Discussion: What about the Detroit Lions are you thankful for?

gettyimages-2248187125.jpg

It’s been a rough week.

A week ago, the Detroit Lions required last-minute heroics by Jahmyr Gibbs and company to beat a 2-10 New York Giants team. That uninspiring performance led many to believe that the Lions are nowhere near where they need to be to make a playoff run this year. Those fears were essentially confirmed on Thursday when the Lions couldn’t catch the Green Bay Packers in a game they trailed for nearly the entire afternoon. Throw in an emotional-tolling Frank Ragnow unretirement that lasted about 72 hours and devastating wins from the Bears and Cowboys, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for just ignoring sports this weekend.

But in the spirit of the Thanksgiving weekend, let’s take a moment to pull ourselves out of the dumps and try to find some silver lining in our Lions fandom.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

What about your Detroit Lions fandom are you thankful for?

My answer: While the playoffs are looking less and less likely this year, I am still thankful for the five remaining games on the schedule. Football is still thrilling to watch every week, and I will take frustrating—occasionally soul-sucking—football over no football at all. The excitement, the triumph—and, yes, the anguish—are all part of what makes football so special to me.

And this is still a very fun football team to watch at times. They’re chock-full of talent, and I consider it an honor to watch players like Gibbs, Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, and Brian Branch—among many others on a weekly basis. It’s easy to lose sight of the past in which the Lions had one or two blue-chip players. Now it feels like they’re at double digits.

Few franchises have that right now. And even though the Lions don’t seem to be playing to the sum of their parts right now, it’s still exciting to me to watch these individuals play each week.

What about your Lions fandom are you thankful for today? Scroll down to the comments and share your thoughts.

Detroit Lions Week 14 rooting guide: Best outcomes for playoff odds

gettyimages-2248204342.jpg

It’s been a miserable week for Detroit Lions playoff odds. Based on the results of the four games already played in Week 14, the Lions’ playoff odds plummeted from 73% to 32%, according to the New York Times simulator. These three outcomes were incredibly harmful to Detroit’s postseason chances:

  • Packers over Lions
  • Cowboys over Chiefs
  • Bears over Eagles

Sunday doesn’t provide much relief for Detroit, as the most important games are already over. However, there is some hope in Sunday’s results. If four results go the Lions’ way—admittedly, most would be upsets—Detroit’s playoff odds will increase to about 38%.

Let’s break it down:

49ers (8-4) at Browns (3-8) — 1 p.m. ET — CBS

Who to root for: Browns

The 49ers are one of the more likely teams the Lions could jump in the playoff standings, seeing as they’re only a game behind them. Though the current tiebreaker system (explained more here) really has the Lions more like two games behind San Francisco, if the 49ers slip up here, it would open up far more possibilities for Detroit jumping them.

Rams (9-2) at Panthers (6-6) — 1 p.m. ET — FOX

Who to root for: Panthers

With Detroit 3.5 games behind the Rams, it seems highly unlikely they’ll catch them. But if Detroit gets hot and the Rams slip up this week (and maybe next week at Arizona), the game between the Lions and Rams could swing the outlook in a hurry.

Cardinals (3-8) at Buccaneers (6-5) — 1 p.m. ET — FOX

Who to root for: Cardinals

This game matters the least of the group today, because an NFC South team is unlikely to be a factor in the Wild Card race, be it the Bucs or the Panthers. But just for good measure, give the Cardinals a win here.

Vikings (4-7) at Seahawks (8-3) — 4:05 p.m. ET — FOX

Who to root for: Vikings

While it seems wrong to root for the Vikings, Minnesota’s playoff odds (currently 1%) are so low, they are of little concern. Instead, focus on a Seahawks team currently in the first Wild Card spot. With games remaining against the Colts, Rams, and 49ers, they could have a late-season slide that Detroit could take advantage of.

If these results go in the Lions’ direction….

The NFC standings would look like this after Week 14

  1. Bears: 9-3
  2. Rams: 9-3
  3. Eagles: 8-4
  4. Panthers: 7-6

Wild Card race (top three advance)

  1. Packers: 8-3-1
  2. Seahawks: 8-4
  3. 49ers: 8-5
  4. Lions: 7-5
  5. Cowboys: 6-5-1
  6. Buccaneers: 6-6

In this case, the Lions would be just a half-game (but 1.5 games with the current tiebreaker) behind the 49ers, a game behind the Seahawks (with the same conference record), and a tad closer to the Rams, should they fall out of the NFC West lead.

Admittedly, this is all very unlikely, but desperate times call for desperate rooting guides.

Giants at Patriots, Week 13 MNF fan discussion

imagn-26898387.jpg

Week 13 comes to a close with a “Monday Night Football” matchup featuring the New York Giants (2-10) and New England Patriots (10-2). While the Detroit Lions don’t have either of these teams on their remaining 2025 schedule, they did just play the Giants, so how they perform against the 10-win Patriots could provide some perspective for Lions fans.

From a rooting perspective, there’s not much for Detroit fans to pull for, so let’s just hope for an interesting and competitive game.

