDc44

— Andrew Golden (@andrewcgolden) March 24, 2025

On the mound, the Nationals are going to send out Jake Irvin. The right handers velocity was down over two ticks in his last time out, so I will be looking at the radar gun closely. He has also yet to really integrate his new slider into his arsenal.

It is also very exciting to see the boys back at Nationals Park. The Nats have not played a game on home turf since September 29th, when they played the Phillies.

A peculiar thing about this lineup is Luis Garcia Jr. in the 8 hole. The second baseman was arguably the Nats best hitter last year, so seeing him that low in the lineup is a surprise. Hopefully he will be hitting higher in the lineup once the real season starts.

I am very excited to see Nats baseball back in the Nations Capital, and i’m so ready for this 162 game journey. This game starts at 1:05 EST and will be live on MASN. The radio call will be on 106.7 The Fan.

Nationals Broadcaster and legend Bob Carpenter announces his retirement

commencement_speaker_bob_carpenter.0.jpg

Bob Carpenter has been a fixture of Nationals baseball since its inception, but this will be his last year

Bob Carpenter has been a fixture in the lives of Washington Nationals fans ever since 2006. Most probably assume that Bob was the only play by play guy in Nats history. However, the 72 year old announced Yesterday that this will be his last season in the booth. See you later Bob, we wish you all the best moving forward.

We had a pretty good feeling that this was coming for a while now. Bob has had a lighter workload in recent years. With the Nationals likely moving off of MASN, this feels like the time for a new era in the broadcast booth.

As the season unfolds, we will remember Bob’s career and look back on some of his greatest calls. Bob was the epitome of consistency on the call. He was not much of a screamer, but he did not have to be. He has such a great voice for TV and an immense knowledge of the game.

One thing I hope Bob keeps around in some capacity are his scorebooks. They have become a fixture of his online presence. While he won’t be watching every Nats game going forward, I hope we can see some scorebooks of his online!

Hopefully the Nats honor Bob in the way he deserves as well. He truly is a legend of the franchise and deserves to be in the ring of honor. Kids like me grew up hanging to every word of his, and now as a young man, I still appreciate Bob so much.

With the Nats headed to pastures greener than MASN, it will be interesting to see what they do with the booth. Will it be a Dan Kolko/Kevin Frandsen booth, or will we see some new faces? We have plenty of time to discuss that, but to Bob, thank you and see you later!

Nationals News: DJ Herz hits the shelf with a concerning injury

MLB: Spring Training-Houston Astros at Washington Nationals

Reinhold Matay-Imagn Images

DJ Herz was put on the 15 day IL with an elbow injury and that doesn’t sound good

DJ Herz has been placed on the 15 day IL with a left UCL sprain. This is an ominous sign for the southpaw who’s velocity has been down all spring. Hopefully he can bounce back from this, but a UCL strain is often a precursor for the dreaded Tommy John Surgery.

DJ Herz was a popular breakout pick heading into the Spring. When I interviewed Andrew Golden of the Washington Post and Ryan Clary of Locked On Nationals, both mentioned him as a pick to click. He was a name I was looking at as well due to his deception and nasty stuff.

However, he never looked right this spring. His control, a previous problem Herz had done a decent job of mitigating was all over the place. He walked 9 batters in 9.2 spring innings. However, control has been a long term problem for Herz, so that wasn’t the most surprising thing in the world. These struggles caused him to lose the race for the fifth starter spot to Michell Parker.

What was surprising was how hittable he was. He allowed 10 hits this Spring, a lot for a guy who has always missed barrels. MLB hitters hit .224 against him last year and in his Minor League career, he held hitters to a .178 batting average.

With his velocity and stuff way down, it was clear something was wrong with Herz. It was attributed to “dead arm” earlier in the Spring, but now we have a more concrete answer. Hopefully Herz can avoid going under the knife and come back as soon as possible. He is a talented and unique pitcher who will be a big loss for the Nats.

Nationals News: Brad Lord going from Home Depot to the Big Leagues

MLB: Washington Nationals-Workouts

Jim Rassol-Imagn Images

Brad Lord has cracked the Opening Day roster in a bullpen role after solid spring

Brad Lord, who was working at Home Depot moving Christmas trees this winter is now headed to the Big Leagues. The 25 year old right hander has beaten the odds and is now going to be on the MLB roster.

This spring, the Nats have been experimenting with Brad Lord in a bullpen role, and it is clearly something they want to continue. While Lord posted an ERA above six this spring, basically all of the damage came in a single outing against the Rays. In his other eight appearances, he only gave up one earned run.

