Kyrie Irving Has Reportedly Stayed In Touch With Luka Doncic After Trade

They may no longer play together, but that doesn’t mean that Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic don’t still care about each other.

According to a new report from Ramona Shelburne, per Legion Hoops, Irving feels “protective” of Doncic and has stayed in touch with him since the big trade to the Los Angeles Lakers was announced.

The report states that Irving has been checking in on Doncic’s “emotional state” more than anything else and making sure he is okay since this life-changing event occurred.

When he came to the Dallas Mavericks, Irving immediately started playing a big brother role to Doncic.

Irving is 32 years old and has been in the league for 13 years now.

During that time, he has learned what it’s like to move around the NBA and be the center of a lot of media attention.

Therefore, he knows what Doncic is going through and just how startling a trade can be.

On top of that, Irving genuinely cares for Doncic and loved playing with him.

He has publicly stated that they grew very close, and Irving considers him a brother for life.

Just because Doncic is no longer playing for Dallas doesn’t mean Irving is going to stop caring for him.

They are now opponents, but it seems very likely that Irving and Doncic will remain close for years to come.

They competed on the court for the first time earlier this week, and the Lakers walked away with a win.

After the game, Irving and Doncic were all smiles and shared some heartfelt moments together.

No matter who they are playing for, these two aren’t letting their friendship fade.

Anthony Davis Has Honest Admission About Trade To Mavericks

Houston Rockets v Dallas Mavericks

We may never know all the details of what happened behind the scenes when the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were negotiating the trade featuring Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis.

According to most reports, very few people knew what was going down, but Davis doesn’t believe that.

Speaking about the trade, Davis revealed that he thinks more people were involved.

“Everybody’s saying nobody knew and all this other s—. I just don’t believe it,” Davis said, per Legion Hoops.

— Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) February 27, 2025

The reporting at the time said that everyone was caught off-guard by the trade.

Doncic didn’t see it coming, nor did Davis or any of their teammates.

In fact, no agents knew anything either, and they all received a call after the Lakers and Mavericks agreed to terms.

At least that is what was told, but Davis thinks that something else was happening.

No matter what occurred, the bottom line is that Davis’ life has been thrown upside down over the last month, and now he lives in a completely different city and plays for a totally different team.

Unfortunately, Davis has only played one game for his Mavericks because of an injury, but he put up big numbers, posting 26 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists.

The hope is that he can be back soon and will assist the Mavericks in pushing into the postseason.

There have been many conspiracy theories about this trade and who knew what, and it’s clear that Davis believes the whole truth isn’t being told.

But the Lakers and Mavericks will likely remain silent on the matter and won’t be giving more information, which will only create more rumors.

Nico Harrison Reportedly Proposed Blockbuster Trade To Timberwolves

Golden State Warriors v Dallas Mavericks - Game Four

It’s been nearly a month since the jaw-dropping, blockbuster NBA trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, but information about it is still leaking out, slowly but surely.

On Friday morning, Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote that the Dallas Mavericks initially talked with at least one other team about a Doncic trade.

General manager Nico Harrison reportedly spoke with the Minnesota Timberwolves regarding a swap that would have featured Doncic for Anthony Edwards.

Unsurprisingly, his idea was promptly shot down by the T-Wolves.

“League sources tell The Athletic that the Mavericks and Timberwolves informally discussed the prospect of swapping Dončić for 23-year-old, three-time All-Star Anthony Edwards in the weeks before the Lakers deal went down. More specifically, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison reached out to the Timberwolves and asked if there was any chance they’d be willing to trade Edwards. He was promptly told no. The Timberwolves, league sources say, were stunned that Dallas was contemplating parting ways with Dončić,” Amick wrote, per NBACentral.

This report makes it very clear that Harrison and his staff were looking to move Doncic and attempting to get the best deal possible for him.

This won’t make Dallas fans any happier, and many of them are still furious with Harrison for pulling off the trade and cutting ties with Doncic.

Harrison was allegedly unhappy with a potential upcoming max contract for Doncic and his problems with conditioning.

He was attempting to swap Doncic out for another A-List star instead of signing him to a new deal.

In the end, he got Anthony Davis, one of the best big men in the league.

That wasn’t a bad haul for the Mavericks, but this trade is still shocking to many people, and it will be for a long time.

The truth is that Harrison may never win back the fans that he lost with this move, and if more stories like this one come out, the anger at him will only grow.