Discussion: What will the Detroit Lions’ record be in their final 5 games?

gettyimages-2248165650.jpg

The Detroit Lions have just about arrived to do-or-die time. With a playoff spot now essentially two games away, the Lions can ill-afford struggles down the stretch. Five games remain on the schedule, and if the Lions win four of them, they are almost certainly going to make their third straight postseason. Unfortunately for the Lions, of their five remaining games, four are against teams that are in the depths of their own playoff races. Detroit’s final five games are:

  • vs. Cowboys (6-5-1)
  • at Rams (9-3)
  • vs. Steelers (6-6)
  • at Vikings (4-8)
  • at Bears (9-3)

So today’s Question of the Day is:

What will the Lions’ record be in their final five games?

Let’s start with the wins. The Steelers are not a good team. While they have a relatively strong defensive unit, they are still allowing 24.1 points per game, ranking 20th in the league. They really struggle on offense, ranking 22nd in DVOA and falling. They’ve lost five of their last seven games, and in three weeks they could be completely out of the playoff race.

I know the Lions lost to the Vikings earlier in the season, but things have only gotten worse for Minnesota since. They’ve lost four in a row since that game, and they’ve failed to score 20 points in each of those contests. They will be fully out of the playoff race by their Week 17 game against Detroit, and while the defense will likely give the Lions trouble, I have faith they’ll still be able to outscore that horrible Vikings offense.

That leaves the Cowboys, Rams, and Bears. Those are three teams with explosive offenses, which is likely going to give Detroit some trouble. I’m counting the Rams game as a loss, given they have a pretty strong defense to go with that dangerous offense. As for the Cowboys and Bears—the two most important games of the season—I honestly think the Lions are going to split them. I wish I could have faith in the Lions right now, but they just aren’t playing consistent enough football for me to believe they’ll win both of those games.

So, I have the Lions going 3-2 down the stretch here, which—in all likelihood—won’t be enough to make the playoffs.

Lions, Cowboys injury news: Amon-Ra St. Brown misses 2nd practice

gettyimages-2248137639.jpg

The Detroit Lions (7-5) and Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) were back on the practice field on Tuesday as they prepare for their Week 14 showdown on “Thursday Night Football.”

Let’s take a look at the latest injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note: Any changes from the last injury report will be bolded.

NOTE: Terrion Arnold (shoulder) has been removed from the injury report and placed on injured reserve. After requiring shoulder surgery, his season is over.

No practice

  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle)
  • WR Kalif Raymond (ankle) — Not expected to play in Week 14
  • TE Brock Wright (neck)
  • TE Shane Zylstra (knee) — Days remaining in injury evaluation clock: 19
  • LT Taylor Decker (shoulder/rest) — Downgraded from limited practice
  • RT Penei Sewell (shoulder) — Downgraded from limited practice
  • S Kerby Joseph (knee) — Downgraded from limited practice

Amon-Ra St. Brown has missed his second straight practice this week with an ankle injury he suffered in the first quarter of the Thanksgiving Day game. It certainly seems like he’s trending toward possibly just missing one game, but coach Dan Campbell wouldn’t yet declare him out for this week’s matchup with the Cowboys

“He’s better. He’s better, that’s the best way to say it. But I don’t see him practicing today. But he is better. So, I know this: if he can play, he’ll play. That’s the best way to say it.”

St. Brown said it’ll likely go down to a game-day decision this week.

“I’m not sure right now, if I’m being honest. It’s still up in the air,” St. Brown said. “I’ma try to be out there for the guys, for my teammates, but I couldn’t answer that question right now.” fi

The outlook is worse for Raymond, who is on track to miss his second straight game with an ankle injury. Campbell, more or less, declared him out for this week, meaning the Lions will likely have to rely on Jameson Williams, Tom Kennedy, and Isaac TeSlaa this week.

“Yeah, I mean, he’s getting better, but I don’t see him this week,” Campbell said of Raymond.

Zylstra started his injury evaluation clock on Monday, returning from a Week 2 ankle injury. Now he is being listed with a knee injury, which is obviously concerning for his return.

Decker taking a day off in the middle of the week is not abnormal. While he’s technically listed with a shoulder injury, it’s probably just as accurate to call this a rest day, as he’s managed that injury all season long.

Sewell’s addition to the injury report is something to watch because it’s a new shoulder injury. It’s too early to know if this will impact his availability this week, but with no media access on Wednesday, we’ll just have to wait until the final injury report of the week.

It’s certainly discouraging that Joseph was downgraded to no practice this week after returning to practice for the first time in over a month. That said, Campbell was quick to point out that it wasn’t necessarily a setback.

“That’s his first time to go out there. He’s been rehabbing, he’s been doing things on the side, but that’s kind of his first being around it in the individual drills,” Campbell said of Joseph on Tuesday. “And so, sometimes you’re always going to hope for a little bit more than the first time you get back on the turf, but that doesn’t mean this is a setback. Now I know he could get frustrated. And I know it can be frustrating when you get hurt, especially when you’ve been trying to work your way back. And he’s been busting his tail to get back. But you just continue to treat it, try to eliminate the pain or limit most of the pain, to where he feels like he can produce.”

That said, it’s looking more and more doubtful that Joseph plays this week.

