Follow along as the Nationals continue their home stand with a matchup against the wild card hunting Reds

This is the 100th game of the Washington Nationals season. The first 99 have not been good enough and it has been really hard to watch this team play lately. However, there are still 62 more after this one. Hopefully something can click for these Nats.

In the lineup, Amed Rosario will get his first start in a little while. Josh Bell and Brady House will also return to action after sitting on Sunday. Riley Adams will get the call again behind the plate after he homered yesterday. On the mound, Jake Irvin will take the ball. The Nats really need the right hander to eat some innings today.

The Reds are right in the mix for an NL Wild Card spot at 52-48, so this is a massive series for them. The Reds lineup is highlighted by Elly De La Cruz. However, they have some unsung heroes like Austin Hays and TJ Friedl who are having big seasons. On the mound, sinker baller Brady Singer will toe the slab.

How Josh Bell revived his season and potentially saved his career

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals

Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images

After a miserable start to his second stint with the Washington Nationals, Josh Bell has recaptured some of his old glory

In April this would have sounded nearly impossible, but Josh Bell is one of the Washington Nationals best hitters, and has been for a little while now. After a miserable start to the season, where most wanted the DH gone, Bell has turned his season around.

Since May 1st, Josh Bell has been everything he was supposed to be since he signed a 1-year $6 million contract to return to DC. Bell is hitting .268 with a .354 on base percentage and a .793 OPS since the start of May. That is 2.5 months of very good play and it could make him a viable trade chip. Bell has been surging lately, with an .866 OPS over his last 30 contests.

Josh Bell in his last 30 games:

.311 AVG
.866 OPS
3 HRs
13 RBIs

This strong surge may be setting Josh Bell up to be a nice trade piece for the Nats… THOUGHTS⁉️#Natitude pic.twitter.com/Dpt5ZXsfPZ

— SleeperNationals (@SleeperNats) July 22, 2025

The horrific start means his season numbers are still slightly below average, but when you look under the hood, this is the best Josh Bell has been in a while. His strikeout and walk rates are the best they have been since 2022. Bell also has the highest hard hit rate since the 2021 season. All his batted ball data suggests that this recent run is no fluke and that he can keep this up as long as he doesn’t fall into one of his patented slumps.

So how did this happen? How did a guy who was one of the worst hitters in baseball the first month of the season turn his year around? Well, we got some of the answers in an article by Mark Zuckerman today.

How Josh Bell turned his season around by focusing less on hitting home runs and more on just hitting line drives. “You can slug hitting a ball in the gap, hitting it down the line. I’ve tried to do that the last couple months, and it’s been working out.”https://t.co/4QM5XMoifY

— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 22, 2025

When he was signed, Bell emphasized that he wanted to be a slugger. The 6’3 261 pound behemoth was clearly unhappy that he hit under 20 homers in 2024 and wanted to slug. However, despite his monster size, Bell has never really been a three true outcome slugger.

Bell has plenty of power, but has never been an all or nothing power hitter. He has only hit over 30 bombs once in his career. At his core, Bell is a guy who likes to spray the ball around the yard and because of his strength the power will come with that.

Since May, Bell has gotten back to that way of hitting and it has worked for him. He isn’t hunting for power at all costs and it has allowed him to get back to his game. Bell has not been the only Nat to fall victim to that power first approach.

That same strategy has also hurt Nathaniel Lowe’s game. While the Nats first baseman has been hitting more homers this year, it has come at the expense of his all around game. He is not walking as much and isn’t hitting for much average. Hopefully Lowe can find a way to make that same adjustment.

However, by going back to his roots, Josh Bell has rediscovered his stroke. While getting guys to focus on lifting the ball is a good idea on paper, it does not work for everybody. Some guys are not going to be optimized by hunting for power, and Josh Bell is one of those guys.

There is no one size fits all approach to hitting. Each player has things they excel at. For a guy like CJ Abrams, he is at his best when he is pulling the ball, whether that is yanking doubles down the line, or lifting home runs. However, that does not work for everyone.

It is good to see Josh Bell have success. Everyone in DC knows how amazing Josh Bell the person is. It is nice to see Josh Bell the player have a big impact on this club as well.

Follow along as the Nats look to build on last night’s high scoring win

It was more stressful that it should have been, but the Washington Nationals got back in the win column last night. They jumped on Reds pitchers early and often, putting up double digits on the night. Now they will look to solve the Reds flame throwing phenom.

The Nationals are only making one change to the lineup tonight. Luis Garcia Jr. will be back in there, replacing Amed Rosario. Otherwise, the same faces will square off against Reds righty Chase Burns. Brad Lord will make his first start since rejoining the rotation. He is not expected to go too deep in the game.

The Reds are keeping things mostly the same as well. Gavin Lux and Austin Hays are swapping positions from last night, with Lux now in left field and Hays at DH. Tyler Stephenson will take Jose Trevino’s place behind the plate. As has been eluded to, flame throwing Chase Burns will be on the mound. He was the number 2 pick in the 2024 draft. Burns raced through the minors but has had an up and down start to his MLB career.

The Washington Nationals continue their sluggish day time performances

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals

Brad Mills-Imagn Images

The Nationals fall to 13-31 in day games after getting shut out by a dominant Nick Lodolo

The Washington Nationals continued their season long trend of turning in sluggish performances in day games. They fell to an astonishing 13-31 in day games. In night games, the Nats have held their own with a 28-30 record. However, when the sun is shining, the Nationals bats are dormant.

This game was a continuation of a lot of disturbing trends for the Nationals. As mentioned, the day game struggles continued. This was something we wrote about earlier this month. They were 13-25 after dropping an early contest to the Red Sox. That has only gotten worse, with six straight losses under the sun.

However, there is more to discuss as well. This was the third time a pitcher has thrown a complete game shutout against the Nats. There have only been 10 complete game shutouts all season, so the Nats offense makes up 30% of those games.

There have been 10 complete-game shutouts in the majors this season, and 3 of them have been pitched against the Nationals. https://t.co/nZFWgT5CKP

— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 23, 2025

This series has been a decent summation of the Nationals offense. It is not a terrible offense but it is so wildly inconsistent. When they put up a big number, you know a shutout is coming in the next day or two. That is what happened today.

However, it was not only down to the offense. You have to tip your cap to Nick Lodolo. He was executing at an extraordinary level. The Reds southpaw was dotting corners all day long and keeping guys off balance with his refined pitch mix.

Michael Soroka gave the Nats quality innings as well. Despite continuing his recent trend of decreased velocity, Soroka was effective today. He went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks. Soroka did a nice job working his way out of trouble and using his breaking ball to keep guys off balance.

Konnor Pilkington also came in for a second straight day and dominated. After being the breakout star last night, Pilkington had a good follow up performance. His stuff looked very crisp. This guy has earned a spot in this bullpen moving forward.

However, the bats were just totally silent. Lodolo scattered four hits across his nine innings of masterful work. It is frustrating seeing how inconsistent this offense can be. One day they are on top of the world, the next they are lost at the plate.

With a lot of young guys and an often criticized hitting coach, this is not too surprising. A lot of the players themselves are very up and down, so the offense itself reflects that. Guys like CJ Abrams, Josh Bell, and Luis Garcia Jr. are hitters with extreme peaks and valleys.

