NEW YORK -- Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas were elected to baseball's Hall of Fame on Wednesday while Craig Biggio fell two votes short and tainted stars of the steroid era remained far behind.

Maddux was picked on 555 of 571 ballots by senior members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. His 97.2 percentage was the eighth highest in the history of voting.

Glavine, Maddux's longtime teammate in the Atlanta rotation, appeared on 525 ballots and received 91.9 percent. Thomas, the first Hall of Famer who spent the majority of his career as a designated hitter, received 483 votes.

The trio will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 27 along with managers Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa, elected last month by the expansion-era committee. Maddux and Glavine played under Cox for most of their careers.

"It's exciting for me to go in with my teammate," Maddux said.

Writers had not elected three players in one vote since Nolan Ryan, George Brett and Robin Yount in 1999.

Biggio received 427 votes and 74.8 percent, matching Nellie Fox in 1985 and Pie Traynor in 1947 for the smallest margin to just miss. Biggio appeared on 388 ballots in his initial appearance last year and appears to be on track to gain election next year.

Kinda shocked that Thomas is a first ballot. I would have put Biggio or Piazza in before him.

You can also be mad at the people who didn't vote, the person who only submitted one vote, and the guy who gave his vote to Deadspin. The Baseball Hall of Fame voting system is a total joke. It needs to be changed.

Totally agree it is a complete joke. Not to mention the Eric Gagne got 2 votes lmao...............Are you serious?

They are just voting to stir up a controversy. It's like the NBA MVP voting, except much more corrupt. LeBron James should have been unanimous, but some sports writer wanted to have his fifteen minutes of fame, so he voted for Carmelo Anthony. Now we saw this with Greg Maddux. Greg Maddux probably should have been unanimous. Additionally, The voters really need to decide how they are making decisions with players from the steroid era. The voters need to sway to one side or the other on this issue, and be done. If you have half the voters okay with steroid users in the hall of fame and half of them who are not okay, nothing will ever get done, and hall of fame worthy players will be on the outside looking in.

Also, if they decide to not allow any steroid users into the hall of fame, then you can't dismiss the people who you think used steroids. One could assume that Mike Piazza used steroids, but is it proven? He should be in the hall of fame because you can't deny someone this prestigious honor because of an assumption. You could assume that Derek Jeter has been using some kind of performance enhancing drug for the past twenty years, but it doesn't make it true. Mike Piazza is one of the best catchers ever. He should definitely be in the hall of fame, and I honestly don't care if he used steroids because at this point, I honestly believe that just about everyone used it. Players will do whatever they can to get an edge, and if the MLB didn't have a problem with it back then, what difference does it make?

Next, I have trouble believing that teammates didn't use them together. When you think about teammates being super close and being around each other 24/7, I believe that entire teams were probably using them. Pete Rose admitted to using greenies back in the day. They are not the same thing, but if greenies were around during The Steroid Era, they would be frowned upon as another performance enhancing drug. My point is that there's no point trying to guess who did and who didn't, and why do we care anyways? I would rather blindly assume that everyone is innocent, instead of potentially victimizing players who did nothing wrong.

As a Braves fan, Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz were three of my heroes growing up. I absolutely worshipped that crew from the Braves in the 1990's. Pretty special times as a fan, and something I don't think that's going to be duplicated anytime soon. I also liked and respected Frank Thomas very much. Always seemed like such a good guy. And he was a heck of a baseball player too. Great hitter, had a lot of power, very consistent, hit for a good average. No surprise to see him in the Hall of Fame as well. He certainly deserved it.

I'm not really all that please with how the HOF voting system goes either. However, Maddux and Glavine were definite locks anyway. I'm not actually surprised as some posters about Frank Thomas being a first ballot selection. He was really popular and iconic back in the day and sometimes that's all it takes to get in, not really numbers. Anyone that had that many endorsements seems to get in easier, in my opinion. However, I guess that's how you get endorsements, by being "good".

This is the one HOF announcement that I actually agreed on all the inductees. The way Maddux could locate the ball was incredible. That man could do things with a baseball I've never seen done before even with all the amazing pitchers in the game today. Frank Thomas was a pain for any manager to game plan around, any time he stepped to the plate he had the talent to change the entire course of a game. Congrats to all three.