With DJ Herz’s injury and Lord’s starting background, it is a bit of a surprise that Lord broke camp. Many figured he would be sent to AAA to be the next man up in the rotation. However, the Nats decided that they wanted him on the roster.

This has to be a special moment for the 2022 18th rounder who was never meant to be much more than organizational depth. However, Lord’s stellar 2024 season made this opportunity possible for him. He posted a 2.43 ERA over 129.2 innings across three levels.

Lord will likely be the long man in the bullpen to start the season, as well as insurance for the rotation. With the 40 man roster full, the Nats will have to make a move to open up a spot for Lord. Will Lord’s success continue into the big leagues? Who knows, but even getting here is a massive win for both Lord and the organization.

The Washington Nationals Opening Day history

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals

Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

With Opening Day coming up tomorrow, I am looking back at the Nats Opening Day history

Tomorrow is Opening Day for your Washington Nationals. With that in mind, I wanted to talk about the Nats Opening Day history. We will touch on the results, the fixtures in Opening Day lineups, and some of the most iconic moments.

Results:

The Nats have had less than stellar results to open seasons since moving from Montreal in 2005. They are 8-12 on Opening Day, and an even worse 6-14 in home openers. The Nats will look to change that against the Phillies tomorrow, who they surprisingly haven’t played on Opening Day since 2010.

While there probably isn’t much correlation, the Nats have been more likely to make the playoffs when they win the first game of the season. 2019 is the only time they made the playoffs when they lost on Opening Day. However, that was the one time they won when they got to the playoffs. The Nationals have lost three straight Opening Days and five of the last six. Davey Martinez and the boys will look to right the ship this year and get off to a fast start.

Opening Day Fixtures:

Over the years, there have been some names Nats fans have been accustomed to seeing in Opening Day lineups. Unsurprisingly, Ryan Zimmerman has been the most steady presence of all. He has started 15 Opening Days for the Nats. Zimmerman played nine of those at third base and the last six at first base. From 2006-2019, he played every Opening Day for the Nats. After missing out in 2020 due to opting out of the COVID season, he returned in 2021, starting at first base.

Max Scherzer has the most Opening Day starts for the Nats with six. Stephen Strasburg is close behind with four. Despite the Nats going 8-12 overall, they won all four of Strasburg’s Opening Day starts. The Nats only have one Opening Day win in the 10 season openers not started by Strasburg or Scherzer. Mackenzie Gore will look to make that 2 in 11 tomorrow.

Of the current group, Keibert Ruiz has the most Opening Day experience. Barring any surprises, tomorrow will be his fourth straight Opening Day start behind the plate. Notably, this will be the first Opening Day for young stars James Wood and Dylan Crews.

Iconic Moments:

By far the greatest Nationals Opening Day moment came in 2008. It was the first ever game in Nationals Park and it had a storybook ending. In the bottom of the ninth, a 23 year old Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off homer to officially open the doors of Nationals Park. It was one of the most legendary moments in Nats history, and we wrote about it in the Federal Baseball 20th anniversary series.

While that is the only moment that was truly an all-timer, there have been some other fun Opening Day moments. In 2021, the Nats walked off the Braves on Juan Soto base hit. Back in 2014, Anthony Rendon’s 10th inning home run off of old friend and two time Opening Day starter John Lannan propelled the Nats to victory against the Mets.

The Nationals have had their ups and downs on Opening Day, but there have been plenty of fun moments. Hopefully 2025 will give us an Opening Day win that will be the start of something special.

Mackenzie Gore dominates as Washington Nationals bullpen falters

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images

Mackenzie Gore had one of the best starts of his career, but was tagged with a no decision

Mackenzie Gore was utterly dominant in six shutout innings where he struck out 13 and walked nobody. He was in cruise control throughout, only allowing one baserunner who was later caught on the base paths. Through six innings, Gore faced the minimum. However, he did not get a whole lot of help from the offense or the bullpen.

Through the early innings, Zack Wheeler and Mackenzie Gore were matching zeros. Aided by the shadows which made hitting tough, hitters were having trouble making any contact. The Nats started their season with five strikeouts in the first six batters.

Through the first four innings, there was not even a threat of any runs scoring. However, Keibert Ruiz changed that in the fifth. On the 12th pitch of the at bat, the Nats catcher deposited a ball into the right field bullpen to take the lead.

Meanwhile, Gore was still dealing. Between the second and fifth innings, only two Phillies put the ball in play. All and all, Mackenzie Gore was utterly dominant. He looked like an ace out there. This start was the best of his young career. Gore joined the great Bob Gibson as the only pitcher to ever have 13 strikeouts with no walks or runs on Opening Day in the history of baseball.