Limited practice

  • RB Sione Vaki (thumb)
  • C Graham Glasgow (knee)
  • G Kayode Awosika (foot) — New injury
  • S Brian Branch (toe/ankle)

Vaki, Glasgow, and Branch have put together two limited practices, which is promising to their availability this week.

The addition of Awosika could potentially be a problem if it occured during Tuesday’s practice. With the Lions already shorthanded at guard, the Lions may have to rely on rookie Miles Frazier if Awosiksacan’t go.

Before the Roar: Previewing Lions vs Cowboys

gettyimages-2177563468.jpg

We are back with a new episode of “Before the Roar” to get ready for a huge “Thursday Night Football” game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys. After a tough loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, the Lions find themselves in a must-win situation in Week 14 in order to keep their playoff aspirations afloat.

Joining me (Morgan) to break things down ahead of the game is my good friend and host of the Pride of Detroit PODcast, Meko Scott. We kick things off by discussing the Cowboys’ recent surge after a tough start to the season. Coming off of two impressive wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in Weeks 12 and 13, the Cowboys also are in dire need of a win so that they can keep pace in what is a tight NFC playoff race.

We jump into the injury reports from either team, and how we think things will shake out by gametime. After discussing the Tuesday injury reports, we dive into how we think the Lions’ offense can put points on the board against an improved Cowboys’ defense. Their in-season acquisition of defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has certainly been a major boost, however, there are still ways to move the ball against them. After a quiet day on the ground against Green Bay, can they get things rolling again on Thursday night?

From there we jump into how we think the Lions can slow down the Cowboys’ high-flying passing attack, and what defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard may need to do in order to put his guys in the best positions to make plays. And at the end we make our selections for X-factors as well as give our score predictions.

You can watch the full episode below, and listen whereever you get your podcasts.

If you haven’t already, please be sure to like the video and subscribe to the Pride of Detroit YouTube Channel. As always, we thank you for your continued support of all things POD.

Injury report: 4 Lions out, Amon-Ra St. Brown questionable vs. Cowboys

gettyimages-2249086675.jpg

The Detroit Lions (7-5) and Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) have declared their injury designations ahead of their NFC showdown on “Thursday Night Football.”

Let’s take a look at the latest injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note: Any changes from the last injury report will be bolded.

Ruled OUT

Raymond was not expected to play this week, and he’ll miss his second straight game. Coach Dan Campbell said Raymond’s making progress, but the outlook on when he’ll be available again is unclear.

Wright missed practice this week as the team explored multiple opinions on his trachea injury. He’ll miss at least one more week and maybe more.

Zylstra just started his injury evaluation clock this week and missed practice on one of those days; he’s not ready to return to game action just yet.

Joseph practiced for the first time in nearly two months this week; however, the Lions appear to be taking things very slowly with him, and he’ll miss another game. Practicing is progress, but patience is necessary with this situation.

Questionable

  • RB Sione Vaki (thumb)
  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle)
  • LT Taylor Decker (shoulder/rest) — Upgraded after a rest day on Tuesday
  • RT Penei Sewell (shoulder)Upgraded to limited on Wednesday
  • G Kayode Awosika (foot) — Downgraded to no practice Wednesday
  • C Graham Glasgow (knee)
  • S Brian Branch (toe/ankle)

Vaki has played through his thumb injury for multiple games now, and this week should be no different.

St. Brown told the media he expected his availability to be a game-time decision. It appears we’re going to have to wait until 90 minutes before kickoff to know his injury designations. With some extra time to rest before the Lions’ Week 15 game, don’t be surprised if the Lions give him a week off. He was listed as “no practice” for Wednesday.

Decker continues to play through his season-long lingering shoulder injury, and after taking a rest day on Tuesday, he looks like he’s back on track to play this week.

Sewell spent over a month on the injury report for various ailments. Then on Monday, he was removed from the injury report entirely, only to be re-added on Tuesday with a shoulder injury. A questionable designation gives him a chance to play—and he was listed as limited on Wednesday. So there should be some optimism there.

Awosika got in a clean practice on Monday, then was added to the injury report on Tuesday with a foot injury. Most mid-week injuries are tough to recover from, especially on a short week, but a questionable designation is promising. But he, too, was a non-participant in Wednesday’s practice—so Detroit could be looking for a new left guard this week.

Glasgow has stacked a week’s worth of practices, and it looks like he’ll have a real chance to return to his starting center role this week.

Branch has had a few nagging injuries lingering over the past few weeks, but he’s managed to play through them and is expected to do the same this week.

NFL Week 14 staff picks: Moneyline, spread, over/under predictions

gettyimages-2192699825.jpg

The race for the playoffs is starting to heat up, and it’s an awfully congested playoff picture right now. Week 14 is going to do its best to start and sort out the contenders from the pretenders.

As we have done in past seasons, our staff will be making weekly predictions for every game on the NFL schedule. Each of the Pride of Detroit staff will pick the moneyline (winner of the game, no spread), but some of the members will also pick against the spread and even the over/under lines—there’s an easy-to-use toggle button in the widget below to cycle through the settings and in the week’s ahead, check out our records when it comes to making picks. You can also check out all of the odds for this week’s games courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook.