The highlight of the game was an insane grab by Jacob Young who made an insane home run robbery. He made an insane catch a few weeks ago, but I think this one was better. Young climbed the wall like Spiderman and made a catch that needs to be on Sports Center’s top 10 plays, if they still do that.

MUST SEE: JACOB YOUNG SCALES THE WALL TO BRING THIS ONE BACK! pic.twitter.com/6UjvH4JXDD

— MLB (@MLB) July 23, 2025

That was an insane moment, but it was an otherwise dreary game for the Nats. It feels like there have been a lot more of those kinds of games this year compared to the last couple years. Some days you can just tell very early on that they don’t have it.

However, now it is time for the Nats to move on. They have an off day tomorrow and then head to Minnesota to take on the Twins. This could be the last home game for a lot of Nats players, as they won’t be in DC until after the deadline.

MLB Draft: Washington Nationals sign two top prep talents to over-slot deals

Syndication: The Clarion-Ledger

Hannah Mattix/Clarion Ledger / USA TODAY NETWORK

Highly touted high schoolers Landon Harmon and Coy James signed over-slot deals to join the Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are continuing to sign members of their 2025 draft class. Today, they signed two of their high profile high school picks to big money deals. Third round pick Landon Harmon and fifth round pick Coy James both signed today, receiving signing bonuses of $2.5 million each.

Slot Game:

These two players are the real prizes of the draft class. They are part of the reason why the Nationals decided to cut a deal with Eli Willits at the number one overall pick. By saving money on the Willits pick, they brought in a trio of high upside high schoolers in later rounds. Fourth rounder Miguel Sime Jr. already signed for $2 million.

Now the Nationals have signed their other big money prepsters. Sime, Harmon and James were all seen as top 100 talents by most of the industry, but the Nats got them at 80th, 111th and 142nd respectively.

You have to look at the money when discussing how this was possible. The MLB Draft is all about trying to find the best ways to allocate money. With these bonus numbers, the Nats are really treating these guys like they are top 40-50 talents in the draft.

At $2.5 million, Harmon and James are being paid the recommended slot value of the 39th overall pick. Sime, who is getting paid $2 million is getting paid about what you would expect the 49th overall pick to be paid. It is complicated stuff, but it is crucial to understand when talking about the draft.

The Nationals overall bonus pool, or how much they can spend on their class is about $16.6 million. Mike DeBartolo and the draft room decided the best way to spend that pool of cash is to cut a deal with Willits, a guy they thought was a comparable talent to an Ethan Holliday. With that money, they splashed the cash on high upside high schoolers in round 3-5.

What are the Nationals Getting:

Now it is time to talk about the players themselves, what are the Nationals getting in Landon Harmon and Coy James? From the way they paid them, they are obviously expecting big things from these two.

3rd-rder Landon Harmon signs w/@Nationals for $2.5 million (slot 80 value = $1,010,600). Mississippi prep RHP, easy fastball up to 99 mph, good feel for low-80s slider, athletic & good extension. Mississippi State recruit. @MLBDraft pic.twitter.com/A32Pr3jBCr

— Jim Callis (@jimcallisMLB) July 24, 2025

Let’s start with Harmon since he was picked first. Landon Harmon is a big right handed pitcher out of Mississippi with a monster fastball. The fastball is a plus pitch that could become plus-plus in the future. His fastball is a tantalizing combination of velocity and shape.

Harmon already sits in the 93-96 MPH range and can touch 99 MPH on his heater. This is despite Harmon still having plenty of room to fill out his 6’5 190 pound frame. There is already good velocity with more in the tank. It is also a heater that just explodes out of his hand thanks to the carry he gets and how gets down the mound.

It is one of the best fastballs of any high schooler in the draft. Harmon also has a solid slider to go with it. He has shown an ability to manipulate shape and really spin the ball. It is not an elite pitch like the fastball, but he has shown a real feel for spin. Harmon has the potential to have a plus slider.

The changeup is not really there yet and developing a third pitch will be an important part of his development. He has plenty of time to find a changeup, or some other third offering. For a guy with elite stuff, Harmon has solid command to go with it.

That part of his game reminds me of Travis Sykora coming out of high school. Both are big guys with big stuff, but also have a surprising feel to pitch. Landon Harmon has the potential to explode in a very similar style as Sykora, who is now a top 30 prospect in the sport.

5th-rder Coy James signs w/@Nationals for $2.5 million (slot 142 value = $2.5 million), ties @MLBDraft record for highest bonus ever after 4th rd. North Carolina high school SS, could hit for power & average, strong arm too. Mississippi recruit. pic.twitter.com/ngMhw1gzYs

— Jim Callis (@jimcallisMLB) July 24, 2025

Now it is time to talk about Coy James. He is an interesting prospect and a real steal for the Nats in the fifth round. This is no normal fifth round pick and his bonus shows us that. It is the most money ever given to a player after the fourth round.

James actually had some late first to early second round buzz prior to the draft. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, who is a plugged in guy mocked James to be selected by the Tigers 24th overall in his last mock draft.

The North Carolina native has an intriguing combination of hitting ability and power. He has a chance to be an above average hitter with above average power. A star as an underclassman, James had a rocky summer where scouts felt he lost some athleticism trying to put on muscle.

While James is a shortstop for now, he is likely to move off the position. A move to either third base or second base makes sense. However, the biggest selling point of James’ game is his offensive ability.

Despite being a fifth rounder, James has big time potential. He was rumored to have a strong commitment to Ole Miss, so the Nats had to pony up to keep him off campus. Now, the only major piece that is not signed is second rounder Ethan Petry, who should sign very soon.

Nationals Bonus Spending
Pick 1: Eli Willits 8.2M / 11.1M
Pick 49: Ethan Petry: TBD / 2.0M
Pick 80: Landon Harmon 2.5M / 1.0M
Pick 111: Miguel Sime: 2.0M / 687K
Pick 142: Coy James: 2.5M / 509K

Willits + RND 5-10 allowed for lots of savings. Wonder what Petry looks like.

— G (@GSmozz) July 24, 2025

Overall, this is shaping up to be an impressive draft class. This is the most excited I have been about a draft class in a very long time. Our 2023 group is the only other time I have been really excited about a class lately. However, that group does not have the depth of talent this years class has.

Hopefully these guys can rise through the system and be part of the next great Washington Nationals team. This group excites me and can hopefully help the Nats farm system rise up the rankings again.

Follow along as the Nats kick off their road trip in Minnesota

After a series win against the Reds, the Nationals will look to continue their momentum against the Twins. Like the Nats, the Twins have had a disappointing season and could be selling at the deadline. However, there is still plenty of talent on this Twins roster.

MacKenzie Gore is looking to bounce back after he had the worst start of his career last time out. His ERA really ballooned after allowing 8 runs in 2.1 innings. The Nationals will run out what has become their standard lineup. Their top two guys, CJ Abrams and James Wood will lead the way. Cleanup man Josh Bell has also been red hot lately. Riley Adams will be behind the plate catching Gore tonight.

The Twins lineup has some big names in it. Guys like Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa, Royce Lewis and Harrison Bader have a lot of pedigree. It is a rarity to see all of those guys healthy at the same time though, but they are tonight. Players like Willi Castro and Ryan Jeffers don’t have the same name brand value, but are solid contributors as well. Zebby Matthews, a former top 100 prospect looking to establish himself in the Twins rotation will take the mound.