However, the Nationals did not give Gore the support he deserved. The second he was out of the game, the Phillies bats woke up. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber went deep in the 7th to make it a 2-1 Phillies lead. All of Mackenzie Gore’s brilliance was wasted.

However, in the bottom of the 7th the Nats rallied. They got two on with one out, but could not drive anyone home. Paul DeJong, who had a golden sombrero on the day struck out, and then Keibert Ruiz grounded out on the pitch after he swung at a ball that hit him.

With the Phillies adding an insurance run in the 8th, hope seemed lost. However, the Nats showed off some of their signature scrap. Dylan Crews walked and then Jacob Young was hit. The two speedsters then pulled off a sweet double steal.

CJ Abrams would drive in Crews on an RBI groundout. Then with two outs, Luis Garcia Jr. delivered dropping in an RBI knock to tie the game. The game got to extra innings after an incredibly stressful top of the ninth by Kyle Finnegan.

The Nats got the first two outs pretty easily. However, after a Bryce Harper walk the wheels fell off. Davey Martinez did not play the matchups, leaving lefty Colin Poche in the game to face righty Alec Bohm despite having Eduardo Salazar in the bullpen. Bohm made him pay with a two run double.

The Phillies would add a couple more runs on a misplay by Dylan Crews. It would have been a good catch, but one he has to make at the MLB level. With the game at 7-3, the oxygen was sucked out of the stadium, except for the large Philly contingent. The Nats went quietly into the night in the bottom of the 10th, losing 7-3.

There were a lot of positives and negatives in this game. Mackenzie Gore looked like a Cy Young contender, and Keibert Ruiz looked solid. However, a lot of the lineup struggled and the bullpen was a disaster. But hey, let’s go 1-0 on Saturday!

Breaking down MacKenzie Gore’s magical start against the Phillies

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images

MacKenzie Gore looked like an ace on Opening Day, here is how he did it

When you do something that hasn’t been accomplished since Bob Gibson, you know you are doing something right. That is exactly what MacKenzie Gore did yesterday when he went six scoreless innings striking out 13 and walking nobody. Gore looked absolutely dominant, and showed some new tricks to get the job done.

The most impressive thing about Gore’s performance was his command. He was pounding the strike zone yesterday, throwing 66 strikes in 93 pitches. There have been times where Gore’s control has failed him, but yesterday was not one of those days. Even his misses looked purposeful, setting something up. It was a pitcher in total control.

Besides the strike throwing, the thing I noticed the most was his slider. Last year he threw a hard slider, that was more of a cutter. However, he was throwing a true slider with a ton of bite today. Here he is striking out Brandon Marsh with it to get his 13th strikeout.

MacKenzie Gore's 13th Strikeout. pic.twitter.com/3e03SEUg33

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) March 27, 2025

Gore got six of his 13 punch outs on that slider. Interestingly, he only threw the slider against left handed hitters. However, he leaned on it heavily against them, throwing it more than his fastball to lefties. This true slider looks like an absolute weapon that dismantles left handers. While the shadows certainly helped him out, doing that to a good Phillies lineup in ultra impressive.

Against right handers, Gore had a more varied arsenal. He used his fastball, curveball, changeup, cutter combination to stifle the Phillies right handed bats. The cutter seems to just be the slider he threw last year, just with a new categorization. That changeup is something Gore has been refining for a while and it looked good today. He dropped in a beautiful one to strikeout Alec Bohm.

MacKenzie Gore has always had the stuff. There is a reason he was a top 3 pick and a top prospect for years. He has a dynamic arm from the left side. Last year Gore established himself as a solid middle of the rotation caliber arm. However, he looks ready to take that next step and become an ace this year.

To do that he will need to attack the zone like he did today. Another big key will be avoiding his annual mid summer swoon. Gore is no stranger to good starts. In April and May, Gore’s career ERA is under 3. However, in June and July he has career ERA marks of 5.43 and 7.89 respectively. To reach his ace potential, he will have to hold up in the dog days of summer.

If he is throwing strikes and commanding his new five pitch mix, this will not be a problem. However, I want to see how Gore responds when he doesn’t have his best stuff. If he can find a way to gut out a solid outing in those circumstances, I will be even more excited.

The Nationals have not had an ace since Max Scherzer left in 2021. There is no better feeling in the world than when your ace takes the mound. Today, MacKenzie Gore showed that ace type upside. All he has to do now is keep up the good work. The Nationals showed some flaws yesterday, but it also looks like they may have finally found their ace.

