Lakers News: Rui Hachimura ‘Fine’ Despite Locker Room Visit Vs. Nuggets

One of the unsung heroes of the Los Angeles Lakers’ big win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night was Rui Hachimura, who played great on both ends of the floor.

Not only did Hachimura have 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, hitting a number of big shots for his team, but he also defended Nikola Jokic as well as anyone has in recent years.

That’s why there was an immediate level of concern when early in the fourth quarter, he hurt himself battling Aaron Gordon in the post. Hachimura immediately started holding his side and back area, going back to the locker room to get it looked at with the Lakers calling a timeout.

Luckily though, it was nothing serious as Hachimura was back in the game a few minutes later. He explained what happened on that play though after the game.

“I actually don’t know what happened. I had a crazy pain. I didn’t get hit or anything, but I’m fine now. Stretched a little bit and they just warmed it up and I was fine, got back in the game. But I’m fine,” Hachimura said.

Hachimura is in the midst of a career year for the Lakers, so it’s great to see that he did not suffer an injury that will force him to miss time. The Lakers have finally gotten healthy in recent weeks and have been rolling as a result.

While JJ Redick has a number of quality options to turn to in his starting lineup, Hachimura has established himself as a regular in that group and a key piece for L.A. as they gear up for another postseason run.

Rui Hachimura discusses Lakers’ game plan on Nikola Jokic

JJ Redick stayed up for two nights putting together a game plan for the Lakers to defend Nikola Jokic, and it worked to perfection.

After the win, Rui Hachimura discussed what worked so well for him and the Lakers.

“It was just not giving him any easy touches,” Hachimura said. “He’s of course the main guy for them and if you distract him, it’s gonna be hard for them to operate their offense. So our defensive plan was to just trap him from half court and then once he got to half court, I gotta be on him literally the whole time. It was a great game plan and as a team I think we did a great job of executing our defensive plan. That’s why we got this dub.”

Lakers News: LeBron James Compares Connection With Luka Doncic To Receiver & Quarterback

Saturday was a big test for LeBron James, Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers as they made the trip to Denver take on the Nuggets, who won nine straight heading into this matchup.

Admittedly, L.A. struggles mightily when they are in the Mile High City as they had not won there since April 2022. But, the addition to Doncic has flipped the complexity due to how generational of a talent he is.

That was on display as the 25-year-old had his first signature performance as a Laker by putting up 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. James acknowledged it was a great game for his co-star, who has still been working himself into a rhythm after missing so much time.

“Yeah that is his fourth game back, but yeah that is the Luka we grew accustomed to watching over the last seven years,” James said after the Lakers’ 123-100 win. “That left side of the floor step back was pretty damn dangerous. Big-time game for him tonight.”

The Lakers’ stars are already forming a great connection, with Doncic finding James on outlet passes and their first lob in transition. The 40-year-old compared the five-time All-NBA guard to a quarterback and himself to a wide receiver.

“I’m a natural-born wide receiver and he’s a natural-born quarterback, so it fits perfectly,” he said. “I’ve been running the floor and running lanes pretty much my whole life and he’s been throwing great passes pretty much his whole life. So it’s not hard to get a rhythm when it comes to that. It’s just all about eye contact and him being the great quarterback like he is and me being the recipient of it.”

In his first three games, it was readily apparent that Doncic did not want to step on anyone’s toes offensively. But against Denver, he was aggressively looking for his shots and James commended him for playing with passion.

“Yeah, absolutely. He was super dialed in,” James said. “He was very locked in on what he wanted to do out here on the floor tonight. Once he started hitting those step-back 3s and got to yelling and barking, either at the fans or at us, or himself. He had every right, I don’t think he said too much to get the T. They’re kind of picking on us right now with the short leash on technicals, but he got hit in the head before the half. But besides that, he was just dialed in on what he wanted to do and how he wanted to execute his game plan individually.”

Although the Lakers still lack center depth, they proved they can do the necessary game planning to beat upper-echelon teams. Hopefully, this win builds confidence for L.A. as they embark on an upcoming challenging March schedule.

LeBron James shares strong reaction to upcoming stretch in Lakers’ schedule

Unfortunately, bringing Luka Doncic up to speed is not going to come against lesser competition as the regular season winds down. With several back-to-backs and playoff teams looming, LeBron James shared his reaction to this upcoming stretch for the Lakers.

Lakers News: Dorian Finney-Smith Expects Luka Doncic To Be ‘Excited’ To Play Mavericks

Just a few weeks after the trade that shocked the world, Luka Doncic will play against his former team as the Los Angeles Lakers get set to host the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

There have understandably been a lot of emotions for Doncic since the trade, but he finally seems to have moved past that as he is coming off his best game since joining the Lakers.

There’s no doubt that he wants to take it to the Mavericks though, and Dorian Finney-Smith discussed how excited he expects his teammate to be on Tuesday.

“I think he’s gonna be excited. But everybody in the locker room is excited, we got his back,” Finney-Smith said. “It’s gonna be a hard-fought game, we know Jason Kidd is gonna have them ready to come in and compete. We just gotta match their intensity.”

Finney-Smith knows Doncic better than anyone on the Lakers roster considering they were teammates in Dallas. And with that, he knows his teammate will be ready.

“I’m excited. I know he’s gonna be ready. But I try not to put too much pressure on him. At the end of the day, I know we just want to get the win. If we get the win, I know he’ll be alright.

At the end of the day though, Finney-Smith says the Lakers just need to focus on getting win against a tough opponent.