The Washington Nationals send Amed Rosario to the New York Yankees for a solid haul

MLB: Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals

Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

The Nationals sent their lefty masher to the Yankees for an MLB ready arm and a DSL flier

Mike DeBartolo has made his first trade of this deadline season. He sent Amed Rosario to the Yankees for two prospects. The two prospects are right handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez.

The Yankees have acquired INF Amed Rosario from the Nationals. Rosario, a RHB, has an .816 OPS vs LHP. He’s played 3B, 2B, SS and OF this season. Yanks will deal P Clayton Beeter and Browm Martinez, an OF in Dominican Summer Lg. Smart addition

— JackCurryYES (@JackCurryYES) July 27, 2025

Rosario was always going to be a guy with some value due to his ability to hit left handed pitching. He is a natural platoon bat who can be on the bench against right handed pitching but mash lefties. Rosario is a versatile defender, who can play a number of spots, but does not play any of them well.

To the return, the Nats got a couple decent pieces. Clayton Beeter is a guy that can slide into a big league bullpen right now. He is the Yankees 20th ranked prospect and has big time stuff. Beeter has 39 strikeouts in 23.2 AAA innings this year.

However, command has always been a big problem for the right hander and has been what has held him back. He has a 96 MPH heater and a wipeout slider, but does not throw enough strikes. If the Nats can find a way to get him in the zone more, he could be an interesting bullpen arm at 26 years old.

Browm Martinez is the epitome of a guy you take a flier on. He is putting up insane numbers in the Dominican Summer League. Martinez is hitting over .400 with a 1.139 OPS in 57 AB’s. He is just tearing up that league in his second year there. Martinez is just 18, so this could be an interesting guy to follow moving forward.

This is a solid return for a guy in Rosario that the Nats signed to a 1-year $2 million deal. I like the idea of getting a guy who is close to the big leagues, while also taking a chance on a guy who has more mystery around him. Nice first trade by Mike DeBartolo.

CJ Abrams and Jake Irvin lead the Washington Nationals to another series win

MLB: Washington Nationals at Minnesota Twins

Nick Wosika-Imagn Images

The Nationals just wrapped up their first winning week since late May but there is still worries about their star bats struggles

The Washington Nationals had their best week since the end of May. They had a winning week for the first time since they took series against the Mariners and D-Backs right around Memorial Day. The Nats played a good ball game today, pouncing on mistakes at the plate and locating on the mound.

Jake Irvin had an excellent start. He wasn’t missing a ton of bats with just two strikeouts and eight whiffs. However, he did a nice job limiting the damage and avoiding hard contact later on in his start. He was running into a lot of loud outs early, but as the game went on, he settled in

Interestingly, Irvin’s velocity was up today. He averaged over 93 MPH on his 4-seam fastball and it was up 1 MPH from its season average. The Minnesota native was excellent in his first start back home. After a few discouraging starts from Irvin lately, it was great to see him get back on track in a home coming game.

Jake Irvin picks up the win today against the Twins.

— Nationals on MASN (@masnNationals) July 27, 2025

CJ Abrams was also fantastic today. He set the tone on the first pitch of the game, sending a moonshot into the muggy Minnesota air. Abrams has been on a mini-slump lately, so it was nice to see him break out of it in a big way today.

CJ Abrams rockets one out on the first pitch pic.twitter.com/WTTMZcPpY2

— MLB (@MLB) July 27, 2025

Abrams was also making an impact beyond just one home run. He stole three bases today, reminding us of how much of a threat he can be on the bases. After a single in his second at bat, Abrams stole second and third before scoring on a sac fly.

It was a run that Abrams created all by himself. Today was one of Abrams best games of the season, even though he did make an error. Defensively, he made up for that error with a few athletic plays.

While Abrams was the star of the show offensively, Josh Bell and Alex Call just continued to hit. Bell has been one of the Nats best hitters for a while now. The Nationals are simply a better baseball team when Alex Call is in the lineup. It feels like his good at bats can be contagious for this young team. He is such an under appreciated player.

Today was a mostly positive day, but there is one negative we need to talk about. It is a bit of an elephant in the room right now. James Wood is really struggling man. He had a golden sombrero today, going 0/4 with a walk.

His average is down to .263 and his OPS is down to .868. Going into July 4th, Wood’s average was .294 and his OPS was .958. It has been really tough sledding since then. In his last 15 games, Wood is hitting .121 with 31 strikeouts in 58 at bats. It has become extremely difficult and painful to watch our young slugger at the plate.

He is going to bounce back, but it is pretty clear he needs a mental reset. It would be pretty crazy to let him face Framber Valdez tomorrow, one of the best lefties in all of baseball. Wood’s mechanics are all over the place and his confidence seems dangerously low.

Besides that, today was a great Nats game. The boys played well and have shown some fight these last couple of days. Enjoy this offense while it lasts because at any moment, the bats could go radio silent. Time to carry this momentum into Houston!

Washington Nationals Eye Signature Series Win Against Powerhouse Houston Astros

MLB: Washington Nationals at Minnesota Twins

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan (67) and catcher Riley Adams (15) celebrate a victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. | Nick Wosika-Imagn Images

Washington’s young core gets a chance to compete against one of baseball’s most complete and experienced rosters.

Washington is coming off back-to-back series wins and is looking for another against a stellar Houston Astros squad. Trade rumors are swirling around the organization, including prized All-Star pitcher MacKenzie Gore. With almost no shot at a playoff run in 2025, veterans will be sold, and the rebuild will continue. This is one of the most important series of the season for Michael Soroka and Josh Bell, veterans who will be trying to contribute to a playoff team.

The Houston Astros are one of the top teams in the American League, currently leading the American League West. With a stellar lineup paired with two of the best pitchers in baseball (Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown), Houston is pushing for the chance to represent the American League in the World Series.

Let’s take a closer look at just how good the Houston Astros are.

TEAM STATS

OFFENSE

Houston made some huge moves during the off-season, which included trading away long-time Astro Kyle Tucker for Isaac Paredes and Cubs’ top prospect Cam Smith. They signed Christian Walker to a long-term deal after spending most of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jeremy Pena has taken a huge leap this season, posting career-highs across the board. As a team, they are batting .257 (2nd), scoring 456 runs (17th), hitting 116 home runs (14th), boasting an on-base percentage of .322 (10th), and a slugging percentage of .404 (13th).

PITCHING

Hunter Brown has been one of the most improved players in baseball this season, posting a 2.54 ERA and already a career high in WAR at 3.9. Brown and Valdez have been incredible for Houston and will be a scary duo heading into the playoffs. However, injuries to the rest of the rotation have caused questions to arise with the trade deadline looming. Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu have been some of the best bullpen arms in baseball and should continue to dominate this season. As a team, they have a 3.73 ERA (9th), allowed 124 home runs (21st), 1.19 WHIP (3rd), and teams are batting .230 against them (4th).