Do the Washington Nationals have a bullpen problem?

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images

The Nationals bullpen did not cover themselves in glory in the Opening Day loss

While MacKenzie Gore dominated, the rest of the pitching really struggled with the Phillies lineup. The bullpen allowed seven runs on seven hits and six walks in their four innings of dismal work. A combination of poor performance and some questionable moves by Davey Martinez came back to bite the Nationals.

The Nationals bullpen was a question mark heading into the season. Many people including myself were calling for veteran additions in the offseason. While they did bring in some vets in Lucas Sims, Jorge Lopez, Colin Poche, and the returning Kyle Finnegan, they did not bring in any lockdown options. None of those guys cost much money, and there is a reason why.

We saw that on display yesterday, when several of those guys struggled. Sims came in first in the seventh inning to relieve MacKenzie Gore. Maybe Gore could have stayed in one more inning, but after all it was Opening Day and he was at 93 pitches. After getting the first out, Sims quickly gave the lead away on a Bryce Harper home run.

Bryce Harper will be a Hall of Famer, so allowing a home run to him is not a massive sin. However, Sims struggled with the long ball last year and gave up three homers this spring. Hopefully this does not become a trend for the right hander. He did not walk anybody and was hitting the zone consistently, so that is a positive for the walk prone 30 year old.

Southpaw Jose A Ferrer came in later in the seventh with the left handed Kyle Schwarber coming up. However, he gave up a homer to him and was largely ineffective throughout his 34 pitch outing. I am still very high on Ferrer and think he can become a weapon for the Nats out of the pen. This was not his best display.

The cardiac king Kyle Finnegan came in for the 9th and gave us one of his signature nerve wracking outings. He did not allow a run, but struggled with command and did not look convincing.

In the 10th inning, Davey Martinez’s bullpen management was questionable at best. Lefty Colin Poche got two quick outs before walking Bryce Harper. Martinez allowed him to face righty Alec Bohm, who came through with a double. In Bohm’s career, his OPS against lefties is .871 compared to a .693 mark against righties. With righty Eduardo Salazar ready to go, this decision was a head scratcher.

Salazar eventually came in and struggled himself. Dylan Crews missed a fly ball he probably should have caught, and that made the game 7-3, out of reach for the Nats.

There is nothing close to a sure thing in this bullpen for the Nationals. Maybe Jose A Ferrer can become that, but he is still young and inexperienced. This Opening Day performance was an ominous sign for a unit that was far from a strength on paper. Jorge Lopez didn’t pitch and Derek Law will come back from injury soon, but neither of those guys are exactly Mariano Rivera in his prime.

The Nats can’t afford to waste starts like the one they got from Gore going forward. The guys in the bullpen need to step up and Davey needs to put them in spots where in the best spots to succeed. Neither of those things happened today, and it led to a loss. Hopefully this can be fixed up, or we could be in for a rough ride. In short, yes the Washington Nationals have a bullpen problem on their hands. However, it is not a totally unfixable issue.

Opposition Research: A look at Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo

MLB: Spring Training-Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies

Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

The Nationals will face a familiar foe in former Marlin Jesus Luzardo

The Washington Nationals will be facing off against the newest member of the Phillies rotation, Jesus Luzardo. Despite his recent arrival to Philadelphia, Luzardo is a name the Nats are familiar with.

Something many fans forget is that Luzardo was actually drafted by the Nationals. He was the Nats third round pick in 2016 out of Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. However, Luzardo was not with the organization for long. In 2017 he was part of the package that sent Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson to DC. It is kind of funny to see Doolittle coaching against a player he was traded for.

Luzardo has seen ups and downs since then. After 2020, he looked like a rising young star. However, the A’s traded him away the next year after Luzardo struggled. The left hander bounced back in Miami, pitching very well in 2022 and 2023. In those seasons, he put up a 3.48 ERA in 50 starts.

However, in 2024 he struggled with injury and ineffectiveness. That did not stop the Phillies from giving up a solid prospect haul to get him from Miami. They believe he can get back to his 2022-23 ways.

In 2023 Luzardo had an electric arsenal. His fastball averaged a blistering 96.7 MPH and hitters whiffed at his slider over half the time. Luzardo’s stuff was down in 2024 with his fastball down over a tick. This led to his strikeout rate going from 28.1% to 21.2%.

He has also struggled with the Nats over the years, In his seven starts, he has posted a 5.25 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. To add insult to injury, slap hitting Jacob Young hit his first career homer off of him in June.

Overall, Luzardo is coming off a concerning 2024 and the Nats have his number, but he is still very talented. There is a reason the Phillies gave up a top 100 prospect in Starlyn Caba to get him.