“Just go out there and play hard,” Finney-Smith said. “We want to get this win just like any other game, but we know it’s gonna be a lot of emotion in the air as far as everything that’s gonna happen. But just try to go out there and get the win.”

Doncic has always been fueled by pettiness throughout the course of his career, but Tuesday may take it to another level going against the team that traded him and then seemingly trashed him in every way possible on the way out.

Luka Doncic thinks Lakers can compete for championship

It’s a small sample but the Lakers have started to find their form in recent weeks. Luka Doncic is still trying to build his chemistry with his new team, but he believes the sky is the limit.

“Our goal is to win the championship, that’s our only goal,” Doncic said when asked how far the team can go.

“And I think we have the team for that. Obviously the chemistry with me and the guys is gonna take a little time but as you saw today, I think it’s getting better and better.”

Lakers News: JJ Redick Will Be Invested In Rest Of Max Christie’s Career

The Los Angeles Lakers trading for Luka Doncic was a no-brainer move, even if it came at the tough cost of losing Anthony Davis and Max Christie.

The Lakers and Dallas Mavericks are set to square off for the first time since the trade on Tuesday night, which will naturally lead to excitement for Doncic and his teammates.

On the Mavericks side though, Davis is currently out with an injury so will not be able to play on Tuesday. Christie, on the other hand, makes his return to L.A. to face his former team.

Christie has taken his game to another level since going to Dallas, making progress on the potential everyone in the Lakers organization knew he had.

Ahead of the matchup, Lakers head coach JJ Redick talked about Christie and how he is excited to see him continuing to grow even though he is on a new team.

“Max, since the day I took the job, was someone that I was very high on,” Redick said. “Really him and Jalen (Hood-Scifino) were the first two guys we got our hands on because we weren’t with the Summer League team all that much so Bronny and DK were kind of with that group. Max and Jalen were with us in Summer League and just feel very invested for the rest of my life in the rest of his career.

“He’s someone who throughout our time together was given more opportunities and became someone who starred in his role. He has a lot of freedom in Dallas that frankly he didn’t have here. At some point he would’ve had it here, but really happy to see him succeeding.”

In eight games with the Mavericks, Christie is averaging 15.3 points on 50% shooting, which is almost double what he averaged with the Lakers before the trade. Christie had really come on in his finally handful of games with L.A. after being moved into the starting lineup though, so another leap could be expected.

That’s not even to mention Christie’s defense, which has been great all year. It will be interesting to see how much he is matched up with Doncic on Tuesday in what should be a super competitive environment.

JJ Redick expects Luka Doncic to control Lakers’ offense

When the Lakers play the Mavericks, Luka Doncic should have the ball in his hands a majority of the night, which JJ Redick said will be the case moving forward.

“I think Luka needs to be the guy that controls the offense,” he said. “And Bron and AR, because we’re going to stagger everybody, they’re going to have their times to be on the ball. But all three of those guys are very intelligent basketball players, and we can create mismatches. We can get teams in the blender. And a lot of times, that’s how we’re able to generate, I thought, some great looks in the first half. Made some early and then went cold. We felt like we were getting good offense throughout the first half.”

Luka Doncic Faces Former Team For First Time With Lakers Hosting Mavericks

For the first time since the blockbuster trade that shook the basketball world on Feb. 1, Luka Doncic will face his former team as the Los Angeles Lakers host the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night. The game will be broadcast on TNT/TruTV/MAX as well as Spectrum SportsNet at 7 p.m. PT.

Doncic is coming off by far his best game in the purple and gold with 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals as the Lakers blew out the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night. And he and the rest of the team will be looking to build off that outstanding performance.

Doncic should be extra motivated to stick it to his former teammate and while, for some, that could cause them to try and do too much, head coach JJ Redick isn’t worried about that being the case for his star guard.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Redick said. “Every day that he’s been with us, it’s becoming a little more normal. I’ve been there, first time playing your old team, particularly with it being this close in a time duration, it’s gonna be weird. But he’ll be able to handle it.”

Not only is being a Laker becoming more normal for Doncic, but the chemistry with the rest of the team is growing and improving every day as well. LeBron James has spoken about the need for the Lakers to fit their games around Doncic, not vice versa, and that has led to some promising results. If the likes of Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves and Dorian Finney-Smith are able to figure that our sooner rather than later, the Lakers’ offense can become nearly unstoppable.

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Anthony Davis, who was acquired in the Doncic trade, won’t be suiting up as he recovers from an adductor strain. But one former Laker will be suiting up against his former team in guard Max Christie.

Since joining the Mavericks Christie has been outstanding averaging 15.3 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 43.6% from 3-point range in eight games with Dallas. The young guard insists he has no ill feelings towards the Lakers after the trade and while that may be true, it doesn’t mean he won’t be looking to have a big night and help Dallas to a win.

Recap: Luka Doncic Records Triple-Double To Lead Lakers Past Mavericks

The Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night in a highly-anticipated matchup with Luka Doncic taking on his former team for the first time.

Max Christie also made his return to L.A. while Anthony Davis was out due to an abdominal injury. It was Doncic’s night though as he clearly was motivated facing the Mavericks, leading the Lakers to a 107-99 victory.

The Lakers were clearly playing with a little extra juice early as they got off to a quick start. Doncic missed his first shot but then scored an easy layup to get the crowd going. He appeared to get fouled on the next possession but nothing was called, so he picked up a technical foul in frustration.

