Guentzel’s hat trick rescues Lightning in 6-5 win over the Sabres

Jake Guentzel’s second period hat trick, and a game-winning goal by Oliver Bjorkstrand in his Tampa Bay Lightning debut bailed out a less-than-optimal defensive performance as the Bolts defeat the Buffalo Sabres, 6-5. Look, we could write 2,000 words describing all of the goals. We could probably add another 3,500 on the defensive breakdowns. We could do that. We’re not going to. Instead…

The 2025 NHL Trade Deadline Live Thread

Good morning, hockey fans. It’s Christmas in March as the 32 franchises in the NHL wheel and deal their way to Stanley Cup aspirations or build for the future. Some teams may even try to do both. We’re going to track the deals as they come down (verified deals only), but please bear with us as we are also doing this on the company dime (don’t tell the boss man). We summed up most of yesterday’s…

Lightning Morning News: The deals that went down the day before the deadline

The NHL offices were busy on Thursday approving deals as the clock continued to tick towards today’s 3:00 PM EST deadline. Were there any huge, super-blockbuster deals? No, not really, but some teams strengthened their line-ups, and others, well, they made trades. Let’s go with a quick wrap-up of yesterday’s action: New Jersey Devils acquire Brian Dumoulin [All About the Jersey] With…

Lightning prospect suspended for 10 games

Lost in all of the trade deadline drama was the news that Syracuse Crunch forward Max Groshev was suspended for 10 games by the league. The announcement cited an incident during the Crunch’s March 1st game against Rochester in which Groshev was found to have used “racially insensitive language directed at an opponent.” No further detail about the incident was released and Groshev had already…

Lightning offense goes missing in listless loss to Bruins, 4-0

If the Tampa Bay Lightning fall short in their goal of winning the Atlantic Division, today is one of the games that they can circle as a reason. They were outworked by a team whose entire roster was rearranged 24 hours earlier as they dropped a 4-0 decision to the Boston Bruins. Old friend Cole Koepke was responsible for half of the damage as he scored twice in his old barn.

Some final thoughts on….the 2025 NHL trade deadline

Whelp. We made it through yet another trade deadline. The roster are set (for the most part) and roughly three-quarters of the NHL seems to be in contention for the sixteen playoff spots available. If nothing else it should be an interesting race to the end. As usual the Tampa Bay Lightning were in the thick of it, and may have been partly responsible for setting the high prices we saw over the 24…

Nikita Kucherov leaves game early, status unknown [updated]

As if the loss to the Carolina Hurricanes wasn’t enough to make it a bad night, they also lost the services of their best player after two periods. Nikita Kucherov logged just 15:17 of ice time and wasn’t on the bench for the third period in the Bolts, 4-1 loss on Tuesday. Following the game, Coach Jon Cooper didn’t have an update following the game, and knowing their usual style, it’ll be in…

Lightning Morning News: Is there an 84-game schedule in the future?

Pierre LeBrun kicked off his latest column for The Athletic talking about next year’s schedule. It sounds like the league and the NHLPA are working to figure out the 2025-26 schedule which will include an All-Star Game and an Olympic break. Lightning Morning News: Checking in on unsigned prospect Ethan Hay

Back in January, the Kingston Frontenacs made a couple of huge deals with the Saginaw Spirit. Tampa Bay ends losing streak with convincing 6-2 win over the Bruins

The Tampa Bay Lightning have struggled in the second period of games this season. They’ve also struggled on the road. Oh yeah, they’ve also struggled against Atlantic Division opponents. On Saturday night they kicked all three of those situations to the curb as they absolutely dominated the Boston Bruins in the second period of their 6-2 victory. Lightning change lines at practice

Practice? We’re talking about practice? Yup. That’s what we’re talking about. Mainly because the Tampa Bay Lightning have had a couple of days off, and based on their performance over the past two games, needed some time together to get back to being the Lightning we saw over the last month or so. One way the Lightning are going about that is mixing up the lines a little.

A way too early look at Oliver Bjorkstrand’s time with the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning knew what they were getting when they targeted Yanni Gourde at the trade deadline. Sure, it was a slightly older version of the player that ran amuck during his first stint as a member of the team, but they knew he would be in front of the net, in the middle of scrums, and generally making life difficult for opposing teams. So far that has been the case. As for the other…