When Luzardo is at his best he can be a legitimate number 2 starter on a good team. The Phillies already have an elite rotation with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez. That means Luzardo can be a cherry on top. He doesn’t have to be the ace, he just gives the Phillies another option.

Hopefully the Nationals have that kind of depth and quality in their rotation before long. Luzardo is a good starter, but he is inconsistent and the Nats have shown they can get to him.

Washington Nationals fall as bullpen crumbles yet again

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals

Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images

The Nationals bullpen melted down for a second straight game to open the season

The Washington Nationals fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 11-6, giving the Fightin Phils the series win. It was a game that followed a familiar pattern to Opening Day. The Nationals took an early lead on a Keibert Ruiz homer before the bullpen squandered it.

Jake Irvin took the mound for the Nats and he gave the team five quality innings. It wasn’t the breathtaking display of dominance we saw on Opening Day from MacKenzie Gore, but he got the job done. Besides a fourth inning homer to Bryson Stott, Irvin did a good job getting himself out of jams.

Meanwhile, the Nats were mostly struggling to make contact against Jesus Luzardo. The newly acquired Phillies southpaw struck out 11 over five innings. A main culprit was Dylan Crews who was saddled with a platinum sombrero, going 0-5 with 5 K’s.

However, between the whiffs, the Nats actually got going in the second inning. After Amed Rosario got his first hit as a Nat, Keibert Ruiz went deep for the second time in as many games. This time he went yard from the right side of the plate.

Keibert Ruiz crushes his 2nd homer in as many games pic.twitter.com/ZlzcNuNdeK

— MLB (@MLB) March 29, 2025

I wonder if Keibert is the next formerly maligned Nats position player to have a post-hype breakout. Last year it was Luis Garcia Jr., this year it could be Keibert.

The positives ended when the bullpen entered the game. As was the case on Opening Day, the combination of Colin Poche and Lucas Sims absolutely killed the Nats. Poche is now 0-2 and we are only two games into the season. Sims allowed a homer, walked in a run and gave up a run on a wild pitch. It was little league stuff out there. MASN’s Mark Zuckerman put out a tweet about the bullpen, and it was ugly.

Nationals bullpen so far this season:
6 IP, 11 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 11 BB, 9 K, 5 HR

— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) March 29, 2025

The last time the bullpen looked this bad early in a season was 2019, and hey that worked out well. I do think it is fair to have a significant level of concern about the state of the bullpen.

After Poche and Sims made the game 7-2, Orlando Ribalta came in and got roughed up himself, allowing four runs in two innings. I would have loved to see Brad Lord get a shot to pitch today and complete his journey from Home Depot to the MLB, but Davey went with Eduardo Salazar who was solid.

The Nationals bats got going in the late innings with the game out of hand. Newcomers Amed Rosario and Nathaniel Lowe both hit their first homers as Nats. The Nats actually had a respectable 12 hits on the day, with Lowe, Wood, Abrams, Ruiz, and Rosario all having multi-hit days. So it was good to see the offense show some life.

However, the story of Opening Weekend has been the bullpen. It is something the Nationals need to figure out. This bullpen has a chance to torpedo the season. It is only two games, but they simply haven’t gotten people out. Its worth noting that Jorge Lopez, the best reliever the Nats picked up in the offseason has not pitched yet and Derek Law is out, but we are seeing a soft underbelly in the Nats bullpen. I really hope the guys can find a way to stabilize and become even an average unit.

There have been some positives to take away from the first couple games, especially Keibert Ruiz and MacKenzie Gore’s performances. However, this bullpen is really leaving a sour taste in the mouth of Nationals fans.

The Nationals and Phillies wrap up their three game series with the Nats looking to avoid the sweep

The Phillies and the Nationals finish off Opening Weekend with an afternoon tilt. The Nats are looking to avoid a season opening sweep. For the blow by blow action, follow in the comments down below.

The Nats lineup looks similar to their Opening Day one with a right hander on the mound. However, Keibert Ruiz has been rewarded for his hot start, hitting in the cleanup spot. Mitchell Parker is on the mound.

New veterans on the block propel Washington Nationals to their first win of the season

Powered by their slugging veteran pickups, the Washington Nationals got their first win of the season

The Washington Nationals got their first curly W of the 2025 season with a 5-1 win over the Phillies. They did it on the back of their powerful veterans and excellent starting pitching from Mitchell Parker.