GAME ONE - Monday, 8:10 EDT

WAS: RHP Brad Lord (2-5) - 36 G (7 GS), 3.39 ERA, 57 SO, 1.26 WHIP, 117 ERA+

HOU: LHP Framber Valdez (11-4) - 20 G, 2.67 ERA, 129 SO, 1.13 WHIP, 152 ERA+

Rookie Brad Lord has been primarily used out of the bullpen but was experimented with early on as a starter. After performing well out of the bullpen and with injuries to the starting rotation, Lord has been inserted back into the starting rotation. He performed well in his last start, throwing four innings and allowing six hits and one earned run.

Framber has continued to demonstrate why he is one of the best left-handed pitchers of the 2020s. Valdez is having one of the best seasons of his career, posting his lowest ERA since his rookie season, and is on track to produce more WAR than in any other year of his career. In his last start, he continued his domination, throwing seven innings of one-run baseball in another Houston win.

GAME TWO - Tuesday, 8:10 EDT

WAS: RHP Michael Soroka (3-8) - 15 G, 4.85 ERA, 83 SO, 1.13 WHIP, 82 ERA+

HOU: TBD

Soroka has become one of the biggest trade pieces for Washington and could provide quality innings for a team desperate for innings to be filled. In his last three starts, he has allowed less than two runs twice and is improving his trade value. His last start was stellar, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just two hits and one run. With no run support, Washington was shut out by the Cincinnati Reds 5-0.

GAME THREE - Wednesday, 2:10 EDT

WAS: LHP MacKenzie Gore (4-10) - 21 G, 3.52 ERA, 144 SO, 1.28 WHIP, 113 ERA+

HOU: TBD

Since throwing in the All-Star game, Gore has struggled to continue the same level of performance we were seeing in the first half. In two starts since the break, Gore has allowed nine total runs and has walked nine batters while only striking out six. With trade rumors swirling about him and his future with the team, this could be one of the most important starts at this point in his career. In his last start, he only allowed one run on one hit but walked six batters in a loss to the Minnesota Twins.

With the trade deadline looming, it is a waiting game for the Nationals and the fans. With rumors swirling, it feels like nobody is safe in Washington. However, with prospect returns inevitable, the rebuild should continue smoothly as Washington preps to compete next season. Both of these teams are completely different teams, and are on two different spectrums of the trade deadline, which makes this series even more important.

Despite striking out 19 times last night, the Nationals won 2-1 thanks to great pitching and a Riley Adams home run. Winners of three straight, the Nationals will look to take the series against an Astros team who’s injury problems finally seem to be catching up with them.

After a day off, Miguel Cairo has decided to put his star James Wood back in the lineup. Wood has had massive issues making contact this month, so fans will be looking for him to make some adjustments. Luis Garcia Jr. will also be back in the lineup with a right handed pitcher on the mound. This very well could be Michael Soroka’s last start in a Nationals uniform with the trade deadline approaching.

The Astros are also going to make some tweaks to their lineup. Rookie standout Cam Smith will be in the lineup. The Nationals had a chance to select him in the 2024 MLB Draft, but took Seaver King instead. Shay Whitcomb will also be inserted into the lineup. Journeyman Jason Alexander will get the start for the injury ravaged Astros.

Washington Nationals trade Michael Soroka to the Chicago Cubs for two of their top 15 prospects

MLB: Washington Nationals at Houston Astros

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals have swung their biggest trade so far, sending Michael Soroka to the Cubs for Ronny Cruz and Christian Franklin

After a minor move this afternoon, Mike DeBartolo has swung a bigger trade tonight. He sent Michael Soroka to the Cubs for shortstop Ronny Cruz and outfielder Christian Franklin. The pair are the Cubs 13th and 14th ranked prospects.

Can confirm that the Nationals have traded Michael Soroka to the Chicago Cubs for two prospects — SS Ronny Cruz and OF Christian Franklin. @Ken_Rosenthal first on it.

— Andrew Golden (@andrewcgolden) July 31, 2025

While Soroka did not put up the best surface level stats, he did a lot of intriguing things. He did a good job getting strikeouts and limiting walks. His expected ERA of 3.32 is well below his actual ERA of 4.87.

While his velocity has dipped in recent starts, the Nationals still managed to get a solid return for the 27 year old right hander. Batters are hitting just .124 against his slurve this year. That is something the Cubs saw and must have really liked.

On to the return itself, the highest upside piece in the trade is shortstop Ronny Cruz. The 18 year old has had a very interesting journey. He is from the Dominican Republic, but after a deal with a team fell through, he moved to America to play high school baseball and get adjusted to American life.

He ended up being drafted out of high school in the third round by the Cubs last year. Cruz is a raw talent, but has big time upside. He has massive power potential, but is still a project. Cruz is a ways away and far from a guarantee, but his upside is immense. Think of this as the hitter version of Alex Clemmey.

Franklin couldn’t be more different. He is a 25 year old outfielder who has been productive in AAA this year. Franklin feels slightly redundant with guys like Robert Hassell and Daylen Lile, but Mike DeBartolo must see something in him. He could be a big league player right now, but do the Nats have a spot for him. Does this make an Alex Call trade more likely.

We will break down the return more tomorrow, but this is solid value for Soroka. The right handers velocity is down and his surface level stats are mediocre, so nice job by Mike DeBartolo.

New Washington Nationals prospect Ronny Cruz is high risk high reward

MLB: Draft Combine

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Former Chicago Cubs draft pick Ronny Cruz has an interesting story and some massive upside

The biggest piece the Washington Nationals got back in the Michael Soroka deal is shortstop Ronny Cruz. He is a raw 18 year old shortstop, but a player who has massive upside. Cruz also has a very interesting and unusual journey we will dive in to.

“He generated some of the highest exit velocities during BP at the MLB Draft Combine and could produce 25 or more homers on an annual basis once he's fully developed.” -MLB Pipeline on Ronny Cruz, newest Washington Nationals prospect
pic.twitter.com/jCDfQY8rcM

— Paul Cubbage (@PaulCubbage23) July 31, 2025

In a lot of ways, Cruz is the epitome of a boom or bust prospect. He has four really good tools. The raw power is massive, he is an above average runner with a cannon of an arm and could be an above average fielder at shortstop. However, there are real questions about his pure hitting ability.

Both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America have him graded as a below average 40 grade hitter. They mention that he has some mechanical issues and can be overly aggressive. His 5.3% walk rate in the Arizona Complex League shows that lack of discipline. However, he is just 18 and the other tools are so impressive that if he becomes a .235 hitter with big power, he can be a starting player. It is just a long road to even get to that point.

I like the fact that they combined Cruz with Christian Franklin, who is much more of a high floor guy, but at 25, he does not have Cruz’s upside. Ronny Cruz is a swing for the fences by Mike DeBartolo. There is a decent shot he flames out by Double-A, but there is also a decent shot he explodes and becomes a top 100 prospect.

Beyond the player himself, Ronny Cruz’s journey to get to this point is a very cool human interest story. He was born in the Dominican Republic, but did not take the path most Dominican players take. Most Dominicans sign deals at 16 years old with teams. Cruz actually had a $200,000 deal lined up with a team, but it fell through.

Instead of staying in the Dominican, he moved to Florida and actually went to high school. This is a very interesting and brave decision for a guy who most likely spoke very little English at the time.

It ended up being a decision that payed off for him. After two years in high school, he ended up being drafted by the Cubs in the third round and receiving a $620,000 bonus, much more than that deal which fell through. This is despite not being healthy for a lot of his senior year.