Kyrie Irving Reveals His Thoughts On Facing Luka Doncic

Dallas Mavericks v Los Angeles Lakers

(Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images)

Both the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers knew that Tuesday night’s game would be emotional because it was the first time Luka Doncic was playing against his former team.

And while there were certainly mixed feelings among some people, Kyrie Irving said it was a good night of basketball.

Following his team’s loss on Tuesday, Irving stated that the game was “fun” and it was different but exciting to play against Doncic, similar to a practice scrimmage from seasons past.

“It was fun competing. Lot of high-level basketball players out there,” Irving said, via NBA on X.

All eyes were on Doncic when the night began because people wanted to see how he would perform against the Mavericks.

Would he take out the anger and aggression about the recent trade, or would he be outplayed by his one-time teammates?

In the end, Doncic did quite well and earned his first triple-double with the Lakers, putting up 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists on the way to a 107-99 victory.

Irving had an incredible game for the Mavericks with 35 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Between him and Klay Thompson’s three-pointers, the game was much closer than some people expected.

Irving still holds a special place in his heart for Doncic, and he is glad they can remain close even though they are competing against one another.

Both men are clearly moving on and trying to achieve all they can for their respective teams.

Of course, Doncic wasn’t Irving’s only former teammate on the court during Tuesday’s game, and he also had a few friendly and warm moments with LeBron James as well.

Stats Show How Kyrie Irving Has Been Dominating In Past 7 Games

The Dallas Mavericks dropped the trade of the year when ESPN’s Shams Charania had to stress to everyone that he wasn’t hacked when he announced weeks ago that the Mavs had traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie.

There’s no making sense of a deal of that magnitude, but everyone is trying to move on, including Mavericks superstar point guard Kyrie Irving, who has been on quite the tear since that deal went down.

StatMuse posted on X that over his last seven games, Irving is averaging 30.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game on 46/38/98 shooting splits while even leading the team with one block per game over that stretch.

— StatMuse (@statmuse) March 2, 2025

With Davis getting hurt in his Mavs debut, along with injuries to Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively, Dallas is razor-thin in the frontcourt, so Kyrie turning into a dominant rim protector is a helpful subplot.

Without Doncic, much more has been asked of Kyrie, and he has answered the call to keep his team’s hopes alive this season.

The Mavericks are clinging to a fringe playoff berth and currently sit in tenth place in the Western Conference with a 32-29 record as they try to fend off the Phoenix Suns and hang on to a play-in tournament spot.

The soon-to-be 33-year-old has seemed happy ever since the Mavericks acquired him a few years ago, and he has made it clear he can be as dominant as he ever has been.

We’ll see if this team can make an improbable run when the frontcourt gets healthy, but for now, Irving is doing everything he can to keep the team afloat.

Mavericks Announced Recent Increase In Ticket Prices

Milwaukee Bucks v Dallas Mavericks

It’s been a tough month for fans of the Dallas Mavericks.

Not only did they lose the future of their franchise in a shocking trade, but multiple players on the roster have been injured, and they are clinging to the tenth spot in the West.

On Monday, they were given more bad news when the team announced that season ticket prices would increase by eight percent next season, per WFAA.

According to ClutchPoints, the Adelson family claims this increase is necessary because of “ongoing investments in the team and fan engagement,” but that reason falls short for many.

Will people buy season tickets at a higher price when they’re not sure what the future of the team looks like?

The Dallas Mavericks announced an 8% season ticket increase for the 2025-26 NBA season, per @wfaa.

In one month, the Mavs traded the face of their franchise in Luka Doncic to the Lakers, had fans openly revolt, and are now increasing ticket prices.

Since the Adelson family… pic.twitter.com/YVDEXD8SNq

— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) March 4, 2025

This is a really bad time for the team to announce this sort of price hike.

No matter the reason, the Adelson family needed to consider how this would look to the people who are still reeling from the loss of Luka Doncic.

Since Doncic’s move, the Los Angeles Lakers have gone 7-2 and climbed to the second seed in the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks have lost multiple big names due to injuries and have had a 6-7 record.

There are so many questions and concerns about what’s ahead for the Mavericks.

Will they add more talent in the summer?

Will Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and the other injured stars be able to rebound and make an impact in the playoffs?

Dallas fans have always been loyal, but this price increase may test their loyalty, especially after the very disappointing month they have just been through.

