The New York Mets made their first National League Championship Series appearance since losing the World Series in 2015.
After finishing with a record of 89-73 and coming in second place in the National League East, the Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies as underdogs in the postseason before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets came into the offseason after contending for a World Series berth and signed the top free agent Juan Soto from the New York Yankees.
While the Mets have made plenty of moves already this offseason, MLB Analyst Robert Flores reported that the Mets are pursuing another star player from the San Diego Padres.
“The New York Mets, according to our Jon Heyman, have reportedly begun discussions with the Padres about a potential deal that would send Dylan Cease to Queens.” Flores said via MLB Network on ‘X.’#MLBNHotStove reacts to the Mets and Padres reportedly discussing a potential deal for RHP Dylan Cease. pic.twitter.com/womtNQ7Koc

Cease is one of the newest players being involved in trade rumors, and the Mets reportedly are pursuing him for the 2025 season.
Although the Mets have spent a ton of money this offseason already, adding Cease would give the team yet another boost as they try to win their first World Series title since 1986.
Cease came into the league in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox where he played five seasons before going to the Padres in 2024.
In 2024, Cease started 33 games where he held a record of 14-11 with a 3.47 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 189.1 innings pitched.
The Mets will be a team to keep an eye on for Cease if the Padres do end up trading him before the start of the season.

The New York Mets appeared in their first National League Championship Series since losing in the World Series in 2015.
After the long and unexpected postseason run, the Mets went into the offseason and made a splash by signing free agent Juan Soto from the New York Yankees to a 15-year deal worth $765 million.
The Mets made other acquisitions as well, including pitchers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas, and outfielder Jose Siri.
While the Mets have made plenty of significant moves this offseason, they have yet to resolve the situation with free agent first baseman Pete Alonso.
One MLB analyst recently called out Alonso to make a decision.
“The choice is his, but the ending to this saga always seemed like it was painted in orange and blue. It’s time for Alonso to accept that his destiny is calling him back to Queens,” Deesha Thosar said, via FOX Sports: MLB.With his options dwindling in free agency, it’s long past time for Pete Alonso to decide what is most important: his legacy or his contract.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) January 30, 2025
It appears Alonso hasn’t signed yet due to him wanting more money than any team is willing to give him.
With the 2025 season right around the corner, Thosar said Alonso should just come back to the Mets.
Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career for the organization, and in 2024 the fan favorite played in all 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
Many people thought Alonso would be back with the Mets in 2025 all along, so it will be something to watch to see how it all plays out.

The New York Mets made the postseason for the first time since 2022 after finishing with a record of 89-73 and second in the National League East.
After making a run to the National League Championship Series, the Mets went into the offseason and made likely one of the biggest moves in franchise history by signing free agent Juan Soto.
After being in talks with multiple different teams, Soto signed a 15-year contract worth $765 million.
The Mets brought in one big free agent but have not re-signed first baseman Pete Alonso.
MLB analyst and former Mets GM Jim Duquette warned what losing Alonso could mean.
“They still need Pete, or somebody like him, to protect the investment that they have in Juan Soto in particular,” Duquette said, via MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM."They still need Pete, or somebody like him, to protect the investment they have in Juan Soto."@JimDuquetteGM on how important Pete Alonso is to the #Mets:#LGM

Duquette questions the ability of Mark Vientos to protect Soto in the lineup and believes that the Mets need Alonso to fill that role.
Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career with New York.
In 2024, Alonso played 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
With the 2025 season getting closer, Alonso will be a name to keep an eye on to see if he can come to terms with the Mets or if he decides to sign with a different team.
The Mets will be seeking their first division title since 2015 in their first season with Soto on the roster.

The New York Mets made the postseason for the first time since 2022 after finishing with a record of 89-73 and coming in second place in the National League East.
With an offseason that saw the team acquire the top free agent Juan Soto from the New York Yankees, Mets fans are likely excited for the 2025 season.
The offseason has seen many players change teams, and the 2025 Baseball Hall of Fame class was announced.
Ichiro Suzuki missed a unanimous induction by one vote, and former Mets GM Steve Phillips revealed a regret about Suzuki from 2001.
“Some level of regret that I couldn’t convince ownership for a couple million more dollars,” Phillips said via MLB Network on ‘X.’.@StevePhillipsGM and the Mets were in the mix for Ichiro when he was posted prior to the 2001 seasonpic.twitter.com/il5J8g530T![]()

Phillips revealed that the Mets could have possibly acquired Suzuki in 2001 if he had gotten a couple more million dollars from ownership as the team had around $11 million and Suzuki signed for around $13 million.
While it is clear how great of a career Suzuki had in Seattle, Phillips wonders what his career could have looked like if he had gone to New York instead.
Suzuki was a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee after an amazing career that included playing 19 seasons for three different teams.
Some career stats for Suzuki include a .311 batting average with 3,089 hits, 117 home runs, 780 RBIs, 1,080 stolen bases, and a .757 OPS.
Suzuki had over 200 hits in each of his first 10 seasons in the MLB, and he won the Most Valuable Player Award along with the Rookie of the Year Award in 2001 with the Mariners.

The New York Mets have followed up their postseason run to the National League Championship Series with a big offseason.
After the postseason ended, all eyes turned to top free agent Juan Soto.
While the process seemed to take forever, the Mets eventually came out on top and signed Soto to a 15-year deal worth $765 million.
The Mets got their man, but there are nine batters in the lineup and one of their top hitters remains an unsigned free agent.
New York sports icon Tiki Barber revealed who he believes is to blame for the Pete Alonso situation.
“He got talked into doing something stupid. So, I blame Pete,” Barber said, via WFAN Sports Radio."He got talked into doing something stupid. So, I blame Pete"

— WFAN Sports Radio (@WFAN660) January 17, 2025
The 30-year-old first baseman has played all six seasons of his MLB career with the Mets.
Barber said Alonso’s mistake was hiring Scott Boras, thinking that the agent could make him one of the highest-paid players in baseball.
Though Alonso is a very good player, he is not on the same level as Soto, and setting his expectations so high could have ruined his chances of returning to the Mets.
In 2024, Alonso played all 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
Alonso will be one free agent to keep an eye on as his market could take a turn after he offered to accept a three-year contract from the Mets that did not result in a deal.