Early on it was a pitchers duel. While Aaron Nola was cruising through the first few innings, Mitchell Parker was working his way in and out of trouble. Parker stranded two runners in the first and third inning and got a double play with men at first and second in the second inning. However, with Parker’s steady demeanor, it never felt like the Phillies were on the verge of a big inning despite all the base runners.

Nola absolutely breezed through the Nats lineup the first time around, only allowing one hit. In the fourth inning, it looked like more of the same with Luis Garcia Jr. and James Wood going down quickly. However, Nola opened the door when he hit Keibert Ruiz. After a hard hit single from the now red hot Nathaniel Lowe, Josh Bell came to the plate.

Bell rang the tower with a huge home run on a first pitch fastball that caught too much of the plate. Nola was dotting the corners most of the day, but he left this pitch out over the plate and Bell didn’t miss. I loved Josh in his first stint as a Nat, so seeing him get on the board is very fun. He had been working on getting into more power this offseason, and it worked in that at bat.

Armed with a three run lead, Parker began to pitch with more confidence. After a leadoff single in the fourth, the southpaw retired nine straight Phillies. After he got through the sixth, it was decision time for Davey. Leave Parker in, or go to the bullpen, which has been shaky to start the year.

With the Nats coming up in the top of the seventh, he had time to chew on it. With one out, Keibert Ruiz singled into right field to bring up Nathaniel Lowe. Lowe and behold, the Nats new first baseman had a wonderful at bat that was punctuated with a booming homer into left center. Lowe fought off multiple really good two strike pitches from Nola, and when the right hander finally made a mistake, he made him pay.

Later in the inning, Paul DeJong doubled into left to cap off his 3/3 day. DeJong has looked so steady with the glove, so him providing offense is a welcome sight. We know he will strike out a lot, but hopefully he can bring extra base hits with it.

Dylan Crews struck out to end the inning. Crews is in a real funk, and probably needs a day off tomorrow. After 8 straight strikeouts, it really looks like the youngster is pressing right now. His misplayed ball in the ninth was a play from a guy low on confidence.

With the Nats up 5-0, Davey’s decision was now a bit easier. He would ride with Parker, at least to start. However, Parker got into some trouble, allowing two hits. Jose A Ferrer would enter the game with one out. After he hit Kyle Schwarber, it looked like deja vu all over again. However, Ferrer got Alec Bohm to roll into a massive inning ending double play.

In the 8th, Jorge Lopez would come in and provide the Nats with the first drama free relief outing of the year. However, in the 9th, the drama would be back.

Davey turned to Brad Lord, who was making his MLB debut. Lord is a great story, but today was not his day. After allowing a leadoff hit, his control wavered, walking two straight. However, Kyle Finnegan would come in to save the day. A run scored on a fielders choice, but Finnegan did a great job limiting the damage and gave the Nats a 5-1 win.

This series had plenty of highs and lows, but it is so fun to see regular season baseball back. The starting rotation was excellent and the Nats have been hitting for power. However, the bullpen and Dylan Crews didn’t have the best opening weekend. Today, March 30th, the 2025 Washington Nationals got their first curly W.

What to watch for in Michael Soroka’s Washington Nationals debut

MLB: Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox

Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

Michael Soroka is making his Nationals debut and he should have success if he is throwing strikes

Michael Soroka is making his Washington Nationals debut, and I am intrigued. The Canadian kid is making his Nats debut in Canada against the Blue Jays. He is from Calgary, so it is not exactly a homecoming, but it should still be a fun opportunity for him.

Soroka had a red hot start to the spring, looking dominant in his first couple of outings. His velocity was up, his stuff graded out well and he looked ready for a breakout. However, he slumped in his last couple of outings, issuing far too many walks.

Free passes were an issue for him last year with the White Sox as well, walking five batters per nine innings. He will need to get that under control if he wants to find success in the rotation. Before his achilles injuries, Soroka had great command, which helped him become an All-Star in 2019. However, he has not been the same pitcher since.

Despite that he did show some flashes last year in Chicago which led the Nats to sign him to a 1-year $9 million deal. Soroka was very effective in a multi-inning relief role, with a 2.75 ERA in 16 bullpen outings. Across those 36 innings in the bullpen, he struck out 60 batters.

The Nationals are hoping the success he found out of the bullpen can translate into the rotation. They seem to believe his success came from an altered pitch mix rather than a switch in his role. Soroka also came to the Nats because he wanted an opportunity as a starter.

Since his debut in 2018, Soroka has had so many ups and downs in his career, it is hard to believe he is just 27. That youth gives him some big upside. Soroka is a high risk, high reward signing for the Nats. There is a chance he just isn’t effective and the walks become unbearable. However, what he did in that multi-inning relief role in Chicago was very tantalizing, as is the All-Star pedigree.

