Meet the Mets

We’re 29 hours away from hearing Gary, Keith, and Ron on air for the first time in 2026, as the Mets’ spring training opener is set for a 1:10 PM EST first pitch tomorrow in Port St. Lucie. That’s a good excuse to take another look at the broadcast schedule for the Mets’ spring training games.

The Mets released their 2026 promotional schedule.

As several Mets infielders learn new positions, they’re playing a variation of HORSE during infield drills.

Speaking of infielders learning new positions, Brett Baty talked about the work he’s doing in right field as the Mets weigh their options for that position ahead of the 2026 season.

Francisco Lindor says he respects Steve Cohen’s decision to make the Mets captain-free for the remainder of the time that he owns the team.

Jonah Tong is adding a cutter to his repertoire this season.

This isn’t Mike Tauchman’s first time competing with a blue chip prospect for a spot on an Opening Day roster, as he started spring training in 2023 with the Cubs in a competition that included former Mets prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Howie Rose will call fewer Mets games this season, as he will not travel for road games. Should the Mets make the postseason, though, he plans to call every one of those games.

Carlos Mendoza says the Mets’ approach to the major league implementation of the ABS strike zone challenge system is to let the players challenge as much as they want in spring training so the team can see who’s good enough at it to do it in real games.

The Mets signed right-handed pitcher Bryce Conley to a minor league deal.

Former Mets center fielder Juan Lagares announced his retirement from playing baseball.

The Mets released minor league player Jefry De Los Santos.

Around the National League East

Battery Power writes that a healthy Austin Riley could be the key that unlocks Atlanta’s lineup.

The Good Phight looks at the relatively uninspiring options if the Phillies were to carry a third left-handed pitcher in their bullpen.

Federal Baseball writes that Landon Harmon is one of several breakout candidates in the Nationals’ farm system.

Robby Snelling, a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball, will start the Marlins’ Grapefruit League opener against the Mets tomorrow.

Around Major League Baseball

The Brewers extended Pat Murphy’s contract as the team’s manager through the 2028 season with an option for 2029.

Owners have been pouring money into a reserve fund in anticipation of locking out the players when baseball’s current collective bargaining agreement expires.

Chris Bassitt, who serves on MLBPA’s executive subcommittee, spoke about owners’ desire to get a salary cap and said, “having suppressed salaries across the league so owners can make more money is not the answer.”

Speaking of the union, Ken Rosenthal writes that Bruce Meyer must expand his capacity to lead following his unanimous election as the organization’s interim executive director following the resignation of Tony Clark.

ESPN is launching Women’s Sports Sundays, which will feature games from the WNBA and NWSL airing in the Sunday night slot that was vacated by the network’s decision to move on from Sunday Night Baseball.

Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have pleaded not guilty to the accusations they’re facing in the fraud case that alleges they colluded with sports bettors to rig bets.

The Marlins defeated the Mets 2-1 in the opening game of Grapefruit League play. The Mets were no-hit in the contest until the fifth and threatened late, but were unable to pull out the late-inning comeback.

  • Brandon Waddell pitched two scoreless (and smooth and easy) innings to kick things off for the Mets.
  • The Marlins scored their first run in part thanks to an error by first baseman Jose Rojas in the fourth trying to corral a poor throw from Bo Bichette at third base.
  • Austin Barnes broke through with a single for the Mets’ first hit in the fifth.
  • The Marlins added a run on a Christopher Morel sacrifice fly in the sixth.
  • The Mets loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and a pitch clock violation walk in the eighth and A.J. Ewing hit a sacrifice fly for the Mets’ only run.
  • Ewing also had a nifty outfield assist in the top of the ninth, nabbing Colby Shade trying to get to third base.

The Mets will play their crosstown rival Yankees in Tampa tomorrow at 1:05pm ET.

The ball was flying at George M. Steinbrenner with the Mets blasting four home runs to defeat the Yankees 6-4 in the spring version of the Subway Series. On the other side of the ball the team’s pitching mostly held up well especially considering they faced quite a few Yankee starters for a few at bats in the beginning of the game.