At 8:15 p.m. ET over on Amazon Prime, a marquee matchup takes place when the Detroit Lions (7-5) take on the Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) from Ford Field for this week’s installment of “Thursday Night Football.”

Four teams are on bye this week—the New England Patriots, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers—so the NFL has 12 games scheduled for Sunday.

The local Detroit audience will have a couple of options to choose from in the 1 p.m. slot. On CBS, most Michigan residents will get an AFC North battle for supremacy when the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-6) travel to Maryland to face off with the Baltimore Ravens (6-6). Over on FOX in the same time slot, the Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) take on the Buffalo Bills (8-4) from upstate New York to round out your local coverage at 1 p.m. ET. In the late window, FOX has an uber-important NFC North matchup between the top two teams in the division: the Chicago Bears (9-3) and Green Bay Packers (8-3-1) from Lambeau Field at 4:25 p.m. ET.

“Sunday Night Football” closes out the day of football with a matchup between two AFC teams desperate to start their push for the playoffs right here, right now: the Houston Texans (7-5) play the Kansas City Chiefs (6-6) at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

On ABC/ESPN, the Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) welcome the Philadelphia Eagles (8-4) to southern California for “Monday Night Football” at 8:15 p.m. ET.

Here is who our staff is picking on the moneyline, spread, and over/under for all 14 games on the NFL Week 14 schedule:

Dan Campbell speaks interception into existence… again

gettyimages-2250042606.jpg

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is always an entertaining interview, but his post-halftime interviews have turned into something unique. For the second season in a row, Campbell has discussed how the defense needs to create a turnover to start the half, and within seconds, his defense delivers.

In Week 14 of the 2025 season, the Lions held a 20-9 lead over the Dallas Cowboys entering the half, with the Cowboys set to get the ball to start the second half. Following the kick-off, the broadcast played Campbell’s post-halftime interview in which he said this:

“We gotta get another takeaway, another stop.”

As the interview faded and the next play began, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw a quick slant to George Pickens, but Lions corner Amik Robertson jumped the route, knocked the ball into the air, and it dropped into the waiting arms of linebacker Derrick Barnes for the interception.

Coach manifested another one

— Detroit Lions (@Lions) December 5, 2025

Campbell’s previous manifestation happened back in 2024 when the Lions were trailing the Houston Texans 23-7 at the half. The coach’s post-halftime speech preached needing turnovers just moments before corner Carlton Davis intercepted a ball to open the half. The Lions would go on to complete that comeback and win the game, 26-23.

Here’s a trip down memory lane:

Lions, Cowboys snap counts: How Kelvin Sheppard adjusted front, improved pass rush

imagn-27742476.jpg

The Detroit Lions (8-5) got back to their winning ways, emphatically cooling off the Dallas Cowboys’ (6-6-1) hot streak with a 44-30 win in Week 14. The Lions were dealing with a handful of injuries and needed to make several roster adjustments to operate at their maximum. They also slightly adjusted their personnel usage to help unlock the pass rush on defense, which could be a sign of things to come.

Let’s take a look at how the Lions adjusted to all the moving parts on their roster by exploring how they utilized their personnel against the Cowboys in Week 14.

Quarterbacks:

  • Jared Goff: 62 snaps (100%)
  • Kyle Allen: 0 (0%)

Goff was poised in the pocket, took what was there, didn’t turn the ball over, and wrapped another game with over 300 yards passing and a passer rating over 110.0+.

Running backs:

  • Jahmyr Gibbs: 43 (69%)
  • David Montgomery: 19 (31%)
  • Jacob Saylors: 2 (3%) — 19 special teams snaps (56%)
  • Sione Vaki: 0 (0%) — 19 (56%)

The Lions kept their split the same as it’s been in recent weeks, leaning on their stud in Gibbs and allowing Montgomery to be rested and at his best when given an opportunity. While Gibbs will steal the headlines with his three-touchdown performance, this was Montgomery’s best game in quite some time, registering 60 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Saylors found the field in the Lions’ victory formation and on special teams. Vaki appeared to have aggravated his thumb covering a kick return and will be worth monitoring next week.

Wide receivers:

  • Amon-Ra St. Brown: 57 (92%)
  • Jameson Williams: 57 (92%)
  • Isaac TeSlaa: 48 (77%)
  • Tom Kennedy: 5 (8%) — 9 (26%)
  • Dominic Lovett: 2 (3%) — 1 (3%)
  • Malik Cunningham: 1 (2%)
  • Kalif Raymond: Inactive (injured)

St. Brown defied the odds and not only played in this game, but also produced in critical moments. Meanwhile, Williams continues his developmental ascent and put in another dominant game, converting several first downs and proving his worth in the moment. TeSlaa has seen his role increase as the Lions use more 11 personnel while they deal with injuries at tight end, and the rookie was rewarded for his hard work with another touchdown. Of his eight catches on the season, he’s found the paint on four of them, including one in each of the last two games.

Kennedy saw his role on offense reduced with St. Brown returning, but he was absolutely stellar on special teams. Kennedy simply looks like he is made for the NFL’s new special teams formations and returned three kicks for 120 yards (an average of 40 yards per return), as well as returning a punt for 21 yards.