Kendrick Perkins Says The Season Is Over For The Mavericks

Golden State Warriors v Dallas Mavericks

Is that a wrap on the Dallas Mavericks for the 2024-25 NBA season?

The year has already been filled with bad news for the Mavericks, but things got even worse on Monday night when their star player, Kyrie Irving, went down and left the game with an apparent knee injury.

This is just the latest blow to the squad.

Speaking on Tuesday’s “Get Up,” Kendrick Perkins said it was time for the team to make the tough choice to shut players down and give up on this year.

“This season is over for the Dallas Mavericks,” Perkins plainly said.
"This season is over for the Dallas Mavericks."

— Get Up (@GetUpESPN) March 4, 2025

Obviously, the Mavericks have been in a weird spot since losing Luka Doncic in his blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

That deal resulted in Anthony Davis in Dallas, but he was quickly hurt and hasn’t played since.

Other stars were already injured at that time, and now Irving could be out with his knee problems.

It’s important to remember that the team is already the 10th in the West, and they could fall down in the standings even more without Irving, Davis, and the rest.

Perhaps it is time for the Mavericks to give up on this year and start planning for next season.

A lot of big things could happen to them in the summer.

For example, there have been rumors that they may be in the mix for Kevin Durant if he leaves the Phoenix Suns, and other major acquisitions could happen.

The cards were already stacked against the Mavericks before Monday’s game, but Irving’s injury might force them to reassess what’s possible and what’s next.

Analyst Questions Why Anthony Davis Would Want To Stay in Dallas

Dallas Mavericks v Los Angeles Lakers

(Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images)

Things went from bad to worse for the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday when it was announced that Kyrie Irving would be out for the rest of the season because of an ACL injury.

That came after the shocking Luka Doncic trade, Anthony Davis’ injury, and multiple other players getting hurt.

Speaking of Davis, he might want to leave his new team soon, according to Justin Termine.

Appearing on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Termine said Davis may desire a quick exit from the Mavericks.

The team is in a tough spot right now and it may be years before they are better.

Plus, Davis never chose to be in Dallas and his past indicates he could demand a trade if he grows more unhappy.

“Why would [Anthony Davis] want to stay in Dallas?”@TermineRadio shares his thoughts with @JumpShot8 on what Kyrie Irving’s season-ending injury could mean for Davis pic.twitter.com/OTyYOPmaqZ

— SiriusXM NBA Radio (@SiriusXMNBA) March 5, 2025

It’s important to remember that Davis didn’t ask to play for the Mavericks.

He was perfectly happy playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and was just as shocked as everyone else when he was told to pack his bags.

If he was moving to a healthy and competitive team, he might be very excited to play for the Mavericks.

But Davis is hurt, Irving is out, numerous other players are on the bench because of injuries, and the future looks bleak right now.

Depending on how long his recovery takes, Irving might not be back next season and the Mavericks wouldn’t be able to make a lot of trade or moves to improve the roster.

Davis could be stuck on a team attempting to rebuild for a few years and that doesn’t sound very appealing.

He could play hardball and request a move.

That is literally the last thing the Mavericks need but their bad luck suggests it could happen.

Right now, nothing seems to be headed in the right direction for Dallas.

Analyst Believes Anthony Davis Should Never Play For Mavs Again

The Dallas Mavericks find themselves at a pivotal crossroads just weeks after executing one of the most talked-about trades in recent NBA history.

Anthony Davis, the centerpiece of the return in the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, may have already played his last game in a Mavericks uniform.

After making just a single appearance for Dallas, his situation has deteriorated alongside the team’s fortunes.

With Kyrie Irving now sidelined by an ACL tear, one ESPN insider suggested Davis might sit out the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

“I’m going to be honest. I don’t think that Anthony Davis should ever play for the Mavericks again. Shouldn’t play the rest of the season, and they should trade him this summer,” Tim Bontemps said, via NBACentral.

The Mavericks face questions about their immediate future and long-term direction, leaving fans and analysts speculating about what comes next.

Bontemps’ rationale stems from a broader assessment of Dallas’ competitive timeline.

The championship window previously described as spanning three to four years appears to be closing faster than anticipated.

Irving’s injury not only impacts this season but raises questions about his reliability moving forward, potentially undermining the team’s plans.

Davis, meanwhile, represents a valuable but diminishing asset.

