News Lightning Team Notes

Lightning build chances, but no goals as they are shutout in Game 2, 2-0

A much more physical Tampa Bay Lightning played vastly better than they did in Game 1, but couldn’t find the back of the net as they dropped Game 2 to the Florida Panthers, 2-0. Nate Schmidt scored his third goal of the series while Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves to pick up the victory. Andrei Vasilevskiy rebounded with 21 saves, including a stellar stop on a breakaway seconds into the game.

Brandon Hagel suspended one game for hit on Aleksander Barkov

[Updated from original post published earlier today] The NHL has suspended Brandon Hagel one game for his hit on Aleksander Barkov in Game 2. Hagel will miss Game 3 on Saturday. The league’s ruling was that the onus was on Hagel to know that Barkov didn’t touch the puck before delivering an “extremely forceful body check to an unsuspecting opponent with sufficient force for supplemental…

Lightning rally back to take Game 3, 5-1

Narratives can change quickly in a playoff series. The Tampa Bay Lightning took the first step in rewriting their story as they downed the Florida Panthers, 5-1, in Game 3. Playing without Brandon Hagel, who was serving a one-game suspension, the Bolts came back from an early 1-0 deficit to wheel off five straight goals, and, at the very least, extended the series another game.

Some thoughts on the Matthew Tkachuck hit

So, after what we hope was at least a thorough review, the NHL and it’s Department of Player Safety have determined that Matthew Tkachuk’s hit on Jake Guentzel at the end of Game 3 was not worthy of supplemental discipline. While they are unlikely to release a public statement as to why the interference didn’t warrant a fine or suspension, they have let their thoughts trickle out through the media.

Andrei Vasilevskiy named as a Vezina Trophy finalist

For the fifth time in his career, Andrei Vasilevskiy has been selected as one of the top three goaltenders in the regular season. The one-time winner (2018-19) makes his return as a finalist for the first time since the 2020-21 season when he finished second. Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg) and Darcy Kuemper (Los Angeles) are the other two finalists. Look, we know that Hellebuyck is going to win…

Brandon Hagel to miss Game 5, Aaron Ekblad suspended two games

Early in the day at the Tampa Bay Lightning off-day media session, head coach Jon Cooper was asked about the status of forward Brandon Hagel. He didn’t play coy with his answer. “Well, he’s not playing tomorrow, so there it is. And it’s, you know why.” The “know why” was an elbow/forearm to the head of Hagel from Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad. Later in the day…

Lightning end season with 6-3 loss to Florida Panthers

The Tampa Bay Lightning got the start they wanted. They finally found success on the power play. They received secondary scoring. All key elements that they hoped for in the series, but in the end it wasn’t enough. They came back from a one-goal deficit twice, but Sam Bennett’s goal late in the second period gave the Florida Panthers the lead they wouldn’t surrender as they won 6-3 to eliminate…

Nikita Kucherov Named Hart Finalist for Second Consecutive Season

No one, least of all Nikita Kucherov, is thinking about individual awards after the Tampa Bay Lightning were denied a chance at the ultimate team award at the hands of the Florida Panthers. Still, it’s nice to see that Kucherov has finished, at worst, among the top three players in the NHL this season as decided by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. It is the second year in a row that he…

The 2025 NHL Post-season Post Postmortem

This isn’t going to be a long, in-depth post. Quite frankly, it doesn’t need to be. In the end, the undoing of the 2024-25 Tampa Bay Lightning season was simply the fact that they weren’t good enough when they needed to be. Don’t confuse this with the notion that this wasn’t a good team. They were. Period. Full-stop. A bad team doesn’t rack up 100 points in an NHL season, even in Gary Bettman’s…

The injury report for the Tampa Bay Lightning

Injuries are never a valid excuse for a team to lose a playoff series. Chances are the team they are playing against is just as beat up as they are. That being said, hoo boy were the Tampa Bay Lightning playing through some pretty bad things. In his post-season address to the media, general manager Julien BriseBois detailed some of the ailments that the players were going through at the end…

Lightning lose lead late in 4-2 loss to Panthers

The Tampa Bay Lightning were three-minutes-and-forty-seven seconds from leaving South Florida with two wins and a tied series. Instead, the Florida Panthers scored twice in eleven seconds to take the lead, and added an empty-net goal to pick up a 4-2 win, and a dominating 3-1 lead in the series. Andrei Vasilevskiy kept the Lightning in the game with 14 saves on 15 shots through the first two…

Julien BriseBois affirms his support for coach Jon Cooper

May we be among those offering our condolences to the #FireCooper crowd as it appears, for now, that Jon Cooper’s job in Tampa is safe. During his exit day address to the media, general manager Julien BriseBois confirmed that he has no plans to divest himself of the long-term Lightning head coach. Barring any unforeseen changes, Coach Cooper will be behind the Bolts’ bench for his 14th season…

Lightning sign defenseman to one-year deal

There is no rest for the defeated. General manager Julien BriseBois isn’t going to let a pesky thing like the second round of the playoffs get in his way of adding to his roster for next season. On Monday, the Tampa Bay Lightning added to their defensive depth by signing Charle-Edouard D’Astous to a one-year, two-way contact. Financial terms were not announced, but PuckPedia is showing the…

Lightning re-sign Jonas Johansson

With the need for draft preparation at a bare minimum Tampa Bay Lightning general manager, Julien BriseBois, is getting a start on free agency. After grasping a defenseman out of the European leagues yesterday, Mr. BriseBois stayed a little closer to home as he re-signed goaltender Jonas Johansson to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $1.25 million. Johnansson had spent the…

Lightning Morning News: Catching up on some award nominations

Okay, we’re pulling ourselves out of the usual post-post-season depression and getting on with writing about this wonderful sport that we all, for some reason or another, love. We’ve hit the highlights of the Lightning news over the last few days (although we still have some thoughts on the exit interviews), but there were a couple of things we missed. Mostly, it was a couple of players…