Lovett saw the field in victory formation, while Cunningham—a former Louisville quarterback—took one direct snap out of a Wildcat formation.

Tight ends:

  • Anthony Firkser: 35 (56%) — 19 (56%)
  • Dan Skipper: 23 (37%) — 9 (26%)
  • Ross Dwelley: 18 (29%) — 17 (50%)
  • Hayden Rucci: Inactive

While Dwelley is the more senior tight end of the remaining reserves, Firkser is the better pass catcher and thus more balanced, which could be the reason why he saw a larger role this week. Skipper’s usage at tight end will likely lead to record numbers in Jumbo package (six offensive linemen) usage.

Fun fact: All three of Gibbs’ touchdowns happened when in the Jumbo formation:

Jahmyr Gibbs scored all three of his touchdowns against the Cowboys from jumbo personnel sets.

The Lions used jumbo on 36.8% of snaps, their highest rate in a game since 2021, and gained 139 yards from jumbo, the 4th-most by any team this season.#DALvsDET | #OnePride pic.twitter.com/uXIhcBOz7C

— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) December 5, 2025

Offensive line:

  • Tate Ratledge: 62 (100%) — 9 (26%)
  • Penei Sewell: 62 (100%) — 8 (24%)
  • Graham Glasgow: 62 (100%) — 1 (3%)
  • Taylor Decker: 62 (100%)
  • Trystan Colon: 36 (58%) — 9 (26%)
  • Miles Frazier: 26 (42%) — 9 (26%)
  • Michael Niese: 0 (0%) — 9 (26%)
  • Kayode Awosika: Inactive (injured)

With Awosika being downgraded to out just a few hours ahead of kickoff, the Lions opted for a rotation at left guard with veteran Colon starting and rookie Frazier entering the game after the first two series. Colon’s start was rough, especially in pass protection, but he managed to reset his base as the game went on and was very impressive as a run blocker. Frazier was more up and down in his first career NFL action, but the Lions wanted to get some experience, and he certainly got that against a formidable Dallas front.

Also, Sewell is the best run blocker in the game, and it’s not close, full stop.

Defensive end:

  • Aidan Hutchinson: 77 (94%)
  • Marcus Davenport: 39 (48%) — 6 (18%)
  • Al-Quadin Muhammad: 38 (46%) — 8 (24%)
  • Tyrus Wheat: 7 (9%) — 22 (65%)
  • Tyler Lacy: Inactive

Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard challenged his pass rushers to produce better and vowed to make changes to see it happen. After four games with a combined four sacks, the Lions’ pass rush answered the bell by recording 20 pressures and five sacks against the Cowboys.

An impressive 10 of those pressures belonged to Hutchinson, who saw his role unchanged, while Davenport saw his opportunities increase as he continues to acclimate. The real change came with Muhammad—who hadn’t broken 40% of defensive snaps in a month—who saw his snaps double from the previous week (from 19 to 38). Once allowed to pin his ears back and rush, Muhammad thrived, producing four pressures and three sacks, bringing his season totals to 42 pressures and nine sacks, per Next Gen Stats.

Defensive tackle:

  • Alim McNeill: 60 (73%) — 6 (18%)
  • DJ Reader: 28 (34%)
  • Tyleik Williams: 22 (27%)
  • Roy Lopez: 23 (28%) — 5 (21%)
  • Mekhi Wingo: Inactive

With an increase of opportunities for edge rushers (and linebackers, we’ll get there in a second), Sheppard reduced his interior defensive linemen’s roles. He scaled back the usage of the 4i—and the recent trend of using McNeill in that role—and instead put his defensive tackles in more traditional roles. As a result, McNeill, Reader, and Williams each saw their snaps reduced by over 20%, while Lopez saw his reduced by around eight percent.

Linebacker:

  • Jack Campbell: 82 (100%) — 8 (24%)
  • Alex Anzalone: 80 (98%)
  • Derrick Barnes: 58 (71%) — 2 (6%)
  • Trevor Nowaske: 14 (17%) — 25 (74%)
  • Malcolm Rodriguez: 2 (2%) — 25 (74%)
  • Grant Stuard: 0 (0%) — 25 (74%)

Campbell and Anzalone continue to see nearly every snap on defense, while Barnes has settled in at around 70% of defensive snaps over the past few weeks. We did see a significant uptick in Nowaske’s usage, mainly using him as an interior pass rusher and trying to use his athleticism to take advantage of the Cowboys’ guards. Rodriguez was also used situationally in short-yardage rushing situations when the Lions deploy two inside linebackers to stack the box.

Another schematic wrinkle implemented by Sheppard was him blitzing his linebackers (and defensive backs) on second down rather than the traditional third down. This appeared to catch Dallas a bit off guard and resulted in more challenging third down situations; Dallas converted just six of 15 third down attempts (40% success rate).