Entering the final year of his contract and approaching his 32nd birthday this month, his trade value likely won’t increase from this point.

If the Mavericks’ current roster can’t realistically compete at the highest level, Bontemps argues that they would be better served by trading Davis while his market remains strong.

Chris Broussard Says 1 NBA Team Has Destroyed Their Fanbase

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - SEPTEMBER 13: Chris Broussard speaks onstage during day 2 of REVOLT Summit x AT&T Summit on September 13, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia.

(Photo by Paras Griffin/Getty Images for Revolt)

The Dallas Mavericks have gone through a lot over the past 12 months.

It started with the sale of the team, which was already a point of contention for the fanbase, and things have gone downhill ever since.

The Luka Doncic trade left many fans distraught and distrusting of what the organization was going to do next.

After all, he was the face of the franchise and one of the best players in the league, and the team decided to cut ties with him seemingly out of nowhere.

The saving grace in the trade was that the Mavericks got Anthony Davis back in return, but his potential season-ending injury added even more fuel to the fire.

Davis could get cleared by the end of the year, but many reports have indicated that even if he’s healthy, the Mavericks could shut him down and wait until next year for him to get back to normal.

This might make logical and financial sense for the Mavericks, but in a segment of “First Things First,” Chris Brossard mentioned that it could be devastating for their fans moving forward.

“They have destroyed their fanbase,” Broussard said.

Mavericks fans have been faithful throughout a lot of transitions and difficult periods, but this situation might be too much for them to come back from.

There has already been a lot of outcry on social media about how the team has handled the past several weeks, and that conversation could only get louder as the weeks go on.

Plus, with Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford also out indefinitely, this team is lacking the necessary star power to make a deep playoff push.

Insider Calls For NBA Team To Fire Its GM Today

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - NOVEMBER 29: A detailed view of the NBA in-season tournament basketball between the Chicago Bulls and the Boston Celtics at the United Center on November 29, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Dallas Mavericks are in bad shape and it might be time to throw in the towel and focus on the future.

With the news of Kyrie Irving’s injury, many Mavericks fans feel the season should be over and the front office should start to plan for 2025-26 and beyond.

How can they turn a corner and put this troubled year behind them?

According to Kevin O’Connor, it is time to fire general manager Nico Harrison.

O’Connor said everything plaguing the team right now is because of Harrison and his choice to trade Luka Doncic last month.

The Mavericks should fire Nico Harrison today. pic.twitter.com/oPBZC5zsG7

— Kevin O'Connor (@KevinOConnorNBA) March 4, 2025

After the trade, the Mavericks wanted a lot from their new big man, Anthony Davis.

But O’Connor said Davis rushed back from an injury because the Mavericks were attempting to make a point and help fans get over the Doncic trade.

That led to him being hurt again and now he could be out for the rest of the year.

As for Irving, he had even more responsibility put on his shoulders without Doncic and that may have been a factor in this current ACL injury.

So, once again, the Doncic trade created by Harrison bit the Mavs.

Fans are distraught, the team is in serious trouble, and it might be some time before anything looks right in Dallas.

If ownership wants to win the fans over again, they may need to relieve Harrison of his duties.

He did what he thought was best for the future of the team but it seems to have only hurt them more.

The Doncic era is over in Dallas, but should the Harrison era also be ending?

Kevin Durant Reveals His Honest Thoughts About Kyrie Irving’s Injury

Toronto Raptors v Brooklyn Nets

They may not play together now, but Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are still close friends.

Therefore, Durant was deeply disappointed and concerned when it was announced that Irving would miss the rest of the season because of an ACL injury.

Speaking to the press, per Brendan Mau, Durant spoke at length about Irving and how tough this injury is.

“I feel for my boy. I know how much case about the game and love the game,” Durant said, before adding how much Irving wants to perform for his fans and his team and teammates.

Durant was obviously emotionally affected by this injury and is hoping for the best for Irving.

— Brendan Mau (@brendan_mau) March 5, 2025

There is no denying that this is a bad injury for Irving.

For some players, it takes years before they perform like they used to, and some are never the same again.

Irving, who is now 32 years old, will have the best medical team looking after him and making his treatment plan.

He has every chance of recovering, but that doesn’t mean it won’t take a while.

Irving and Durant got very close during their time together with the Brooklyn Nets.