Kyrie Irving responded with 10 quick points for the Mavericks though to give them their first lead at 14-13. From there, Doncic drilled back-to-back triples and started yelling at the Dallas bench. The new Lakers star filled up the statsheet in his first quarter against his former team with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists, giving L.A. a 28-20 lead.

Austin Reaves and Dalton Knecht got going offensively to start the second as the Lakers extended their lead to double digits. When Doncic returned, he continued controlling the game as both a passer and scorer to continue growing the lead.

Christie heated up to end the half with back-to-back triples though, so the Lakers’ lead was cut to 59-51 going into the locker room.

Dallas’ push continued into the third quarter as Irving, Klay Thompson and Spencer Dinwiddie all connected from deep to get the deficit down to three.

The Lakers couldn’t get anything going offensively for pretty much the entire third quarter, scoring just 19 points. They were able to maintain a slim 78-77 lead going into the final quarter though.

After a pretty quiet first three quarters by his standards, LeBron James hit a fadeaway midrange jumper to begin the fourth. He then had two more buckets and an assist, although Thompson responded with back-to-back triples. He then hit another one and all of a sudden the game was tied at 88.

Doncic found James for a triple of his own to give the former a triple-double. LeBron continued his hot stretch from there with a dunk to put the Lakers up 96-91 with a few minutes to play.

It was all James from there as he closed the game out with ease, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter alone. Meanwhile, Doncic finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists, three steals and two blocks

Jeanie Buss: Lakers Embracing Luka Doncic & Family To Allow Smooth Transition To L.A.

The trade that brought Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was a blockbuster deal that completely changed the fortunes of the franchise. Rob Pelinka immediately brought owner Jeanie Buss into the fold at the start of these trade discussions and the Lakers’ braintrust was all on one accord in making this deal happen.

While the inner-circle of the Lakers knew the trade was in the works, Doncic himself had no clue anything was on the horizon. He has been open about how difficult this transition has been in joining the Lakers and Buss and the rest of the franchise are doing everything they can to make it easier on him.

Buss recently spoke about this in an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, saying that the Lakers have fully embraced Doncic and also revealed the initial conversation she had with the franchise’s newest superstar:

“We’ve embraced his family, his management. Everything we can do to make his transition smoother is what we’re doing. It takes time because he’s gotta decide, you know he doesn’t know L.A., he’s gotta figure out where he wants to live. There’s just a lot going on plus he’s gotta figure out how to fit in to this team. But JJ Redick played with him for, I think a month or so with the Mavericks, so they had a relationship. Dorian Finney-Smith, who had been his teammate with the Mavericks, we had just acquired a few weeks before. So we’re just trying to build that continuity, that community where he feels embraced and he can accomplish all the things that he wants to. And when I met him, the first thing I said to him, because I think a lot of times when players first come to the Lakers, there’s such a history that it’s kinda like, ‘How am I ever gonna stand out with all of these great Laker players. How am I gonna get my jersey up there.’ And the first thing I said to him was, ‘You’re gonna write your own chapter in the Lakers history books. We’re so excited to have you.’ And then he said, “I really wish that Kobe was there.’ That was like a really important relationship that Kobe really took him under his wing, was supportive of him. So I think he feels that, even without Kobe present, there’s that kind of feel with our organization and we do our best.”

Buss would also add that now, a few weeks later, she feels Doncic is beginning to get more comfortable with the Lakers:

“I think it still hadn’t set in with him. Because it’s very humbling to be traded, nobody wants to go through that. He had just bought a house and was settling in, so I think it surprised him. But I think now, it’s been three weeks so he’s kinda getting on board.”

Many only focus on the on-court things, but there is a lot of off-court happenings when someone gets traded. Especially in a situation like Doncic in which he had just bought a house in Dallas, and has a family that must be uprooted, it is a massive change not just for him, but his loved ones as well.

There is only so much Buss and the rest of the Lakers organization can do to help ease things for Doncic, but they are going to do everything they can to make him feel welcomed in his new home.

Mavericks continue to trash Luka Doncic following Lakers trade

There has been a lot of negative comments and leaks coming from within the Mavericks organization since the trade that sent him to the Lakers, and even weeks later more continues to come out.

A recent report noted that the concerns within the Mavericks organization about Doncic’s weight and overall health date back to his time with Real Madrid and some feel that it could ultimately destroy his career in the near future.

Lakers News: Luka Doncic Discusses Emotions Of Playing Against Mavericks For First Time

Luka Doncic has started to look more at home with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he was in for an emotional night when the team hosted his former team the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.

Doncic was beloved in Dallas and reciprocated those feelings, so when the deal was announced it came as a massive shock to the basketball world at large. Doncic was easily going to end up the second-greatest Mavericks player in history behind Dirk Nowitzki, though now finds himself trying to lead the Lakers to a title going forward.

To no one’s surprise, the game between Los Angeles and Dallas was intense as both teams didn’t give up much of an inch. While the Lakers prevailed 107-99, the Mavericks proved they’ll be just fine without Doncic.

After the game, Doncic admitted it was weird to face off against Dallas.

“It’s so weird, the moments,” he said. “I don’t know what I was doing. I’m just glad we got the win.”

Doncic had a moment in the first quarter where he made back-to-back 3-pointers and was yelling towards the Mavericks bench, letting out some emotion after they called a timeout.

“I honestly can’t remember,” Doncic said of what was going through his mind at that point. “It was just a lot of emotions. Not much sleep. I can’t even explain. It was a different game. Like I said, sometimes I don’t know what I was doing. I’m just glad it’s over, honestly.”