Cornerback:

  • D.J. Reed: 81 (99%)
  • Amik Robertson: 80 (98%)
  • Rock Ya-Sin: 47 (57%) — 15 (44%)
  • Khalil Dorsey: 0 (0%) — 17 (50%)
  • Nick Whiteside: 0 (0%) — 1 (3%)

Reed was finally fully reacclimated and back to seeing a full game’s worth of snaps. Robertson continued to rep on the outside in two cornerback sets and inside in subpackages, where Ya-Sin took over on the outside. With Terrion Arnold done for the season, this trio will be asked to play a similar split of reps moving forward, though it’s fair to wonder if Ya-Sin deserves more opportunities for his recent stellar play.

Safety:

  • Avonte Maddox: 80 (98%) — 2 (6%)
  • Brian Branch: 74 (90%) — 4 (12%) — Injured (achilles)
  • Daniels Thomas: 8 (10%) — 25 (74%)
  • Thomas Harper: 2 (2%) — Injured (concussion)
  • Kerby Joseph: Inactive (injured)

With Harper suffering a concussion on the second defensive play of the game, Maddox was called upon to step into Joseph’s role at free safety. The savvy veteran was terrific on short notice and should give Lions fans some confidence in his readiness moving forward.

Unfortunately, Maddox will likely be called upon sooner rather than later, as it is being reported that Branch tore his achillies, which will end his season. That is brutal news for the Lions’ defense, and something they’ll be forced to deal with while also waiting on the recovery status of Joseph and Harper. While a gut punch for certain, the Lions’ secondary can survive if either Joseph or Harper (or both) are able to return soon.

Specialists:

  • Jake Bates: 17 (50%)
  • Jack Fox: 11 (32%)
  • Hogan Hatten: 11 (32%)

Despite a blocked field goal attempt, the Lions’ special teams unit was otherwise very solid in all other phases. Kennedy was a strong returner, coverage units were in lanes and stood firm, while kick placements were accurate.

What was the most impressive aspect of the Lions’ win over the Cowboys?

gettyimages-2250064099.jpg

After a disappointing outing on Thanksgiving Day against the Green Bay Packers, the Detroit Lions were looking to bounce back during their Week 14 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on “Thursday Night Football.” And in what was essentially a must-win for the Lions in order to keep their playoff hopes alive, they answered the call in an emphatic way, rolling over the squad that was once known as “America’s Team” to the tune of 44-30 in front of a lively Ford Field crowd.

All three units made plenty of plays on the way to the Lions’ eighth victory of the season. The defense forced Dallas’ offense into three turnovers, including the game-sealing interception from Lions cornerback D.J. Reed. On special teams, longtime veteran Tom Kennedy made the most of his opportunities as a kick returner, as he routinely set the offense up with a short field. And on the offensive side of the ball, the Lions appeared to tap into their ways from the 2023 and 2024 season on their way to putting up 40+ points against the Cowboys for the second consecutive year.

There are still things to clean up for Detroit ahead of this final four-game stretch, but there was also plenty to like during a fairly convincing win over a surging opponent. What was most impressive to you about the Lions’ Week 14 win?

My answer: I am going with quarterback Jared Goff. On a national stage, the Lions’ veteran quarterback put on a clinic. He routinely found his playmakers in stride on several in-breakers that turned into chunk plays for the offense, and even when pressured, he was able to deliver the ball with accuracy in some really critical situations.

What about you? What do you think was the most impressive aspect of the Lions’ win over the Cowboys? Let us know in the comments below.

Lions News: Best reactions from Detroit’s victory over Cowboys

gettyimages-2249383886.jpg

The Detroit Lions secured a huge win against the red-hot Dallas Cowboys on their rocky road to the playoffs.

It was a resounding 44-30 victory in front of a rowdy Ford Field crowd dressed in their finest white. Many called this a “must-win” matchup, and the Lions did just that—with an exclamation point.

On Pride of Detroit, we’ve got a report card from Jeremy Reisman, eight winners and three losers from John Whitcar, and six takeaways from Brandon Knapp.

After you’re done with that, here’s this week’s edition of best reactions from Detroit’s win.

NFL Week 14 Sunday games discussion thread, Detroit Lions talk

187587265.jpg

There aren’t many better feelings on a football Sunday than the relaxed comfort that a huge Thursday night win provides. The Detroit Lions are 8-5 and just a game-and-a-half out of a playoff spot. By the end of the day, the Lions are essentially guaranteed to be no more than a single game out of the postseason. Lions fans can just relax knowing that no matter what happens on Sunday, Detroit’s playoff hopes are suddenly as alive as ever.

Of course, there are some favorable outcomes that will help the Lions, too. You can check those out in our Week 14 Detroit Lions rooting guide.

This post, however, is just to chat while the 1 p.m. ET games are going on. Here’s what that group of games looks like in Week 14:

1 p.m. ET games

  • Seahawks at Falcons — FOX
  • Bengals at Bills — FOX
  • Titans at Browns — FOX
  • Commanders at Vikings — FOX
  • Dolphins at Jets — CBS
  • Saints at Buccaneers — CBS
  • Colts at Jaguars — CBS
  • Steelers at Ravens — CBS

Admittedly, there’s really only one game that matters for the Lions, and that’s the first one listed. Root for the Falcons to upset the Seahawks.

But there are some intriguing AFC matchups in the early set. Colts vs. Jaguars and Steelers vs. Ravens will both decide who leaders their respective division. High-stakes football is always fun to watch, even if it doesn’t involve the Lions.