They were never able to truly capitalize on all their talent and reach the NBA Finals, partly because of injuries that bothered that team too.

There have been rumors of these two stars coming together again in the future and playing on the same squad, but nothing is certain, especially right now.

No matter what happens, it is obvious that Durant is rooting for his friend and former teammate and wishes him a speedy recovery.

The Dallas Mavericks’ fortunes have resembled a Hollywood disaster movie over the past month.

What began with shocking roster changes quickly spiraled into an avalanche of misfortune that left fans struggling to comprehend the scale of the collapse.

From unexpected trades to season-altering injuries, the Mavericks have endured a stretch that is testing even the most loyal supporters.

Amid the chaos, general manager Nico Harrison has found himself squarely in the crosshairs of fan criticism.

However, despite the mounting pressure, a recent report suggests his position might be more secure than many have speculated.

“There are no indications suggesting Harrison’s job is in jeopardy at this time, per Brett Siegel (of ClutchPoints),” Legion Hoops wrote on X.

The update comes as something of a surprise considering the tumultuous sequence of events that has unfolded.

The Mavericks’ catastrophic month began with the earth-shattering trade of superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, a move that sent shockwaves throughout the NBA.

The situation deteriorated further when Daniel Gafford sprained his MCL, Anthony Davis suffered an injury in his debut appearance, and Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in a devastating blow to the team’s already diminishing playoff hopes.

Harrison’s all-in approach to pursuing a championship, while likely ultimately unsuccessful this season, reflects the high-stakes nature of the NBA.

In this unforgiving profession, job security is virtually nonexistent. General managers can go from extension talks to unemployment in the span of a single disappointing season.

That’s precisely the dynamic playing out in Dallas, where many fans have been calling for Harrison’s dismissal ever since the Doncic trade.

Jason Kidd Has Honest Admission About Team After Loss On Friday

Indiana Pacers v Dallas Mavericks

Jason Kidd’s job as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks has been very difficult lately.

It’s never been easy but things have gotten increasingly tough with the loss of Luka Doncic and the injuries to Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and others.

Speaking to the press, Kidd talked about the new reality of the team and how the squad doesn’t have any clear No. 1 or No. 2 options on the roster.

“There’s no No. 1 option, it’s team…We don’t have a No. 1 or No. 2, we’re not built like that right now. We’re built on team…Klay’s one of the best, a future Hall of Famer, but we gotta run plays, we gotta set screens and create those opportunities for him…It’s gonna be a group effort every night, it’s gonna be someone different, and that can mean that we can be dangerous, cause then no one can load up on one person, and we gotta take advantage of that,” Kidd said, per Noah Weber.
Jason Kidd on the difficulty of planning who will be the No. 1 option given current circumstances:

“There’s no No. 1 option, it’s team…We don’t have a No. 1 or No. 2, we’re not built like that right now. We’re built on team…Klay’s one of the best, a future Hall of Famer, but… pic.twitter.com/A9ZyjqedH6

— Noah Weber (@noahweber00) March 8, 2025

Kidd’s statement came just moments after the Mavericks were taken down by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Like Kidd said, the game was a team effort and even though they didn’t win, multiple players tried their hardest to score a victory.

Brandon Williams scored the most off the bench, posting 31 points, five rebounds, and six assists.

Klay Thompson, who was referenced by Kidd, scored 15 points during the game and others like Naji Marshall and Kessler Edwards chipped in a lot.

The Mavericks are now in a challenging position but they are trying to make the most of it and allow all players to contribute and help.

This could be a benefit for them because opposing teams won’t know who to target or who could do the most damage.

Of course, fans would feel better about Kidd’s stance if the team was winning more.

Dallas Mavericks fans don’t have many reasons to be optimistic right now, but Anthony Davis wants them to know their team is in good hands.

Davis, who came to Dallas in the massive Luka Doncic trade, told fans that they have a bright future with him on the roster.

“I know who I am as a player. I’m top 75 of all time, and I just want to let the Dallas fans know like, ‘Hey, I got you, I’m here now.’ So, like, I know you lost a superstar in Luka, but you also gain a superstar like myself,” Davis said, per Legion Hoops.

This season, he is averaging 25.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.

Even with his recent injury, Mavericks fans should be happy about Davis being on the team, but that doesn’t take away the sting of losing Doncic.

Doncic was seen as someone who could lead the team for the rest of his career and he is still in his mid-20s.