Doncic added that he thinks getting this game behind him will allow him to move on from being dealt.

“Yeah, definitely. This game is over. Just a little bit, like you said, definitely going to help in the long process,” Doncic said.

At the end of the day though, he reiterated it will take some time before he gets the full closure he needs.

“I mean, the closure is going to take a while, I think,” he said. “It’s not ideal. But I say I’m glad this game is over. It was a lot of emotions, but we go little by little. Every day is better.”

Doncic did more than just fine against his old team as he recorded his first triple-double as a Laker. The star guard compiled 19 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists to go along with three steals and two blocks.

While Doncic didn’t shoot very well from the field, he played hard on both ends of the floor and made plays when it mattered most. Despite all of the mixed emotions going up against the Mavericks, the 25-year-old found a way to play through them and lead the Lakers to a hard-earned win.

It’s likely that Doncic will require more time to completely process being traded, but getting this game over with is a huge step forward. The next hurdle will be how he handles returning to Dallas later in the regular season.

Mavericks reportedly awakened ‘beast’ inside Luka Doncic

The Mavericks went out of their way to drag Luka Doncic’s name through the mud after trading him and those comments have reportedly awakened a beast in the Lakers star.

Lakers News: Austin Reaves Keeping Tabs On Anthony Davis & Max Christie

There is always a ton of excitement when a team brings in a new player, especially a superstar talent the caliber of Luka Doncic, as the Los Angeles Lakers recently did. But it also means sending players away, those who have great friendships and relationships with their teammates, as was the case for Austin Reaves with Anthony Davis and Max Christie being dealt to the Dallas Mavericks.

Reaves had grown close to both Davis and Christie over the past few seasons and to see them gone was undoubtedly difficult. And just because they are no longer teammates doesn’t mean the Lakers guard isn’t still keeping up with them and rooting for their success.

Reaves recently revealed that he has kept tabs on both since the deal and is wishing for nothing but good things for both Davis and Christie in Dallas.

“Ever since the trade went down, I’ve kept tabs,” Reaves said. “I’ve watched a lot of their games really for [Max]. I want to see his growth and what he continues to do and he’s been playing really good basketball which isn’t surprising. I think everybody in the locker room knew the talent he was. And then seeing AD over there being AD, big goofball having a good time. I can’t wait to see him back on the court…Those two guys are really good friends of mine, and I want nothing but good things to happen to them. It was good to see him.”

Of course, Davis got hurt in his Mavericks debut and hasn’t played since, even though he did put up monster numbers in the minutes he played that night. Meanwhile, Christie has been excellent for the Mavericks, averaging 14.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists while knocking down 44.2% from 3-point range.

Hopefully Davis is able to return to the court soon and there is no doubt that Reaves and the rest of the Lakers will be rooting for him and Christie to have all of the success in the world, except of course, when they play each other.

Lakers’ LeBron James happy to see Anthony Davis showered with love in return to L.A.

In the matchup between the Lakers and Mavericks on Tuesday night, the team played a tribute video for both Anthony Davis and Max Christie. The one for Davis, in particular, stood out as he helped lead the Lakers to a championship in 2020 and LeBron James was happy to see the love and recognition he received on the night.

“I definitely saw it. I watched it from start to finish,” LeBron said of the Davis tribute video. “We know what AD was to this franchise and what he did for this franchise from the moment we got him to hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy to All-Star nods to winning the In-Season Tournament in the first inaugural In-Season Tournament and many, many dominant nights. Not only in this building but also on the road as well. Obviously our friendship goes without saying. He’s one of my best friends and it was great to see him get that recognition and get that moment.”

Lakers Highlights: LeBron James Leads Victory Over Timberwolves

The Los Angeles Lakers have been on a roll as they’ve won their past three games and in convincing fashion to boot. The Lakers are in the midst of a tough stretch of games and they kicked off the first night of a back-to-back set against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night.

The Timberwolves have been a bit underwhelming during the 2024-25 season and came into the matchup shorthanded as Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle were ruled out. With Minnesota’s starting frontcourt missing, it looked like Los Angeles would cruise to an easy victory. For a while it looked like that as they went up by as many as 23 points, but the Timberwolves battled back late in the game to make give themselves a chance to win.

Minnesota was able to cobble together a run despite Anthony Edwards being ejected in the third quarter after picking up a pair of technical fouls. While the Timberwolves gave it everything they had, the Lakers were able to hold on for a 111-102 victory.

Since the blockbuster deal for Luka Doncic, head coach JJ Redick has fully leaned into small-ball lineups in order to leverage the roster better. With Doncic handling playmaking duties, it’s pushed LeBron James more off the ball and he’s thrived in his new role.

James looks fresher on the floor not having to create shots all the time and he displayed what he can do with that extra energy by constantly punishing the Minnesota front line with his physicality and strength underneath the basket. The King forced his way to the rim as he usually does, but also had it going from beyond the arc.

More impressively, James was aggressive on the glass as he fought to end defensive possessions and give the team additional shots. Overall, James was too much to handle as he finished with 33 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block.

Doncic started the game off hot scoring, bullying his way to the rim and finishing through contact. However, he experienced a serious scoring drought from the field as he missed nine consecutive shots before getting a bucket to go.

It wasn’t the most efficient night from the superstar as he only shot 6-of-20 from the field but he did record 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. He made one 3-pointer and it was a circus shot late falling out of bounds to essentially put the game on ice.