  • Justin Hagenman got the start and gave up a solo home run to José Caballero. His final line was 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, and 3 K.
  • DH Jared Young got the scoring started in the second with a solo home run off Luis Gil.
  • The team got production out of their catchers. Both Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger hit solo home runs
  • Carson Benge went 0-for-3 in his spring debut
  • JT Schwartz hit a three-run home run in the eighth to provide a cushion.
  • The Mets pitching held the Yankees off the board until the bottom of the eighth when Brian Metoyer gave up a three-run home run to Kenedy Corona.
  • The Yankees got the tying runs on in the ninth but Carlos Guzman nailed down the save.

Next up the Mets will face the Blue Jays at 1:07 pm ET in sunny Dunedin, Florida.

Meet the Mets

The Mets got their first win of spring yesterday against the Yankees, by a 6-4 margin. Jared Young, Luis Torrens, and Hayden Senger all hit solo home runs, and JT Schwartz provided the lion’s share of the offense with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Justin Hagenman looked good in his 2.1 innings, giving up just one run on two hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. The New York Mets (2-1) defeated the Toronto Blue Jays (1-2) by a score of 4-3 today at TD Bank Park in Dunedin.

  • Clay Holmes started the game for the Mets, and threw 57 pitches over three and two-thirds innings. Holmes surrendered a long two-run home run to Kazuma Okamoto for the only runs against him. Holmes struck out three, walked two, and allowed just the one hit. As Holmes is playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, he is likely a little ahead of the pack in terms of stamina.
  • Nick Morabito, the lone Mets’ prospect added to the 40-Man Roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft late last year, drove drove in Jackson Cluff for the Mets’ first run and then scored on a MJ Melendez double to tie the game in the third inning.
  • In the sixth, Ronny Mauricio led off with a bloop double. Jacob Reimer replaced him on the base paths and scored the Mets’ third run when Vidal Bruján stole second and the ball got away from Toronto, allowing Reimer to round third.
  • Bruján left the game after injuring himself sliding into second on that same play. It appears to be a hand injury, the extend of which is not known as of publication time.
  • Tobias Myers threw two and a third innings of scoreless ball, allowing three hits and striking out three.
  • Cristian Pache hit a towering solo home run in the seventh to put the Mets up 4-2.
  • Ryan Lambert, who our Lukas Vlahos wrote a glowing season preview of, was impressive in his one inning of work, hitting 99 MPH on the radar gun, and striking out three and allowing just one hit to Carlos Mendoza (not the Mets’ manager).
  • The Mets were up 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Trey McGough gve up a walk, a double, a single to lead to a run scoring. McGough struck out veteran Eloy Jiménez before Jay Harry hit into a 3-3-2 double play to end the ballgame.

The Mets were bitten by the walk on Tuesday afternoon, and as a result had to settle for a 6-6 tie with the Astros at Clover Park. Each of the Mets’ ten pitchers issued a walk, and the team issued 13 walks in total on the afternoon—Houston walked just four. That, as Gary Cohen mentioned, is not a recipe for winning baseball games. The Mets ended up with seven hits on the day, while the Astros had nine hits of their own.