The real NFC fireworks come in the late window. We will have a separate thread for the Bears vs. Packers game at 4:25 p.m. ET. Around that time, make sure you head to our front page for that discussion post.

For now, chat about the 1 p.m. ET games below by scrolling to the comment section. If you don’t have a profile with us yet… WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Here are the perks (and it’s free!)

NFC playoff picture: Detroit Lions inch closer to postseason

gettyimages-2250054073.jpg

Let’s take a look at the NFC playoff picture after the Detroit Lions’ big win on Thursday night, and all of Sunday’s action in Week 14.

NFC North standings:

  1. Packers: 9-3-1
  2. Bears: 9-4
  3. Lions: 8-5
  4. Vikings: 5-8

The Lions are a game-and-a-half back of the Packers, and just a single game back of the Bears. Detroit’s odds of winning the division aren’t completely dead, but they’ll have to finish two games better than the Packers in the final four contests. Here are each team’s remaining games:

Lions:

  • at Rams
  • vs. Steelers
  • at Vikings
  • at Bears

Packers:

  • at Broncos
  • at Bears
  • vs. Ravens
  • at Vikings

Is it possible for the Lions to go 4-0 and the Packers to go 2-2? Certainly. Is it possible the Lions go 3-1 and the Packers go 1-3? It’s a bit less likely, but I wouldn’t put the odds at zero.

I’ll talk a little more about the Bears in the next section.

NFC playoff picture

Division leaders

  1. Rams: 10-3
  2. Packers: 9-3-1
  3. Eagles: 8-4*
  4. Buccaneers: 7-6

*Still to play on MNF (Eagles/Chargers)

Wild Card race (top three advance)

5. Seahawks: 10-3
6. 49ers: 9-4
7. Bears: 9-4
8. Lions: 8-5
9. Panthers: 7-6
10. Cowboys: 6-6-1

The Lions didn’t get much help from anyone else. The Seahawks and Rams continue to win, which will make it tough for the Lions to catch either—Detroit trails both by two with four games remaining. Of course, Detroit’s bout with the Rams this upcoming week will give them a chance to cut into that and get a statement win.

Instead, it looks like the Bears remain Detroit’s best shot to jump into a playoff spot. Chicago went all the way from the 1 seed to the 7 seed with the loss on Sunday evening, and now the Lions hold their own destiny again. By winning out, the Lions would guarantee a jump of Chicago, because that would involve a win over the Bears, bringing the two teams even with five losses. In this theoretical running of the table, the Lions would have a series sweep of the Bears, giving them the tiebreaker that would push them ahead. Detroit could very well go 3-1 and still catch Chicago, because their next three games are:

  • vs. Browns
  • vs. Packers
  • at 49ers

If the Bears lose one of those games, the Lions can spare a loss in their next three, and they’d still jump Chicago with a Week 18 win.

The other team to watch is the 49ers, who remain just a game ahead of Detroit. Here’s a look at San Francisco’s remaining schedule:

  • vs. Titans
  • at Colts
  • vs. Bears
  • vs. Seahawks

With two tough matchups there, San Francisco is catchable, but there is one complication. The 49ers have a fantastic conference record of 8-2. Detroit sits at only 5-4. That means the Lions need to win all three of their remaining conference games (Rams, Vikings, Bears) in order to tie the 49ers’ conference record, and that only happens if San Francisco loses both games to the Bears and Seahawks. Detroit is in good shape for the next tiebreaker (common games), but if the Lions lose to the Rams next week, it won’t matter; the 49ers will have clinched the tiebreaker over Detroit. So, in that scenario, the Lions will have to finish with a better record than the 49ers.

In other words, just keep rooting against the Bears.

What 14 different analysts think of Detroit Lions’ playoff odds

imagn-27743200.jpg

On Saturday, Pride of Detroit had their annual Movember marathon stream to support the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer center. In total for the month, we raised over $32,500 for the cause—which is a testament to how awesome Detroit Lions fans, and more specifically, the Pride of Detroit community is.

Throughout the day, we hosted a litany of Lions-related guests and peppered them with questions about Thursday’s win over the Cowboys, how Detroit adjusts to life without Brian Branch, and each writer’s favorite story they’ve written about the Lions this year.

But the main topic of conversation all day was the Detroit Lions’ playoff chances. I wanted to know what each analyst thought about Detroit’s odds to make the postseason after their win against the Cowboys. And, a bit to my surprise, despite the Lions’ probability hovering around 50 percent, each and every guest said they believe the Lions will, indeed, make the playoffs. Some were more resolved in their answer than others, but every guest who was asked the question ultimately did pick Detroit to land in the postseason.

Want to see each analyst’s argument for the Lions making the playoffs? We’ve got you covered. The entire stream is available in three parts over on YouTube, but I will embed them below with timestamps for each guest.

Eagles at Chargers, Week 14 MNF fan discussion

gettyimages-1351982121.jpg

Week 14 comes to a close with a “Monday Night Football” matchup featuring the Philadelphia Eagles (8-4) and the Los Angeles Chargers (8-4).