People expected to see his jersey hang from the rafters someday and they really envisioned him winning a championship for Dallas.

Davis might be able to achieve those things too, but it seems less likely because he is older and has a history of injury problems.

But when Davis is healthy, there are few big men better than him and the Los Angeles Lakers know that very well.

Right now, things look bleak in Dallas and it might be a while before the team is in good shape again.

Davis is going to recover and then attempt to write an exciting new chapter of his career with the Mavericks, one that will make himself and the fans proud.

Ever since they inexplicably traded Luka Doncic just over a month ago, the Dallas Mavericks have had a string of bad fortune when it has come to injuries.

Anthony Davis, the big chip that came back in the Doncic trade, went down with an adductor injury in his first game with them, and they also lost key big man Daniel Gafford due to an MCL sprain that will keep him out until at least late March.

Then just days ago, Kyrie Irving, their main star and the engine of the team, tore his ACL and will not return this season as a result.

On Friday, even more bad news arrived for the Mavs when Shams Charania reported that forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper injured his wrist and is expected to miss the rest of this season.

“Another injury blow to Dallas: Mavericks forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper has a serious right wrist injury and is expected to require season-ending surgery, sources tell ESPN,” Charania posted.

Prosper was the No. 24 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, and he was traded shortly afterward to the Mavs along with big man Richaun Holmes.

In two seasons, the power forward has averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.0 minutes a game while shooting 39.6 percent from the field.

Just after they traded Doncic, the Mavs were considered by some to be a dark horse contender in the Western Conference due to Davis’ arrival and their big man depth, but they have now lost five of their last six games coming into Friday’s game versus the Memphis Grizzlies.

Brian Windhorst Believes Anthony Davis Could Be Shut Down For Season

Houston Rockets v Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks suffered devastating news on Tuesday when it was announced that Kyrie Irving would miss the rest of the season because of an ACL injury.

The loss of Irving hurts, and it could cause the Mavericks to shut down Anthony Davis for the rest of the year too.

Speaking on “UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio,” Brian Windhorst guessed that Davis wouldn’t play anymore in 2024-25.

He has been rehabbing from his injury, but now there won’t be any rush to get him back on the court because of the Irving situation.

How does the Kyrie injury impact Anthony Davis in the short-term and long-term in Dallas? @WindhorstESPN thinks the they're going to get to the place where AD isn't going to play. https://t.co/1xYPXtjHxd pic.twitter.com/IKgj0xzjEV

The Mavericks were planning to get Davis back, ideally before the playoffs began.

But the team is so harmed by the loss of Irving that that doesn’t seem like the smart move now.

They didn’t want to put Davis at risk of making his injury worse and now they can allow him to take all the time he needs.

In fact, if he really needs surgery, he would be able to get it now without fear of hurting his team.

That’s because his team is already so badly hurt, and their chances of making a playoff run are just about gone now.

They are the 10th team in the West and will likely fall a few more spots with Irving out.

Their expectations have never been lower, and that’s why they will probably decide to keep Davis on the bench.

This will allow him to completely heal, and the front office can start making plans for next season.

The Irving injury has repercussions that go far beyond him, and his whole team is affected.

Jason Kidd Gets Honest About Mavs’ Shortage Of Players

Miami Heat v Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are having a truly horrendous season and no one knows that better than head coach Jason Kidd.

Not only did they lose a generational talent in the Luka Doncic-Los Angeles Lakers trade, but the Mavericks have been hit with a nasty injury bug that has decimated the roster.

Kidd recently spoke about this, via Abby Jones.

“I’ve never seen this…Where you can’t take someone out to rest them because we had no one to put in,” Kidd said, per Legion Hoops.

The injury list is lengthy and might not get much shorter soon.

The Mavericks are currently without Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford, Jaden Hardy, Kai Jones, Dereck Lively II, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and PJ Washington.

Some of these players may be back soon and others, like Irving, are out for the rest of the year.

Davis is a big question mark: there are reports of him coming back before the regular season is done but some people are calling on the Mavericks to shut him down for the rest of the season due to the Irving news.

The situation in Dallas was already bad because of losing Doncic but things got even worse with injury after injury.

Kidd’s roster is depleted and he doesn’t have a lot of options.

The remaining players are trying as hard as they can, just like they did during Sunday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns.

But they came up short and have now lost five in a row.