  • Jack Wenninger pitched two scoreless innings in his first spring outing. The right-hander escaped a bases loaded jam in the first and a one-out double in the second to keep Houston off the board.
  • The Mets jumped all over George Costanza Jason Alexander in the first inning. Juan Soto poked a ball through the infield for a single, and Bo Bichette rocked a liner off Alexander that ended up going for an infield single. Mike Tauchman, in his first at-bat as a Met, launched a three-run home run on a change up that just cleared the right field wall. Two batters later, Ronny Mauricio hit a solo home run to give New York an early four-run lead. Alexander did not make it out of the first inning for Houston.
  • The Mets extended their lead to five after Marcus Semien doubled, advanced to third on an out, and scored on a Bichette sacrifice fly.
  • Jonathan Pintaro pitched a scoreless third but allowed a run in the fourth and could not escape the frame. He pitched 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball, as he walked two, struck out one, and allowed one hit. Jefry Yan closed out the fourth.
  • Huascar Brazobán and Austin Warren pitched scoreless, hitless innings in the fifth and sixth, respectively. Brazobán struck out one and walked one, while Warren walked a batter.
  • The Mets added an insurance run in the sixth on an A.J. Ewing sacrifice fly, which scored Austin Barnes, who led off the inning with a double.
  • Daniel Duarte had a rough go of it in the seventh, allowing three earned runs on three hits, with a walk and a strikeout in 1/3 of an inning. Bryce Conley was called upon to close out the seventh, and he did so while issuing one walk and striking out one batter in 2/3 of an inning.
  • The Mets narrowly avoided allowing a run in the eighth, as Jose Ramos threw out Lucas Spence at home on a Brice Matthews fly ball to right field.
  • The inning ending double play would turn out to be huge, because things got dicey in the ninth with Josh Blum on the mound. Blum loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and exited with one out. Colton Cosper came in and allowed a run to score on a force out, and Spence drove in the game-tying run on a two-out, two-strike single. The Mets went down meekly in the ninth.
  • In all, the Mets got one hit apiece from Semien, Soto, Bichette, Tauchman, Mauricio, Barnes, and Tyrone Taylor.

The New York Mets (2-2-1) dropped a listless game to the St. Louis Cardinals (3-2), 6-0 at Clover Park in St. Lucie. The Mets scattered eight hits, but couldn’t bring any across in their fifth game of spring.

  • Jonah Tong started for the Mets and, after looking strong in the first two innings, faded in the third and gave up a three-run home run to Nolan Gorman to put the Cardinals up by a trey.
  • The Mets threatened in the fourth, when a trio of 26th man candidates reached base via single: Christian Arroyo, Vidal Bruján, and Cristian Pache all reached base with two outs before a fourth player in the same category, Grae Kessinger, popped straight up to the catcher to end the inning.
  • Top outfield prospect Carson Benge went 3-3 with three singles.
  • Scoreless outings from Luis García, Adbert Alzolay, and Douglas Orellana kept the game within three until Nick Burdi took over in the sixth. Nelson Velázquez doubled to lead off the frame and a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases. A Chase Davis single to the right side plated two more, and St. Louis was up 5-0.
  • Joe Jacques didn’t fare much better in the seventh, giving up a run on three hits.
  • Of note to Cardinals fans was switch-pitcher (yes, you read that right) Jurrangelo Cijntje tossing two scoreless innings from the right side.
  • A.J. Ewing doubled to lead off the eighth in his second at-bat of the game, but was stranded by Cijntje.
  • Matt Turner and Aaron Rozek finished the game for the Mets, each tossing a scoreless frame.

The Mets take on the Astros in West Palm Beach tomorrow at 1:05pm. Nolan McLean will make his spring debut against Houston.

The Mets cruised to victory in a road game as they visited the Astros in West Palm Beach this afternoon, and Nolan McLean was unsurprisingly the star of the show in his first spring training appearance.

  • McLean struck out six, walked one, and gave up just one hit in four scoreless innings of work.
  • Robert Stock was nearly as impressive as McLean, as he blanked the Astros for three innings himself as he took over for McLean. And he struck out six batters without walking anyone and gave up just one hit.
  • Anderson Severino and Ben Simon threw a scoreless inning each to finish the shutout.
  • Tyrone Taylor hit a three-run home run early in the game as he got the start in center field.
  • Marcus Semien went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
  • Bo Bichette went 1-for-3 with a double.

The Mets’ next Grapefruit League game is set for 1:05 PM EST tomorrow as they visit the Cardinals in Jupiter. Freddy Peralta is set to make his spring training debut in that one, and your only option for tuning in will be the Cardinals’ radio broadcast if you are so inclined.