Austin Reaves was also crucial from an offensive standpoint as he poured in 23 points, including converting 11-of-12 free throws. He also added six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Rui Hachimura Ruled Out For Lakers’ Game Against Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers announced they have ruled out Rui Hachimura for Friday night’s game against the L.A. Clippers due to a left knee strain that he suffered in Thursday night’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While the victory over the Timberwolves was a big one, it came at a cost as Hachimura got hurt and some other guys were banged up at the end of the night. With it being a quick turnaround for Friday’s game against the Clippers, the Lakers listed Luka Doncic (left calf injury management), Jaxson Hayes (left hip contusion) and LeBron James (left foot injury management) as questionable.

All of them are able to play though, which is great news for a Lakers team that is going for its fifth straight win. The Lakers and Clippers split the first two games of their season series at Intuit Dome in Inglewood and now will finish things up with two games at Crypto.com Arena on Friday and Sunday night, respectively.

In Hachimura’s absence, the expectation is for Dorian Finney-Smith to slip into the Lakers’ starting lineup and play extended minutes for JJ Redick. Other guys like Dalton Knecht, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jordan Goodwin and Gabe Vincent will also likely get more run off the bench and need to pick up the scoring load that Hachimura usually carries for L.A.

With it being the second night of a back-to-back, the Lakers will likely be playing with tired legs. The team has been playing at an extremely high level in recent weeks though and look to keep that going against a Clippers team hoping to gain ground in the Western Conference standings.

Doncic has struggled offensively since joining the team but has typically had great games against the Clippers, so hopefully he will break out in a big way on Friday in front of his home crowd. Regardless, it is just good to see him healthy and able to play in a back-to-back for the first time since returning from injury.

Lakers Injury Update: Rui Hachimura To Be Re-Evaluated In 1 Week Due To Patella Tendinopathy

The Los Angeles Lakers were the healthiest they had been all season, although that of course was short-lived as Rui Hachimura went down with a left knee strain in the team’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday. He was then ruled out for Friday night’s game against the L.A. Clippers given the short turnaround.

While Hachimura still has more tests to get done, it appears he has avoided serious injury as Lakers head coach JJ Redick expressed optimism he won’t miss too much time.

“Still getting more information. We’re optimistic this is not a serious injury,” Redick said before the game against the Clippers. “But we’re still not quite clear on when he will be available to play. But we’re optimistic.”

Redick further expanded on what Hachimura still needs to get done to determine the full extent of the injury.

“I believe he’s had some imaging done,” Redick added. “Again, we’re optimistic this is not a serious injury. We’re just trying to gather all information. He hasn’t been examined by Dr. Jones yet. Once that happens, we’ll have a full update.”

Redick then revealed after the game that Hachimura was diagnosed with patella tendinopathy and will be re-evaluated in one week, meaning he will miss a few games.

Hachimura has been playing some of his best basketball in recent weeks, and Redick knows that won’t be easy for the Lakers to replace while he is out.

“(We miss) 34 minutes of playing time of a guy who plays really well on both ends and has done a really good job of executing our schemes defensively. I think his ability to space, crash, punish smaller defenders, cut. We’re gonna miss him on both ends of the floor.”

JJ Redick praises Rui Hachimura for performance against Nuggets

One of Rui Hachimura’s best games of the season came last weekend against the Denver Nuggets as he was getting it done on both ends of the floor. He played quality defense on Nikola Jokic, earning praise from Lakers head coach JJ Redick after the win.

“[Jokic] leads the NBA in touches,” Redick said following L.A.’s 123-100 win. “He’s gonna touch the ball. We tried to limit his touches as much as possible. I thought Rui was outstanding. He was a warrior tonight. A warrior. And all the guys that had primary turns on [Jokic], LeBron at one point, Vando for sure setting the tone with his physicality, Doe as well. And anytime a small got switched on, we just stuck with what we were trying to do and had to live with some things. But that’s what we were willing to live with.”

Hachimura has been effectively guarding centers a lot lately, playing a big part in the Lakers having the best defense in the NBA since January.

Lakers Injury Report: Austin Reaves & Jordan Goodwin Doubtful Vs. Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers released their injury report for Sunday night’s game against the L.A. Clippers and Austin Reaves (right calf strain) and Jordan Goodwin (right ankle sprain) have been ruled out.

Additionally, LeBron James (left foot injury management) and Luka Doncic (left calf injury management) are questionable while Rui Hachimura (left patella tendinopathy) and Maxi Kleber (right foot surgery recovery) remain out.

It looks like the Lakers will be shorthanded against the Clippers for the second straight game, although that didn’t impact their ability to get a win on Friday night. Despite being in the second night of a back-to-back, Hachimura not playing, and Reaves going down with the calf injury after just nine minutes, the Lakers leaned on their defense to pick up their fifth straight victory.

The Lakers’ second unit was key in the victory and that will need to continue being the case while starters like Hachimura and Reaves are out.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick didn’t sound concerned that Reaves will miss too much time, but the team will be without Hachimura for at least a week after being diagnosed with patella tendinopathy.

While Reaves will likely sit out on Sunday, reports have confirmed that he avoided serious injury, per Shams Charania of ESPN:

Lakers guard Austin Reaves will be day-to-day after MRI on his right calf revealed no serious injury, sources tell ESPN. His status is uncertain for Sunday against the Clippers, but great development overall after Reaves exited early in Friday's win.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) March 2, 2025

In their absence, players like Dorian Finney-Smith, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt and Dalton Knecht should all get more playing time. The Lakers have a tough month of March with 16 games and four sets of back-to-backs, so it will be all hands on deck to not only get through it, but continue winning at a high pace to get the best seed possible going into the playoffs.