One thing that makes Cruz raw is the lack of high end pitching he has faced. He has only been in the US for a couple years, and he missed time with injury for some of that time as well.

This is a real ball of clay that will be a fun test for whoever the Nationals next player development team is. I am not always the biggest fan of players this raw, but getting a player with this upside for Michael Soroka is a nice bet, especially when you also get a high floor player to go with it. Ronny Cruz is boom or bust, but if he hits, this could be a fantastic player.

Washington Nationals trade fan favorite Alex Call to the Los Angeles Dodgers

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Washington Nationals

Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals are trading Alex Call to the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers for a pair of fun pitching prospects

There was a bit of a lull after the Kyle Finnegan trade, but Mike DeBartolo has struck again. He has traded Alex Call to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitching prospects Eriq Swan and Sean Paul Linan. The return is stronger than the one Kyle Finnegan received

As @andrewcgolden reported, the Nationals are getting RHP Eriq Swan (2023 4th rd pick, 4.43 ERA at high-A) and RHP Sean Paul Linan (20-year-old from Colombia, 2.78 ERA mostly at high-A, did pitch at AAA this season). https://t.co/PVl66i2Dm7

— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 31, 2025

First off, it stings to lose Call. He was one of my favorite players on the team. I think he is going to have a huge moment this postseason for the Dodgers. He is just that kind of player. However, with the Nats glut of young outfielders, Call was expendable.

The two pitchers the Nats got in return both have stand out characteristics. Swan is your classic flamethrower with command issues. He is the higher ranked of the two because of that pure stuff.

While the results have not really been there yet, Swan has the kind of arm teams covet. He sits in the upper 90’s and can touch 101 MPH. Swan also has a wipeout slider that is a plus pitch to go with it. At 23, he looks like a guy who could be a monster in the bullpen. Even if he is a bit of a wild horse right now, guys with his kind of stuff don’t grow on trees.

However, Sean Paul Linan might be even more intriguing to me. He is a fascinating player mainly because his changeup is one of the better pitches in minor league baseball. It is a Devin Williams style high spin changeup that is almost like a screwball. The change is an outlier pitch and has made him an interesting piece.

He combines that with a decent low-90’s fastball that could gain more steam as he matures. Linan is only 20 years old, which is another added bonus. Linan also has a slider that is a decent third pitch. The Colombian has dominated the lower minors this year, with a 1.21 ERA in 29.2 Low-A innings and a 2.65 ERA in 37.1 High-A innings.

Crazily enough, he also made a couple appearances in Triple-A this year. He was biting off more than he could chew at that level, but still got a lot of strikeouts. Right now, he is in High-A.

This is my favorite return of the deadline so far. However, I will miss Alex Call. Go be great in LA Alex!

Follow along as the new look Nats take on the best team in all of baseball

The Nationals have shaken up their roster quite a bit this deadline. Amed Rosario, Andrew Chafin, Luis Garcia, Kyle Finnegan, Alex Call and Michael Soroka are all gone. Now there are young, hungry players coming in to try to prove themselves. It will be fun to see them in action.

The biggest change in the lineup is the fact that Paul DeJong is DH’ing and hitting third. Despite Josh Bell still being on the team, he has struggled against lefties. Otherwise, the lineup is pretty similar to a normal Nats lineup. Riley Adams is behind the plate and he will be catching Mitchell Parker.

New Look Washington Nationals Get First Test Against Best In Baseball Milwaukee Brewers

AP25193066261346_1880x1254.0.jpg

After a roster shakeup at the trade deadline, the Nats return home to take on a Brewers club that has steamrolled teams all year

After winning game one of the series in Houston, the Nats dropped the next 2 to lose the series, with the last one coming in a start in which MacKenzie Gore went 5 1⁄3 innings and allowed 6 runs. Yesterday the Nationals were off, but the fanbase was still locked in for the trade deadline, where the Nats moved Amed Rosario, Luis Garcia (the reliever), Andrew Chafin, Mike Soroka, Kyle Finnegan, and Alex Call. The only players with expiring contracts that were kept around were Josh Bell and Paul DeJong, likely due to a lack of market for both.

The question on everyone’s mind was if the Nationals were going to trade MacKenzie Gore for a haul of prospects, and in the end, the answer was no, but it sounds like they weren’t far from doing it. I believe it was the right decision to not move him unless your price was met, but that’s a discussion for later, as it’s time to check out the first opponent for the shaken-up Nationals roster.

Trips Aces

The Brewers have the best starting pitching ERA in the National League, coming into the day with a 3.39 ERA. The Nationals are gonna get the full force of their rotation as they face a few of their aces this weekend, in the grizzled veteran Brandon Woodruff on Saturday and the young phenom Jacob Misiorowski on Sunday. Even their Friday night starter, Jose Quintana, considered to be their five starter, has a 3.50 ERA, a mark which would be the best in the Nationals rotation, but is the worst in the Brewers. Needless to say, there will be no breaks for this Nats offense this weekend, as there are not many flaws in the Brewers' rotation. The rest of the Brewers roster isn’t quite as strong, as they sit middle of the pack in the MLB in both bullpen ERA and team OPS, but it hasn’t mattered yet, as they currently have the best record in baseball and are 1 game ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers will be without their young star Jackson Chourio this weekend, as he was placed on the IL after having hamstring spasms during Tuesday's game against the Cubs.

Team Stats

Team OPS: .712 (7th in NL, 17th in MLB)

Team OPS Leader: Jackson Chourio (.785)

Team HR Leader: Christian Yelich (20)

Team ERA: 3.63 (3rd in NL, 5th in MLB)

Team ERA Leader: Freddy Peralta (3.08)

Game One - Friday 6:45 PM EDT

MIL: LHP Jose Quintana - 82.1 IP, 3.50 ERA, 1.34 WHIP

Quintana has been the face of consistency for the Brewers out of the back of their rotation, going at least 5 innings and allowing minimal damage in all his starts, such as his 5-inning, 2-run performance in his last start versus the Marlins.

WSH: LHP Mitchell Parker - 113.2 IP, 4.91 ERA, 1.41 WHIP

Parker has strung together back-to-back solid starts now, with his last one being a 5 1⁄3 inning, 2-run performance against the Twins, and he’ll look to add a third in a row against a solid but not overwhelming Brewers’ lineup.

Game Two - Saturday 4:05 PM EDT

MIL: RHP Brandon Woodruff - 22.1 IP, 2.01 ERA, 0.72 WHIP

Woodruff has made 4 starts in his return to the mound in 2025, and he’s looked very impressive in that time frame. His worst outing of the year has come against the Nationals, when they scored 2 and knocked him out with 1 out in the 5th back on July 12th. We will see if they can do more of that on Saturday, or if it will look like the version of Woodruff everyone else is seeing.

WSH: RHP Jake Irvin - 126.2 IP, 4.69 ERA, 1.29 WHIP

It was the usual story for Jake Irvin in July: disaster starts followed up by phenomenal ones, as after giving up 5 runs over 3 2⁄3 innings of work against the Reds, he followed it up with 7 innings of 2-run ball against the Twins in his home state. Here’s to hoping we get the good version of Irvin on Saturday.