The Mets decimated the Cardinals in a victory on the road in Jupiter this afternoon, and Freddy Peralta started his Mets tenure about as good as one would have hoped.

  • Freddy Peralta threw 29 pitches in three perfect innings, collecting three strikeouts in his appearance.
  • Devin Williams made his first appearance as well, going one inning and giving up one hit. That hit was a solo home run to top Cardinals prospect JJ Wetherholt.
  • Justin Hagenman went three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out four.
  • Huascar Brazobán and Brett Banks each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game.
  • MJ Melendez was the offensive star of the game, going 2-for-3, both hits being home runs and driving in four runs.
  • AJ Ewing had another great appearance, going 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and a walk.
  • Cristian Pache went 3-for-3 with a double, and he scored twice.
  • Juan Soto went 1-for-3, hitting a double off Quinn Matthews.
  • Austin Barnes went 1-for-3, hitting a two-run double.
  • Kevin Parada went 1-for-1, driving in two runs and walking twice.

The Mets will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM EST, taking on the Washington Nationals back at Clover Park. Tobias Myers will make his second appearance of the spring, and his first start. You can actually watch that game on television, as it’s being broadcast on SNY.

Freddy Peralta named Mets’ Opening Day Starter

Carlos Mendoza officially announced Freddy Peralta as the Mets’ Opening Day starter earlier today. The skipper said it was “pretty clear” Peralta would be pitching at the front of the team’s rotation when he was acquired this offseason, adding “he earned it”.

Peralta was arguably the centerpiece move for a Mets offseason that saw the team part with long-time fan favorites like Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Edwin Díaz and add Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., and Jorge Polanco, among others. The team traded top prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams to acquire Peralta, as well as Tobias Myers, in January. Peralta, who served as the Brewers’ ace last season, led all NL starters with 17 wins and posted a 2.70 ERA, a 3.64 FIP, and a 1.08 WHIP, with 204 strikeouts in 176 2/3 innings. Peralta was an All-Star and finished fifth in Cy Young voting in 2025.

Peralta will become the fifth Mets pitcher to start on Opening Day over the last five season, following Clay Holmes, Jose Quintana, Max Scherzer, and Tylor Megill. Prior to that, Jacob deGrom started Opening Day from 2019-2021 for New York.

Peralta will presumably face Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, when the Mets face the Pirates on March 26 at Citi Field to kick off the 2026 MLB season.

The Mets fell behind early in today’s game against the Nationals at Clover Park, and despite late attempts to comeback, they ultimately fell to the Nationals 3-2.

  • Tobias Myers started for the Mets after looking solid in his first spring training appearance earlier this week. He looked strong once again today, as he tossed three innings of one-run ball while striking out four and walking one. His only blemish came in his final inning of work, as he surrendered two one-out hits (a single and double, respectively) and then allowed one of the runs to score on an RBI groundout. Still, it was overall another promising appearance, as Myers continues to look like he will be a solid piece for the Mets’ pitching staff this year.
  • After Myers departed, Craig Kimbrel and Adbert Alzolay—both of whom are attempting to make the major league bullpen—surrendered runs to make it 3-0 Nationals. Kimbrel pitched the fourth inning and gave up a double to Brady House, who would go on to score on a sacrifice fly, and the veteran closer also walked two in his inning of work. Alzolay, on the other hand, also gave up a double to House to lead off the sixth, and he followed that with a wild pitch to move him to third. A groundball fielder’s choice force out at home gave him a chance to get out of the frame unscathed, but a stolen base and a single from Warming Bernabel instead gave Washington their third run of the afternoon.
  • Luis García, Nick Burdi, Austin Warren, and Joey Gerber also pitched in the game, and they all tossed scoreless innings.
  • Some notable tidbits from the starting position players in today’s game: Brett Baty started at first base and had no noticeable blemishes there, and Michael Tauchman continued his solid spring by hitting a double. Still, the majority of the bats were held quiet by the Nationals pitching staff in the first six innings of the game.
  • The Amazins finally broke through for their first run in the seventh, when Mark Vientos followed a Jared Young walk with an RBI double against Paxton Schultz. They followed that with another run in the eighth against former Met Dicky Lovelady, as Ji Hwan Bae and Antonio Jimenez led off the frame with singles and Nick Morabito subsequently drove in a run with a one-out double. In both cases, however, the bats failed to add on additional runs.
  • The Mets went on to load the bases in the ninth on two walks and an error by second baseman Cayden Wallace, and they had the chance to win the game with two outs. But Jacob Reimer instead flew out on the first pitch he saw, and the game concluded.