If Soroka hits, he can be an impactful starter for the Nats this year and is still young enough to be part of the future. However, as we saw this spring his strike throwing can come and go. Hopefully we will see the Soroka that was the talk of the town early in the spring tonight against the Jays. Coming off two achilles tears, I am rooting for Soroka to recapture the magic that made him an All-Star at 21 years old.

His pitch mix is very interesting as well. In Atlanta, he was mostly a sinker/slider guy. However, nowadays he throws his four-seam fastball a lot and it plays well with the sinker. The sinker gives him a good pitch to get ground balls, while the four-seamer gets whiffs at the top of the zone. His slider has been his put away pitch his entire career.

I am excited to see his arsenal on display tonight in his home country. Soroka will be a shoe-in for comeback player of the year if he comes out throwing strikes and looking like he did in his first two starts of Spring Training.

Follow along as the Nats take on the Blue Jays

Greetings on road game day! Excited to be apart of the Federal Baseball team! Should be a fun one especially with Michael Soroka on the mound tonight. Do not let those White Sox numbers from last year fool you.

Despite the slow start to the season from Dylan Crews, he remains in the line up tonight. Still looking for that first hit. The two guys that have started off the season hot, Ruiz and Lowe will bat three and four in the lineup.

It’s Vladdy bobblehead night in the Rogers Center. He will be batting second. The lefty second basemen Gimènez is the cleanup hitter, he has two home runs to start this early campaign. The lead off hitter Bichette has also been tearing the cover off of the baseball. On the mound is Bowden Francis.

Should the Washington Nationals try new Torpedo Bats?

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at New York Yankees

Brad Penner-Imagn Images

The torpedo bats are the talk of baseball right now, and I think the Nats should join the fun

The talk of the first week of the baseball season has been the bats. More specifically the new torpedo bats. After the Yankees went on an offensive rampage against the Brewers, it was revealed that they were using a new bat with a bigger sweet spot. We will talk about what these new bats are all about and why the Nats should buy into the craze.

What is a Torpedo Bat?

The torpedo bat was designed by former MIT physicist Aaron Leanhardt. He worked for the Yankees for many years before taking a job with the Marlins this season. Leanhardt used his scientific knowledge to create a new bat that is taking the baseball world by storm.

The torpedo bat is designed to put more of the wood and mass in the sweet spot of the bat, where hitters make the most and best contact. A side by side picture of the torpedo bat and a regular bat is jarring.

Yes, the Yankees have a literal genius MIT Physicist, Lenny (who is the man), on payroll. He invented the “Torpedo” barrel. It brings more wood - and mass - to where you most often make contact as a hitter. The idea is to increase the number of “barrels” and decrease misses. pic.twitter.com/CsC1wkAM9G

— Kevin Smith (@KJS_4) March 29, 2025

You can really see how this can help the hitter and why it has become so controversial. However, they are legal at least for now. According to the rules, the thickest part of the bat can’t be more than 2.61 inches in diameter. The torpedo bats are within those rules.

Creating Liftoff:

The biggest reason the torpedo bats are in the news is because they work. On Opening Weekend, the Yankees hit 15 home runs in their first three games, tying an MLB record. Nine of those 15 came from players using the torpedo bats.

It was a truly stunning offensive outburst from a Yankees team that had just lost Juan Soto. Now players that aren’t on the Yankees are joining in on the fun. Elly De La Cruz used the bats for the first time yesterday and went 4/5 with two homers and seven RBI’s. Before too long, we should see a lot of hitters using these new weapons.

Torpedos in the Nations Capital:

As long as these torpedo bats remain legal, the Nationals should join in on the fun. In the pregame media scrum yesterday, Davey Martinez said the team had not ordered any torpedo bats yet, but seemed open to the idea. I think the Nationals should be all in.

We need to find whatever competitive advantage we can get, and it looks like these bats can provide them. Even if they aren’t a magical elixir, they should work as a confidence booster if nothing else. Maybe Dylan Crews should order a torpedo bat to try to change things up. I want the Nationals to be on the cutting edge of baseball, and these bats are part of that. After all, if you aren’t living on the edge, are you really living?

Imagine what a guy like James Wood could do with a slightly bigger sweet spot. It feels like most of the data based advancement has been on the pitching side lately. These pitching labs that help pitchers understand how their body works is part of the reason why so many guys are throwing so hard now. Pitchers are also developing nastier and nastier off speed pitches every year it seems. It is time for the hitters to catch up and these bats are helping out. We can now track bat speed and stuff like that as well.

