I know it's an old game, but I'm trying to make my writing skills better so...
Every game I decide to review now will be rated in a few categories:
Originality
Gameplay
Longevity
Story
and Overall, which I will post first so you don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom
Overall 8/10
Metroid Prime was a good game for its time back in 2002, and is still considered to be one of the best games of the series. Although it lags in story quality, it provides spectacular environments to explore. It provides a decent 5-8 hours of gameplay, plus several extra hours if you are trying to find all of the items and lore/ creature scans. And, it provided something new. If you just want to play a casual game ( plus bosses) then I'd recommend to you. If not, then you might want to buy a game from the Call of Duty series.
Originality 8/10
3D was nothing new at this point, but Metroid Prime did put some twists into the gaming world. It introduced strange creatures, creative weapons, and a somewhat new type of game.
The huge item that awed me in this game was the X- Ray visor, an object that allowed you see through some walls and see invisible platforms. Metroid Prime was new when it first came out, and may still hold surprises for those who haven't played the game yet.
Story 6/10
The only reason why I didn't rate it lower is because of the fact that the back story was provided sooner. Anyway, just to bring you up to speed, you play as a female bounty hunter named Samus Aran, whose parents were killed by perhaps the most powerful race in the universe known as the Space Pirates, who got their name from their notorious activities. The Metroid Prime series' events take place after Metroid, and before Metroid II, despite the fact that Metroid Prime came out in 2002 and Metroid II came out in 1991.
Now for the main story. Samus recieved a distress call from the currently remote planet, Tallon IV. Above the planet, Samus finds a Space Pirate frigate. On board, the Space Pirates were experimenting with Phazon, a radioactive substance which seemed to "live". Samus invades and destroys the frigate, but also finds her old arch rival, Ridley, who was "rebuilt" by the Space Pirates. ( for those who don't know, Ridley was responsible for the death of Samus's parents). Samus chases "Meta Ridley" in pursuit to Tallon IV, but is unable keep Ridley in her sights, forcing her to land and look for Ridley. I won't reveal any more of the story because this "paragraph" is getting too long.
But overall, it does deserve some praise.
Gameplay 9/10
There is no lag, and although they are few, the bosses are well thought out and require use of upgrades that you have acquired earlier. Most of the items are hidden cleverly, and I'm still trying to find the last 2 after having the game for a year. There are a 100 in all, and they expand your ammo and energy capacity. The difficulty does not pick up until you get towards the end of the game, but when it does, you better get ready for trouble. With every event in the game, the enemies in an area change, enabling new discoveries in old places. The only problem I have with the gameplay is the fact that most of the environments are dark and hard to see in, but then you have a map. Is it good? Not as good as it should be. Some platforms are missing from the map, but other than that, the gameplay is excellent.
Longevity 8/10
As I said earlier, I've had the game for a year and have not found the last two items. So, I guess that has to count for something. Like almost any other game, Metroid Prime keeps you running back and forth between worlds to solve mysteries involving the Chozo Artifacts, which are required to complete the game. So yeah ,this game lasts for a while.
So, that's the review! Anything I need to improve on? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