The Mets will be at home once again tomorrow afternoon. They face off against the Astros at 1:10 PM on SNY, with Clay Holmes taking the mound.

Meet the Mets

Tobias Myers had another solid outing yesterday, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Mets to victory against the Nationals.

While Myers’s exact role for the 2026 Mets continues to be unclear, he has looked and felt great thus far in spring.

Brett Baty played first base in yesterday’s game and spoke about the adjustments he is making at the new position.

Craig Kimbrel is hoping that a new pitch will help the veteran reliever make the Mets’ roster out of spring training.

Brandon Nimmo has once again opened up about his departure from the Mets.

Around the National League East

MLB.com previewed the NL East race for 2026.

Top Phillies prospect Aidan Miller has a back issue that will cause him to miss an undetermined amount of time.

Spencer Strider made his spring debut yesterday as he seeks to bounce back from a rough 2025 campaign.

The injury bug has hit the Marlins, as Kyle Stowers will miss 1-2 weeks with a hamstring strain while prospect Aiva Arquette will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks after undergoing core muscle surgery.

The Nationals are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with Rule 5 draft pick Griff McGarry.

Around Major League Baseball

Aaron Judge is determined to help lead the USA to victory in the World Baseball Classic.

An old friend has found a new home, as Starling Marte has agreed to a one-year deal with the Royals.

Konnor Griffin could join the short list of teenage major leaguers this year.

Dodgers starter Blake Snell does not expect to be ready for opening day.

Xavier Isaac is back in game action after undergoing brain surgery last summer.

Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue

Brian Salvatore and Chris McShane discussed some of the early spring training action on the latest episode of Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World Series.

I previewed the 2026 season of Carson Benge, in which he is likely to have a prominent role on the major league team sooner or later.

Linus Lawrence provided 2026 previews for Joey Gerber and Jonah Tong.

This Date in Mets History

Tom Seaver demanded a new contract before reporting to camp—a signal of the tensions that would continue to linger between the two sides until their eventual divorce—on this date in 1976.

Jose Rojas looks to follow up a strong 2025 in the minors

There’s a term that you hear tossed around baseball circles a lot, especially this time of year: Quad-A player. This means someone who is probably better than Triple-A talent but isn’t necessarily cut out for the majors, either. There tends to be subsets of Quad-A players, including but not limited to the defensive whiz who can’t really hit a lick but is phenomenal with the glove, the pitcher whose movement plays on the farm but not under the bright lights, and the corner guy with power.

Jose Rojas is a corner guy with power in the model of Val Pascucci, Nick Evans, Mike Hessman, and other remnants of the 2008-2013 Mets. Rojas has all the markings of this type: a few seasons of slugging over .500, success in Asia, multiple stints in various latin winter leagues, and limited opportunities and even more limited success on the big stage.

On the surface, this is yet another depth signing, an opportunity to squeeze a little juice out of a player that may not have a ton more to give. But for the Mets, there’s a little more here because of their particular roster construction. While not his primary position, Rojas actually has the second most minor league reps at first base of anyone in camp behind Ryan Clifford, and has one more major league game at first as does the Mets’ probable Opening Day first baseman, Jorge Polanco, with two.