Game Three - Sunday 1:35 PM EDT

MIL: RHP Jacob Misiorowski - 33.1 IP, 2.70 ERA, 0.96 WHIP

Misiorowski only has 7 career starts under his belt, but he has looked mighty impressive in all 7 of them. Even in his last start against the Cubs, one of his weaker ones as he went just 4 innings and allowed 2 runs, he still looked sharp, striking out 7 batters and only giving up 3 hits. The Nats will get their first look at the young all-star on Sunday, a dangerous combination as the Nats' bats seem to rarely get hot during day games.

WSH: RHP Brad Lord - 74.1 IP, 3.27 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

Lord has looked sharp in his rotation to the Nationals rotation, going 5 1⁄3 innings and allowing just 1 run in his last start against the Astros. He isn’t striking out a lot of batters, but he’s doing exactly what is being asked of him, which is getting outs. Hopefully, the longer he is in the rotation, the deeper into starts they will allow him to go, as he is still acclimating back to a starter's schedule rather than a bullpen one.

Young Guns Ready To Roll?

A flurry of roster moves were made to make up for all the big leaguers that were traded this week, with notable names such as Robert Hassell III making their return to the big leagues. Will they be hungry to prove they belong full-time in the next 2 months, or will they go through the motions like it feels like the whole team has all season? Comment down below and let’s go Nats!

Follow along as the Nationals look to bounce back from a crushing loss last night

Last night was not a banner night for the Washington Nationals pitching staff. However, the great thing about baseball is that you have a chance to redeem yourself the next day. The Nats will try to do that this afternoon against a surging Brewers team.

Despite Jacob Young having a bobblehead today, he will not be in the lineup. Robert Hassell III will take his place batting 9th and playing centerfield. Josh Bell will return to his DH duties after getting the night off last night. Otherwise, it will be a similar offense to the one that put up nine runs last night. Jake Irvin will take the mound.

The Washington Nationals have a pitch usage problem

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Washington Nationals pitchers are throwing their bad fastballs way too much

The Washington Nationals achilles heel this season has been their pitching staff. While the offense has been maddeningly inconsistent, as a whole, the unit has actually improved from last year. The team OPS is up from .684 to .700, mainly due to an increase in the teams power production. However, they have been let down by their pitching staff. The pitching staff is both low on talent and using bad strategies.

The Results Are Ugly:

Before we dive into some of the nitty gritty stuff, we need to go over the results, and they are ugly. On the season, Washington Nationals pitchers have a 5.22 ERA. That is the second worst mark in all of baseball, only behind the Rockies, who are both historically bad and play at altitude.

The worst offenders have been the relief pitchers. As most Nationals fans are aware, the team has the worst bullpen in all of baseball. The teams 5.72 bullpen ERA is by far the worst in baseball. The next worst bullpen is the A’s, who have a 5.27 ERA. They also have the second fewest strikeouts of any bullpen, showing a lack of swing and miss stuff.

The pitching staff is a brutal combination of wild and hittable. They have allowed the second most hits and have hit the most batters in all of baseball. It has been really ugly, and a bit unexpected after last season.

Last year, the pitching staff was the best part of the team. Their 4.30 team ERA was not anything to write home about, but it was solid. Guys like Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker looked like reliable home grown starters who could give the Nats reliable innings.

However, we have seen some heavy regression from the starting rotation as well. Some of the flaws in guys like Irvin and Parker have been exposed. With that, the Nats do not have a reliable starter behind MacKenzie Gore, who has been struggling lately himself. Now we will dive into some of the bigger picture flaws.

Too Many Fastballs:

Simply put, the Nationals are throwing too many fastballs. If you combine four-seamers and sinkers, no team throws more fastballs than the Washington Nationals. The Nats are throwing fastballs 56.4% while being bottom 10 in fastball velocity. Here is an interesting article from earlier in the season about this.

The Mariners are the team that throws the second most fastballs, but their heaters have the second hardest average velocity in baseball. They are pounding fastballs, but they are doing it because their pitchers have good fastballs. The Mariners pitchers are doing a good job mixing up four-seamers and sinkers, while the Nats are more four-seam heavy.

For example, Mitchell Parker does not have a good enough four-seam fastball to be throwing it over 55% of the time. It only gets a 10.3% whiff rate and batters are hitting .271 against the pitch. Yet Parker is just pumping that four-seamer in the zone constantly.

Jake Irvin is another guy who is just pounding fastballs in the zone. Despite losing over a tick of velocity, he is still throwing fastballs over 50% of the time. This is just not smart pitching strategy from Jim Hickey and Sean Doolittle.

Some guys should be pounding fastballs, but not guys like Irvin and Parker. They are finesse pitchers who do not have overpowering velocity. Guys like Brad Lord and Jose A Ferrer throw a lot of fastballs, but they have good fastballs.

For Lord to reach his ceiling, he will need a more reliable secondary pitch, but for now he does not have one. That means he has to lean on his plus fastball, which he throws over 70% of the time. The raw fastball usage is a problem, but it is not the only one when it comes to pitch usage.

Not Enough Sliders:

In recent years, sliders have become the breaking ball of choice for most pitchers. They are used way more than curveballs by most teams. However, the Nationals remain curveball heavy and slider light.

The Nationals rank 25th in slider usage while being 6th in curveball usage. This is just another sign of the Nationals being behind the times. Sliders tend to be preferred to curveballs because they have harder, later break. They are tougher to see out of the hand.

However, guys like Irvin and Parker are throwing big, loopy curveballs that get crushed because they are easier to see out of the hand. Bumping up slider usage would be very helpful for both of those guys.

It is not a coincidence that MacKenzie Gore had his worst month of the season when he threw the fewest amount of sliders and second most four-seam fastballs. That slider was an overwhelming weapon for Gore against left handed pitching early in the season, but he has been getting away from it lately.

Another big problem is the lack of bite on these breaking pitches. In April, Gore’s curveball averaged 82 MPH and was getting a ton of whiffs. However, that velocity on the hook has fallen to 80.7 MPH and the whiffs are way down.

That lack of bite on Nats breaking pitches can be measured in the numbers. Nats sliders are the second slowest in all of baseball. That gives hitters more time to react and identify that spin.

An Overhaul Is Needed:

So why is all of this happening? Are the Nationals actively telling their pitchers to be fastball heavy? Well, looking at the data, it sure seems that way. This looks like a pitching strategy that Sean Doolittle and Jim Hickey want to implement.

Assuming that is the case, it is yet another example of bad coaching letting this team down. Most modern organizations are trying to limit fastball use, but the Nationals are throwing more than ever.

It is unclear why they slider usage and velocity is so low as well. Do the pitchers just have a hard time throwing sliders or are they be coached out of throwing them? With all the data out there, it is easier to teach guys new pitches than ever before. Pitchers go to labs to tweak their mix and add filthy new sliders all the time. We saw that with MacKenzie Gore this season. However, not enough of these guys are optimizing their pitch usage.

This is yet another reason why we need a full scale cleaning of the house. There are so many examples of this coaching staff just not being good at their jobs. This is just another case of that. The Washington Nationals need to catch up to the modern times when it comes to pitch usage.

The Washington Nationals need to find something to fight for the rest of this season

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals

Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images

Miguel Cairo and the Washington Nationals players need to figure out how not to get embarrassed like they did this weekend against the Brewers

The Washington Nationals got humiliated in front of their home fans for three straight days. That is the only way to put it. There are a number of ugly stats going around that we will dive in to. Above all else, the people in the Nationals clubhouse need to come together and ask themselves what they can do each day to avoid weekends like this the rest of the way.