Goodwin also got hurt in the Lakers’ win over the Clippers, but Redick didn’t sound concerned that he will miss significant time either.

LeBron James: Lakers hanging their hats on defense

The Lakers have the best defense in the league for the last month and a half, and LeBron James knows that has been a huge key to their success and will be moving forward.

“That’s just us.” James said. “I mean, it is who we are at this point. We hang our hat on our defense because you can’t always understand or know what’s going to happen offensively as far as your shooting or whatever the case may be.

“Obviously, we didn’t shoot the ball well tonight or as well as we would like to, but defensively is where we hang our hat. It’s going to give us a chance to win every night.”

JJ Redick: Support From Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss This Season Has Been ‘Incredible’

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick looks like he was the correct choice to lead the storied franchise back to relevancy as he has the team playing its best basketball of the 2024-25 season.

Redick was brought in because of his basketball acumen and ability to communicate with players, but even the most optimistic person has to admit that he’s exceeded expectations. Redick has installed a modern offense and even has the Lakers playing like one of the stingiest defensive groups in the NBA.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss took a gamble when she green-lit Redick’s hiring, but she has to be pleased with the results so far. While Buss has taken some criticism for how the team has operated in years past, she has stayed the course and continued to trust her gut as the franchise’s stewardess.

Prior to Los Angeles’ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Redick discussed the support he’s gotten from Buss and what it’s meant to him.

“Incredible support, to be honest with you,” Redick said. “There have been a few scenarios where I’ve gone to her for things. Sometimes for console and sometimes for action, and she has responded well every time. I think just going through what we just went through with the Luka trade, that requires a lot because AD, in particular, was just such a vital piece of this franchise and helped the Lakers win a championship back in 2020.

“So she’s been awesome and the biggest thing is Rob, myself, Jeanie, in the interview process and in the very early days this past summer, it was all about creating alignment and cohesiveness between those three people and we’ve done that.”

Buss has been lauded for her natural affinity for people and it shows as she’s done a good job in helping Luka Doncic and his family transition seamlessly to Los Angeles.

Redick comes off as a confident and organized person, but even people like him will need support from time to time. Fortunately, it sounds like Buss has been there for him which bodes well for their relationship moving forward.

JJ Redick and LeBron James discuss what Dorian Finney-Smith has brought to Lakers

Luka Doncic isn’t the only former Dallas Mavericks player the Lakers added as they also swung a deal for Dorian Finney-Smith. While Finney-Smith may not be much of an offensive threat, both LeBron James and JJ Redick praised him for his knack for making winning plays and bringing toughness and physicality to the team.

Luka Doncic & LeBron James Playing, Austin Reaves & Jordan Goodwin Out In Lakers’ Rematch Vs. Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to face the L.A. Clippers once again on Sunday night after beating them at home on Friday.

While it was not a pretty win, the purple and gold are finding ways to come out on top while also trying to integrate an all-world talent in Luka Doncic. However, injuries are starting to pop up again with Austin Reaves exiting after nine minutes on Friday.

That’s in addition to Rui Hachimura being ruled out prior to the game and he is set to be re-evaluated in one week with a left calf injury. Then, Jordan Goodwin rolled his ankle, leaving the Lakers without a part of the bench mob that carried them to a gritty victory.

That being said, all three of those players are out in Sunday’s rematch with the Clippers. Thankfully, LeBron James and Doncic are suiting up, as they were listed as questionable due to injury management.

For the Clippers, their leading scorer Norman Powell is making his return in this one. Powell has not played since Feb. 13, so Lakers head coach JJ Redick is going to have to make sure he does not get easy looks.

However, James Harden and Kawhi Leonard are going to present challenges as well. Harden, who struggled mightily on Friday, will presumably shoot more efficiently this time around.

Players like Dorian Finney-Smith, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt and Trey Jemison are going to have to get after it against the Clippers’ stars. Former Laker Ivica Zubac also dominated with 27 points and 16 rebounds, so it will be intriguing to see how Redick adjusts his defensive schemes with Powell back.

Keeping Zubac off the glass, maintaining Harden as a playmaker, and forcing Leonard and Powell into taking and making tough shots are three keys to picking up another win. Easier said than done, but L.A.’s defense has been on point lately and this is another opportunity to shut down another capable offense.

Lakers News: JJ Redick Calls USC’s JuJu Watkins ‘One Of One’

Head coach JJ Redick has done a phenomenal job of getting the Los Angeles Lakers back on track in his first year on the job.

The Lakers are currently the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference following their win over the L.A. Clippers, a credit to Redick who coached a great game despite being without rotation staples like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.

Los Angeles has been enjoying a lot of good basketball at all levels the past few weeks, with UCLA and USC recently tipping off against each other for the Big Ten regular season title. USC beat UCLA 80-67 and JuJu Watkins starred in the matchup as he dropped 30 points to go along with five assists, three rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

Redick spent the Lakers’ off day watching Watkins play for the first time in person and gave her high praise after her performance.

“It was awesome. It’s such a cool experience to go to a high-level college basketball game,” Redick said. “I had actually never been in Pauley Pavilion before and had wanted to go to a game all season. Just the schedule hadn’t allowed it. We were in a hotel right near there for six weeks and drove by on a number of game days when I was coming here or coming back from here. There was one game recently that was like an off day and people were turning in to go to the game and I was like crap, I wish I would’ve looked at the schedule, I actually would’ve gone today.