On top of that, Rojas’s 2025 season, spent with the Yankees’ Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre club, was his best in six years. Rojas put up a .287/.379/.599 line with 32 home runs and 105 RBIs while logging time at three infield positions (not shortstop) and the corner outfield spots.

Does any of this add up to a likely spot on the major league roster? No, it doesn’t. In terms of long term solutions, the club would probably want to have Mark Vientos or Brett Baty fill in at first if Polanco can’t cut it or is hurt. Similarly, if the aforementioned Clifford is having a strong year in Syracuse, he would be a candidate to log innings there.

All of that is to say that for Rojas to be an impact player on the roster a lot would have to go wrong, or he would have to have an offensive season the likes of which he’s never had before to force his way onto the roster. Save for that, Rojas is likely to be a quality bat at Triple-A, ready for a brief call up if the need arises.

Hayden Senger has glove, will travel

gettyimages-2225120537.jpg

Back in 2022, Hayden Senger was ranked the Mets 11th top prospect by Amazin’ Avenue. For context, here are the players who ranked behind him: Robert Dominguez (25), Levi David (24), Carlos Cortes (23), Travis Blankenhorn (22), Junior Santos (21), Brian Metoyer (20), Thomas Szapucki (19), Josh Walker (18), Jose Butto (17), Dominic Hamel (16), Adam Oller (15), Jake Mangum (14), Eric Orze (13), and Calvin Ziegler (12), and here are the players that were ranked in front of him: Jaylen Palmer (10), Alex Ramirez (9), Nick Plummer (8), Khalil Lee (7), J.T. Ginn (6), Matthew Allan (5), Mark Vientos (4), Ronny Mauricio (3), Brett Baty (2), and Francisco Alvarez (1). Of those 25 players, 17 were promoted to the big leagues and saw major league playing time; Heyden Senger was one of those players.

In March 2025, Alvarez broke his left hamate during a spring training game, sidelining him for approximately 6-8 weeks. Luis Torrens, who backed up Alvarez in 2024, and Senger, who was on the 40-man roster, were suddenly competing for full-time starting duties. Torrens hit an uninspiring .239/.286/.348, while Senger hit an equally unimpressive .208/.296/.375. As the late Casey Stengel once noted, “You have to have a catcher, otherwise you will have a lot of passed balls”, and so the 2025 Mets began the season with Senger and Torres splitting catcher duties.

An article written by Anthony DiComo highlighting the hardships minor league grinders face during the off-season made Senger an early fan favorite, but unfortunately that wellspring of support did not improve his bat. A hitter whose career batting average in Double- and Triple-A barely was barely over the Mendoza line, the backstop hit .179/.207/.214 and was optioned to Syracuse at the end of the month when Francisco Alvarez was reinstated from the injured list. He bounced up and down between Triple-A Syracuse and the Mets for the rest of the season and ended up hitting .181/.221/.194 in 72 at-bats over 33 games for the Mets and .218/.268/.339 in 165 at-bats over 46 games with the Syracuse Mets. His 19 wRC+ with the Mets was 10th worst in all of Major League Baseball in 2025 among players to get at least 50 plate appearances, behind Jacob Amaya (-33), DaShawn Keirsey Jr. (-18), MJ Melendez (-14), Will Robertson (-13), Vinny Capra (-11), Jacob Stallings (-7), Jorge Barrosa (2), Jace Jung (9), and Jeimer Candelario (10).

Senger was never known as an offensive-oriented player, however. His placement on prospect lists, or simply his continued employment by the organization has always been predicated on his defensive abilities. In the 195.1 innings he played behind the dish, he was worth +5 Defensive Runs Saved and a +5 Fielding Run Value. Thanks to his defensive acumen, Senger accrued a net neutral 0.0 fWAR. That makes him more valuable than five others on that 2022 Top 25 Mets Prospects list that made it to the majors, tied with two others, and less valuable than nine.

Now 29-years-old, Senger will likely begin the season in Triple-A and will be on standby with his glove ready when and if the need for another catcher on the active roster arises. His bat? Not so much.