At this point, we all know that the last two months of this season are going to be ugly. This team just does not have the horses to compete night in and night out. They also do not have the basic fundamentals most other teams do. However, these are still professionals and there is enough talent in that room to make sure they don’t get humiliated on a daily basis.

Miguel Cairo and the leaders on this team, if they have any, need to take this day off and figure out what they need to do to fight back. Right now, there is just not enough push back from this team. As a fan, it is difficult to watch this brand of baseball day after day. This team just sucks the life out of the fans every day.

Ugly Stats:

This series produced a lot of stats to forget. However, it only feels right to show some of them just to display how one sided this series was. The pitching staff was just totally shelled this weekend. Across the three games, they allowed 56 hits, the most in Nats history, and the most by any team since 2019.

This is the first time in Nationals history they’ve given up 56 hits in a three-game span, per Stathead. It’s the first time any team has done it since 2019.

— Spencer Nusbaum (@spencernusbaum_) August 3, 2025

It has been mind blowing to see how much this staff has been hit around. Both the starters and relievers have become wildly hittable. With the pitching being this bad, the team is out of the game in the first couple innings. When you allow 54 runs in five games, there is just no way to win.

The #Nationals have allowed 54 runs in their last 5 games. While there is still some baseball left to be played today, it is currently tied for the most runs allowed by the team in a 5-game span since they relocated. The other incident? July of 2021 before the teardown. pic.twitter.com/48NPdlVEng

— Ryan Shenker (@RyanShenker) August 3, 2025

However, it is not just the pitching that is struggling. The offense has also been inconsistent. There are some nights where they show up, but too often they struggle to get anything going.

A lot of that comes from the total lack of production from the team’s star James Wood. Since July 3rd, Wood has a .119 average with 41 strikeouts in 84 at bats. Unfortunately, it looks like the 22 year old is just being swallowed up right now. He is being overwhelmed at bat after at bat.

While the rational side of me says that Wood will be ok, it is getting harder and harder to watch this and keep the faith. Wood needs some sort of reset, whether that is an IL stint or something. Seeing a player you have so much invested in look this bad is tough to watch.

What Is Next:

With this grim series wrapped up, the Nationals are getting a much needed day off. They need to be productive in that off day. The veterans on the team need to get this group together and discuss how this team can make these last couple months as productive as they can be.

This whole season has been a wake up call for everybody in the organization. From the players to the fans to the front office to ownership. It has showed us that there is no quick fix here and big changes need to be made.

We know this coaching staff is as good as gone, but what happens to the rest of the organization? So much of it has been left to rot under the Lerner’s leadership in recent years. While the Lerner family made the first step of firing Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez, this run is showing us how much needs to be done.

Nationals fans have questions about this ownership group. Can the Lerner family lead a full scale reboot of this organization and do they even have the desire to do that? What happens this offseason is going to determine the direction of this franchise for years to come.

It is not even all about spending money on big ticket free agents anymore. There needs to be a total cultural overhaul here. When you see this little push back, you know something is deeply wrong. The Washington Nationals are a team that has limited talent but also gets out executed most nights.

The Milwaukee Brewers are really everything the Nationals should strive to be in a lot of ways. They simply play a better brand of baseball. How many times did they tag up or go first to third on a single? It was constant and so much of that is down to coaching.

The Brewers are a well oiled machine. That is why they are 67-44 with a below average payroll. They punish teams who play bad baseball and that is why they had a field day here in DC.

Nationals fans have gotten a real reality check this year. It is time to get back to the basics and try to become a smart baseball team again. The Washington Nationals need to become a lot more like the Milwaukee Brewers and learn to win on the margins.

Yesterday was not a very fun day to be a Nationals fan. The team just wrapped up a humiliating home series against the Brewers. There has been a serious lack of energy for a while. However, a solution to that problem is starting to heat up in his rehab assignment. Dylan Crews had a massive day yesterday.

After missing more than 2 months with an oblique injury, Crews is almost ready to make his return. He has now played five games for Rochester, though he has not completed the games because the Nats are playing it safe. Playing a couple complete games should be the last step before Crews comes back.

These last couple months are a big opportunity for Crews. He has faced a real learning curve adjusting to big league pitching and a hot finish to the season would be real positive news for Nats fans.

Crews’ injury actually came at a very unfortunate time because he finally looked like he was figuring it out. In his last seven games, Crews had a .994 OPS. He actually had a solid run after a brutal start to the season. In his last 30 games, Crews had a .775 OPS. With his defense and athleticism, Crews would be a highly impactful player if he could sustain a .775 OPS for a full season.

If you look at Crews’ underlying data, it shows that he got quite unlucky to start the season. His xwOBA of .343 was actually above average and was way better than his .275 wOBA. Sure, there are some warts in his offensive profile. Crews was whiffing too much, hitting the ball on the ground more than you would like and not pulling it enough, but he was still hitting the ball very hard. He was also improving on those weaknesses as the season progressed.

However, Crews’ demeanor and hard nosed style of play could have an even bigger impact than his offensive production. Since Crews left the lineup, you can see how much they miss his energy. He is one of the few guys on the team that really does the little things well.

Obviously Crews is not the only reason for this, but when he left the lineup, the Nats were 22-27, since he has been gone, the Nats are 22-40. Even if he was not hitting like we wanted him too, Dylan Crews was providing a ton of value to the Nationals.

One thing I like about Crews is that he is a winner through and through. A lot of these guys who are drafted out of high school are not used to playing in meaningful games. Crews was the face of a highly competitive LSU program for years. Winning is the expectation for Dylan Crews.

I am really excited for him to get back into the fold. Hopefully we can see that offense become more consistent while he brings that much needed juice. The Washington Nationals and their fans desperately need bright spots the rest of this season. Dylan Crews can be that bright spot we are looking for.

Washington Nationals prospect stock reports

It is time to check in on some of the Washington Nationals most notable prospects and see who is hot and who is not

About once a month, we do a little check in on the Nationals farm system to see who is doing well and who is struggling. That time has come to see how some of the Nats top youngsters did in July. It was a bit of a mixed bag with some standouts, some struggles and one notable injury.

Who Is Hot:

  1. Cristhian Vaquero, OF (A):

The first player we will look at is a guy who was a big name, but lost a lot of his shine. Cristhian Vaquero got a bonus of nearly $5 million all the way back in 2022. He was one of the standouts of that international free agent class and expectations were high.

However, Vaquero had struggled to live up to those expectations. After performing well in the DSL and in Rookie Ball, he really hit a wall in Fredericksburg. He struggled in his first 16 game taste of the level in 2023, which was understandable.

However, he had a brutal run in Low-A last year. He hit .190 with a .594 OPS and struck out over 34% of the time. Repeating the level this year, he had a better but still not great start to this season. However, he has really turned it on lately.

In July, he hit .329 with a .914 OPS. Vaquero started to tap into his big raw power, hitting three of his seven homers in July. The tools have always been there for the Cuban outfielder, it has just been about putting it all together.

Is Vaquero just hot or has a switch flipped for the talented youngster? It seems like he has been around for a long time, but Vaquero is still just 20 years old. This has been a slow burn, but we are seeing signs of life from Vaquero, who has a 118 wRC+ this season.