The New York Mets were one of the biggest stories in the 2024 postseason with a run to the National League Championship Series.
After the playoffs ended, the Mets were one of the biggest stories in the offseason as they signed free agent Juan Soto to a deal worth $765 million over 15 years.
Not only did the Mets spend a ton of money on Soto, but they have remained aggressive by acquiring multiple players who could play a role in 2025.
The newest addition to the Mets roster is relief pitcher A.J. Minter, who will join the Mets after playing for the rival Atlanta Braves.
“The Mets are in agreement with A.J. Minter pending physical. Deal is for 2 years, $22M,” MLB insider Joel Sherman wrote on X.The Mets are in agreement with AJ Minter pending physical. Deal is for 2 years, $22M
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) January 17, 2025
Minter has played all eight seasons of his MLB career with the Braves.
In 2024, Minter appeared in 39 games and was 5-4 with a 2.62 ERA, one save and 35 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched.
Minter is 31 years old and had a couple of dominant seasons, including in 2020 when he posted a 0.83 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched.
The Mets have acquired multiple pitchers this offseason and will be looking to win their first National League East title since 2015, when they lost the World Series.
After the Soto signing, it appears the Mets are all in on the win-now strategy, and they will try again to win their first World Series title since 1986.

The New York Mets followed up their Cinderella postseason run to the National League Championship Series by signing the top free agent in this year’s class this offseason.
After signing Juan Soto from the New York Yankees, the Mets appear to have a solid offensive lineup heading into the 2025 season.
Along with Soto, the Mets have signed some other notable free agents including relief pitcher Clay Holmes, starting pitcher Frankie Montas, and outfielder Jose Siri.
Although the Mets got the big free agent signing they were looking for, a long-tenured Mets player appears like he may not be with the team in 2025.
According to Andy Martino via FOX Sports: MLB on ‘X,’ the Mets expect first baseman Pete Alonso to sign with another team via free agency this offseason.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) January 16, 2025
Alonso has been one of the free agent players being tracked closely as of late, and most reports suggested that he would end up signing with the Mets for 2025.
The tides have turned now with the report from Martino, and it will be interesting to see what other teams pursue Alonso.
Alonso came into the league in 2019 and has played all six seasons of his MLB career with the Mets.
In 2024, Alonso had a bit of a down season for his standards, but he still batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS.
Although Alonso’s numbers were down in 2024, he is still a home run threat every time he steps to the plate, and plenty of teams will likely be interested in the right-handed power hitter.

The New York Mets made the postseason in 2024 with a record of 89-73 after missing the playoffs in 2023.
After a loss in the National League Championship Series, the Mets have been busy this offseason to improve their roster for the 2025 season.
The Mets signed the top free agent Juan Soto of the New York Yankees to a 15-year deal worth $765 million, along with a handful of other acquisitions.
Although the Mets have made plenty of moves this offseason, one of their long-time players Pete Alonso remains unsigned as a free agent.
MLB Analyst Jeff Joyce revealed his strong belief on where Alonso will sign before the 2025 season.
“I think if we’ve learned anything, Pete Alonso really wants to be a New York Met,” Joyce said via MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM."I wouldn't be stunned to see Alonso…stay with the #Mets."@JeffJoyce19 on a possible contract idea for the Polar Bear:

— MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (@MLBNetworkRadio) January 11, 2025
It appears from recent reports that Alonso is seeking a longer deal than the Mets are willing to give him at this time, which has caused negotiations to extend longer than both parties probably want.
Joyce mentions that Alonso could sign a shorter contract and use the 2025 season as a type of ‘prove it,’ year and then get a bigger deal next offseason.
Alonso came into the league in 2019 with the Mets and has played all six seasons of his career with the team.
Joyce believes that Alonso wants to remain a part of the Mets’ organization and that he will end up signing some kind of contract with the team.
Alonso will be a name to keep an eye on as the offseason continues until he makes his decision on where to sign for the 2025 season.

The New York Mets made a splash in the postseason by making a run to the National League Championship Series, and they followed that up by making another splash in the offseason.
After making the surprising postseason run, the Mets followed up by signing the top free agent in this year’s class Juan Soto to a deal worth $765 million over 15 years.
Along with Soto, the Mets have made several other acquisitions this offseason including relief pitcher Clay Holmes, starting pitcher Frankie Montas, and outfielder Jose Siri.
The Mets payroll had a significant change from the 2024 season, but it is not the change that most people would likely expect.
According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman on ‘X,’ the Mets’ current payroll is down the most from last season despite Soto’s record-breaking $765 million deal.
Wouldn’t have guessed this: Mets current payroll is down the most despite Juan Soto’s record $765M deal https://t.co/jaFNgeuRR8
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 12, 2025
The Mets’ payroll decreased by almost $78 million from the 2024 season, which is the biggest change in Major League Baseball.
Although the Mets decreased their payroll by $78 million, they still have the fourth-highest payroll in the league behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees.
The Mets had multiple players from last year’s team who were or are free agents this offseason, which could be a contributing factor to their payroll reduction.
Nonetheless, most people would likely be surprised to see the Mets have the biggest reduction in payroll after the signing of Soto.
The Mets will take their new and improved roster and try to make their first World Series appearance since 2015 and win their first World Series title since 1986.
