The Houston Texans must trim their training camp roster by Tuesday, August 26th, at 4 p.m. EST, from 90 to 53 players. Follow along LIVE as we update the positional battles and roster cuts throughout today.
There are quite a few final positional battles still undecided heading into the week. Namely, the final cornerback spots are a three-way heat between Tremon Smith, D’Angelo Ross, and Arthur Maulet. Additionally, the fallout of the Joe Mixon news unraveled the entire running back room. Another interesting battle will be at linebacker…. will Jamal Hill make the roster or will the team trim down on a deep position to save someone else in a weaker room?
So much to be decided.
You can find our most recent Rosterology prediction from earlier this week here. Though if I can make some edits based on the past 72 hours… I predict they will cut WR Justin Watson, keep RB Dare Ogumbowale, and find room for Jamal Hill.

UPDATE – final cuts and injured reserve designations:
- RB Jawhar Jordan
- TE Harrison Bryant
- TE Irv Smith Jr. (IR)
- DE Denico Autry (IR)
- DE Jaylen Reed (IR)
- OG Zach Thomas
- DT Ndubuisi Haggai (Int)
- WR Cornell Powell
- Jaylen Reed (R) (IR – Designated to Return)
UPDATE: The official 53-man roster is finalized and should be announced shortly. Several bubble players still in play:
- WR Justin Watson
- RB Dare Ogumbowale
- OG Zach Thomas
- TE Luke Lachey (R)
- RB Jawhar Jordan
- DE Denico Autry
- DT Tommy Toiai
TRADE: According to Aaron Wilson, Houston has sent former seventh round pick OT Austin Deculus to the LA Chargers for a 2027 7th round pick. Deculus had improved greatly in the system and was participating as the backup left tackle. This clears up room for Cam Robinson.
MAJOR UPDATE: According to Tom Pelissero on X/Twitter, the NFL placed Jimmie Ward on the Commissioner Exempt List. This is only done for players facing legitimate legal issues and escalates Ward’s legal issues to the league’s supervision, not the Texans.
The National Football League today placed Jimmie Ward of the Houston Texans on the Commissioner Exempt List. Ward may not practice or attend games while on the list.

UPDATE: Four more players off the board. UDFAs Eli Cox and Junior Tafuna are cut and both are likely practice squad additions. Then, CB Damon Arnett and Russ Yeast also are released. The secondary appears to be almost with Tremon Smith, D’Angelo Ross, and rookie sixth round pick Jaylen Reed still standing.
UPDATE: Fullback/tight end Jakob Johnson, who was expected to make the roster, has been released per Aaron Wilson. Should be a prime candidate to be on practice squad and brought onto the team when Joe Mixon returns.
UPDATE: Texans cut another swath of defensive players: DEs Solomon Byrd and Casey Toohill and LBs Jackson Woodard (UDFA) and K.C. Ossai (UDFA) were cut.
UPDATE: In the biggest surprise thus far, the Texans cut nickel CB Myles Bryant. Bryant was slated to be the backup to Jalen Pitre. This opens up a roster spot in the secondary and indicates Houston’s intention to keep Jimmie Ward and M.J. Stewart on the roster.

UPDATE: Texans clear out multiple offensive players: WRs Quintez Cephus, Juwann Winfree (IR), Daniel Jackson (IR), plus OT Conor McDermott. Veteran WRs Justin Watson and Braxton Berrios are still safe (for now).
UPDATE: DE Casey Toohill has been cut. Toohill was an expected cut in a talented and deep position.
UPDATE: The cuts are rolling in. Houston releases former 7th rounder OT LaDarius Henderson and recently signed safety Jalen Mills. Henderson, who won a national championship at Michigan, couldn’t break through the depth chart. Mills played well but was added too late; this bodes well for fans of Russ Yeast.
UPDATE: Texans release backup QB Kedon Slovis. Slovis outplayed rookie QB Graham Mertz most of camp, but Mertz looked the better of the two during the final preseason game. Slovis should end up on the Texans’ Practice Squad.
UPDATE: The Texans have made three initial cuts at key positions to start the Tuesday cutdown day. OT Trent Brown, CB Arthur Maulet, and LB Nick Neimann were released so far. Trent Brown recently recovered from a patellar injury but the front office believes there’s enough depth to fill the role.
UPDATE: Safety Jimmie Ward will remain on the active-PUP (Physically Unable to Play) list. This precludes him from making the 53-man roster. News according to Aaron Wilson on X/Twitter.
MAJOR UPDATE: The Houston Texans have not activated Joe Mixon and will move him to the Reserve/NFI list. This rules him out of the first four weeks of the season. This is crushing news for the offense, but opens up a roster spot for another player.
Texans are not activating running back Joe Mixon by Tuesday’s 4 pm ET deadline, making him ineligible to play at least the first four games this season due to an ankle injury.

No roster cuts appear to be announced at this time (12:30 PM EST). DeMeco Ryans’ press conference did not communicate the health of Joe Mixon (foot) or C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
#Texans coach DeMeco Ryans on roster being in flux: 'It's not just a one day type of deal. It's been ongoing for last several weeks. As roster continues to take place over next day or so, still some final spots we're trying to identify. It's tough this year, probably…