“My youngest son has a classmate whose dad works for UCLA, so I saw him at school this past week and was like ‘I really wanna go to the game on Saturday. So he hooked us up, and just really impressed with both teams. JuJu Watkins is one of one. She’s incredible. First time seeing her play in person but obviously I’ve watched her before. She lived up to the hype.”

Watkins is dominating the women’s college game and is a sure-fire future first overall pick in the WNBA. She is a rare athlete who can score from all over the floor while still impacting the game defensively.

Watkins has a bright professional career ahead of her, but in the meantime the Lakers will be looking to get back to the Finals and bring home their own trophy.

JJ Redick says Jordan Goodwin will be part of rotation

JJ Redick has a knack for getting the most out of his team, which now includes Jordan Goodwin. The guard signed a two-way contract with the Lakers midway through the season but Redick has already confirmed he’ll be in the rotation going forward.

Lakers Injury Report Vs. Pelicans: Austin Reaves, Jordan Goodwin, Luka Doncic, LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers released their injury report for Tuesday night’s game against the New Orleans and Austin Reaves (right calf strain) and Luka Doncic (right knee contusion) are questionable while LeBron James (left foot injury management) is probable.

Additionally, Jordan Goodwin (right ankle sprain), Rui Hachimura (left patella tendinopathy) and Maxi Kleber (right foot surgery recovery) remain out.

It looks like the Lakers could be short-handed once again on Tuesday, although that hasn’t been an issue in recent weeks as they’ve won six straight games, including back-to-back against the L.A. Clippers at home.

While JJ Redick didn’t sound concerned about either Reaves or Goodwin when they got hurt in the first game against the Clippers, the Lakers will surely be cautious with both to ensure they are 100% before returning and their injuries don’t linger.

So if one or both are forced to miss another game or two, and Goodwin is for sure out in this one, then other Lakers players will need to continue stepping up. Gabe Vincent got the start for Reaves on Sunday and had a quality two-way game while Dalton Knecht had his best game off the bench in L.A.’s win.

The Lakers’ depth has been overlooked for much of the season, but Dorian Finney-Smith has been drawing attention to it as the wins keep stacking up. While James and Doncic are playing at a high level as the Lakers’ superstars, they cannot do it alone and their supporting cast deserves a ton of credit during this recent stretch.

If this team is gonna do any damage in the postseason then they will need to rely on that depth, which means getting back to full strength will be essential for Redick’s team.

The good news is that all of their current injuries are short-term ailments outside of Kleber, who could even return before the end of the regular season.

Luka Doncic ‘good’ after bumping knees in Lakers win over Clippers

Luka Doncic was forced back to the locker room in the first quarter against the Clippers after getting fouled hard by Kris Dunn. He revealed that they bumped knees and even though he was laboring a bit to finish out the game, Doncic is not concerned.

“It was on the fall, I think,” Doncic said, referring to when he was fouled has by Dunn late in the first quarter. “Just a little tight. But then I got kneed in the knee. Third straight game in the same spot, so kind of struggle on that right leg. But I’m good.”

Doncic is listed as questionable against the Pelicans against the Pelicans, so his status will be worth monitoring.

Charles Barkley Tells Story About Almost Being Traded To Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers always seem to land stars by any means, whether via trade or free agency. However, there are also intriguing “what if” scenarios throughout history, one of those being Charles Barkley.

Barkley, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, averaged 22.1 points and 11.7 rebounds on 54.1% from the field through 1,073 career games. He was a dominant force in his first eight seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, notably as a rebound champion in the 1986-1987 season.

In addition to being an 11-time All-NBA player, 11-time All-Star, making the All-Rookie team 1984-1985 and winning the MVP in the 1992-93 season, Barkley was one of the most impactful players of his era and likely would be looked at as even greater if he had won a championship. There’s some scenarios where that could’ve happened and one that involves the Lakers. Going back to his final seasons with Philadelphia, Barkley shared that he thought he got traded to the Lakers before the 76ers ultimately backed out of the deal, via NBA on TNT:

“There’s one trade, I got traded to the Lakers. True story, I get a call one morning from my agent. ‘Hey, the Sixers finally pulled the trigger. I got traded to the Lakers.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, thank you. About time, I can’t wait.’ So, I get my friends together. We go to Friday’s on City Line Avenue, we get blasted. We get blasted, Ernie. I say, ‘Let’s meet at 12. I’m out of hell, I’m out purgatory.’ About 3 o’clock, my agent calls me, ‘The Sixers pulled out the deal.’ We got a game that night, I don’t remember the game. I can’t remember, I could fake it and come up with some number. I run home, take a quick power nap and I don’t even know what happened in the game. I was so mad, number one. But, that’s the weirdest trade situation I’ve ever been involved in. It’s a good one.”

An interesting wrinkle would have been to see who L.A. gave up in this potential blockbuster deal to land Barkley. At the very least, he would have paired up alongside Magic Johnson, who always made his teammates around him better.

Unfortunately, the Hall of Fame forward finished his career without a ring and seeing how dominant the Lakers were in the late 80s and early 90s, Barkley could have certainly challenged for a championship should he have landed in L.A.

Charles Barkley criticizes Lakers’ handling of Bronny James

Since moving on to broadcasting, Charles Barkley has been vocal about the Lakers and what he dislikes about them. One gripe he has is how L.A. is handling Bronny James’ rookie season so far.