From an NFC playoff perspective, there’s not a ton for Detroit fans to pull for in this game. However, there is a tiny chance an Eagles loss could help the Lions, which means fans should be pulling for the Chargers to win. Here’s an excerpt from Jeremy Reisman’s rooting guide from Week 14:

Who to root for: Chargers

In all honesty, this game doesn’t mean much. After putting the Cowboys to sleep on Thursday, Philly is very likely (95% per NYT simulator) to win the NFC East. So an Eagles loss really only matters to Detroit if the Lions somehow win the NFC North, which remains a significant long-shot (7% per NYT simulator). If you want to get into the nitty gritty of playoff tiebreakers, an Eagles win would benefit Detroit’s strength of schedule, but that’s a sixth tiebreaker that isn’t likely to come into play.

How Detroit Lions’ playoff, NFC North odds changed in Week 14

gettyimages-2235431418.jpg

It’s not hyperbole to say the Detroit Lions saved their season with a Thursday night win over the Dallas Cowboys. Had they lost that game, their only likely path to the postseason would be to finish the year going 4-0 against a moderately tough schedule. Instead, the Lions have a little wiggle room. Detroit can likely finish the year 3-1 and still make the playoffs—provided that loss doesn’t come against the Chicago Bears.

But just how likely is it for Detroit to accomplish that and make their third-straight postseason? Let’s take a look at some playoff prediction models, and see how much the Lions’ probabilities changed from last week.

Note: FTN Fantasy and ESPN data is not yet updated with the “Monday Night Football” results, but percentages aren’t likely to change much based on the Eagles’ loss. Numbers will be updated once those probability models are up to date.

Lions’ odds to make the playoffs:

New York Times: 40% (+11% from last week)
FTN Fantasy (DVOA): 60.9% (+10.9%)
ESPN: 55% (+11%)
NextGenStats: 51% (+8%)

Detroit’s odds have shot up anywhere from 8 to 14 percent after their win and the Chicago Bears’ loss in Week 14. Most outlets have them near a 50/50 shot to make the playoffs, but the FTN Fantasy model—which uses DVOA as the primary factor in simulating the rest of the season—has Detroit’s most optimistic odds. That’s not all that surprising considering the Lions rank third in the NFL in DVOA.

It’s also not that surprising that of the teams most likely to fall out of a current playoff spot to make room for the Lions, the Chicago Bears top the list. Here are Chicago’s odds to make the playoffs per these same models:

Bears playoff odds:

New York Times:
70%
FTN Fantasy (DVOA): 54.5%
ESPN: 62%
NextGenStats: 65%

Three of the four models still have the Bears with better odds to get into the playoffs, but there’s a pretty wide variance here.

Odds to win NFC North

New York Times: 6% (+1%)
FTN Fantasy (DVOA): 9.9% (+1%)
ESPN: 9% (+1%)

Not much has changed for Detroit’s long-shot odds to win the division. Detroit is still a game-and-a-half behind the Green Bay Packers. And while Green Bay has three difficult remaining games on the schedule (at Broncos, at Bears, vs. Ravens), Detroit would likely need to win out to catch them. It’s not impossible, but it’s certainly not probable. If Green Bay wins three of their last four, Detroit cannot catch them.

Super Bowl odds

New York Times:

  • 1% (-3%) to win the Super Bowl

FTN Fantasy (DVOA):

  • 6.4% (+0.9%) to appear in the Super Bowl
  • 4.3% (+1.0%) to win the Super Bowl

ESPN:

  • 7% (+2%) to make the Super Bowl

Are Super Bowl odds very meaningful this time of year? Not really, but I still like looking at them.

Report: Detroit Lions position coach being poached by Iowa State

gettyimages-2229056684.jpg

The Detroit Lions’ 2025 coaching staff is already starting to get picked apart.

According to a report from Dave Birkett, Lions tight ends coach Tyler Roehl is being hired as the next offensive coordinator for Iowa State. The team has not yet announced the hire.

Roehl is just a year removed from being the Cyclones’ assistant head coach/running backs coach, but he jumped at the opportunity to join Dan Campbell’s staff in the NFL when the position opened following Steve Heiden’s departure to become the New York Jets’ offensive line coach.

“I was really happy at Iowa State. I was. Matt Campbell was unbelievable,” Roehl said during his opening Lions press conference. “Me, my family, we could have been really comfortable, but when you have the opportunity to coach the tight ends of the Detroit Lions, I mean, it’s something I sprinted towards. The vision here, the culture, the environment, what this all entails, it was just something that I was very grateful to get. And (I’m) excited for this opportunity.”

Now, Roehl will rejoin Iowa State, but without Matt Campbell at the helm, as he left to become Penn State’s new head coach. Former Washington State head coach Jimmy Rogers was named the new Iowa State coach last week.

Per the Detroit News’ Rich Silva, Roehl is expected to finish out the season with the Lions, including any playoff run.

It’s been a tumultuous season for the tight end room due to injury. Sam LaPorta was in the midst of one of his best years before a back injury that required surgery ended his season. Soon after, Brock Wright was sent to injured reserve with a neck injury.

As for who could replace Roehl in the future, Seth Ryan is the most logical candidate. He is currently the Lions’ assistant tight ends coach and has been with the organization since 2021.