As the tenth seed in the West, every win is important for the Mavericks but the number of injured players is incredibly worrisome.

Is there any chance of things turning around in 2024-25?

Stats Rundown: 3 numbers to know from the Mavericks 126-116 loss to the Spurs

NBA: Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs

Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images

The Mavericks fell flat down south, and fall back to a losing record.

The Dallas Mavericks split their games against the San Antonio Spurs this week after dropping the second game, 126-116, Wednesday night. The team falls back under .500 to a record of 33-34, floating just above the Phoenix Suns for the final play-in spot.

The shorthanded Mavericks had seven players in double figures, led by Dante Exum’s 17 points and Brandon Williams’ 19 off the bench, but it wasn’t enough after a lackluster start to the second half. A deficit they were never able to recover.

11: Points all scored by Exum to start the third

Exum hadn’t scored all first half, and the team was down just two heading into the third. And then Dante exploded, going on a mini run all his own which fought to keep the Mavericks in reach. Unfortunately that 11-0 run also meant no one else on the team scored until the 5:42 mark in the quarter, and at that point they went from down two to down nine.

28: Fox points through 3 quarters

Spurs starting guard De’Aaron Fox could not be stopped by the Mavericks, even when Fox couldn’t hit from outside. Going 2-of-7 from three didn’t matter. He had 28 points through three quarters, which put San Antonio up 10 going into the final frame.

It also didn’t matter that he scored just four points in the fourth, the Mavericks could never recover from a cold third. He finished with 32 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists.

3: Team offensive boards

It’s hard to win many games if you only grab three offensive boards as a team. The Mavericks tried making up for it by hitting 40-percent from three. But that wasn’t enough to overcome stale offense and little defense. A lack of size will always be an issue with this current roster. And it leaves small margins for error. They gave up 13 offensive boards, seven from San Antonio’s bench. That made a difference when the Spurs were just 31-percent from three. And with the Mavericks coughing up 18 turnovers, it’s an uphill battle.

Mavericks vs. Rockets: 3 things as Dallas trudges on against Houston

Dallas Mavericks v San Antonio Spurs

Photos by Michael Gonzales/NBAE via Getty Images

Have you ever even TRIED going gentle into that good night? What if it’s actually kind of nice?

Houston is a young team on the come-up. After just missing the play-in last year, and being a league bottom-feeder for the number of years preceding that, they are starting to look like they may just have a foundation upon which they can build a future of sustained success.

Dallas… well. Two ships passing in the night, innit?

Are you Ryan Reynolds? Because you better DRIVE

Dallas has won a single game in their last five attempts. It required scoring 133 points, beating San Antonio’s 129 by just four points. Interestingly, Dallas didn’t pile up all those points by shooting the ball particularly well, hitting under 32% from deep.

Instead, they went to the line for 30 free throws and hit 27 of them. 90%! Pretty good! It’s called fundamentals, people. This team can’t count on, like, being good to win games. They’re going to have to tilt the floor somewhere, and getting to the line is something they can actually effect and seem to excel at.

Scouting is key

Houston is a very young team. The kind of young team who would be happy to get over the hump and win an opening round of the playoffs, but don’t have true title aspirations this season. No, to do that, they would really need to add a difference maker to their team. Someone like, I don’t know, let’s say Anthony Davis, in the offseason.

Houston is one of the teams with the most tradable picks and youth in the league. If you’re a Dallas fan, use this game as an opportunity to get attached to some guys you’d love to see on this team if the front office has the wherewithal to pull their head out of their asses and do something productive this offseason.

Career night

Alperen Sengun is Houston’s emergent big man who’s scoring nearly 20 points and grabbing 10 boards a game. Dallas is a team physically incapable of putting someone bigger than 6’6” on the floor for any extended period of time.

Sengun career high in points is 45, set last season against San Antonio. His best number on the boards is 21. Both of those are numbers to watch as the Mavs take turns rotating one of their eight healthy guards and wings onto him throughout the game. Patrick Dumont was recently promoted to Chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands – no question a well-deserved bump for the man who knows a thing or two about generating future value. It goes without saying, this is a guy who has the capacity to be running two organizations simultaneously. It takes a special talent to balance those two jobs, but if anyone can do it, no question someone with Patrick Dumont’s demonstrated history of excellence is one of those great men.

How to watch

You can broadcast or stream the game on NBAtv, Channel 29, or MavsTV at 5:00