Lakers Video: LeBron James Becomes First NBA Player To Reach 50,000 Points Combining Regular & Postseason

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James went into Tuesday night’s game against the New Orleans needing one point to reach 50,000 for his career when combining the regular and postseason, and he got it in the first quarter on a 3-pointer.

James, of course, already broke the NBA’s scoring record, so he is just running up his total at this point. He has the most regular season points, postseason posts, and combined points in NBA history.

Considering LeBron has never been known as a pure scorer, it’s pretty impressive what he’s been able to accomplish in his career when it comes to putting the ball in the basket.

Another milestone for LeBron James, another ovation from the home crowd. pic.twitter.com/uRmdSlhV88

— Daniel Starkand (@DStarkand) March 5, 2025

He has added stuff to his game in the latter years of his career, most notably improving his jump shot, so he is still one of the best scorers in the league in his 22nd season.

James has reached a number of accomplishments and milestones throughout his time with the Lakers, most recently being named Western Conference Player of the Month, and that will continue as long as he decides to keep playing. While the end is undoubtedly on the horizon at some point, James could conceivably play at least two more seasons, which means reaching 60,000 career points is not out of the question.

JJ Redick believes LeBron James has been playing at All-NBA Defense level

What LeBron James is doing for the Lakers at the age of 40 is nothing short of amazing. In recent weeks, he’s been getting it done on both ends of the floor and Lakers head coach JJ Redick wanted to give him a shoutout for his defense, in particular.

“Again, he defies what’s normal… And again, this is not an exaggeration,” Redick said after the Lakers’ victory over the Dallas Mavericks in which they held their fourth straight opponent to 102 points or less. “If you watch our basketball team every night, and you’ve watched our team now for the last six weeks or so, LeBron is playing at an All-NBA defense level.

“He is, and now, people may have perceptions of what he is as a defender; I watch it every night. He doesn’t get scored on in isolation if teams do try to target him. He blows plays up. He’s always in the right position, shifting, recovering. I think there was this perception of him at this age, like conserving energy. No, there’s no conservation of energy on that end of the floor. He’s played elite defense now for a while.”

Jarred Vanderbilt Loves Having Other ‘Dawgs’ On Lakers With Him

The return of Jarred Vanderbilt in recent weeks has shown the Los Angeles Lakers what they were missing when he was out for nearly a year.

Vanderbilt isn’t gonna fill up the statsheet, but what he is gonna do is all the little things and dirty work, especially on the defensive end of the floor, that other players aren’t typically willing to do.

The thing about this Lakers team though is they have a number of guys that have the same mentality as Vanderbilt, which is why they have been able to find so much success with LeBron James and Luka Doncic in recent weeks.

“I love it. That’s the culture we’re trying to set,” Vanderbilt said after Tuesday night’s win over the New Orleans Pelicans. “Having multiple ‘dawgs,’ multiple gritty guys that’s gonna go out there and put their body on the line, fight, play hard, defend and do all the dirty work. Having guys like Trey by me, Doe and even Gabe from that second unit coming in and just being dawgs.”

Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent and Dorian Finney-Smith have led the way in that regard, leading to someone giving them the nickname Vincent Van Doe.

That nickname was brought to Vanderbilt’s attention and he loves it because it fits their mindsets perfectly.

“I just seen it, they just showed me… I like it,” he said. “It’s funny, Gabe was at my locker and just showed it to me. I thought it was pretty dope and had a little painting behind it too. But yeah, that’s our job. That’s what we come in and do. Play hard, get extra possessions, do all the dirty work.

“We’ve been setting the tone on that end for quite some time now. Amongst each other, before the game starts, obviously the starters start and the bench mob, we have a pep talk with each other and that’s our job to come in and set the tone and be the defensive guys and do the dirty work. So we’ve been doing a great job. Shoutout to them guys, man. Doe, Gabe, Trey, that whole second unit, even DK stepping up. It was a great team effort.”

The Lakers’ bench unit, notable Vanderbilt and Trey Jemison, have shown that they won’t back down from anyone, often getting into skirmishes to have their teammates’ backs. Vanderbilt spoke about creating that culture and how Jemison has fit in.

“Super important. I know Trey, being a young player, I told him that’s a big role for him, you know what I mean? Being our enforcer, being our big guy, bringing that energy every single night,” Vanderbilt said.

“That’s how you’re gonna make a statement in this league, or at least a start. And then obviously once he continues to develop, he can develop other stuff for his game. But that’s what we need him to do on this team and he’s been bring that every night. Being that enforcer, whether it’s setting hard screens, getting rebounds, being physical, or just not letting anybody try one of us and bully us in a sense. So just having that toughness, that edge and us being aggressive to start instead of waiting for them to attack us. So yeah, shoutout to Trey.”

Jarred Vanderbilt: Lakers haven’t hit our peaks yet

The Lakers are currently playing their best basketball having won seven straight games, although Jarred Vanderbilt still thinks they can be even better.

“I see that we’re not even at our peak yet and the fact that we’re still managing to figure it out each and every game coming together and just grinding out wins and we’re not even at our peak,” he said. “Obviously Luka and new additions, still trying to adapt to him and he’s still getting more comfortable and guys are playing new roles or different roles. But we’re just getting it done.

“Everybody is buying into the role that they’re assigned right now and we’re kind of just all on a string. For us to be putting out this type of product right now and we’re not even at our peak or fully connected I would say, that’s just a testament to guys just buying in. We all got one common goal and everybody is just locked in right now.”