At the end of the day, the Nationals hitters need to be comfortable with the bat, but if they are why not give it a shot. Put in the order Davey!

Follow along as the Nats try to rebound against the Blue Jays

After an interesting performance from the offense yesterday, today’s lineup only has one notable change. Alex Call will be getting his first action of the 2025 season in the 8 hole.

Dylan Crews is getting a much needed night of rest after a hitless start to this new campaign. Call is coming off a good spring training where he was boasting a .333 batting average in 52 at bats. On the mound as well for the first time this year is righty Trevor Williams.

For the dollar hot dog night Blue Jays, George Springer moves to center. Roden moves from left to right field. While Platoon man Clement gets the start at third base after not being in the lineup yesterday. The same big four still spearheads this lineup.

On the mound is José Berríos, who was the opening day starter for the Blue Jays last week. He got rocked giving up six runs in five innings to Baltimore.

Follow along as the Nationals look to avoid the sweep with ace MacKenzie Gore on the mound

For a second straight series, the Nationals are looking to avoid the sweep in game three of the series. A key to victory will be avoiding the strikeouts which have been piling up for them.

The lineup has a couple alterations today. Dylan Crews is back in the action, but will be center field instead of right field. Alex Call will remain in right after a multi-hit day. With a lefty on the mound, Davey will turn to Amed Rosario at second base. Ace MacKenzie Gore will take the mound after a stellar season debut.

The Blue Jays are making a few alterations to the bottom of the lineup with a lefty on the mound. Notably, star catcher Alejandro Kirk is getting the day off. Journeyman Easton Lucas will be on the mound, but don’t be surprised if we see a lot of Toronto’s bullpen. This is Lucas’ first career MLB start.

Nationals unable to overcome red-hot Blue Jays, dropping their third in a row

MLB: Washington Nationals at Toronto Blue Jays

Brad Lord throws a pitch against the Toronto Blue Jays in a 4-2 loss. | Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays in a 4-2 loss, falling victim to a series sweep.

The Washington Nationals fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 in a game in which Toronto took control early and never let go. Toronto's early offense and great pitching season debut have the Blue Jays hitting on all cylinders, while the Nationals are trying to find their groove and compete this season.

In the bottom of the first, Andres Gimenez put Toronto on the board first, giving the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead

While the Nationals bats were cold, Toronto’s George Springer sent one out of the park in the bottom of the 4th to give Toronto a commanding 2-0 lead.

Washington would go the first five innings with only one hit as Toronto’s Easton Lucas had a career game.

DYLLY WITH IT pic.twitter.com/z6CfMGNo1E

— Washington Nationals (@Nationals) April 2, 2025

The first run of the day for the away team would come from a much-needed C.J. Abrams solo home run in the top of the 6th, however, Toronto would answer right back with a run of their own, holding a 4-1 lead.

Washington put one more run on the board and gave themselves an opportunity late in the game, however, the momentum from Toronto put Washington away, suffering their fifth loss of the season.

Pitching Matchup:

MacKenzie Gore (WAS):

  • 5 Innings
  • 9 Hits
  • 3 Earned Runs
  • 2 Walks
  • 5 Strikeouts

Coming off of a career performance against the Phillies, Gore struggled with the same consistent swing and misses he had in his first performance. However, Gore provided a quality start and this is what he has been known for, finishing last season with a sub-4.00 ERA.

Easton Lucas (TOR):

  • 5 Innings
  • 1 Hit
  • 0 Earned Runs
  • 0 Walks
  • 3 Strikeouts

In his first career start, 28-year-old Easton Lucas put on an incredible performance for a Toronto team that is finding a groove, starting the season 4-2. Lucas, a veteran relief pitcher, is looking to cement himself in the starting rotation and this performance showed what he is capable of.

Key Batters:

WASHINGTON:

C.J. Abrams- 1-4, RBI, HR

Nathaniel Lowe: 1-4, RBI

CJ Abrams just absolutely destroyed a baseball for his first home run of the season pic.twitter.com/j5ZWsjbftX

— optimistic nats fan (@optimistic5518) April 1, 2025

TORONTO:

Anthony Santander- 2-4

George Springer- 1-3, RBI, HR

Miles Straw- 3-4

CONCLUSION:

Washington has started their season off in the worst way, losing 5 of their first 6 games. Young players such as James Wood and Dylan Crews are struggling to start the season and it looks like this season could be another rebuilding year. However, it is still too early to set the season aside as a rebuilding year. With lots of talent, this team should be able to put on a show, once the bats start clicking.