2. Jarlin Susana, RHP (A+):

After missing over 2 months with an elbow sprain, Jarlin Susana is back and looks as electric as ever. The burly right hander has been rehabbing in High-A, slowly building up. He has looked fantastic and has quieted the doubts about his injury. The fastball is still sitting at 100 MPH and his slider is as deadly as ever.

Jarlin Susana made his return to the mound after missing a couple months with a Grade 1 UCL sprain. Threw just two innings (and dealt with rain), but fastball averaged north of 100 MPH in his 34 pitches.

Each of his three starts have been better and longer than the previous one. His first time out, Susana only went two innings, where he allowed a run while walking two. The next time out, Susana allowed two runs in three innings. However, he was absolutely electric, striking out 8 and walking nobody.

He put it all together in his most recent start, going four scoreless with six strikeouts and no walks. That is now seven straight innings with no walks for him. If he can stay in the zone, the sky is the limit for the final piece of the Juan Soto trade.

With Travis Sykora hurt, Susana is now the best healthy Nats pitching prospect, despite Alex Clemmey giving him a run for his money. With Susana being built up, his next start will likely be in Double-A, where he started the season. He held his own at that level, but had trouble with walks.

Hopefully the big man can stay healthy and stay in the zone. He has done that in his last couple starts. Jarlin Susana is so much fun to watch pitch.

3. Alex Clemmey, LHP (A+)

The Nationals have quite a pretty stacked High-A rotation following the trade deadline, but once Jarlin Susana moved to AA, Alex Clemmey will be the ace of that staff. Clemmey is an interesting prospect because he has such extreme strengths and significant weaknesses.

Despite being such a flawed pitcher, he has put up excellent results in High-A due to his amazing strengths. He has a 2.66 ERA in 81.2 innings with 105 strikeouts. Batters are hitting just .193 against him.

Ranked #5 prospect in the Nationals system by MLB Pipeline,
@ClemmeyAlex⁩ pitched 6.0 innings of 2-hit shutout ball Saturday.

He’s now at 16.2 scoreless innings with 17 Ks and a .109 avg over his last 3 starts. pic.twitter.com/plMrDyoLdb

— TheNatsReport ⚾ (@TheNatsReport) August 3, 2025

He has been particularly excellent in his last 10 starts, where he has a 1.78 ERA in 50.2 innings. However, if you have been following Clemmey long enough, you know walks are a problem and they remain a serious issue.

This season, Clemmey is walking 6.31 batters per nine innings. That is not viable for a starting pitcher and is barely viable for a reliever. Clemmey is just not a natural strike thrower. His funky mechanics make him tough to hit, but it also makes it tough for him to throw strikes.

His stuff and deception should make him at least a reliever, but he needs to find the zone more. If Clemmey can become even a mediocre strike thrower his stock will go through the roof. Even with bad command, he is still doing well.

4. Sam Petersen, OF (A+)

We wrote about Petersen not too long ago, but he has been doing too well to leave off this list. The University of Iowa product is just laying waste to High-A pitching despite playing in a pitcher friendly environment.

— Wilmington Blue Rocks (@WilmBlueRocks) August 3, 2025

Petersen had an outstanding July in Wilmington, hitting .317 with a 1.046 OPS in 20 games. He hit four homers and had almost as many walks as strikeouts. The 8th round pick has been the best performer of the Nationals 2024 draft class.

Along with his performance, Petersen has some loud tools. He is a power/speed guy who is performing very well. A trip to Double-A should be coming soon. Double-A will be a big test for him and if he performs there, his stock will go through the roof.

Stock Down:

The Top of the 2024 Draft Class

For the stock down portion, it is really just the top three picks in the Nationals 2024 class. Seaver King, Caleb Lomavita and Luke Dickerson have all struggled badly lately. For King and Dickerson, these struggles are extended, while Lomavita just had a down month.

  1. Seaver King

For King, his season has been concerning on many levels. A reach inside the top 10, King is incredibly raw for a college prospect. After an up and down start at High-A, where he was roughly an average hitter for the level, he got called up to AA.

It seemed like a premature call up for a guy who had not mastered the High-A level, where he had a .687 OPS. That has proven to be the case so far. In 189 AA at bats, King has a .228 average and a .584 OPS. Those are really ugly numbers for a top 10 pick.

In July, he hit .221 with a .568 OPS. His sub .300 slugging percentage for the month really stood out to me because King was supposed to have solid power, even if a lot of that power potential was unrealized. Instead, he went a whole month with no homers and just 2 RBI’s.

The problem for King is his approach. He is not walking much at all and hitting the ball on the ground way too much. It has been a really disappointing first full season for King and it has been very worrying.

2. Caleb Lomavita

The Nationals next pick was catcher Caleb Lomavita. His profile is similar to King’s in a lot of ways. He is a great athlete, with big upside but his approach is worrying and he hits a ton of ground balls.

For the first few months, he was pretty performing well in Wilmington. His OPS was hovering around .750, which is good given the offensive environment. However, he struggled in July, posting a .607 OPS.

He only walked twice all month, meaning his OBP was just .269 for the month despite an alright .246 average. Lomavita has power potential, but he has only hit three homers all season. A lot of that is due to his 52% ground ball rate.

For the season, Lomavita has a .700 OPS, which is actually 10% better than league average. However, he is not exactly dominating the level the way a guy like Sam Petersen is. Lomavita is another big project despite being a college player selected inside the top 40 picks.

3. Luke Dickerson

Luke Dickerson had a ton of hype entering the season after signing the largest bonus of any player drafted outside the first round. For a while, he was living up to that hype with a strong start. Dickerson looked like a guy who was ready to be a top 100 prospect. However, that has all come crashing down lately.

After putting up a .523 OPS in June at the Low-A level, things did not get any better in July. He put up a .520 OPS on the month. All of that helium and momentum Dickerson had is now gone. He has a .620 OPS at the Low-A level, which is very disappointing for a guy who the Nationals basically built their 2024 draft class around.

There are some reasons not to give up though. A couple months ago, he got hit in the hand and missed a few games. Since then, he has not looked the same, leading me to wonder if he is playing hurt. Dickerson also takes his walks and does not strike out an egregious amount.

He is also a guy who was a multi-sport athlete in high school who is just now focusing on baseball full time. A positive spin would be that this is a guy playing hurt that has solid underlying data and has more room to grow than his peers. However, the numbers are still concerning.

Big Picture Outlook:

With the draft and deadline wrapped up, a lot has changed in the Nats farm system. There are a lot of new faces and guys to watch. Unfortunately, there has also been plenty of bad news too. With Travis Sykora undergoing Tommy John Surgery and the top of the 2024 class struggling, there is a lot of pressure on this new draft class.

On paper, this 2025 class is much better than the badly struggling ‘24 class. However, we need to see these guys in action. Of the tops guys, only Ethan Petry is likely to play this season, as the rest are high schoolers.

Despite some of the struggles at the top of the system, there have been some fun guys balling out. The re-emergence of Vaquero is a fun storyline, as is the rise of Sam Petersen. Hopefully the farm can finish the year strong and this 2025 class can help make the Washington Nationals farm system one of the better ones in the game next year.
